30 Sep 2022 From the Vault: Beefdonut (2014) 01:19:04

As many of you know, I lost my voice recently, so I couldn't record as many interviews this week as I usually would. In order to not miss an episode, I decided to re-release one of the "lost" podcasts from 2014 -- an early Witchpolice recording that didn't get added to the current podcast feed.

This one was originally released as #83, featuring Joel "Beefdonut" Klaverkamp as our guest. It was selected based on your social media votes. I hope you dig it. It's in the show's old format, so if you're new to Witchpolice Radio, you're better off listening to a 2022 episode, but if you're looking for a fun throwback, here we are.

Here's what I said about it back in 2014:

This week, Sam and Rob hang out with longtime stalwart of the Winnipeg music scene, Joel Klaverkamp. In addition to 20+ years of work under the name Beefdonut (including an excellent new album), Joel has played with very recognizable names in the city's musical history, including The Hummers, Skingerbreadman ...and the legendary (only to us) band that convinced us DIY music was possible way back in the 90s, Alien Hybrid!

Jon was away for this episode, so we couldn't use our regular studio spot in his basement. This one was recorded in a spot Joel had access to "high above Winnipeg's historic Exchange District," so if you notice an inferior sound quality throughout, it's because we're not on home ice for this one.

Back to your regularly-scheduled content in a few days! Thanks, y'all!

03 Oct 2022 WR729: Natalya 00:24:03

Local reggae/dancehall artist Natalya is on the show to talk about her deadly new single, ‘Don’t Give Up’!

She sat down for a great conversation about reggae in Winnipeg, launching her solo career, roots vs dancehall, and much more.

This one's a little shorter than usual because only the one song is included, but stay tuned for more Natalya releases in future.

This episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company, who have brand new Witchpolice merch in the works! Watch for that!

14 Oct 2022 WR732: Election Special with Natalie Smith and Omar Kinnarath 00:32:22

There’s a municipal election happening, Winnipeg, and as your friendly neighbourhood music podcast, I sat down with a couple of folks from the local music scene who happen to be running for council.

Stay tuned for a great conversation with Omar Kinnarath (who you may remember from local hardcore bands like Intafada and Rogue Nation back in the day), and Natalie Smith (ex-Silence Kit, now in Mulligrub).

As I’ve said in EVERY election-themed show I’ve done over the years, I’m not endorsing either candidate (I’m not in their wards anyway) or anyone else. Please read up on the candidates in your area and vote for whoever best represents you. Just vote.

Note: I say "ridings" instead of "wards" about a billion times on this episode. Oops.

17 Oct 2022 WR733: Ezoman 00:46:28

Fantastic conversation on this episode with rapper/poet/entrepreneur Ezoman!

We talked about changing the perception around hip-hop shows, formally releasing his new album, "Duality," growing as an artist and a person, and much more.

The release party for "Duality" takes place Nov. 5 at Infinity Ultra Lounge and Bar.

Want more Ezoman? Check out his appearance on episode #549 (Dec. 2020).

20 Oct 2022 WR734: Pacman 00:36:56
Rap battles in 2022 are a completely different thing than I remember. I had a very enlightening conversation with Pacman, who has been participating in battles here in Winnipeg and across Canada.

Check out our chat about battling as comedy/performance art rather than a strictly musical pursuit, using rap as a springboard to stand-up comedy and writing, whether there’s a “line” that shouldn’t be crossed when insulting an opponent, and much more!

24 Oct 2022 From the Vault: The Planet Smashers (2014) 01:06:06

Here's another throwback -- a re-release of one of the "lost" podcasts from 2014 -- an early Witchpolice recording that didn't get added to the current podcast feed.

This one was originally released as #73, featuring Matt and Patrick of Montreal ska legends The Planet Smashers as our guests. Ignore what I say in the intro: this was ONE of our early attempts at interviewing an artist from out of town, but not the very first.

I hope you dig it. It's in the show's old format, so if you're new to Witchpolice Radio, you're better off listening to a 2022 episode, but if you're looking for a fun throwback, here we are.

...and yes, that cover image is an accurate depiction of our recording setup back then. We did everything in the jamspace in then-co-host Jon's basement. The dryer in the background was a prominent feature.

Here's what I said about it back in 2014:

This week we talk to Matt and Patrick of the legendary Planet Smashers about their new record, their experiences as a ska band with 20 years of history, and this week's randomly-generated theme word: TERROR.

28 Oct 2022 WR736: Butterfist Funhouse 00:42:41

Great chat with the delightful pizza-loving (they made a concept album about it) weirdos in Butterfist Funhouse.

We talked about the new record, Illegal Oregano: an Italian Drama, songwriting, cannibalism, nebulous genre labels, and much more.

31 Oct 2022 From The Vault: The Zags / Neil Osborne (2014) 01:10:31

Here's one more throwback (the last one for a while) -- a re-release of one of the "lost" podcasts from 2014 -- an early Witchpolice recording that didn't get added to the current podcast feed.

This one was originally released as #80 in June of that year, and features an in-studio interview and performance by local garage rockers The Zags (later to become The Zorgs), as well as a special call-in guest: Neil Osborne of iconic Canadian rockers 54-40!

I hope you dig it. It's in the show's old format, so if you're new to Witchpolice Radio, you're better off listening to a 2022 episode, but if you're looking for a fun throwback, here we are.

Here's what I said about it back in 2014:

This is a full episode! Not only do we have Winnipeg garage-punk weirdos the Zags in-studio for a live performance, but we talk to Neil Osborne —frontman of Canadian rock icons 54-40 — over the phone! 54-40 is currently crowdfunding a brand new record, so we talk to Neil about that and about the band’s 30+ year history. The Zags get animated about this week’s randomly-generated theme word (“hands”), and good times are had by all!

04 Nov 2022 WR738: Matt Foster 00:46:17
You may remember singer-songwriter Matt Foster from such bands as The Crooked Brothers… but have you heard the new solo record, True Needs? (Hint: you really should)

I sat down with Matt for a conversation about the new album, tackling 'horrible' topics in a meaningful way, having a DIY punk rock attitude, reconnecting with technology, and so much more!

Want more Matt? Check out episode #102 from way back in 2014.

07 Nov 2022 WR739: Bicycle Face 00:35:00

It’s the triumphant return of Bicycle Face to the podcast!

I hung out with the mostly non-Christmas joy-pop duo and talked about their upcoming space-themed album, returning from the great Unicycle Face schism, Myrrhvana and Xmas EPs, making music videos with cows, and so much more!

Note: At a few points there's some weird robot-sounding (thematically appropriate, eh?) feedback on one of the BF members' ends of the conversation, but it certainly doesn't take away from the interview at all.

Can't get enough Bicycle Face? Hear them way back on episode 169 (March 2016), and hear the members individually on episodes 500 (Theresa, July 2020) and 533 (Ava, Oct. 2020).

11 Nov 2022 WR740: Kieran West 00:45:37
It’s been a few years since singer-songwriter Kieran West was on the podcast and a lot has changed.

We talked about his upcoming solo record, his new band, Looking Inward — and how fatherhood, sobriety and the pandemic have impacted his songwriting and outlook.

There’s also a bunch of conversation about the lasting appeal of Midwest emo!

14 Nov 2022 WR741: GMB Chomichuk 00:30:35
Acclaimed local graphic novelist GMB Chomichuk is back on the show for the first time in almost a decade!

Stay tuned for a conversation about comics, creating, his desire to collaborate with the local music community, the way the word “Witchpolice” has haunted him for years, and much more.

It’s a fun one, and local musicians are going to want to hear about his ideas for collaboration.

18 Nov 2022 WR742: Matt Pitre a/k/a Jerry Can 00:41:47

Had a good chat on the podcast with Matt Pitre, who you may recognize from metal outfit Book of Ghosts!

We talked about new music from that project, as well as his new hip-hop venture as Jerry Can, upcoming group Neighbours... and much more!

NOTE: Due to an equipment issue, the first three minutes or so of the interview has fairly crappy sound quality (mostly my end of the conversation), but after that, it's fine. Thanks for your patience.

21 Nov 2022 WR743: Ramskull 00:55:02
On this episode, I get heavy with local metal band Ramskull, who are back with a new album, ‘Parasitic Sapiens’!

25 Nov 2022 WR744: Hypernashion 00:48:24

Winnipeg’s Hypernashion has been combining electronic beats, blues/rock guitars, dub reggae and punk rock influences and more for many years, and they’re almost ready to release a new album on their own DIY Hyper Recordz label.

I sat down with three members of the group for a conversation about the collective’s unique sound, combining live instruments with electronic beats, the band’s Polish roots, and much more.

Want more Hypernashion? Hear bandleader Arturo on episode #129 (June 2015) and #163 (Jan. 2016).

28 Nov 2022 WR745: KNG JMZ 00:41:12
This episode features an interesting interview with ‘new’ — but not new to the culture — local hip-hop artist KNG JMZ!

Check out our conversation about navigating the administrative side of music, the way rap has changed, the importance of lyrics, and much more!

Note: as I mention in the intro, I had to use the backup audio for this episode because of a file problem, but it's still absolutely listenable.

02 Dec 2022 WR746: Warped and Creased 00:31:59
I’ve been doing this a while, but I’m not the only long-running music podcaster in this sordid little burg.

The hosts of Warped and Creased have been talking about (and reviewing) extreme metal since 2014!

We had a conversation about podcasting as a lifeline during the pandemic, the ongoing appeal of physical media in this streaming dystopia, an upcoming show they’re presenting (alongside Eye and Ear Control Records) at the Park Theatre, and much more!

05 Dec 2022 WR747: Nick Friesen 00:42:36
Winnipeg’s Nick Friesen is a busy guy these days.

Nick is the artist, animator and songwriter behind cartoon band Olivia Sea, which has expanded to a comic book series, an upcoming graphic novel, and a recent cassette release.

He also recently published a collection of short stories and — via his Jaded & Elated and Inservice Records projects — is putting together a tribute album to ‘90s indie rockers Transistor Sound & Lighting Co.

We talked about all of this and then some. Check it out!

Need more Nick? Hear him on episodes 96 (Oct. 2014) and 154 (Nov. 2015) as a member of Futurekids and on episode 378 (April 2019) as himself.

23 Dec 2022 WR752: Favourite local albums of 2022 part one 01:31:18

It's (almost) the end of the year, so I decided to turn my annual year-end "favourite local albums" list into a podcast!

Here's part one -- numbers six through 15 of my overall top 15 -- in an overstuffed episode that includes clips from interviews with a number of artists who made the list, and much more.

Part two, my top five, will be out next episode.

Part one includes releases by artists like Turn the Gun, Well Sister, Ultra Mega, Jocelyn Gould, The Secret Beach, JayWood, Death Trip, Antonio Mazza, Claire Therese and the Lockdown, and Bicycle Face.

As mentioned in the intro, I'm sure I've missed some great stuff, both on this episode and the next, and there are also a lot of albums I didn't consider for 2022 -- mainly stuff that came out too late this year for me to fully absorb.

Records that came out on streaming this year but have physical copies in 2023 count as "2023" releases as well.

27 Dec 2022 WR753: Favourite local albums of 2022 part two 01:06:30

It's (almost) the end of the year, so I decided to turn my annual year-end "favourite local albums" list into a podcast!

Here's part two -- the top five of my overall top 15 -- in an overstuffed episode that includes clips from interviews with a number of artists who made the list, and much more.

Part one, numbers 6 through 15, can be heard here.

Part two includes releases by KEN mode, Christine Fellows, Age of Self, Jacob Brodovsky, and Scott Nolan.

As mentioned in the intro, I'm sure I've missed some great stuff, both on this episode and the first one, and there are also a lot of albums I didn't consider for 2022 -- mainly stuff that came out too late this year for me to fully absorb.

Local lo-fi power trio Humous just released a new EP — their first entirely in Tagalog after a series of excellent English-language releases.

I sat down with Julius (vocals/bass) and JC (drums) to talk about the EP, their upcoming 10-year anniversary as a band, experimenting with heavier sounds, and much more!

06 Jan 2023 WR756: Twintwa 00:35:09

I sat down with Twintwa's David Fort to talk about returning to Winnipeg for a wild show this Sunday (Jan. 8 at Bevvy Teyems Studio), nostalgic feelings for the Winnipeg airport, performing Twintwa's "deep Earth folk" as a solo act on this trip, and much more.

There's also a very brief chat partway through with Jo Wolfclan (who was nearby when we did the interview). Jo is performing at Sunday's event alongside Twintwa, Eagle Lake Owls, Velveteen, and Kaiti Rieder

Three of the four songs on this episode are from the Bleeding Hearts EP, which is a collaborative project by Twintwa, Forest Her Dress, and Eagle Lake Owls.

They call themselves the oldest band that can be thought of as "emerging artists" — I sat down with four members of Car 287 for a wide-ranging conversation about transitioning from being a cover band to playing original music, finding a place in the local music scene, getting creative during the pandemic, and much more.

I sat down with two members of long-running local “blues on steroids” outfit D.B. and the Deadbeats for a conversation about the band’s dozen years in the scene, trading their amped-up sound for stripped-down acoustic duo gigs during the pandemic, respecting the blues OGs, and much more.

20 Jan 2023 WR760: Lifte 00:43:39
Solo artist Andrew Floyd's latest project, Lifte, is a very personal one.

His raw new cover album, 'Disconnected' — as well as his previous releases of original music — act as an emotional outlet for the experience of being caregiver for his wife, who has primary progressive multiple sclerosis.

We talked about creativity as catharsis, responses to the record from friends and family, sleeping on hospital chairs, connecting with other caregivers and loved ones of MS patients, and much more.

It’s a heavy subject but a really great conversation.

Here's a conversation with members of Fox Lake about releasing an LP during the pandemic, struggling to explain what kind of music they play (is it math rock? Is it Midwest emo? Is it “punk-adjacent”?), remote songwriting with one member living out of province, and much more!

02 Feb 2023 From the Vault: The Watchmen (2014) 00:48:47

Here's a throwback episode -- it's a re-release of one of the "lost" podcasts from 2014 -- an early Witchpolice interview that didn't get added to the current podcast feed.

This one was originally released as episode #77 (the show wasn't even into triple-digits yet!) and featured a phone interview with Sammy Kohn, drummer of iconic Winnipeg rockers The Watchmen.

I hope you dig it. It's in the show's old format, so if you're new to Witchpolice Radio, you're better off listening to a 2023 episode, but if you're looking for a fun throwback, here we are. No apologies for audio quality.

Here's what I said about it back in 2014:

For this week's podcast episode, we tweak the format for an interview with Sammy Kohn, drummer of platinum-selling Canadian rock band The Watchmen. We talk about the upcoming reissue of the band's 1994 classic "In the Trees" and go over some of their history. This week, the guest selects all of the songs.

Back to your regularly-scheduled programming next episode!

06 Feb 2023 WR765: Adele M Wilding 00:44:43
Very interesting conversation on this episode with jazz vocalist/composer/educator Adele M Wilding.

She’s presenting a three-week vocal workshop on African-American spirituals next month at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts, and we discussed the direct throughway from spirituals to all genres of popular music today, aural and oral traditions, the idea of musical “soul”, and much more.

We also got into Adele’s upcoming ‘jazz vespers’ event, and the idea of bringing a jazz trio into a religious setting and reach a wider community.

This episode also includes music from Adele's various projects. Check out her Bandcamp page for more.

14 Feb 2023 WR767: Cec Lopez 00:36:26
Winnipeg singer-songwriter Cec Lopez is out-of-province working on a Master’s degree, but more of the soulful songs of heartbreak that made 2021’s “Canola” EP so memorable are in the works.

Here's a conversation about vocals with presence, Manitoba as home and inspiration, learning the business side of being an independent artist, and much more.

NOTE: As I mention in the intro, my trusty old memory card finally crapped out on me after hundreds of episodes, so this is the backup audio, which means my side of the conversation sounds a little rougher than usual, but it's absolutely still listenable. (I've since acquired a new card, don't worry).

16 Feb 2023 WR768: Ben Reimer 00:46:35
Great conversation with contemporary drum kit specialist Ben Reimer! Really enjoyed this one.

We talked about expanding the horizons of the drum kit into forms of classical music, the melodic playing on his Katana of Choice LP, working with composers, using techniques from genres like metal in symphonic settings (classical blastbeats!) and much more.

01 Mar 2023 WR771: From the Attic 00:18:28
From the Attic’ is a new video series based out of Argyle Studio, featuring some of Winnipeg’s latest and greatest artists!

Here's a quick conversation with the trio behind the project (Cam Loeppky, Mike Requeima and Tom Elvers) about the series’ origins, upcoming episodes, filming b-roll of Winnipeg streets in the dead of winter, and more.

The series already has a couple of episodes out, including performances by the Greg Macpherson Band  and Fold Paper.

08 Mar 2023 WR773: Rob Crooks 00:40:42
The Empire is in Decline and Growing Weaker by the Day’ is the excellent new record by rapper/producer/songwriter Rob Crooks.

We sat down to talk about the album, the political context behind it, making angry, anxious music, and a whole lot more!

Way back in 2012, Rob was one of the original co-hosts of this podcast, so he's on a lot of past episodes, but if you want to hear more of him (as a guest) in recent years, he's on episodes #657 (with Gruf and Yy, Jan. 2022), bonus episode (with Cam Scott, Sept. 2021), and #527 (Oct. 2020).

11 Mar 2023 WR774: The Thrashers 00:34:50
Rumours of The Thrashers' demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Winnipeg’s favourite skateboardin’, garage-rockin’, Transistor 66-in’ power trio is back, briefly, with one last record — their first since 2015.

Well, technically, it's two records in one: the brand new We Are Literally the Thrashers and This is a Pizza Party With the Thrashers EPs, combined into a single slab o' wax!

Here's a conversation about their last hurrah (April 15 at the Park Theatre), their decade and a half as a band, and much more…

With the new tape, ‘The Body Horror’, Matthew Powers (a/k/a Midnight Review Presents) adds to his already stellar catalogue of DIY weirdness.

This one definitely qualifies as ‘music-adjacent’: I talked to Shane from 3D Pro Wrestling and wrestler/podcaster/man-about-town Stefan Richard about the upcoming ‘Protect Ya Neck’ event, March 30 at the Pyramid Cabaret!

In addition to live indie wrestling, local bands Cheap Heat, xMeans to an Endx, and Murder Capital are performing (and I threw a song by each into the episode too)!

This episode is my conversation with Clint Chaboyer about live-streaming local punk and metal bands on Red Tie Live, the upcoming ‘90s tribute show in support of MS Canada (May 5 at The Park Theatre), and much more.

The songs on this episode are from previous charity tribute events -- this year's is the eighth annual -- and are covers by all-star lineups of Winnipeg musicians, with suitably ridiculous band names like 'Nirvan Down By The River', 'Squirrel Jam', and 'Manther'!

15 Apr 2023 WR784: The Watchmen 00:49:23

One of Winnipeg's most successful musical exports to the world is celebrating a milestone.

On this episode, I talked to Sammy Kohn (drums) and Daniel Greaves (vocals) of The Watchmen about the super-deluxe reissue for the 25th anniversary of their landmark 'Silent Radar' LP.

We got into the background of the deluxe edition's 46(!) tracks, the staying power of the band's songs from that era, the CD's pioneering -- for 1998 -- enhanced/online features, and much more.

You can (and should, it's great) check out the comprehensive version of 'Silent Radar' now wherever you stream music.

19 Apr 2023 WR785: Ezoman / Eagle Owl / Tommyphyll / Lil Yardii 00:44:07

This one's a little different. It's part of a series of episodes I'm doing in collaboration with local rapper Ezoman's Creative Side Entertainment for this year's 'Future of M"you"sic' competition, which is a five-month long showcase of up-and-coming local artists at the Limelight

Here's the first episode, which is similar to my old Quick Hits format (remember that?), and it features Ezoman giving some background on the event, plus three of the artists participating in the first stage of the competition on May 25: Eagle Owl, TommyPhyll and Lil Yardii.

The May 25 event also features Cozzymanos, who we weren't able to set up an interview with in time, but one of his tracks is at the end of this episode as well.

We talked about Dr.Rift's conception, focusing more on hooks than technical complexity, getting a band together, playing a first show (with another on May 20), and much more.

We talked about the record — which was inspired by the passing of a close mutual friend — and the discovery of a new musical partnership.

We also got into Connor’s unique journey, which includes a traumatic brain injury that left him temporarily unable to use his right hand (not great for a piano player!) and how that shaped his playing and outlook today.

24 May 2023 WR795: Bros Before Gin 00:48:18

Sean and Todd McGinity are a big part of the local podcasting community in this sordid little burg, as hosts of the SeanGeek and FastFret Podcast, but they’re also musicians.

You may know them from their work in hard rockers Dome, but we sat down for a conversation about The Kitchen Sink by Bros Before Gin — a new collection of unreleased tracks from their various bands over the years, some of which go back decades.

Stay tuned for a chat about the CD, documenting everything, musical family connections -- including an idea for a podcast series they would be fools not to pursue -- and much more!

NOTE: Due to a technical problem with the recording files, my side of the conversation is the backup, audio which means it sounds a little rougher than usual. Still absolutely listenable, but just a heads-up.

Need more from the McGinitys? Hear them on episode #480 (April 2020).

I sat down with Heidi to talk about her book, On The Edge of Greatness, which aims to help young musicians and other creatives get past mental obstacles and accomplish their goals.

Instead of the usual songs I would include in an episode, this one includes audio clips of contributors to the book -- including some of Heidi's music students -- telling their stories.

17 Jun 2023 WR802: Israel Joseph I 00:47:48

I’ve always thought about expanding the scope of the podcast and occasionally interviewing artists with no local connections, but whose music I really love.

…so when the opportunity to talk to Israel Joseph I came up, I jumped at the chance.

Israel is probably best known for his time fronting the greatest band of all time, Bad Brains, on the “Rise” album (1993), but he was also the singer in the great Fireburn and recently released the excellent Meltdown” solo LP.

Check out this conversation about Meltdown's DIY aesthetic, taking inspiration from the youth, defining soul music, the power of hardcore, reggae, and much more! We barely even had time to talk about his experience in Bad Brains, so hopefully we can do a part two down the road.

Want your own copy of Meltdown on vinyl? The best way to do that, especially for those of us here in Canada, is to send Israel a direct message on social media. DIY or die.

Drummer and composer Tetyana Haraschuk is back on the show! We sat down for another great chat about her upcoming EP, experimenting with heavier sounds, the difficulty of defining her psychedelic/jazz/rock/electronic style, and much more!

Need more Tetyana? Check out episodes #630 (Oct. 2021) and #698 (June 2022)

09 Aug 2023 WR817: Pulling Pud 00:33:32

Living proof that dick jokes are alive and well in Portage la Prairie, pop-punk band Pulling Pud have just released the “It Burns When I EP”.

Check out this conversation about the ongoing appeal of the genre, the music scene in Portage, influences from the obvious (NOFX, Blink-182) to the unexpected (black metal, country)… and much more!

12 Aug 2023 WR818: Slow Leaves 00:36:21

On this episode, I sat down for a conversation with singer-songwriter Grant Davidson, a/k/a Slow Leaves.

We talked about the excellent new ‘Meantime’ LP, making modern-sounding music while throwing back to ‘70s vibes, productivity during the pandemic, getting reviewed by goth publications, and much more.

16 Aug 2023 WR819: Ham 00:41:30

Remember psych/noise/prog/post-rock/etc. outfit Ham?

They’re back — from various corners of the continent — for a pair of reunion shows later this month (Aug. 18 at The Goodwill with Mahogany Frog and Aug. 19 at Rainbow Trout)!

I sat down with Paul Lafreniere (guitar/vocals) to talk about getting back into Ham-mode, defining the band’s weirdo sound, opening for the Pixies almost 20 years ago… and more.

19 Aug 2023 WR820: Orvis 00:43:57

Singer-songwriter Orvis Thomas -- known mononymously as simply Orvis as far as his music is concerned -- sat down for an interview days after the release of (the second version of) his new ‘Love in Vain’ solo EP!

Check out our conversation about the record, playing country covers, notebooks of songs going back 20+ years, getting into music in a remote northern community, and much more.

Need more Orvis? Hear a micro-interview with him on episode #576 (March 2021).

23 Aug 2023 WR821: The GentleFolk 00:37:33

Summer in Manitoba is festival madness, and one of the events coming soon is GentleFest, Aug. 25-27 at Ignite Retreats in the Interlake!

I talked to Zach Van Der Hooft of organizing team The GentleFolk about the festival’s roots in campground animations, its connection to a local shitposting forum, building a DIY community, and much more!

This year’s GentleFest features artists like Ami Cheon, Vikings, a Sebastian Owl reunion, and a number of past Witchpolice interviewees, including Stiff Wiggle, Freddy and the Fire Nation, Lounge FM, Shay Wolf (each of whom appear on this episode in song form), Paper Machetes, and Gladly!

26 Aug 2023 WR822: The Benefits 00:39:12

Winnipeg’s The Benefits might be borderline un-Googlable, but big things are going down in their universe.

I sat down with the duo of Snarky Remarkable and Jomaha Nebraska to talk about their new (but also very old) single, expanding to a full band, comedy music (and musical comedy), parody songs, and more!

Note: Due to technical difficulties, the audio for about half of the interview is from my backup recording, which is lower quality (especially on my end of the conversation), but it's still listenable, and fixes itself partway through the episode. Thanks for yer patience.

30 Aug 2023 WR823 Nova / Koziithegoat / SincerelyT / Knathan 00:43:14

This one's a little different. It's part of a series of episodes I'm doing in collaboration with local rapper Ezoman's Creative Side Entertainment for this year's 'Future of M"you"sic' competition, which is a five-month long showcase of up-and-coming local artists at the Limelight.

Here's the fourth episode, which is similar to my old Quick Hits format (remember that?), and it features a clip of Ezoman giving some background on the event, plus interviews with four of the artists who are participating in the August event: Koziithegoat, Nova, SincerelyT, and Knathan

I wasn't able to hook up interviews with the other two -- Mezziisgone and Forevr Brwn -- but I've included a song featuring both of them at the end.

02 Sep 2023 WR824: JayWood 00:47:41

The good news: JayWood just released a new EP. The bad news (for Winnipeg): he’s skipping town!

Jeremy Haywood-Smith was back on the podcast to talk about decamping to Montreal, the ‘Grow On’ EP as an extension of 2022’s acclaimed ‘Slingshot’ long-player, and much more.

Need more JayWood in your life? Check out our previous interviews on episodes #308 (Aug. 2018), #589 (May 2021), and #708 (July 2022).

06 Sep 2023 WR825: Mulligrub 00:35:18

After a few years on hiatus, Winnipeg ‘tweemo’ trio Mulligrub are back with a new bass player and their long-awaited sophomore album, ‘Tragical’! (It's really grubbin' good, too!)

Stay tuned for a conversation about new (and also old) sounds, sad songs, reaching new audiences, and much more!

09 Sep 2023 WR826: EzRa 00:36:17

We're back in Morden (virtually) for a conversation with pop-punk solo act Garry "EzRa" Doell!

Check out a conversation about growing up listening to punk/hardcore/metal of the Christian variety, the neverending quest to find bandmates in a small community, performing at the Corn & Apple Festival (and getting a high-profile shoutout), new music, and much more!

13 Sep 2023 WR827: Trío Telfær 01:00:04

As regular listeners know, I like weird shit, and long-running Winnipeg experimentalists Trío Telfær certainly fit that description!

I had a conversation with Corey and Brian about their process of improvisation, being ideologically — but not necessarily sonically — a “jazz” group, their other gigs backing up high-profile locals (i.e. Amos the Kid, Boy Golden, and others), their deep catalogue and upcoming release, and much more!
