27 Jan 202134. I Need Carbs00:19:06

When your jeans are unforgiving and cutting off your circulation, do you ever think, "That's it.  I'm doing a juice cleanse for the next three months"?  I came so close recently to giving my hard earned American dollars to do a weight loss program that I only would've stuck to for 47 minutes.  Cutting out major food groups isn't the answer for us.  Listen as I offer another alternative.  And this one includes carbs.

23 Apr 2025119. We Are SO Back | Why I Took a Break, Life Updates, and What’s Next for the Podcast00:21:12

I’m baaaack! Maybe you didn’t notice I was gone, but I’ve gotten so many kind messages from you guys asking if I’ll ever bring the podcast back, so here we are! In this episode, I’m giving you the lowdown on what the last two years of my life have looked like, why I felt like I needed to put the podcast down for a while, and why I’m picking it back up now.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • I’m in an exciting (albeit a bit scary) season of rediscovery and reinvention. I needed to take some time to wallow, sit with my feelings, and heal before I could get here. If you’re in a tough season, don’t rush the processing portion, or it’ll catch up with you unexpectedly.

  • When we’re in a season of transition, it’s normal to cling to what’s familiar and comfortable. I stayed in my marital home post-divorce, and it ended up feeling lonely. Moving out and into an apartment I could make my own has been incredibly healing.

  • Do something that makes you feel alive this week. Maybe it’s a hobby you haven’t done in a while, reconnecting with a friend who brings out the best in you, or booking a trip you’ve been putting off.

Wake Up to Your Life is an award-winning podcast hosted by Colleen Odegaard. On this show, you’ll hear from experts (and learn from my own hilarious stories) on how to rediscover yourself in a new season of life, no matter what that looks like for you.

10 Mar 202140. When Things Don't Go Your Way00:26:10

You don't make the sale, you don't get the job, your boyfriend breaks up with you, you don't win the Emmy award.  The last one just happened to me.  And I was really bummed out about it.  I was thinking that my work is no good and that I should just quit all of it.  WHAT?!  When things don't go your way, what do you make that mean?  It's not that you're a loser destined for mediocrity.  Far from it.  Listen as I share where my mind went when I did't win an award that was important to me.  It illustrates why mind management is so critical to moving forward.

19 Jan 202268. You Can!00:18:09

You are competent.  You are capable.  You are strong.  You can do what needs to be done.

In this episode I share why it's critical you remind yourself constantly just how capable you are.

When my husband left me, I didn't think I could go on.  There was obviously the emotional toll.  There were also the logistics like... who's going to cut the grass?  Who will help me when my computer isn't working?

Reminding myself just how competent and capable I am got me through this.  It can help you too.

Love is all that matters.

Your relationships need to be nurtured.

Make peace with your body.  She's the only one you get.

Forgiveness is mandatory.  I know it sucks.  But you have to learn how to do it.

Life coaches ask a lot of questions.  And for good reason.  When you're asked a thought-provoking, powerful question, you come up with insightful answers.  In this episode, I share some good questions to ask yourself to help you create changes in your life.

Questions like:

What am I thinking?

What's the story I want to tell?

Who do I want to be?

What's the wise thing to do?

If you find it hard to forgive people, you're in the right place.  If holding a grudge is your jam, you need to listen.  Being unforgiving hurts YOU.  The person you aren't forgiving doesn't feel your pain.  I have been a world class grudge holder in my life.  And it was wrong.  I want you to forgive other people and yourself.  This frees you up in so many ways.  In this episode, I offer some things you can do to help you let go of anger and resentment now.

10 Mar 2023117. Conscious Communication00:30:39

We're told that happy couples have great communication.  But what exactly does that mean?

In part, it's being able to listen with the intent of understanding your partner...  even when he or she is saying something you don't agree with or like.  My default used to be defensiveness.  I bet you can relate.

In this episode I share what I have learned about conscious communication.  I hope it helps you and your person commuincate effecitvely and lovingly.

If you're single and looking for love, this episode is for you.  And coupled up folks, you might learn something too!

Jennifer Hurvitz is a dating coach and the host of the podcast Doing Relationships Right.

In this episode, Jennifer shares how to know when you're ready to date after divorce.  She also talks about why you should only date one person at a time (who the hell can hande more than that?!).  And if you''re online dating, Jen has great advice for making your profile and bio really stand out above the rest.

Listen my friend... never ever did I ever think I'd be dating again.  I thought I'd be married until the day I dropped dead.  So I'm out in the wild too and I know it's scary to give your heart to someone.  But we deserve big mad love.  Let's go find it.

10 Feb 202136. Pushing Through Fear00:21:45

You've got that thing you want to do.  Change your career, write a book, public speaking, start your side hustle.  But every time you think about it, fear shows up and ruins all the fun.  In this episode I talk about ways you can take action toward your goal even when you feel fear.  You're going to examine your thoughts, accept the fear, and remember what other people who are kicking butt do when they feel afraid.

Make sure you stick around until the very end of the show for randomness.  You'll hear how you can save 20% on Botox.  You're welcome.  And at 20:32 my son Alden makes a guest appearance.  It has nothing to do with facing fear.

What brings me energy?

What lights me up?

We should all have some version of a Happy Box.  It can be an actual box… or just metaphorical Happy Box.

When I’m upset, I forget what I need to do to help myself.  So in my “box", I have nature, fresh air, meditation, prayer and music.

20 May 20201. Welcome to Wake Up To Your Life with Colleen Odegaard00:20:27

After a three year gestation period, I’ve finally given birth to the first episode of the Wake Up to Your Life podcast.

I spent years living on auto-pilot, in the same habits and patterns.  As a result, I wasn’t living the life that I imagined for myself.

In this first episode I talk about why I was stuck and and how I began to “wake up” to another way of living.  My hope is my personal stories and experience as a life coach and TV host will help you awaken to what it is you want more of in your life.

By no means do I have it all figured out.  But I have learned some strategies that have helped me get past my anxiety and self-doubt.  And I want you to have these tools too.  Let’s wake up to our lives… together!

23 Dec 202029. Get Your Hopes Up00:19:56

If you've ever said, "I don't want to get my hopes up", listen to this episode.  I think we SHOULD have hope.  You dress rehearse disappointment so that you won't be bummed out if you don't get the job or if the person you're into doesn't call you back. But does that really work?  NO!  All you've done is prolong the time you feel disappointed.  Getting your hope up can improve your mood and change the way you show up in your life.

You've heard people say, "Everything happens for a reason."  That makes me want to throw things.

Telling someone who is hurting that this terrible thing he or she is going through is happening for a reason won't make the person feel better.

Remember playing Hot/Cold when you were a kid?  Someone would hide an object and you'd have to find it.  If you were getting closer to it, he or she would say "warm, warmer, hot!" and if you were nowhere near it, you'd hear "cold".  I want you to remember hot or cold as you go through your day.  What experiences make you say "hot" and which ones leave you freezing?  This little game can tell you a lot about yourself.

26 May 202149. Two Wolves00:23:42

This title tells you nothing about this episode.  But trust me, the Native American parable of the Two Wolves is a good one.  It reminds us that we have CHOICE over how we think.  We all have a fight between two wolves going on inside of us.  One is a wolf of evil, anger, bitterness, resentment and self pity.  The other wolf is one of love, faith, truth, joy and peace.  Which wolf are you feeding?  I have been feeding the wrong one for a while.  And it has cost me so much.  In this episode I share how the wolf of love can win.

09 Sep 202014. Getting Unstuck00:19:40

I've been hearing from a lot people who tell me they're stuck.  Stuck in a job they can't stand, stuck in a mediocre relationship, stuck in a life that doesn't excite them.  I used to say those words quite often... I'm stuck.  I would also say... I just don't know what to do.  But that's not true.  We aren't really stuck.  More likely, we are scared to take action.  In this episode, I talk about what's really going on when you feel stuck in some area of your life and what you can do to move forward.

17 Mar 202141. I'll Be... With Edwin McCain00:46:48

Singer/songwriter Edwin McCain recorded two of the most popular love songs in pop music history.... I'll Be and I Could Not Ask for More.  He'd achieved so much success in the music industry and by all outward appearances, it would've been easy to believe that he could not ask for more (see what I did there?).  But Edwin says he felt tremendous pressure at the height of his fame.  His partying got out of control and he developed an alcohol addiction.  In this episode, Edwin shares how fatherhood led him to wake up to his life and get sober.  He's way cool.  I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Sending your kids off to college is bittersweet.

On the one hand, you're so proud!  You wanted this to happen.  It's the order of things.

On the other hand, you feel sad.  You're not sure what to do with yourself.  I get it.  Both of my kids are off to stupid college.

In this episode, I offer some things to help you with this transition.  This is even relevant if you have younger kids who are going to kindergarten for the first time, middle school or high school.

08 Jun 202287. The Apartment, The Anniversary, The Graduation00:29:31

Apartment = Trigger

Anniversary = Trigger

Graduation = Trigger

I'd been feeling more "normal" for a while.  Then a series of things triggered me, reminding me of the difficulty of my divorce and my new reality.

In this episode I speak frankly about the challenges and how they've all led me to one solution... forgiveness.

It's my hope that if you're harboring a spirit of unforgiveness, you'll consider what I have to say.

28 Sep 2022100. Wake Up in the Hot Seat00:33:16

Episode 100 brings you a special guest host.  Avid listeners will recall Colonoscopy Nicole, who has since been renamed "Nicolonoscopy".  (How could I have missed that?!)

Nicolonoscopy is one of my best friends.  She's asking ME the questions for this 100th episode.

We recap some of the more popular shows I've hosted.  She makes fun of my shoes.  Nicole asks me... Brad Pitt or George Clooney?  Nicole also asks me what advice I'd give to someone going through a difficult time.  It's a mixed bag of silly and legit stuff.

I would like to thank you for listening to this little show. Without your participation, I never would have made it to 100 epsiodes.

11 Aug 202157. Give More, Gain More00:37:01

Being selfish can come very easily for many of us.  What if we decided to be more giving... to think more about what we can give rather than what we can get?  My friend Meghan Trainor is the most incredible fitness coach.  She gives everything she can to the tens of thousands of people she trains online.  Meghan told me about a book called The Go-Giver which reinforces her belief that the more you give of yourself authentically, the more you get. This conversation will get you to think about giving in a whole new way.

What is she wearing?! I knew their marriage would never last... I mean do you hear how she talks to him?  She hasn't aged well at all.

Be honest.  Do you say things like that?  When we are being judgmental, it's usually because we are feeling bad about ourselves.  Or maybe it's because we are so desensitized to it in this overly critical culture.  Listen as I talk more about why we judge, why it's a problem, and we can let go of judgment to make way for compassion.

Look on the bright side.  It'll all work out.  Everything happens for a reason.  Things could be worse.

#shutup

Toxic positivity isn't helpful.  It's actually harmful.  It makes people feel guilty for what they're feeling.

When your friends are hurting, they need empathy.  When you're suffering, you need compassion.  Not a line of BS from a person who is uncomfortable with difficult emotions.

People with swagger put themselves out there, they’re bold, they take risks.  How would having just a little more swagger change your career, your love life, your relationships?  My dance partner in this episode is business and life coach Lauren Widrick.  I'm proud to say Lauren is my coach.  She has a whole bunch of swagger.   Listen as Lauren walks us through "Swagger Camp".  In camp you learn to:

-Get your mind right
-Get your sh&*t tight
-Know you'll be all right

We also discuss what to do about swagger suckers like comparison, overthinking, toxic people, negative self-talk and judging people.

15 Jul 20206. Feel Your Feelings00:24:20
Many of us will go to great lengths to avoid feeling unpleasant emotions.  We try to stuff them down with food, alcohol, excessive shopping, staying busy, scrolling social media, etc.  But here’s the deal… you have to FEEL to HEAL.  Listen as I talk about why resisting our emotions doesn’t work for creating a life you love.  And find out how mindfulness can help you feel your feelings without getting too wrapped up in them.

03 Mar 202139. Frientimacy00:45:38

If you want deeper and more meaningful friendships, you want  "frientimacy".  Shasta Nelson is a friendship expert who coined that word.  She says to develop strong friendships, we need three things:  consistency, vulnerability and positivity.  Shasta is a TEDx speaker. She has appeared on The Today Show and The Steve Harvey Show.  She's also the author of three books on friendship.

20 Jan 202133. Owning Your Story00:30:15

Are there parts of your past that you would rather not remember?  My guest on this episode talks about the importance of owning your story.  Roshanda Pratt is an author, speaker and visibility coach.  Roshanda has learned how to accept her past but not be defined by it.  She encourages you to do the same... and to use your story to help other people.

On a personal note, Roshanda and I have been friends for 20 years.  Even if we haven't talked for a few months, I can call her and we pick up right where we left off.  She used to pray with me in the makeup room at the TV station where we worked together.
Roshanda is a delight.

I'm making a big change in my life.  I'm saying goodbye to my TV career after nearly three decades and I'm going all in with my coaching business. I'm excited and scared.  In this episode I talk about how we can embrace change instead of resisting it.  I also share some behind the scenes stories that really won't teach you anything... they're just kind of funny.

28 Apr 202147. Responding Instead of Reacting When Triggered00:34:39

If you get triggered by something, what do you do?  Do you REACT or RESPOND?  Being reactive often means we're letting our emotions run our lives.  There are ways to ground yourself and choose how to respond to any situation, no matter how difficult it might be.  In this episode I talk with marriage and family therapist Lisa Ayala about how to do this work to improve relationships and ease your suffering.

Side note:  Lisa and I have been dear friends since we were 8 years old.  We have spent thousands of hours on phone calls over the years and she has taught me so much.

19 Oct 2022103. Dealing With Rejection00:20:25

When you experience rejection or criticism, what do you do?  I've been known to get defensive, cry, take it personally, feel sick to my stomach, then eat chips and salsa.  Can you relate?

There are much better ways to deal with rejection.

-Be honest with yourself and a trusted confidant

-Believe it's not personal

-Look for the lesson

-Consider the source

Listen to this 20 minute episode as I walk you through each of these steps and share some of my own rejection stories.
