19 May 2020Julia Kent on the Emotional Needs of Readers, Writing Ahead, and Opportunities in Audio01:11:48

Episode 018 / Romantic comedy author Julia Kent joined us this week to discuss the value of meeting the emotional needs of readers, plus nuts-and-bolts details on writing ahead, audiobooks, and translations.

Jami and Sara recorded a video workshop of what they wish they’d known for the Stay Home Story Summit, which is free and there’s no up-sale. Just great info on craft and promotion. Videos start May 18. Registration closes May 25, 2020.

In the intro, Sara talks about she’s started a German translation through Reedsy. Jami’s new book Homecoming King launched with a big splash--breaking into the top 100 of the Amazon store, then going all the way to number 81!

In this podcast episode, you’ll discover:

Things to Consider Before You Launch:

  • KU or wide - weigh pros and cons of each
  • Price point - consider typical price of genre and goals to pick the best price point (99 cents can generate preorders and sales while a higher price point give you a higher royalty and the option of dropping it for sales later)
  • Preorders - a preorder lets you capture sales and get your sales pages live on the vendors, but some authors won’t do preorders because they feel Amazon doesn’t weight the preorder sales as heavily as purchases/borrows made after the books releases, which may impact rank.
  • Don’t forget the impact of your newsletter to launch

01 Dec 2020Ricardo Fayet on How Authors can use Reedsy00:48:52

Episode 046 / Founder of Reedsy and soon-to-be published author, Ricardo Fayet joins us to talk about how authors can work with Reedsy to find freelancers, get their books in front of reviewers, and find translators. We also touch on simple ways to improve your sales pages and reach international readers.

Intro recap:

Sara talked about what she’d learned from launching a special edition hardcover: 1) you need a long lead time so you don’t have to pay expedited shipping on the books, and 2) set up a sign-up page first to find out if anyone is interested, then set up a sales page with a “pre-order” before ordering the books from IngramSpark. Sara did the sign-up, but not the sales page and she’d do both if she does it again. Sara’s a founding author at BingeBooks, which recently launched. It’s a bookish site for readers to discover new books, keep track of books they’re reading, and connect with authors. They have a waiting list for authors who would like to claim their profile.

Jami’s 99 cent sale is running and she’s directing clicks to her series page, which is one of David Gaughran’s recommendations for good conversions. Jami gives the tactic a thumbs up. Jami’s also running ads on Facebook and Bookbub.

Come over and say hi to Jami and Sara in the WIKT Facebook group! You can find show notes and links at wishidknownforwriters.com.

In this podcast episode, you’ll discover:

  • How Ricardo came to create Reedsy, a marketplace to connect writers and freelancers
  • Ricardo’s advice for authors who don’t like Facebook
  • The difference between having an advertising presence and an organic presence on a social media site

11 Feb 2020Advantages of Being a Part-Time Writer with Nathan Van Coops00:55:13

Alternate history and time travel author Nathan Van Coops was a trooper and joined Jami Albight and Sara Rosett despite having a cold. They delve into the joys of being a part-time writer and creating the lifestyle you want as well as tips on mistakes involving doing a royalty share for a Book One and trying to juggle too many things. And, last, they laugh about Jami's lunch choices and geek out about plotting books.

There's a bit of lag in the opening when Sara's talking about the sequel to Knives Out and how Benoit Blanc is a perfect flat-arc character and provides an ideal set-up for a long-running episodic series.

The flu hit Jami's family and interrupted her writing week, but everyone is better and she'd back at the keyboard now.

Nathan, Jami, and Sara discuss:

-How Nathan carved a new entrepreneurial path and created a lifestyle that blends art and aviation

-Living the life you want, which for Nathan means being able to wear flip flops to work

-Influence of children’s adventure book, The Neverending Story

-Advantages of being a part-time author: a financial safety net, reduced mental strain, and creative freedom

-Risk evaluation for indie authors

-How not all jobs are “soul-sucking” and you can love traditional employment and be a writer at the same time

-Writing a book in snatches of 15 to 20 minutes

-Why doing a royalty share on a Book One was a mistake

-Why trying to juggle too many things is a mistake

-Mindset and how to keep a healthy attitude

-The benefits of preorders

-Changes in the publishing industry, including pricing higher and how that can help you find new readers

-How understanding his love of adventures stories helps Nathan write satisfying books for his readers

-How finding your overarching brand draws readers to you as an author

-Sara and Nathan geek out about plotting and plotting resources

Genres discussed include time travel, alternate history, romance and mystery.

Show notes:

  • KU or wide - weigh pros and cons of each
  • Price point - consider typical price of genre and goals to pick the best price point (99 cents can generate preorders and sales while a higher price point give you a higher royalty and the option of dropping it for sales later)
  • Preorders - a preorder lets you capture sales and get your sales pages live on the vendors, but some authors won’t do preorders because they feel Amazon doesn’t weight the preorder sales as heavily as purchases/borrows made after the books releases, which may impact rank.
  • Don’t forget the impact of your newsletter to launch
