12 Feb 2025Warbird Radio - The Indiana Jones of Warbirds: Jay Wisler Joins Matt Jolley on Warbird Radio - Ep 67600:31:52

WARBIRD RADIO - If there were ever a real-life Indiana Jones for the warbird community, it’d be Jay Wisler. Instead of dodging booby traps and uncovering lost temples, Jay has spent over four decades scouring the globe in search of something just as precious—vintage warbird parts. From the dusty corners of forgotten warehouses to the bustling hangars of world-class restoration shops, Jay’s relentless quest has helped keep historic aircraft flying for generations.

On this episode of Warbird Radio, Matt Jolley sits down with Jay Wisler to talk about his legendary career in the warbird parts industry. Since 1982, Jay’s company, Warbird Parts and Memorabilia, has been the go-to source for hard-to-find aircraft components. Before selling his massive inventory to Fagen Fighters Restorations, Jay managed nine warehouses filled to the brim with parts essential to the restoration of iconic aircraft like the North American P-51 Mustang. If you’ve ever admired an award-winning warbird at Oshkosh or any major airshow, there’s a good chance some of Jay’s parts helped bring it back to life.

His passion for Mustangs is no secret, and when asked about his favorite project, Jay doesn’t hesitate: Jack Roush’s P-51B, Old Crow. Over the years, he’s supplied parts for countless Mustang restorations, ensuring that these legendary fighters remain a fixture in the skies. His philosophy—“If I don’t have it, I’ll help you find it”—has made him a beloved figure in the warbird community, and in 2014, he was rightfully inducted into the EAA Warbirds Hall of Fame.

But Jay isn’t just looking back—he’s looking ahead. He believes the future of warbird restoration is in good hands with people like Erik Hokuf, founder of AirCorps Aviation. Erik also joins Matt on this episode to discuss the future of warbird restorations, parts manufacturing, and how his team is carrying the torch forward. Based in Bemidji, Minnesota, AirCorps Aviation has become an industry leader, blending precision craftsmanship with modern technology to keep vintage aircraft flying. From FAA Part 21 PMA-certified parts to full-scale restorations, Erik and his team are shaping the next chapter in warbird history.

Don’t miss this fascinating conversation as Matt Jolley dives into the stories behind the parts, the people, and the passion that fuels the warbird restoration world. Be sure to follow Warbird Radio on Facebook and Instagram, and sign up for our email newsletter so you never miss an episode. Tune in, take flight, and keep ‘em flying!

WARBIRD RADIO - The late "Major General Frederick "Boots" Blesse was one of the greatest aces of the Korean War era", according to Museum of the United States Air Force. He was a graduate of the United States Military Academy in 1945 (West Point), and flew two combat tours during the Korean War, racking up 67 missions in F-51's, 35 missions in the F-80, and 121 in the North American F-86 according to USAF records.

During his second tour in F-86s, he was officially credited with shooting down nine MiG-15s and one La-9. When he came from Korea, in 1952, he was America's top jet ace, according to the USAF.

During the Vietnam War, he served two tours in Southeast Asia; while on his first tour in 1967-1968, he flew 156 combat missions."

Major General Blesse retired from the USAF in 1975 as a major general, racking up over 6,500 flying hours in fighter aircraft, and over 650 hours of combat time.

He sat down with Warbird Radio's Matt Jolley, during the WWII weekend in Reading, PA around 2010.

30 Jan 2024Warbird Radio Downunder - Jan & Jerry Chisum!00:28:37

WARBIRD RADIO - Warbird Radio Downunder Hosts Dave and Grant talk about Grant's visit to Hastings, near Napier in the North Island of New Zealand, during which time he caught up with Jan and Jerry Chisum at their hangar home on Bridge Pa aerodrome. Jan and Jerry own the 1920s de Havilland DH60 Gipsy Moth that Jan's father (Stan White) purchased in England and then flew down to Sydney, Australia before shipping it to New Zealand.

Fascinating as that story is, for this episode, Jan talks about their Gardan Minicab aircraft, some of the history of Bridge Pa aerodrome, and the other aircraft they've had in their hangar. And Jerry talks about his experiences flying the P-51 Mustang and B-25 Mitchell before discussing his Bucker Jungmann and the long project he's got to restore it back to flight. It's a great chat, and we thank Jan and Jerry for inviting Grant into their home which is full of aviation memorabilia.

NOTE: You can hear more of Jan and Jerry's story, including the history of the Gipsy Moth and Jan's father's story, and bush flying in Boeing 737s, in episode S02E014 on the Plane Crazy Down Under show at:

25 Feb 2025Warbird Radio - Young Guns of Warbirds: Job Savage and Friends Bring Fresh Energy to Vintage Aviation - Ep 67700:32:09

Young Guns of Warbirds: Job Savage and Friends Bring Fresh Energy to Vintage Aviation

WARBIRD RADIO - If you’ve spent any time around the warbird community, you know it’s built on passion—passion for history, for flight, and for keeping these incredible machines in the air. But keeping that passion alive for the next generation? That’s a challenge. Fortunately, a new wave of young aviators and restorers are stepping up, bringing fresh energy to the movement, and leading the charge is none other than Job Savage.

On this episode of Warbird Radio, we sit down with Job and his flying buddy Luke Hedin, two young pilots who are making waves in the vintage military aircraft world. Their enthusiasm is undeniable, and their commitment to honoring history through hands-on flying and restoration work is nothing short of inspiring. From stick-and-rudder flying to wrench-turning in the hangar, these guys are all in.

Later in the episode, we catch up with Job’s father, serial entrepreneur and aviation publisher Tim Savage. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and Tim’s lifelong dedication to aviation has clearly influenced Job’s passion. But what’s most impressive isn’t just their personal involvement—it’s their generosity in opening doors for others. The Savage's and their friends understand that for this movement to thrive, it has to grow. That means creating opportunities for young pilots, maintenance professionals, and restoration experts to get involved, learn the ropes, and carry the torch forward.

Their love of all things warbirds is infectious, and hopefully, their generosity is contagious. Our community needs more young hands on the controls and under the cowling, and seeing what the Savage's are doing is proof that the next generation is ready to take flight.

Adding to their efforts, the Savage's are now offering DC-3 flight training and type ratings, further expanding opportunities for aspiring aviators. You can learn more at DC3Experience.org and find out more about their 501c3 museum operations by visiting Vintage Flying Machines on social media.

Take a listen to this episode, and then get involved! Whether you’re a seasoned warbird veteran or just starting to dream about flying one, there’s a place for you in this incredible community. And don’t forget to sign up for the free WarbirdRadio.com newsletter so you never miss an episode. The future of warbirds is bright—let’s make sure it stays that way!

03 Jul 2024SPECIAL FEATURE - Remembering WWII Triple Ace Bud Anderson, The Final Interview00:09:54

WARBIRD RADIO - Over the years we've had the honor of hosting many aviation legends, but few have left as lasting an impression as the late General Clarence "Bud" Anderson. Known for his incredible missions during World War II, where he became a triple ace, Anderson frequently graced our airwaves with tales of his aerial dogfights and his deep wisdom.

While his heroic exploits are well-documented in his book, "To Fly and Fight," and numerous interviews, it was his life lessons and mentoring moments that truly stood out to us. Those were the golden nuggets he shared, providing insights that went far beyond the battlefield.

As we celebrate his well-lived life, we are thrilled to share a special, previously unbroadcast conversation from our archives. This recording, made during a quiet moment at a bustling aviation convention was our last interview with General Anderson. At the time, many believed these might be some of his final days. Yet, true to form, Bud Anderson defied expectations, continuing to inspire and surprise us all.

This unedited conversation between Bud Anderson and his daughter, Kitty, offers no great war stories but is rich with the wisdom and warmth that defined him. It’s a testament to his enduring spirit and the lessons he imparted to all who knew him.

General Bud Anderson flew west on May 17th, 2024, at the age of 102. His legacy, however, lives on. You can still purchase his book, "To Fly and Fight," available in print, digital, and audio formats at toflyandfight.com.

Join us as we honor the memory of a true American hero and share in the timeless wisdom he left behind.

10 Oct 2023Warbird Radio Presents - The CAPT Bob Batterson Story00:27:50

WARBIRD RADIO - CAPT Robert "Bob" Batterson not only survived the December 7th surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, he continued to serve his country as a fighter pilot in the United States Navy. This is his incredible story and one we were blessed to record. Take a listen!

Here's the backstory:

Captain Robert E. "Bob" Batterson was a man of honor, courage, and unwavering dedication. Born in the rolling hills of West Virginia, his journey through life would take him from the coal mines of his hometown to the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, and later, into the service of the Church.

In the late summer of 1939, as war clouds gathered over Europe, a young and determined Bob enlisted in the United States Navy. His commitment to serving his country was unwavering, and he would go on to prove his mettle time and time again.

Bob's thirst for knowledge and his drive to excel were evident from the very beginning. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio State University and further honed his skills with a Master's Degree from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. These achievements were just the start of a remarkable career that spanned decades.

His first assignment took him to Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, where he underwent recruit training. But fate had grander plans for him. Soon, he found himself stationed aboard the USS Philadelphia, CL-41, as part of the Pacific Fleet. It was here, in the vast blue waters of the Pacific, that Bob would come to understand the profound significance of his service.

Eight months before the infamous December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor, Bob was transferred to Naval Station Pearl Harbor. He would witness the horrors of that day and the United States' entry into World War II. But rather than deter him, the attack steeled his resolve to do all he could to protect his country.

When the opportunity arose for enlisted personnel to apply for flight training, Bob seized it. His determination soared as high as the aircraft he would come to master. In September 1944, he earned his wings as a Naval Aviator, becoming a guardian of the skies.

After completing fighter training in the formidable F6F Hellcat at Daytona Beach, Bob was assigned to Fighter Squadron ONE aboard the USS Bennington, CV-20. He served with distinction until the end of the war, earning respect and accolades from his fellow servicemen.

Bob's commitment to service didn't end with the war's conclusion. He transitioned to the Supply Corps and continued to serve his country in various capacities until his well-deserved retirement in 1974. His military career was marked by unwavering dedication, integrity, and a deep love for his nation.

In retirement, Bob found another calling, one of spiritual significance. He dedicated a decade of his life to serving the Diocese of Corpus Christi as the Fiscal Officer under Bishops Drury and Gracida. His tireless work earned him the Papal Medal Pro-Ecclesia Et Pontifice in 1984, a testament to his devoted service to the Church.

But Bob's heart was not just in the church; it was also on the sea. For over three decades, he volunteered on the USS Lexington Museum, where he was one of the original volunteers. His passion for naval history and his love for the museum's mission were evident in his commitment to preserving the legacy of those who served.

On Friday, August 11th, 2023, Captain Robert E. "Bob" Batterson passed away, leaving behind a legacy of service, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion. His memory lives on in the hearts of those he served, both in the Navy and in the Church. Bob's journey from the coal mines of West Virginia to the skies of World War II and the halls of the Church is a testament to the extraordinary impact one person can have when they dedicate their life to the service of others. He will forever be remembered as a true American hero and a man of deep faith.

26 Sep 2023Warbird Radio Downunder - The RAF's Peter Isaacson00:35:46

WARBIRD RADIO - In this episode, a recording of a presentation Peter made to an audience in 2014, he takes the listener on a bomber mission, describing all that was involved for the average bomber crew member on an average operational sortie. He also talks about the poor treatment by the British Government and the media of Bomber Command's leader, Sir Arthur Harris, and gives a perspective of 'Bomber' Harris as viewed from one of the men who flew in Bomber Command.

He delves into the baffling controversies that have been generated in recent decades about Harris and the bombing of Dresden, and other topics. And he presents some statistics that detail the losses, and other casualties, in RAF Bomber Command. A sobering topic indeed.

Founded in 2017, Strix Aero initially focused on engineering consulting, but soon evolved into a leader in the overhaul and restoration of airworthy Allison 1710 engines. Working with C&P Aviation in Blaine, MN, and AirCorps Aviation in Bemidji, MN, Corry and his team have spent years diving deep into the engineering history of the Allison 1710, a powerplant that played a crucial role in World War II aviation.

With a mix of modern engineering analysis and traditional restoration expertise, Strix Aero has developed new replacement parts and overhaul methods designed to improve reliability and durability. Corry’s team is dedicated to preserving and enhancing these legendary engines, ensuring they remain a vital part of the warbird community for years to come.

And that’s not all—Strix Aero is also rolling out new carburetor overhaul capabilities and an engine overhaul shop, adding even more resources for warbird operators looking to keep their aircraft in top flying condition.

Ethan & Emily Malavolti of Aviation Depot: A Passion for Pilots

24 Oct 2023Warbird Radio Downunder - Matt Henderson of Tocumwal Aviation Museum01:09:28

WARBIRD RADIO - Warbird Radio Downunder Hosts Dave and Grant speak with Matt Henderson, who with his wife Kaz moved to Tocumwal airport's airpark in New South Wales in 2017, and then in 2019 they set up the Tocumwal Aviation Museum there.

Matt has researched the fascinating history of Tocumwal, which was one of he biggest aerodromes in the world when it was built by the Australian Government for the US Forces in WWII. By the time the construction was completed the war situation had changed, and the USAAF no longer required it. It was therefore handed over to the Royal Australian Air Force who made it into a massive repair and maintenance base for the RAAF Consolidated B-24 Liberators and other aircraft, as well as a paratroop training school, and more.

As well as the museum, and the popular cafe, Matt and Kaz also run airshows at Tocumwal, their third such event having just taken place in September 2023.

And they have just taken possession of a new addition to the museum, an ex-RAAF Macchi 326, A7-083, handed over by the Air Force on the 20th of October 2023. This episode was recorded two weeks earlier but was embargoed till the handover had happened.

Warbird Radio to Feature ICAS President John Cudahy on the Popularity of Vintage Military Aircraft at Airshows

WARBIRD RADIO - On this episode Warbird Radio is set to welcome John Cudahy, President of the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS), to discuss what the latest data reveals about the popularity of vintage military aircraft at airshows across the United States. The conversation will focus on findings from the 2023 Spectator Survey conducted by ICAS, which indicates that static warbird displays have seen a 4.7% decline in spectator interest since 2018, and when you factor in the 2000-2016 average, they've fallen 7.2% overall. Warbirds in general saw a bump of 3.4% in 2018 over the 2000-2016 average but have since fallen from 44.7% to 42.5% in 2023.

Despite this dip, warbirds remain the third most popular attraction at airshows according to Cudahy, demonstrating their continued significance in the airshow industry. However, this downward trend raises important questions: What does it mean for the future of warbirds at airshows, and how can operators work to reverse it ahead of the 2025 US Spectator Survey?

Joining the discussion is Dik Daso, Executive Director of the Air Force Historical Foundation and former Curator of Modern Military at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. Daso brings an optimistic perspective and fresh ideas on how to reinvigorate public interest in warbirds. He will also serve as the featured speaker at this year’s National Warbird Operators Conference (NWOC) in Dallas, where these critical topics will be explored in greater depth.

Warbird Radio host Matt Jolley points out an ironic challenge facing warbird operators: the very thing they often find frustrating about airshows—spectators running up to touch their aircraft—could actually be a golden opportunity. Daso points out that tactile learning—even smell—is a huge part of the way children create memories. Jolley adds that the Spectator Survey supports this, with data showing RC airplanes (something accessible to young folks) have risen in popularity by over 10% since 2018. Modern military interest is up over 15% as well, reflecting the fact that things people can relate to drive popularity.

Jolley, who is not only the host of Warbird Radio but also a top U.S.-based airshow announcer, brings an industry insider’s perspective to this topic as well. He recalls how, as a kid, the smell of oil and avgas at an airshow would stick with him long after the engines cooled down, and how standing under the wing of a B-17 gave him a sense of history no book ever could. It’s moments like those that forge lasting connections, and with fewer living veterans to share firsthand experiences, it is now up to operators and enthusiasts to bridge the gap and keep these stories alive for new generations. The key, Jolley argues, is to adapt storytelling methods to modern audiences, engaging them in ways that resonate and ensure these historic aircraft remain relevant.

With the next ICAS Spectator Survey scheduled for 2025, now is the time for the warbird community to mobilize. The hard work of engaging audiences could yield tangible results in next year’s data, helping secure the place of warbirds at airshows for years to come.
