02 Jan 2024 | 55 - Dixie Landings | 00:55:45
Join AJ, Mike, and Chris as we delve into the world of Dixie Landings, a Disney resort steeped in the charm of the Antebellum South during the late 19th century. Daroff Design, Inc. of Philadelphia contributes to the resort's interior design, drawing inspiration from mid-1800s tidewater themes and the village's steamboat business. The Backstory: The backstories, sourced from the resort's original fictional newspaper, The Sassagoula Times, and famed Disney historian Jim Korkis, add rich layers to the Dixie Landings narrative. Founded by brothers Colonel J.C. Peace and Everette, the resort's history unfolds through family, community, and the charm of the Old South. The settlers' constructions, growth of Magnolia Bend, and the founding families' stories paint a vivid picture. Change to Port Orleans and Modern Updates: The episode covers the significant change to Port Orleans in 2001, where Dixie Landings merged with Port Orleans to become Port Orleans: Riverside. This merger saw the transformation of landmarks, like Colonel’s Cotton Mill becoming The Riverside Mill food court and the Cotton Co-op evolving into the River Roost Lounge. Renovations in 2004 and 2011, including the introduction of the Royal Guest Room theme in 2012, are discussed. Interesting Tidbits: Fascinating details are shared, such as the hand-carved wooden Alligator Bayou guest beds and the transplantation of a massive live oak tree on Ol’ Man Island. The Sassagoula River, themed after the Mississippi River, adds another layer of depth to the resort's design. Sega and Disney Detailing Sega's 16-bit Genesis/Mega Drive launch in 1989, the hosts discuss Sega's strategy of working with established names, resulting in games like Castle of Illusion. Emiko Yamamoto, serving as director, played a crucial role in this collaboration. The Game Castle of Illusion is described as a simple yet vibrant 2D platformer. The hosts appreciate the game's relative ease compared to contemporaries and highlight its colorful graphics and smooth animations. Mickey's ability to interact with the environment is a notable distinction, and many prefer this version over the Genesis one. World of Illusion The hosts touch on the sequel, World of Illusion, released in 1992, presenting a departure with puzzle-platformer elements. Its vibrant graphics and cooperative gameplay earn praise, and Emiko Yamamoto's continued involvement is noted. Other Illusion Titles The episode delves into other titles in the Illusion series, including Land of Illusion, a sequel for the Game Gear, and Legend of Illusion, released in 1995 for the Game Gear and Master System in Brazil. Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion The Illusion series resurfaces in 2012 with Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion for the 3DS, adopting Metroidvania elements and paying homage to the classics. Remake Castle of Illusion gets a remake in 2013, expanding on the original with 2.5D gameplay and more exploration. The hosts appreciate the enhancements while lamenting that it marked the closure of Sega Studios Australia. Illusion Today The episode touches on the game's inclusion in the Genesis Mini library in 2019 and references Disney Illusion Island, a multiplayer Metroidvania inspired by Castle of Illusion. 01 Mar 2024 | 57 - McDonald’s | 01:13:55
Join AJ, Mike, and Chris as they delve into the intriguing relationship between Disney and McDonald's in the 90s.
Early History
The connection between Disney and McDonald's traces back to WW1 in 1918 when Walt Disney and Ray Kroc, both lying about their ages, joined the American Ambulance Corps.
Ray Kroc, later the innovator behind McDonald's franchises, and Walt Disney crossed paths during their training.
First Partnerships
In the late 80s, the first Disney-McDonald's promotion was launched for the 50th anniversary of Snow White.
Subsequent collaborations included Happy Meal toys like The Disney Favorites Activity Books and Cinderella Plush ornaments.
Splash Mountain and Setbacks
A promotional agreement for Splash Mountain soured due to ride delays, leading to a rift between McDonald's and Disney.
The underperformance of Dick Tracy further strained their relationship, with Burger King eventually overtaking McDonald's in Disney promotions.
The 10 Year Deal
McDonald's launched the Disney Video Masterpiece Collection Trivia Challenge in April 1996, initiating a 10-year partnership as the exclusive sponsor for Disney films.
This deal saw tie-ins with movies like 101 Dalmatians, Hercules, Animal Kingdom, and Mulan.
End of the 10 Year Deal
The partnership ended in 2006, with Disney choosing not to renew due to McDonald's negative public image and concerns about associations with obesity.
Disney allowed McDonald's to package toys in Happy Meals again in 2018, marking a renewed partnership.
McDonald's in the Parks
McDonald's had a significant presence in Disney parks, with locations offering themed dining experiences and tie-ins with park attractions.
The Future is Back Proposal
A discovery of original letter correspondence between Disney and McDonald’s led to the revelation of a proposal for a replica McDonald's in Disneyland as part of a "Future is Back" ad campaign.
Share your memories of McDonald's and Disney collaborations!

01 Dec 2023 | 54 - Candlelight Processional | 01:02:48
Join AJ, Mike, and Chris for a beloved Disney holiday tradition that goes back much further than you think. Every year since 1994, the Candlelight Processional is performed at Epcot. This moving show features choirs, musicians, and a celebrity narrator. But did you know this show can trace its origins back to Walt Disney and Disneyland's first year? Early Disneyland Days In 1955, Disney initiated the Disney at Christmas Festival, precursor to Candlelight Processional. Dr. Charles C. Hirt of USC suggested expanding the event, leading to the first true Candlelight Processional in 1958. Walt Disney World Transition Candlelight Processional moved to WDW in 1980. Initially in front of Cinderella’s Castle, it later shifted to the American Gardens Theater in Epcot. Epcot & Expansion With its popularity, Candlelight Processional became a centerpiece for Epcot's Festival of Holidays, lasting almost a month. Narrated by celebrities, it's known for subtle yearly changes, including song arrangements and choir pieces. Get in touch! Send questions and comments to 90sdisneypodcast@gmail.com. Links

02 Jul 2024 | 61 - Monorail | 01:23:34
Early Monorail History Monorails, meaning single track railways, date back to 1820 with Ivan Elmanov's prototype in Russia. Henry Robinson Palmer, an English civil engineer, patented the first monorail in 1821, featuring a single rail supported above ground. General Roy Stone designed the first steam-driven monorail, showcased at the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition. ALWEG Monorail The ALWEG Monorail, designed by Dr. Axel Lennart Wenner-Gren, emerged in 1952, with improvements in 1957 that set the standard for modern monorails. Disney Monorails Walt Disney aimed for a futuristic transport system at Disneyland, leading to the creation of the Viewliner Train in 1957, which was later replaced by the ALWEG Monorail after Walt's visit to Germany. The Disneyland Monorail opened on June 14, 1959, featuring innovative designs and was the first to run adjacent to a major highway. Disneyland Mark I to III The Disneyland monorails evolved from Mark I in 1959 to Mark III in 1969, improving in size, capacity, and design. Walt Disney World Monorail The WDW monorail was a significant part of Walt's vision for showcasing the future. The Mark IV monorails, inspired by Learjet designs, were introduced in 1971, featuring unique support structures and smooth rides due to precise manufacturing. Mark IV to VI Mark IV monorails had bench seats, limited standing room, and basic AC. They were replaced by Mark VI in 1989, which featured better air conditioning, automatic doors, increased capacity, and higher speeds. EPCOT Expansion and Disneyland Mark V The WDW monorail system expanded to EPCOT in the late 1970s, with on-site precasting for new track beams. Disneyland introduced Mark V monorails in 1987, designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and manufactured in West Germany. Send questions and comments to 90sdisneypodcast@gmail.com. Links
