What's it like to have JUST finished Yoga Teacher Training? On today's episode we'll talk about exactly that. I interviewed Allison Halley - who I have worked with 1-1 for several months - just days after she finished her first Teacher Training, She actually didn't take my training, and we'll discuss why. Many of the advanced poses will come as a side effect of regular practice. Many of the day-to-day benefits of feeling less stressed and reactive will come as a side effect of regular practice. If we chase these goals directly it will likely lead to frustration and injury. Instead, we can focus on making it easy to have a consistent practice. Here are 5 things I've found to be helpful:

20 Aug 2019 | 6: What Was The First Written Use of The Word Yoga? | 00:26:24
In modern discussion of yoga there is a lot of conflict about what is or isn't yoga. Now we have so many permutations, and so many people claiming their yoga is more authentic, who should we listen to? In this podcast I will go all the way back to the oldest written mention of the word yoga to explore it's definition and practice and how that applies to our modern, westernized approaches to yoga. I'll dive into one of my favorite sources of yogic wisdom, the Upanishads. A treasure trove of incredible teachings that are as relevant now as they were 2000+ years ago. Two of my favorite translation / commentaries on the Upanishads are this one by Eknath Eswaren and this one by Thomas Egenes. Both worth having in your library to review for years to come. I also mentioned a great documentary you can check out HERE that shows what practices that modern yogis are doing that were also practiced by the yogis of 2000+ years ago If you like learning yoga from the roots up then you will love the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training. Doors open 9/9 and you can join the waiting list here. Can't make it this time? Next class will be in the Spring. Enjoying this podcast? Thanks for listening!

19 Apr 2022 | 80: Why Your Yoga Business Is Struggling To Survive | 00:15:50
Signup for the FREE workshop: Thrive Teaching Online at thriveteachingonline.com/workshop In 2016, after 5 years of yoga certifications, I realized something was missing. I had a ton of personal and spiritual growth, but almost no material or financial growth. I moved around Austin from one guest room to another until I found a place I wanted to live with awesome roommates. When I asked how much it cost to live there I said "oh wow, nevermind, I wont be able to afford that." The cost was $500 a month. With all bills and food included. I started to question the path I was on. How could I serve my students if I can't even pay my bills? So instead of taking another yoga training, I took a business training. For six years I studied with some of the best marketing, sales and business teachers in the world. This was not separate from my spiritual path at all. It was the best thing I could have done for my personal growth. The teachers I resonated with most lived yogic principles like ahimsa and aparigraha. They also happened to be the most successful ones. Since then, I've become more confident, focused, and more myself than ever before. As a reflection of my internal growth, my business has seen massive growth too. After 350k+ podcast downloads and creating a six figure business doing only work I love, I want to give back. If you want to grow your yoga business and see similar results, then I created something you'll love. It's a free workshop called Thrive Teaching Online on Tuesday April 26th at 2pm CST. I'm opening this workshop to the public, and offering 1-1 mentoring to a few dedicated teachers. This is for you if you want to increase your income, grow your audience and transition to only doing work you love. My goal is to help you achieve those results and save years of trial, error, overwhelm and frustration. 12 Feb 2025 | 117: Yoga Beyond Asana: Chakras, Koshas, Kundalini & The Subtle Body | 00:49:11
We all know yoga isn’t just about physical poses—it’s about working with energy, too. Beyond just putting the body into shapes, we’re working with pranayama, meditation, and powerful maps of consciousness like the chakras, nadis, koshas, and kundalini energy. In this episode, I’ll dive into these subtle layers of yoga, sharing insights from my years of practice and teaching, as well as what I teach in the Quietmind Yoga Membership and the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training. Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, you’ll learn how to work with these energies in practical ways. I’ll break down how to recognize when a chakra is balanced, excessive, or deficient, and how to use yoga practices to restore harmony. I’ll also share how energy moves from subtle to gross, why it’s so important to address imbalances before they manifest physically, and simple tools like pranayama and grounding poses to regulate your energy. If you’ve ever wondered how to go beyond the physical and truly tap into the deeper layers of yoga, this episode is for you. -- Practice with me in the Quietmind Yoga Membership athttps://www.quietmind.yoga Enroll in the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training athttps://www.quietmind.yoga/ytt Follow on Instagram@quietmind.yoga FollowQuietmind Astrology Podcast for free weekly horoscopes in Vedic Astrology (the sister science of yoga) Follow @quietmindastrology on IG for more Keywords: alignment, astrology, birth chart, astrology reading, Vedic astrology, life purpose, self-discovery, authenticity, spiritual growth, mindfulness, inner peace, Quietmind Astrology, podcast episode, values alignment, personal transformation, life changes, cosmic insights, planetary influences
18 Jun 2020 | How Practicing Contentment (Santosha) Helped Me Work Through Depression | 00:18:27
This practice changed my life. Around 12 years ago I was struggling with depression and feeling stuck on how to navigate it. I knew something needed to change so when I heard about a practice that could possibly help, I was eager to try it. The practice, I know now, shares its roots with this ancient teaching of Yoga Philosophy. What is the practice? I will share in this podcast, as well as how you can start applying it today. The Yoga Sutra teaches "From contentment comes all happiness." The Sanskrit word for this is "Santosha" which comes from "Sam" and "tosha" meaning "completely all together." -- When we are 'completely all together' we feel contentment. Is contentment just complacency though? What if you feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious and think seeking contentment is unrealistic? What creates discontent? This episode is quite personal to my own growth. I look forward to sharing the lessons I've learned about contentment with you today. 14 Aug 2019 | 5: Which phase are you in? | 00:41:07
Since I began teaching in 2011 I have noticed there is a pattern to how I have learned over the years. Once I noticed this pattern I asked other experienced teachers if they noticed it too. They did! I began applying it to how I learned going forward and it has helepd my practice stay interesting, engaging and evolving every year since. PHASE 1: Study the Fundamentals: You've likely heard "you don't know what you don't know." This is where you start. With a beginners mind, curious and open to new possibiliteis. Maybe you feel this way about anatomy, asana or breathwork. This is the time to find a mentor, learn the mindset, and see the big picture. Explore for a while, then decide where to dig deeper in phase 2, PHASE 2: Deepen Your Practice: Now that you have the basics down, you start thinking "Ok, i get it," but only intellectually. it takes lots of practice and repittion to myelinate your brain and build mind-muscle connection. In this phase you start having realizations, new perspectives. Satchidananda said "stop digging shallow wells, you have to dig deep to reach water." That is phase 2. 29 Apr 2020 | Asteya: The Subtle Ways We Give and Take | 00:24:01
Asteya means non-stealing. A few years ago I became aware of a subtle, unintentional way that I was taking from others. My intention was to be “helpful” and demonstrate care, so I was bewildered when a coach pointed out that my attempts to be caring were actually taking more than I was giving. This took me a while to fully grasp, and it is a common, well intended behavior in helping professions. I’ll share about that experience and how it taught me the value of Asteya in today’s episode. 04 Jul 2020 | Tapas: 10 Yogic Practices To Build Discipline & Willpower | 00:23:21
Watch the free workshop 6 Steps To Turn Your Idea Into An Online Yoga Business In The Next 90 Days at http://www.quietmind.yoga/6steps How do you build willpower, discipline and patience? This is one of the core teachings of yoga philosophy: Tapas. Tapas means all of those things plus intensity, passion and focus. We see it in the ascetic yogis who devote their lives to tapas practices like keeping one arm up in the air for their whole life. This is still happening in India to this day. Yogis who practice tapas teach us that we are capable of much more than the mind would let on. They can inspire us to challenge ourselves and grow. This follows the Niyama of contentment because it's important to embody both contentment and tapas. Stirha and sukha. Effort and ease. In today's episode I will share 10 yogic ways you can apply tapas to your life to increase your own willpower and discipline. It's so fascinating and validates a lot of the ancient yoga philosophy with modern science about how the universe works. We know that everything in the universe (including us) is made up of atoms, but what are atoms made of? These are called subatomic particles, but the interesting thing is they only appear as particles (forms) when we observe them, otherwise they behave more like waves (potential energy). This is the like the relationship of parusha (spirit) and prakriti (form) in yoga philosophy. We are literally creating our reality based on what we put our attention on! This is why I say your intention is so important. Your intention determines your attention, and what you put your attention creates your feelings, your actions, your results and everything else in your life. More than time, money and energy, I believe your attention is your most valuable asset, because it is what leads to creating all three of those things, and everything else in our lives. This is why I started the free Deepen Your Yoga Practice series with setting an intention for the training. You can join the free training here. In this new episode of the Yoga Teacher Training podcast I share about all of the above and the fascinating ways quantum physics applies in yoga and in life. Enjoy! 11 Jul 2021 | 62: Use The Poses To Get Into Your Body, Rather Than Using Your Body To Get Into The Poses | 00:21:50
Why do you practice postures? Today and over the next 3 episodes let's explore what it really is that we are doing when we do yoga. Is it to reach a goal of flexibility? Is it to be present in the body? Is it to tune out from life for an hour in a day? What if all perspectives can be valid and appropriate and the real aim is to develop your inner authority that knows which perspective is in alignment for you? I'll share insights from all the way back at my very first yoga class and how that continues to shape my practice and perspective today, as well as thoughts from my mentors, historical teachers, the source texts of yoga and modern science. The Quietmind Membership opens for one week only next week! http://www.quietmind.yoga/membership to join the waiting list. Today I share a major topic Im teaching inside the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training. At the core of yoga philosophy is Samkhya philosophy -- a lesser known and far less practiced philosophy that includes an understanding of creation based on 2 qualities: parusha and prakriti (something and nothing), similar to yin and yang, stirha and sukha and other pairs of opposites. From them comes the 3 gunas: sattva, rajas and tamas which I will share about today. Learning these three qualities completely changed my approach to life and practice. Everything can be understood through these three qualities, making it an essential part of yoga philosophy. Excited to share all about it with you on today's episode!. Weekly live classes and weekly mini workshops to develop deliberate skills in your practice such as nervous system regulation, strengthening Agni. Over the next few weeks I’ll be adding bonus classes with practices to embody the 8 limbs of yoga as we learn more in this series. Today continues our series on applying the 8 limbs of yoga to teaching yoga. Each week I will cover a new aspect of the 8 limbs. This week I’ll share how you can apply the first Yama: Ahimsa to teaching. It may seem obvious that you are not harming your students in class, but there is an unavoidable power dynamic at play in yoga classes that has been a source of harm to countless students who have shared their stories in recent years. I will share ways I have found to both hold the seat of the teacher, while guiding students back to their inner authority. The points I will discuss are:
"Non-killing being established, in his presence all emnities cease (in others). “Ahimsa is not mere negative non-injury. It is positive, cosmic love. It is the development of a mental attitude in which hatred is replaced by love. Ahimsa is true sacrifice. Ahimsa is forgiveness. Ahimsa is Sakti (power). Ahimsa is true strength.” - Sivananda “Ahimsa is the highest duty. Even if we cannot practice it in full, we must try to understand its spirit and refrain as far as is humanly possible from violence.” - Mahatma Gandhi “Strictly speaking, no activity and no industry is possible without a certain amount of violence, no matter how little. Even the very process of living is impossible without a certain amount of violence. What we have to do is to minimize it to the greatest extent possible.” - Mahatma Gandhi “The power of unarmed nonviolence is any day far superior to that of armed force.” - Mahatma Gandhi “Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.” - Thomas A. Edison

Saucha means cleanliness and it’s the first of 5 niyamas (disciplines) - things we aim to do to achieve the 8 limbs of yoga. Recent research in quantum physics has fascinating implications for how our minds shape our environments and vice versa. Practicing saucha means being mindful of the ‘cleanliness’ of your mind just as much as the cleanliness of your body. To perceive more clearly rather than through samskaras (patterns) or kleshas (afflictions of the mind). Today I’ll share about

19 Jan 2022 | 76: The Most Important Thing To Focus On When Teaching | 00:33:44
As teachers it can be overwhelming to know what to focus on. There are so many amazing aspects to yoga from the anatomy to philosophy to cueing that it can be easy to want to include it ALL in every class. Unfortunately, if you try to say everything in a class, you end up saying nothing. And if you never know what to focus on when teaching your classes and your own energy will become scattered, unfocused and you'll eventually get burned out and discouraged from teaching. You might even just decide to quit teaching all together. So what do you focus on instead? It's simpler and more obvious than you might think, but I've been to plenty of classes where the teacher forgets to do this, and you may have too. It's an easy mistake to make, but it's also a simple mistake to avoid. I'll share how in today's episode! 14 Mar 2020 | 20: How to Start Teaching Online Today With No Experience and Little To No Costs | 00:15:08
As my teacher Libby would say "now, all previous teachings apply." This is an uncertain, disruptive time for us all over the world, and I hope you and your loved ones are well and staying safe. Many people are experiencing major losses and challenges with the spread of covid-19 and if you are not directly effected this an opportunity for you to apply all you have learned about yoga to be a loving presence for others and 'teach yoga' by how you show up for them. For those of you teaching in studios and in person - which is nearly all yoga teachers - you may be experiencing major transitions in your work. Studios are limiting class sizes and eliminating props. Corporate clients are now working remotely. How can you best navigate this in a traditionally in-person, service based industry? One thing I have done over the years is teach over video chat, and I am grateful to have that experience as I have been able to seamlessly transition into working with many of my clients this way. In today's episode I share how you can do the same TODAY with no prior experience and little to no costs. You just need 6 things to get started. Listen for more details.

Get the free guide of essential cues at http://www.quietmind.yoga/cues Modern life pulls our energy in a million directions. Overwhelm, burn out, feeling distracted and scattered are normal side effects of living our modern fast paced, mostly online lives. I believe yoga and particularly asana practice has become so popular in recent years not because of the common perception that people are focused on their outward appearance, but because asana is an invitation away from the noise into the clear, calm center underneath all the noise. In this episode I share a personal experience of realizing just how ungrounded I was and just how much asana could be the thing to help get me back 'down to earth' and grounded. I'll share three things that asana provides that is unlike nearly any other physical movement or practice and why it can be the perfect remedy to our modern lifestyles. I'll share about integrating the ancient source texts of yoga with modern neuroscience and understanding of trauma informed embodiment practices. This helps make asana far more than just a performance of flexibility, but an opportunity to be centered and embodied moment to moment. 08 Aug 2019 | 4: A New Approach to Teaching Yoga | 00:37:25
While creating my online Teacher Training I realized there is a need to have a clear structure and framework for how we approach practice. This could be taking classes that interest you and learning pieces as you go. This could be studying a specific lineage and form of yoga. Both approaches have their pros and cons. I wanted you to have a way to assess your practice - regardless of the style you practice or how long you've been practicing. An assessment that is relevant to you at any level of experience, for as long as you practice. To create a clear structure, I wrote out everything that goes into yoga - from the postures, to anatomy, to breathwork and anything else you could think of. I combined similar topics and distilled it all down into as few categories as possible. The end result is a way to asses your practice I call the '10 Core Competencies of Teaching Yoga.' In today's episode I share how this approach fits in with Samkhya philosophy - the origins of yoga. I also share what the 10 areas are and how you can assess yourself in these areas. Lastly, I share how you can continue to deepen your practice. Take the free self assessment at http://www.quietmind.yoga/core10

20 Aug 2023 | 101: Yoga Therapist Kristine Weber Responds to Dr. Andrew Huberman | 00:39:15
Kristine Weber, MA, C-IAYT, eRYT500 is a leading world authority on the neuroscientific benefits of slow, mindful movement and an advocate for the use of these practices as a solution to the healthcare crisis. She is leading the charge to get slow, mindful practices to people who desperately need them through her Subtle® Yoga Revolution series of online courses and trainings for yoga teachers – which have been praised by thousands all over the world. She recently wrote a great article in response to Dr Andrew Huberman and his Huberman Labs podcast. I invited her on to chat about it. Here's how her blog starts: “Dr. Huberman I’d love to talk to you about this [breathing] as a yoga therapist and armchair neuroscience geek who has spent more than a decade curating the research. I love your work and I realize scientific inquiry is by its very nature reductive. But you have taken an intricate and sophisticated ancient system that confers self-regulation – ethics + asana + pranayama + meditation – and reduced it to “box breathing” here. This is deeply problematic for a number of reasons. Self-regulation via yoga practices is basically achieved in four steps..." Read her blog here: https://subtleyoga.com/dear-dr-huberman/ We discuss this in depth in this episode. 7:30 Jeremy and Kristine discussed the reductive default of defining yoga as solely physical postures (asana) and emphasized the importance of incorporating the ethical principles (yamas and niyamas) of yoga for self-regulation and moral cognition. They expressed interest in exploring the intersection of neuroscience and these ethical concepts in future conversations 16:08 Jeremy and Kristine discussed the importance of practicing the principles of yoga in a progressive manner, even though they don't have to be followed strictly in order. They also touched on the benefits of memorizing and teaching the yamas and niyamas, as well as the potential energetic and physiological effects of yoga postures beyond just stretching and strengthening. 26:30 Kristine and Jeremy discussed the emerging scientific understanding of the biofield and its connection to the subtle body in yoga. They explored research on the morphogenic field, physical correlates of the chakras, and the potential for deeper understanding of the mind-body connection through studying the biofield. 35:18 Kristine and Jeremy discuss the potential intersection of science, quantum physics, and the biofield in relation to yoga and meditation. They emphasize the importance of respecting the rich tradition of yoga and its vastness, while cautioning against oversimplifying practices like pranayama. 43:18 Jeremy and Kristine discussed the importance of understanding that not every breathing practice is suitable for everyone, as our breath is influenced by our personal history and survival patterns. They also emphasized the need for repetition over time to bring about lasting changes in traits and the importance of exploring and studying Pranayama for a deeper understanding of breathwork. 04 May 2021 | 58: Why Cueing Is The Most Important Skill of Teaching | 00:17:13
Join the Cue With Confidence course at http://www.quietmind.yoga/cuewithconfidence Nearly all yoga teaching is happening online right now. Teaching online creates a lot of unique challenges: Cueing is the most important skill for yoga teachers to develop, especially if you're teaching online, and this workshop will address all of these needs. With these skills you can build a thriving online yoga community and livelihood. In the book "The One Thing" they ask the question "What's the One Thing I can do / such that by doing it / everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" - in teaching yoga I believe the one thing you can focus on that makes everything significantly better is cueing. A new student coming to your class can know within minutes wether you they would come back or not. They know because of your cues. An experienced student will keep coming back because your cues add insight and depth to their practice. As a teacher, nearly every word you say from the beginning to the end of class is a cue that is either clear or unclear. Clarifying or confusing. So how do we define what a cue is? Have you noticed there are different types of cues? What are some examples of effective vs ineffective cues? I'll share in today's episode. 22 Apr 2021 | 56: 6 Cueing Mistakes That New Teachers Make | 00:22:25
What you say matters. Especailly as a yoga teacher, every word counts. Sometimes just the smallest variation of how you say something can completely change your student’s experience of what you said. A phrase that you feel is helpful could come accross as unclear, confusing or potentially even triggering of past trauma. Sometimes we say too much or too little. With experience and practice we can learn to say just the right thing at just the right time. Today I’ll share some of the most common mistakes that new teachers make, including:
I’ll share my suggestions of what to do instead on the next episode. For now, take some time to just sit with these topics and notice them in classes you teach and attend. What makes a YTT stand out? Why would you pick one over another? With 17+ years in wellness I have learned what makes an exceptional Teacher Training and that is why I initially created the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training in 2019. Today I share some of my absolute favorite and most essential insights from the whole 200 hour program - from anatomy, to philosophy to ayurveda to trauma informed teaching and everything in between. I cover a lot of ground and share how I weave it into classes and why it is so essential that we as teachers include all of these core competencies in our teachers so we can best serve each student we work with. I share about my lineage of teachers from Krishnamacharya to the source texts of 1750s BCE to modern exercise science and kinesiology. It all weaves together in the beautiful space of practicing yoga and meditation. I share a quote from a QYTT Grad Patricia about why there can never be “too many yoga teachers” and why there has never been a better time to become a teacher than right now. I also touch on the business of teaching as I've learned from the lead sales training for Tony Robbins and other great teachers outside of the yoga realm. The QYTT starts next week! 20 Jun 2023 | 99: Todd Norian on Tantra Yoga and Spiritual Awakening | 01:05:59
Todd Norian is an international yoga teacher with 40+ years of experience. By steadfastly following his heart, Todd has lived an uncommon life: living like a monk for 13 years at the then-ashram Kripalu in Massachusetts; having an intense spiritual awakening that landed him for a brief stay in a psychiatric hospital; and overcoming the heartbreak of being spiritually betrayed by beloved teachers -- not once, but twice. We talk about the symbolism and philosphy of Tantra yoga and how to apply these powerful teachings to your life. Here are some of the topics we covered: - The deep symbolism of the Shiva Naturaja dance and those dancing Shiva statues we see so commonly in yoga and spiritual communities - The renunciate path and how it differs from the non-dual Shiva Shakta Tantra path. - The differences between classical yoga and Tantra, - How Tantra teaches to embrace life and see nature as an extension of spirit. - The paradox of non-duality and duality in the Advaita and Tantra traditions. - Todd shares about his spiritual awakening while living at an ashram. - Todd shares what it was like to experience scandal and betrayal, leading him to develop his own form of yoga that integrates body, mind, and heart. - - The importance of recognizing limitations as a path to liberation - The role of desire in Tantra, and how to discover what the heart most deeply desires. - How to integrate both the light and dark aspects of life through spiritual practice. 15 May 2021 | 59: 9 Types Of Cues To Include In Every Class | 00:20:45
Join the Cue With Confidence course at http://www.quietmind.yoga/cuewithconfidence A little challenge I’ve had for myself over the years is to figure how to say as much as possible about a pose in as few words as possible - while also speaking to all levels of students and giving them options so the class feels personalized - while also integrating anatomy and philosophy lessons that are relevant - while giving lots of space for the student to have their own experience and listen to their body’s needs. There are infinite ways to cue a pose and I encourage you to find your own and I’ve found dozens of cues and really efficient phrases that do all of the above - distilling 10 years of trial and error as a teacher into 2 1/2 hr workshop I’m teaching in the Cue With Confidence Workshop. Today I’ll share how to frame this through 9 types of cues that great teachers include in every class. This is not something that is traditionally taught in teacher trainings, but something I have observered from 12 years of practice and 10 years of teaching. Listen in to hear about these cues and how they can significantly improve the quality of your classes and the experience of your students! We all know to cue with the breath. Inhale, do x. Exhale, do y. This is a great foundation but there are 8 other types of cues that you can easily include in every class to give students a much more well-rounded experience while integrating all aspects of yoga beyond just the poses. I'll teach you when, why and how to include all 9 types of cues, no matter what style of yoga you teach. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/quietmind.yoga Thanks for listening! 25 Oct 2022 | 88: Instead of ‘How' To Do Poses, Consider This | 00:21:27
The Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training Mentorship & Certification is OPEN for a limited time now! Learn more and enroll at quietmind.yoga/ytt On the surface yoga is all about "how" to do things. Place your foot here, reach your arm there. Do this or that. This is all on the surface, the anamaya kosha, the physical body. What's really interesting about yoga is not just the how, but the when, where and why of the poses. Everything in yoga has an energetic effect, and real mastery of yoga practice is not just about knowing 'how' to do poses, but when, where and why. What are the effects of this pose and how does it relate to others. This is something we explore in the free Deepen Your Practice series, still available for a limited time with two bonus live sessions coming this week! Learn 10 Core Competencies with lots of 1-1 support from me in the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training. Learn more at https://www.quietmind.yoga/ytt In this episode of the Yoga Teacher Training Podcast, I’m sharing the five most common causes of yoga injuries—and how you can avoid them. Yoga is about feeling good, strong, flexible, and balanced—not dealing with tweaks or strains that could’ve been prevented. I’ll talk about real-life examples, like the mistake I’ve made (and learned from) of demoing poses without warming up first, the risks of jumping from one extreme range of motion to another, and why listening to your body is the most important skill you can develop. You’ll also hear my thoughts on why yoga isn’t about pushing to your limit or performing—it’s about creating a practice that supports you today, tomorrow, and for years to come. If you’re ready to take your practice deeper or teach yoga in a way that supports your students’ growth and safety, join the waitlist for my Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training at quietmind.yoga/ytt.
