If you're the leader of a nonprofit organization, you no doubt face a constant barrage of demands and opportunities. And the more successful your organization becomes, the more demands you need to field. For example, your clients want you to provide more or different services; other groups ask you to partner with them; staff members suggest new program ideas and priorities. As a result, you are flooded with new possibilities, and at the same time, you have your own ideas for opportunities to create and seek out.
Although this is an excellent problem, you can't do it all—and it can be challenging to consider all the options. So how do you decide which opportunities deserve the valuable time of your staff, board, and volunteers?
This is where strategic planning comes in. A strategic plan enables an organization to function from an intentional and active place rather than a reactive one. It streamlines decision-making and acts as a road map for realizing the organization's vision.
I witnessed the benefits of strategic planning for nonprofits constantly while delivering training for several nonprofits on team building. Yet, I am always amazed at the sector's general fear of nonprofit strategic planning. I get it; strategic planning has traditionally been done so badly that many have given up on the idea. But that's a mistake.
You are just spinning your wheels without a long-term strategy for what your nonprofit is trying to accomplish and how you will marshal people and money to reach it.

I recently saw a fantastic presentation from the director of development for the Special Olympics in Colorado. presentation, I question myself, what are all the nonprofit professionals who speak like her in public with the ability to adapt a speech for the audience with confidence, saying a big breakthrough tells storytelling, keeping short and sweet, able to modulate to avoid engaging the audience and above all being yourself. Jan Radnoti is the director of development for the Special Olympics in Colorado. She has more than 14 years on her belt working with Special Olympics in California and Colorado. She primarily works with law enforcement agencies throughout the state in raising awareness and fundraising for over 15,500 Special Olympics, Colorado athletes.
There's so many different goals that she has, when she publicly speaks, it isn't making the sale every time, it's planting that seed. That's really what it's about. If you can really focus on the passion that you have for the nonprofit you work for, that passion should help you get over that self-criticism. Because all you are, you are a messenger for your nonprofit.

Through BBB’s Torch Awards for Ethics, Jennifer works closely with Ethics Scholar Interns from the University of Wyoming, Colorado State University, and the University of Northern Colorado. To round out her responsibilities in what she calls the role of a lifetime, Jennifer is involved with our military at FE Warren AFB in Cheyenne and engages with regional veterans through her board role with a veteran nonprofit.
