Welcome to the Work It Like A Mum Podcast.

In this space, everyone is invited to pull up a seat, where we get into honest, refreshing and eye-opening conversations about what it really means to be a working mum and the beautiful, messy lessons that come with it.

I'm Elizabeth Willetts, and I'm obsessed with helping as many women as possible achieve their boldest dreams after kids and helping you to navigate this messy AND magical season of life.

Like you, I’m a working mum who

  • Cleans Weetabix off the walls.
  • Wrestles to get my daughter dressed before nursery
  • Is always the last one to arrive at school
  • Makes three different versions of dinner to accommodate my fussy kids (and for someone who hates cooking, that’s a big ask!)

And

I love my kids more than life itself.

I've got over 17 years of Recruitment experience and am the Founder of the Investing in Women Job Board. But not too long ago, I was at a crossroads with my own career. After being made redundant during the height of the pandemic and the subsequent struggle to find another part-time job at my level, I almost gave up on my career dreams.

But after seeing too many of my friends sidelined at work for wanting flexibility, I knew I had to play my part in addressing the inequalities that still exist in our working world. By highlighting to Employers the positives, a flexible workforce can bring and helping as many people as possible find professional and rewarding part-time and flexible jobs that bring them joy.

But we can't be what we can't see, so in this show, I'm honoured to be chatting with remarkable women redefining our working world across all areas of business. They'll share their secrets on how they've achieved extraordinary success after children, set boundaries and balance, challenges they've faced (and how they've overcome them) to define their own versions of success.

Shy away from the real talk? No way! Money, struggles, growth, loss, boundaries and balance - we cover it all!

Think of this as coffee with your mates, mixed with an inspiring Ted Talk sprinkled with the career advice you wish you'd really had at school!

Every episode is brimming with ideas, tools, hints and tips you can put straight into practice so you, too, can have a career you adore. If it helps you achieve your dreams, we'll cover it - with raw honesty and a few laughs to ensure you are seen, heard, promoted and hired - whilst keeping your sanity at home!

So grab a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine), make sure you're cosy and get ready to get inspired and chase your boldest dreams, or just survive Mondays.

This is the Work It Like A Mum Podcast.

05 Oct 2022What to Say When You’re Asked to Work for Free for ‘Exposure’... Plus More Advice From the Fabulous and Funny Tova Leigh - Star of Facebook, Instagram and TikTok00:34:45

Listen to a bonus Work It Like A Mum Podcast Episode of a previous Facebook/LinkedIn Live recording where Elizabeth chatted with the fabulous, funny and friendly Tova Leigh - star of Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Tova grew up in Israel and trained as a lawyer but had a career and life pivot in her early 30s and moved to London to become an actress. She met her now-husband, and they have three children together, and Tova regularly blogs about her family and gender issues.

Tova tells Elizabeth about her childhood and why she decided to become an actress. She talks about her first few difficult years starting out in acting and how she found work by writing and directing her own independent films. She also talks about her journey into motherhood and how she coped with the pressure of being a new mother by venting her emotions on Facebook.

Elizabeth and Tova touch on some of the complex issues that women have to deal with in today’s society, from online hate to violence to gender stereotypes. Tova shares her thoughts on one of her personal bugbears, being asked to work for free ‘for exposure’ or because people assume that as she loves her work, she would be willing to do it for free. She lists her book recommendations and offers advice to women starting out in business.

This is a really fun, engaging interview that’ll light up your day.

05 Oct 2022Why Society Makes You Feel Like You Are Failing and What to Do About It.00:36:52

Motherhood can feel like an endless treadmill of meals, cooking, washing, ironing, being available to our children 24/7 and balancing it all around having a job, yet we’re not allowed to complain about it.

In this special Work It Like A Mum podcast episode of a recording of a live chat streamed on Facebook and LinkedIn, Elizabeth invites coach Lucy Higgins to talk about the ‘perfect mother’ myth and how it supports a patriarchal view of women. She explains why the ‘perfect mother’ myth is damaging and then encourages us to push back so that we can be the mothers that we want to be.

Lucy gives her wishlist of the support that she’d like to see for mothers in society and outlines her vision of how women should be at the centre of motherhood, not their children. She lists the changes that we can put in place in our own lives and calls on us to talk big, not small so that we can make motherhood more authentic and manageable. At the end of the chat, Lucy shares where you can go online to find more support and resources to start your transition away from being a ‘perfect mother’.

If you enjoyed this chat and want to support the mothers in your network, share this episode and follow Elizabeth for more honest, raw interviews with guests who want to improve women’s lives.

19 Oct 2022"I knew I was bringing a baby boy into the world where adult versions of this child were being murdered on the streets by people meant to protect them."00:45:46

When Gillian Boateng found out she was expecting a son the same week of George Floyd's murder, she experienced a whole range of emotions.

Whilst delighted she was having a healthy child, as the mother, Gillian was scared.   Scared, she couldn't protect her son - a black boy, where adult versions of her child were being murdered on the street by the people meant to protect them.

In this week's thought-provoking episode, we are delighted to chat with the genuinely inspiring lawyer and DEI advocate Gillian Boateng.

As well as talking about race, Gillian offers advice to any parents nervous about rejoining the workforce after parental leave, becoming a LinkedIn Creator, being one of the only Black children at her private school, qualifying as a lawyer, and balancing her work and family life.

Gillian shares fantastic insights about why you don’t always need a role model to achieve your dreams. She gives her perspective on how careers in law are gradually evolving and what that means for her family life and work-life balance. Listen out for her thoughts on what parents can give their kids beyond material gifts and money, which is all the more relevant in these times of a turbulent economy and stretched household budgets.

26 Oct 2022Changing the Conversation Around Flexible Working with Ursula Tanvender00:48:01

The benefits of flexible working are clear. It helps employees balance their work and home lives, leading to greater productivity, improved employee retention, and higher morale. But while some companies are beginning to offer flexible working arrangements as an employee benefit, many still resist or ignore the need for change.

Many organisations still view flexible working as “something for women” or that it encourages people to slack off at work (even though studies have shown no link between productivity and time spent in the office). And many employers who have flexible working policies still only offer them to women returning from maternity leave – not as a way to help workers better manage their lives outside work environments.

While many employees are looking for this type of flexibility, many businesses are still reluctant to adopt it for their employees. But why? And what steps can we take to welcome this conversation?

In today’s episode, we are joined by Ursula Tanvender, the joint CEO at Flexpo. Flexpo is a company on a mission to change the world of work for everyone by making flexible working easier for organisations, people leaders, and teams so that one day, no one will be excluded from career opportunities because of a lack of flexibility.

We are chatting about why Ursula is so passionate about flexible working, working in a job share as a joint CEO, and her entrepreneurial journey to date.

03 Nov 2022If You’re Facing Single Parenthood, Listen to This...00:41:34

Working from home is an ideal situation for many freelancers and entrepreneurs. But it can be tough to juggle everything when your life changes dramatically. It can be even harder if you're in the middle of a divorce or have just had a child diagnosed with autism – both of which today’s guest, Claire Deacon, has experienced.

As a single mum, you may struggle to keep up with your workload, find quality time for yourself and your family, and maintain a sense of stability in your life. This episode is for you if you’re facing any of these challenges!

Claire joins us to talk about entrepreneurship after becoming a mum, parenting a child with autism, freelancing, and the businesses she has set up, including helping those going through a divorce, something she has experienced first-hand.

If you are facing single parenthood, have had a child recently diagnosed with autism or are considering a career in freelancing, this episode is for you.

Notable Quotes

●  I would recommend having an accountant if you go down that (freelancing) route.

●  You can't always tell a child has autism until they are about nine or ten.

●  I talk to Oscar very much in bullet points because, again, with autism, some children can't hear 100 words. They just pick out the salient points.

●  My support network has always been my friends.

●  I used to wash cars when I was 11, you know, and get money for it. I'm very resourceful. I just will never, ever, ever give up or lie in bed all day.

10 Nov 2022Why Has Society Ignored Women’s Postpartum Needs for So Long?00:41:25

Why has society ignored women’s postpartum needs for so long? On this episode of the Work It Like A Mum podcast, Liz talks to Meg Murray-Jones, the founder of Postpartum Plan, a business set up to help women to regain their mental and physical well-being through their fourth trimester and beyond.

Meg shares her own career path with Liz and explains how it led her to creating Postpartum Plan. You’ll hear about the range of packages provided by Postpartum Plan and about the B2C and B2B options they offer, which might be a far better gift for a new mum than a noisy rattle or a too-small babygrow! At the end of the episode, Meg gives some thoughtful words of wisdom for mums-to-be and mums who are struggling to balance the demands of work and family life.

26 Jan 2023What Do Women Really Want from their Careers? And Why This Academic Research May Surprise You...00:39:25

In this week’s podcast episode, Elizabeth chats with Penny Dick, an academic at Sheffield University, and Emma Shute, a coach with Women to Work, a small business that runs workshops and one-to-ones for primarily women within organisations.

Penny and Emma recently collaborated on a study where they interviewed 28 women over a three-year period to learn about their feelings about their lives and careers - and whether their experiences align with academic research on the topic. Elizabeth is eager to hear more about the insights they gained from these conversations.

Penny has worked with Emma and Emma's business partner, Jenny, for over 20 years on various projects. When Penny presented a critical perspective on some aspects of academic literature at a University Seminar that resonated with Jenny and Emma, they decided they wanted to explore women and careers further.

Penny, Emma, and Jenny had extended conversations over the years about how the feminist and academic literature on women's careers did not align with their own experiences and those of other women they had met.

Penny is in the process of producing academic publications from the research conducted with Emma and Jenny. They have written an article that will be published in January and also formed a community of practice from the research. This group includes some women who participated in the research and others who have joined since. The goal is to spread the message that what women actually want from work may not align with societal expectations and to find ways to communicate the skills and value of women and the work they do to organisations and others in a more structured and academic way. Please stay tuned to get more insight.

02 Feb 2023'I signed the biggest contract of my career the week we went into lockdown - just as our adoption had been approved!'00:54:04

Join Elizabeth Willetts for this episode of the Work It Like A Mum podcast as she chats with Jen Smollett, a professional leadership coach. They’ll be chatting about authenticity and why being more authentic at home and work is essential for professional success AND personal well-being. They cover becoming an adoptive parent and how Jen made the mother of all career pivots to build her coaching business from scratch.

Jen went to drama school for a year, completing a foundation degree in London. After completing her foundation year, she realised her talent wasn't as exceptional as she thought and found it difficult to keep up with her peers. This was a hard pill to swallow.

After returning home, Jen decided to pursue a career in nursing, but after a few years of nursing, she realised this was no longer the path she wanted to take. She quit her job and pursued professional leadership coaching. Coaching aligns with Jen's desire to help others and allows her to use her skills and experience to empower others to reach their full potential. And this is a business she still runs today.

During the pandemic, Jen and her partner Melanie adopted two children. Jen shares her journey into parenthood and how she balances her business and family responsibilities.

She advises anyone looking to launch a business while raising small children to manage their expectations and to be kind to themselves. Jen emphasises the importance of understanding and not beating oneself up if things don't go as planned. She suggests taking it one step at a time and not expecting to achieve everything in the first week. Stay tuned to learn more about Jen's insights on balancing business and parenthood.

09 Mar 2023How This Mother Took Her Employer to an Employment Tribunal - Without Legal Representation - And Won a Whopping £60,000 in Compensation00:58:28

When Donna Patterson disclosed her pregnancy to her employer, she expected to receive support. What she got was a dismissive response.

Throughout her pregnancy, Donna faced workplace discrimination, and her attempts to resolve the issues were ignored or dismissed.

Eventually, Donna turned to Pregnant Then Screwed for help and, with their guidance, pursued legal action against her employer. Her bravery and perseverance paid off when she won her case at an employment tribunal - without legal representation and was awarded £60,000 in compensation - a significant victory for working mothers everywhere.

Following her experience, Donna founded Let's Talk Work, a service that provides support and advice to individuals facing difficult situations at work. She assists people nationwide, regardless of whether they're considering a tribunal hearing. Her expertise lies in guiding individuals through negotiations with their employers and advising them on effectively communicating their concerns.

If negotiations fail, Donna can offer advice on the best course of action and share her experiences of taking her employer to a tribunal.

Donna aims to empower people by explaining the process of making an employment tribunal claim step-by-step, making information more accessible and understandable. She hopes her work will raise awareness and help others facing similar situations get the support they need.

Today, Elizabeth hosts Donna as they discuss what taking an employer to a tribunal really means and how individuals without the funds for legal assistance can still pursue justice.

05 Apr 2023The Gender Pay Gap and What Happens to Women’s Earnings and Careers After Maternity Leave in the UK, With Emma Raftery-Kenworthy00:36:55

What happens to women's earnings and careers after maternity leave?

We discuss this topic - and more, with Emma Raftery-Kenworth - an experienced Head of Marketing and Passionate Feminist, in today's podcast episode!

According to Emma, when women return to work after maternity leave, they often find that their male counterparts are paid an average of 7% more than them. And due to the cost of childcare, many women leave the workforce, causing a huge economic loss.

One way Emma suggests that businesses can help support working parents is by offering enhanced maternity pay policies. By offering better support for parents, companies can help to reduce the gender pay gap and create a more inclusive workplace.

We discuss Emma's personal experience of returning to work after maternity leave, finding affordable and reliable childcare, negotiating flexible working arrangements and setting boundaries for a healthy work-life balance. As well as Emma's perspective on the gender pay gap in the UK.

If you are preparing to return to work after maternity leave or a career break or are interested in learning about the gender pay gap in the UK, then this episode is perfect for you.

24 May 2023Delegate to Elevate: How Outsourcing Can Boost Your Business, Career and Family Life, with Charlotte Speak00:33:57

In our latest conversation on Work It Like a Mum, host Elizabeth Willetts is joined by Charlotte Speak, the brilliant mind behind Power of the Parent. Charlotte’s game-changing mission? To help organisations change gear and ensure parents don't just get by at work but genuinely flourish.

In this episode, Charlotte opens up about the rollercoaster ride of starting her own business, grappling with the idea of outsourcing and figuring out how to value tasks. Through her candid chat, she wants to reassure you that it's absolutely alright for everyone's journey to look different - and it’s more than okay to lean on others and embrace outsourcing to give your business a much-needed boost.

What Charlotte's story really hammers home is the magic of outsourcing. By passing the baton for tasks like scheduling and podcast editing to skilled people in her team, she's had the freedom to zero in on the bits of her business that need her most. She’s even found a great cleaner to tackle those pesky household chores that kept her from focusing on work at home.

Yes, outsourcing might feel costly, but it’s a smart move if you're looking to run your business smoothly or if you're juggling a jam-packed job while trying to keep a healthy work-life balance. By chucking out the idea of 'perfection' and easing up on the expectations, Charlotte has crafted her own version of success: being present, playing to her strengths and cherishing quality family time.

So, if you feel a tad swamped with the demands of your business or a bustling job, why not consider offloading a few tasks to experts who can help you streamline your day-to-day? Take a leaf out of Charlotte's book and remember it's alright to ask for help.

Finally, remember this gem from Charlotte: success doesn’t come in one shape or size. It's all about defining it in a way that works for you.

Fancy a bit more wisdom from inspiring women like Charlotte? Don’t miss a beat! Subscribe to Work It Like a Mum, leave us a review if you're enjoying the show, and share it with another mum who might need a pick-me-up. Together, we can redefine success, one episode at a time. 23 Nov 2023Resilience Refined: Charlotte Ralph's Inspiring Journey Through Cancer, Motherhood, and Entrepreneurship00:47:51

Ever met a woman who has braved cancer all while carrying a tiny life within her? Charlotte Ralph, a working mum and founder of the personal styling business Chic by Charlotte, happens to be one such amazing lady. Join me—albeit with slightly less clarity on my end due to a microphone mishap, as I sit down with Charlotte, unearthing her inspiring journey from the NHS to establishing her own business, all while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood.

Charlotte's world, once rhythmed with the predictable beats of family life and career, shifted dramatically when she discovered a lump on her neck. Diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma during pregnancy, she faced her ordeal with the kind of bravery that echoes through time. In this episode, Charlotte recounts her battle and the bittersweet joy of welcoming new life while fighting for her own.

Battle-hardened, she shares the poignant experience of bonding with her newborn amidst intensive chemo and the aftermath of a stem cell transplant. This is a story of the power of hope and the will to survive.

The twists and turns of life morphed Charlotte's perspective on planning and routines. We touch upon the evolution of her relationship with her daughter and how it has been shaped by her health issues. The conversation culminates in discussing her recent decision to restart her business - the motivation behind it, the hurdles faced, and the joy of transforming a dream into reality.

So, what does it take to press 'play' on your passions after life hits 'pause'? Charlotte's tale of reawakening her business post-cancer will leave you with a heart full of hope and a mind buzzing with the art of the possible.

Despite the technical glitches on my side, Charlotte's story remains untarnished—a narrative of perseverance, love, and the reclamation of identity beyond illness.  Buckle up for a ride through resilience and the raw beauty of redefining life on your terms. This episode isn't just a story—it's a masterclass in not just surviving but thriving. Tune in, and let's get inspired together.
