28 Nov 2023 | Ep 197: Modern Manners for Teens | 00:47:56
This episode is for anyone who loves a teenager.
I'm the mom of a teenager and a preteen, and cultural norms and expectations have definitely shifted from my own childhood in the 80s & 90s. Sometimes I feel like I'm learning modern manners alongside my kids instead of teaching them from a place of authority.
My guest Brooke Romney believes that the only thing harder than parenting a modern teen is being a modern teen. In this episode, Brooke and I talk about a few of the rules that stuck out to me from her guide 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens. This was a conversation I didn't even know I needed to have, and I loved it.

01 Oct 2019 | Ep 35: Ask me in 3 months | 00:18:25
This episode is for you if there is something you want to get done before the end of the year.
Today's prompt came from the original 10 Things To Tell You social media challenge.
We all have something that we just keep procrastinating. Let's commit to completing this task between now and January 1. I'm sharing two of the things that I really want to sit down and finish (both on my To Do list for literally years) and a few ideas for things you might want to be held accountable to in the next three months.
Also in this episode I talk about my favorite planner. (And here's the blog post where I talk about how I chose this planner after a million minutes of internet research.)

02 May 2023 | Ep 172: 4 Questions To Tap Into Your 10-year-old Self | 00:46:29
As I head back to my home state of Oklahoma this week to promote The Life Council, I'm feeling nostalgic in every way. Even as life has marched forward, and I entered my twenties, then my thirties, and now my forties, I have found it useful to tap back into the childhood version of me. It reminds me who I am in my core and it reminds me where I came from.
And sometimes, even as I evolve in a positive way, I need that reminder of where I started. I want to tap into that original spirit.
This episode has four questions to ask yourself about your childhood self. We're going to talk about:
Place
People
Our bodies
Our dreams
Maybe you think about your childhood self all the time. Maybe it's been a long time since you really remembered that version of you.
This episode and these questions will bring you back to who you were when you were young.

This episode is for anyone who can't get enough of the book talk.
We didn't have time for me to share ALL the great books I've been reading on the recent reading episode, so this is a little bonus to tell you all about my current book stack, including a new novel that's a contender for favorite of the year, and a nonfiction book that I am forcing myself to read with an open mind.
I'm also sharing a few of the books in my immediate To Read pile, plus the three books that I've preordered for fall release.

18 Sep 2020 | BONUS: Break the Good Girl Myth with Majo Molfino | 00:38:04
This episode is for anyone who struggles with her inner "good girl."
I read Break the Good Girl Myth: How To Dismantle Outdated Rules, Unleash Your Power, and Design a More Purposeful Life by Majo Molfino this summer and the whole idea resonated with me: identifying as a good girl, wanting to be seen as a good girl, and simultaneously wanting to get out of that trap.
Even at 40-something, I am still dismantling these parts of my identity, and I could see myself - and so many of my friends - in the five different types of “good girls” that Majo writes about.
In our conversation, Majo shares a little more about “Breaking your good girl myth MEANS” and I share the parts of me that still sees myself a good girl, where that feels healthy and where that feels woefully outdated.

29 May 2019 | Ep 18: 10 Thoughts on Anxiety | 00:46:47
This episode is for you if you’ve ever struggled with anxiety or ever watched a loved one form coping mechanisms to handle their anxiety.
I have more than 10 things to tell you about anxiety, but here is a place we can start the mental health conversation. In this episode, I'm sharing my lifelong anxiety starting in childhood, through the teenage and young adult years, after I had children, and into the present day.
I'm talking about what anxiety looks like for me, healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms, and the things that have given me the most relief.
The goal of this type of episode is just to share a common human experience. I hope that it makes you check in with your own body, be honest about mental health struggles, and bring about some understanding of the anxiety that millions of people live with every day.

16 Mar 2021 | Ep 108: Best Books Lately (with Meredith Monday Schwartz and Kaytee Cobb of the Currently Reading podcast) | 01:28:30
Not at all sorry to have two books & reading episodes in a row! Especially because my guests for this Best Books Lately conversation are two of my favorites voices in the book-ish world.
Meredith Monday Schwartz and Kaytee Cobb are the two women behind the Currently Reading podcast and I think that you will love their varied recommendations in our conversation. (I contribute almost nothing of value to this episode since my reading habits have been so out-of-whack, however I do talk about a few recent best sellers that just didn’t do it for me.)
I hope hearing us talk about what books we’ve loved (or haven’t) so far in 2021 will spark your own conversations or that you share on social media.

23 Jan 2025 | Ep 253: Regrets and Reflections on 15 Years of Working on the Internet | 01:18:25
This month marks FIFTEEN years that I have been pursuing a career primarily by sharing myself on the internet. Starting with the Hollywood Housewife blog in January 2010, then building a social media presence, then becoming a podcaster and an author, and I have so many stories and thoughts to share about the last decade and a half.
On this episode, I'm talking about the things I did right, the things I definitely got wrong, and how I've evolved right along with the World Wide Web.

14 Nov 2023 | Ep 195: Why do smart people love dumb TV? | 01:12:15
This episode is for anyone who has asked themselves why they're so invested in what is clearly outrageous, manipulative, and phony "reality" television shows.
I watch Real Housewives every weekday on my lunch break, and as I've gone through phases of watching with both fascination and disgust, I’ve asked myself: why do smart people love dumb tv? What is it that we’re drawn to? Why do we get so sucked into the drama? Is it aspirational or escapism or something darker or is it just not that deep?
And so I decided to explore that topic with the perfect guest: Matt Marr, cohost of the Reality Gays podcast. In this episode, Matt and I talk about our history of reality tv watching (starting with the Real World in the 90s), and we talk about how we think reality TV has changed culture, why we’re so invested in the lives of these reality TV personas, and so much more. We talked for over an hour and didn’t even scratch the surface of all that we could have discussed.
FULL SHOW NOTES HERE
We do have an extended cut version of this episode over on the Secret Stuff patreon page, where Matt and I talk about our shared Oklahoma roots and I'll also be releasing a personal episode over there this week about my time working in reality television in the early 2000s.

21 Mar 2024 | Ep 212: 10 Questions For Every Room You're In (with Emily P. Freeman) | 01:15:00
One of my greatest teachers of the last few years is author, podcaster, and speaker Emily P. Freeman. I have learned so much from her work and devoured her latest NEW YORK TIMES best selling book How To Walk Into A Room: The Art of Knowing When To Stay and When To Walk Away.
Emily says, "Our whole life is like a house, and every commitment, community, role, and relationship is like a room." In this conversation, Emily and I continue her room metaphor and she asks 10 Questions from her book that we can use to discern our own sense of belonging, and our choices to stay or leave.
The framework of these 10 questions is perfect for 10 Things To Tell You and I loved unpacking each of these questions and concepts with Emily.

24 Aug 2021 | Ep 131: Teaching people to grieve with me (A conversation with Amy Ortloff) | 01:11:47
Content warning: Child loss and suicide
This episode is one of the most tender and important I’ve ever shared on this show, and I am just so deeply grateful to Amy Ortloff for having this conversation with me and letting me make it public.
In 2017, Amy Ortloff lost her middle child Ryan to suicide. Ryan was just 17 years old. Less than a week after his death, Amy took to her personal Facebook page and starting sharing every single day. She began by sharing stories about Ryan, family memories and examples of the kind of kid he was. She didn't want her child to be forgotten.
As the weeks went by, deep in grief, Amy also started sharing her own experiences of this devastating time she was living through. She shared what she was learning in therapy, she set and shared her personal boundaries for interaction for those in her small town Oklahoma community.
Amy's sharing was raw and vulnerable. It was heartbreaking and powerful. I made a point to read her posts every day that first year after Ryan.
This episode is about the effects of that real-time sharing during the hardest time of her life, the positive and the negative. Amy was teaching us how to grieve with her, and it made an enormous impact on me long before I ever wrote a book about sharing stuff.
If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or text TALK to 741741.

03 Mar 2020 | Ep 55: Living Abroad with Kids (10 Takeaways with Julie Stillwell) | 01:30:05
This episode is for you if you've ever dreamed of living abroad with your family for a year.
I've been dying to share this conversation with my dear friend Julie Stillwell. In 2018, Julie and her husband Tom took their two young daughters to live in Amsterdam for one year. All four had lived in Los Angeles their whole lives, so this was a family adventure with a hundred takeaways.
We talk about the logistics of moving abroad and the emotions of both leaving and adjusting. We talk living without a car and sending their kids to the International School. We talk about style and food in Amsterdam versus the United States. We talk about why life seems simpler and slower in this part of Europe, and how temporary absence can actually deepen relationships.
There are so many nuggets of wisdom and things to think about in this episode. It made me realize that sitting down with a friend and giving full focus to something big in their life isn't something I do enough.

12 Sep 2020 | BONUS: Decorate your home for the seasons without buying more stuff. (A conversation with Myquillyn Smith, The Nester) | 00:40:25
Myquillyn Smith (aka The Nester) has influenced the way I think about decorating my home for years, through her blog, social media, and books. Her latest book Welcome Home is about decorating your home for the seasons without buying a bunch of expensive decor, and how you can signal the natural cycle of the year using scents and textures and sound. These concepts apply even when you live somewhere where the temperature doesn't change much!
Myquillyn gives me a little pep talk about creating a home that is the background for family memories, and she reveals a fairly genius way to decorate for the holidays that removes a bulk of the stress. (Why hadn't I thought of this before??)

18 Jan 2021 | BONUS: Women Should Be Talking More About This (A Conversation with YARLAP Founder MaryEllen Rieder) | 00:38:11
In this BONUS episode we’re talking about pelvic floor health, which is something I’ve been wanting to talk about on the show for a long time. I REALLY wish women talked more about this topic with one another, and understand the effects of pelvic floor health on our overall health, including our sex lives and incontinence.
My guest is MaryEllen Reider, co-creator of the women’s wellness device YARLAP. The YARLAP is an FDA-approved device, and it recently won an Women’s Health FEMTECH award. (Please note: I have not tried it yet.)
We talk about the importance of pelvic floor, what is happening in your body when you orgasm (or don’t), when you can’t control your urge to urinate, and more.
MaryEllen offered a discount code to listeners, (enter Joy at checkout for 30% off) but I want to be clear that this is not sponsored, nor is it a partnership or affiliate. I just wanted to start this conversation among women.

22 Dec 2020 | Ep 96: Book Club's Best Books of the Year 2020 | 01:50:42
This is always one of my favorite episodes of the year!
My real life book club friends Yasmin Dunn and Stephanie Newman-Smith join me for a long and lively conversation about some of our favorite books of 2020.
We talk about how the pandemic affected our reading life and why our book club didn’t meet for 7+ months.
Before we share some of our favorites, we also use the episode as a bit of stand-in for our regular meeting and you can hear us discuss our December book club pick A Burning by Megha Majumdar.
Then we each share 3 or 4 of our favorite books of the year. Because I had already shared most of mine on earlier episodes, I was really excited to hear Yasmin and Stephanie’s picks, since they were outside the box of what we’ve already talked about on the show in the last few months.
I do plan to do a BONUS episode in the last few days of the year, talking through a few more interesting books I read in 2020 that didn’t make it into this conversation.

This episode is for anyone looking to transition well between the end of summer and beginning of fall.
Whether you mark the end of summer by the school calendar, the weather, or football season, we have come to the end of the season.
In this episode, I'm walking through 8 questions to ask yourself as we close one chapter of the year and enter into another. 21 Nov 2024 | Ep 246: A Funeral For Twitter | 01:18:13
I joined twitter in 2009 and for 15 years - until this very month - it has been my favorite social media platform. The one place where I am only a consumer and not a creator. The place where I met my earliest online friends. The place where I made most of my best online memories following breaking news, political, scandal, and pop culture.
And the only other person I know who has been obsessed with twitter for as long as I have been? None other than friend and podcaster Jamie Golden. Jamie and I have shared many obsessions over the years - and I write about her in The Life Council as the Fellow Obsessive friend - but our love of twitter has always been our biggest shared passion. And despite saying numerous times over the years that we'd never leave, we both decided in the last few weeks to depart our formerly favorite space.
And thus, a funeral for twitter.
In this conversation, Jamie and I talk about our earliest days on twitter, why we loved it so much, our favorite moments, a few of our regrets, and, of course, why we're leaving.
You don't have to care about twitter to enjoy this passionate conversation between friends. My hope for this episode is that you'll get a little glimpse into some social media history and that you'll see yourself in a discussion about how being online has changed us.

13 Aug 2019 | Ep 28: Motherhood through adoption with Lindsay Lawler | 01:11:25
This episode is for you if you or a loved one has ever struggled through the fertility process, or if you’re interested in the topic of adoption.
I am so happy to share this conversation with one of my dearest friends, Lindsay Lawler, who recently became a mother when she adopted her baby girl on Thanksgiving Day 2018.
Lindsay shares the story of her experience with infertility, medical treatments, and adoption. As a reminder, neither Lindsay nor I are medical experts OR adoption experts. We both encourage you to do all your research when planning to grow your family.
In this episode, we discuss:
listening to your body
finding out your egg count
connecting with your doctor
marriage strain
how adoption should NOT be a last resort
staying positive but also allowing yourself emotions
finding an adoption agency
trusting the outcome
fears after placement

08 Dec 2020 | Ep 94: Don't Be A Zombie (A pep talk for your intuition) | 01:03:42
This episode is for anyone who has struggled in 2020 to listen to their intuition.
These words are for myself as much as they are for you. In this year of uncertainty, of noise, of conflict in relationships, of missteps and self-doubt, I have come into this holiday season unable to tap fully into my own intuition.
I’m sharing about:
WHY we need to listen to our intuition now more than ever
HOW to listen to our intuition when we’re new to the practice or need a reset
ANXIETY and intuition and how it’s often hard to discern the two (but I have one failsafe method)
RELATIONSHIPS and intuition

and
GETTING IT RIGHT

05 Jan 2021 | Ep 98: How To Start a Book Club | 00:50:04
This episode is for anyone who wants to start a book club!
**Have you purchased my new book Share Your Stuff. I'll Go First? If so, SIGN UP FOR PREORDER BONUSES HERE.**
People love the idea of being in a book club, but I think most of us would rather join an already formed group, with procedures in place and a warm and fuzzy vibe already established. But if that isn’t readily available to you, guess what the next best thing is? Start one yourself!
GET MY BOOK CLUB BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS HERE
It doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. You don’t have to have a lot of people (really!) and you don’t have to have a perfectly articulated theme or objective. What you want to do is read, and then talk about what you read with someone else. It really is that simple.
But beyond that, it’s nice to have some basics:
Identify your WHY
Choose members wisely
Decide on some logistics (like how to choose a book, who leads the discussion)
Set expectations early
Have your first meeting
Adjust as necessary
Sure, there are some details that can be fun or tedious: choosing a schedule, consistent communication), but start with the fundamentals, keep it as simple as possible, and figure out what REALLY works for your group.

17 Jan 2023 | Ep 157: True Crime as Entertainment (A Victim's Story with Amy B. Chesler) | 01:07:43
This is an important topic. Since the explosion in popularity of the true crime genre over the last decade, I've questioned the ethics of crime as entertainment. Many of us have become obsessed with grisley stories of murder.
But have you ever actually talked to someone whose loved one was murdered? Would it change your opinion on the true crime entertainment genre?
This episode is a conversation with author, award-winning blogger, and actress Amy B. Chesler. Amy's mother was murdered in 2007 and her book Working for Justice: One Family's Tale of Murder, Betrayal, and Healing is about the events before and after this tragic event.
Amy surprised me with her take on the popularity of the true crime genre and it definitely affected how I consume these stories.

Introducing a new series of the podcast called ONE THING where I host conversations with interesting people and ask the ONE THING they would tell you.
I'm kicking the series off with my friend Amy B. Harris. Amy has been a producer, writer, and show runner on some of the most iconic shows of our lifetime. Her credits include Sex and the City, Gossip Girl, The Comeback, The Carrie Diaries, The Wilds, and more. She's also a mom raising her daughter in Hollywood, which is how we met and became friends.

18 May 2021 | Ep 117: 10 Financial Tips for Freelancers (with The Freelance CFO Katelyn Magnuson) | 01:15:50
One of the things we’ve never discussed on this show is MONEY. Even though I know it’s one of the topics that we wish people spoke more openly about.
A lot of us are flying pretty blind in our money situation. Are we making enough? Are we saving enough? Are we spending or investing it right? How much money could I *actually* make if I started a side hustle?
A year of the pandemic has made a lot people rethink their careers, and there’s a lot of interest in going full time freelance, pursuing a passion, or monetizing a creative pursuit.
My guest for this episode is Katelyn Magnuson, aka The Freelance CFO, and she’s here to give us 10 Tips for Going Freelance. We start with some basics, but i’ve been in the freelance game for over a decade, and I still learned a lot in this conversation.

26 Sep 2023 | Ep 188: Moms and the Mental Load (with Dr. Morgan Cutlip) | 00:54:20
This episode is for moms who are drowning in this season.
After years of rarely talking about parenthood on this show, this topic suddenly continues to find me. I'm not sure if this because of my kids' ages (11 & 13) or just the season I'm in, but motherhood is something I want to talk about more now than I did when the kids were young.
My guest today is Dr. Morgan Cutlip, a highly sought after relationship expert, who has helped hundreds of thousands of people worldwide learn how to form and maintain healthy relationships. Dr. Morgan has been a featured relationship expert with Good Morning America, Teen Vogue, and The New York Times. Her new book, Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself, is out now.
Dr. Morgan and I talk about motherhood as an identity and the mental load of parenting that so often falls more heavily on women. We also discuss how that affects our mood, our partnerships and sex drive. I even share a real life example of this dynamic happening in my home right now.
If you've been carrying the mental load in your family, I hope this conversation resonates with you and that you'll know you're not alone.

This episode is for anyone looking for an anchor to their day.
I promise I'm not going to tell you to get up at 5am. I hold the word "morning" pretty loosely in this context, but I do think a time to pause and commit to ritual at some point in your day can bring much needed structure.
On this episode, I'm sharing my personal morning routine and giving you a few different ways to think about this topic.

17 Feb 2023 | BONUS: 4 Ways To Model Well-Being For Generations To Come with Toye Penny | 00:36:01
In this busy season I’m so aware of how neglectful I can get about my own self care. When life feels crazy, the first thing to fall to the bottom of my priority list is ME. And I’m becoming increasingly aware of what I’m teaching my own children in this realm.
So when Toye Penny reached out to share 4 ways to “Model Well-Being for Generations to Come” I knew I needed to hear what she had to say. Toye shares helpful, thoughtful and practical ways to love the next generation by loving ourselves well first.
Toye Penny is a Luxury Well-Being Strategist, Author of Love “Them”, Love You More, and creator of The Love You More Method℠. She specializes in helping High Performing CEO Moms put their oxygen mask on first so they can save everyone around them. Toye is a wife, mother to 3 daughters, and she seeks to intervene in women’s lives so children won't have to be the result of generational trauma passed down from their mothers. You can learn more about her work by going to ToyePenny.com.
I loved chatting with Toye and hope you take as much from this conversation as I did.

This is the first in the REVISIT series, where we're going to look at things from the past and see how they affected us then and how we feel about them now. Today's topic: Judy Blume.
Specifically, her three novels:
Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret.

My guest on this episode is my childhood friend Cara Pence, and we get a little emotional as we delve into the more painful themes of these books. This is a true conversation between friends.

07 Nov 2023 | Ep 194: On Endings and Intuition (with Meg Tietz) | 01:21:18
10 Things To Tell You exists because Meg Tietz put a microphone in my hand nearly a decade ago when she launched the Sorta Awesome podcast and asked me to be a regular cohost. That invitation changed my life, along with the thousands of Sorta Awesome listeners who have been touched by Meg's words and wisdom for all these years.
Meg Tietz has long been a pioneer in the online space. She was one of the earliest mommy bloggers to build a large audience and one of the earliest independent podcasters in the girlfriend chat genre. I am lucky enough to have been friends with her since our childhood years in Oklahoma and have watched the way that she has shaped an entire corner of the internet.
Meg recently announced that she is bring the Sorta Awesome podcast to a close, and in our conversation here we reminisce about her online journey and talk about what it means to decide to end something that is going well, simply because you know it's time.

14 Mar 2021 | BONUS: Tremaines Wave Hello from ONE YEAR of the Pandemic | 00:52:05
In March of 2020, just three weeks into the global pandemic bringing Los Angeles to a standstill, we recorded a family episode called Ep 59: Marry the Person You Want to Quarantine With (the Tremaines Wave Hello).
And now we're back....only it's been ONE YEAR of the pandemic and we still haven't returned to school or work full time. Our family (me, my husband Jeff, our 11 year old daughter Lucy, and our 9 year old son Finch) returned to the couch and the microphone to talk about the last year has looked like for us.
We used the loose framework and questions from Episode 106: 10 Questions To Mark One Year of the Pandemic to talk about the challenges of joys of the last twelve months.
I hope that our family conversation sparks one of your own, whether you record it or not.

20 Oct 2020 | Ep 87: 3 Mistakes I've Made Recently | 00:41:43
Mistakes. We’ve all made ‘em.
In this episode, I wanted to share 3 mistakes I’ve made recently (personally and professionally) as a jumping off point for talking about missteps, how we corrected them, and what we learned.
Of course, not all mistakes are equal. And we don’t always want to harp on things we did wrong. But it can be helpful to hear about other people’s mess ups, and talking about it can hold us accountable for our own actions.
Because next time we’ll do it differently.
Right?
This episode features listener voices at the end sharing their own recent mistakes.

27 Jun 2023 | Ep 180: Four Metaphors for Turning 44 (a birthday episode) | 00:43:00
June is my birthday month, and every year I create a personal episode for the occasion. This year, instead of waxing nostaligic or sharing what I've learned in the last year, I'm taking us on a journey.
Of metaphors.
I'm sharing four metaphors that feel especially apt for life right now:
One Point (clap clap) At A Time
There are years where you wander and years when you're on the road
Accelerate through the turn
You are not lost
I hope you take something from this episode that helps you on your path.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I have long wanted to have this conversation with my friend, stylist, and breast cancer survivor Bethany Winters.
Content Warning: Bethany speaks candidly about her experience in this episode. Please take care while listening.
In 2016, at age 47, Bethany Winters was diagnosed with Grade 3 Stage IIB Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. What followed was a year of intensive treatment, including chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and total hysterectomy.
In this episode, Bethany shares 10 Things about breast cancer survivorship, and how it's not ever really over even when declared "cancer-free."
This is a tender and important conversation.

This episode is for anyone who struggles with outside influences they can't shake.
I thought when I turned 40 that I had turned a corner in my personal developement, that the shift into caring less about other people's opinions would also mean that my inner critic would pipe down.
But here I am, a few years down the road, and the voices from my past live rent-free in my head and their chatter can affect my confidence and my choices.
In this episode, I'm talking about the five types of voices that rattle around in our heads and how we can identify them and turn down their volume.

11 Apr 2023 | Ep 169: Battle Buddies (with Beth Silvers and Sarah Stewart Holland of Pantsuit Politics) | 01:03:43
In the framework of my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, the duo behind the Pantsuit Politics podcast could be considered Business Besties or Old Friends, but I see them primarily as BATTLE BUDDIES.
Beth Silvers and Sarah Stewart Holland have spent nearly ten years publicly discussing the American political landscape on the podcast Pantsuit Politics, and, well, you can imagine why I see them as having walked through a battle together.
Somehow, though, these two women have navigated these conversations with integrity, grace, and - especially - nuance.
I've been a fan of Beth & Sarah for years now, and respect their work so much. It was honor to have them on the show to talk about their friendship and partnership.

04 May 2021 | Ep 115: Taking up space (with Kate Kennedy of Be There in Five) | 00:59:32
When I first found Kate Kennedy's podcast Be There in Five, I just wanted Taylor Swift analysis. But I stayed for her series on Mommy Bloggers. Then I couldn't get enough of her pop culture commentary, hilarious tangents, and well-researched episodes about everything I wanted to talk about (that other people weren't talking about).
I also texted every podcast friend I have to ask, "Have you seen what Kate Kennedy is doing?" Because her show was defying all the rules. Be There in Five's episodes are often 2+ hours long, and mostly solo. It was empowering to watch a woman unapologetically take up so much space with her words and ideas and air time. AND be smart and funny on top of it.
So I was beyond excited to have this conversation with Kate about leaning into your skillset, finding your own personal "football game," and what "being authentic" means when you're one person online and another with your family.

Old friends and new friends have different benefits and fill really different spaces in our lives. I wanted to have these conversations with two women who mean a lot to me, and encourage YOU to reach out to the old friends who have been there through every season, and to feel gratitude for the new friends in your life who only know the most current version of yourself.

08 Oct 2019 | Ep 36: Jenna Fischer & Angela Kinsey are best friends and Office Ladies | 01:08:32
This episode is for you if you met your best friend at the office.
Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey are well known for their iconic roles as Pam Beesly and Angela Martin on one of the most beloved tv shows of all time, The Office. But in real life they are also best friends, and now they're business partners launching their new podcast Office Ladies.
On this very special episode, Jenna and Angela talk with me about one of my favorite topics: friendship. We talk about childhood friends, how hard it is to make good friends as adults, and the trickiness of friendship when the dynamics change.
Angela shares her biggest heartbreak with a friendship, and Jenna talks about a time when her feelings were hurt in a friendship. Plus I tell the story of the two VERY awkward ways I met each of these women, and they tell me the origin story of their friendship on set all those years ago.
This episode is PACKED with stories, laughs, and a few tears.

31 Oct 2024 | Ep 243: Best Books Lately (with Sophie Hudson) | 01:34:21
Reading is always the best form of therapy, distraction, entertainment, and education. And in this episode we talk about titles that serve all of those purposes.
Sophie Hudson (aka Boo Mama) is the co-host of The Big Boo Cast and she's also the author of seven books, including her latest A Fine Sight To See. She is always so fun to talk to and we had a blast talking about how long we've known each other, where we first met, how we both feel strongly about women in leadership, and, of course, the best books that we've read lately.
JOIN THE SECRET STUFF BOOK CLUB
As usual, my book selections were all of the place. And as a former English teacher, Sophie recommended all kinds of books to make us feel and think.

25 Feb 2020 | Ep 54: Best Books Lately with Jessica Turner + A Conversation about American Dirt with Stephanie Newman-Smith | 01:29:36
This episode is for you if you love to read (and follow literary controversies).
Book episodes are the best episodes! We spend the first half hour talking about the best books we've read lately with Jessica Turner, and we take a brief detour to talk about #Bookstagram and our current reading habits (including a new hobby Jessica picked up and the #ReadYourBooks challenge she's hosting online).
In the second half of this extra long episode, I'm joined by my real-life book club friend Stephanie Newman-Smith to talk through the layers of controversy around the novel American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. We talk about who can tell what stories, how the publishing industry is complicit in silencing non-white voices, and the bizarre marketing missteps around the novel that Oprah picked for her book club.

05 May 2023 | BONUS: Create Anyway (A conversation about art and perfectionism with Ashlee Gadd) | 01:14:32
As someone who has been writing and creating on the internet for over a decade, I know first hand all the challenges that one can face in their pursuit of creative work. The desire to create is there, but the obstacles are real, especially if you become a parent and feel like your time, resources and energy are limited. My guest, Ashlee Gadd, is the perfect person to speak to his as she has just released a book called Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood
Ashlee and I ended up talking for two hours about art and perfectionism, how it takes a village to create good work, and the social media of it all. We also took a tangent and had a fascinating discussion about paid communities (including Patreon - where I host Secret Stuff), and metrics and some of the more in-the-weeds parts of content creation. That part of the conversation will be available to Secret Stuff members only.
JOIN SECRET STUFF HERE
I felt so inspired after talking with Ashlee. You don’t have to be a writer or online creator to enjoy this conversation. All of us are wired for some sort of creative expression and life can always get in the way of that. You can buy Ashlee’s book Create Anyway wherever you buy books. I hope this conversation inspires you to pursue your own creative outlet with abandon.

07 Apr 2024 | Sunday Stillness: What are your friendship philosophies? | 00:10:16
My 5 Friendship Philosophies are:
Friendship is a TO DO
Believe the Best
Just Go
Like Every Selfie
Your Spouse Is Not Your Best Friend
I explain these all in more detail in The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, but I also encourage the reader (and the listener) to find their own friendship philosophies. Rules to live by that will make your connections stronger and your mental load lighter.
This Sunday, sit with these ideas and also come up with your own.

11 Apr 2024 | Ep 215: How To Center Yourself (When You're Spinning Out) | 00:58:41
Maybe it was a weird conversation or an offhand remark or a comment on a social media post, but whatever happened, you're spinning out. This circumstance has tapped into all of your securities and now you're filled with self-doubt or anger or unworthiness.
How do you recenter yourself? I'm going to share 5 ways I've learned to quiet my mind amid chaos and guess what - I am NOT recommending journaling or meditation. I love both of those things (and they can be helpful), but I want to give you a few new tools to consider when you're having one of those days.

This episode is for you if you’ve had any recent revelations you want to share.
If you’re a regular listener to this show, you are probably the type of person who is striving for growth, who aims to be self-aware, and who is paying attention. And if you’re paying attention, you’re learning. Always.
So this week I'm sharing with you a few of my own personal recent revelations (some shallow, some deeper), and I am actively encouraging you to share your own. Not only privately or in your journal, this time I’m challenging you to share on social media.
I want you to tell us a recent revelation you’ve had in your life. It’s an exercise in sharing of yourself AND I just want to see what people are thinking about these days. It helps me see the pulse of the listeners and create content for the show.

This episode is for you if you forgot to self reflect about the new decade on New Years Eve.
Happy first birthday to 10 Things To Tell You! 🎉 We're celebrating one year of good questions and solid conversations. In the beginning of this episode, I share some of the best episodes of the past year (both statistically and personally) and reflect on making these first 50+ episodes.
After that we get down to the central question: Who were you 10 years ago? This is a great ice breaker question OR a chance to see if you remember the beginning of the last decade the same way your friends and family do. Who was 2010 YOU, and would she be happy with 2020 you?

06 Jun 2024 | Ep 223: You Only Die Once (a conversation about living with Jodi Wellman) | 00:51:53
Jodi Wellman is focused on death. And she wants you to think about it more, too.
Death is (clearly) not a popular topic, and something most of us avoid thinking about at all costs. But Jodi believes that knowing you have something to lose can help you live like you mean it. Her new book You Only Die Once: How To Make It To The End With No Regrets can walk you through making the most of your time on this earth.
In this episode, author and speaker Jodi Wellman shares 5 ways to live like you're dying:
Count your Mondays (quantifying your time can be remarkably clarifying)
Diagnose the dead zones (areas in life that feel dead inside)
Identify your deathbed pre-grets (regrets-in-the-making that can still be course-corrected)
Live wider (with vitality) and deeper (with meaning): identify a list of enlivening endeavors
Pick one small thing to take action on at a time

This episode is for you if you have a pet.
This is the last show I ever thought I would do, but I just have to hand it to my dog. I'm asking you to reflect on what your pet brings to your life (now or in the past).
I'm sharing about why we got a dog when I was so opposed to it, and the role he played in a recent scary event in our life.

24 Jan 2023 | Ep 158: Sexism and Ageism Had a Baby and Called It Menopause (a conversation with Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz) | 01:14:55
This conversation is for anyone who will go through menopause, is currently going through menopause, or who has already gone through menopause.
Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz is my personal gynecologist and I trust her completely with the information she shares in this episode about the changes that women go through biologically, hormonally, physically, and emotionally. She's recently published Menopause Bootcamp: Optimize Your Health, Empower Your Self, and Flourish As You Age.
In this conversation we talk about her path to this work that combines holistic and modern medicine and her compassion and mission to help other women find the answers they need for this next stage of life.
Don't be scared by the "m" word. This conversation (and this information) is helpful, thoughtful, practical, and important.

28 May 2024 | BONUS: Is Everyone Happier Than Me? (4 Ways To Be Happier Online with author Sarah Bragg) | 00:45:55
It's a question we've all asked ourselves at some point....Is everyone happier than me?
A relatable thought made worse by the perfection of social media and knowledge that life could go take us on a hundred different paths. Did we choose the right one?
It's also the title of Sarah Bragg's new book, where she explores this topic with essays and stories from her own life and parenthood.
In this episode, Sarah gives us 4 ways to be happier online (since that's such a huge contributing factor to this question).
I loved this conversation with Sarah and know I'm not the only one kept awake at night with comparison and curiosity.

09 Nov 2021 | Ep 142: The Tremaine Fish Tank (with Nic Tiemens from Infinity Aquariums) | 01:13:51
Well this episode is a bit of a departure.
One of the strangest things about our life in Hollywood (and there are many, many strange things) is our enormous fish tank. Every time I share a little bit about our fish tank on social media, I get flooded with questions that I mostly can't answer.
So I finally recorded a conversation with someone who could! Nic Tiemens is the co-founder of Infinity Aquariums and not only does he take care of the Tremaine Tank for us every week, he has installed and maintained tanks for some of the biggest celebrities and most beautiful homes in the world.
In this episode, Nic shares how he stumbled into this line of work, why you shouldn't ever get a fish tank on a whim, and the insane new project he's been working on for two years in Bel Air.
My husband Jeff also joins us for part of the conversation, because he's the real reason we have a 1,500 gallon fish tank in our dining room.

28 Nov 2024 | Ep 247: The Perfectionist's Guide To Losing Control (a book club meeting with author Katherine Morgan Schafler) | 01:05:39
One of the books that has made the biggest impression on me in the last few years is The Perfectionist's Guide To Losing Control by Katherine Morgan Schafler. I have talked about this book EVERYWHERE and insisted that even people who do not self-identify as "perfectionists" would get something out of it.
So you can imagine that I was thrilled with the Secret Stuff members chose TPGTLC as a book club pick and I was doubly thrilled when author Katherine Morgan Schafler agreed to attend our regular monthly book club meeting to discuss it.
JOIN THE SECRET STUFF BOOK CLUB HERE
This episode is a replay of our book club discussion that was held over zoom, where Katherine and I held a great conversation about some of the major points of the book (including the five different types of "perfectionists"), and then Secret Stuff members got to ask her questions.
I loved our conversation so much that I wanted everyone to hear it (and to read the book!). If you like these types of book club meetings, consider joining the Secret Stuff Book Club for 2025. We always have the best meetings with thoughtful conversations.

30 Jun 2020 | Ep 72: Has the internet ever changed your mind? | 00:55:40
This episode is for anyone who has has been told that there's no use fighting on facebook.
Has the internet ever changed your mind on an issue? Is it easier to hear a new perspective from friends and acquaintances or from strangers?
The episode is all about the ways that people’s social media posts ARE changing our culture, through snark, humor, memes or thoughtful shared experiences.
Let’s be honest about when a post has opened our eyes or when we’ve decided to dig in our heels. I share my own thoughts on this topic, as well as a few ways (some silly, some serious) that the internet has changed my perspective. At the end of the show a few listeners chime in with their thoughts.

20 Feb 2025 | Ep 257: How To Survive on Social Media in 2025 | 01:05:09
As the headlines get harder, the politics more divisive, and the platforms themselves more corrupt, many of us are rethinking our social media usage in 2025.
Yeah, sure, we've all said this before in the past. So we take breaks, or delete the apps off our phones, but we always come crawling back. Social media is just an ingrained part of our lives now. It's where we get our news, it's how we connect with others, it's a source of entertainment and expression.
And yet...there is something different about this moment in internet history. People really are fed up, but it also seems impossible to quit cold turkey. There has to be a middle ground between spending large chunks of our day scrolling and walking away from social media completely. In this episode I'm walking through my own personal process of changing my relationship with my phone.

28 Dec 2019 | BONUS: Intentions, Affirmations, & Vision Boards, Oh my! | 00:38:33
This episode is for you if you’re thinking about setting intentions, starting affirmations, and creating a vision board for the new year.
On this episode, I’m sharing my (relatively recent) experience with setting intentions, writing down affirmations, and creating a vision board.
Let me be clear that I no expert on any of these things, but I do believe that something goes on in your consciousness when you stay open to receiving what the world has to offer (instead of closing yourself off from anything you don’t understand), and by putting in place a few practices that might positively affect your mood, spirit, and actions.

Miss Freddy is back!
Last year’s Ep 41: 10 Tips to organize your digital photos with professional photo organizer Miss Freddy was so popular that I couldn't wait to have Casey (aka Miss Freddy) back on the show for more ideas about what to do with all the photos we’re drowning in.
This time we’re focusing on family yearbooks, but Miss Freddy’s advice applies to any sort of digital photo book you want to create. She’s sharing the steps, the tools, and the mindset to create an album you’ll be so happy to have.

14 May 2019 | Ep 16: Are you a chili cooker or a pizza orderer? | 00:17:51
This episode is for you if you've ever felt stuck in your roles.
This episode and this concept is brought to you by an old boyfriend, who (I think?) made up this analogy and it contributed to the end of our relationship and also has stayed with me as a major life question and metaphor.

06 Apr 2021 | Ep 111: Behind-The-Scenes of Publishing, Launching, and Marketing a Book | 01:16:16
This episode is for anyone interested in the peek behind the curtain of the book publishing industry.
Back when writing a book was just a dream, I made a promise to myself that if I ever published, I would share the experience openly and candidly. I used to crave all the information about agents and book deals and publicity and marketing and all the things that it seemed like authors very rarely talked about.
Back on Ep 73: I wrote a book! I shared about everything I knew up to that point: getting attention from agents, shopping a book proposal, and, of course, writing and editing my first book.
Because I'm now on the other side of the book launch, this episode is a follow up to Ep 73. Here we're going to talk about mostly marketing:
Are preorder bonuses a bribe?
Is traditional publishing going the way of the dinosaur?
Who pays for the publicity?
How does getting paid to write a book work?
I'm joined for this conversation by my friend Kelly Gordon, because I knew she would be a great person to talk through this topic. Kelly is a co-host of the Sorta Awesome podcast.

Also on the show, I mention two other places I'm doing a deep dive on the publishing process:
