29 Apr 2024Feeling Lost? Ancient Rituals to Help You Find Answers Without Psychedelics | Katharine Hargreaves01:32:54

Ep 113. Have you ever wanted to experience spiritual growth from psychedelics but don’t actually want to trip? Are you stuck at a crossroads in life and not sure which path you’re meant to take? Meet the woman who connects you with specific rituals you can do in nature to find your deepest answers without ever having to take Ayahuasca. Katherine Hargreaves is a practitioner of West African divination, an ancient method of translation that helps people tap into information, messages, and ancestors on the other side by reconnecting us with the elements of nature. As you complete the rituals you're assigned (whether that’s throwing milk and honey into the ocean with a prayer, or screaming your anger into a hole in the woods to give it back to the earth), you quiet your mind, clear your physical channel, and are able to hear the guidance of your soul, your ancestors, and the spirits of the earth.

HERE’S THE JUICE:

- The wild ritual that Olivia did on a mountainside to help her get clarity on her career

- How rituals prepare us to receive messages and transformation in the years after

- Chronological vs deep time and why we can’t expect things to happen on our timelines

- How to incorporate elements into rituals for specific purposes (like ocean water, honey, dirt, etc.)

- How to complete a honey ritual if you’re looking for a new place to live

- How Katharine got initiated into the closed practice of West African shamanic tradition

- The idea that nature can be JUST as powerful as psychedelics

- Exactly how to start noticing nature speaking to you

- Easy, tangible ways to work with your ancestors, like creating an altar

- The importance of asking for guidance out loud – to nature and your ancestors

- How to know if divination work is right for you in this moment

03 Mar 2025How to Turn Your Daily “Routines” into Intentional Rituals That Can Change Your Life00:59:40

Ep 137 Have you ever wished you could curate more magic into your daily life? Building a routine is so important but how do we take our routines a step further to ritualize the mundane? We’re all guilty of rushing through our days to maximize productivity, yet slowing wayyyy down allows us to find meaning in the in-between moments. In this episode, I’m taking you through some of the special daily & seasonal rituals that have helped me mark important moments in time, incorporate prayer and mindfulness to really understand what’s happening in my life, and shifted my mindset to see the beauty of what is in front of me. We think that the impactful moments in life have to all be large but the real moments are as small as appreciating warm socks, climbing into a made bed, or gentle movement. Turning an everyday task into something sacred can be the first step to shifting our minds to a state of gratitude. Through developing a ritual around daily and seasonal practices we can nurture a deeper relationship with ourselves, and our ancestors to make our day-to-day life just a little bit sweeter.

HERE'S THE JUICE:

  • Why we need to understand the difference between routine and ritual & how to use presence to transform everyday tasks

  • Olivia's entire morning regimen and the science behind each element

  • How to create sacred space through simple practices like phone-free walks

  • The transformative power of the Jupiter Kazemi weekend and how it changed her approach to play

  • How to bring ritual into herbalism and plants and the importance of maintaining an altar space for ancestral connection

  • The real reason  slowing down will deeply change your relationship with daily tasks and the power of listening to signs and synchronicities in everyday life

  • The subtle art of noticing in order to receive guidance from the world around you

01 Jul 2024The Truth About GMOs & How to Eat Around Corruption in Our Food System | Courtney Swan01:37:40

Ep 122. We’re kicking things off with an impromptu hello and life update from Olivia — then diving into the nitty gritty with Courtney Swan, a real food activist who is on a mission to fix our broken food system. Today she’s answering the question: are GMOs safe for consumption? There are five genetically modified crops on the market that have become so abundant that they’re used in almost all packaged foods… knowing what they are and where they’re found is the key to learning how to eat your way around corruption in our food supply. In this episode, Courtney articulately breaks down the practices being used in agriculture today – clarifying ways we can be supporting farmers doing things right (and tangible ways to not fall victim to our current food system).

HERE’S THE JUICE:

  • What are the five genetically modified foods? WHY do we have such an overabundance of them on the market?

  • What food lobbying is and why soda is more accessible on food stamps than produce

  • How monocropping is negatively affecting farmers

  • How food hybridization and genetically modifying our crops are not the same practice

  • What the problem with corn is now, and why we are continually overfed and undernourished

  • Why seed oils are in so many of our foods – creation from industrial waste products

24 Feb 2020EP. #08 - THE MOST NOURISHING WAY TO CONSUME HERBS - how to make infusions for thyroid health, energy & more01:34:33

Introducing herbal medicine into your life doesn't have to be intimidating! Simply understanding the basics of “herbalism 101” — including the different “classes” of herbs — will empower you to understand your body in a whole new way. Today, Olivia sits down with fellow herbalist Traci Donat of Simples Tonics, to talk about the most nourishing way to get started in your kitchen: by making herbal infusions. We go over the top plants we like to use and what each of them benefits most (for example Schizandra infusions for ‘leaky energy’ and ‘mental diarrhea’ where the brain can’t fully “form” thoughts, Oatstraw infusions for dry skin and joints, and Burdock infusions for liver and lymphatic health). More than anything, we emphasize how simple it is to steep these herbs in a mason jar overnight and reap the incredible nutritional benefits. As a bonus, at the top of the episode Olivia covers a mini lesson where she explains the three ways that herbalists meet a plant and get to know its actions. What can a bitter taste in a plant tell you? What does it mean if a plant is pungent and spicy? What’s the difference between an adaptogen and a nervine? Fellow plant enthusiasts and lovers of learning, this one is for you!

22 Nov 2022THE DOCTOR THAT CHANGED MY LIFE - preventing cognitive decline and insulin resistance, why muscle matters more than anything & the science behind a high-protein diet with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon01:52:48

Ep 73. Today's guest, who has been my doctor for the last almost 6 years - is a physician with a passion for nutritional science and “muscle centric medicine” that has dedicated her life to helping ALL of us understand the importance of dietary protein.

She's going to cover:
✔️How muscle improves metabolic markers relevant to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and PCOS - because skeletal muscle is our primary site for disposing of the glucose aka carbohydrates we eat in our diets (and if we don't have muscle, there's nowhere for it to go!),
✔️How this ties into the picture of preventing or delaying Alzheimer's, which is often called "type 3 diabetes of the brain"
✔️Why Alzheimer's starts 20+ years before it actually presents and is a disease of mid-life, not old age (plus what to do now in your 20s, 30s and 40s)
✔️Why muscle is an endocrine organ that just as important as your thyroid, and produces biochemistry-altering compounds just like the thyroid produces hormones!
✔️How muscle is essentially alive, and is a nutrient sensing organ - it quite literally senses the amino acids we consume via diet, and how this sensitivity decreases as we age
✔️What protein threshold per meal you need to build muscle
✔️The difference between plant and animal protein in terms of amino acid quality
✔️Why leucine is the most important amino acid and why we need more as we age
✔️How much protein you should be eating based on your body weight
✔️How hormone changes and menopauses affect this picture
✔️Why body composition matters and how excess adipose tissue affects the brain
✔️And EXACTLY what you can start doing TODAY to become healthier, sharper, and hormonally optimized as you age.

27 Jan 2025Why I Don’t Fear Friendship Breakups Anymore & How to Know When to Stay, When to Go01:20:29

Ep 132. Why are friendship breakups even more dramatic than romantic ones, and how might they teach us about deeper patterns of behavior we may need to break? In this solo episode, I share my experience of losing close friendships, as well as how I’ve maintained and nurtured long-term, healthy relationships. I'm breaking down the #1 sign I look for in myself and others to know if there is capacity to be a “good friend,” why we often enter dynamics that recreate the one we shared with our mother until the dynamic becomes conscious, and why sometimes it “has to be dramatic” in order for the pattern to be witnessed and broken. Whether you're currently struggling with friendships or looking to deepen your existing relationships, I hope this episode will make you feel a whole lot less messy – and a lot more understood.

HERE'S THE JUICE

  • The number 1 sign of a healthy friendship

  • How to have both compassion & high standards for the relationships in your life

  • How to know if it’s just a mistake, or a repeated pattern of behavior

  • How to avoid friendship breakups in the future by looking for red flags in your OWN behavior, not theirs, when you’re around them

  • The importance of personal responsibility and how to develop this lens in conflict

  • How to grow together in a long term friendship without growing apart

  • How to create a relationship with yourself first to truly enjoy connection, rather than “fulfill a need”

  • The ways childhood wounds and "mother wounds" shape our friendship patterns

  • Why it's okay to be "choosy" about who you let into your inner circle

  • Why loneliness can actually be an unexpected medicine

13 Apr 2020EP. #11 – LEARN YOUR UNIQUE HUMAN DESIGN TYPE — how to understand your human design helps you show up in life01:53:57

In episode #11 we learn all about the foundation of Human Design from a true expert, Erin Claire Jones. To get every last ounce out of this episode, you need to do one quick thing before we dive in… Get your free personal Human Design Chart HERE. To kick things off, Erin Claire Jones gives us an overview on what Human Design is and what it does. In short, it’s a self awareness tool that can help you make decisions and show you if you’re on the right path. One thing I LOVE about Human Design is that it’s basically a gateway to knowing yourself. It’s similar to astrology in the sense that it peels back the layers to reveal who we are and how we work, allowing us to get into a flow where we can exist with less pushing and resistance … and damn, if I don’t need more of that in my life!

Human Design draws from other systems like astrology, Kabbalah, quantum physics, genetics, bio physics, and MORE. I absolutely love this because it totally reflects my personal philosophy as an herbalist. I don’t practice just one thing! I pull from Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Western herbal medicine, etc. and create my own way of doing things.

However, his young adult life couldn’t have been more different than his current reality. Around his 21st birthday, Doug was detoxing from opiates in a jail cell after years of drug addiction. Doug’s mission today is to inspire others to overcome adversity, break free from destructive addictions, and become the best version of themselves.

Ep 121. What if you’ve never actually experienced your true personality? The truth is, when our hormones are out of whack, we’re totally different people. While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, there are some key ways that we can all reduce inflammation and regulate our hormones, according to Dr. Corina Dunlap, a naturopathic women’s health and hormone specialist. In this episode, she gets juicy about the link between cortisol and ovulation (hint: we’re all too stressed out) and dives deep into the importance of relationships – with others, ourselves and mother nature.

HERE’S THE JUICE:

  • How inflammation can affect our mood, and make it hard to understand what our baseline or that “safe” feeling should feel like.

  • What the “goldilocks hormones” are – we don’t want too little or too much of them!

  • What the first line of action should be in addressing ovulation issues

  • Why unplugging your wifi at night could be the best trick to getting better sleep

  • How chronic stress doesn’t allow your body to feel safe enough to digest properly or ovulate

  • The best practices that you can adopt day-to-day to help with inflammation.

  • Clear questions you can ask yourself, like: is this me, or is this my hormones?

Ep 94. Today we’re going deep with one of the leading voices in the global wellness movement, Millana Snow. To give you an idea of how committed she is to personal growth, Millana started meditating at age 4. She is a healer, teacher, and wellness entrepreneur with a passion for sharing healing with a global community of clients, followers, brands and celebrities. Here’s the juice:

  • Why we’re experiencing a lack of emotional intimacy in our culture

  • The misconception that friendships don’t require the same amount of work as romantic relationships

  • The three steps you can take to make conscious friends as an adult

  • Why you can’t expect people to be your everything. For instance, if you’re having a traumatic experience you need to seek out a trauma informed professional

  • How to maintain intentional friendships when you have a full life. Hint: boundaries!

  • Prioritizing yourself so that you aren’t giving from an empty cup

  • It’s really not about the quantity but rather the quality and depth of your relationships

Ep 77. Hello and welcome to the final episode of season 3 of What's the Juice podcast. What better way to complete the season than with my favorite type of episode: “Ask An Herbalist”. I love these call-in episodes because I get to talk human-to-human with you guys and help answer the questions that are top of mind within our Organic Olivia community. This week, your questions span from how to manage chronic physical pain, to how to deal with jealousy, to how to change the subconscious mind. I did my best to give as many tangible tips, resources, and perspective shifts as I possibly could in an hour-long episode so I hope my personal experience helps you in some capacity. I also want to take a moment to reflect on how amazed I am by this community. This show would not be the same without your thoughtful questions and your commitment to self-growth. It’s an honor to be part of your healing journey. Thank you for trusting me with your questions and for turning in every week to support the show. 09 Mar 2020Ep. #09 - NOT AN ANNOYING SELF-HELP EPISODE - how to actually take action and get unstuck through experimentation & play01:25:01

In Episode 5 we learned that 2020 is a year of completion — the year to wrap up old stories and patterns, and close the door on anything that is holding us back from our next level. Today’s episode is an honest yet daringly playful guide to HOW you can let go of fear and start your new story. If you’ve been feeling stuck or frustrated, like you’re standing in your own way but just can’t take the first step, this is for you. Katharine Hargreaves, founder of The Fearless Experiment teaches us (with full-on gusto) that so much of our fear is actually just blocked excitement. That there’s a part of us just dying to run and jump into the unknown even if we find a million reasons not to. She explains her method of challenging yourself to simply take action by (a) starting with the smallest first step possible, and (b) telling people you trust to hold you accountable. She explains why pressuring yourself to be the “problem solver” is really just a mechanism of survival that we got stuck in along the way; that we should care a lot more about getting to KNOW the problem first rather than judging how well we employ a solution. We need to learn how to hold ourselves in the mystery… experimentation is valuable play, and if we could stop taking ourselves so seriously, we’d do it a lot more. Sometimes the solution you’re seeking looks a lot different than originally expected, but you’ll never know until you act.

13 Jan 2025What To Do When You’re Completely Lost in Life & It’s Time For a Rebirth01:43:29

Ep 130. Welcome to Season 6, and the mark of a brand new chapter for What’s The Juice Podcast. Wellness is changing, humanity as a collective is changing… each and every one of us are going through huge internal shifts right now. When I sat with the question, ‘how can I be of maximum service to my community at this very moment?’ I realized that at least for right now, that doesn’t look like another episode about your circadian rhythm. It doesn’t look like another complicated protocol to add to your to do list. In the age of information overload, we now know what we “should” be doing to take care of ourselves – I’m more interested in unpacking the deeper, not-so-palatable reasons as to why we sometimes can’t or don’t. The things we think we’re alone in carrying, like shame or guilt, that prevent us from hearing our own inner wisdom and voices about what our bodies actually need separate from an IG perfect morning routine.

I’m ready to show up as a fuller, wiser version of myself and speak even my ugliest truths because telling our stories is what free us from that shame. This means I also get to speak to the fullness of YOU, and the big life you’re working so hard to create by facing your deepest layers. Let’s talk about all the things we struggle with behind closed doors: how to build a real relationship with yourself after a lifetime at odds, candid chats about vices, friendship breakups, and rediscovering your inner child so that she can get you through this often magical but sometimes extremely difficult life. Come along for solos, Q&As, conversations between everyone from thought leaders to my very best friends.

Starting off strong, today we’re chatting about periods of death and rebirth. Massive transitions are a part of life, but how do we best care for ourselves during a time when it feels like the world we once knew is ending? What do you do when you wake up one day and your life no longer fits – you know you need to say goodbye to the way things are, but you’re terrified of jumping when you don’t know what’s next? I'm breaking down my last couple of years and the terrifying experience of letting go, sitting in nothingness, and trusting that something new will be born. I’ll be sharing the very best wisdom I learned from the pain. Whether you're ready for a change in your career, relationships, or sense of identity, this episode is a comforting reminder that growth is necessary, nonlinear, and ultimately SO worth it.

HERE'S THE JUICE

  • Why we’re so afraid of change and how to understand that the “death” before a rebirth is necessary

  • What to do when you know a part of your identity has expired, but you can’t quite see what’s next yet

  • How to know when you're entering a period of restructuring and change (and the signs your life might be giving you that it's time to course-correct)

  • Why major life pivots are essential even if our society doesn't value us during them – how to train your brain to know that discomfort and pain come before growth and birth

  • Embracing the idea that your worth isn't dependent on your creations and productivity, but rather your innate ability to create in the first place

  • How to navigate misalignment and have patience for ourselves when we don’t listen to our inner voice and fall off our path

  • The power of the unknown and why jumping into it is sometimes the only way forward

  • How to create space for rest and reflection in small ways on a day-to-day basis & why nature can be an influential teacher and source of comfort during transitions

Sandra Sharpe, Certified Functional Nutrition Practitioner, and Health Coach, specializes in comprehensive, holistic, mind, body, and spirit postpartum support. In this episode, Sandra dives into all the nitty-gritty details of preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum. 18 Oct 2022ARE YOU MAL-ILLUMINATED? - using light as a tool for healing, what a lack of full-spectrum UV can do + how red light therapy can help with BioLight Founder Dr. Mike Belkowski00:59:37

Ep 68. Did you know you might be mal-illuminated? If you’re not getting enough exposure to full-spectrum UV light (aka soaking up some sun), your cells might not be working as well as they should. Here to *enlighten* us about how our bodies use UV light and how red light therapy can be beneficial is physical therapist and founder/CEO of BioLight, Dr. Mike Belkowski.

We’ll go over how red light and infrared light therapy works, some of the things it can be used for, and why we all probably need to get outside more. Let’s get juicy!

PS - Thanks to Dr. Mike, I started using a travel-sized red light device from his line called the Shine. I became a believer when my digestion was off the day we filmed this podcast, and he told me to put it directly on my stomach for 10 minutes and see if I felt a difference. Not only did my stomach ache get better – my mind felt calmer too, which he explained is because red light therapy works on the gut-brain axis. I’ve truly loved this device ever since and keep it next to my bed in case I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep (a few minutes on my forehead or stomach works like a charm to calm my mind down). I’ve also used it for headaches and a mood boost in the winter months!

If you feel inspired after hearing about red light and want to try the same device I use, BioLight extended code ORGANICOLIVIA (all caps) for a discount on any of their products.

20 Jan 2020HEALING GENERATIONAL TRAUMA w/ DR. ZELINA - how she recovered from lupus and why healing is more than just physical01:08:22

Ep 3. What role does spiritual wellness play in the healing of the physical? In this week's episode Olivia sits down with Dr. Zelina Medina, who became a doctor of acupuncture after being diagnosed with the autoimmune disease lupus. Together we explore the steps she took to heal, and chat about the root cause of autoimmunity through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine. While changing her diet made a huge difference, she credits her progress even more so to shamanic medicine ceremonies such as soul retrieval in order to tackle the many layers of disease. Dr. Z explains that a part of the soul gets lost, or detached from the self, when we experience childhood trauma — this affects us physically, and even gets passed on generationally. Luckily the science is catching up, and thanks to tools like the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) questionnaire, we now have concrete evidence that early emotional trauma can increase your risk for chronic illness later in life. If you’re someone who likes to connect the dots, this episode will validate and hopefully inspire you.

13 Dec 2022HOW TO EMBRACE OUR GRIEF TO ACCESS JOY — Dr. Neeta Bhushan on the importance of emotional resilience through life's relentless hardships01:06:15

Ep 76. In this next episode of What’s the Juice, I had the opportunity to chat with the amazing Dr. Neeta Bhushan — former cosmetic dentist turned mental health coach, social entrepreneur, international speaker, and best-selling author behind the new book That Sucked. Now What? Before you tune in, I’ll let you know this — Neeta’s life has not been an easy one. She lost three immediate family members within the span of just three years, completely altering her life’s trajectory. Neeta later found herself stuck in an incredibly toxic marriage, resulting in a major wake-up call and healing journey that would redefine her life as she knew it. Our conversation is jam-packed with essential nuggets of information, like how imperative it is to find joy wherever you can, and a brief introduction to what’s known as the “Bounce Factor,” a four-step tool to determine your resiliency:

  1. Examining your upbringing.
  2. Leaning into “good” stress and doing what challenges/scares you.
  3. Emotional capacity — i.e. your ability to “feel the feels.”
  4. Radical self-awareness — i.e. your ability to tune into your life and see what’s going well or not going well.

14 Sep 2020EP. #24 POST COVID HAIR LOSS - recovering after fever, stress & immune dysregulation00:53:28

Friendly reminder: I am an herbalist, not a medical doctor. I love plants, PubMed, and combining tradition with science. My mission with this episode is to break down everything I know about post-COVID syndrome and get to the root of how we can fully heal our bodies after experiencing infection or prolonged periods of stress. In this episode I will share what I’ve learned from other professionals who are currently treating post-COVID syndrome.

Post-COVID hair loss is something we’ve been hearing more and more about over the past few months, and has been at the top of my mind after hearing experiences from so many in the OO community. Today I’m going to share my perspective as an herbalist on the what, why, and how we can support our bodies as we recover and convalesce. We’ll chat about “Telogen Effluvium” (hair loss that shows up several months after a fever or infection), the effects of stress and how B vitamins get depleted, and why mushroom broth may help with post-infection immune dysregulation.

07 Sep 2020EP. #23 WHY BEING THE “GOOD GIRL” ISN’T SERVING YOU – how to break up with perfectionism ft. Majo Molfino01:23:10
Majo Molfino says that for thousands of years, women have been taught to be “good” instead of powerful. If you’ve ever struggled with self-judgment or feeling shame around your opinions, wants and needs -- then this episode is for you. In her book, "Break The Good Girl Myth," Majo identifies 5 myths we identify with at different levels, including the myth of perfection, the myth of rules, and more. Today you'll be able to figure out which myth you resonate with most, what it's costing you in your daily life, and how to break free from shame and perfectionism. And guess what? When we're not as hard on ourselves, we're not as hard on other women either; this is how we heal as a collective.

17 Jun 2024You Don’t Need to Be Vegan to Save the Earth | The Truth About Regenerative Agriculture with Taylor Collins01:35:26

Ep 120. Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to reverse the damage we have done to our earth? Have you been told that going vegan is the only way to do so? When Taylor Collins bought 900 acres of factory-farmed land, it was completely barren, desolate, and degraded. But by working with nature’s cycles and reintroducing animals in order to loosen the soil and give back to the land, Taylor transformed his farm into a thriving ecosystem that supports higher crop yields, healthier soil and more nutritious food. In this episode, we talk about the power of connection, the “green narrative,” and what we as consumers can do to help our earth today. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now – let’s dive in!

HERE’S THE JUICE:

  • How factory farming works against nature’s principles to yield a higher output yet lower nutritional value

  • Taylor’s belief that humans aren’t inherently destructive but our values of “more more more” absolutely are

  • Why monocropping as a “solution” to global food insecurity is promoting a broken system

  • How regenerative farming mimics the cycles of nature and creates community

  • Why we don’t need to stop eating meat but we need to rethink how we do it

  • The idea that healthy soil is the KEY to nutrient-rich foods and why topsoil is so critical

  • Why “Impossible” Meat isn’t actually a better or more sustainable solution than regeneratively farmed meat

  • Why our farmers are in crisis – both personally and financially

  • How to vote with our dollars when it comes to food and support the growing community of regenerative farmers

Ep 79. In this juicy episode of What's the Juice, I'm sitting down with Dr. William Li, author of "Eat to Beat Disease," to challenge common perceptions of body fat and explore practical strategies for maintaining a healthy balance. Here are the key takeaways:

  • Essential role of body fat: Fat cells act as a fuel tank during development, storing energy for future use.
  • Consequences of overeating: Excessive calorie intake leads to fat accumulation, metabolic issues, and inflammation.
  • Listening to your body: Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues to avoid overeating.
  • Quality of food matters: Choose nutritious options to fuel your body effectively.
  • Understanding visceral fat: Excess visceral fat surrounding organs can impact health negatively.

27 Jul 2020EP. #18 MY LIFE CHANGING COVID STORY — how fighting for my parents' survival changed my life02:58:19
My podcast has been silent since May 25th, and I'm finally ready to tell you what happened.

This is an episode that I've been ferociously putting off for months because honestly, I'm still actively processing everything that happened. This episode of What's the Juice wasn't premeditated. It wasn't a scheduled recording, or part of our season one production plans. And yet, nothing over the past six months has gone "as planned"... so here we are.

This episode is a raw recount of exactly what went down in March 2020 when BOTH of my parents almost lost their lives to the first wave of the novel Coronavirus. Our story kicks off at the beginning of the first COVID outbreak in New York and this makes it all the more unnerving. None of us knew anything back then. I was trying to figure this virus out in real time as my mom was being put on a ventilator and my dad was terrified for his life. I was called to rely on everything I've ever learned as a humbled herbalist with a newfound, deeper appreciation for Western Medicine to get them through.

This is the next chapter of my growth. I told you guys What's the Juice would be an extension of our community, so Nick and I are here today, on the mic, recording all the wild details about how relentless patient advocacy, experimental drugs, round the clock prayer, and a few earth-side angels saved both my parents lives. You'll hear how facing the potential loss of my loved ones changed me as a person forever and helped me to realize my own mortality (and thus, what's truly important in life). You'll learn how hard it was to advocate for them in the hospital system, and why finding out what was in my mom's feeding tube formula (hint: corn) helped me make decisions that were better for her health and survival. You'll get our side of how the virus presented in our own bodies once we contracted it from my father.

But most of all, you'll hear how LOVE for your family can give you the power to fight even when you don't have an ounce of strength left. This is a story about family coming together and deeeeep generational healing far beyond the virus.

It was the worst time of my life, but it also showed me my relentless will to fight for the people that I love. And I'm a much better person for it today.

10 Aug 2020EP. #19 COVID’S LINK TO ORAL HEALTH — Dr. Victoria’s research on the oral microbiome and secondary bacterial infections01:15:43

Most of us are taught to brush 2-3 times a day and floss regularly, but what we aren’t told is the whole story on WHY these practices are so important. Taking care of our mouths is more than just protecting our smile… it about boosting our immunity, protecting against autoimmune conditions, and preventing infection.

Since Dr. Victoria has been furloughed during the COVID crisis, she’s dedicated her time to educating herself on the infection. Over the past few months, she’s connected the dots between the virus and common oral bacteria, leading her to create some compelling hypotheses about the role of bacterial superinfection in COVID complications.

This episode is a real "put the pieces together" moment for anyone looking to understand their own sensitive nervous system to create a more balanced life. 04 May 2020EP. #14 - WHO IS SHE? MEET THE HERB - Agrimony: for liver health, gut dysbiosis, and jaw tension00:41:10

Well, the time has come and this episode is just me, my microphone, and my herbalism school notes.... And I gotta admit, I freaking loved recording this episode because it gave me the opportunity to spill the juice on something I’m so so SO passionate about. As if it wasn’t already clear that talking about herbs turns me into a serious Nerd with a capital N, this episode totally gives me away.

Okay, so here are some fast facts about agrimony…

Agrimony’s general profile:

  • It’s a part of the rose family
  • It’s a liver support herb (In fact, its common name is ‘liverwort’. Cute, right?)
  • It’s an astringent, so it’s cooling and drying
  • Its flavor is bitter, pungent, with a mild sweet and sour

Are you ready? Because I’m about to go into full-on herbalist mode and I hope you’re here for it!

10 Feb 2025How to Have a Conversation with Your Higher Self (& The Unconventional Way I Use AI to Treat it Like a Therapy Session)01:15:36

Ep 134. I recently had a transformative experience where I felt called to lay down before bed and allow my “higher self” to thank me for all the work I’ve done up to this point. I had the thought to voice record the process, where I simply talked to myself and said all the things we never acknowledge or validate out loud but need to hear — not from the outside world, but from ourselves. Afterwards, I decided to plug the transcript of the voice recording into ChatGPT… and I was shocked at how valuable it was to not only have this healing moment and my own words recollected in such detail, but to have actual helpful prompts that made this like a therapy session with valuable take aways & homework. While I don’t believe that AI should be creating our visual artwork or writing our blog posts, I've found that it can be incredibly useful for self reflection and introspection and I wanted to share the exact formula of how I completed this process, as it was so deeply healing for my inner child to hear these words come out of my mouth. So this week, I’m sharing the exact therapeutic practice that I created (with AI!) to connect with my higher self. If you’re feeling called to jump back into a creative flow or are looking for a cost conscious, unconventional tool to help you in your personal growth, this is the perfect place to start.

HERE'S THE JUICE:

  • Why understanding Internal Family Systems (IFS) can unlock deep healing by finally embracing all parts of yourself

  • The importance of “talking to yourself” out loud and letting the wise voice inside of you speak with direct insights, appreciation, and advice

  • How to turn this self-conversation into actionable prompts that will further your mental health using AI

  • How to build better self awareness and why it’s necessary for lasting behavioral change

  • The hidden power of rest and why it’s just as crucial as productivity for person growth - understanding the path that got you to where you are may not be the path that elevates you to your next step in life

  • What exactly does AI have in common with talk therapy? Could it potentially act as a  cost effective mental health tool?

15 Nov 2022HOW TO REVERSE YOUR (BIOLOGICAL) AGE — using “epigenetics”, food & herbs to change your genes and live longer with Dr. Kara Fitzgerald01:13:12

Ep 72. This season of the podcast, I’ve been working to define vitality and well-being through a framework I call the “10 Pillars of Health.” While many health experts boast a profound sense of knowledge in one or two pillars specifically, my next guest — the acclaimed Dr. Kara Fitzgerald — is incredibly well-versed in all 10.

Dr. Fitzgerald’s latest book, “Younger You: Reduce Your Bio Age and Live Longer, Better,” explores the science behind longevity and her discovery of a three-year reversal of biological aging, so you know I had to get the deets. In this revelatory conversation, we cover how the following can actually hack your epigenome:

  • Methyl-donor nutrients (found in whole foods like beets, eggs, leafy greens, mushrooms, seeds, etc.)
  • Methylation adaptogens (quercetin, circumin, resveratrol, green tea, etc.)
  • Exercise
  • Sleep
  • Oxytocin release

And more. As always, tune into the episode to dive deeper into these essential nuggets of information. And be sure to share your thoughts with me on IG: @shoporganicolivia.

14 Aug 2023ARE YOU ADDICTED TO DOPAMINE? - how to feel human again in a world full of overstimulation + choosing pain as much as pleasure with Dr. Lembke01:18:23

Ep 83. Today's guest, Dr. Anna Lembke, explains exactly how to reset your brain's reward system so that you can feel happy again — without reaching for something external. Dr. Lembke is a psychiatrist, author, and Chief of the Addiction Medicine Clinic at Stanford University. This incredible woman changed my life and I believe she is the antidote our world needs as we navigate never-ending stimuli from tech, social media, and dopamine-releasing pleasures.

Here's the juice:

  • your brain has pain and pleasure "scales"– any tip towards pleasure has an equal cost toward pain
  • addiction exists on a spectrum and we’re all affected by it; it’s so much broader than the extremes of alcoholism or drug addiction
  • Anyone can get addicted to ANYTHING and we don’t necessarily need to have a history of trauma or mental health obstacles to be impacted by addiction
  • there are proven benefits to doing a “dopamine fast” to reset your brain’s reward system

24 Feb 2025Why Being Seen Feels So Scary (And Why You Need To Do It Anyway) with Noelle Mejia02:01:22

Ep 136 Do you feel like you’re ready to be the main character in your story — but all your life you’ve been in a supporting role? Are you trying to pursue your calling, but perfectionism and the fear of being seen are holding you back? Today we have a very special guest on the podcast for a much needed heart to heart.. this is the type of conversation that women have behind closed doors that helps us to heal and deeply witness one another. Noelle is joining us today for real talk on the intricacies of motherhood, the terrifying but thrilling prospect of owning your gifts and no longer playing small, and taking back your OWN life no matter what that looks like to you. Noelle is here to break down everything from starting her “Fit + Thick” career behind the scenes with her sister, to realizing she was worthy of being on the forefront too, and how the concept of “messy action” got her through it. This conversation was such a gift to record and truly highlights the importance of holding a vision for those we love and the deep power friendship can have.

HERE'S THE JUICE:

  • Why motherhood has the potential to push us to become better versions of ourselves and tangible tools to harness that potential if you are feeling overwhelmed

  • Recognizing that everything, cleaning, cooking, playing with your child, can be an opportunity for nervous system work.

  • Truly understanding that our parents’ nervous system dysregulation is not ours to carry.

  • Learning to meet yourself with curiosity, unlearning what no longer serves you, and having the courage to be honest about what we are holding on to.

  • How believing in someone, before they believe in themselves, can be life-changing and the importance of holding a high vision for those we love

23 Aug 2022PARENTING OUR KIDS AND OURSELVES W/ BOUNDARIES + SELF REFLECTION - Dr. Siggie on using intuition, curiosity, and patience to approach our relationships with kids, adults, and our inner child01:34:31

Ep 61. This is the episode we didn’t know we needed– EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT A PARENT! I took so much value from this convo with Dr. Siggie Cohen because although she is a renowned parenting expert… what she’s really teaching us today is how to be a compassionate, boundaried human that knows how to meet another human (big or little) exactly where they are.

Parenting is one of the most challenging tasks we can take on; partially because raising a tiny creature with really big emotions takes a LOT of patience and energy, but also because of the way our reactions to those big emotions tell us about how we’re parenting our own inner child.

Dr. Siggie is a child and family therapist with over 35 years of experience. As a parenting expert who works with toddlers through teens, Dr. Siggie covers how best to connect with your kids in a way that benefits both you and them. By putting our egos aside and consistently asking “what’s underneath the surface of the conflict in front of me?,” we can experience healthier interactions with not only our children, but within all other relationships in our lives.

“Your goal is not to make your child's life easy, it's to show them they can do hard things.” Dr. Siggie believes that you don’t always want your child to be happy— in fact, they MUST learn to not only recognize but sit with other emotions as well (like frustration, jealousy, boredom and disappointment) in order to function through life’s challenges. By teaching our kids to be mindful and accepting of the full spectrum of difficulty and joy, we actually protect them from dismissing, denying, or being overtaken by any one of these complex feelings.

Likewise, when we’re feeling unhappy ourselves (perhaps we’ve “failed” at an important project or made a major mistake), Dr. Siggie talks us through how to both practice and model productive, solution-oriented self-reflection, using every bump in the road as a learning opportunity for ourselves and the little ones that look up to us.

Whether you have kids, are thinking about having kids, or simply want to reparent yourself, these tips should help you foster healthier relationships with yourself, your kids, and others in your life. Let’s get juicy!

03 Jun 2024Mouth Breathing, What Your Dentist Isn’t Telling You & The Truth About Fluoride | Dr. Staci Whitman01:50:36

Ep 118. When was the last time you did a radical 180 about a long held belief? Today I’m sitting down with a brilliant dentist who was once picketing in the streets for water fluoridation — yet was courageous enough to change her mind and speak out once she dug into the data once and for all. Meet Dr. Staci Whitman, a board-certified dentist who takes a whole-body, holistic and functional approach to oral health. In this episode, Staci unpacks the surprising factors that contribute to the decline of our oral health including mouth breathing, hormones, and gut dysbiosis. She explains why these underlying root causes are ignored by conventional dentistry and exactly what we need to be asking about and advocating for at our dentist appointments.

HERE’S THE JUICE:

  • Functional vs. conventional dentistry and the importance of both

  • Why dental professionals haven't introduced oral microbiome testing as a baseline for all patients

  • How hormone imbalance is leading to an increase in cavities in women and the signs to look for in prevention

  • What LPS is and how it contributes to pathogenic bacteria overgrowth

  • The fact that we aren’t taught about healthy bacteria and are encouraged to wipe out all our bacteria with products like Listerine

  • Why dentists are sometimes the first people to diagnose Crohn's disease and how your oral health can inform gut health

  • What a cavity is and how it forms

  • When we may be able to repair cavities without requiring fillings

  • Why mouth breathing is so detrimental to our oral health and how to retrain yourself into healthy breathing habits

31 Aug 2020EP. #22 HOLY SPIT - saliva’s role in cavities, the dangers of fluoride + why diet matters more than brushing02:07:56

If you've been trying to get your gut right without understanding the role your oral microbiome plays in overall health—this episode is for you. As it turns out, at lot more than just food goes down every time we swallow and we're talking about it all with Dr. Mark Burhenne, aka Dr. B. Dr. B is a functional dentist who didn't stop learning after he graduated from dental school. Instead, he chose to study the root cause of dental issues and get super familiar with one part of the body: The mouth. At the core of his learnings is the fact that the state of our oral microbiome directly affects our overall health

05 Jul 2021WHY HORMONE IMBALANCE IS ON THE RISE - Dr. Aviva Romm shares tangible solutions for endo and PCOS01:20:02

Ep 30. This week’s episode features Dr. Aviva Romm—an MD, midwife, herbalist, and a bestselling author with her latest book: Hormone Intelligence. Do you have (or suspect you might have) a hormone imbalance, whether that’s endometriosis, PCOS, or you’re struggling with fertility? How about insomnia, or other complaints that are seemingly unrelated to hormone health but tend to come and go with your cycle? Today we’re talking about some potential root causes of all of these, and getting into simple and extremely tangible changes (herbs and beyond) that can impact your hormones on a foundational level. Let’s get juicy!

01 Nov 2022YOUR BRAIN DETERMINES YOUR HORMONES (not your ovaries alone) - why nervous system regulation and our identities are key for physical health w/ Zesty Ginger01:36:55

Ep 70. In this episode I’m sitting down with Megan Blacksmith and Dr. Alex Golden, the force behind Zesty Ginger, to talk about the power of subconsciousness and how brain chemistry is a deciding factor for everything in your daily life. After individually dealing with chronic hormonal imbalances, the duo developed what’s known as the Four Phase Cycle Approach to help women regain control over their health. In this episode, we had the opportunity to discuss an array of incredible topics, including everything from the irrefutable mind-body connection to seven practical steps you can take to “heal,” whatever that means to you.

A big focus of this episode is looking at how to account for your complete health while trying to achieve a specific goal. This is where the “Four Bodies” come in: Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual. In order to reach total fulfillment where happiness and wellness merge, you must nurture the mind-body connection. Simply put, you could take the most amazing supplements in the world, but if you’re not nourishing your mental health, the effort is futile.

27 May 2024The Man Who Sits with Death on Why Relationships Make a Life | Sah D'Simone01:47:27

Ep 117. Statistically, there are 15 core people in our lives who will show up when sh$# hits the fan – our mother’s funeral, a cancer diagnosis – they’re on the next plane. What if instead of filling our schedules working towards buying more things, we spent time nurturing the relationships that are truly all we have? In a modern day loneliness epidemic, lack of connection is becoming a disease, but our generation can turn it around. Sah D’Simone is here to say that even though relationships are hard, families are messy, and conflict is scary, this is the only path back to love and longevity. Sah is a spiritual leader, hospital chaplain who supports those at the end of life, and international best-selling author of Spiritually We. In this episode, he breaks down how to increase our capacity so that we can hold space for our people and right our relationships.

HERE’S THE JUICE:

  • Why human connection is a basic biological need (and how we’ve gotten so far away)

  • Why pop psychology is doing us a disservice by teaching us to cut off relationships with conflict instead of learning to face it

  • The difference between how easy it is to be spiritual alone in meditation vs. at the family dinner table when triggers come up

  • How to nurture true connection over complain culture and trauma-bonding relationships

  • Why your closest relationships are often the most triggering

  • How to live with integrity and what a lack of integrity looks like in your closest bonds

  • Why “conflict is your lovers” how to resolve conflict in a healthy way

  • Why time away from your parents may be necessary to grow and heal, but the goal is to always bring it back around

  • Why intellectualizing your feelings and making meaning keeps you from feeling your feelings

  • How to support someone in grief and the magnitude of holding space for loss

18 Sep 2023TAHINI ON (LITERALLY) EVERYTHING - extravagant recipes, finding your niche while building a business, and secrets from a celebrity chef with Brooke Baevsky, aka Chef Bae01:15:07

Ep 88. Today I’m sitting down with Brooke Baevsky, aka Chef Bae, an LA-based celebrity private chef to athletes, actors, supermodels, and even royals! She has amassed a massive following of “Food Baes'' on TikTok where she breaks the traditional allergy-friendly food stigma with delicious, health-forward & viral recipes. She also founded a non-profit cooking program for inner-city children & families in both Los Angeles and New York City, teaching people how to create a healthy, balanced diet on a limited budget. Chef Bae’s technical background in Holistic Nutrition and Food Science combined with her hilarious, quick-witted personality make this convo and her approach to food so much fun.

Links from the ep:

Here’s the juice:

  • How growing up in a family with tons of food allergies pushed her to get creative in the kitchen at a young age

  • How living in an area with high food insecurity galvanized her to start hosting and teaching community cooking classes for kids

  • The modern-day concept of rebranding anything to make it look like a health food

  • Why she is the antithesis of the “perfect” Instagram chef – making parody content, telling wild stories, and being her authentic self

  • The craziest meal prep that she ever did, like a Caesar salad served at Coachella covered in edible glitter

  • The top bizarre foods and supplements that truly have worked for her professional athlete clients’ performance

  • How to zhuzh up your food and drink with herbs, specifically digestive bitters

  • What a day in the life really looks like for a celebrity private chef (and what she cooks for dogs!)

  • How to decide what to charge people for your services, especially in the beginning when you’re honing your skill and may be struggling with your self-worth

  • The importance of having mentors in your professional space and asking for help

  • How to find your niche and build your brand in the content creation space

  • How we’re transitioning out of the era of perfectly photographed and curated food

10 Jun 2024Why The Solution To Binge Eating Might Not Be About Food | Nicki Parlitsis, RD01:47:51

Ep 119. What if the key to weight loss isn’t actually about what’s on our plates? Today I’m chatting with a true gem of a human being as well as a kick-ass nutritionist. Nicki Parlitsis helps her clients achieve their goals but also understand WHY they might be harming themselves with food through binging or restricted diets. In this episode she unpacks how binging is often a deeper reflection on our lives, showing us exactly what we need to focus on within ourselves to ultimately heal our relationship with food. We also discuss why binging is both an emotional AND physical response for many of us and how we can tune into the signs our bodies are giving us before we start to go down toxic paths.

HERE’S THE JUICE:

  • The difference between physical and emotional binge eating

  • Why women tend to fear gaining muscle and what it actually means to “tone” your body

  • The importance of training your brain in steps and why intuitive eating is a graduate level course in dietetics

  • What an all-or-nothing mindset with food looks like and how it contributes to binge eating

  • The fact that something as simple as thinking about meals as events can help retrain your brain to get out of a snacking mindset and into a space of intentional eating

  • Nicki’s favorite client hack of meal prepping like a chef

  • Why binge eating is not the problem and how to get to the root of what’s happening in your body

  • Why listening to your hunger cues is the first step to take even if it means abandoning your diet

05 Oct 2020EP. #26 THE SKIN EPISODE - cosmetic acupuncture instead of botox, hot baths for acne + upping your YIN to plump your SKIN01:24:08

This week on What's the Juice Amrit Singh and I nerd out about cosmetic acupuncture as an alternative to botox, how to stimulate production of your OWN collagen (instead of just supplementing), hot baths for acne, and other uncommon techniques from Traditional Chinese Medicine. We're covering several of my favorite topics: how emotional states can affect your physical meridians, how to protect your immune system, your lymphatic system, and the importance of your "Shen". BTW your "Shen" symbolizes your spirit; it’s a combo of happiness, alignment, fulfillment, energy, and how you deeply nourish yourself. Amrit and I get specific about how you can improve your skin using a whole body perspective, because the truth is, even the priciest serum won't give you that GLOW if your "Shen" isn't nourished.

We're going more than skin deep with this episode, so get your notebooks ready and let's get juicy!

20 May 2024A Real Conversation About Wellness Extremes, Cure-All Diets & How to Actually Find Balance | Shyla Cadogan, RD01:53:35

Ep 116. What does “good nutrition” actually mean – and why have we built a BILLION dollar industry that only makes us more confused about how to feed ourselves? Why is it that one day the internet is telling you to be a raw vegan, and 5 years later carnivore is suddenly a panacea? Shyla Cadogan is a registered dietitian focused on making nutrition simple again. Shyla explores the extensive impact that processed foods have on our bodies, while at the same time not putting perfection, whole foods or ‘superfoods’ on a pedestal. She brings some much needed nuance (and humor) to the question: what the heck should I eat and who should I listen to?

HERE’S THE JUICE:

  • Shyla’s transition from intense vegan diets to an unattached, simple way of fueling
  • The importance of finding the middle ground with nutrition rather than opting into extremes
  • Why nutrition professionals have a duty to keep things professional rather than trying to be cutting edge or go viral
  • How the concept of intuitive eating has gotten warped and why most of us are practicing it all wrong and feeling bad about it
  • How you can be anti-diet-culture and still not eat a lot of processed foods
  • Why Shyla says “a true relationship with food is having no relationship with it at all”
  • The importance of not shaming people for being imperfect in their health decisions and educating in a considerate manner
  • The history of “superfoods” and why the term is a bit of a scam
  • The distrust that the public currently has in dietitians (ie. thinking they’re paid by big pharma!)
  • How processed foods were originally created for war times and food corporations have used that opportunity to exploit us
  • How cultural foods play a role in healthy eating

10 Feb 2020Ep. #06 - THE LIFE CHANGING LYMPHATIC SYSTEM EPISODE - more on brain detox, fatigue, facial puffiness, and Alzheimer's Disease01:29:27

*PROMOCODE: use LYMPHATIC15 for 15% off Digestive Juice and Not Your Average Probiotic on my site: https://www.organicolivia.com/*

#06 On this episode I sit down with another lovely leo, Lisa Levitt Gainsley of The Lymphatic Message. We’re learning about the lymphatic system. What it is (your body’s largest circulatory system), what it’s responsible for, how it plays a role in digestion, brain detox, waste clearance, hormone health…. AND the major connection between the lymph and diseases like Alzheimer's, Crohn’s, and Ulcerative colitis. Lisa and I have a natural chemistry, so join us as we get the juice on how to move your lymph.

Mainstream wellness trends are only beginning to talk about the life changing Lymphatic system, but ancient systems of medicine such as TCM or Ayurveda, have always seen it as one of the first places to look for stagnation when the body is ill. This episode will help you detect signs of Lymph stagnation/dysfunction, and you’ll learn how to make sure it’s optimized through food, exercise, and at-home self massage. Plus, I list some amazing Ayurveda herbs and foods at the top of the show.

Ep 131. Why are chronic symptoms more common among “type A” perfectionists who struggle to slow down? How does the nervous system directly connect to histamine intolerance? We are back with Michelle Shapiro, RD for a deeply moving conversation on what it actually means to “regulate your nervous system” in a world where social media makes it look easy. If you’re dealing with mystery, chronic histamine symptoms – this is the missing piece you need to know in order to begin feeling safe in your body once again. In this part 2 deep dive, Michelle Shapiro explains the crucial connection between anxiety, nervous system dysregulation and chronic immune activation. For anyone feeling trapped in a spiral of unbearable symptoms, this episode provides a road map for creating safety within your body, even when you are at your lowest.

HERE'S THE JUICE:

Ep 1. **Podcast Offer** Use code whatsthejuice for 15% off Peace Juice and my Adrenal Recovery Formula as a thank you for listening.

Class is in session with this foundational episode that will help you understand the importance of every topic and interview ahead. We always hear that “stress” and “inflammation” are at the root of every illness, and that’s why we believe there’s power in learning the actual mechanisms by which they affect us. When we know what “stress” is and how to recognize it in the body, only then can we understand the steps needed to flip the script (and why genuine lifestyle changes are more valuable than any pill). Wellness doesn’t need to be expensive, and more than anything we need to change the way we treat ourselves. In this episode, Olivia unpacks the FOUR TRIGGERS that impact your body’s built-in stress response system, the “HPA axis.” This system includes your adrenals, and helps us explain why chronic fatigue is exploding. Expect to hear advice on sleep hygiene, optimizing melatonin production, brain detoxification, strengthening herbs for empathic people who are drained by their environment, as well as some eclectic takes on blue light, sunglasses, and your chakras.

Ep 57. Later this season, you’ll hear an ep about why I gave up caffeine—and how I needed to hold a “funeral” for my caffeine addiction, convincing all parts of my body that coffee needed to go. This week’s guest is the reason for that powerful moment, she sat with me while I layed on her table and finally let my dependency go! Julie Tracy is a craniosacral therapist, visceral manipulator, and lymphatic drainage therapist. She's also an integral part of my personal healing journey. If you remember my 28th birthday “dose of self-awareness” episode, Julie helped me to reconnect with my body and my heart during a time when I was feeling extremely lost and disconnected, by talking me through an exercise where I quite literally spoke to my organs (and had a campfire with them). Julie helps people release tension and emotions while teaching them how to fully connect with every part of their body. On the pod this week, she’ll share actionable ways and exercises to reestablish a brain-body connection, while teaching us how to communicate with our organs and get in tune with what our bodies need. 10 Mar 2025Why We Lie, When We Learned the Truth Was Unsafe & How to Rewire Safety with Nina Passero01:40:30

Ep 138. Have you ever wondered when we learn to stop being honest with ourselves, and how this teaches us to suppress our body’s signals? What if learning the truth is unsafe starts in our family systems — and how do we begin to tell the truth as adults? Nina Passero, FDN-P and my BFF is back on the pod! Nina has genuinely had one of the most intense journeys these past 6 years, from losing her beloved brother Matteo, to becoming a mother, to unpacking the taboo truths about grief that we never learn until we have to. This time, we are sitting down for a much more intimate chat. This is one of those conversations that speaks to the heart of our friendship. We’re breaking down the parallels between motherhood and grief, we dig into the strength of our friendship, why it’s lasted as long as it has, and the key factors that have kept it healthy. Nina is one of the best humans I know, and I’m so honored to be able to share this conversation with our community.

HERE'S THE JUICE:

  • Do we bring hidden expectations into friendships? The role of contracts in business, and friendship – why they might have more in common than you think

  • The importance of expanding our capacity to be with life and death – shifting your mindset to understand the importance of meditating on our own death and seeing life from a different perspective as a result

  • The profound importance of honesty in a friendship and the key reasons why we often struggle in friendships as adults – bringing it back to the root cause to identify if we are operating from a place of fear

  • Why do we often fail to see the interplay between intimacy and responsibility? This suggests that responsibility may be the thing we fear most

  • The difference between keeping score and maintaining healthy relational dynamics – It's 2025, we’re not keeping score

21 Jul 2023CAN WEIGHT LOSS & BODY POSITIVITY COEXIST? - Michelle Shapiro on restrictive diets, the “right way” to lose weight, and functional nutrition for anxiety & gut health01:42:41

Ep 80. This week's episode is with none other than the amazing Michelle Shapiro! In this insightful conversation, Michelle, a Holistic RD and self-proclaimed "Queen of the Middle Ground," shares her expertise after years of working with over a thousand clients. Michelle's approach to functional nutrition involves understanding the unique story of each individual, their environment, and the timeline that led them to their current situation. By identifying the root causes, she aims to heal issues rather than just managing them superficially. For instance, there's a big difference between avoiding certain foods for acid reflux versus understanding the deeper reasons behind the issue.

Here's the juice:

  • how Michelle lost 100lbs the WRONG way before becoming a dietitian (and how this led to hypothyroidism)
  • how almost anything that happens emotionally manifests physically, giving a whole new level of validation to symptoms that are "all in your head”
  • anxiety is a sacred messenger telling you something that needs to be addressed in your body (nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar dysregulation, etc.)
  • the root causes of anxiety and digestive disorders
  • what “intuitive eating” actually is + misconceptions
  • the extremes in the nutrition world of “no foods are toxic everything is a chemical" vs “all food must be perfectly clean”
  • why there are no “gut healing foods” that work for everyone
  • emotional and physical factors that contribute to binge eating and how to have compassion for our bodies trying to cope with big emotions

24 Mar 2025Solo Q&A: How to Embrace Change, Anxiety vs. Intuition and Breaking Generational Beliefs00:40:30

Ep 140. It’s time for our first solo Q&A of the new season! In this special episode, I'm diving deep into some of the most frequently asked questions straight from IG. Last week, I shared a story asking what topics you would want to discuss if we were sitting down at a café. The responses led to a heartfelt conversation about fear, change, and the importance of true friendship. I hope that some of these Qs can serve as food for thought in your life, just as they did in mine. Also, thank you so much to everyone who wrote in — I love hearing from you all and bringing more of your light into the What's The Juice community. Please continue to send us emails and DMs; your input helps us identify how to best serve you and create space for the topics you need support with. You can also send us an actual voice message with your questions through this link below!

Send a voice note for our next Q&A: https://www.speakpipe.com/WTJPodcast

HERE'S THE JUICE:

  • Moving from a place of fear into alignment might not be about conquering fear and a shift in perspective that can make all the difference

  • How can you make yourself comfortable with one of the most uncomfortable things a human goes through? We are hardwired to avoid change, so how can we learn to face change head-on?

  • Breaking down advice on long-term friendships and why so many relationships fall apart

  • The profound importance of identifying fear and intuition

  • What my most brutal ancestral pattern was to break, and the key to the beginning of my healing journey

  • The secret behind my most valuable tool for building self-discipline and how it reveals the progress you didn't know you were making

25 May 2020EP. #17 A REVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO LYME DISEASE — Richard Mandelbaum’s powerful philosophy on treating chronic illness01:39:00

THIS WEEK ON WHAT’S THE JUICE PODCAST

Unless you’re new here, you’ve most likely heard me gush about my experience at ArborVitae School of Traditional Herbalism. Now, I haven’t always been a total herb nerd. This interest of mine was first ignited when I started buying supplements on Amazon and it quickly spiraled into a full-blown passion that just won’t quit!

A few years ago I followed my gut to ArborVitae and I can say with 100% certainty that it was the right choice for me. I’ve learned SO much since I first started my program and it’s all thanks to my incredible, inspiring, brilliant teachers.

This episode of What’s The Juice is a super special one for me because I get to introduce you to someone I’ve mentioned many times before: Richard Mandelbaum. Richard and Claudia Keel founded ArborVitae, and they’re the quintessential yin and yang team. In herbalism speak, where Claudia is the flower essence, Richard is the spleen qi... and they are both major herbalist GOALS.

Richard’s classes are full of Chinese Medicine (be still my heart), and he’s always encouraging his students to look at human health in a balanced way. He’s a Leo — so it’s no wonder that I resonate with him — but it’s his Aquarius moon AND Aquarius rising that make him such an innovator. Not only did he co-found an herbalism school in New York City, he’s also playing a vital role in shifting the way modern medicine approaches Lyme disease.

Ready to get schooled by Richard Mandelbaum? (You’re gonna love it — I swear!)

25 Oct 2021VISION IS MORE THAN 20/20 - a mind blowing convo on why your personality, worldview + more relates to your eyesight with behavioral optometrist Dr. Bessler00:58:57

Ep 46. Vision is so much more than just seeing what's in front of you. It's about your eyes (which are part of your brain outside of your head) seeing the world, your goals, and processing the way you relate to others. Beyond that, vision "issues" are more than blurry letters, 20/20, or astigmatism, and can actually involve the way that your eyes either work together or fight each other, creating extra stress in your brain! I am so excited for you all to listen to this mind blowing conversation, because this guest is my very own eye doctor who has changed my life and the way I see things... LITERALLY. Meet Behavioral Optometrist Dr. Marni Bessler and get the juice on why vision is connected to things like ADHD, posture and personality, plus what vision struggles can tell us about the way your brain solves problems. "Vision is not just something that happens to us—it’s something we create once the info gets into our brain.”

06 Dec 2022NEURONS THAT FIRE TOGETHER WIRE TOGETHER — Neurophysiologist & coach Louisa Nicola on rewiring your brain to achieve peak physical & mental performance02:03:22

Ep 75. In this episode of What’s the Juice, I had the honor of chatting with brain-genius Louisa Nicola, Founder & Director of Neuro Athletics: a data-driven neuroscience company that provides athletes with scientific strategies to achieve peak performance. Tune in as we delve into the nitty gritty science of how the brain works, and what you can do specifically from home to optimize neuroplasticity and cognition, including:

SLEEP

  • Minimum 8 hours each night, following the 80% rule
  • Natural sunlight as soon as you wake up, for at least 5 minutes
  • Avoiding and/or dimming artificial light come evening
  • Pitch-black environment for optimal sleep

AEROBIC EXERCISE

  • Zone 2 Training — achieve about 65% of your maximum heart rate
  • For example: Walk an incline of ~8-10 around a speed of 3.8 mph for around 30 minutes

ANAEROBIC EXERCISE

  • Focus on 70% of your 1-repetition max (find the maximum weight you can handle for 1 rep, then use 70% of that weight for at least 6 sets/4 reps each)
  • Learn how to squat well and focus on compound movements
  • Invest in a trainer over supplements

STRESS

  • Inhale twice, then exhale (this mimics crying/hyperventilation)
  • Infrared light to reduce neural inflammation
  • Ice baths to create new mitochondria
  • Two grams of both EPA and DHA daily

18 Oct 2021POWERFUL LESSONS FROM A CLINICAL HERBALIST - why herbs from your heritage are potent + bringing pleasure back to healthcare with Kelsey Barrett00:57:18

Ep 45. This week's episode is an extra special treat for our fellow herb nerds, as I join forces with Clinical Herbalist and educator Kelsey Barrett to go above and beyond herbal medicine 101. You're going to want your notebooks for this one, as we cover everything from "energetics" to "tissue states" — for example, what's the difference between hot and dry muscle pain that aggravates you in the summer, vs cold and damp pain that flares up on a rainy day? We even chat about the power of our ancestral connection to herbs; Kelsey says that plants from your heritage & homeland can work deeper and faster... the body remembers.

Ep 54. Got hormone complaints? Feeling super frustrated and bloated before your period? Does it sometimes feel like you’re ‘stuck’ in life and can’t quite see your vision for the future or how to execute it? Is alcohol feeling harder and harder on your body as you get older?
