02 Oct 2024Unlocking the Secrets of Mitochondrial Health with Dr. Anurag Singh00:41:44

"Mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells, and if we don’t keep them in check, we risk losing the energy, strength, and vitality that allow us to age powerfully." - Dr. Anurag Singh

In this energizing episode of the Well Beyond 40 podcast, I sit down with Dr. Anurag Singh, a pioneering expert in mitochondrial health, to dive deep into the science that can help us all age with power. As the Chief Medical Officer at Timeline, Dr. Singh has spearheaded over 50 clinical trials, focusing on groundbreaking ways to keep our cellular engines—the mitochondria—running optimally well beyond our 40s.

We explore the fascinating compound Urolithin A, which I call “exercise in a bottle.” Urolithin A is derived from foods like pomegranates and walnuts, and plays a critical role in maintaining muscle health, boosting energy levels, and even improving skin quality as we age. Dr. Singh sheds light on the alarming statistics of muscle loss starting in our 30s and how it accelerates into our 60s and 70s. He offers actionable strategies that go beyond just increasing protein intake and resistance training, emphasizing the importance of using every tool available, including Urolithin A, to combat the decline.

For those navigating the world of GLP-1 agonists for weight loss, Dr. Singh provides essential insights into how these medications impact muscle mass and mitochondria. His advice is clear: while these drugs can be effective, they must be coupled with proper nutrition, exercise, and mitochondrial support to prevent long-term muscle loss and metabolic issues.

Tune in to discover how you can harness the power of your mitochondria to not only live longer but to live stronger, with more energy and resilience, well into your later years. Don't miss this chance to learn how to integrate cutting-edge science into your daily routine for a healthier, more vibrant you!

25 Jul 2022[Beginnings & Breakthroughs] Gut Healing + Getting Back on Track with Donna Barber00:54:20

For many people, the pandemic was a catalyst to make positive changes and level up their diet and lifestyle habits. For others, it was an unexpected setback on the journey to a healthy weight and body. Tune in as JJ talks with longtime Virgin Diet advocate Donna Barber about her powerful first experience with The Virgin Diet, how living through a pandemic impacted her eating habits, and why supporting her gut will be critical in the days to come.

When she worked as a librarian, Donna would notice that the most popular topics people would search for were health and weight loss. One day, a woman dropped a book in front of her that changed her life forever: The Virgin Diet. "I kept picking it up and putting it down, thinking it was probably just another gimmick," shared Donna. But after following the plan for a week, she lost 7 pounds. And after four months, she lost 30 pounds—and says it was like winning the lottery.

But Donna, like a lot of folks, struggled during the pandemic. Stuck at home, she found it harder and harder to eat well and stick to her healthy habits… and the weight crept back on. She also had a history of digestive issues that sometimes made it difficult to eat the right foods. Now, with knee surgery on the horizon and gut health a #1 priority, she asked JJ to help her create a roadmap to a healthier gut and body.

Their eye-opening conversation will change the way you look at weight loss and health, and it may just provide the answers you've been looking for on your own personal wellness journey. Listen as JJ delivers easy-to-implement but critically important strategies based on Donna's unique needs—from the best foods and supplements to the best ways to exercise and strengthen her body. JJ also shares her own experience with maintaining health before and after major surgery, so you don't want to miss her recommendations!

22 Aug 2022[Beginnings & Breakthroughs] Helping the Gut After Food Intolerance with Nicoleta Borcos00:28:37

What do you do after you figure out your food intolerances? In this episode of Beginnings & Breakthroughs, JJ coaches Nicoleta, a community member whose Virgin Diet experience led her to discover multiple food sensitivities—and lose 30 pounds in the process.

Bloating, stomach pain, gas, digestive upset—these were all things Nicoleta was dealing with prior to going on The Virgin Diet. After eliminating the Hi-FI foods in Cycle 1 and experiencing weight loss, better sleep, and many other amazing benefits, she reintroduced the foods only to discover she didn't really have a problem with them; that is unless she continued to eat those foods every day. Suddenly the gut symptoms were back.

The dose makes the poison, as they say. JJ advises on what to do in this situation, and shares simple gut health hacks Nicoleta (and you!) can do to improve symptoms so she may be able to occasionally enjoy certain foods without any digestive trouble.

You'll learn about foods that can trigger autoimmune symptoms and leaky gut (and the gut-healthy foods to swap them with), why balanced gut flora is so important to health and weight loss goals, and the dramatic changes you can experience in your gut health when you commit to a stress-reducing meditation practice.

14 Aug 2024Unlocking the Secrets of Liver Health with Kristin Kirkpatrick00:44:30

"Your liver is amazing. You can renew it. You can regenerate it." - Kristin Kirkpatrick

In this episode of Well Beyond 40, I had the pleasure of discussing a silent yet widespread health issue with Kristin Kirkpatrick, a renowned Registered Dietitian and bestselling author. Together, we unpacked the hidden epidemic of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which affects a surprising 1 in 4 people, and its profound impact on metabolic health. Kristin's new book, "Discover Your Metabolic Type and Renew Your Liver for Life," sheds light on how prevalent this condition is and provides a comprehensive guide to reversing its effects.

Kristin's journey into liver health began with a realization in her practice: countless patients were unaware of the severity of their liver conditions due to a lack of definitive guidance. She emphasizes that even without symptoms, elevated liver enzymes can signal trouble. 17 Feb 2023Top 5 Foods to Boost Metabolism Naturally for Women Over 4000:11:01

Myth debunked: your metabolism doesn't slow down automatically with age. But there are a few factors you need to consider that can have a negative impact. In this episode, I discuss why you might have a slow metabolism, the two things you want to check if you’re over 40, and steps you can take to have a faster metabolism.

If you want to lose weight, you must make sure you’re holding on to muscle mass and getting optimal protein in your diet. I discuss how you can accomplish both. Another important, but often overlooked, factor to address is low thyroid function.

In this episode, I highlight specific spices, beverages, and foods that are shown to support a healthy blood-sugar response to a meal, help burn fat, and support a healthy metabolism. You don’t want to miss the daily beverage I drink that can promote fat and calorie burning... even at rest.

To avoid weight struggles, hair loss, mood disruptions, and other challenges women often experience with age, you must take steps to maintain a healthy metabolism. It’s worth it—because when you embrace aging powerfully, you can feel great in your 40s and beyond!

12 Oct 2022Rewriting Your Food Story with Elise Museles00:38:38

We all have a story. There are moments in our lives and in our upbringing that make us who we are and that guide our unconscious behaviors. This interview with Elise Museles helps us bring those behaviors to the forefront so we can make more intentional decisions around food.

Elise is the author of Food Story: Rewrite the Way You Eat, Think, and Live. She shares her story about healing from eating perfectionism, something many of us get sidetracked with when trying to follow a healthy diet. Her training in eating psychology transformed her outlook on food and she no longer stresses about her dietary choices, and she shares her wisdom on how you can do it, too.

You'll learn about how "food noise" and diet culture disconnect us from our body's signals, how stress (especially about eating) plays a role in how well you're able to absorb nutrients, and the benefits of intuitive eating for having a more relaxed and intentional relationship with food.

Plus, Elise and JJ talk about how to avoid slipping back into old habits like emotional eating and stress eating—because changing your routine might be easy at first, but sticking to it is the real challenge.

Discover your own food story to change your narrative and change your life.

World-renowned neuroscientist and neuro-nutritionist Dr. Lisa Mosconi joins JJ today as they discuss a vitally important topic: women’s brain health. Dr. Lisa and JJ discuss the roles of estrogen in the body and the brain, as well as the connection between menopause and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Many factors contribute to risk for Alzheimer’s, but a lot of them boil down to inflammation, and adjusting lifestyle can help reduce the risk. JJ and Dr. Lisa also discuss foods that are harmful and foods that are helpful in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

In this episode, we're diving deep into the science of building muscle and speeding up those gains! If you're tired of feeling like progress is at a snail's pace, I've got three proven strategies that will help you see results faster.

First up, we're talking nutrition and the critical role of protein in muscle synthesis. Discover how optimal protein intake, especially the right amount of leucine, can trigger muscle growth. Plus, I've got a free 7-day protein challenge waiting for you at jjvirgin.com/7day to kickstart your journey.

I'll share my personal experiments with fasted versus non-fasted workouts and why timing your carbs and protein around your exercise sessions is crucial for maximizing muscle gains.

Supplements can make a significant difference, and I'll highlight the heavy hitters like creatine, vitamin D, and fish oil. Learn which supplemennt can supercharge your energy during high-intensity workouts, why vitamin D is essential for muscle function, and the muscle-building benefits of omega-3s from fish oil. Plus, I'll introduce you to a supplement that enhances mitochondrial health for better endurance and recovery.

Finally, we'll touch on the importance of hormones like thyroid and estrogen in muscle building. Balancing these hormones can significantly impact your strength and muscle growth. Whether you're navigating perimenopause, recovering from a concussion, or simply wanting to maintain sharp cognitive function, this episode delivers actionable strategies to protect and enhance your brain health.

What you'll learn:

  • The surprising connection between leaky gut and leaky brain, and why women in perimenopause may be particularly vulnerable

  • How to recognize the warning signs of a compromised blood-brain barrier, from brain fog to unexplained cognitive fluctuations

  • The 5 essential pillars of brain health, including specific foods that nourish your neurons

  • Why social connections and regular movement (especially dancing!) are crucial for preventing cognitive decline

30 Jun 20245 Mistakes Women Over 40 Make With Fat Loss (+ Easy Fixes!)00:11:15

Are you putting in the effort but not seeing the results you deserve? In today’s episode, we’re diving into the common pitfalls that might be sabotaging your fat-loss journey. It’s not your fault! Some surprisingly simple, yet often overlooked, mistakes can trip up your progress.

First off, are you getting enough of the right nutrients? Many of us don’t realize that during caloric restriction, adequate amounts of certain macronutrients are crucial for keeping hunger at bay and preserving muscle mass.

Another biggie is activity level. When you cut calories, your body naturally tries to conserve energy, leading to decreased movement. This can significantly impact your fat-loss efforts. I’ll provide practical tips on how to keep your activity levels up throughout the day, even incorporating simple changes like standing more or taking walking meetings.

We’ll also touch on the importance of hydration, resistance training, and accurately tracking your food intake. I’ve got you covered with actionable steps to ensure you stay hydrated, build muscle, and keep your metabolism revved up.

Join me for a deep dive into these five critical mistakes and learn how to avoid them for optimal fat loss. Let’s transform those struggles into successes together.

Having trouble kicking the sugar addiction, even when you're doing all the right things? You'll want to listen to this new episode of our Breakthroughs & Beginnings series, where JJ coaches community members on overcoming roadblocks on their path to better health.

Before she went through The Virgin Diet, Alicia was experiencing weight loss resistance, thyroid issues, angry and anxious moods, and more. After discovering some of her food intolerances, she was able to lose a total of 25 pounds, boost her energy, approach her day more calmly, and maintain a healthy thyroid.

But she is still dealing with nagging sugar cravings! Listen as JJ offers advice on using a protein-first approach to kicking sugar, how to use a body composition scale and the right markers to track with it, the right exercises to improve muscle mass, suggested supplements for overcoming cravings, and small tweaks Alicia can make with her diet to avoid disrupting autophagy.

Plus, you'll learn how poor sleep impacts appetite, and JJ's best tips for ensuring optimal protein intake throughout the day.

02 Oct 2019Declare Yourself Successful with Bo Eason00:32:59

NFL football player, speaker and leadership coach, Bo Eason joins JJ today to discuss the importance of having big dreams. He explains the difference between setting goals and declaring yourself, and why declarations are so much more powerful. Declarations are long term and inform every aspect of our lives. They’ll talk about how important creating a successful environment is, including surrounding ourselves with people with common ambitions. Bo and JJ discuss how setbacks are just part of the process, and how overcoming obstacles makes us even stronger.

Main Points From Today’s Episode

  1. To be successful, you need to make a declaration. A goal is short term but a declaration informs everything we do in our lives.
  2. One of the major components to this is creating an environment for success. You must surround yourself with people who are on the same page as you are.
  3. When you fall off track, you just have to do some course correcting. The important thing is to let go of any shame and stay focused on that declaration.

Episode Play-By-Play

[5:22] Bo discusses what inspired his determination to become the best NFL safety in the world.

[7:28] Even though it’s very inspirational, there are listeners who may not want to become football players...How can you apply these lessons to yourself?

[8:04] JJ shows how you can use Bo’s example and lessons to become the healthiest you.

[8:40] Why the word declaration instead of goal? Bo explains the difference between a declaration and a goal.

[10:54] If you live like a healthy, lean person, you will become that, over time.

[11:05] Bo explains how he made his declaration at 9 years old. He wasn’t going to be the best safety at 9 years old, but he began living like he was.

[11:50] Why you should get rid of your goals, and make a declaration instead.

[12:20] One of the major components to this is creating an environment for success. You can’t lose weight if you are surrounded by people who don’t care about what is important to you.

[13:40] Bo gives an example of one of his friends who is the 7th fastest recorded runner. Who do you think he hangs out with?

[15:08] You get to decide if you want to be super healthy, or to stay mediocre and keep the body you have now. Once you make your declaration, watch the magic happen!

[16:49] When you go off track, you just have to do some course correcting.

[18:00] What we can learn from a plane’s automatic pilot mechanism

[18:50] Bo explains why he loves obstacles.

[20:55] How JJ’s friend Nicole overcame her body image issues

[22:00] When you give yourself a big obstacle, one of the positive side effects is how much confidence and self worth you gain just from the daily process of overcoming challenges.

[25:00] How instant gratification can hurt us

[25:24] The big things that you look back on in your life are the things that took a lot of work.

[25:50] To help you begin, Bo has a new book, There’s No Plan B for Your A-Game and he’s offering the first chapter free. Just go to jjvirgin.com/bo to download.

[27:48] Why are so many successful people super healthy?

[28:41] JJ’s challenges for you:

(1) Make a declaration rather than a goal.

(2) Give yourself realistic timelines.

(3) Create a no-fail environment.

26 Oct 2022Using Your DNA to Hack Weight & Nutrition with Kashif Khan00:58:56

Have you ever wondered why you eat a healthy diet but can’t lose weight? Or maybe you’re curious about what steps you should take to prevent disease, slow aging, and perform at your best. The answers lie in the 22,000 genes that make up your genetic code. In this informative episode of Ask the Health Expert, JJ speaks with Kashif Khan. Khan is CEO of the DNA Company, where unique insights into the human genome pioneer personalized medicine.

Here, Khan discusses how your unique DNA can become your personal roadmap to living healthily. Listen as he shares his personal story about how being sensitive to pollutants created crazy migraines (so bad he had to be driven home from work), eczema, psoriasis, depression, and gut issues. Determined to find solutions, he looked through his own genome to find root causes.

What he discovered was fascinating. You’ll learn why your DNA is your body’s instruction manual, how genes determine how you lose weight, how a toxic burden can impede sleep, and why healthcare gets female hormone health wrong. Plus, Khan discusses the single reason why you can't lose weight (even when you’re doing everything right), how a genetic predisposition can determine hunger and cravings, and how to stop stress eating.

Genetic testing can pinpoint what you need to do with diet, lifestyle, and environment to live longer… and live longer better. Whether you’re struggling to lose weight, want to reduce your risk of disease and live longer, or you’re curious about how genetic testing can support things like sleep, diet, hormones, fitness, mood, and immunity, you won’t want to miss this information-packed epis
