In the least shocking news you could imagine, Donald Trump was acquitted in the senate because our constitution is a garbage document that allows for infinity crimes. This is not a surprise to anyone, but one thing that did surprise us was the weird fixation on Alexander Vindman, particularly on Fox News. In fact, Pete Hegseth brought on Medal of Honor recipient Leroy Petry to tell the world that, according to some guy, Vindman was a spotlight ranger and a chow thief in Ranger School.

This week, we spoke with 82nd Airborne veteran Michael McGuinness (@beardedcynic473) about a story he knows particularly well: the saga of Clint Lorance, an Army officer convicted of murder in Afghanistan and sentenced to 18 years in prison. As you may know, every war criminal in military prison wants to get RT’ed into Trump’s timeline in hopes of getting a pardon. Michael served with Clint Lorance, witnessed his war crimes, and reported him. Then the real story began.

Spycops may not be a familiar story to American listeners, but the summarized version is: the British state has recently admitted to using secret deep-cover police to infiltrate activist groups for over 30 years, using stolen identities and encouraging officers to enter into relationships with activists (to include fathering children) only to abandon them once their mission ended.

As Tom's interview reveals, the details are even more unsettling than what's summarized above.

Donald Trump is at war with the generals. Well, not really, but he’s a big idiot and is lashing out at anyone he thinks is criticizing him -- which has led him to make the statement that the military rank-and-file love him, but the top brass don’t because they just want to go to war in order to make money for defense contractors.

Now, we’re not saying we agree with him, and we don’t endorse him in any capacity, but this is perhaps an example of why our big wet baby leader is right for the wrong reasons. Because yes, when you get down to it, it does all seem like one big money-making enterprise.

The latest scandal in the military news world is the NYT publishing an op-ed from Taliban deputy commander Sirajuddin Haqqani. In this more-or-less anodyne editorial, Haqqani lays out his reasoning for entering peace talks with the US. This has of course caused a certain type of online veteran to explode into white-hot diarrhea fragments, ignoring the fact that the NYT has previously published op-eds from people like Erik Prince and Erick Erickson, both insane Christian dominionists. But hey, who’s counting?

Anthony is a public school teacher, was born and raised in the Chicago area, and spent 6 years in the Air Force. The military is an authoritarian hellworld, sure, but there are ways to navigate it. In this week’s episode, Nate and Francis discuss a recent op-ed arguing on behalf of the junior enlisted community -- basically, arguing that perhaps the military (in this case, the Marine Corps) should treat privates as more than window lickers. It’s hard riding a tiger. It’s even harder if you’re McHooyah the ‘I Shot Bin Laden’ guy and the Trump/QAnon people decide that actually Bin Laden is still alive because of a conspiracy theory. However, this does in fact dovetail into Francis’ theory that--due to the preponderance of cop-worship in the Trump era--troops are playing second fiddle to cops in the eyes of bonkers Americans.

In this week's episode of What a Hell of a Way to Die, Nate, Francis, and Adrian have come to the realization that we’ve been doing this show for two years now. So, in honor of this milestone, and in honor of the fact that we recorded this on Veterans’ Day weekend, we discuss how we came to our current politics. Before that, however, we have a long discussion about the difference between Armistice Day, Remembrance Sunday, and what the US now calls Veterans Day. Nate also gives his best attempt to explain the British phenomenon of poppy-mania.

After two years’ worth of hard work, our long-suffering producer Karl Morand is moving onto bigger and better things. Moving forward, Nate is taking over as the producer. We thank Karl for his excellent work and incredible patience.
