21 Nov 2024Marjorie Liu: Mesmero Thinks He's a Pin Up Model - Uncanny X-Men 11100:56:35

Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future.

Comics legend Marjorie Liu joins our host Lodro Rinzler to discuss an incredibly fun and disturbing issue of X-Men!

Before we sell you on all the hilarity, let's get real for a moment: Marjorie Liu is not just an extraordinary comic writer, she's also just a lovely, grounded, kind human being. It was an honor to have her on the show. Okay, now on to the silliness.

In this episode we discuss how Marjorie writes from the gut and, in her words, her gut is really weird. Also, how she went through a cathartic experience writing X-23 (now Wolverine).

Topics include:

  • teenage Marjorie wrote X-Men fanfic

  • in the Marvel Universe, a hat and trenchcoat is more than sufficient to disguise a six foot, blue, furry man

  • Charles Xavier sends postcards from space

  • Mesmero is a bag of dicks

  • Also Mesmero read a Playboy once and thinks that's how people should always pose

  • the Phoenix force has limits on how badly you can mess up Jean Grey

At the end we answer questions from YOU! Yes, you! Then Marjorie Liu spits wisdom on how to be yourself even and especially when others are trying to tell you who you should become and how to transmute hatred and negativity into gold. This episode is not to be missed!

Marjorie Liu is an attorney and New York Times bestselling novelist and comic book writer. Her work at Marvel includes X-23, Black Widow, Han Solo, Dark Wolverine and Astonishing X-Men. She is also the co-creator of Monstress from Image Comics, which has won multiple Hugo Awards, British Fantasy Awards, the Harvey Award, and five Eisner Awards, making Liu the first-ever woman (and woman of color) to win an Eisner in the Best Writer category. She teaches comic book writing at MIT.

Marjorie’s extensive work with Marvel includes the Dark Wolverine series, NYX:  No Way Home, X-23, and Black Widow: The Name of the Rose. She received national media attention for Astonishing X-Men, which featured the gay wedding of X-Man Northstar and was subsequently nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for outstanding media images of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. You can find more of Marjorie over at her website.

06 Mar 2025Kissi Frost: Gambit is a Precious Lad - Uncanny X-Men 31200:54:55

Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future.

On this week's episode we are joined by the incredibly charming and kind cosplayer Kissi Frost to cover the PHALANX. We're getting techno-organic y'all!

First off, Uncanny X-Men 312 (their birth month and year issue) is entitled ROMP and the Phalanx are not a romp but we have a great time with it. In this episode:

  • if you’re gonna date an X-Man you have to accept polyamory to a certain degree

  • Lodro thought ninja sais would be more readily available as an adult (again)

  • it's hard to understand comic injuries...but rain clouds make them prettier

  • the Phalanx are truly scary as a villain

  • Gambit loves to throw motorcycles at people

  • an impassioned defense of the X-Men: Apocalypse movie

  • Magneto has a good cape

What does any of this mean for Kissi's future? Tune in to find out!

Kissi Frost is an artist, actor, and a lifelong nerd. Having cosplayed since they were fourteen years old, and using Spiderman comics to help practice their English, they've been a comic fanatic for as long as they can remember. Currently, they work as a freelance concept artist, as well as an actor (mainly in the horror scene.) Their favorite comics and cosplays are, of course, the X-Men, with Mystique being their favorite character to portray. They only throw blue babies over waterfalls on weekends, pinky promise.

Mikey G of the x-cellent Instagram account XTropes joins our host Lodro Rinzler for an episode devoted inadvertently to how great the character Lifeguard is.

Still interested? Well we do cover an amazing crossover: X-Men and Alpha Flight 1, where Madelyne Pryor gets super powers!

Also in this episode:

  • Rachel is a future daughter from a future timeline who is from the future...and only wears a black leotard and bright red leg warmers into battle

  • Justice for Slipstream, the White Surfer

  • Is Alpha Flight good?

  • When you get attacked the best way to practice self-defense is to kiss them

  • Northstar is gay and Rogue speaks French

  • Sasquatch is having trouble being a Sasquatch and gets cured of Sasquatch stuff

Plus Mikey has a bird phobia. What does any of this mean for his future? Tune in to find out!

Mikey hails from Sydney, Australia. Although he did not grow up there. He grew up on the west coast of Australia in Perth which is the most isolated city in the world hence the harsh accent. Besides his one true love, the X-Men, he enjoys shaking his fist at clouds, horror movies and all things housewives. He is the number one fan of the greatest Claremont creation of all time: Lifeguard. Which makes him crazy.

12 Dec 2024Cassie Lilly: It's Really Fun Being Queer - Uncanny X-Men 5700:45:44

Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future.

Returning guest Cassie Lilly comes home to X-Men Horoscopes for an episode where we map X-Men 57 onto its historical counterpart in 1969...we're covering the Stonewall Riots!

Yes - this is another "What does X-Men say about US?" episode, or at least the queer and queer-adjacent us. With that in mind, we also cover:

  • why Iceman is Cleopatra

  • the Sentinels...LIVE (for Polaris' outfit)

  • Havok is a walking talking disaster and Lorna Dane, half a world away, falls in love

  • Havok has to come out as a mutant and wonders if anyone has ever felt so alone

  • Lodro manages the X-Men's finances

  • "Men believe what they want to believe Bobby"

Tune in because this episode...is going to be a riot!

Jokes aside, this is when mutants in the Marvel Universe are starting to be persecuted and hunted simply for being mutants. We're witnessing the birth of mutant as metaphor in today's issue and it's message is a powerful one about how, when we stand together, we prevail. When we isolate, well, that's when the Sentinels will get ya.

Bonus: we have a back up story called "The Female of the Species" which...is not great for feminism. "Cleaning the house is a breeze when you have telekinesis!" - Jean Grey ten years before becoming a cosmic entity

Cassie Lilly is a truly creative person, having trained as an actress, most notably at the celebrated National Youth Theatre of London, who has also successfully dabbled in modeling and voiceover work before settling into her skills as a writer, with her first article published in 2021 detailing her perspective as a transgender girl in the modern world.

She is an activist at heart, a champion for LGBTQ rights and the fight against racism, lending her voice as an educational public speaker, shedding light on the history and facts surrounding the culture war on trans people. As an avid comic book reader from an early age, Cassie is considered a “go-to” girl when it comes to comics. This lends perfectly to her super fun content coverage as a bubbly Tiktoker and across social media, diving into nerd culture, comic book characters, history and lore! You can join the discussion with @who.cassie across all social media!

12 Sep 2024Erica Schultz: The Alien Captain America - Uncanny X-Men 10501:07:59

Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future.

Erica Schultz, comic writer extraordinaire, joins our host Lodro Rinzler for the Season 2 finale of X-Men Horoscopes!

We dive into the classic X-Men issue 105 where Jean finally figures out she's a giant cosmic bird. Eric the Red (FML that I have to explain Eric the Red) has manipulated the former herald of Galactus Firelord - basically if a matchstick took the form of a person - into taking out the X-Men and only Jean can sort of stop them!

We also get a sneak peek at Erica's new series: Laura Kinney the Wolverine, hitting stands this December.

Also in this episode:

  • Who is the alien Captain America?

  • What cause will Erica flip her own desk over to defend?

  • Why the new Wolverine series has an all-female creative team

  • Firelord is just a giant matchstick who won't stop talking about the last job he was fired from

  • Eric the Red is the reason Lodro drinks

  • Erica yells at Lodro about his categorization of New York City neighborhoods

  • Jean has the most expensive apartment in NYC and now her security deposit is gone

  • Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum fight on panel

  • Cyclops sees Jean's new power and is torn between "this is sexy" and "I'm terrified" and has lived there ever since

  • Misty Knight gets a bad break in the roommate department

This and much more in the finale of Season 2 for X-Men Horoscopes! We will be back in a few weeks with a power-packed Season 3 and, as always, thanks for listening!

Erica Schultz is a Ringo Award nominated comic book writer (and editor and instructor and letterer). Right in time for the movies, Deadpool co-creator + writing legend Fabian Nicieza joins our host Lodro Rinzler for Count Nefaria stealing Washington D.C. He would have gotten away with it too if not for those pesky telepaths. Born in Argentina, Fabian grew up on (and learned English from) X-Men comics so we dive into issue 23, syncing with his arrival in the good old U.S. of A.

Count Nefaria has kidnapped the X-Men and is holding Washington D.C. hostage for seventy trazilliom dollars. Also in this episode:

Fabian Nicieza has worked for Marvel since 1985 when he started out in the department for Fisher-Price licensed activity books. He moved on to become Marvel’s Advertising Manager and then during that time, Fabian also began writing for Marvel on a freelance basis. His first published book was PSI-FORCE #9 in 1987. He then went on to write THE NEW WARRIORS which was simply wonderful.

Clearly a glutton for punishment, Fabian also began writing several of Marvel’s top-selling X-titles, including X-FORCE, CABLE, DEADPOOL and the company’s #1 selling book, X-MEN. These books not only sold millions of copies to gazillions of readers, Fabian also got to star in a series of X-Men Pizza Hut videos.

And outside of comics, Fabian has worked with STARLIGHT RUNNER ENTERTAINMENT for 20 years on story world development and franchise management consultation for some of the biggest entertainment companies on some of the biggest properties.

He has written two novels including SUBURBAN DICKS which was nominated by the Mystery Writers of America for an Edgar Award.

His NEW comic Free Agents is out NOW! You should go pick it up it's a lot of fun.

Marina Acosta is a full scope primary care nurse practitioner, specializing in polycystic ovarian syndrome and ADHD.  Separately, she is a New Orleans Voodoo practitioner, focused on honoring traditional rituals, ingredients, and recipes.  She is a mom, a wife and a collector of stationary. 07 Aug 2024Kieron Gillen: The X-Office is an Anarchist Commune - X-Men 94 + 9501:08:22

Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future.

This week legendary X-Writer Kieron Gillen joins our host Lodro Rinzler for a very special episode entitled "The X-Office is an Anarchist Commune." We discuss, not surprisingly, what it was like behind the scenes during the recent Krakoa era, the Fall of X, and how Xavier was right (?). Kieron was born right as Thunderbird died so we dive into the epic story told in X-Men 94 + 95.

Also in this episode:

Kieron has emotional contraceptives for that

  • the overlap between Hickman and Gillen writing styles

  • the X-Men are forged into...the Breakfast Club

  • the death and rebirth of Thunderbird

  • how Count Nefaria is somehow the primary x-villain this season on the show

In the Q&A section we cover who the DJ was on Krakoa, how Selene loves to eat people and what the X-Men would be like as a sitcom.

Also: Power Fantasy, Kieron's BRAND NEW comic, is out...TODAY! Go get it! Like, today today!

Kieron Gillen first came to attention as a comic creator with his 2006’s Phonogram, with Jamie McKelvie. Jamie and he formed into a gestalt monster that rampaged against the next fifteen years of comics, culminating with critical and smash hit the Wicked + the Divine. When not with Jamie, he has co-created books such as DIE, The Ludocrats, Once & Future, Three, Uber and more. When not making his own worlds, he has worked on Marvel Comics biggest books, such as Uncanny X-Men, Young Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Star Wars, Eternals and Darth Vader, (where he co-created Doctor Aphra). You can follow along with Kieron's work by buying Power Fantasy TODAY(!) and signing up for his newsletter here.

Right in time for Halloween Homo Superior co-host Adam Kousarri-Amin joins our host for The Most Depressing After School Special EVER! The Power Pack kids get abducted by the Morlocks and the X-Men have to remember the Morlocks exist and save them.

That's right! How to top last week's episode where the Morlocks kidnap an adult? With another episode where they kidnap children! Everyone needs a hobby and this is the Morlocks' so please stop judging them.

We review Uncanny X-Men 195 and other important topics covered include:

  • How watching X-Men 97 was like watching Drag Race...but for X-Men

  • Why mourning X-Men 97 is like losing a foreign lover

  • Lodro has a Star Wars name

  • Wolverine loves to smoke cigars and stab little girls...and he’s all out of cigars

  • Power Pack loves to hang out in sewers

  • We all know why Manson removed one of his own ribs right?

  • Kitty can be in charge and if Wolverine has to kill a couple Morlocks as a result of her bad leadership it's not the end of the world

  • The many teams of baby soldiers Xavier made us forget

  • If you live in a sewer why are you going to dress your kid in a tube top?

Cro Magnons are going to HATE this episode but everyone should give it a listen anyway.

Adam Koussari-Amin is co-host of the weekly podcast, Homo Superior, which provides smart analysis and dumb jokes about the latest and greatest of X-Men and MCU content. When he’s not running his mouth, you can catch him DJing around Washington, DC, or cuddling on the couch with his partner and his dog watching horror movies and playing video games. The excellent meme-game discussed in this episode can be found here.

19 Dec 2024Matt Bonaccorso: Dracula and the Puffy Shirt from Seinfeld - Uncanny X-Men 15901:03:21

Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future.

Long time friend of our host Matthew Bonaccorso joins us to talk DRACULA!

The X-Men have fought aliens, had friends turn into giant space birds and live in a world where telepaths are on every block but balk at the possibility that Storm could possibly be hanging out with a vampire. But guess what? She got turnt!

Yes, Matt's birthday corresponds to Storm falling under the sway of Dracula himself.

Also in this issue:

  • most of our listeners have probably imagined Wolverine in their bedroom

  • if you were going to send one trade paperback to convince someone to like the X-Men, what it would it be?

  • Kitty has to go run some errands

  • Kitty buys a hat to kill Dracula

  • Dracula is wearing the puffy shirt from Seinfeld

  • Matt doesn’t know how to pronounce jaunt

  • Nightcrawler almost beats Dracula by holding up two sticks

  • Dracula has a party bus coffin

At the end of the day, the best way to defeat Dracula is, apparently, to gain his respect. What does any of this mean for Matt's future? Tune in to find out!

Matt Bonaccorso is a seasoned product innovator. He’s spent nearly two decades blending creativity and technology. He’s worked on everything from smart toys to digital products for the world's largest entertainment companies like Nickelodeon and Discovery Channel, and he’s the mind behind Corbit the Robot—a smart, AI-powered companion that entertained kids and parents alike. These days, he’s the co-founder and CEO of Wowables Inc., an up-and-coming startup focused on the future of AI and robotics. Basically, if it’s cutting-edge tech that sparks the imagination, Matt’s got his fingerprints all over it.
