40 and Infertile - A Fertility Podcast for the 40 and older (40 and Infertile)

Today, we have episode 30 with Infertility Man Jon Summers.  I first heard about Jon after I saw a repost talking about male factor infertility.  He was a voice for those who were male and going through infertility.  It got me thinking that I had not covered any topics on male factor infertility and I had not had many male voices speaking about their experiences with infertility.  So, I reached out to Jon.  Jon was so kind to respond quickly and even though he’s in Australia, we were able to make the time work out.

If you think today’s episode is just for the males in your life, you’re wrong.  He talks about adversity, relationships, the struggle of a cancer diagnosis, the struggle of infertility, and how to talk about it.  It really is a great episode for both men and women to listen too.

This is episode 25 and for this episode we have a warrior story.  Today we have Bring Home Baby Bax  - Alex.  She shares with us her story and experience with adenomyosis, poor egg quality, 9 egg retrievals, 2 transfers, and a cookie fundraiser!

I think it’s so important to share these stories because we can still learn from each other.  We assume those who are under 35 are going to have a super easy time and some will, but some won’t and for those who aren’t I don’t want you to feel alone and I want you to know that there are people here to talk to you and support you.

If you have not had a chance to connect with Alex, she is a wonderful human being.  I’m so lucky to have connected with so many awesome people.  You’ve heard so many of us talk about the kind and caring people we’ve met during this experience and it’s so true.  I’ve gotten so lucky getting to meet so many awesome people.  Alex is one of these people.  She’s so kind, smart, caring, and so so hilarious.  We had such a wonderful time, but we also get  real with what it’s like to have poor egg quality and have to do 9 retrievals.

Heads up.  As usual, we use strong language.  Because when you have infertility you get angry and sometimes an f bomb just makes it all better.  It’s very cathartic and therapeutic.

The second episode of challenging topics happens today.  Today is the controversial topic of birth control. The reason I want to discuss birth control is because it is controversial. There have recently been a lot of discussion about the evils of birth control.  So, today, I wanted to really tackle this topic.  

So, I got help to set the record straight because I’m certainly not qualified to have this discussion on my own. Today's conversation is a thoughtful and informative conversation with Dr. Julia Jaffe about birth control, fertility, and the myths surrounding them.

The discussion delves into the various methods of birth control and their effects on the body. Dr. Jaffe offers insights into the importance of understanding these options, especially for individuals with specific health conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). This segment clarifies that birth control can be a useful tool to manage health concerns beyond preventing pregnancy.

Chiemi and I were brainstorming about what we could talk about on the episode and we decided that it was important to share what was normal to experience emotionally and mentally during this process as well as how to quiet expectations of either ourselves or the expectation of others.  So, we talk about that that means when you’re working with colleagues or have demanding family members or what it means when you’re just struggling to cope.  I think just listening to Chiemi talk, you’ll understand what a gift she has in this space for understanding what it’s like to go through what we go through. She just has this ability not only to understand you, but to make you feel so safe when you’re talking to her.  I think if you’re going through this having someone who “gets it” I mean, really gets it is so key to getting through this easier.  It doesn’t mean you won’t struggle.  It means that when you do struggle, you have a really strong pillar to lean on.  If you’re really struggling, please remember that in the US, the suicide prevention hotline can be reached by dialing 988 and help is available for you.

Welcome to Episode 22.  This is a requested episode from Instagram.  Today, we talk about Donor Eggs and IVF/Egg Donation Abroad.

When I originally recorded this episode it was back around the end of April.  In light of recent events, considering IVF abroad may be something that is coming up for you.  Luckily, Sarah Kowalski of Motherhood Reimagined shares some of her experience and her clients experiences with seeking egg donor abroad and domestically.

If you want to hear Sarah’s story, you can listen to episode 7 where she shares her path to independent parenthood and coming to terms with needing an egg donor.   Today, we focus primarily on the egg donor process and she shares what her experience was like in going abroad and researching using egg donor abroad.  Now, we don’t specifically go into what this experience is like with a partner.  I have someone sharing that experience in a couple of months.  She went through IVF in Mexico and is now doing a cycle in the US.  After her US cycle, she and I were going to have a conversation, so she could have better insight into differences and pros and cons to each.

Egg donation is a complex topic.  I know I can’t cover it all in one episode.  I want to cover more stories and perspectives, so you can understand the experience and hopefully have the information to make the choice that is best for you.

We speak with Dr. Mathew Leonardi, MD about general information on endometriosis and it’s impact on fertility.  I’ve been looking to discuss this topic for quite some time, particularly after I was diagnosed.  Like so many it was initially dismissed by my gynecologist.  With encouragement and a hysteroscopy that did not go as planned, I was finally about to be evaluated for endometriosis.  In today’s episode, we did not review treatment for those experiencing pain as the primary symptom.  This episode is focused primarily on infertility and endometriosis.  I make this distinction because the therapies can be different depending on whether you’re treating only pain or if you’re trying to address the issue of infertility.  

We spend a considerable amount of time discussing endometriosis and its signs and symptoms, as well as the diagnostic tools used.  This disease process is complex and mysterious.  There is still so much we don’t know about it, but Dr. Leonardi does a great job of exploring what we know and don’t know honestly and transparently.  

He is passionate and advocates for the advancement of care for endometriosis patients.  In this episode, I felt my concerns as a patient were heard.

This episode is about IVF Abroad in Mexico

As you all know by now, I’m traveling to Canada for my next IVF cycle.  I’ve definitely encountered some challenges and differences, but now that I know what to expect, I’ve settled in a bit.  But, today is not about Canada.  I’ll create that episode once I’m done with my cycle.  Today is about IVF in Mexico and this is from a perspective of one of our Warriors, Denise of IVF_denisejohnson.  We talk about her experiences in Mexico and her experiences here in the US and we talk about the the advantages and disadvantages.  Of course for many, cost is a big factor and for those who are not able to afford IVF in the US, traveling out of the country might be something to look into.

We typically have stories where we’re talking about struggling to get pregnant.  This story is a little different today.

Today, we’re talking to Christina @christinawangdmd on instagram about how her autoimmune disease, how progression of her disease and her medications have kept her from getting pregnant.  Because of her autoimmune disease, she has had to use a gestational carrier.  So, we do a deep dive into what it’s like to be told you can’t carry your own pregnancy, what she learned for her successful first experience and she reviews some of the struggles and lessons learned as she embarks on her second surrogacy experience.  She is a complete open book and like so many other warriors I’ve had on here, holds nothing back for you.

This fertility journey is filled with triggers.  One trigger that affects many people is the occurrence of Mother's Day.  It will occur every year in May and there will be other triggers that we will encounter along this journey and beyond.  Because of this, I wanted us to have a conversation around grief, trauma, and triggers and ways we can manage our response to them.

Today, I’m honored to have my friend Nicole a fellow IVF and endometriosis and adneomysosis warrior on the show to share her story.

This is Episode 43!  Today, we have Becky Kearns @definingmum and founder of Paths to Parenthub

I think what you’ll notice right away is the gentle soothing manner Becky has about her.  She tells her story about premature ovarian failure in her late 20s and the path she took to egg donation.  She is incredibly vulnerable today in sharing her fears, her thoughts, the struggle that she had during this time in her life.

This is episode 26 and it’s another Warrior Story.

Today, our focus is going to be the emotional ride of infertility over 40 as well as seeking treatment outside of the US.

I wanted to talk to Emily because she has a unique point of view being a therapist.  I think that it’s important to point out that even though she has all the skills and tools to help others who are struggling and grieving, she also struggled.  I think this speaks volumes to the magnitude of the pain that we go through and experience.  So, if you’re struggling, you’re not odd because it seems like everyone else is doing ok.  It might seem like that because we’re all putting on a show for everyone else around us!  This is one of the reasons I wanted to create this space.  This space is safe for you to be angry and safe for you to be sad, safe for you to be jealous.  Safe for you to feel all the feelings, but I do want to say that you should have help and if you really are having a hard time. Today is all about male fertility and infertility with Dr. Samuel Ohlander. I got connected with him because of the amazing Alison Rodgers!  I interviewed her about sperm because she does her sperm Monday videos and I had not yet covered any male factor topics on the show and she graciously accepted my request to review male factor issues.  She casually mentioned Dr. Ohlander’s name during the episode and after the episode I asked if she would be willing to connect me with him and she graciously said yes!!  I’m so BLOWN away by these amazing doctors who respond to me requests and are so kind!!  These people are a special breed!  Dr. Alison Rodgers, Dr. Aimeee Eyvazzadeh the egg whisperer, Dr. Rahi Victory, Dr. Tia Jackson-Bey, Dr. Stephanie Fein, Dr. Jessica Ryneic, Dr. Merhi and of course today, Dr. Samuel Ohlander have all without hesitation accepted my request and have been completely open and willing to answer all and any questions to help this community. Today, we’re discussing international adoption with Karen Snow @infertilitylies.  She tells us about her own infertility story and shares her experience with international adoption.  It’s important to point out that her experience is from the perspective of being a Canadian citizen.  So, if you’re in the US, UK, or Australia where the majority of listeners are listening from, the process is a little different.  You’ll have to check with your local government about which countries there are adoption agreements with.  I’ll put a link in the show notes to some resources.

The first thing to look at might be the Hague convention.  100 nations are a part of the Hague Convention which protects children in the process of intercountry adoption.

I’ve been wanting to speak to an adoption attorney who can speak to adoption both domestically in the US and internationally, but I’ve only been able to locate people who can speak to domestic adoptions.  If this is something you’re interested in as a topic, please reach out to me on Instagram and let me know.

Well, I’ve been missing for a couple of months and I’m so sorry about that.  As you can tell, I am under the weather currently and this gave me the opportunity to focus on the podcast episodes, so maybe it was a blessing in disguise.  I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I am SOOOO grateful to all of the guests, listeners, and supporters who have been so patient with me as I navigate being infertile and having a podcast about infertility.  Thank you so much for your grace.  

Today’s episode isn’t about me though.  It’s about Rebecca @callthestork on Instagram.  She’s here today to talk to us about her experience.  Full disclosure, we recorded this a year ago.  So, her circumstances today are a little different, but her experience is still very valid.  We cover quite a bit today including her multiple autoimmune disorders and how she has gone through 6 IVF cycles, PRP, endometriosis excision surgery, disagreements with moving forward with expanding her family, and ultimately conceiving naturally.  

We certainly go over a lot and she has so much to share.  We spend the first part of the episode really talking about her retrievals and in the second half really breaking things down.  

Rebecca has always been so kind and thoughtful.  She’s always taken time out to check on me and after my laparoscopy she was messaging me regularly and letting me know to take it easy and reminded me to slow down.  She’s been one of the really truly amazing humans I’ve been along this space and I’m so grateful for that.

This is episode 23 and today’s a very special episode for me. Today’s guest is Dr. Aimee Eyvazzadeh the egg whisperer. For those who have not met her, you’re missing out on a great human! If you haven’t figured it out yet, her patients are her biggest fans because she listens to us. I first found out about Dr. Aimee from a friend of mine. I encouraged her to get her eggs frozen because she was turning 35 and I was just turning 40 and I didn’t want her experiencing what I was going through. She did some searching around and found Dr. Aimee and found out that Dr. Aimee had a lot of patients who were 40 and over. She also had this podcast. She encouraged me to call her because I was already to start another cycle. Because Dr. Aimee had made such a big impact on me and teaching me what happens to our fertility as we age, I asked her to come back and discuss these things because I think it’s so important for us to know. I think it really can help women advocate for testing or seek opinions from other physicians who will believe in them and their fertility as Dr. Aimee has for me. This is episode 46 and today’s episode is with Doctor Dina who is a hospitalist and struggling with her fertility in her 40s.  Today’s episode (though this was recorded about a year ago) is all about the roller coaster ride of IVF and the multiple cycles it took for her to get her story.  I’ve had several physicians on the show and sometimes we think that it’s easier for them and it really isn’t.  She had to struggle with being dismissed and turned away like so many of us have.  She struggled with unexplained infertility and the experience of trying to find a fertility team that could help her.  

Like so many of the other amazing warriors, Dina is so kind and wonderful and supportive.  We hit it off instantly and she is just such a lovely person.  I’m grateful that she trusted me with telling her story and experience.  We do cover quite a few topics on this episode and some of the topics I don’t think we think about because of where our focus is during all the egg retrieval phase of our path.  She gives us a lot to think about, but also give us support and we talk about what feelings sometimes come up that may surprise us.  She was ultimately able to find a team to help her and she talks about that experience.

This is episode 24 and today we’re talking about weight gain with IVF.  Our guest is Dr. Stephanie Fein, MD.  She is an internist turned weight loss specialist working exclusively with fertility patients. She was one of my first experts on the show back in Episode 5 where we talked about how weight loss can optimize fertility. One of the reasons that I wanted to talk about this topic is because I was totally struggling with gaining about 15-20 pounds over the span of my last 3 cycles that I just could not shake.  When I started to explore these feelings on Instagram, a lot of you shared the same sentiment.  So, I thought this was a great topic to talk about. Now, I think a lot of us and not all of us have had some battle with weight for many different reasons.  I blame our society’s unrealistic standards for women particularly in the 90s and early 2000s, but I digress.  So, we come into this space with some “stuff” that is already built in and we’re already hating ourselves because some of us feel our bodies are failing us, so I dont think we’re in the right head space. Today, we talk about all of these things and the top 3 things that has helped Stephanie achieve success with her clients.  We talk about the hormones and the expected weight gain with IVF.  In theory, these concepts appear to be so easy, but the application of these concepts and the emotional things we tie to this whole process, IVF and weight loss/maintenance seem to complicate the whole thing.  So, Stephanie and I dive into that today too! Today's conversation is a thoughtful and informative conversation with Dr. Lauren Fogel Mersy and it surrounds intimacy.  Dr. Mersy is a psychologist and a sex therapist.  We talk about what intimacy really means and how we deal with that in the world of infertility.

We talk about the surrogate process from start to finish, but we also talk about some of the challenges of navigating this relationship.  There are a lot of intricacies in building this really special relationship and we talk about some of these challenges today.
