26 Jun 2022 | Episode 8: The Week Ending June 24, 1978, Too Much, Too Little, Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad | 02:07:01
Did you ever get to the end of the work week and feel like you were turning bluer than blue due to lack of oxygen? Like you barely had enough energy to do a last dance with your own shadow? Yet as darkness started to fall because the night was closing in, you had that sudden realization that it was the weekend and you felt your brain scream “thank god it’s Friday”! It was a heartache as you longed for your significant other and thought “god how I miss you”. The thought of seeing them tonight would be wonderful. You’d get the chance to remind them that yes, you belong to me. Of course there was that danger that it could be too much, too little, and too late. Still, work was done and you would get to see them, so two out of three ain’t bad. In this episode we take a chance with the songs on the Billboard top 40 from the week of June 24, 1978. With a little luck it won’t be the same old songs. 26 Nov 2024 | Episode 84: The Week Ending November 27, 1971 A Wild Night with One Tin Soldier | 02:08:58
Ah Thanksgiving, that one fine morning in the midst of the week that you don’t have to go to work. Thanksgiving always falls on the 4th Thursday in November which means it is always under the sign of Sagittarius, never Scorpio. When it comes to getting together on this holiday, a lot of people feel they’ve got to be there, after all, it’s a family affair and everybody’s everything. It’s hard to imagine, but there are people who I am sure are tired of being alone on the holiday. I don’t at all want to throw stones if that is what you choose to do, but if not; I’d love to change the world so that you to could cherish the company of others while continuing to respect yourself. This week we spend a wild night with the Billboard top 40 songs from the week ending November 27, 1971. I’m sure the music is a lot different than it was say in the summer of ’42, so rest assured, we will rock steady. 14 Sep 2023 | Episode 59: The Week Ending September 25, 1971 The Night They Drove Uncle Albert Down to Spanish Harlem | 02:23:05
In the ‘70s there were signs that crime was on the uptick. Did you surrender any money as the victim of a stick up? After you were scammed, did you vow I won’t get fooled again? At times it seemed like there was a breakdown in society where there ain’t no sunshine to be found. Yet we all know there was a bigger story in your eyes. You had a look that said I woke up in love this morning with a sweet city woman! This week whatcha see is whatcha get when we take a look at the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of September 25, 1971. I’m not a liar when I say this one is bound to bring out some smiling faces sometimes, if you know what I mean. Episode 24: The Week Ending October 9, 1976 The Wreck of the Rubberband Man Which musical camp did you belong to in the 70’s? Did you say keep on rocking me, did you shake your booty at the best disco in town, did you play that funky music, or did you say get the funk out my face and give me a fifth of Beethoven? This week we try and getaway from all that controversy and get the lowdown of the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending October 9, 1976. Don’t fear the devil woman, she’s gone. 12 Mar 2023 | Episode 45: The Week Ending March 13, 1976 There’s a Kind of Hush All Over Deep Purple | 01:54:02
I can’t do this all by myself. It would really be great if I had a disco lady or a money honey to show me the way. This week we are going to take it to the limit and at the same time get right back where we started from as we visit the golden years of Billboard Top 40 from the Week of March 13, 1976. Maybe in the music I will find a sweet thing that cupid will set me up with so I no longer have to spend another lonely night. Let’s just make sure she is more than just sixteen. Perhaps if we verify that she was born before late December 1963. Yeah, sure, dream on dream weaver. 02 Jul 2022 | Episode 9: The Week Ending June 29, 1974, Billy Don’t Be a Streaker | 01:59:59
You know we don’t have a mean streak and far be it from us to rock the boat, but could this week’s episode be our Waterloo? Maybe we are already gone. Perhaps we need to be thankful for what we’ve got and realize all we really need is the air that we breathe. Come Monday, we may just decide we haven’t got time for the pain and if we wanna to get to rock and roll heaven, we gotta keep on smiling and finally get ourselves together by sundown. Working at the carwash may not need to give us the blues, after all, with all those people coming through, perhaps love is on the radar, and we’ll find somebody to make us feel brand new. This week we are taking care of business by checking out the AT40 countdown from the week of June29, 1974. This show differed from the actual Billboard chart for that week, but don’t worry, don’t try and be a hero, just sit back, relax, and let us worry about which song fell where. We promise not to lose that number. 04 Dec 2022 | Episode 31: The Week Ending December 1, 1973 Ramblin’ Man on the Midnight Train to Georgia | 02:07:36
Back in the 70’s, were you a ramblin' man, never going to the same place twice? When you passed through the Nutbush city limits, did you and your companion think we may never pass this way again? Did you just keep on truckin’ along the highway, or sometimes grabbed a ride on the midnight train to Georgia? In some places you probably were not welcome, and if you tried to engage a local they would just say “leave me alone”. In other places, they would play mind games, and even though you told them I’ve got a name, they would instead call you other things, like the joker or half breed. In frustration sometimes you probably just greeted people with a generic “hello, it’s me”. At the end of your journey, hopefully you felt like you were at the top of the world, and at that point, took a photograph of the scene. This week I promise to uncork that time in a bottle and will show and tell all I know about the Billboard Top 40 from the week of December 1st, 1973. With 12 episodes in the till, there ain’t no stopping us now, and you can’t change that! We started out with big dreams of making it, but not in terms of gold, only in terms of good times. As we explored the boogie wonderland, we found songs that made us want to dance the night away. Songs that reached out to the heart, as if they were pleading, I want you to want me. We heard music that made us feel like being in love with a beautiful woman. There were times we wanted to just go up on the roof and stare at the shadows in the moonlight, pondering the existence of a truly logical song. In this episode we will do a minute by minute examination of the songs from the Billboard Chart of July 14, 1979. Now let’s get on with the main event! 21 May 2022 | Episode 3: The Week Ending May 27, 1972, Back in the Age of the Troglodytes | 01:23:01
What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time. Let's take the average cave man at home, listening to AT40 from May 27, 1972. Perhaps he got a telephone call and he asked his love to speak softly because he just woke up. Perhaps he had to hail a taxi after his hot rod broke down. This week's countdown had some really fun stuff, some great artists, and a few songs we could have done without. Take a rocket with us through space and time as we explore some early 70's hit songs.
20 Sep 2024 | Episode 81: The Week Ending September 20, 1975 Wasted Days and Wasted Nights Playing Solitaire | 02:38:06
The movie Jaws came out in June of 1975, and by September we all had a lot of bad blood about sharks and swimming in the ocean. The movie advertisements said it “may be too intense for younger children”, but I suppose at 17 it was ok. Sometimes it only takes a minute to overcome your fears and what a difference a day makes. I guess that’s just the way of the world. This week we have included celebrity ratings and comments from Nate at the Deep Purple Podcast. It's amazing we can get input from someone with that level of fame. Sure he wouldn’t be classified as a Black Superman, but nevertheless, on his show, he’s the proud one. This week we all provide our feelings for the songs in the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending September 20, 1975. How will Nate’s ratings influence the overall grade of the countdown? Will they be enough to fight the power of Mark and Pete? 03 Jun 2024 | Episode 77: The Week Ending May 31, 1975 Walking in Rhythm on Shakey Ground | 02:20:40
How long has it been since we went back to 1975, it seems like it was back in the podcast old days, but maybe it was only yesterday? For some it was a bad time, when air travel was on shaky ground. The risk of a hijack was all too real and you feared at any moment to hear “get down, get down, get on the floor”! Fortunately for most of us, the only time we heard that was in the disco. This week we do the hustle through the Billboard Top 40 songs from the week ending May 30th, 1975. With a shining star or two, and some magic within, we can say we haven’t said the last farewell to 1975. 05 Aug 2024 | Episode 79: The Week Ending August 6, 1977 I Just Want To Be Your Handy Man | 02:07:19
Do you remember the days of the old school yard? How about getting your first place and having the telephone man put in a new telephone line? You otherwise probably had to be your own handy man back then. In 1977, being able to take a jet airliner down to Margaritaville meant you were livin’ the life. It’s easy for those memories to fade like smoke from a distant fire, but don’t worry baby, we’re gonna give a little bit of a reminder so those memories don’t slide way on down. This week we float on through the Billboard top 40 for the week ending August 6, 1977, and don’t stop early at the very end, the editor may have inserted just a song before I go. 27 May 2022 | Episode 4: The Week Ending May 29, 1976, Physical and Mental Health in the 70’s | 01:50:54
Were you feeling ok back in the 70’s? Did you feel feverish? Were you perpetually hungover because of too much partying? Perhaps the pain and anguish of losing a beloved pet made you feel like you were about to go crazy, as if your whole world was in a blue mist. Maybe you felt like you were a fool to cry and still feel that way after all these years. Did you seek out cures in strange magic, or ask some mystic to “show me the way”? Well, have no fear, because happy days are here again! That’s right, welcome back to the podcast where this time we take a look at the Billboard Top 40 from the week of May 29, 1976. There is a pretty good mixture of rock, funk, and disco in this one, and unfortunately some sap as well. That’ll be the day, but tonight’s the night we get the lowdown on the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of November 13, 1976. Will it be like visiting the best disco in town? 24 Dec 2022 | Episode 34: The Week Ending December 25, 1971 There’s No Place Like the ‘70s for the Holidays | 02:10:55
Merry Christmas baby! It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, especially since I saw mommy kissing the little Saint Nick as they were rocking around the Christmas tree, or where they doing the Merry Christmas Polka? I forget which song they were dancing to, was it Silver Bells, or Jingle Bell Rock? I know I am really hoping for a white Christmas, so we can all go for a sleigh ride. There really is no place like home for the holidays, that’s why I’ll be home for Christmas. If something prevents that, it will be a blue Christmas for sure and all the pretty paper in the world won’t cover that up. One thing I am sure of; all I want for Christmas is an episode featuring the Watermark Productions compilation of the top 40 Christmas songs of all time from 1971 via Santa and the satellite radio. 01 Oct 2022 | Episode 22: The Week Ending September 29, 1979 I’ve Got a Bad Case of Midnight Wind | 01:52:51
Remember when you were lovin’, touchin’, squeezin’, thinking you were the boss, in the driver’s seat and getting ready for the main event. Then she pushed you away and told you were nothing but a dirty white boy and good girls don’t. You responded by saying, please don’t go, don’t bring me down, and why do you lead me on? Ain’t that a shame. Those were good times, but after the love has gone, you were just left with the sad eyes of a lonesome loser. This week we sail on through the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending September 28, 1979. It’s not really spooky that it is full of pop music, and don’t stop until you get enough. 26 Nov 2022 | Episode 30: Disko Hits and Misses (Thanksgiving 1974) | 01:14:51
This week we have a special episode and a special guest. Back in the ‘70s the way we consumed music was different and sometimes limiting. Today you can just stream those songs you think are fire, and whatever your music taste is, you can do it till your satisfied. Back in the day however, you probably couldn’t afford to buy all the individual records or albums containing your favorite songs. If you wanted to get dancing and rock your baby, you may have had to buy one of those knockoff albums and that was just a shame, shame, shame. Hopefully none of your guests wanted to rock the boat, or worse yet engage in some sort of kung fu fighting about the whole thing. If there was a fight, hopefully everyone could pick up the pieces and channel that energy to dance the kung fu instead. This week we review the 1975 budget knockoff album Disko Hits from Pickwick Records featuring The Disko Band. We will compare and contrast the hit versions of the songs with their Disko Band cover versions. There are some hits, but a fair amount of misses as well. We are virtually traveling back to Thanksgiving 1974 for this one. Not sure if we should be thankful for this album.

Rock the Boat: “The Hues (sic) Corporation rocked the charts with this hit performed here by the Disko Band”
Shame, Shame, Shame: “This song, made a hit by Shirley and Company, is performed here by The Disko Band.”

18 Sep 2022 | Episode 20: The Week Ending September 19, 1970 Looking Out My Back Door, I See a Groovy Situation in the Summertime | 02:12:30
In the summertime in the 70’s, you probably went out in the country to escape the war that seemed to have been going on for a long long time. There, a green eyed lady named Lola, or was it Joanne, promised peace will come according to plan. It was good that you took that trip instead of sticking closer to home like you normally would, alone, like a solitary man. All right now, I’ll be there for this episode to listen to the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending September 19th 1970. If some of the songs were subsequently covered, or sampled, I may thing to myself, look what they’ve done to my song ma. It’s a shame. What happens when a magnet and steel come close to each other? Well the two objects come together. Conversely, when the floor has grease all over, then you’re steppin’ in a slide zone. Back in the day, you probably thought two tickets to paradise was just what you needed, only to find that once you got there, you couldn’t wait to be back in the USA. Whatever you did, it was clear you had better fly now and head higher and higher until it looked like you made it to safety. I know a guy that is out to prove he’s the greatest dancer. Oh what a fool believes! He has dreams of living it up in those disco nights where he effortlessly shakes his body down to the ground. He thinks he’s a superman that can just blow all those other sultans of swing right off the floor. I don’t want to witness the tragedy when he goes stumblin’ in and breaks his heart of glass. I don’t know if it’s right, but heaven knows whatever gives him happiness is fine. This week we get reunited with the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of April 21st, 1979. Someone’s knocking at the door. It could be a sophisticated lady, are you going to let her in? Or it could be that the boys are back in town and they are ready to give up the funk and tear the roof off the sucker, are you going to let ‘em in? Of course it’s summer, you should be steppin’ out to soak up some of that sunshine, what an afternoon delight. You should be dancing, shake your booty, if you know what I mean. 28 Aug 2022 | Episode 17: The Week Ending August 23, 1975 The Hamilton Captain, Joe Frank, and Tennille | 02:04:29
Supposedly the number 13 is unlucky, but is this the week when we learn the truth at 17? In fact, there were those in the 70’s who pleaded “please mister please”, don’t choose B17 on the jukebox, because that song could cause a ballroom blitz. Everybody knew that it only takes a minute to go from some jive talking to really bad feelings. If things got really out of hand, you would hear people yell warnings like “run Joey run” or plead for assistance by screaming “help me Rhonda”! Those who escaped could only be grateful to some unknown heroes when they pondered to themselves that someone saved my life tonight. In this episode we keep holdin’ on to yesterday by experiencing the Billboard Top 40 from the week of August 23rd, 1975. Hopefully this time we’re spending is not wasted days and wasted nights. What was it like for you back then, did it seem everything was beautiful, or was it all just a ball of confusion. Do you remember hitching’ a ride from Ohio to go see your Mississippi Queen, or instead did you take the westbound #9? 01 Aug 2022 | Episode 13: The Week Ending July 15, 1972, Too Late To Turn Back Now, We’re In Otta Space | 01:47:02
With the Apollo space program winding down, things had really started moving fast in 1972. We were still quite young and often pleaded with our fathers, “Daddy, don’t you walk so fast; what are you some kind of rocket man?”. Perhaps you had gone a ways and suddenly realized you had forgotten to use the restroom before you left home. Our fathers would just smile and say “It’s too late to turn back now, but I know a place we can go, I’ll take you there”. To you, your mom was a superwoman and yet she would gently remind you that it was summer time, schools out, so let’s just take it easy. She would say “it’s ok to lean on me”, but then remind you to be strong and always hold your head up. Then there were those other kid’s parents. Their moms were more liberated, they drank brandy, and the kids would say “There goes motorcycle momma” as she road by on the back of a Harley, with her old man who looked like some sort of troglodyte cave man conquistador. Those poor kids a lot of the time came home to an empty house and found themselves alone again, naturally asking, “Where is the love?”. In this episode we say how do you do to the Billboard chart of July 15th 1972. Day by day we are getting a lot better at this. 29 Apr 2023 | Episode 52: Our One Year Anniversary Spectacular, The Top 50 Songs of the 1970s | 02:17:53
Tonight’s the night for our one year anniversary show. It’s a family affair as we welcome and are reunited with our special guests Nathan Beaudry and John Mottola from The Deep Purple Podcast. My sweet lord, as green as the way we were when we first began, I can see clearly now how we’ve been stayin’ alive for 52 episodes. We won’t be going as far back as December 1963, but we will be looking at the Billboard top 50 Songs from the 1970s, as broadcast on the AT40 Episode from January 5, 1980. Although there are quite a few foreign acts in this countdown, for the most part it is a big slice of American pie. We’ll be talking about a few bad girls we knew, like Maggie May from Britain who was three times a lady, and my Sharona, who was a true blue American woman. There may be a few silly love songs, and perhaps a stinker, but one bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch. Ah the way we were in the old days. Even though we may have had a run of bad luck, we still looked for a shining star to guide us forward. As a society we asked if love will keep us together? As individuals we asked when will I be loved? The smart ones refused to listen to what the man said and looked for their own dynamite idea for a hustle that could work magic. Those in trouble, or going through a real bad time, begged please mister please cut the cake. The more pragmatic people realized that there were others that had it even worse and said to themselves thank god I’m not Lisa! In this episode we try to remember the songs on the Billboard top 40 from the week of June 21, 1975. So let’s get down and hear the band. Let’s face it; things didn’t come easy in the 70’s. People spent a lot of time searching the want ads and it was hard not to feel down on a Monday when you couldn’t find anything in there. Relationships were strained when he loved her madly, but she didn’t know how to love him, and yet both realized they never can say goodbye. The drumbeat of bad news made a lot of people turn toward the heavens and say “for god’s sake if there were only some way to bring more power to the people”. Some people ignored the bad news, drank their cool aid, had brown sugar and marmalade on their toast, while others were looking for a superstar who would offer their hand and lead them to a bridge over the troubled water. Someone to tell them that it’s not too late, that perhaps the way to bring back joy to the world was right on the tip of their tongue. I humbly ask you to stay awhile and indulge in this week’s podcast where we take a look at the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending June 5, 1971. Do you remember the way we were in 1974? On nice days we enjoyed seasons in the sun, listening to the mockingbird love song, or perhaps catching spiders and snakes for the next show and tell. We were too young yet to join those guys smoking in the boys’ room. Those guys were probably hooked on a feeling of the last kiss they had with that special dark lady, that feeling which is so strong when you’re sixteen. In this episode we rock on and boogie down to the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of March 2, 1974. Thank god the energy crisis '74 didn’t reach the dance floor. This week it’s so good, so right, that we have some guest rankings to go along with ours. Still, there is a potential that there will be a heartache tonight. Will we rise above our individual biases and say “enough is enough”? This week we listen to the pop muzic in the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending November 17, 1979. Will this be ladies night, or something that appeals more to a dirty white boy? Who knows? Damned if I do. This night won’t last forever, so dim all the lights and close your eyes. Oh my Maria, was she the most beautiful girl in China Grove? Even though I was a bit of a ramblin’ man, she still loves me like a rock. Whether I was off on that midnight train to Georgia, or on that Rocky Mountain way seeking higher ground, I always kept her photograph close to my heart. She stuck by me through my indiscretions, even those with that lady Angie. Somewhere in those travels, I began to appreciate the love I lost and realized that at home, I had been on the top of the world, close enough to be knockin’ on heaven’s door. Today, it is with great anticipation that we look for some footstompin’ music in the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of March 4, 1973. You could choose to just keep on truckin’ and be a rambling gypsy man. As you traveled further and further from home, at some point you realized that you had never been this far before. In the distance you saw a woman and thought, who’s that lady? Is it Angie or could it be my Maria? What you see is what you get is not always the undisputed truth. Smiling faces sometimes turn out to be liars. However, we’ve all become wiser as time passes like the summer sand. I just want to celebrate that we won’t get fooled again. We are discerning enough to know that she’s not just another woman in hot pants, and we therefore need to treat her like a lady. We know that you should not be tempted by that sweet hitch-hiker, but instead love the one you’re with. If you’re looking for information on the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending August 7, 1971, then let me assure you that you’ve got a friend in us. That’s the way I always heard it should be. Some may say the past is the past and just don’t look back. We say there is nothing wrong with a little reminiscing. Maybe you took a trip to London town, or some other foreign destination. Chances are, no matter how nice the trip was, at some point you were glad to be back in the U.S.A. Where else could you enjoy those hot summer Hollywood nights? Yes, I love the night life, when we can get up and dance, and then really get off and boogie oogie oogie. This week we come together and are ready to take a chance again on the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of Oct 14, 1978. It’s a laugh, but sometimes reflecting on this music my help you answer that eternal question, just who are you? The last time we had them on, our fans cried for “more, more, more” of John and Nate from the wonderful Deep Purple Podcast. So in order to calm the widespread le freak of our audience, we invited them back to help us celebrate our 2 year anniversary. When the listeners said of John and Nate “we miss you”, they were serious. So when we ask them to be our guests, we were adamant with the guys that if we can’t have you, we don’t want anybody else. After 2 years, nobody has told us yet that we got to give it up, so knock on wood, we’ll be stayin’ alive for a bit longer. This week we check out all the hot stuff from the Billboard’s Top 40 Hits from the Disco Era (Broadcast the week of July 7, 1979). This countdown is a reminder that you should be dancing. Back in 1977, where you looking for a miracle, a shining star, or did you miss the no nonsense approach of Harry Truman? If you went looking for a job, did you get that old line “don’t call us, we’ll call you”? It was difficult for the president right on down to the shoeshine boy. It’s a miracle we made it through those tough times and it really only seem like yesterday. This week we are walking in rhythm to the songs of Billboard Top 40 from the Week of April 12th, 1977. Hello stranger. We’re a little late this week, but don’t give up on us just yet. The editing process took awhile because we sometimes made mistakes and couldn’t get it right. At some point we just said we got to give it up, because every time we thought we were done, the episode kept telling us “Don’t leave me this way!” Maybe I’m amazed at how good the Billboard Top 40 songs from the week ending April 30th, 1974 were. 22 Oct 2022 | Episode 25: The Week Ending October 23, 1971 Ain’t No Sunshine in the Shaft | 01:55:36
Long ago and far away it seemed the world was filled with gypsys, tramps, and thieves. Their smiling faces sometimes could hide the fact you were going to be a victim of a stick up. At that point you felt like there just ain’t no sunshine and you couldn’t imagine a world where there was. Perhaps you felt trapped there by a thing called love. Then one fine morning you decided to get a ticket out of town on the peace train. Well, this week we look back at the Billboard Top 40 from the week of October 23rd, 1971. It is not easy reviewing songs that seem so far away, and for some of the songs, it’s a thin line between love and hate, but I guess you have to crawl before you walk. In this episode we dissect the American Top 40 segment from the week of 5/19/1973. The top 40 songs in America for this week were pretty diverse to say the least, but all in all it is a solid set of songs that had some interesting history behind them. The song list presented plenty of opportunity for Pete and I to add our commentary, praise, and a bit of derision.

That being said, it’s one of those nights that I feel so much joy that I’d like to teach the world to sing! Perhaps even trying out a brand new key. 31 Dec 2023 | Episode 67: Bottom 25 of the Top 80 of 1972 I’m Still in Love with Sylvia’s Mother Layla in the New Year | 01:55:15
I don’t know what you are doing this New Year’s Eve, but back in 1972, in places like the city of New Orleans, there were likely people getting ready to bang a gong with the Witch Queen at midnight. I’m not really sure how they celebrate in other parts of the world; in Hawaii perhaps they express their joy with a coconut. Now, I have never been to Spain, and I am sure their celebrations can’t be described in terms of black and white, but I am willing to bet they are drowning in a sea of love. For myself, you can call it a case of puppy love, but I hope just after midnight to kiss an angel in the morning. This week we declare schools out on the bottom 25 of the top 80 songs of 1972. Don’t say you don’t remember any of them because if so, I’ll tell Sylvia’s mother. As we circle back to 1973, it’s yesterday once more. Chances are you didn’t have a lot of money. Perhaps you were just looking for the right place where peaceful waters run, your own Shambala. Maybe you were looking to re-connect with a missing family member, asking the question “Has anybody seen my brother Louie?” Were you just an uneasy rider on a long train running searching for your perfect diamond girl? You would only express your anguish behind closed doors, clutching your only Kodachrome picture of her. As you looked off into the distance, the smoke on the water cleared and you realized that there has got to be a morning after. 01 Sep 2023 | Episode 58: The Week Ending September 2, 1972 Join Together and Go All the Way | 02:22:41
It was Labor Day weekend 1972. Saturday in the park, did you ask your daddy not to walk so fast, and on the beautiful Sunday did you go for a ride with your motorcycle mama? When you say love, does it make you think of a long cool woman in a black dress named Brandy, with a dream to spend nights in white satin? Perhaps instead you had to say goodbye to love, leaving you alone again naturally. Yet somehow you still managed to hold your head up. Alas, not all relationships are black and white. While you may have failed to spot some backstabbers, which made you ask “where is the love”; there is solace in knowing that everybody plays the fool sometimes. This week we pop that thang and say how do you do to the Billboard top 40 for the week of September 2, 1972. Many of the songs in this week’s countdown scream play rock and roll to any guitar man. Back in October of 1977 we had to accept the fact that the king is gone. Don’t it make my brown eyes blue just thinking about it? I go crazy remembering, it was as cold as ice. Then baby what a big surprise, she did it. She said hang on; help is on its way. At daybreak she got you down from the 7th floor of that brick house by enticing you to come sail away for a change in latitudes down in blue bayou. Well, this week we look back at the Billboard Top 40 from the week of October 29th, 1977. Perhaps we just disagree on how good it was, but that’s rock and roll for you. This week we talk about how back in the '70s, I grew up on a farm down by the lazy river where I had a horse with no name. The horse was sickly, but it had a heart of gold. Then there was the day that I found myself in the court of king heroin. I realized I was runnin’ away and slipping into darkness with no one to depend on. Then came the day I lost everything I own. This week we take a look around at the Billboard Top 40 for the Week of April 1, 1972, and if you believe any of what has been said here, then I GOTCHA! 12 Nov 2022 | Episode 28: The Week Ending November 18, 1978 Double Vision Causes Me to Kiss You All Over | 02:00:15
Back in 1978 was a typical day like another Sunday in Salem where it was fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.? Was that just too much heaven for a blue collar man? When Monday came along, in a strange way, perhaps you felt alive, and were ready to take a chance again. With that double vision now cleared, you left that bottle on the shelf and proceeded straight on back to work. After a time, all that bad blood would recede, and even the French who had labeled you “Le Freak” had a change of heart. This week, ooh baby baby, we travel back through those time passages to have a listen to the Billboard Top 40 from the week of November 18th, 1978. 05 Feb 2023 | Episode 40: The Week Ending February 10, 1973 Dueling Banjos on the Love Train | 02:11:07
Did your ego get so inflated during the 70’s that people would tell you after the last song on the radio that you’re so vain, you probably think that song was about you? Of course some guys would just make a funny face and say “well my name is Danny and that was in fact Danny’s song”. I didn’t have time for any of that, I had ants in my pants, and me and Mrs. Jones had a love jones for some jambalaya. Don’t expect me to be your friend; because I’m trouble man, and when it comes to dueling banjos, I am super fly. This week we go reelin’ and a rockin’ through the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of February 10th, 1973. It’s true that Momma don’t dance, but we are immune to both the rockin’ pneumonia and the boogie woogie flu. 28 Sep 2023 | Episode 60: Special, What is Hip? Remix Project Volume One | 01:29:10
This week we try and answer that eternal question; what is hip? Apparently, back in 2004, it was hip to release an album of remixed songs from the 70s. As the summer breeze fades and we leave behind memories of midnight at the oasis, we listen to the music and critique the 2004 Warner Brothers Release “What is Hip, Remix Project Volume 1”. If you were one of these remix artists, would you let go and express yourself, or would the effort just be a masquerade of the original song. Unless the artist was truly a dream weaver, because of our admiration for the originals, it’s gonna take a lotta love to appreciate these tracks. Back in the 70’s there were just too many people with hurt feelings and bad blood. Relationships fell into two categories, diamonds and rust. Some sadly learned that it only takes a minute for their partner to fly robin fly and head sky high. If you were one of the lucky ones who believed in miracles, you knew who loves you, and sooner or later our day would come. It wasn’t as easy to communicate back in the 70’s as it is now. At best, you could get in touch via the telephone line, but perhaps you had to resort to something more primitive strawberry letter. Perhaps the only thing you could see was the smoke from a distant fire that just seemed to float and float on. You told your love that you just want to be your everything, your handy man, your telephone man, so don’t worry baby. We are just here to take it easy and sway to the music of the Billboard chart from the week ending August 27, 1977. Is there another podcast that does this same thing? Alas it is only you who could decide when you’re just the right size. This week, let’s spend the night together and have a listen to Charo and the Salsoul Orchestra Cuchi Cuchi. As it is, it may be that we’re all alone at the end, and that might make our hearts turn to stone. Seems like we never can say goodbye to the 70s, we just can’t get it out of our head. It is probably because as a nightingale would, we were struttin’ our stuff like a free bird back then. This week we call on the entertainer to be the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of January 25, 1975. How was your love life back in 1979? Were you with someone who made you say “do that to me one more time”, or was it more like “no, enough is enough, don’t do me like that”? Maybe you had two bad relationships in a row and it felt like you were experiencing déjà vu’. Tired of all these head games you took the long way home as you planned your escape. With your new found freedom, you hoped to be third time lucky as you went out cruisin' the local dance club on ladies night. This is it, the Billboard Top 40 from the week of December 15st, 1979. 09 Jul 2023 | Episode 54: The Week Ending June 26th, 1976 Take the Money and Shop Around | 02:25:10
We have to apologize for the long break we took between episodes. I guess it’s a heart ache to say that this is the last episode of Season 1 and yet in reality, it really feels so good. At this point we’ve been stayin’ alive for 53 episodes, but since we feel like we are running on empty, a short break will do us good. But baby hold on, before we go, we are going to shine a flashlight on the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of May 6th,1978. There’s no need to get the deacon blues, we won’t be going away like dust in the wind. If you believe in magic, and with a little luck, we’ll be back in a couple of months. I’ll never forget the day I found myself in the doctor’s office and he said “don’t give me the roundabout, mister can’t you see?”. My response was “doctor my eyes, last night I didn’t get to sleep at all, can you just give me something to help me make it through the night!”. He then said, “I betcha’ by golly wow, no problem, I gotcha!”. Whatever it was he gave me worked. I awoke after a sound sleep to the rockin’ robin letting me know that morning has broken. Look what you done for me doctor, your name may really be Vincent, but to me you are now the candy man. Like the good doctor, a cowboy’s work is never done, and perhaps neither is ours as we jump into the fire that is the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of April 29st, 1972. 11 Sep 2022 | Episode 19: The Week Ending September 14, 1974 (You’re) Having My Earache My Eye (But I Like It) Baby | 02:10:06
At first, maybe you didn’t feel like makin' love, but she was one hell of a woman. She told you things like she never knew love before, and then came you. You were still reluctant, but you took one look at her in those skin tight clothes and thought “just do it baby”. You then went off to do your own thing, like a free man in Paris. A few months later, you got a letter from her saying that she really needed to talk to you and would you please come to Boston. When you saw here again and she told you, you thought to yourself oh my god, she’s having my baby! She didn’t make any demands, she just said “hold me, and rock me gently”. In terms of a commitment, she only said “I’m going to leave it all up to you”. You told her that you would hang in there because I can’t get enough of your love babe. Then a friend told you about the other man, the musician, the jazz man. In a mad fit of rage you went to find him and in a blind fury, you shot him down. As your head cleared and the people stared as if you were some kind of circus sideshow, you realized, oh my god, I didn’t just shoot her lover, I shot the sheriff! You fled, into the hills, deep into the woods, no time to stop and smell the roses, no time to change horses, especially in the middle of a stream. The horse was your only friend and you said to him, “It’s just you and me against the world now”, but then you realized no, you set him free yelling "go on boy, you ain’t done nothin". At last, exhausted, you prayed for death, realizing you would never see your sweet home Alabama. Then, that moonlit night, he came, a wild thing, and he spared you anymore agony. Let’s clap for the wolf man. In this episode we spend another Saturday night listening to the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending September 14th 1974. I know, I know, it’s only rock and roll, but I like it. 28 Jul 2023 | Episode 55: The Week Ending July 9th, 1977 I’m In You; Looks Like We Made It | 02:12:32
It looks like we made it to episode 55! However, this week, the task is not easy, and it may be necessary to have an angel in your arms or even an undercover angel, to do battle with the devils gun. In the ‘70s, pre-cell phone, you had to ask yourself, “whatcha gonna do if the telephone line goes down?” You could have really used a handy man, or more specifically the telephone man. Knowing me, knowing you, the alternative would be to just throw up your hands and say “gonna fly now”, and just hop on that big ol’ jet airliner that would take you higher and higher. This week we got to give it up for the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending July 9, 1977. It will be just a song or 40 before we go. 19 Mar 2023 | Episode 46: The Week Ending March 19, 1977 Torn Between Rod and Al Stewart | 02:11:19
Well we survived the Nor’easter, which was really nothing more than a weekend in New England. If we had gotten a lot of snow, we know it would take a long time to clear. Still, we know that when you sink the shovel into the snow pack, the first cut is the deepest. Those older folks are smart and either retire to a place where they can enjoy those warm southern nights, or make an extended stay in a hotel out in California, instead of waiting for that spring rain to melt all the snow away. I like dreaming, and someday I hope I can meet a dancing queen who is also a rich girl. Then we can fly like an eagle on out of here. In the meantime, maybe I’m amazed by the songs of Billboard Top 40 from the Week of March 19, 1977. 23 Apr 2023 | Episode 51: The Week Ending April 20th, 1974 Help Me I’m a Train | 01:51:55
In the ‘70s it was easy to have an identity crisis. Would you have said I’m a train, a piano man, or a dancing machine? Perhaps you remember doing the jungle boogie with the dark lady after midnight at the oasis? She said, “Come and get your love”. Oh my my, that night I truly got hooked on a feeling, although I felt guilty, because I confess she was an outside woman and so very young. I ultimately sought penance in the Lord’s Prayer. Alas, we could reminisce about things all day, but the show must go on. This week we boogie down to the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of April 20st, 1974. Will it be the best thing that ever happened to me? Probably not, but I’m willing to otherwise let it ride. We did a wild thing this week. Like something your '70s rock and roll beach baby brother might do after partaking in some of that wildwood weed. Call it my mistake, but I’m leaving it all up to you to decide whether it was good or bad. Don’t’ you worry bout’ a thing though, because as we relied on the lord’s prayer to guide us, we think the episode is worthy of a mighty love. Since we only did 25 songs, this week we sped like a jet through the bottom of the Billboard Top 100 songs of 1974. It’s so close to Christmas, you can almost hear those tubular sleigh bells now. We’re back in ‘75 again and somehow it feels like I’ve been this way before. It seems like it's high time we hop in our Chevy Van, get movin’ on, and roll on down the highway in the express lane. This week it's part of the plan to review the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of March 1st, 1975. What kind of emotion will this episode bring? 13 Feb 2024 | Episode 70: The Week Ending Valentine’s Day, 1976 I Write the Deep Purple Songs | 02:26:14
As you look back on the times of your life, what was Valentine’s Day like? Back in the 70s, were you a love machine who used your charms to land a money honey? Did you break the heart of a sweet thing? Perhaps the tables turned at some point and you rode a love rollercoaster with an evil woman. I am sure you found out that love hurts and oh how breaking up is hard to do. Well, one thing I am sure of is that I love music. So wake up everybody, because this week we are going to take a slow ride through the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of February 14, 1976. We may sing a song or two. Won’t you join me, because I surely can’t do this all by myself?
