14 May 2024 | What Happens When You Die? (Part One): A Journey to the Other Side with Peter Panagore | 01:07:10
Is there any bigger journey we take than the journey to the other side?
Today’s guest is Peter Panagore, who is sharing the incredible story of his first (yes, first) near-death experience. In part one of this two-part series, you’ll hear the harrowing tale of how Peter froze to death and came back to life while ice climbing and why it’s important for him to continue to tell his story years later. We talk about mystical experiences and how to interpret them, why he no longer asks “why,” and share our thoughts on why perhaps we should all think a bit more about death.
No matter your beliefs, you’ll be captivated by his tale of returning from the beyond and how it’s transformed his life.
Stay tuned for part two, where we get into some more thoughtful questions and talk about his second near-death experience.

30 Apr 2024 | The World’s Most Traveled Person on the Ethics of Gamifying Travel, Best Regions in the World, and Why To Keep Traveling With Harry Mitsidis of NomadMania | 01:28:29
Harry Mitsidis is one of only three people to have visited every country in the world…TWICE!
He is also the founder of NomadMania, an online community that inspires global explorers to venture beyond the ordinary and obvious to celebrate the world’s diversity. In this community, travelers track their progress across various lists and are ranked based on their travel accomplishments.

As someone who empowers people to get out, see the world, and spend quality time off the beaten track, we also have a bigger conversation around his unique perspectives on travel and what motivates him to continue exploring the world. Of course, there are plenty of destination recommendations (like the best place to be pleasantly surprised!) and insights into filling your life with travel.
What do you think of gamifying travel? I'd love to hear your thoughts and hope you’ll share them by sending me an audio message.

How can travel serve as a path to healing and self-discovery?
Today, I’m joined by C.D. Seventeen, a techno music artist, DJ, painter, and poet, to talk about what it was like growing up in the Yunnan Province of China and how a bike-packing trip through the Scottish Highlands and the Orkney Islands helped her reclaim her power.

We also explore her book The Weight We Carry, which contains poems from her solo bike-packing journey. She shares how this transformative trip contributed to her healing, what the adventure was like, and how it continues to impact her to this day.
This story just might inspire you to, as Seventeen wrote on the back of her book, “jump on a bike, go on a journey, dive deep into the self, and let the weight of your human identity dissolve into the wind.”
Trigger Warning: This episode discusses suicide and suicidal ideation.
How has travel brought about a transformation in you? I'd love to hear your story and hope you’ll share it by sending me an audio message.

Do you want to quit your job, embark on an epic adventure, and build an online business?
After leaving his successful career as the trainer for the New Zealand Olympic swimming team, Antonio Cala went on to cycle 25,000 kilometers from California to Patagonia, live on a sailboat for three years, and ride a motorcycle 30,000 kilometers from Spain to Cape Town. Along the way, he founded Adventure Fix, the ultimate online adventure magazine packed with the top travel expeditions, wildlife encounters, and remote places from around the world.

You’ll hear about the moment when he had to decide between his dream job and a life of travel, how his values influence his choices, why cycling may be the best way to experience a country’s culture and people, and how hitching a ride on a sailboat led them to a new life path.

31 Oct 2023 | Dark Tourism and the Complexities of Dark Destinations with Professor James Treadwell | 01:19:15
There is no denying that places like Alcatraz and Auschwitz are rooted in dark history, but Disney World? A dark destination?! Today, I’m joined by Dr. James Treadwell to unravel the intricacies of dark tourism.
Dr. Treadwell is a Professor of Criminology at Staffordshire University. He is also the co-author of 50 Dark Destinations: Crime and Contemporary Tourism, which highlights travel destinations across six continents and explores the past and contemporary issues that we often disregard during our everyday leisure.
In this episode, we talk about the sensationalization of true crime, why we’re so attracted to places marked by violence, and what actually makes a destination “dark.” You’ll learn how we may all be some form of deviant tourist (whether we realize it or not) and ways to be more mindful when visiting these locations.

12 Dec 2023 | Traveling on $10 a Day to Building a 7-Figure Business with The Broke Backpacker Will Hatton | 01:13:44
Today, I’m joined by Will Hatton to hear about his adventures traveling the world on $10 a day and how that led to the creation of one of the world’s largest travel blogs, The Broke Backpacker.
Will has been traveling the world for 15 years, launching nine different businesses during that time. As a serial entrepreneur and founder of The Broke Backpacker, he’s passionate about showing that travel is possible no matter your budget, as long as you’re willing to get out of your comfort zone.
In this episode, Will talks about why his solo trip through India was so transformative in creating a life of travel, his experience hitchhiking in Pakistan and Iran (and marrying the girl he met on the road), and why extreme budget travel in far-flung lands is the ultimate tool for personal development. We talk about the realities of what it took for him to build his blog to seven figures while living a travel-based lifestyle, his most recent project opening Bali’s first custom-designed and built coworking and coliving hostel, and, of course, plenty of advice and lessons around budget travel and business.
Would you travel the world on $10 a day? I'd love to hear your thoughts and hope you’ll share them by sending me an audio message.

19 Dec 2023 | Ethical Wildlife Tourism With Kristen Diederich | 01:06:00
Encountering animals on our travels is one of the most life-changing experiences we can have, but how can we do it in a more ethical and responsible way? Kristen Diederich is with me today to talk about ethical wildlife tourism and how to be more informed when choosing our animal experiences.
Kristen is the founder of Compassionate Travels, which focuses on crafting ethical, wildlife-centric adventures for responsible, values-driven travelers. As an animal rights advocate and well-traveled adventurer, she has first-hand experience on the scale of animal suffering in the tourism industry and the challenges of finding experiences that don’t contribute to it.
Kristen and I discuss the complex issues around common experiences like elephant riding, taking photos, feeding and touching, and even cultural experiences like dog sledding. She shares the concept of “welfare washing” and why even some of the most seemingly ethical sanctuaries or rescues are still causing harm. You’ll learn how to identify truly ethical sanctuaries and tour operators and gain an understanding of the broader impact of mass tourism on animal welfare.
How have your thoughts changed on animal tourism? I’d love to hear what you took away from this episode and hope you’ll share by sending me an audio message.

30 Jul 2024 | Circling Home: Lessons From 15 Years Living Abroad With Terry Repak | 01:06:33
When Terry Repak and her husband moved to West Africa with two small children at the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 1990s, she seized the opportunity to connect with people of other cultures and bear witness to the ravages of the disease.

28 Dec 2023 | How To Add More Play Into Your Life With Jeff Harry | 01:33:51
We're pulling an episode from the archives this week! This episode was originally published in 2020.
How important has "play" been in your daily life? Jeff Harry is the king of play (and shimmies). As a coach and international speaker, he travels the world talking to major companies like Google, Amazon, and Southwest Airlines about how to tap into their true selves while embracing their happiness and fulfilling lives. We as adults spend a lot of time pretending to be important, serious grownups, but it's when we let that facade down and just play, that's when the real magic begins to happen.
Jeff and I get into how play and travel mix, the importance of unleashing our inner child for both our physical and mental health, and how play can help you find your purpose in life. I hope you walk away from this episode with permission to play more and enjoy a little more "you" time.
What was your biggest takeaway from this episode? Will you be allowing yourself more play in your day-to-day life? Let me know by sending me an audio message.

12 Oct 2023 | Silence in the Age of Noise with Legendary Explorer Erling Kagge | 01:05:43
We're pulling one of my top picks from the archive for a second episode this week!
What an incredible show today as I sit down (in person) and chat with legendary explorer and adventurer Erling Kagge.
Erling is a man of many firsts. In 1990, Erling was the first to reach the North Pole without support as part of a two-person team, and in 1992-93, he was the first to do a solo unsupported expedition to the South Pole. He spent 50 days walking alone across Antarctica without any contact with anyone. He also climbed Mt. Everest in 1994, which made him the first to complete the 3 Poles Challenge on foot. Then, in 2010, he completed a 5-day walk through the sewers of NY to the Atlantic Ocean, and in 2012, he walked the entire length of LA's Sunset Boulevard!
We talk about his book Silence: In the Age of Noise, why silence is such an essential part of our lives as humans, walking, travel (of course!), and much more.

12 Mar 2024 | Trapped at Sea: Surviving a Shipwreck, Spending 10 Years Sailing the World (Against Her Will) With Suzanne Heywood | 01:26:48
What happens when one person’s dream adventure is forced onto their family? Today’s episode is, in many ways, a cautionary tale to remind us of the importance of considering your travel companions' needs, especially when they’re children.
At seven years old, Suzanne Heywood’s father took their family on a dangerous sailing expedition, recreating Captain Cook's perilous third voyage around the world. While it was supposed to last three years, it ended up taking 10.
In her memoir Wavewalker: Breaking Free, she shares her experience of growing up at sea, being unable to receive an education, surviving a shipwreck, and eventually making it back to the UK and to university.
In this episode, Suzanne shares a captivating story of resilience. We talk about some of the traumatic experiences she faced, including the shipwreck that led to severe head injuries just six months into their voyage (with no medical care on board). We talk about why she feels she was denied a childhood and the implications of this journey on her life and family.
Have you been planning a family or group adventure? What did you take away from this conversation? I'd love to hear your thoughts and hope you’ll share them by sending me an audio message.

23 May 2023 | Travel Legend Rick Steves | 01:25:17
Traveling abroad had such an impact on Rick early on, that he chose to dedicate his life to helping others see the world.
In 1976, he launched Rick Steves’ Europe and, over time, built a travel empire along with a community of raving fans (including me!). His best-selling guidebook series, public television show, public radio show, syndicated travel column, small group tours, free resources, and other media all align with his core mission to help people get out and travel Europe.
Rick has had a huge influence on me, both personally and professionally. His recommendations helped shape some of my early trips to Europe, ultimately leading to my life of travel. Rick also showed me it was possible to craft a career around my passion for helping others travel the world.
Needless to say, he’s been a dream guest for me, and it was an absolute honor to chat with him and share this conversation with you today.

In this episode, Mike shares why he decided to prioritize adventure over college debt, how his hobbies influence his solo travel experience, why it’s important to create your own system when traveling, his advice on motorcycle touring, and more. 19 Mar 2024 | The First Disabled Person To Visit Every Country With Hayley Kennedy | 01:02:33
What would you do if you knew you were going to go blind?
At 13, Hayley developed alopecia and lost all of her hair. At 27, she was diagnosed with Stargadts disease, causing her to lose all of her central vision. On a mission to see as much of the world as possible before her sight completely deteriorates, Hayley recently became the first known disabled person to visit all 193 United Nations member states (and more).
Hayley and I have an open conversation about her story, the motivation at the heart of this quest, and the challenges she faced both at home and on the road. Many universal lessons are packed into this conversation, including insight on learning to ask for help, respecting other cultures despite your personal beliefs, traveling to dangerous countries, avoiding disappointment when visiting a new place, food for thought for those working 9-5 jobs, and much more.
What did you take away from Hayley’s story? I'd love to hear your thoughts and hope you’ll share them by sending me an audio message.

Today, I’m joined by photographer Mark Fox to talk about his experience working in Amazon Rainforest conservation and how he built a life around travel and his passions.

In this episode, Mark shares what he’s learned from working in conservation and spending time with Indigenous communities, advice on visiting these communities as an independent traveler (and having genuine experiences), and how to respectfully photograph locals on your travels. You’ll hear about his stint working at an Ayahuasca retreat and how this opened him up spiritually, daily life in Ecuador, and much more!
How can you build a life around your passions and travel? Are you already on that path? I'd love to hear your thoughts and hope you’ll share them by sending me an audio message.
