The only organization of its kind, the Ring of Keys community is made up of actors, directors, dancers, singers, stage managers, lighting designers, dramaturgs, artistic directors, producers, casting directors, librettists, lyricists, composers, props designers, scenic designers, sound designers, choreographers, costume designers, and production managers who self-identify as lesbian, bisexual, trans, queer, femme, masc, non-binary, and the diversity of genders that queerness contains. They represent 850+ individuals in 40 US cities, Toronto, and London. In addition, Kelley continues to serve as Executive Director of OBIE award-winning The Fire This Time Festival, a platform for early-career Black playwrights, which she founded in 2009. Kelley is also an award-winning playwright (Parity Productions Commission, Sundance IDP Grant Recipient, Atlantic Launch New Play Commission, Sheen Center Fellow, Stein and Liberace Fellow, John Golden Fellow ) whose work has been developed/presented at Atlantic Theater Company, Sheen Center for Thought and Culture, The Fire This Time Festival, Harlem 9, Primary Stages, Project Y, Poetic Theater Productions, Classical Theater of Harlem, Frigid NYC, Planet Connections Theater Festival, The Field, Dixon Place, and Stanford University’s TAPS Program. She was recently named the recipient of 2023 New York Innovative Theater’s prestigious Ellen Steward Award. She was also a 2020 nominee of the prestigious Paul Robeson Award. Kelley has served as a guest lecturer at Yale School for Drama, Stanford University’s Theater Department, and Cal State-Fullerton. Kelley has also held the positions of Programming Associate at The Sheen Center for Thought and Culture and Producing Director at The Billie Holiday Theater. In addition, Kelley is editor of The Fire This Time Festival’s first anthology of plays, published with Bloomsbury UK/Methuen Drama and titled 25 Plays from The Fire This Time Festival, A Decade of Recognition, Resistance, Rebirth and Black Theater. Prior to that, she completed a 5-year run as a standby with Come From Away on Broadway, performing in the show well over 400 times in 5 different roles. Elyssa and Kate met in the acclaimed BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Writing workshop in 2010 and have been writing partners ever since. Their musical BETWEEN THE LINES debuted off Broadway in July 2022 and their musical adaptation of THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak premiered in the UK September 2022. Kate Anderson (she/her) is a songwriter, improv comedian, sketch comedy writer, singer, and voice over actress. She has studied at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade in New York, and performs regularly with her improv team Duran Duran Duran. Kate’s voice can be heard as the “Norwegian Cookie Lady” and “Cat Lady” in Disney’s “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure”. Originally from Charlotte, NC, Kate graduated cum laude with a degree in Music and Creative Writing from Gettysburg College, where she studied classical voice on scholarship at the Sunderman Conservatory. She has been the Creative and Programming Director at 54 Below for the past decade. She has curated or produced over 7,000 shows in this position. Jacobs (she/her) is a Jonathan Larson and Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award-winning composer, lyricist, book writer, and educator. Her stage musicals include TEETH (Playwrights Horizons; co-book/ lyrics by Michael R. Jackson), POP! (Yale Rep, Pittsburgh City Theatre, Studio Theatre; book/lyrics by Maggie-Kate Coleman), ANYTOWN (George Street Playhouse; book by Jim Jack), HARMONY, KANSAS (Diversionary Theatre; book/lyrics by Bill Nelson), ECHO (Musical Theatre Factory), and STELLA AND THE MOON MAN (Sydney Theatre Company/Theatre of Image; with Richard Tulloch & Adrian Kelly). She also contributed music and lyrics to the multi-composer works WITNESSES (California Center for the Arts) and LETTERS TO THE PRESIDENT (Goodspeed Musicals), and penned the screenplay for THE REAL GEMMA JORDAN (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), which she is now adapting into a stage musical with composer-lyricist Rob Rokicki. Episode NotesGuest: Lynne Shankel Guest Bio Lynne Shankel - composer, orchestrator, lyricist, and music supervisor - was the first woman to solely orchestrate a new musical on Broadway, Allegiance. She was music director and arranger for the Broadway production of Crybaby and resident music supervisor for the Tony Award-winning revival of Company, for which she conducted the Grammy-nominated cast album. Other credits as orchestrator and arranger: Altar Boyz, The Extraordinary Ordinary, Annie Live on NBC, Chasing the Song, Life After, Snow Child, Breathe, and many others. Lynne was also music director for the acclaimed 2019 Kennedy Center production of Tommy. As a composer, Lynne's works include Bare the Musical, Red Velvet, HoT, and Perpetual Sunshine and the Ghost Girls. Lynne is also the composer and lyricist of Postcard American Town. When not writing musicals, Madeline enjoys reading, walking in Central Park, and volunteering. She is an active volunteer with Central Synagogue’s unhoused breakfast program and the founder of a 2020 voter registration/Census count initiative for the New York unhoused community. Through the pandemic, Madeline has worked with NYC Test & Trace Corps to bring mobile vaccine buses and PPE to unhoused New Yorkers. In 2018, Madeline created the Blair School of Music Student Citizen Award given to a female student demonstrating excellence in personal character and contributions to the community. Madeline sits on the Alumni Board of the Vanderbilt University Ingram Scholarship Program, of which she is a proud alumna. After working in the creative department at Jujamcyn Theaters (working on such shows as Kinky Boots, Jersey Boys, The Book of Mormon, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Something Rotten!, two seasons of Encores! at New York City Center, and more), she focused her work on fixing the gender gap in the Broadway industry. She founded SheNYC Arts in 2015 and is eternally grateful to all of the other talented arts workers who have helped it grow and develop since then into a nationwide nonprofit organization that operates in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Dallas-Fort Worth. Outside of SheNYC, most recently she was on the worldwide Production team at Disney Theatrical Group, working on Frozen, The Lion King, and Aladdin around the globe. As a writer, her musicals have run off-Broadway, in Boston, and Chicago; her most recent piece, QUEEN ANNE, was the 2021 recipient of the Brooklyn Arts Council grant for musical theatre. In addition to her work in theater, she was one of the original organizers of the Women's March on Washington and has worked on a number of New York political campaigns, including as the Campaign Manager for Art Chang's 2021 Mayoral run. She was recently featured in Forbes Magazine, was named one of Five Women to Watch as Broadway Returns by Shonda Rhimes' publication, Shondaland, and is on the 2024 Broadway Women's Fund's Women to Watch list. The writer of new British musical The Circle and winner of the Stiles and Drewe Best New Song Prize 2023, Rachel is currently writing songs with Grammy, Emmy and Ivor Novello award winners, The Voice UK and American Idol alumni, and Oscar nominees. Rachel is also a mentor for The GRAMMYs, Help Musicians, and the Ivor Novello Academy. She is also a featured artist for Columbia University’s Songcraft Anthology and an executive member of The Songwriters Hall of Fame. Named a Woman Of The Year 2020, the only British musician to be inducted into the Indie Music Hall Of Fame, and hailed “an inspiration” by Prince Harry, Rachel is the youngest person to be made a Fellow of the London College of Music by Professional Achievement and is one of the British representatives for the World Choir Council.
