23 Jun 2020 | #171 - Danny Pound (Vitreous Humor, The Regrets) | 01:11:05
Today, we welcome Danny Pound from Vitreous Humor and The Regrets. In this podcast, I’ve tried to go back and find the origin, the meaning, and the stories behind this genre. In this episode, we go back to the start with Danny Pound. Danny’s band Vitreous Humor in the late 80s was the first band signed to Crank! Records and also their first release in 1994. Along with Boys Life, they were some of the first bands from this label out of the gate for a time that was hugely influential to me. The band broke up before I had a chance to see them and along with The Regrets, bucked the trend of what was supposed to be emo, thoughts around it and one of the true pioneers in this scene. They aren’t talked about enough and the best part, Danny is still making music today. Learn more at DannyPound.Bandcamp.com

13 Mar 2023 | #216 - Jake Brennan (Disgraceland, Cast Iron Hike) | 01:04:16
Today on the podcast we welcome Jake Brennan. I’ve wanted Jake on the podcast for years! You may know him from his podcast Disgraceland or as a member of the band Cast Iron Hike. He also started Double Elvis, a podcast network that I’m a part of. So full disclosure, we’re partners but that being said, I’ve probably had Jake on my wishlist since I started the podcast. We get into a lot about intention and what drives creators like Jake and others. He is in such a great place doing something he loves and it came out of intent. We discuss Fugazi, storytelling, origins of why he tells the stories he does and what his favorite sport is. A truly great conversation with Jake on being a creator and you know it, we talked about when he heard the word emo and his thoughts around it.

30 May 2023 | #226 - Jeff Caudill (Low Coast, Gameface) | 00:44:29
Today on the podcast we welcome again Jeff Caudill from Gameface and his new band called Low Coast. They have an album out right now called Existing the Dream out on Spartan Records. Think Death Cab for Cutie meets Wilco. What was great is that Jeff and I did this in person and was so nice after so many interviews have been done remote.

05 Jun 2023 | #227 - Michael Malarkey (Burial Clouds, Shadyside) | 00:56:50
Today on the podcast we welcome back Michael Malarkey. I had him on episode 197 and we’re back again to chat about his new music with the group Burial Clouds. Michael, especially on Instagram, is always first to comment on an an obscure screamo band from the 90s. We caught up about some of his fav bands from the 90s ear, what he has to do before every show or play he performs. We talk festivals for a bit and how he handed Jake Bannon from Converge his demo when he was 20 years old. Plus get stoked on Botch and how getting called for movie or tv gigs messes up his show plans.

06 Nov 2023 | #236 - Nicholas Pye (Shotmaker) | 00:57:47
Today, we welcome Nicholas Pye from the mid-90s band Shotmaker. Recently, Solid Brass compiled all of their music into some beautiful vinyl and digital releases for your ears. They are a fantastic band that was only around for a short period of time, but their sound and influence still resonate today.

13 Jun 2022 | #205 - Kip Uhlhorn (The Red Scare, Panthers, Cloudland Canyon) | 01:28:05
Today on the podcast, we welcome Kip Uhlhorn from The Red Scare, Panthers and Cloudland Canyon. We speak about emo and hardcore from the late 90s and the many ways that I can sneak in another band that was screamo during that era. Kip has a long history of being in the industry across scoring and bands from the 90s through today. I encourage you to search out and find his music and head over to KipUhlhorn.com

17 Jan 2023 | #209 - Erik Fisher (The Hated) | 01:57:50
Today on the podcast, we welcome Erik Fisher from The Hated. The Hated were a 4 piece emo band from Annapolis Maryland who were active from 1985-1990. They are considered an early emo band and around the same time as many we know like Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, and Moss Icon. Thankfully, Numero Group has their music streaming and available. Go search it out.
Now to the interview. For those that have been in college or had a really great teacher in high school perhaps. This is for you. That one class that you felt so engaged with someone and the flow back and forth on ideas kept on a path that enlightened both the student and the teacher. I let this one stay more open than usual because the flow of this with Erik, who is a professor by profession, is glorious to listen back on. If you haven’t had a class like this before, this is close to it. When the bell rings, you felt you could take on the world and a new appreciation for what you just learned. I learned so much talking to Erik about his perspective on emo, his band, and music and philosophy. My favorite part is when Erik talks about seeing Rites of Spring for the first time. Holy shit, fucking epic. I can’t wait for you to listen.

01 Mar 2021 | #188 - Ryan Ferguson (No Knife) | 01:40:36
Today, we welcome guitarist and singer from Ryan Ferguson from the band No Knife. I had Mitch Wilson (the other half of the guitar vocals of No Knife) on episode 153 and today, we welcome in Ryan. We talk a lot about his music both solo and No Knife, the scene, and I sorta didn’t realize but I read a super low Pitchfork review of one of his solo albums that Ryan never knew they reviewed or read it. So I read the review and you’ll hear how that turned out. If you haven’t heard No Knife or Ryan’s solo stuff, give it a try. An absolute unique sound and their records never sound old to me whenever they come on… No Knife were one of the best bands ever to come out of San Diego and I’m so happy Ryan spent some time to chat about it
EDIT: 3/1/21: Not Ken Griffey, Jr. it was Barry Larkin. Ken Griffey Jr. played for the Mariner’s farm system which was a few years later.

11 Sep 2023 | #233 - Antarctica (Eric Richter, Glenn Maryansky) | 01:03:42
Today on the podcast, we welcome Eric Richter and Glenn Maryansky from the band Antarctica. Eric was in Christie Front Drive and has been on the podcast before. Eric had this other band with an amazing group of musicians in the late 90s in NYC that went more toward the NYC electronic scene and more Underworld, New Order, The Cure, Ride, etc. At the time, it was largely forgotten. Solid Brass Records is getting this stuff online for everyone to enjoy.

10 Mar 2025 | #257 - Chris Simpson (Mountain Time, Mineral, The Gloria Record) | 01:33:38
Today we have back for a 3rd time, Chris Simpson. He recently released a new Mountain Time album called “Dream Homes” on Spartan Records. We talk about the album and really go deep on the making of and the artwork.
We also talk about death, planning, and doing things out of love.
Lastly you can tell we’ve spoken a lot as it’s just a lot of jokes and sorta feels like we just recorded one of many conversations together over the years.
I could not be more proud to speak with Chris and know he’s still making music. It’s a gift.

17 Jun 2024 | #242 - David Mitchell (Gulfer) | 01:20:03
Today on the podcast, we welcome David Mitchell from the Montreal-based band Gulfer. I have loved them since I first heard them in the 2010s. I’ve had a soft spot for their sound and continued work ethic to make music through things that happen in life. Their most recent album, out as of late February, is called Third Wind, and boy, do we get on the chats about waves of emo and the in-between waves as well. Thanks to Topshelf Records, the excellent label that helped put this interview together. Go check out Gulfer. It's a gem worth taking repeated spins in the car with the windows rolled down.

12 Oct 2020 | #177 - Conor Oberst | 01:19:10
Today, we welcome a legend, Conor Mullen Oberst to the podcast. No, I didn’t just add my last name to his name, that’s his actual middle name and we talk about it and no, we discussed it. We are not related.
Mr Oberst was very gracious with his time while having some work done on his house, which you’ll hear at times during the podcast. It was an honor to discuss such life changing events as seeing Fugazi when he was 11 and the first time he heard the word emo at 16. We also chat about his feelings on the word emo and his association with it when his sound was traveling the opposite way. What I loved most about this interview was Conor’s openness. He was willing to discuss at length his history and what he’s trying to pass on as not just as a musician but as a human. We then spent time on Bright Eye’s legacy as the band turns 25 this year and what he thinks about himself and what the future holds.

07 Feb 2022 | #204 - Sonny Kay (Angel Hair, The VSS, GSL) | 01:19:02
Today on the podcast we welcome an absolute legend. Sonny Kay. You may know Sonny from Angel Hair which put out records on Gravity Records or his own label Gold Standard Laboratories or maybe The VSS. If not, that is totally fine. You’ll learn about them all and other projects he was a part of over the next hour or so. Sonny is a pillar in the early days of emo/screamo/hardcore that shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s someone that even if you haven’t heard his bands, you’ve seen his work as an artist for The Mars Volta and many others. I can’t stress enough how much I implore you to search Sonny out, his music, his art and projects. Learn more about Sonny at SonnyKay dot com. Sit back and listen to one of the original legends. It’s an absolute honor to have him on the podcast.

20 Aug 2020 | #175 - Thomas Barnett (Strike Anywhere, Inquisition) | 01:21:19
Today on the podcast we welcome Thomas Barnett from Strike Anywhere. A legend in the punk scene and someone that I’ve been following since 1999 when I first heard Strike Anywhere and their brand of political punk from Richmond, VA.
When Thomas from Strike Anywhere first jumped on the phone with me said he was shy and not really a good talker. Well, he was completely wrong and I just sat back for most of this interview and listened to the master who has been going to shows since the 80s. he talked about learning how to put on shows at a barn on the outskirts of Richmond Virginia, and spoke passionately about what first bands he saw that shaped his life and his previous band Inquisition. I did a lot of editing myself out, yes, even the giggles. It was funny thought listening back to this interview and going, “yea don’t need to hear me talk there.”
I was absolutely honored to have someone like Thomas take time to chat about the history of the “scene” in quotes and what shapes the scene and yourself. We of course talk about emo, don’t worry, but as you know, my love of hardcore runs deep so to hear him talk about the Richmond, Virginia scene, his life now and the band Strike Anywhere is still around! Their most recent album is out on Pure Noise Records now called “Nightmares of the West.” Definitely go check that out and as we all know and you’ve heard me preach, emo has many tentacles and a long history. A big part of the history that isn’t talked about enough is hardcore and punk. Hardcore intersects with emo so much that having Thomas on to school me on the history was amazing to experience.

26 Jun 2023 | #229 - Colin McCann (Don Martin Three, Vulture Feather, Wilderness) | 01:09:49
Today on the podcast we welcome Colin McCann from Don Martin Three, Vulture Feather and Wilderness. Don Martin Three were from St Augustine Florida from the years 1993 to 1996. If you’re a fan of Moss Icon, Indian Summer and Policy Of 3. Screaming, quiet loud parts, and amazing guitar work, this is a band to listen to. We talk about that time and the bands from the 90s when the word didn’t mean much.
We then get into Vulture Feather, a new album called Liminal Fields is out now and one of the best albums of the year. So search it out. We talk about the meaning behind the band and struggles Colin had before making music again.
This was a beautiful conversation with someone I never expected to reach out and happy they did.

If not, his popular podcast Going Off Track or you've probably seen him in the band United Nations playing guitar… Now that I think of it, you can’t get away from him. That aside… If you’ve ever thought about writing about your favorite music and living to tell about it and keep your friends, well most of them, you’ll certainly enjoy this episode.

14 Nov 2022 | #208 - Justin Pearson (Three One G, Swing Kids, The Locust) | 01:14:19
Today we welcome Justin Pearson. If that name is unfamiliar, head to Three One G dot com right now. Justin was and is a musical force. He’s been in a lot of projects over the years and worth diving into his work now with Dead Cross, Deaf Club or where I found out about him when I was younger with Swing Kids and then The Locust. Justin was a little older than me and hearing about his history with punk, hardcore, and the word emo was again eye opening for me as someone that only knows so much. Justin was honest and open about how he felt about the scene and is an inspiration for myself and hopefully you after listening to this interview. Again, search out Three One G, we’ll have links on Washed Up Emo dot com and dive into him if you’ve never heard about him or ride alongside with the emo nerd and get schooled from a legend.

08 Feb 2016 | #57 - Jon Bunch (Sense Field, Further Seems Forever, Lucky Scars, War Generation, Reason to Believe) | 01:09:11
I will never forget that the first thing Jon did when he picked up the phone for the podcast. He asked about my life and took the time to find out more about Washed Up Emo before the interview even started. I was blown away at how humble he was but also so proud of his life's work. It’s an honor to be able to present a small slice of Jon that many of his friends and family know so well. I count myself included. This podcast is supposed to be evergreen. You can listen in 5 years or in 10 years and know a good chunk of that band or era and some context to the scene and a way to look back but also look ahead. Jon was that last point to a T. He was so happy talking about the history but also his new music and what was next. Sadly, this was the last interview Jon did. I can only hope those close or those who have no idea who Jon Bunch was take and learn something from one of the most important voices in not only the independent scene but music in general. I am eternally grateful Jon took the time to talk with me about his life that will thankfully live on in aural form so someone can stumble upon Jon's music forever.

21 Feb 2016 | #58 - Kenny Vasoli (The Starting Line) | 01:00:01
You can thank Cloud Nothings and Desaparecidos for The Starting Line’s most recent 7” entitled “Anyways.” Kenny spoke highly of those two bands and how it got him excited to write in the style of The Starting Line again. It’s only fitting that Kenny is the next podcast after Jon Bunch spoke so highly of him in episode 57. Kenny straddles that line of being old enough to know the past but be involved in the mid 00 emo wave and has some amazing perspective on it. I learned a lot and have a great respect for his music.

13 Feb 2023 | #213 - Ken Shipley (Numero Group, Tree Records) | 00:59:04
Today on the podcast we welcome Ken Shipley from Numero Group and Tree Records. Many may know Numero Group for their fantastic reissues and they have a show coming up this weekend in LA celebrating 20 years called Numero 20. A very special show with bands we’ve featured on the podcast the last few weeks and more to come. What we’re going to touch on more for this episode is how he got to Numero and his first experiences figuring out the world of record making under the name Tree Records. A fantastic run of releases highlighted by a series called Post Marked Stamps that put many bands we love in the emo genre on the map. A true honor to spend an hour with a person that I look up to professionally.

22 Feb 2021 | #187 - Alex Stoitsiadis (Dogleg) | 01:18:19
Today, we welcome Alex Stoitsiadis from Dogleg. They’re an amazing band and recently for the 7th annual Washed Up Emo Awards, which is only voted on by fans, won multiple awards and we found some time together to chat about the band and their history up to this point. If you’re not familiar with the band, they’re from Detroit, Michigan and released a record called “Melee” last year on Triple Crown. One of the best new bands out there right now, Dogleg and Alex’s words are worthy of your time.

16 Jul 2024 | #245 - David NeSmith (Bats & Mice, Regents, Sleepytime Trio, Maximillian Colby) | 01:31:04
David NeSmith has been part of some groundbreaking bands in emo. He's not afraid to say it throughout the episode, either! From Maximillian Colby's screamo days to the dissonance of Sleepytime Trio and his work with Bats & Mice. They all scream not just emo but a need to create and share new sounds still to this day. Dave made a playlist you can check out on WashedUpEmo.com or below on the discography of his career. Dive in.
The new Bats & Mice record is called Ps: Seriously.

19 Jul 2021 | #197 - Michael Malarkey (Actor, Musician) | 01:21:36
Today on the podcast, we welcome actor and musician Michael Malarkey. You may know Michael from his acting roles in the Vampire Diaries to Project Blue Book. His most recent album “Graveracer” was released in early 2020. Michael is a huge fan of emo, punk, hardcore, and screamo. My favorite quote was fitting to many that have a love of something not their job and hope they can do one to help the other. He said, “I’m a musician with an acting problem.” Both are great and it was an honor to have Michael be a part of this podcast. If you’re a fan of him or not, or know too much or not enough, you’ll enjoy this episode.

08 May 2023 | #223 - Braid (25th Anniversary of "Frame & Canvas") | 02:33:02
Today on the podcast are the members of Braid talking about their 25th Anniversary and tour for Frame & Canvas. I thought it’d be funny to interview them in order asking similar questions about the album, their feelings on resisting this record, the remixing of the album from J Robbins, and touring. What’s amazing is everyone gave different answers and memories. Plus, the secret gem of the episode is worth listening through the whole thing I promise you. I had each person describe the other band members in one word. The answers they give are insightful, sweet, and hilarious. First up is Todd Bell, then Bob Nanna, Chris Broach, then finishing up with Damon Atkinson. What’s amazing listening back to these interviews is how different everyone is but how they need a vote of 4 to decide anything as Braid. They’re back, ready to rock again. Lastly, please stay for Damon’s stories which had me laughing and a great set closer to the episodes. We hadn’t spoken before for the pod, so we had a little extra time to chat. This was an absolute blast to do and put together. Thanks to Polyvinyl, Tito and the dudes for being game to have some fun.

23 Jan 2023 | #210 - Chris Sheppard (Everyone Asked About You) | 02:15:24
Today on the podcast we welcome Chris Sheppard from Everyone Asked About You. If you’re not aware, this band was a late 90s gem of a band that I missed myself during this time. After finding out about them through some friends at Numero Group and talking to Chris, they intersected and overlapped with many of the bands of the time in their home of Little Rock Arkansas.
Chris and I talk a lot about where he’s from, seeing early emo bands, being in a band with a woman around that time, connecting with Ken Shipley from Tree Records who now runs Numero Group and the subsequent reunion shows and music being available again for the world. Plus we preview the upcoming Numero 20 showcase they’re playing in LA next month. Finally, we talk to Chris about his career now that I guarantee you will not want to miss.
I have to say, talking to bands I never knew then but connect with instantly continues to affirm my belief in this special time as a genre and as a music scene. This band I would have been obsessed with back in the day. Girl and guy vocals, super dissonant and great peaks and valleys. Heaven.

29 Sep 2021 | #200 - Adam Lazzara (Taking Back Sunday) | 01:16:34
Today we welcome a very special guest and friend, Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday. It’s fitting he’s number 200. I met him early on in my days at college when I’d see him at shows all the time. He was in high school at the time and it was something where no matter the show, Adam was there. During the podcast, we catch up on live and I bring up one of the worst shows he’s ever played at a band that coincidentally led to him moving up to Long Island. As someone who was a fan of him before the band, it was this magical thing. Someone from around here in North Carolina is going to live in NYC? Wow! As the years past and releases, we’d spare a minute or a quick hello as life runs by. It’s fitting for 200 because we’re coming up on 10 years of the podcast and 14 years of washed up emo. You tend to look back and remember who was there next to you at the beginning. Adam was that person. It feels good to know Adam is a part of this series and like emo, no matter if you showed up today or 20 years ago, it’s all here waiting for you.

Today, we welcome Mario Rubalcaba from Clikatat Ikatowi! Mario has been in many bands from Earthless, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, and Off!. As with the podcast, we spoke a lot about his time skating, the formation of Clikatat Ikatowi and the surrounding scene of San Diego that shaped him. A lot of great stories from Mario about his time in music. An absolute legendary drummer and so happy he took some time to chat about his time in music with me.

30 Nov 2020 | #180 - Mike Reed (Small Brown Bike) | 00:53:45
Like two friends who haven’t spoken in a bit. Mike and I start talking about a show i saw of theirs at the beginning of the pod. Mike was absolutely a joy to speak with albeit with some audio issues thanks to cell phones and not being able to do this in person. Also you may hear some beeps, not sure if the NSA was listening but if they are, I hope they enjoyed the trip down memory lane with Mike about the band, his life and what music has meant to him. I also seem to have had a crazy cold but still did this interview so I sound a little stuffed up. Also, it’s worth noting, please check out Travis Dopp’s GoFundMe for his fight against cancer. 31 Jan 2023 | #211 - John Dugan (Chisel) | 01:52:18
Today on the podcast we welcome John Dugan from Chisel, which we talk extensively about and they’re about to do some reunion shows for Numero Group and reissues for some classic 90s that crossed over into many genres. One that I didn’t realize happened that I do a podcast about was emo. This band is really close to my heart too. I found this band through John’s younger brother Mike. I met Mike my freshman year on campus after someone on our hall said someone down the hall likes weird music too. The first record Mike played for me was Chisel. We became fast friends and ended up seeing Chisel in 1997 with Karate at a house show in Chapel Hill. Little did we know the band would dissolve soon after that show and that would be the end of it. Years later, I’ve spoken to John through his various musical endeavors or at family functions when I’d see the Dugans in Northern Virginia. Full circle moment and happy to have John on to talk about Chisel and his many musical band over the years. We touch on his experience with Revolution Summer, Amanda MacKaye recommending he buy an album that went on to change history, his time at the City Paper and the opportunities that Brough about and the post-Nirvana boom of labels trying to sign Chisel. We even talk Fall Out Boy and the renewed interest in Chisel.

31 Dec 2020 | #182 - Steven's Untitled Rock Show (Steven Smith, Jonah Bayer) | 01:12:44
Today’s guests Steven Smith and Jonah Bayer you may know if you owned a television and loved music in the mid 2000s. Around that time, there was one TV show dedicated to the scene so to speak and championed many bands you know and love today. The show was Steven’s Untitled Rock Show on Fuse TV. A show I had the pleasure of working with during my day job at Equal Vision Records. To have their videos played and even interviewed was a huge deal at the time. Host Steven Smith and one of the writers for the show, Jonah Bayer are amazing in their candor about the time and place of the rock show and what is keeping that spirit alive today. A true time in a bottle experience for those that were there and worth taking a dive into again.

Today on the podcast, we welcome John O'Callaghan from The Maine. The Maine have had a long history in the scene and are about to jump on the Sad Summer Tour. John and I spoke about emo extensively and how the band and the music have stayed alive after all these years. I love how little it took to edit. I had a blast talking to John about all things music and emo.

06 Aug 2020 | #174 - Jon Marburger (I Hate Myself) | 01:22:51
Today we welcome Jon Marburger from I Hate Myself. I Hate Myself were a three piece emo band from Gainesville, Florida and were around for only a short time from 1997-1998 and then reunited in 2003 and 2005. Not the longest career but to me, a cornerstone and trailblazer for the music we all love that followed. If you have any interest in the history of this genre and I Hate Myself hasn’t come into your life yet, I ask you to stick around and hear Jon’s words. We talk about his thoughts on his history in the scene, I Hate Myself, emo, the music Jon created after I Hate Myself, and we nerd out about Coheed and Cambria.

10 May 2021 | #193 - Brian Fallon | 01:07:14
Today we welcome singer/songwriter Brian Fallon. You may also know him from The Gaslight Anthem or The Horrible Crowes and many other bands. Brian and I caught up to chat about finding music, his love of emo and influences that many may not realize. From The Gloria Record, Planes Mistaken for Stars, Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate, I Hate Myself… these all shaped his writing from his time in a band and solo career. It was an absolute pleasure to chat with Brian about his life in music so far and there’s plenty more ahead that will always include some influences from our scene both old and new.

22 Oct 2023 | From the Archives - Matt Pryor Interview (October 11th, 2013) | 01:26:59
With the launch of Matt's first memoir, "Red Letter Days," I listened to the first time Matt and I spoke for the podcast. It was great that I thought it was worth having those who may have missed. Plus, this was a big launching point for the show as I was starting to get bigger and bigger guests. Crazy to think that was 10 years ago this month.
Please pre-order Matt's book "Red Letter Days" at WashedUpBooks.com

Notes from episode 20 I wrote in 2013...
"It was an absolute honor to have Mr. Matt Pryor from The Get Up Kids be a part of the podcast. I just noticed after listening back to this episode that the only person left to interview from my opening musical montage is Jeremy Enigk. What a trip it's been. Matt was great to chat with and even had to scold his kids who you can hear at times during the interview. We dove into the first time Matt sang live in front of someone, Kansas City, Boy's Life, ripping off "Static Prevails" and why bands do 10 year anniversaries. Matt also mentioned his opinion on the word "emo" and throughout the podcast you can hear his voice ring with truth that also transcends to the bands he was in and his way of life. And you have to hear what song The Get Up Kids never have to practice that you love. Finally, download his recently launched podcast "Nothing To Write Home About" which is a great listen and unique insight into the scene."

10 Apr 2023 | #220 - Melody Caudill (Career Woman) | 01:11:04
Today on the podcast we welcome Melody Caudill. She’s the name behind Career Woman, that’s currently partnering with the fabulous Lauren Records. You may recognize the last name. Melody is the daughter of Jeff Caudill from Gameface and a new band called Low Coast.
All that to say, Melody recently released a song called “Patience (I Like You)” that blew me away. Jeff had been sending me her music since she began writing and I was always intrigued with how a rock star’s daughter could go down the same path when most often times they rebel and do something opposite.
I threw out the idea to chat with them together. Melody and I kicked Jeff out after about 20 minutes or so and got talk directly about her musical journey, writing process, her wants and dreams. For those listening, Melody is a freshman in college and way the hell ahead of how I was at her age and it was an absolute joy to hear her perspective on things in life and music. She even played Gilman Street in SF recently. Can’t get any cooler than that.
To learn more about Melody’s music search out Career Woman on all the socials or through Lauren Records.

So great to have Chris Simpson back on the podcast. Since we last spoke all the back for episode 15 of this podcast, Mineral wasn’t even reunited yet. We had a lot to catch up on. We talked about the Mineral 25th anniversary and how it was different from the reunion in 2014, the two new songs they wrote for the 25th anniversary book, and The Gloria Record’s reissue of A Lull in Traffic. I also continue to grill Chris about the unheard Gloria Record album I want him to finish and discuss the amazing new Mountain Time album at length which is out now on Spartan Records. At the end, if you stick around, Chris tells an amazing Antioch Arrow story. Lastly, the next volume of the Anthology of Emo book series was announced. Learn more at AnthologyofEmo.com

27 Jul 2020 | #173 - Alex Dunham (Hoover) | 01:18:07
Alex Dunham, singer and guitarist for the band and I connected in NYC right before the pandemic took hold in early March. It's crazy to hear our conversation have zero of the weight of conversations happening with our friends and family today. A time capsule for what was before this insanity we’re all in now. It’s also the last time I did an interview in my apartment in NYC. I insanely miss doing interviews in person because there’s time to gauge an answer, a pause, the eye contact, and the laughs. I’m happy someone captured the moment of us at my shitty Ikea kitchen table.
If there’s one thing to do during this podcast, its take a minute. I let Alex contemplate and take a breath a lot of the podcast. There’s so much to get to from Alex’s beginnings in Arizona, learning about punk, getting the fuck out of Arizona and heading to Washington DC, getting signed to Dischord, and a story about Fugazi staying at his grandmother’s house. We also talk about what he’s doing now with his custom furniture company Brokenpress Design. Hoover should be mentioned daily when talking about post hardcore and the early 90s. Absolute icons and I couldn’t be happier to have Alex on to tell his story.

Today on the podcast we welcome Rich Balling from The Sound of Animals Fighting, Hospital Gown, Pyramids, and RX Bandits. Rich and I reconnected recently as we last crossed paths during my days at Equal Vision during The Sound of Animals Fighting release “Lover, the Lord Has Left Us…” back in 2006. Now The Sound of Animals Fighting has a new EP called “APESHIT” out on Born Losers Records. Rich and I discuss his career balancing music, collaboration and his day job. Old shows he saw growing up in LA, plus his amazing knack as a teacher in real life to provide some real knowledge about listening to your heart, your mind, and realities we face as creative people. And yes, we talk emo. It’s a podcast about emo.

24 Jan 2022 | #203 - Cam DiNunzio (Lazycain, Denali) | 01:40:00
Today we welcome Cam DiNunzio from Lazycain and Denali. Today, he makes his wares as a composer and music supervisor. We spoke about his early days in Virginia Beach, moving to Richmond, and his thoughts on music as he navigated and survived the emo label. Cam’s contribution to music, this genre, and further throughout the musical landscape is a reason for you to stick around if you haven’t heard of the bands or his name. If you have, you’re in for a treat. We dive into the Lazycain and Denali days. At the start as context, I mention Cam’s bandmate John, who we worked together when I first moved to NYC back in 2000. With that said, as comforting as when a 718 area code calls a 917, listening back this felt more like a conversation, not an interview. I hope you enjoy.

I last spoke to Orenda for episode 181 with her bandmate Maria Taylor for the band Azure Ray. Today, we’re discussing her new book, “The Witch’s Daughter.” I finished this book in about four days and couldn’t put it down. It’s an amazing book about trauma. There will be something that resonates with you, a family member, or a friend at some point while reading this book. If you aren't convinced, you will want to read this book after listening to the conversation.

Today we have a special episode with Zach Lind from Jimmy Eat World. He and I spoke recently talking about each song off of their 2004 release "Futures" for WUER, Washed Up Emo Radio that’s on Spotify right now. During the track by track we got into more about the band’s relationship with the fans now during this epidemic and what it’s been like re-learning and playing songs from past albums. I realized I had a ton from the cutting room floor that was worth for ya'll to hear in full. So this episode was quite fun to put together and hope you dig it.

Today on the podcast we welcome Ben Green from Fairweather and Ivakota Recording Studios. Ben and I speak about his time growing up, being exposed to music, forming Fairweather, struggles in the mid 00s, and was really candid about not just the successes but the mistakes the band made. Fairweather has new music that you should check out and enjoy the many stories about Equal Vision Records and someone named Dan, who is the GM over there and a dear friend of Ben and I. Also we get into Ben’s 2nd life at his studio as a producer/engineer running Ivakota Recording Studio. A really fun way to end speaking about how he learned things from his band and helping today’s bands try not make the same ones. Lastly, we nerd out a bit on metal throughout the episode including a story at the end you won’t want to miss. His story of how he got there slides into hardcore and emo with his roots in Kansas City, deciding to try something and started learning the road from the other side. 07 Sep 2020 | #176 - Gared O'Donnell (Planes Mistaken for Stars) | 01:17:31
Today on the podcast is Gared O’Donnell from Planes Mistaken for Stars. Gared and I recently connected after he heard an earlier podcast, episode 110 to be exact, with writer Jason Heller about the impact of Planes Mistaken for Stars and the untimely death of band member Matt Bellinger. Gared hadn’t heard this episode until recently and reached out to me after he listened. We ended up talking a bit and he agreed to come on the podcast.
This episode now takes on a little extra weight. The interview, done in May of this year was before Gared was diagnosed in late August with stage 3 Esophagus cancer. As a favor, it’d be great while you’re listening to Gared’s interview to check out the link to his GoFundMe on Washed Up Emo. They’re still researching the best options for care but any words of support or some donation will go a long way for a legend.
If you don’t know much about Planes Mistaken for Stars or a super fan, this episode is for you. Gared pulls no punches talking the band’s association with emo saying, “I think we wanted to lean into the dark side of things because it made more sense to us.” On their rowdy days, he admits. “It was a circus act, it wasn’t a magic show.” He talks fondly on his time with bandmate Matt saying, “Matt walks on stage with me, every time I do.” Lastly, he’s one of the most aware of his faults and dreams I’ve ever interviewed saying, “Sometimes life is just crushing, just to walk outside the door… if one our tunes can get you to roll up your sleeves and brave through it, then that’s all I want. Then stating eloquently “I’m hoping that on my deathbed, I’ll just remember that, I did it my way.”

I had Ben from the band on allll the way for episode 77 so it was time for another episode and why not time it around the new album. Today on the podcast we welcome Daniel Littleton from The Hated. Daniel has a whole other band called Ida and that’s a whole separate episode. Today, we just stick to The Hated, which has had their catalog meticulously handled by our friends at Numero Group and recently played some reunion shows. The Hated were an early emo band. Daniel goes to great lengths to explain his fascination and frustration with the word but in the end he weaves a tale that talks about his upbringing in a biracial family that shaped his life and also seeing bands like Bad Brains or women in music helped guide where he is today. A true legend and I invite you to sit back and listen, which I do for most of this, on a time and place before the word was even uttered. This one is an absolute trip to listen back to and I hope you enjoy.

19 Oct 2021 | #202 - Josh English (Six Going On Seven) | 01:43:54
Today we welcome Josh English from the band Six going On Seven. Josh was raised in Portland Oregon, seasoned in Boston and an influence on many bands you love today. He should be on the tip of your tongue in this scene. Maybe after this interview the band and Josh will be. Their influence personally has stayed with me for years from their days on Some Records in the late 90s to "American’t (or Won’t)" on Big Wheel Recreation released back in 2001. The band shortly broke up and their CDs and 7”s I had have been staring back at me since. I honestly always had Josh on a list to interview and as this podcast creeps past its 200th episode and 10th year, it was an honor to speak to Josh about his life and what’s he got up next in his career.

17 May 2021 | #194 - Johnathon Ford (Unwed Sailor, Roadside Monument) | 01:42:04
Today, we welcome Johnathon Ford from Unwed Sailor and Roadside Monument. Johnathon and I have been trying to make this happen for years as we’d connect via mutual friends or at a show. Most recently in Brooklyn back before the pandemic we ended up talking for a long time after an Unwed Sailor show and it went places where you don’t expect a conversation to go and all the sudden you get a text or the bartender goes, “yea it’s closing time.” I wanted to do that again so I got Johnathon to come back on to talk about his music career from his early bands to Roadside Monument and his latest album “Truth or Consequences” that is out now on Spartan Records. As with any guests that got to take in the 80s, I was smitten with his stories of Seattle, Tulsa, and what laid the groundwork for his musical taste, ideals, but also where he is today. If you’ve never heard of either band, they are bedrocks for this scene and worth your time to dive into. If you have and looking to hear Johnathon speak at length about his life, you’re going to love this too.

29 Jul 2024 | #247 - Maureen Barry (Director, Producer) | 02:01:16
Vagrant Records was on fire in the 2000s. That fire was fueled by their music videos, which, at the time, was how you got to the kids. Maureen Barry was a true pioneer in making amazing videos in this scene, and with some timing, millions saw them. This is how she started; the stories are attached to some of your favorite band's music videos and careers.

We talk about the 90s, running Simple Machines, their new box set out on Numero Group, what DIY means to them, and how it impacts their lives and current work.
I learned a lot from this episode. It was so fun to sit back and be reminded how much more I need to know and listen.

26 Oct 2020 | #178 - Tonie Joy (Moss Icon) | 01:33:05
Today we welcome Tonie Joy from Moss Icon. Moss Icon were around for only four years but impacted two genres and countless bands after their short time together. They are an icon in this scene and it was absolutely fascinating to hear Tonie’s perspective on DIY and the music scene from his vantage point of being in this band from 1987-1991. We talk about how he met Jonathan Vance, finding punk and hardcore in the suburbs of DC, and the first time he heard the word emo. We also go deep into his relationship with the word and what he thinks now. Tonie was honest and someone I wish I could listen to for hours. Lucky for us, we got an hour and a half of a legend speaking about a time and place where many of the bands we love today bore some lineage to the bands Tonie was in. If you have no idea who these guys are, take a listen online. If you do know, you’re going to hear some stories told only on this podcast.

25 Mar 2019 | #149 - David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) | 01:14:25
David Bazan has always been on my list to be on the podcast, it just took almost 8 years. I always sorta thought he’d want nothing to do with me or the podcast. As with this stuff, I got over it and just asked. It worked and fittingly, David has also resurrected Pedro the Lion, with the first album under that name in 15 years. The album “Phoenix” out on Polyvinyl Records, is an amazing return. David and I speak about his religious upbringing, lots of Fugazi and we talk a lot about what music does to us when we close our eyes. Specifically that journey that music takes us on and what story you end up telling in the end. I think you’ll enjoy and I was nervous for a lot of this. I don’t know why, just meant a lot I guess.

01 Apr 2019 | #150 - Mike and Nate Kinsella (American Football) | 01:10:20
Wow, we made it to 150 episodes. Crazy to think about all the folks that have come on to share their story with you and I. To that, a big part of this is agreeing to be open and talk about their music. American Football gets the gold star.
Before the reunions, in January 2014, Mike was on the podcast for the first time chatting about his career.
For LP2, I had everyone in American Football individually to discuss reuniting and what it was like to write together again.
So for LP3 I wanted to do something different…
This time, I got Mike and Nate together in a room in NYC to discuss every single song in detail on LP3. We go from beginning to end on the writing process, the disagreements, sequencing, and why they made certain decisions for every song.
Mike also recommends some bands I’ve never heard before and Nate reads an email he sent to the band passionately discussing why he feels his track listing order is the way it should go.

22 Apr 2019 | #151 - Adam Pfahler (Jawbreaker) | 01:18:13
A documentary was released a few years ago called "Don’t Break Down," about Jawbreaker. Fun fact: Dan Didier, drummer for the Promise Ring, Maritime and Vermont was the producer of the film!
After seeing a screening of the film, I was fascinated at how much footage they had of Jawbreaker. I found out later from Dan that Adam was the one that has been saving everything. When I approached Adam to do the podcast a couple of years ago, Adam said we would need to wait as they were just about to announce all of the reunion shows.
Recently in Brooklyn, Adam and I finally sat down to talk. We discuss where these archival/documentation thoughts started in his life and how the video store that he owned for years was feeding that same itch.
We also discuss what it’s like being in Jawbreaker now and not being as neurotic about taking photos or saving the flyers. In the same light, Adam is fully realizing how important these things are later and the love for his band is how everyone should think about their own band’s legacy, big or small.
Bonus, we talk about emo and how Adam didn’t hear them being called emo until after they broke up. Finally, a couple of rad Nirvana stories about Adam seeing them for the first time and knowing the first single was going to be “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

06 May 2019 | #152 - John Vanderslice (Tiny Telephone Recording) | 01:30:48
Today we welcome John Vanderslice. I found out about John through his album in 2000 called, Mass Suicide Occult Figurines, on Barsuk Records. It stuck with me and I’ve followed him since. Last month, he released his latest album “The Cedars” on Native Cat Recordings. He’s on tour with Pedro the Lion and worth a listen if you’ve never dived into the mind of Vanderslice.
We talk about how he started late in music, how creating music takes some narcissism to survive, about the loss of life, and the depression that he’s been dealing with, including how this album saved his life. Plus, we dive into a discussion about having fame and critical acclaim early on in your career and what that does to you during and after. This is probably one of the more emotional as John opened up about his struggles with dependency on drugs and the battle he has every day with life, creating art, and keeping his recording studios, Tiny Telephone, afloat. Many of your favorite albums have been recorded there like ones from Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater-Kinney, Deerhoof, The Mountain Goats, The Magnetic Fields, and Spoon.
A man not afraid to say what he feels and talk it out, I think you’ll enjoy this discussion.

20 May 2019 | #153 - Mitch Wilson (No Knife) | 01:25:14
Today we welcome Mitch Wilson from No Knife! Mitch and I have spoken to each other over the years and finally got some time to chat. We got deep into the San Diego scene, meeting Rocket from the Crypt and Drive like Jehu and early days of being on a label associated with a major. How No Knife met The Get Up Kids, their deep relationship with Lazycain and Jimmy Eat World. We find out that we both utilize a set of jokes that we use relentlessly to our friends and family. Finally, chat about his life as a dad and you’ll hear his son a couple of times in the podcast.

10 Jun 2019 | #154 - Ian MacKaye | 01:14:22
A few months ago, I asked a couple of prior podcast guests Brian Lowit from Lovitt Records and now Dischord Records and John Davis from Q and Not U, if they thought an in-person interview could happen. Through their help and a little timing of a personal wedding in DC set this plan in motion.
As this podcast gets into its 8th year with no signs of slowing down, I thought it was time to have the person partly responsible for why I first got into straightedge, punk, hardcore, and the DIY ethos I continue to carry through during my day job in the music industry at large.
Ian couldn’t have been more gracious and after some back and forth and a nice Delta airlines agent, I was there with enough time to do the interview and make the wedding later that day.
I never expected to have the opportunity to talk to one of my heroes in this setting and for Ian to spent a couple of hours showing me around the Dischord house, the archives and then an interview will be remembered forever.

24 Jun 2019 | #155 - Chris Crisci (The Appleseed Cast) | 00:59:15
Today, we welcome Chris Crisci from The Appleseed Cast. Chris has been on my list for the entire 8 years of this podcast’s existence. I am honored to finally have him on the podcast. I loved Chris’ appreciation for the scene, constantly challenging himself, and not resting while making the band work alongside his day job, family and life. The band’s discography is one of my favorites in all of my music and to finally hear some of the questions I’ve had over the years was a true treat. Last, to note, there is a new album by the band entitled “The Fleeting Light of Impermanence” out of Graveface Records that we discuss. You can start listening to this on Friday, or if you’re listening to this in the future, it’s on your favorite streaming service. Chris was honest, sweet, and thoughtful throughout this beautiful conversation and I hope you enjoy.

22 Jul 2019 | #156 - Jade Lilitri (Oso Oso) | 01:21:41
Jade and I connected early on during the first album, "Real Stories Of True People Who Looked Kind Of Like Monsters." I was a huge fan and supporter. Following that debut, it was great to see the mainstream press take a liking to him after the amazing follow-up, "The Yunahon Mixtape." Now the album coming out August 16th, "Basking in the Glow," should propel him to another level. It’s that good. On the podcast, Jade and I discuss his early music life getting heckled, the new album, and there’s a good portion about the NBA, which we’re both huge fans of.

13 Aug 2019 | #157 - Jamie Stillman (EarthQuaker Devices, Harriet the Spy) | 01:05:37
Today we welcome Jamie Stillman from EarthQuaker Devices, an effects pedal company out of Akron, Ohio. Jamie was also in bands you may have heard of like The Party of Helicopters, Fringe Candidate, Relaxer (his current band,) and my favorite, Harriet the Spy. Harriet the Spy was a band out of Kent, Ohio that was around from 1993-1998 and was an actual screamo band. They were one of the first screamo bands I ever heard when I started getting into all of this stuff. Also from 1993 to 2002, Jamie ran Donut Friends Records and put out a ton of punk, metal, and shoegaze acts. What’s even more fascinating than his band/label stories, or his time as a tour manager that you’ll hear about, is how Jamie started an effects pedal company. It’s a testament to pursuing what you love leads to your work.

28 Sep 2019 | #159 - Dan Didier (20th Anniversary of "Very Emergency") | 01:05:37
We welcome back Dan Didier from The Promise Ring to talk about the album “Very Emergency.” Why do you ask? Because today, September 28th, 2019 is the 20th anniversary of this album’s release on Jade Tree Records!
To that, I wanted to find a fun way to celebrate and talk about the album. So Dan and I connected earlier this week to discuss many things including the inspiration of the album artwork, the backlash at the time, the one video they did for the album, Kim Colleta’s honest opinion of the album and also her prowess for taping NBA games on VHS, and finally we read some reviews on the album from AV Club, MTV, and Pitchfork.
If you haven’t, you should listen to this album now, get a feel for it and take an hour as Dan and I discuss, laugh, and then laugh some more about this album, time, and how many times we had to go to the internet to remember something.

01 Oct 2019 | #160 - Casey James Prestwood (Hot Rod Circuit, The Burning Angels) | 01:30:12
Today we welcome Casey James Prestwood from Hot Rod Circuit. Casey and I talk through the history of Hot Rod Circuit and his current endeavors with country music and his band The Burning Angels. Casey recently released a 7” out with fellow friend Josh Berwanger on Lost Broadcast Records that’s worth checking out. If you ever wanted to know the ins and outs of what went down in the early 2000s, Hot Rod Circuit was right there. Casey weaves such a beautiful story through the eras, labels, and both hits and misses. I mostly sit back in this episode and let the master storyteller weave his tale.

Today we welcome Tracy Wilson from Dahlia Seed. You may also know her from her other bands Souvenir, Ringfinger or Positive No. If it is a no, let me explain. Tracy is an icon in the emo scene because she made her own path and her own rules on how to make it in the scene. Tracy and I talk about her many bands, jobs and stories over the years that intertwine the icons of the scene and little known ones that deserve a second look. A free flowing interview done in my apartment in NYC that was really enjoyable to listen to back to. We need more Tracy Wilsons in the world.

18 Nov 2019 | #162 - Scott Hobart (Giants Chair) | 01:06:29
Today we welcome singer, guitarist and lyricist, Scott Hobart from Giants Chair. Giants Chair are a midwest band that in the early 90s influenced many in the scene we know today. Starting out on the legendary Caulfield Records, Giants Chair have been off and on over the years and continued to be talked about when this genre and era is mentioned. Now they’re about to release their new album “Prefabylon” out December 6th on Spartan Records. If this is the future, it’s out now on streaming services. I think I giggled or laughed more than most episodes as Scott and I talk about the band’s history, his kids, his day job, and “Prefabylon.”

25 Nov 2019 | #163 - Matt Pryor (20th Anniversary of "Something to Write Home About") | 01:37:37
We welcome again on the podcast for a 3rd time, Matt Pryor from The Get Up Kids. In this episode we discuss at length, the 20th anniversary of their album "Something to Write Home About."
Matt and I discuss the making of the record, we go track by track on stories and lyrics behind the songs and the release of the record on Vagrant. We also dive into the aftermath after it’s release and boom of emo that followed.
We spend time reflecting the album’s lasting impact with fans and the band that continues to this day.
When an album comes out during a time that connects, yet today, there are kids now that still reference it shows the staying power of this album. From that opening drum beat of 'Ten Minutes' to the guitar pick scrape on 'Holiday' it all floods back for you and someone out there feels the same hearing it for first today today. That’s pretty amazing. Here’s to 20 more The Get Up Kids and happy anniversary to an absolute classic, "Something to Write Home About."

Jimmy and I met up in Los Angeles to talk about his early days from the 90s in San Diego being exposed to DIY and screamo to touring with bands like The Get Up Kids, Piebald, and Jimmy Eat World. We also dive into The Album Leaf project, how he met Sigur Rós, the Sub Pop Records days, and how he’s now busy with film scoring. It all makes sense and how each one happened all started with putting yourself out there and being involved. Jimmy’s story is one of constant creativity and making connections.

Today we welcome Steve Pedersen from such bands as Cursive, The White Octave, Slowdown Virginia, and Criteria. The boys in Criteria, after 15 years, have a new album entitled “Years,” coming out on 15 Passenger Records next month and Steve was kind enough to spend some time with Washed Up to talk about it. If you’re listening to this in the future, it’s out now on streaming services. In this episode, we dive into how Steve met Tim and Matt from Cursive, what was the glue and luck behind the Omaha scene, and how that led to Saddle Creek Records starting up. We also discuss how he divides up work and play and how that was achieved while attending law school at Duke. We try and touch on every part of his career and most of all talk about the new Criteria record. Fun fact: It’s Steve’s first 3rd album as a musician. That’s reason enough to celebrate and you’ll learn why later on in the podcast.

20 Jan 2020 | #166 - William Goldsmith (Sunny Day Real Estate, The Fire Theft, Foo Fighters, Assertion) | 01:13:12
Today we welcome drummer, William Goldsmith from Sunny Day Real Estate. You may also know him from The Fire Theft, Foo Fighters or his new band called Assertion.
William and I had an amazing discussion about how he got into music, meeting Jeremy Enigk, the formation of Sunny Day Real Estate, and the lasting impact of the band. We also talk about how he met his close friend and bandmate in Assertion, Justin Tamminga, who you’ll hear speak up at times during the podcast.
William’s story is one of perseverance, admitting when you need to fix yourself and when everything is stacked against you, you keep picking yourself back up.

17 Feb 2020 | #168 - Guy Picciotto (Rites of Spring, Fugazi) | 01:16:15
Today, we welcome a legend. Guy Picciotto from Rites of Spring and Fugazi. You may also know him from Happy Go Licky or One Last Wish. Insert another obscure band to tweet at me later.
In my years of doing this podcast, I never expected to have such legends of the genre. I’m glad I waited because Guy speaks about his feelings about the word emo and how it’s changed over the years. Really eye opening and wasn’t expecting him to expound on that as much as he did. Definitely stick around for that.
Rites of Spring were only around for a couple years but still are mentioned when referring to this genre. As the word morphs and changes, Rites of Spring are the big bang of emo worth mentioning to this day.
Guy was so eloquent and thoughtful in his responses and since we did the interview at my day job, Atlantic Records. We start the podcast discussing Fugazi’s experience back in the day when they were being courted by Atlantic.
