07 Mar 2023All About the St. Patrick's Parade and Block Party with Milo Butterfingers' Tommy Donahue00:39:42

Did you know the parade is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit?  We didn't realize that either! Also, what does Mark Cuban have to do with the parade? Find out by listening.

The merchants on and around Greenville Ave. came together and formed the Greenville Avenue Area Business Association (G.A.A.B.A.) to help unify the businesses and promote the Greenville Avenue area. Its first objective is and always will be the presentation of the Annual Greenville Ave. St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

This parade is considered a Dallas tradition and is the largest St. Patrick’s Parade in the South.

Witnessing the Dallas St. Patrick’s Parade & Festival (formerly knows as the “Greenville Ave St. Patrick’s Parade) puts you in a quasi fraternity of sorts. It’s a little like going to Mardi Gras and then again not so much. This occasion is truly unique. The parade has become the signature event of the St. Patrick’s celebration for our fair city. Many Dallasites have attended and bared witness to the evolution of this neighborhood parade from about ten pickup trucks and a couple of flatbeds to the largest St. Patrick’s parade in the Southwest.

04 Apr 2023The Fascinating History of the Warren Ferris Cemetery00:43:29

Located in Dallas’ s Forest Hills neighborhood on the original homestead of pioneer Warren Angus Ferris, the 1847 Ferris Historic Cemetery is the final resting place of prominent early settlers. It is the mission of the Friends of the Warren Ferris Cemetery to recognize and honor those buried there, evolve an ongoing landscape restoration plan, and to beautify and maintain the landscape to the standards of a certified wildlife & monarch butterfly way station, and to promote environmental stewardship.

The Warren Angus Ferris Cemetery was established in the mid-1800s on the Ferris 640 acre homestead and was used by the Ferris family and the neighboring community. There is historical evidence that it also contained the graves of freedmen and possibly Latino residents.

31 May 2023A Community within a Community - The History of Juliette Fowler Communities00:46:34

In the late 1880’s, Juliette Peak Fowler dreamed of a community of care for widows and orphaned children. She traveled throughout the country researching social service agencies and learning their methods, but died before launching her dream. Her will specified that acreage she had purchased in East Dallas and a trust fund she had established were to be used for this purpose.

Today's podcast is about community and how a simple dream had a ripple effect through generations.

The remarkable history of Juliette Fowler Communities.

06 Jun 2023Juliette Fowler Part 2 - President & CEO Nicole Gann00:54:14

On today's Show, CEO Nicole Gann talks about Fowler Communities today.

In 2012, Gann joined the team at Fowler, where she has enjoyed working with youths as well as seniors and quickly noticed similarities between the two at-risk populations. She served as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer prior to becoming Chief Executive Officer in 2018. In this role, she is the visionary and strategist for the organization utilizing both her analytical and creative abilities. Gann’s expertise lies in her ability to not only manage numbers and strategy but also in her ability to develop ways to help others thrive.

For Gann, the mission of Juliette Fowler Communities is embedded in her heart. She can relate to Juliette Fowler’s selflessness of caring and capacity to move through grief. Fowler lost her husband and two small children but still found purpose. Not being able to have children of her own was a loss in Gann’s mind until she recognized that not all mothering and nurturing happens solely in the context of birthed children. There are many opportunities to give love to others, and she has found those in leading Juliette Fowler Communities.

13 Jun 2023What's in a Name Anyway?00:39:26

Let's talk history, food, naming... and whatever Seth Smith wants to talk about! What makes Lee Harvey's so cool? Well, you have to go to feel it! Trust us on that!

Other bars may have occupied 1807 Gould St. over the past half century, but the current owners managed to turn this withered watering hole into a place well worth the commute.

Remaining loyal to the original bar design, Lee Harvey’s kept the wood-paneled walls that showcase various classic, illuminated beer signs – some of which are older than the typical Friday night crowd. But don’t let the Friday night partiers fool you – Lee Harvey’s clientele isn’t limited to in-the-know hipsters. This South Dallas bar is home base for all kinds.

12 Sep 2023A Legend in the Restaurant Industry - Mike McRae!00:37:41

Mike is the creative mind behind the award-winning Table 13, a Sinatra-esque fine dining and entertainment experience in Addison. And he owns Dodie’s Cajun at The Harbor in Rockwall and at The Village in Allen. He even had a hand in Dick’s Last Resort in the West End until he sold it in 2021.

“McRae’s is the culmination of years of ideas that came together with a lot of teamwork, luck, long days and late nights,” says Mike, who saw an opportunity to manifest his vision in the unfinished lounge space left by a previous tenant. “I took it over because this is my neighborhood; it’s where McRae’s was meant to be. And the best part is having so many guests tell us we’re a great addition to the community.”

25 Oct 2023All About the White Rock Lake Foundation00:38:14

The White Rock Lake Foundation is instrumental in presenting the case for the maintenance and improvement of White Rock Lake. It coordinates public relations efforts, serves as a unified advocacy group before the Dallas City Council, acts in close and effective cooperation with the Dallas Park and Recreation Board to assist in long-term planning and design, and spearheads private fundraising efforts.

The White Rock Lake Foundation got its start in 1989, when a concerned group of citizens formed the foundation out of concern for the lake. Friends’ first task was to have the dredging project for the lake placed on the upcoming bond election. Friends was among several similarly concerned groups who pleaded the case before the Dallas City Council, with successful results: the issue was placed on the bond referendum and in May 1995, Dallas voters overwhelmingly approved a $18 million dollar bond issue to dredge White Rock Lake and restore it to a healthy, life-sustaining depth by the end of the 20th century.
