05 Jan 2016 | 3D Print Fail Fast & Forward | 00:12:42
In this WTFFF?! episode Tom and Tracy discuss how success in 3D Printing involves failing, but failing as fast as possible while spending the least amount of money possible. There are arguments to be made that you should not buy your own 3D printer, and just use 3D Hubs, the UPS Store, or a service bureau. Others would argue that having your own 3D printer is the fastest way to fail at the least cost, and the way to go. Regardless, whether you are prototyping parts for tooling, testing parts for production, or using 3D printing to create fine art, time is money. 11 Jun 2015 | What Can Brown Do for 3D Printing? with Burke Jones and Michael Karagavoorian of Kearny Mesa UPS Store | 00:29:56
We visit the first UPS Store franchise to offer 3D Printing and talk to owner Burke Jones and 3D Print Specialist Michael Karagavoorian about the ins and outs of offering 3D Print Services, what it has meant for their business, how it has brought customers into the store and how they manage the challenges of new technology expectations.
Our visit to the San Diego, California area UPS Store was eye-opening in terms of how such a small space can provide such expansive 3D Print Services. The vision it took for a franchise owner like Burke Jones to decide that offering 3D Print Services would not just be a marketing attraction but could really be of service to his community is impressive. The proof of their success is in the recent expansion of 3D Printers and 3D Scanning services and the busy traffic to the store. This Kearny Mesa UPS Store has become a valuable resource to the community and to other UPS Stores and businesses as they expand into 3D Printing as well.

16 Feb 2016 | Why Does My Recurring 3D Print Suddenly Change? | 00:10:20
In this WTFFF?! episode Tom & Tracy answer a technical and practical question from a listener who prints the same type of objects over and over again. The question is: Why does a part that I have printed regularly and successfully over a long period of time all of a sudden have problems when I go and print it? That always surprises me. We’ll get a print off the printer, and there are gaps and holes and things. But we just printed this, and everything seems to be working, but all of a sudden there is a problem. Or something doesn’t form properly. There are several reasons why this can happen. We will run through the three most typical reasons as to why? 17 Dec 2015 | 3D Print Services: Challenge Accepted with David Feeney of SD3D | 00:41:19
It is no secret that we use 3D printing in our business, and have been printing our original product designs on our own 3D printers. As we prepare to bring some of those products to market, we have been searching for a service company to expand our printing capacity as needed. In this WTFFF?! episode Tom and Tracy interview David Feeney, CEO and founder of SD3D, a service business that has gone from a garage startup in late 2012 to a legitimate short run production facility today. This interview is a great case study in what it takes to start a 3D print service business. David has experienced challenges along the way, optimizing the process of sending prints to one of the machines in the “farm,” and customizing the hardware of the machines to perform as needed in a production environment. As a mechanical engineer, David has even added more customized sensors to his printers to make them more reliable, and drive the failure rates down to percentages in the low single digits. SD3D has learned that they need to reduce the human labor in their processes in order to keep costs low, requiring one person to run and maintain as many as six machines. SD3D has a very unique pricing model that is a combination of a membership fee, and a price per part based on volume. The membership fee offsets the cost of adding new machines to keep up with demand, and keeps the cost per part lower. If you do not have a need for regular or continuing production parts, you can pay a higher part cost and avoid the membership fee. Shout out to Sandy DeWald, listener of the podcast, Tracy mentions you in this episode! In this WTFFF?! episode Tom and Tracy discuss the value of 3D Print pictures. When you are trying to market your 3D Print designs, business, or event, publishing photos on social media is critical. In today’s modern business climate, social media marketing is reaching more customers for far less cost than the old school traditional media opportunities of TV, magazines, and newspapers. Real world examples are provided and discussed so you can see how sites like Pinterest are helping companies reach consumers, and how you can too. In this episode of WTFFF?! Tracy asks Tom a question about how to improve the quality of a 3D print. What is the attack process? It starts with defining what improvement is to you. Is it just speed because it is taking too long to print? Or is it quality of the surface smoothness and things like that? Is it having it come off the build plate and it’s done? Meaning you don’t have to clean anything up. 30 Jun 2015 | Are There Liabilities Selling 3D Print Products? | 00:07:52
We were just recently invited to add some of our 3D Printed designs into the Amazon 3D Printed Product Store and had to deal with this issue ourselves. Anytime you market or sell a product there is an inherent liability. In the case of 3D Printing, if you are the one printing and then selling the product, you are the manufacturer and ultimately liable. There has not been a simple and straightforward insurance protection solution for us. It seems that insurance products have not kept up with the technology changes as well.

Amazon 3D Printed Product Store Article on Liability Dangers of Amazon FBA IMPORTANT POST NOTE:
As we went to explore Commercial General Liability Insurance for our own purposes, we have been faced with some surprising barriers. First no common carriers will cover 3D Printing. Second if we want to operate lean via a home office, direct importing and sending to Amazon for FBA, we will also uninsurable because we don’t have a manufacturing facility, but are technically a manufacturer. Third, because we have a blog and a podcast many insurers list us as “ineligible for coverage.”

03 Sep 2015 | Critical 3D Print Operations with Aaron Roy of 3DPrinterOS | 00:39:19
Perhaps you think 3D print operations and the operating system is the least interesting topic for a podcast and you would be in good company with us as well. Everyone said we had to see and talk to 3DPrinterOS for ourselves and they were right! The 3D print operations are absolutely critical to smooth running for any business, school or makerspace, but it doesn’t have to be complex and confusing. Our guest, Aaron Roy discusses with us their mission for making the 3D print operations and workflow streamlined so that deployment can be the same no matter what printer you add. Imagine that… a system you easily learn once and allows you to grow and expand with the technology instead of having to overhaul the system every time you make a change or addition. The data tracking and details of the 3DPrinterOS system although fairly intuitive to learn, have rich depth. So, we decided to add a visual to the podcast mix. Be sure to see the video on either YouTube or embedded below for a quick guided tour of the functions and features including the management of 3D printer farms and multiple users. Don’t let the overly techie topic scare you away, these 3D print operations are critical to clarifying exactly how you might deploy and manage 3D printers in your organization. 3DPrinterOS Do you have 3D Print questions? 24 Sep 2015 | Polar 3D Printer Review – 3D Printing Circles with William Steele of Polar 3D | 00:48:00
What printer should I buy? That is one of the most frequently asked questions we get at WTFFF?! Once you have decided to take the plunge and buy your own 3D printer, your head may spin as you weigh the options and ever-growing choices of 3D printers on the market. The multitude of features and benefits that differentiate each printer mean that there is no one printer that is a perfect fit for all users. So the question is very hard to answer, because it depends on WHAT kinds of things you want to print, your skill level, and your budget. We first saw the Polar 3D printer when it debuted at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in January, 2015. Its open design, circular build plate, and rotational movement immediately caught our attention. Fast forward to August, and Polar 3D submitted one of their printers to WTFFF?! for a formal review. We have now spent a considerable amount of time over the course of more than a month getting to know and understand this unusual but impressive 3D printer. After weeks of working closely with the printer, we interviewed William Steele, CEO of Polar 3D, and the chief engineer/creator of the Polar 3D printer. Happy Mardi Gras! In this WTFFF?! episodes Tracy asks Tom “How come you never make me anything?” I always say how you never make me anything, but it’s really not true. You did make me something for Mardi Gras. Not for Valentine’s Day, mind you, but for Mardi Gras. We had the opportunity to be on a Game of Thrones Mardi Gras float in the parade in San Diego this past weekend. And you made me a Melisandre necklace. 10 Sep 2015 | 3D Print Metal – Titanium Anniversary with Rich Merlino, David Hall, and Dr. Cesar Terrazas of Addaero | 00:46:26
Reaching 100 WTFFF?! Podcast episodes is a milestone for us and to commemorate it, 3D Print Metal additive manufacturer, Addaero printed the Angel design that started it all for us, only this time instead of PLA, it is printed in Titanium. Using Electron Beam Melting or Powderbed Fusion Technology, 3D Print Metal manufacturing is changing the geometric constraints on aerospace, underwater, space and other industrial (and consumer) applications for machined parts. Rich Merlino, David Hall and Dr. Cesar Terrazas talk not only about the process and application of 3D Print Metal but have dissuaded any preconceptions that 3D Printed parts on a plane are unsafe. In fact, Tracy is convinced that she would rather be in a plane with 3D Print Metal parts – without all the machining and handwork involved in traditional fabrication, it should be safer! We talk also about what’s holding back widespread adoption and the types of projects that can benefit from additive manufacturing especially when looking at high mold costs and low initial volume. 30 Jul 2015 | Pitch a 3D Print Business | 00:39:05
Who knew that picking one winner for our 3D Print Business Mentorship Contest could be so tough? Our three finalists all have a great business idea and passion for 3D Printing. The real debate might just be – Who can we help the most?
READ THEIR PITCH:
Eduardo Martini – Brazil The idea of the business is to produce and sell special gifts using a 3d printer and a laser cutter. The prices for toys and gifts are increasing and the ability to choose a thing that a person will like in the color she wants and have a laser cut card to go with it will be amazing. We will ship it nation wide. The product can be bought just printed or with an optional finishing like epoxy resign, acetone vapor, hand sanded, also available the option of airbrushing the product in different colors. On the website will be a rank of the most bought products and suggestions for special occasion.
Kelechi Ojinnaka – Nigeria – Afera3D
I am building Africa’s best and leading 3D printing service bureau and 3D printing market place. We will provide online access to individuals and companies across Africa who desire to bring their creativity to life. We will be the continent’s leader in providing the best solutions in 3D printing technology and services. We will be driven by innovation tailored towards exceeding our customers’ expectation. With our strong knowledge of the local economy and our passion for 3D printing, we will build a service with global standards well suited for Africa. Our bureau will enable people from the most remote place have the ability to create and market their creativity. We are the future of Africa. We are Afera3D Technology.
Michael Williams – USA – Melange.co My business will be a store front for all things crafted, with a makerspace in the background. I like to make things as well as teach others to make things. I plan to rent out shelf space to makers for selling or even just exhibiting. I want to have 3D printers available for people to see in operation, and for them to purchase. I want to have touch displays setup for customers to do simple customizations and order customized parts from them. I want the makerspace to be like the wizard behind the curtain. I feel the average consumer doesn’t care how it’s made, and too much detail may even scare them off. So we’d only show them down the rabbit hole, if they want to know how something is made.
Stay tuned tomorrow for the winner. Who would you pick?

22 Oct 2015 | Builder Dual 3D Printer review – Double Dutch Color 3D Printing | 00:41:46
Once we started trying to print with a two-color machine, we quickly began to understand why there were so few such machines available on the market. Most dual extrusion 3D printers have two nozzles that move together in the same plane, causing prints to fail more often than not. We gave it s serious effort over a period of nine months before we gave up. Earlier this summer a 3D print colleague of ours, who has been a guest on WTFFF?!, Brandon Davis, introduced us to a distributor named US Cutter, and the Builder Dual 3D Printer. This printer is very unique in that it is a two-color printer, but has only one nozzle! US Cutter was so convinced that the Builder was much better than other two-color printers, that they agreed to submit it for a review. So for about two months now we have been working with the Builder Dual 3D Printer. LINKS MENTIONED: US Cutter Go to hazzdesign.com or shoot us a message on our facebook or twitter! 18 Jun 2015 | Back to the 3D Print Future with Brandon Davis of Blue Dragon | 00:29:52
Our guest Brandon Davis, CEO of Blue Dragon and former CEO Leapfrog USA has tremendous passion and respect for both the history and future of 3D Printing. He believes the key to success in this market takes an open mindshare approach combined with capitalist intentions. We could not agree more!
Brandon is one of the rare individuals who 3D models and prints himself so his perspective always comes from a usability view with a broader view out for turnkey solutions that will make 3D Printing mainstream.
IN THIS EPISODE: Do your research when buying a printer. Go see one, test one and ask lots of questions. 3D Printers today still require a lot of perseverance so 3D Print companies need to be providing better help and support. Materials are everything! Aggressive companies with protectionist practices are holding back parts of the market, but this is already beginning to backfire. LINKS MENTIONED: WhirlyBall 3D Printer OS 3D Hubs

22 Dec 2015 | 3D Print Branding Problems | 00:13:18
What do you think of our 3D Printing company brand? This is a question that has been posed to Tom and Tracy several times recently by established companies in the market. In this WTFFF?! episode Tom and Tracy discuss the branding conundrum faced by many companies in the current 3D printing market. Companies established in the early 3D Print hacker open source community created brands that resonated with that market, but how well do those names play today? As the market grows with non-hacker beginners, students, and mass retail consumers, how do brand names need to change to speak to that audience? Does the brand promise they represent fit the current and future growth markets they seek?
