We covered things like his Asian American identity, how he spent a lot of his life doing what made sense to his family and to society without really thinking about himself and how he went through all that but is now going back to what he loves doing most which is music and content creation. She is a consultant full time and a content creator (Youtube) on the side as a hobby. In today’s episode, I talked to Tina about her passion topic, our relationships to our parents as children of Asian poc immigrants. We specifically talked about how Diaspora Asians can have a better relationship with their immigrant parents? For context, Tina feels that she has a pretty good relationship with her parents and would love to share her thoughts on how to do so and help others that are trying to improve their relationships with their own parents. Is it through listening and doing everything they tell you to do? Is it to try to explain your side of the story to them in the best way possible? OR, is it just to treat your parents like regular human beings that had lives before kids and try to understand where they are coming from? Listen and you will find out! We also talked about Tina’s creative pursuits with dancing and also now creating content on Youtube. She is an aspiring lifestyle Youtuber trying to make all sorts of different content and learning the craft. It is very cool, you should definitely check her out and subscribe to her channel! 25 Oct 2020 | 3.1-STAND YOUR GROUND AND TALK YOUR SHIT! FT. ROBIN (@CONROC) | 00:43:33
WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST S1E3 PART 1. I am back with another episode and this is going to be a very very special one. I have my good friend Robin on the podcast this episode to just shoot the shit with me. It was such a good time that we recorded over 3 hours of podcast material. That’s crazy when I usually just record 1 hour at most with my guests. So this is why our recording will be split into 2 parts. And this is part 1 of my conversation with Robin. To give you a brief intro of Robin, he’s a good friend of mine that I came to know from Jack from DIU Podcast. Robin is an all around creative guy that does so much creative stuff. He likes to Bboy, rap, make music, podcast, design, and pretty much anything that allows him to be creative. He is someone all about the feel good vibes and doing dope shit. In part 1 of our conversation we talk a lot about, social media and the good and the bad of it, how we need to not look at everything just on the surface level and be sure to ask questions, being confrontational and standing your ground when white people mess with you, Robin’s childhood where Asians were not cool and what got him into Hip Pop with MC Jin being his inspiration, freestyle battling people at school and how Filipinos are just so trendy all the time. We went pretty deep and we still have so much to cover in part 2 of our conversation so make sure to stay tuned for that when it drops. And if you want to follow Robin, check him out on Instagram at @conroc. And if you want to follow me on Instagram, you can at @kyle.lkhhk. Again thank you so much for listening and supporting the podcast. I really appreciate it. WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST S1E3 PART 2 Another episode with my good friend Robin (@conroc) where we continued to have deep talks. We talked a lot about mental health, seeking out therapy/professional health to help with figuring out what to do when feeling lost and not having direction in life during our adulthood. This podcast episode was all about feelings and talking about feelings which men in general are pretty bad at doing, so it was nice Robin and I were able to talk about our feelings to each so freely. We also talked about growing up in and Asian family in the west and about being old and how we still got to get out of our comfort zone in order to grow and improve. It was a great conversation, so don't miss out and listen to it! We went pretty deep again so make sure to listen to the whole episode. She recently released her song, Asian Enough that I came across that I relate to a lot. The song speaks to the feelings of many third culture kids on whether or not they are "Asian Enough" or should that even be a thing? In our conversation, we found out about Chara's background of moving around everywhere when she was a kid, living in England facing racism and culture shock that lead her to be quite pro-Asian and kind of Anti-White and how music was the thing that saved her when she was younger. Last but not least, we got into talking about Chara's creative journey and her road to being an independent singer-songwriter/producer trying to make it in Toronto while the world is going through the pandemic and all the social unrest. We definitely talked about her song, Asian Enough as well. Please support Chara and her music as it's always great to see Asian creatives pursuing their passion in the arts and given how she is creating content that really speaks to third culture kids makes her even more awesome. We got Benjamin Cheung, super smart Ph.D on the podcast to talk about acculturation, bicultural identity, diaspora identity, and everything about being Asian in the West! He got a wealth of knowledge that will open your eyes on being diaspora or seeing things from the POV of a diaspora if you aren't diaspora. Super cool stuff! Check it out and you can follow him on twitter for more of his super smart takes on everything! 26 Feb 2021 | 26 - The Power of Asian Media: Solidifying Asian American Identity w/Joanne Van | 00:59:38
Host: Kyle Leung (@kyle.lhkhk) https://linktr.ee/whatkindofasianareyoupod Guest: Joanne Van (@jovananne) https://www.instagram.com/jovananne/ Today I talked to Joanne Van, a digital marketer with an ethnic Chinese Vietnamese-American background that was born and raised in America. Her parents were born and raised in Vietnam (Diaspora Asians in their own right) that identifies more with being Chinese than Vietnamese. The interesting part of this would be that both Joanne and her parents actually never step foot in China. We went into the reasons why Joanne’s parents felt like this and how that contributed to Joanne’s own journey with her identity and cultural understanding of her own Chinese-Vietnamese culture mixed in with her Asian American identity. Joanne is also one that is very into Asian culture/media and we go into why that is and what she gets out of that. We also talked about her passion for creativity and business that led her to her career in digital and social media marketing. We talked about how her parents took that as it is not your normal career path. Last, we also talked about KPOP as Joanne is part of a company that is heavily involved in the KPOP music industry/community. She recommended a few KPOP acts to check out as well. Thank you for listening and make sure to follow the podcast on your streaming platform and also on Instagram at @whatkindofasianpod. Also, make sure to give this episode and the podcast in general a share to your friends and family. Last, please send me feedback for the podcast! I would love to read them! 11 Jan 2021 | 19-ADULTING IN 2021 FT. GAVIN AND JESS (SIBT.CA) | 01:05:28
EP 19 ADULTING IN 2021 FT. GAVIN AND JESS (SIBT.CA) Guests: Gavin and Jess (@auyeunggavin) (@hijessing) Chinese Born Canadians --------------------------------------------------------------------------- On this episode, I brought my good friend Gavin back on the podcast along with his girlfriend Jess. I have them on the podcast to talk about the process of growing up or "adulting" in 2021 as millennials being in their late 20s. The reason I decided to talk about this is because of them being new homeowners in Canada during the pandemic after less than 6 months of planning is such an "adulting" move in my opinion. We also got into "fengshui" when looking for houses, our love languages and how we communicate with our partners. And the most juicy part of the podcast would be about how their relationship started and what are the future plans for them moving forward now that Jess is a homeowner (proposal, marriage, wedding, etc???). Last, Gavin and Jess host their own podcast together called, Should I Buy This? a podcast where they ask their girlfriend/boyfriend if they should buy this product. It's a fun listen and can give you some suggestions on what to buy yourself. It's a fun one so make sure to listen and follow them and listen to their podcast Should I Buy This?. 17 Jul 2023 | FOODIE TALK | Tiffany Ran (Ba Ba Lio Taiwanese Pop Up) | #91 | 00:57:52
Today's episode features Tiffany Ran, Taiwanese American chef of Ba Ba Lio (886), BB6 Taiwanese Pop Up out in Seattle. "What are you making today?" "What does the market have?" After asking these questions, my mother on the other line would fill me in on the produce at the morning wet markets and on dishes bound for the dinner table. "Ba ba lio," or 8-8-6 in Chinese, is the international calling code to Taiwan, a string of numbers that tethers me to one home as I struggled to build another in a new city. BB6 Taiwanese Pop Up was born from homesickness and driven by discoveries. While our dishes are born of old Taiwan flavours, they're also peppered with new Pacific Northwest elements. I hope, from our meals, you'll discover new flavours and recall familiar ones. Please follow us and share your feelings, favourite dishes, and cravings with me. Taiwanese cuisine is, in part, about my experiences, but it's also yours. I am fortunate and so is Taiwan, to have your support! Thank you for listening!

23 May 2024 | What Does Being "Chinese" Mean in the Diaspora? + Asian Joy | Aydin Quach | #96 #aapiheritagemonth | 00:49:45
Today's episode features Aydin Quach(he/they). I was raised in what is now known as Vancouver on the traditional, ancestral, and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, səlilwətaɬ, and Skwxwú7mesh First Nations. I am an uninvited settler on their land. I come from a family of immigrants to Canada who themselves were immigrants to Southeast Asia, having lived in Southeast Asia for generations. My mother’s family is part of the Stateless Chinese population in Brunei Darussalam and my father is Chinese-Vietnamese from Vietnam. Drawing from my own identity as part of the Sinophone diaspora, I became interested in understanding how those who have complex migration histories understand their own identity. This is how I first got into the discipline of History and considered it as a prism through which I could develop and magnify my research questions. Questions around what is “Chinese” across the Sinophone diaspora are of particular interest to me. This extends of course as well to other intersections of my identity as well such as my position as a Queer Asian individual in academia. 03 Jun 2021 | (Bonus) Diaspora Hong Kongers Talk about the Hong Kong Protests 香港人加油!w/ Dr. Benjamin Cheung | 00:46:28
Host: Kyle Leung https://www.instagram.com/kyle.lkhhk/ Podcast Linktree https://linktr.ee/whatkindofasianareyoupod What Kind of Asian Are You? Podcast Instagram https://www.instagram.com/whatkindofasianpod/ @whatkindofasianpod Guest: Benjamin Cheung https://twitter.com/UBCDrBenCh Benjamin's Website https://blogs.ubc.ca/bycheung/ Just a little disclaimer before we get to the conversation that I had with Dr. Benjamin Cheung from UBC. Today’s episode is about the Hong Kong Protests that have been going on since 2019. The conversation goes into how both Benjamin and I see and feel about the Hong Kong Protests as we are both Diaspora Hong Kongers that immigrated to Canada before July 1, 1997. We also talk about the characteristics of those in support of the government versus those in support of pro-democracy and self-determination for Hong Kong. Last, we offered our thoughts on how Hong Kong will end up in the future and Benjamin’s words of encouragement for Hong Kongers still in Hong Kong. This conversation might go over your head if you are not familiar with what’s happening in Hong Kong so I would suggest reading up before listening and for those that are somehow affected by the Protests, this might be something you choose to avoid if it’s too triggering. Also, if you are those that have your mindset on how “bad” pro-democracy people are, feel free to skip this episode as well. Last, I would like to offer two Hong Kong-based organizations that you can check out and support. They are organizations set up to help those in Hong Kong that are in need and have been greatly affected by the Protests and now the pandemic. They are the marginalised ethnic minorities and refugees living in Hong Kong that are often not taken care of by the government and society. Please consider supporting them/sharing them on your platforms. The organizations are The Zubin Foundation and Grassroots Future. Thank you for listening. Now to the episode.
