30 Jul 2017 | Ep 31 - Harsh Truths from Your Gringas | 01:08:47
This one is mostly for the ladies, but guys, there’s lots for you to learn here, too. On this episode Kari and Kelly are talking about some of the harsh truths that they’ve come across while doing this whole intentional living thing. Kari and Kelly also talk about how much ridiculous levels of alcohol consumption is normalized in our culture, and how people tend to be hesitant to talk to a friend when they see them taking things a little too far. This episode wasn’t a fun one for the gringas, but it’s important. And if your gringas won’t tell you the truth, who will? PRODUCTION NOTE: Traveling with audio equipment is challenging, and Kari’s mic cord seems to have been on the fritz during this episode. It’s still listen-able and this was too good of a conversation to not post, but if you’re wondering what’s up with the audio — well, that’s what’s up. There are several articles and stats referenced in this episode. 29 Aug 2017 | Ep 36 – Where We Went Wrong: The Acapulco Edition | 00:29:13
Kari and Kelly have successfully escaped from Acapulco, and are in San Diego, California breathing the sweet air of American freedom. They left a few days earlier than planned, but it wasn’t soon enough. Several mistakes were made in the planning process of this leg of the Workationing adventure – chiefly, the ladies never should’ve landed in Acapulco in the first place. Once again, decision fatigue set in and led the Gringas somewhere weird – and unfortunately, that wasn’t the only error they made. When you’ve been sick for two weeks straight, maybe it’s time to shift locations instead of hoping things will get better. There’s a good chance they won’t. Probably at least one of the ladies should’ve made a hospital visit, but nobody wanted to find out firsthand what the inside of an Acapulco ER looked like. Also, crazy Airbnb hosts should not be tolerated. If they tell you they’re crazy early on with weird behavior, BELIEVE THEM. They’re only going to get crazier as they get more comfortable. 13 Aug 2018 | Ep 54: Relationshit Part IV: The Aftermath | 00:58:13
After the releasing the Relationing Thrillogy, Kari and Kelly got TONS of letters from listeners who wanted to weigh in with their thoughts as well — and they decided to read some of their faves out loud. The ladies heard from a listener who has been on 93 Tinder first dates (the gringas were shook), a listener who is exploring polyamory as solopoly person, and they even read a letter calling them out for being a bit hypocritical. 15 Mar 2017 | Ep 11: We Made it to Medellín! | 00:49:19
Kari and Kelly have made it to the second leg of Workationing in Medellín, Colombia. They thought they’d solve the problems of the last location by renting an Airbnb in a high rise apartment complex, but that proves to have its own set of risks and complications. Somehow, the ladies seem to have landed in the sex tourist skyscraper – and there are a lot of Americans here. Somebody lost a cousin Greg, and needs to come pick him up at the rooftop pool where he’s drunk, banging teenagers and embarrassing your family. The views are amazing and the city is gorgeous, but there’s a lot going on under the surface. A week into this segment of Workationing, the ladies have learned all kinds of new things about money laundering, chop shops, surgeons and Tindering in cartel country. A few days into the Medellín stay, the girls get spooked by a fairly threatening man and hole up in their apartment for several days. It’s not all scary and bad, though. The digital nomad community in Medellín is up and popping, the views are incredible and the food is absolutely out of this world...if you can stay alive long enough to eat it. 28 Jun 2017 | Ep 28 – Escape Room and Poker Tournament (Bucket List #5-6), Plus Kelly’s BD | 00:35:21
Operation: Make Kelly Cry was a smashing success, and Kelly had one of the best 27th birthdays she’s ever had. To celebrate another year of being 27, the ladies had a bucket list weekend: two items crossed off of their bucket lists in two days. The first bucket list item was escaping the zombie apocalypse at A/MAZE Montreal, a big warehouse that features several different escape room scenarios. After being infected with the zombie virus, Kelly and Kari must escape out of a locked room, create the antidote to the virus, and then escape again – all within an hour. The ladies really threw themselves into this one! Next up was entering a Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament at a Playground Poker Club, just outside of Montreal. The ladies were one of several hundred people who entered, and only around 2 percent of the people there were women – if you’re a lady at a poker table, you’re in for a real treat. That treat, specifically, is sitting at a table with at least one asshole. 13 Jul 2018 | Ep 52: Relationshit Part II: Dating in the Digital Era | 01:22:41
In Part II of the relationshit series, Kari and Kelly talk about dating in the digital era...starting with the decision to try online dating in the first place. Kari admits to her shocking history of internet dating (she’s a real O.G. on that front), and the ladies talk about Tinder strategies, first date escape plans and seeing your ex and his new wife post FB photos in front of the Christmas tree you bought years ago. The Gringas also have you covered on some strategies to make your Google search results more attractive to prospective dates. Then there’s the breakup side of dating in the digital era – do you make an announcement on Facebook? Do you stay social media friends with their friends? Block them on all fronts? Instagram wars, cyberstalking your ex’s new partners and more plugs for Internet therapy abound (the ladies love their internet therapists so much, they have an affiliate relationship with BetterHelp – get a week of free online therapy at betterhelp.com/workationing). 22 Feb 2017 | Ep 4: Local Flavor: The Puerto Rico Edition | 00:28:17
Kari and Kelly talk about the culture, vibe and food in Augada. Do you know what “chicken of the trees” is? The answer to that question is horrifying, and costs $18 per pound. Plantains are everywhere, and they’re mostly fried. Kelly tries her first beach coconut, Kari encounters free-range horses and donkeys at the track. Riding your horse to the convenience store is absolutely a thing out here, as are HUGE stereo systems on the rooftops of cars. 02 Jan 2019 | Ep 59: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles: Traveling Across Europe! | 00:56:44
Despite making Amsterdam their home base for 2018, the Gringas have still been making lots of time to travel! Amsterdam is a great hub for traveling in Europe, and the ladies made it a point this year to take full advantage of that fact. From Turkey to Paris to popping to another country for lunch, Kari and Kelly have been up to a lot over the past few months -- and they’re ready to tell you all about their adventures!

02 Jan 2018 | Ep 41 – Leaving Las Vegas and the Liberty Movement | 00:38:29
Kelly and Kari have arrived in Prague, and now that they’ve had some time to reflect on their experiences at FreedomFest (and the experience of others – they received dozens of messages from other women in libertarianism outlining similar experiences with misogyny). Ultimately, Kari decides that she can no longer be part of a movement that tolerates disrespecting women to such an extensive degree. After 15 years in the liberty movement, it seems like a big decision – but it’s definitely time to move on. 15 Apr 2020 | Ep 65: Escaping India & Moving to Scotland During a Pandemic | 00:59:51
Kari and Ashley are comin’ in hot from quarantine, and discuss in detail their experiences leaving India during the COVID-19 crisis – as well as what happened to their friends who came on Workation (one ends up under police lockdown, the other is still stranded in India a month later). Both ladies experience visa problems as a result of the coronavirus, one of which is ongoing. 14 Apr 2017 | Ep 16: Local Flavor – Medellín (Mild) | 00:57:16
Medellín is a spicy place, and in the next two episodes Kelly and Kari are bringing the heat – starting with mild and building up to burn-your-face-off-and-put-it-in-a-barrel-in-a-chop-shop. The Gringas start off by explaining the constant undertone of misogyny that taints the local flavor of Medellín, then get into the killer style (shoutout to the return of 90s body suits!). There are ancient trees growing in the center of gorgeous shopping malls, circus-level entertainment at stoplights and truly amazing food at incredible prices relative to the US. The ladies discuss their favorite (and least favorite) restaurant experiences in town, which include a prom night nightmare and very, very weird bathrooms. The rednecks back home are going to be EXTREMELY interested in hearing about tejo, the national sport of Colombia. Think cornhole, but with explosives and even more drinking. Lawn darts better watch their back, because tejo is coming for their kill count. The Gringas get into why you should always carry more cash than you think you might need, as well as where you can source both Chicklets and cocaine at once. 31 Mar 2020 | Ep 64: Hitting the Holi Festival in Goa, India – and Leaving Just in Time | 00:54:01
Kari and Ashley hit three continents in three weeks, starting with the US for a work trip and Belgium for their friend Steve’s 40th birthday party. Ashley wins an orgasm faking contest, and Kari signs a major new PR client for The Content Factory. The next stop: Goa, India for the Holi festival. The Noname Guesthouse in Arambol sponsored the lady’s stay, and Holi was everything the ladies thought it would be (Google image search Holi, if you’re not familiar with it!). The ladies left Amsterdam the same day the first case of coronavirus showed up in the city. A week into their India trip, it becomes clear that they need to get out of India – and FAST. Borders start closing, and not everyone in their travel group makes it out before India totally locks down. 19 Apr 2017 | Ep 17: Local Flavor – Medellín (SPICY) | 01:00:16
The second episode of Medellín’s local flavor kicks the heat up a notch. In this episode, Kari and Kelly talk about sex tourism, “blow powder,” money laundering, drones, scary men in their building, cartels and a lot more. The Gringas explain why you always need to get in the front seat of your Uber ride in Medellín, what it’s like to see dozens of teenage prostitutes in their building and whether people with sensitive hearts should come to a place like this. 23 Mar 2017 | Ep 13: Gringas in Strange Land | 00:54:00
Nearly three months into their Latin American leg of Workationing, Kari and Kelly have learned a thing or two about what it’s like to be Gringas in a strange land. Medellín, Colombia is on a whole different level than Puerto Rico, and the ladies are learning this lesson the hard way. The way the women are treated – and treat each other – in Medellín is unlike anything The Gringas are used to. What happens when their white lady privilege gets stripped away, and they go from protected class to gringa status? Nothing good, as it turns out. 18 Sep 2017 | Ep 38 – We Lost 105 Pounds! | 00:42:19
In a time and place when you can lose weight from anywhere, two ladies in their mid-to-late 27s have decided to – and so far, Kelly and Kari have lost over 100 pounds this year (combined). The ladies have received many emails about their weight loss journey, and in this episode they talk about how they managed to lose the weight equivalent of a chubby fifth grader. Kelly’s about to get a full feature in Women’s Health for her efforts! Traveling the world while working as digital nomads, you’d think it would be harder to lose weight than at home – this isn’t the case. Kari and Kelly talk about how their travels have influenced their weight loss, and how living intentionally has made all the difference. Both Kari and Kelly have tried (unsuccessfully) to lose weight in the past, and they talk about what makes this time different and how they both got fat in the first place. Also, can somebody do a wellness check on America? There’s a reason we’re so fat as a country, and the ladies suspect it has something to do with depression, a lazy lifestyle and a dash of self loathing. Abroad, people are generally fit – and even with the weight loss, the ladies still have a ways to go before they’re “European skinny” instead of “American skinny.” The weight loss journey has been far from perfect, and has been peppered with nachos and fries with mayo. Still, Kari and Kelly are crushing their weight loss goals and Kelly is on track to lose 100 lbs (by herself!) by the end of the year. 30 Jun 2017 | Ep 29 – Getting Unstuck: How to Escape a Shitty Situation | 00:52:03
The most powerful force in the world is habit, and the ladies are creating some new ones for themselves. One of these habits is clocking 10,000 steps on their FitBits each day, which leaves a lot of time for talking. Specifically, talking about escaping. The Escape Room activity during Kelly’s birthday got the ladies thinking about ways in which they’ve been trapped, and ways they see their friends getting trapped in situations that prevent them from being happy, accomplishing goals and realizing their full potential. Living intentionally isn’t easy, but it’s worth working through that process. Kari and Kelly talk about feeling trapped and seeing people trapped in bad relationships, jobs and careers, hometowns, debt or other financial obligations, less than ideal bodies, and poor habits. The first step to escaping a situation you’re feel trapped in is to recognize that you want to get out of it. The ladies talk about how they mapped out plans for their own escapes, and how others can follow a similar plan. There are some harsh truths about escaping shitty situations. First, you have to admit that you’re trapped. Second, you need to get some perspective on what it’s going to take to get out. No matter what way you feel trapped, you can escape – but you might not like what you have to give up to get out. There’s a ticking clock on life, which means that you don’t have an infinite amount of time to do the things that you want to. Accepting that some costs are sunk, and being willing to move on, can be a painful process but the not as painful as learning the hard way (and too late) about the sunk cost fallacy. Don’t be afraid to change your mind, and when you do you shouldn't view it as progress instead of a personal failure. Be honest with yourself, but also be compassionate with yourself. And surround yourself with other people who behave the same way. Finally, the ladies talk about their process for mapping out escape plans. It involves Post-It notes, and windows with a view. 22 Feb 2017 | Ep 0: Let's Become Digital Nomads | 00:37:21
Kari has a pitch for Kelly: how about we spend 2017 traveling the world as digital nomads on Workation? Introducing Kari and Kelly, game recognizing game and general badass bitchery. What dead parents can teach you about living fearlessly and intentionally. The four rules of workationing: making more than you earn, traveling light, accomplishing goals and spreading good travel karma. 14 Nov 2017 | Ep 40 – What Happens at FreedomFest in Vegas (Doesn’t Stay in Vegas) | 00:51:41
Kari and Kelly are in Las Vegas for the FreedomFest conference, which apparently draws quite the male chauvinist crowd. The ladies detail their experiences at the conference – both Kari and Kelly were approached by different men at the conference, who asked the ladies to prostitute themselves. One man is the president of a libertarian think tank (he offered to fly Kelly to exotic locations in exchange for sex), the other is a fairly large donor (he asked Kari if she’d like to be his escort for the night). This was a first for both Kari and Kelly, and it was horrifying for them to be treated that way. The ladies discuss their experiences with men in the liberty movement, and talk about #MeToo talks in hotel rooms with other women. There seems to be a real problem with the behavior of men in the libertarian space, and when the ladies host a “get ready” party for Steve Forbes’ 70th birthday gala, the other women in the hotel room shared their experiences, as well. There were stories of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and general misogyny – this happens everywhere, but it seems to be especially bad in the liberty movement. Women don’t feel comfortable coming forward because the men in question are high profile, and/or have thousands of “alt-right” followers. These men are invited to speak at conferences and events, where they draw in more like-minded assholes. This is why there aren’t more female libertarians, and why we can’t have nice things. The ladies discuss why they think it’s worse in the libertarian space, and what people can do to turn around the increasingly toxic culture that exists. First, other men need to start checking each other. Second, the liberty movement should shrink the size of its tent – the alt-right and Red Pill types shouldn’t be tolerated. As a result of the gross behavior they were subjected to at FreedomFest, the ladies won’t return to the conference next year – and Kari might leave the liberty movement entirely. 17 Jan 2018 | Ep 43 – We Made it to Amsterdam (And the Tinder Game is FIRE!) | 00:32:14
After leaving Prague early, the ladies are posting up in Amsterdam for at least two months...assuming they ever get into their new apartment. Pro travel tip: if you’re going to be digital nomad-ing, look for rental agencies that cater to expats. You’re going to save 50% on monthly Airbnb rental fees this way. The ladies get to find out how European and American banking systems differ, and that difference keeps them in a hotel for several extra days. The Tinder game out here is on fire, and the ladies have pre-swiped their way to a few dates. On Day 1 in Amsterdam, Kari goes on a Tinder date with Paul, who takes her to a fancy restaurant followed by drag queen bingo at a gay bar. The weird factor is high with this one, and there may be some long-term potential here. Kelly’s first Tinder date doesn’t go as well, which sparks a feminist rant that you won’t want to miss. 29 Jan 2020 | Ep 62: Turkey Day in Turkey | 01:03:42
Ashley and Kari head to Antalya, Turkey to celebrate Thanksgiving and get their medical tourism on. The ladies kick it off with some Botox and fillers, at around a 75% discount on what they’d spend in the US or Amsterdam. Kari’s spent several months over the last year in Antalya, and she and Nico play host to a crew of six friends for the holiday. Sourcing a Turkey in Turkey turned out to be a surprisingly difficult endeavor, and the ladies visit a sketchy theme park. Ashley leaves her dog, Djoko, in the hands of a pet sitter she found on TrustedHousesitters.com while she’s in Turkey. 07 Nov 2017 | Ep 39 – Desert Road Trip to Bury our Dear Friend Dom (Bucket list #8-9) | 00:38:48
Kari and Kelly are back from hiatus and coming in hot from the Paris hotel and resort in Las Vegas – they're in town for FreedomFest, a libertarian conference. In this episode, the ladies talk about about two bucket list items they crossed off on the way there: road tripping from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and burying their dear friend Dom in the desert. The ladies rent a fancy car, and inspired by the movie Fandango (starring THE Kevin Costner), they get a shovel and start digging a hole in the Mojave Desert to put Dom in. The plan is to come back and dig her up, but only if one of three things happens first. This brings Kelly and Kari to talk about setting intentions, and what it means for them. This Workationing adventure started with the desire to live more intentionally, and the ladies aren’t done yet. They outline their intentions over the next several months, including losing more weight and getting more serious about their dating game (they both have hot Tinder dates lined up for Amsterdam). Kari and Kelly touch on the subject of polyamory, their concerns about that particular type of relationship arrangement and whether or not they'd consider being polyamorous with partners in the future. 10 Mar 2017 | Ep 10: Iguana in Aguada: The Fixer Interview | 00:25:55
Kari and Kelly have talked a lot about fixers, and their value on the road – and in this episode, they interview William, their first fixer. William is the king of the grift, and he talks about how you can find money anywhere...even in the trees. Speaking of trees, William is the one who introduced the ladies to the term “chicken of the trees,” which is what some Puerto Rican locals are trying to rebrand iguana meat as. William talks about how he found the people who sell iguana meat, and how he’s discovered the potential business opportunity in catching and selling live iguanas. Iguanas aren’t the only thing William was after in Puerto Rico, though. He also was able to free dive for conch and octopus (octopuses?), and teach the ladies a thing or two about making money on the road. What’s it like to be a fixer for Kari and Kelly? What’s the best grift William’s ever run? Lots of ground is covered here, and you won’t want to miss it. 22 Feb 2017 | Ep 5: Technical Difficulties and Travel Hacks | 00:18:28
It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention, and in this episode Kari and Kelly talk about the travel hacks they gave birth to on the road. What’s the best way to make ice when you have no ice cube trays? How do you watch your must-see TV when you don’t get the channel at your Airbnb and it’s not streaming live online? What’s the best way to take a conference call when there’s a loud-ass street festival right outside your window? From podcast problems to shower stall business meetings, Kari and Kelly talk about all of the technical difficulties they’ve encountered over the month they spent in Puerto Rico – and how they hacked their way to solutions. 09 Jun 2018 | Ep 50 - There Is No Spoon: Overcoming Mental Blocks | 01:07:15
Kari and Kelly have been working hard to launch their new training program for aspiring digital nomads. Along the way they’ve been having lots of discussions with people about the mental blocks that keep them from moving forward toward their goals, and they’re beginning to notice a pattern. From getting stuck in bad habits to grappling with imposter syndrome, there are a lot of mental landmines to maneuver around when you’re making a big change in your life. The ladies tackle the most common ones and share what they’ve learned about how to deal with them. (Though admittedly, it’s an ongoing battle.) Kari and Kelly also dish on their secret weapon for self-improvement: their internet therapists. 25 May 2017 | Ep 24: Adventures in Coliving | 00:41:22
Kari and Kelly are in Manchester, New Hampshire for the next week – and they’re sharing a large house with five other adults, like a grown-ass version of The Real World. What happens when seven people share a space on an ongoing basis? Is it amazing, or a recipe for disaster? The ladies talk about their experiences, how much coliving rentals cost in both the US and abroad, plus what’s included. Coliving has always been sort of a hippie thing, but millennials are taking it over – or at least, putting their own spin on it. Kari and Kelly discuss where they could see it going right (and really, really wrong). There’s big money behind coliving, too. Silicon Valley-backed startups and goliaths alike are getting into the coworking and coliving trend, with companies like WeLive and Common creating coliving spaces to be shared by 8+ adults. The cost? Anywhere from $1,500-$2,000 or more per room in coliving houses located in Oakland, California and Brooklyn, New York. But who is coliving really good for? Kari and Kelly outline what types of personalities and lifestyles they think it could be best for (single moms should get in on this trend!). They also cover a few ‘worst case scenarios’ and top things to consider before writing the first rent check. 15 Aug 2017 | Ep 33 – Staying in John Wayne’s Sex Dojo (Bucket List #7: The Los Flamingos) | 00:38:49
The ladies are having a hell of a time in Acapulco, and not in the good way. To escape from their Airbnb compound for a couple of days, they decided to hit up the local hotspot all of the cab drivers keep telling them about: The Los Flamingos Resort, which was once owned by John Wayne. The entire hotel is pink, kitschy and everything Kari’s ever dreamed of in a throwback resort. Formerly referred to as Hollywood Gang Hideaway (from 1950-1984), the resort – and in particular, Casa Tarzan, the standalone round house on the property – was frequented by the likes of Cary Grant, Farrah Fawcett, Joan Collins, Errol Flynn, George Hamilton, Roy Rogers and lots of other Old Hollywood royalty. Johnny Weissmueller, the actor who played Tarzan, lived in the house named after him until he died. Hopefully not in the actual Casa Tarzan, but that was never made entirely clear. You can still feel the Old Hollywood glam as you walk around the place, and there are placards with stories and photos of the celebrities who used to party HARD at the Los Flamingos. The hotel is like a time capsule of days long gone, and the celebrities who came to this hotel put Acapulco on the map as a THE place for the rich and famous to go on vacation. In turn, that attracted more regular tourists...for a time, at least. Obviously a Quadruple Junior Suite Deluxe ($76/night) wasn’t bucket list-y enough for a stay at the Los Flamingos, so the Gringas went big and sprung for a night in Casa Tarzan ($150/night). Once they got a tour of the resort and Casa Tarzan, the Gringas were SOLD – and not just on the wraparound windows and gorgeous views. Without a doubt, some VERY sexy shenanigans went down at Casa Tarzan back in the day. If the building’s architecture and design are any indication, John Wayne and his friends must’ve been real sex fiends. The circular house is bifurcated down the middle, with the left half split into two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a small kitchenette. The rest of the house is dedicated to the living room, which is what makes Casa Tarzan what it is: incredible. There’s a platform bed that’s built into the living room, and there’s a wraparound spectator couch that seats 12, uh, spectators. A hammock is slung between the bed and the couch, but doesn’t obstruct the view. This living room isn’t a living room at all, it’s a fuck dojo the likes of which the ladies had never seen before. A coco loco after checking into the Old Hollywood sex dojo, the ladies are swimming in the kidney-shaped pool, taking in a sunset from the inside of a dragon’s mouth and overall blissed out...until night falls and the horror show begins. It starts with bugs so big it’s a real mystery how they’re also able to fly – and they’re INSIDE the house with the Gringas. Before the bug situation starts to get really out of control, the roving pack of dogs show up and start running laps around the circle of the wraparound porch. They’re still out there when the bugs start to exponentially multiply, but the dude at the front desk is not. The mattresses at Casa Tarzan are not to be missed, mostly because you can’t escape the smell of them if you tried. It’s entirely possible that the mattresses in Casa Tarzan are the originals that John Wayne and his friends got down on, and while Kari was got sick over the scent of guests from the past Kelly received dozens of bug bites on her back. At least, the ladies are hoping those are bug bites, and not some sort of rash that will require hospital attention. Through a series of events that aren’t up to code (namely, the resort didn’t take a credit card or payment upon entry, only exit, and there wasn’t a night manager), the ladies ended up stuck in a Technicolor dream turned nightmare. 21 Mar 2018 | Ep 46 - Keeping it Weird in Amsterdam (Part 2) | 00:39:19
In this episode, things get weird. Kari throws a surprise party that fails on multiple levels, Kelly goes on a date with an emotional con artist, and the ladies talk about their upcoming return to the United States. It looks like Workationing is going to become a real business, and the ladies are considering incorporating...in the Netherlands. Two lawyers and a team of Dutch accountants later, the Gringas are trying to figure out if Amsterdam should become their new home base. 14 May 2018 | Ep 49 - Depression, Breakups, Expatting and Getting Ma’med While Naked | 01:17:17
In the Giant Catch-Up, Part 2 the ladies dig into how they caught a major case of the winter blues. Business is booming, which required travel to San Diego and Edinburgh, Scotland...where the ladies holed up in their AirBnb and binge-watched Outlander. Both Kari and Kelly experience breakups, and faceplant off of the keto diet and into gaining a weird amount of weight in a very short period of time. Expatting and integrating into Dutch society proves to be more challenging than the Gringas were expecting. Kari visits a Dutch spa, where the situation is very much coed and everyone is 100% naked. Awkwardness and embarrassment ensue. The ladies pull out of their nosedive and back onto their bikes, over to the gym – Jos is back in the game, and they’re seeing major progress. Your Gringas get accepted into an exclusive club, and win friends through Kelly’s Total Eclipse of Karaoke. Ever hear of internet therapy? 17 Sep 2018 | Ep 56: How to Become a Digital Nomad | 01:12:06
As fans of the Workationing podcast already know, Kari and Kelly huge advocates of the digital nomad lifestyle. The ladies have used their ability to work remotely to travel the world, knock countless items off their bucket lists, and generally live a more intentional and fulfilling life. However, being location independent isn’t all sunshine, rainbows, and killer shots for Insta. There are also logistical issues. You’ll most likely need to ditch your rent/mortgage, find a place to store anything you want to keep, rehome pets, breakup with partners who don’t share your vision, find someone to handle your mail, figure out what to do with your car, get international travelers insurance, and much more! 06 Jul 2017 | Ep 30 – Bitcoin, Ethereum & Altcoins (oh, my!): Hodling on to Cryptocurrency and Regret | 00:35:00
Kari and Kelly have known about Bitcoin since the early days...one got in, the other is hodling on to some bithurt. In this episode, the ladies talk about their histories with cryptocurrencies and the insane amount of regret they – and other people they know – have about not buying in soon enough (or not hodling on long enough). Don’t know what hodl means? No prob, Kelly’s got you covered with a dramatic reading of the HODL forum post that went viral. There’s also an acapella rendition of Hodl On for One More Day to the tune of the Wilson Phillips song. The ladies discuss various use cases for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, including remittance to developing countries and charities that want transparency and to ensure funds get to the right place. In countries where hyperinflation is running rampant (like Venezuela), Bitcoin is literally saving lives. Kari and Kelly also talk about the various ways you can get Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dash and other cryptocurrencies (see related links, below). There are traditional exchanges, or you can meet up with a dude from Craigslist or Facebook, or you can go to New Hampshire and try to hunt down a Bitcoin millionaire – the ladies give you some clues on what to look for in order to find one. Fortunately for Kelly, there’s a Bitcoin Embassy in Montreal that has Bitcoin ATMs she can buy crypto from. Unfortunately for Kelly, that Bitcoin Embassy is closed until the day after the ladies leave the city. Luckily, Chainsaw is in Montreal for a bachelor party! Chainsaw is a Bitcoin bro Kari’s known for years, and the ladies met up with him while he was in town. He set Kelly up with a Bitcoin wallet, now she just needs to put some crypto in there. To thank him for his help, the Gringas helped Chainsaw miss his plane back to Central America. Two days later, he’s still in Montreal.

09 Jan 2018 | Ep 42 – We Made it to Prague! (And Now We’re Leaving) | 00:43:05
Kari and Kelly are finally getting to their European leg of Workationing – and they’re kicking it off in Prague (or actually, the hellish airport in Frankfurt, Germany). After missing their connecting flight and getting to spend an extra 8 hours touring the airport lounges in Frankfurt, the ladies arrive at their Airbnb in Prague, Czech Republic. As usual, things don’t go to plan. Due to “hot water issues” at the Airbnb they’d originally rented, they find themselves staying in the projects outside of the city. The bathroom is a real danger zone, and the Airbnb host keeps delaying when they can move into the apartment they rented. Kari goes on a Tinder date, which also has some unexpected twists and turns. A Speedo-clad Eastern European man in a hot tub on a boat offers to let Kari hop aboard and share his charcuterie plate, and there’s some hobo-style train hopping adventures. The Gringas are still not at 100% after Acapulco, and have learned from their previous mistakes. Instead of staying in a bad situation, they’re leaving early for their next destination: Amsterdam. 06 Mar 2017 | Ep 8: The Uncle Tom Letter | 00:34:33
The Workationing Facebook page (facebook.com/workationing – check it out!) received a message from Kelly’s uncle, Tom. Uncle Tom is a very seasoned traveler, and has some advice for the ladies as they work their way around the world. Items up for discussion in this episode: how recognizing others being judgey can help keep you safe, how there’s no way for Kelly and Kari to really blend in (but they should keep trying anyway), and how being American in another country is generally not a good thing. Uncle Tom also underscores the importance of finding fixers while out on the road, because these are the people who can help you the most. It’s important that your fixer likes you, and somebody who may be presenting themselves as a fixer might actually be a scammer. So, there’s a lot to watch out for. This is further complicated by the fact that, according to Uncle Tom, Kari and Kelly’s “sketch radar” is not calibrated. The ladies agree with this, and discuss how to better tune their sketch radar – but it can be extremely difficult when you don’t even know what the hell you’re looking at. Most of the time, Kelly and Kari really don’t know. This ep concludes with a fun story about how Kari almost got the Workationing crew killed by giving a Colombian woman a compliment. 16 Sep 2019 | Ep 60: She Was An American Girl | 01:37:32
The Gringas are back, with an epic catch up and big news. Kelly’s coming in hot from Gainesville, Florida – the home of Tom Petty – with some massive career and life changes. She also found love in Cleveland! Kari’s in Antalya, Turkey and about to hit a mystery location that will be included in the next podcast episode. In this episode the ladies explain what they’ve been up to for the last several months, and how manifestation and trusting your gut can lead you to exactly the place where you need to be – even if it isn’t where you expect it. Some new characters are briefly introduced, which will lead to some fun guest hosts in future episodes of the podcast. The ladies also reflect on what the last two years of Workationing have meant to them, what they’ve learned and how their lives have been transformed by the experience. NOTE: Kari's audio on this episode is "less than ideal" but for obvious reasons, this isn't one we could re-record. 03 Feb 2020 | Ep 63: New Decade, New Goals, New Adventures, Newly Single | 00:56:13
It’s a new decade (depending on who you talk to), and the Gringas are ringing in 2020 in typically epic fashion – starting with a masquerade ball for New Year’s Eve. Kari goes through a breakup, and Ashley deals with a bike accident which kicks off a discussion about some of the most hardcore biking injuries the ladies and their friends have experienced in Amsterdam. The ladies talk about goal setting and achieving, as well as their New Year’s resolutions. Kari’s going to write a book, and Ashley is going to take her career to the next level. There’s also a story about Helen Keller that you don’t know, and won’t want to miss. Coming up, the ladies head to Brussels for another magical mystery birthday tour and head to Goa, India for the Holi Festival March 9-10. Want to join them? 04 May 2017 | Ep 21: The Matt Simon Interview | 00:38:42
After Medellín, the ladies have questions about drug policy and its impact on Colombia – and they’ve found a man with answers. Matt Simon is the New England Political Director and Policy Analyst for the Marijuana Policy Project, and he came to visit the Gringas for a week in Medellín. In this interview, Kari and Kelly ask Matt about drug policy in the United States, and what the ramifications of the international War On Drugs are in places like Colombia. Is there a better way to approach drug policy? If so, what is it and what change(s) will we see? Matt also talks about his experience in Colombia – including what he saw at the gym one day. 09 Aug 2017 | Ep 32 – We Made it to Acapulco, Mexico! | 00:39:39
The ladies have gone from Montreal to Boston to live tweet from the Pride parade (work is tough sometimes), and have now settled into their Airbnb in Acapulco. How’d they find this place? It starts with Kiwi.com, the Flo Rida music video for Whistle and a $177 one-way flight – and ends with some killer views and regrets. Acapulco is hot AF, and the sweat situation is making it a real challenge to stay hydrated. Kari got sick almost immediately upon arrival, and a stranger broke into the apartment at 9am...just in time to see Kelly with no pants on. The ladies also have a cray cray Airbnb host to contend with, which should make this an interesting leg of the trip. Fortunately, Santiago has heard of this Acapulco business and isn’t at all impressed – he’s flying in to keep an eye on the Gringas in this strange, and allegedly dangerous, city. 24 Jul 2018 | Ep 53: Relationshit Part III: When to Walk Away (and When to Run Away Screaming) | 01:02:44
In the final chapter of the Relationshit trilogy, Kari and Kelly talk about when to walk away from a relationship...and when to run away screaming. When you’re a person of a certain age, should you settle at some point? When do you know when it’s time to hit the “tap out” button, whether that means staying or going? If you don’t have a shared vision of the future, it might be time to go. See also: if you’re not sexually compatible or the chemistry just isn’t there. What happens when you’re no longer sexually attracted to your partner – or your partner is no longer sexually attracted to you? The ladies also get into trust and communication issues, and what that looks like (if you’re constantly going through your partners’ phones looking for evidence of cheating, either you’ve got a broken boyfriend/girlfriend selector or you’re the one with trust issues. Finally, what does an abusive relationship look like? Kari opens up about her experiences with emotional abuse, and the ladies talk about what different types of abuse can look like. When your partner constantly undermines or gaslights you, or generally treats you like shit, it’s time to go. If your partner ever hits you, it’s time to run away screaming (and get help on your way out, because it can be a dangerous situation). 21 Mar 2018 | Ep 45 - Keeping it Weird in Amsterdam (Part 1) | 00:48:06
After a short hiatus to catch up on new business, Kari and Kelly are back – and have quite a few stories to share from the 2.5 months they’ve been in Amsterdam. Kari goes to Paris and Barcelona with the guy she’s been seeing, and the ladies knock out two bucket list items: seeing a sex show and captaining a boat through the canals. The Gringas get a few visitors, too: Kelly’s friends Sarah and Tim come to visit, and the ladies also play host to Suzannah Weiss, a prolific sex and relationship writer whose work is regularly featured in Glamour, Vice and Bustle, among others. Suzannah is also a digital nomad, coming in hot from Germany, and a member of the Workationing International Girl Squad (IGS). It’s been a long road, but in the last year and a half your gringas have lost — we shit you not — almost 140 pounds. And Kelly has lost over 100 of that on her own.
Both Kari and Kelly are loving this new healthier version of themselves and are proud of everything that they’ve accomplished, however, as they reflect back on the process it’s definitely a little bittersweet. 22 Aug 2017 | Ep 35 – Dear God, Get Us Out of Here! | 00:49:37
The ladies HATE Acapulco, and can’t wait to get out. June was the deadliest month in Acapulco’s history, with 2,234 murders – it’s very murdery out here, and the Gringas are ready to leave. Aside from all the killing that goes on courtesy of the cartel activity in the area, there are other problems. Gabriela the Airbnb host has turned into a Code Red stalker, and has done everything from send a “real estate agent” in to take pics of the house (pre housekeeping service) to text message Kelly every goddamn day. The ladies want to escape Gabriela almost as they want to escape Acapulco. Kelly had a terrifying encounter with a large snake at the pool, and the Gringas are terrified that a bat is going to fly into their condo. Also, there’s a real dog problem in these streets. The ladies talk about a certain (alleged!) scam artist who is working to draw more expats to Acapulco, and his strategy of roaming with his own pack of dogs. Kelly’s noticed this strategy, and has hot tips on how you can maximize the effectiveness of your dog pack (hint: you’re going to need specialists). Having been sick for almost 4 weeks straight, Kari and Kelly have decided to cut their Acapulco trip a few days short and head to San Diego – and the land of drinkable tap water – early. 18 Nov 2019 | Ep 61: Celebrity Encounters, Summiting Utah & a Magical Mystery Birthday Tour | 01:08:18
Workationing has a new Gringa! Ashley Osmond is introduced to the podcast audience as the new co-host. She comes in hot with stories of her appearance as “Kate” on The Celebrity Apprentice and her high-profile family (she’s related to Donny and Marie Osmond).
Kari met Ashley at a friend’s houseboat party in Amsterdam about a year ago, and the ladies became fast friends – and soon to be travel companions (The Workationing Podcast is going to Goa, India!).
An experienced solo traveler, Ashley came into the digital nomad lifestyle by teaching English, and has since moved into remote recruiting work. Her company recently co-hosted an event with the Summit Institute in Utah, and she talks about the value of in-person networking at events.
While Ashley was in Utah, Kari was coordinating a Magical Mystery Birthday tour that took her through 7 countries in 3 days: Turkey, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Switzerland.
The birthday tour ended at a chalet nestled in the French Alps, overlooking Lake Annecy. Heads up: if you’re looking for a party theme that slays on Insta, “Stupid Formal” is where it’s at.
Ashley had to figure out what to do with her dog while she’s in India, and the Workationing Facebook group came through for her in a big way: somebody recommended Trusted Housesitters, and the problem was solved.
Several people in the Workationing group are able to live the digital nomad lifestyle by getting free housing in exchange for watching other people’s pets while the homeowners are out of town. Ashley’s working it the other way

08 Mar 2017 | Ep 9: The Yarlap (AKA: the Gift That Keeps on Giving) | 00:24:20
This is a special episode for the ladies, and the people who love them. The Yarlap is a medical device that strengthens the pelvic floor, and in addition to helping to cure urinary incontinence it may or may not result in some of the best orgasms in your life. The ladies had never seen a contraption like this before, and you probably haven’t either. Before leaving for Workation Kari was given TWO Yarlaps by [REDACTED], one for her and one for Kelly. This episode was originally part of Ep 3 (We Made it to Aguada!), but was edited out because it was a little...off topic and risque. After sharing info about the Yarlap around, however, K&K received so much feedback from their female friends who claim to NEED this device, it was decided this Yarlap episode should see the light of day after all. 26 Apr 2018 | Ep 48 - The Giant Catch-Up, Part I | 01:14:24
Life can come at you fast, and the ladies have been busy with business, expatting to Amsterdam, conferences and travel. In this episode, Kari and Kelly catch you up on what they’ve been up to. There’s some Catskills cabin action (thanks, Jackson!), a long road trip (for Kelly), Kari heads to Cape Town to cage dive with sharks and taste wine in South Africa with her boyfriend (spoiler alert: they break up). The Gringas talk about moving to Amsterdam – Kari spends the holidays there, while Kelly wraps things up in Ohio. There are roving groups of Dutch people in blackface, a disastrous bathroom incident at a New Year’s Eve party and...SO. MUCH. MORE. 11 May 2017 | Ep 22: Floating in an Isolation Tank (Bucket List Item #3) | 00:38:34
The Gringas have learned from their mistake in Medellín, and so they decided to front-load their bucket list item for this leg of Workationing: floating in an isolation tank. What’s it like to float in a black box filled with 93.5º water and 850 pounds of Epsom salt? They’ve always wanted to find out, and they tried it...for the full 90 minutes. Some people hallucinate while floating in isolation tanks, as if they’re on LSD or magic mushrooms. Other people take strokes off of their golf game, come up with complex mathematical theories or even draft entire sections of books while floating. Joe Rogan swears by these isolation tanks – but what will it be like for Kelly and Kari? The ladies found out first hand, and talk about it during this episode – plus their tips for how to make the most out of your floating experience (should you decide to give it a try yourself). Kari even figured out a way to scam an extra 25 minutes of float time, for free! 06 Apr 2017 | Ep 15: The Kate Interview | 00:27:34
Kate Powell is a total badass (she tests virtual reality video games for a living!), and she came to visit the ladies in Medellín for a week. Kate discusses her adventures with starting a nonprofit, spending time in Africa, catching Cholera, bribing state officials and other fun tales of international travel. What does Kate think of Medellín, after having spent a full week here? How does it compare to some of the scarier things she’s experienced while traveling? Does “Workationing” work for her, or is it too difficult to do good work while on the road? Is this what a downward spiral looks like, or are we living our best lives here? 26 Jan 2018 | Ep 44 - Gringas in a Strange Land 2: The Dutch-ening | 00:42:59
Kari and Kelly are settling into their new digs in Amsterdam, and loving life on the canals. However, the culture shock factor is more than they bargained for. It turns out that even outside of Latin America, your girls still feel very much like gringas After finally figuring out that the extremely fancy spot two doors down is actually a gym, Kari and Kelly sign up to work on their fitness. The staff, however, is none too pleased with their insistence on wearing their yoga pants in off the street like animals. Your gringas refuse to be deterred by all the side-eye and get an insanely hot trainer named Jos. They asked for a mean trainer and got a funny one with lots of Dutch sayings to share instead, but Kari and Kelly aren’t even mad. It turns out to be a great fit. The ladies also discuss how tax law and Dutch cheapness are the reason behind the inexplicably steep staircases they keep having to climb. Kelly has some serious concerns about all these babies with no helmets, and Kari is going to take a hostage in a restaurant if someone doesn’t bring her the check soon. 06 Jun 2017 | Ep 26 – Gringas on a Diet: The Hangering | 00:44:38
If there’s one thing Kelly and Kari love, it’s being on a diet – and in Montreal, Canada they’ve decided to get serious about it. Since Workationing started, Kelly is down 50 pounds and Kari’s knocked off 15 – but there’s still a little ways to go before they reach their goal weight. The Gringas are thoroughly enjoying dieting delicacies like raw cauliflower, vitamin gummies and all the eggs they can handle. Kelly can’t stop lunging everywhere, and Kari plans to ride her burpee downtown. The best news about eating so much in Medellín, Colombia is that now they get to P90X their way to buffer bodies. And the ladies can’t wait to BRING IT with their workouts. In their spare time, the ladies plank and think about what kind of infused water they’re going to make for lunch. Kari has dreams of wearing a gold lamé dress, sans Spanx, to a yacht prom. 04 Jul 2018 | Ep 51: Dating in Your 30s (and Beyond) – Welcome to the Thunderdome, Bitch! | 01:49:13
The ladies are finally making good on their promise to talk about relationshit, and in this ep they cover all aspects of dating in your 30s (and beyond). Everything is on the table, incuding exes and sexes, financial differences, dating with (or actively without) kids, sexual compatibility, age gaps and the “what if” relationships that failed along the way. The reality of dating while getting older (wait, is that my biological alarm I hear going off in the not-to-far distance) is hitting the ladies like a speeding tram. Kari and Kelly discuss how Sex and the City wasn’t just a show, but a prophecy, and what that means for them and their friends. The vulnerability level of this episode is off the charts, and the ladies discuss things that many single women in their 30s and 40s think about but rarely talk about. It’s a tough episode, but at least we’ve all got internet therapy to help us cope with it all. Want to try internet therapy for yourself? 24 Feb 2017 | Ep 7: The Angela Keaton Interview | 00:45:18
Angela Keaton of AntiWar.com comes to visit Kelly and Kari in Aguada, and shares some stories of her own travels. There are bike rodeos, sex hotels, road trips to Canada, run ins with Portuguese law enforcement, and weird foods that may or may not be accompanied by creamy sauces. Angela also gets into what it’s like to travel alone and how she learned to trust her gut when it comes to personal safety. Sometimes, being polite and rational can be dangerous! Now that she’s spent a full week with us on Workation, what’s Angela think of what we’re doing here? Does workationing actually work for her? Is this what a downward spiral looks like, or are we living our best lives here? And what did she think of swimming in the bio bay? 30 Mar 2017 | Ep 14: Finding Fixers in Medellin | 00:50:03
The last two fixers Kari and Kelly had (in the Puerto Rico leg of Workationing) were imported friends from the United States – but how will the ladies find fixers in Colombia? In this episode, Kari and Kelly talk about their two main fixers in Medellín, including how they found the fixers and what these fixers have done for them. Mauricio and Santiago saved the day a few times, and are helping keep the ladies safe as they traverse unfamiliar territory in South America. From sourcing mic cords for the podcast rig to supplying sparkling wine (delivered!) for a brunch full of female digital nomads, these gentlemen made life on the road MUCH easier for the Gringas. In several situations, Santiago was particularly helpful – including steering the ladies away from certain danger with a cartel or two, and dropping his dinner plans to come to their rescue at a restaurant. 18 Aug 2017 | Ep 34 – Cartel Country 2: Gringas in Acapulco | 01:02:02
Santiago is back in town (check out the Medellín episodes to get the full story on this character), and he came just in time to see Kari and Kelly through some sort of crazy food poisoning flu situation. Kelly finally Googles Acapulco, which – turns out – is the most dangerous city in Mexico, and has been since 2012. The ladies talk about some of the cartel activity that occurs in the Pearl of the Pacific, including: assassinations via jet ski, multiple heads on pikes outside of government buildings and shooting tourists in the streets, among many other horrific events that have recently occurred. The Gringas are happy that they’ve imported a fixer for this leg, because Acapulco is an incredibly dangerous place. It’s not just not up to code, it’s not a place two ladies should be Workationing alone. Toward the end of the episode, the ladies take a detour to talk about what it’s like to lose weight around men – and hear their opinions on related matters. It’s a fun feminist rant that many listeners are likely to identify with. 20 Mar 2017 | Ep 12: Sampling Local Delicacies: Tripe and Blood Sausage | 00:20:55
Kari and Kelly sample some of the local delicacies in Medellin, Colombia. Specifically, tripe (cow stomach) and blood sausage, prepared by a nearby authentic Colombian restaurant. Overall, the food in Medellin has been amazing, but will the ladies enjoy this particular cuisine? Early signs point to no. 16 May 2017 | Ep 23: Living Intentionally – What’s it Mean, and How Do You Do It? | 00:50:15
Intentional living has been a primary focus for Kari and Kelly throughout the whole Workationing process – dating back to the very beginning, when they first decided to become digital nomads in the first place. In this episode, the ladies talk about the 5 Ws of living intentionally (which they stole from a journalism club in high school). Who is your life right now, and do they belong there? What are you doing, and are you happy about it? When is the right time, if not now (note: there will NEVER be a “right time” to do just about anything). Where do you live, and did you pick that place or just sort of end up there? Add a solid dose of “why” to all of the above, and you’re well on your way to living intentionally. The ladies see intentional living play out in all kinds of different ways, based on what individuals prefer. For example, in ethnically non-monogamous relationships (polyamory, anyone?). Cohousing, sustainable living, intentional communities and ethically sourced food are just some of the benefits of living intentionally. Hell, you can even get your minimalism on – which both Kelly and Kari highly recommend. There’s also a check-in with your Gringas re: how all of this intentional living is working out for them so far. The changes have been noticeable, varied and sometimes unexpected. It’s definitely not all fun! To follow along in real time, see video/pics of the process, get Workationing tips and travel hacks, check out www.workationing.com. 08 Sep 2017 | Ep 37 – Workationing’s 6-month Recap and Reflection | 00:46:23
It’s been a year since Kari and Kelly decided to embark on the adventure that became Workationing, and six months since they’ve been on the road. It’s been quite a trip so far, and now that the ladies have been “out here” on the road for a while, they’re wondering why it took so long to make the jump.
In the beginning, it seemed like all of the barriers to entry into this digital nomad travel lifestyle were insurmountable. However, as the ladies learned, once you take the first step and get some momentum it becomes easier to keep plowing forward.
Whether that plowing forward translates to visiting every continent on earth, starting your own business or anything else that you can imagine, the journey always begins with a single step forward. How long have you been thinking about it, and waiting to take that first step?
Living intentionally has transformed Kari and Kelly’s lives in ways they never expected. Minimalism has become a focal point, and maintaining focus on what really matters is becoming easier and easier throughout the process. There’s been a lot of work done, internally, by both of the Gringas.
In just six months, Workationing has taken the Gringas places they never imagined – including Fast Company, Glamour, USA Today and Women’s Health. In less than half a year they’ve accomplished goals and knocked out six bucket list items, and together they’re down almost 100 pounds. Still, there’s a lot more to go for Kelly and Kari, including burying their dear friend Dom in the desert.

22 Feb 2017 | Ep 6: Where We Went Wrong (and Right) – Lessons Learned from the Road | 00:47:26
Kelly and Kari have learned A LOT on this leg of Workation – including the fact that they made a lot of mistakes along the way and didn’t realize it until it was almost too late. Did they witness a gang fight on horses? How safe were they, actually, in Puerto Rico? The ladies learned the hard way that you should always Google street view not just the outside of your Airbnb, but also where you’ll be walking regularly. What do those “steps to the beach” look like, and how many wild dogs will you encounter on your trek? More best practices and tips for finding safe and enjoyable Airbnbs are covered, as well. Kelly tells a horrifying story about getting into a sketchy Uber, and what that taught her about getting out of bad situations before they get worse. Despite all of the mistakes that Kelly and Kari made on this leg of the trip, they did do some things right – including hitting their personal and professional goals, and knocking out a bucket list item. That bucket list item, by the way, is swimming in one of the only bioluminescent bays in the world. Kari and Kelly talk about what it was like to swim in water that twinkled and glowed around them, and give helpful advice on how to have the best bio bay experience (and who to call!). More info about the bio bay, what it was like, and how to experience it the max can be viewed at this blog post: workationing.com/puerto-rico-bioluminescent-bay/ To follow along in real time, see video/pics of the process, get Workationing tips and travel hacks, check out www.workationing.com. 22 Jun 2017 | Ep 27 – We Made it to Montreal! | 00:45:52
Kari has her car back for this leg of Workationing, and the ladies made it through Vermont, across the Canadian border and into their Airbnb in the Pointe St. Charles area of Montreal. Approximately a third of the way through the gentrification process, this neighborhood is about as diverse as they come. Plus, Jock is in town – the Gringas first met him in Medellin, and he randomly happens to be staying in Montreal for business. Fancy cars intermingle with crackie looking homeless people in the Pointe St. Charles neighborhood of Montreal. All the signs are in French and the local corner store looks like it’s recently been looted. The opioid crisis is clearly not isolated to America, and the situation is looking a little crackie. Still, this all feels a lot safer than Medellin, Colombia. The situation in Montreal felt so safe, in fact, that the ladies split up for the first time since starting Workationing in January. Kari drove down to Boston for the New England Cannabis Convention and Marijuana Policy Project fundraiser, and Kelly stayed in Montreal to go to a queer dance. Fun and shenanigans were had by all. The ladies talk about finding and/or creating an intentional community of travelers to tour the world (and split costs!) with, and talk about how their friendships with other digital nomads are different than some of their older friendships. Life on the road is definitely a lot different than life back at home. Overall Montreal is a beautiful city with terrible weather, and the ladies are impatiently waiting for summer to arrive. In the meantime, Kari and Kelly have been sampling the local How was their border crossing, and how long did it take? How many parking tickets is too many in Canada? 22 Feb 2017 | Ep 3: We Made it to Aguada, Puerto Rico! | 00:50:52
Kari and Kelly discuss saying goodbye, getting on planes, having at least (1) existential crisis...all from Aguada, Puerto Rico! After five months of planning, it’s finally happened: Workation 2017 has begun. 26 Mar 2018 | Ep 47 - The Suzannah Weiss Interview | 00:33:00
As usual, the gringas are actively recruiting for the International Girl Squad, and in this episode Kelly is talking to writer and fellow digital nomad, Suzannah Weiss. Suzannah is a contributing editor for Complex and Teen Vogue, and her writing has been featured everywhere from Glamour to Vice to The Washington Post. Suzannah’s writing has taken her all over the world as she explores questions of sexuality. She’s done everything from go to clothing optional resorts to orgasmic meditation classes, and she’s currently working on a book to talk about everything she’s learned. Kelly and Suzannah talk about everything from feminism to crazy travel stories. It’s been a while since the gringas have done an interview, and this is a fun one! 02 Jun 2017 | Ep 25: Kari’s Birthday & Favorite Place in the World | 00:29:40
It’s Kari’s birthday, and the ladies are spending the time at the world famous Indian Head Resort in beautiful Lincoln, New Hampshire. Kari often says that it’s entirely possible that she’s going to travel the world looking for the perfect place to live, only to end up back in Lincoln. Kari is VERY excited to tell the listeners about Lincoln. Lincoln is like the land that time forgot and has a bit of everything: trained bears, dinners on trains, moose watching, skiing, rock climbing, an ice castle, farmer’s markets, a beer festival, and, of course, the Indian Head rock formation. But the real gem of the town is the world famous Indian Head Resort, right by the scene of “The Incident.” If you’ve ever seen Dirty Dancing and wished that you, too, could have the time of your life, and the world famous Indian Head Resort is for you. There are vintage tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs, a killer view of Indian Head rock, and chits that you REALLY don’t want to lose (there are some problems that Jeff at the front desk can’t even solve for you). “The Incident” took place right in front of the Indian Head Resort, and is the first encounter of the third kind to be recorded by authorities. Betty and Barney Hill claimed to be abducted by aliens in Lincoln while on their way back from vacation in Montreal. Now, they have a historic marker to commemorate their weirdness. Kelly and Kari talk about The Incident, and what makes Betty Hill a grifter worth admiring. 25 Apr 2017 | Ep 19: Where We Went Wrong (and Right) – Lessons Learned from Medellín | 00:52:01
The Gringas made a few mistakes in Medellín, starting before they even arrived. Turns out, the strategies you use to pick a sweet Airbnb in the U.S. are NOT the same that you want to use in Colombia. Kelly and Kari give tips on how to avoid ending up in a filing cabinet full of sex tourists. The ladies also talk about confirmation bias in research, and reiterate the importance of checking the byline on travel articles. Also, you might want to make sure you understand the exchange rate before you start spending foreign cash. The most important lesson the ladies learned on this leg of Workationing was to not put off the bucket list items – because you don’t know if (or when) you’ll have another opportunity to cross them off. It wasn’t all bad, though – your Gringas did do some things right, including finding a place with a rooftop pool, in an area packed with other digital nomads. Medellín is what made Kelly and Kari feel like “real” travelers, and if they can make it out of Colombia alive there’s probably nothing they can’t do. 03 May 2017 | Ep 20: Kicking Our Bucket Lists | 00:50:24
Coming in hot from a long layover at the Fort Lauderdale Delta Sky Club lounge, the ladies are so relieved to be out of Medellín they’ve decided to refocus on their bucket lists. When you start living more intentionally, you find more time to handle the important things – like crossing items off of your bucket list. But before you can do that, you’ve got to figure out what’s on that bucket list in the first place. Kari and Kelly wrote out their bucket lists, and in this episode they talk about all (or many) of the things they really want to do before they die. From going on The Price is Right to jumping off of a yacht into an ocean, a wide variety of weirdness is covered and a lot of it is highly specific. Can you help the Gringas with any of their bucket list items? If so, send us a message via Facebook!
