22 Nov 2019Ep. 19: The Head That Wears The Crown: Early Elizabeth II vs. Silver Jubilee Elizabeth II01:00:49

Karen and Wynter couldn’t resist diving into season 3 of Netflix’s most opulent and expensive series, The Crown as soon as it was released. How do the two feel about the new cast, lead by Oscar-winner Olivia Colman & Helena Bonham Carter as we enter EIIR’s midlife transformations? Karen has a little something to say about Gen Z labeling Gen X a bunch of “Karens.” And as usual, nuo-lingo enhances our vocabulary, as Wynter gets us bopping to a new song of the week.

09 Mar 2020Ep. 25: Sleepytime TV and Not So Super Tuesday01:00:06

Karen and Wynter fixed their audio problems just in time to record in the wake of Super Tuesday 2020. They get into the nitty-gritty generational breakdown between candidates and their supporters while assessing the media (hell)scape of electoral politics in general. Wynter tells us what Kim Kardashian has to do with all of it at the end of the segment (!!!)  In light of all this political drama, the two also tell us what TV helps them go “nighty night” after a long and stressful day of facing the world. You might be surprised--or not--at Wynter’s frightening selections, while Karen gets into how The Circle is a perfect sleepytime TV show. Also, why do both of them keep falling asleep to the reboot of High Fidelity? Warning: there are some Love is Blind spoilers. Plus, nuo-lingo and a song fit for Tuesdays.

Their main segment focuses on how uncannily films and TV from the past have predicted elements of our present (or their future), from 1973’s Soylent Green set in 2022, to Robocop, Her, Idiocracy, and many more, including detours into present day “pandemic” shows like Station Eleven and Y: The Last Man

Nuo-lingo continues as retro-lingo with an education in denim cuts, and our songs of the week anticipate next week’s episode about the future of music.

Wynter and Karen reveal the different reasons each of them cried when they watched The Real World: Homecoming, which reunites the cast of MTV’s first season of The Real World: New York (1992). Whose fashion and “smooth concave chest” do they miss most? And what are their impressions of the cast members both then and now? Plus, the two take a deep dive into THE event of the last week, Oprah’s exclusive interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Plus nuo-lingo, and songs of the week both old and new that slap.

12 Jun 2020Ep. 38: Just Can’t [The] Help It01:26:59

Wynter returns this week, as we welcome special guests Renee Bever (artist, co-host of Attack of the Queerwolf), and Tavia Nyong’o (author, Professor of American Studies at Yale). The panel catches up about how they’ve been participating in the national uprisings, while reflecting on some of the media moments, both head-scratching, and inspiring over the last week, from the Dems draped in kente cloth, to “You About to Lose This Job,” the unofficial anthem of the movement.  Wynter also digs deep into the “Bon Appetit Revolt,” a developing story at the time we recorded. The panel devotes some deep conversation to  “good civil rights movies” vs. really shitty ones, as well as films about race relations that are frozen in their historical moment. Nuo-lingo goes meta to explore when certain slang terms are appropriate or appropriation, and there are several songs of the week to get you to the next protest.

Instead of another plea to contribute to us this week, we ask that you contribute to the social justice organizations of your choice, especially those promoting peace, and racial, gender and sexual equality. We, and our guests this week  recommend the following:

28 Feb 2020Ep. 23: Cheer Up, Baby!01:02:05

In the spirit of the moment, Karen re-watches the film Waiting to Exhale for the first time since 1995, while Wynter tells us what L.A. Plays Itself has to do with the angle the two are taking for the festival. Nuo-lingo tells us about a new turn to granny aesthetics and old money cosplay, plus two classic songs of the week.

25 Oct 2019Ep.15: “Intimate Horror” & Female Anti-Heroes: Midsommar vs. Hereditary00:57:03

***SPOILER ALERT - MIDSOMMAR AND HEREDITARY PLOT DETAILS ARE DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE***

It’s Halloween-time and modern-day horror ensnares Wynter who finally convinces Karen to watch Midsommar and Hereditary. Which movie could she not make it through?!? The two get into horror/suspense auteur Ari Aster’s impressive body of work exploring intergenerational trauma, and what they call “intimate horror” within families and between lovers. Wynter goes to the theater to see Famous, a play set in 1994, based on the Two Corey's trauma they experienced as young heartthrobs and child actors from the GenX era. Karen finds refuge in the Asian and gaysian plentitude on primetime sitcoms, including Joel Kim Booster on Sunnyside and Nico Santos’ continuing undocumented arc on Superstore, plus Bowen Yang killing it every which way on SNL. NUO-LINGO drops some onomatopoeia, and the SOTW is deeply beloved by both hosts.

29 Mar 2021Ep. 64 It’s An Honor Just to Be Asian... #StopWhiteSupremacy01:27:11

Karen and Wynter confront the surge in anti-AAPI hate and violence during Covid, while exploring how its longer histories are intertwined with pop culture. Karen shouts out some writers doing the hard work of responding to the Atlanta shootings in venues like Vanity Fair and GQ, and tells Wynter what she’s been watching--both good and bad--to ease her mind.

The two impromptu launch a recurring segment on The Real World: Homecoming and get into what’s the matter with Becky. Plus, WTF is an NFT? And why do we people think British accents on Netflix make shows better? (Spoiler alert: they don’t).

05 Jul 2021Ep. 71: Soft, Yacht, and Spago Rock with Mike Pace and Molly Lambert01:23:01
We go long this week to pore over all the shout horns, crotchy synth chords and late-80s affluence of what Mike Pace famously describes as Spago rock. Molly Lambert explains the Spago-adjacent music she and her brother have dubbed “Glass Bricks rock,” and the whole panel gets into what Wolfgang Puck and Spago as fantasy and reality meant to pop culture from the 1980s onward. Wynter and Karen kick off the show by processing the homosocial episode of Dave, and explain why Apple TV’s Physical is more than a glossy journey through 1980s aerobics culture.

Nuo-lingo reminds us we’re in a pandemic, and we leave you with a song in honor of the recently departed cultural critic, Lauren Berlant.

09 Oct 2020Ep. 50: Debating SNL01:00:57
Wynter and Karen take a look back at SNL’s political coverage, especially its parodies of presidential debates past and present, as the show resumes production with a live studio audience. Is satire even possible in the political world we’re living in today? Trying with all her might not to get too caught up in the onslaught of news, from 45’s COVID cluster to the death of Eddie Van Halen, Wynter is in a transatlantic mood and tells us all about Emily in Paris. Karen can’t help but get into the Ryan Murphy Netflix series Ratched, which features Filipinos, lesbians, and a Sirkian aesthetic. Plus, nuo lingo offers a sophisticated approach to a lack of sophistication and songs of the week from the 80s that say everything about this moment.

11 Apr 2022Ep. 87: The Music of 1992 and 200200:57:29

Wynter and Karen reflect back on the music of 1992 and 2002, from Pitchfork favorites to the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to selecting their MVP songs and albums from each year, they each get into what they were wearing and gift an NFT idea to Ja Rule in the process.

Wynter continues delving into the saga of millennial overreachers by entering the world of WeCrashed, while Karen sobs to the epic, multigenerational saga that is Apple TV+’s  Pachinko, while revisiting the thrills and jiggles of the Lakers’ showtime era of the 80s reimagined in Adam McKay’s Winning Time

Plus, nuo-lingo and songs of the week from 1992 and 2012 (in an extension of our episode’s timeline).

04 Dec 2023Ep. 113: Favorite Finales01:04:43

In our penultimate episode, Wynter and Karen prepare for the end by reflecting on their favorite series finales including Mad Men, Six Feet Under, The Good Place and The Americans among others. Before they do, Karen insists on one more discussion about a pop culture controversy: Julianna Marguilles’ condescending comments told from her perspective “as someone who plays a lesbian journalist” on TV. Our team LOVES Squid Game: The Challenge, which is their new problematic fave. Plus, NUO-LINGO is unlocked for the last 2 episodes and butch/femme songs of the week.

24 May 2021Ep. 68: Girls 5 Eva, 3gether with Guy Branum01:01:33

Their former girl group sister, Guy Branum told Karen and Wynter to watch the new Peacock series Girls 5Eva so they could all process it 3gether, which they do on this week’s ep. Karen is too busy cavorting in the gay woods with her vaxxed BFFs to absorb any new pop culture, though Guy does bring up one of their favorite old topics--lesbian representation on Top Chef--to keep things sapphically interesting. Wynter gets into the new CNN docuseries about The Story of Late Night, while peering into her crystal ball about what we might expect from the genre in years to come. Nuo-lingo gets “cheugy” with it, plus some music from the late 90s to Y2K.

27 Mar 2020Ep. 28: Sheltering in Place with our 70s/80s/90s Faves00:59:50

Karen & Wynter are in week two of their quarantines in Echo Park & Encino, following “shelter in place” directives from Gov. Newsom in California. This prompted them to wonder which fictional characters from the 70s, 80s or 90s would they actually want to shelter in place with for various practical, and sometimes other reasons. They catch up on what their days have been like, to what entertainment has kept them afloat in these troubled times. Plus, a very of the moment Nuo-Lingo, and a song of the week cover that made Karen cry.

10 Apr 2020Ep. 30: Nochella: Music for the Cruelest Month01:03:55

It’s their third week of quarantine, so Karen is talking to Steak-umm on Twitter, and Wynter thinks Ellen sux. In lieu of music festival season launching this April, the two offer their own virtual W2X music festival for you this week. Sure there’s no Coachella and Stagecoach, but what really strikes at Karen’s heart is the postponement of PopCon 2020, the annual gathering of musicians, music writers, scholars, and fans at Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture, which she’d been organizing for the better part of a year. Nevertheless, she brings us a little taste of scheduled PopCon presenter Glenn McDonald of Spotify’s very international “In the Time of the Virus” playlist, with over 1700 new songs written since the start of the pandemic from all part of the globe. Meanwhile, Wynter lets us in on some of the themed playlists she’s been crafting for our sisters and fairy podmothers at the Jane Club, fit for everything from dining-in, to being “extremely chill.” Listen along with us, and turn the music up!

08 Jun 2020Ep. 37: American Uprising01:12:03

We stand with the Black Lives Matter movement in advocating for racial justice, and against police violence. Wynter and her family have also suffered a personal tragedy, so this episode is in somber observance of this, as well as our current national events. Queer scholars & activists, Homay King and Jeanne Vaccaro join Karen to offer reports and resources for social justice actions, including ways of contributing for those who cannot participate in street actions. They discuss the media coverage of protests, race, and the pandemic, while reflecting on how race, feminism and LGBTQ politics intersect, or fail to, in “pride month” media and entertainment, including the recent Hulu original series Mrs. America. Nuo-lingo focuses on the concept of “mutual aid” and what it truly means, while the panelists offer resources for what to read, what to watch, and how to educate yourselves & others about race, justice, and sexuality in America.

Instead of another plea to contribute to us this week, we ask that you contribute to the social justice organizations of your choice, especially those promoting peace, and racial, gender and sexual equality. We, and our guests this week (Homay King and Jeanne Vaccaro) recommend the following:

Wynter gets into the chart daddies of election coverage, John King & Steve Kornacki, Sarah tells us why this season’s The Bachelorette mimics the 2020 election cycle, and Karen delves into the “privilege porn” of HBO’s The Undoing. Karen & Wynter binged all of Netflix’s The Crown in a single day, as season 4 of the prestige series swerves into the GenX sweet spot of 1977-1990. The two get into the Charles & Diana of it all, and the cognitive dissonance of seeing Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher, while taking a stab at answering why two California-raised WOC like themselves are so fascinated by anemic British royals. Karen updates us on the pandemic-themed debuts of Grey’s Anatomy and This is Us, and Wynter reminds us why Leta Powell Drake is a national treasure. Plus Nuo-Lingo and tunes befitting the People’s Princess.

04 Oct 2019Ep. 12: Ryan Murphy’s Nostalgia Game - AHS vs. ACS01:01:17

With the recent debut of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: 1984, Wynter and Karen take the occasion to explore his deeply nostalgic oeuvre to consider whether or not his dominion is 80s camp or 90s magic realism, i.e. horror stories or true crime stories? The two talk about where they were when Richard Ramirez, the serial killer known as the Nightstalker and resurrected in AHS 1984, was wreaking havoc IRL. Wynter goes Inside Out with Demi Moore’s new autobiography, Karen GAGS over the recently announced thirtysomething reboot, while both take a detour into The Affair’s wild psychosexual turns as it wraps up its series run. Nuo-lingo tells you why this year’s “GAG” is not 1984’s, and we give you a song of the week that Ryan Murphy has yet to harvest from 1984’s Hot 100 for his over-the-top slasher series.

13 Mar 2020Ep. 26: “What Movie Am I In?!?” Our Brave New World of Outbreaks and De-Extinction00:50:32

Like everyone else in the world, Wynter and Karen are preparing for a possible Coronavirus quarantine. What social distancing and stockpiling techniques have they been practicing to avoid “the ‘roni?” With the world as eerie and uncanny as it is in the age of late capitalism, both are feeling a little like they’re actually living in disaster films like Contagion, Outbreak, Cloverfield, Idiocracy and even...Jurassic Park (!) Plus, a longer than usual nuo-lingo chat about “Periodt” and when slang veers in and out of cultural appropriation.

21 Jun 2021Ep. 70: Gamechangers: Film & TV Edition01:21:35

Wynter asks us all to think about the films and TV shows that changed the game, from those that captured the style and essence of their era (Clueless), to those that transformed the cultural conversation (Boyz N The Hood, and the early-80s trifecta of Victor/Victoria, Tootsie, and Yentl). Karen celebrates Pride month by getting into the FX docuseries, Pride alongside the series finale of Pose, while Wynter dishes about the cast shake-ups on RHOC.

The two brace themselves as the state of California lifts all Coronavirus restrictions, and coin their own nuo-lingo, #unvaxxinista in the process, even as they explain another one. Plus there is a super soft rock vibe to this week that foreshadows what’s in store in the future.

01 Feb 2021Ep. 60: FOREVER 2101:03:20

Karen and Wynter kick off season 4 and 2021--the year this millennium is finally old enough to drink--with reflections on when they each turned 21. For Wynter, it was 2001, and she recalls her days tearing up the San Francisco scene, while immersing herself in new tech & the internet as her primary form of entertainment. Karen throws us back to 1994, the year she turned 21 and took her first trip ever to NYC for Stonewall 25. It was the year that The Real World: San Francisco with Pedro Zamora shared the airwaves with Friends, and R&B artists like Boyz II Men and Toni Braxton ruled the pop charts alongside Ace of Base.

Plus, Wynter checks into Discovery+’s Cecil Hotel and Karen locks all her doors & windows to The Night Stalker docu-series on Netflix.

30 Aug 2019Ep. 8: Give us the Keys, Brandon: BH 90210-Brenda vs. Kelly00:48:04

Both Wynter and Karen try not to cry every time they talk about the dearly departed Luke Perry, aka Dylan McKay. The two dive headfirst into a long simmering debate from the last 30 years--Brenda vs. Kelly--as the Fox reboot, BH 90210 confounds and excites viewers with its many layers of meta. Wynter is excited about this year's VMA's (!?!?), but only because Dr. Missy Elliott received the Video Vanguard award. Karen's wife has lured her into Bachelor Nation, with this season's queer-ish Bachelor in Paradise. Plus, in NUO-LINGO, we clarify the subtle nuances between "achievement unlocked" and "goals," while our SOTW is sure to make you slow-dance like its 1992.

17 Jan 2022Ep. 81: Yellowjackets! Buzz, Buzz, Buzz01:12:59

Wynter & Karen welcome you to Season 5 with a bushel full of SPOILER ALERTS for both Search Party and the topic of their main segment, everybody’s latest obsession Yellowjackets (not that other “Yellow” TV show). Which Yellowjacket do each of them identify with vs. who they ended up with on their Buzzfeed quiz? In their eagerness to catch up at the start of the new year, Karen & Wynter get into a deep convo about the state of TV narratives as they’ve worked their way in, around or through Covid in its endemic phase. KT thinks Station Eleven is the most gorgeous show on TV, and Wynter tells us a little bit about why Search Party’s surprising turn in season 5 makes perfect sense given the state of the world. Plus Nuo-lingo goes retrolingo, and two songs-of-the-week from the Yellowjackets soundtrack that are already making our year.

19 Jul 2021Ep. 72: Ridin’ Down Fear Street: 1994 and 197801:06:01

Wynter tells Karen to suck it up for a ride down R.L. Stine’s Fear Street, especially with the release of the trilogy on Netflix and its deep GenX flex (from 1994 to 1978). SPOILERS ABOUND! Before we get to the scary parts, Karen insists we process this year’s Emmy nominations. Which categories does she deem a veritable “Sophie’s Choice”?

Meanwhile, Wynter makes some special requests of the team working on the new, Samantha-less SATC reboot. Plus, an update on all the nuo-lingo recently added to Dictionary.com, some of which our regular listeners already know, and a couple of 90s hits in keeping with our Fear Street moods.

Wynter and Karen are back with season 6 to ask each other, “what did I miss?” as they cover some of the notable pop culture moments that went down during their holiday hiatus.

Before they get into Spare, The Last of Us and M3GAN, the two debrief about the 2023 Oscars, as Wynter goes against the tide of criticism around The Whale, while Karen considers the significance of Everything, Everywhere All At Once’s sweep of the top prizes.

The two also catch up about their recent travels (KT went to Sydney for World Pride, and Wynter went to the backwoods of Washington as well as Philly with Wanda Sykes). Plus, us a nuo-lingo to ICK about and songs of the week!
26 Sep 2022Ep. 97 WRESTLING with GENX’s ANGLOPHILIA00:55:37

The end of the Elizabethan-era (part II) prompted us to reflect on how British pop culture has dominated GenX’s imaginaries, from new wave and the new romantics, to Fawlty Towers and Monty Python, to iconoclasts like Bowie and the Sex Pistols up to and including contemporary favorites the Great British Bake Off and The Crown, to the British royal family itself as pop culture.

Plus, it’s a very Hulu week for us with Welcome to Wrexham and Reboot. We drop a nuo-lingo for new relationships and two songs from beloved icons from the 80s and now.

18 Sep 2020Ep. 47: Remembering Chadwick Boseman with andré carrington01:13:00

Wynter has made some upgrades to her club, The Palace, on Grand Theft Auto, while Karen calls Away, the new mission to Mars drama on Netflix, “normporn in space.” Dr. andré carrington, a renowned scholar of race and science fiction--and a birder!--joins us for a retrospective of Chadwick Boseman’s tragically short, but illustrious career. We get beyond the superhero legacy and consider some of the real-life legends Boseman portrayed on screen. Nuo-lingo covers a term that crossed over from academia into public discourse, and we bring you a couple of songs about skies. Plus, andré tells you to watch ALL of Patti vs. Gladys--no skips!

13 Jun 2022Ep. 90: A Theysian/Gaysian Guide to Hulu’s FIRE ISLAND01:24:48
Wynter is out of the country, so Karen invited her longtime gaysian/theysian pals, Summer Kim Lee (a cultural critic and UCLA professor), and JJ Chan (an artist and designer based in Brooklyn) to talk about the highly anticipated gay(sian) rom-com, Hulu’s Fire Island. The three talk about some of their own summer gaycations together and apart, while diving deep into the details of Fire Island down to its most resonant moments with Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, to what JJ calls the “Cherry Grove aesthetic” of Margaret Cho’s house, despite the film’s setting in the Pines.

Plus: Karen takes her wife Sarah to Disneyland for her very first visit to the Magic Kingdom, JJ gosses about “eyebrow gate” on Gentleman Jack, and Summer FINALLY gets into Survivor after 42 seasons.

And, nuo-lingo from a real life millennial and three #thatgirl summer jams!

06 Mar 2020Ep. 24: Slapchop the Nad’s - A Journey with Infomercials00:52:00

Have you ever bought something “as seen on TV” and not available in stores? Wynter and Karen stroll down memory lane about the most irritating and captivating infomercials from the 80s, 90s and today, while sharing their reviews of products that either they or their parents actually bought. It’s the end of an era for the Real Housewives of Orange County with Tamara and Vicky’s departures, and Wynter is here to tell us all about it. Karen revels in Season 40 of Survivor, featuring all past winners and a whole new currency of “fire tokens.” Plus, nuo-lingo is back, so you best “pull up.”

Ever the completist, Karen re-watched all 23 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in timeline order, and reports back to us after a month living through the Infinity Saga. Wynter gets into the deja vu vibes of Tiger Woods’ recent car accident just a year after Kobe’s death, and right before our collective paniniversary. Plus, the two process HBO’s Allen vs. Farrow, and the magic of MC Hammer’s Foucauldian forays on Twitter.

10 Jul 2019Ep. 1: Pilot00:57:52

It's the debut episode of Waiting to X-hale, a Gen X-themed show with podcast veterans Wynter Mitchell-Rohrbaugh and Karen Tongson. W2X revisits the pop culture & social issues that defined Generation X from a (queer) woman-of-color perspective in a way that sheds new light on the pop culture from both then, and now. In our first episode, Wynter & Karen welcome you to their world, and debate who'd come out on top in a head-to-head showdown between SINGLES vs. REALITY BITES. We discuss whether or not each of us "belongs" in Gen X, at the same time that we consult the youngest among us--Generation Alpha--about any "nuo lingo" we should know to keep up with the zeitgeist. We wrap things up with Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise," the headliner for our weekly music video watch party.

28 Feb 2022Ep. 84: THE FUTURE OF MUSIC IS…RAISING THE DEAD?01:23:38

We’re thrilled to welcome back Ann Powers of NPR Music, and author of Good Booty: Love and Sex, Black and White, Body and Soul in American Music to talk to us about the future of music. We explore other critics’ predictions about the future, including Ted Gioia’s speculation that we may have more dead musicians performing for us in the form of holograms, deep fake vocals, and more. From A.I. K-Pop artists, to Kanye’s STEM player, and what Karen calls “micro-dosing mega mixes,” all three peer into the future together, while also listening to our past.

Wynter tells us what’s up on Love is Blind season 2, while Karen gives us the final word on her wife Sarah’s viral tweet about “cat butter.” Plus, the two get into Netflix’s Inventing Anna, which they each binged in a single sitting. Nuo-lingo explores the “vibe shift” and a resurrected SOTW accompanies a brand new one to close out the show.

02 Aug 2019Ep 4: YouTubin' with Generation X: Mentos vs. Diet Pepsi 00:53:23

Pop open a Bartles & Jaymes, and pull your rocking chair up to your laptop, Wynter and Karen get into how Generation X uses YouTube, from nostalgic forays into old commercials and landmark pop culture moments, to how-to videos and instructional content. But they don't stop there: Wynter also scours YouTube for fresh content to break us all out of our slacker rut. Speaking of slackers, Karen revisits Always Be My Maybe through the lens of the Asian slacker, while also anticipating crying a lot to Awkwafina's dramatic turn in The Farewell. Meanwhile, Wynter prepares to celebrate her first wedding anniversary like an enlightened Don Draper at Esalen, and has high praise for CNN's docuseries, The Movies.  The two stage an ad war between Mentos vs. Diet Pepsi, and ask you to sus out some "nuo lingo." As always, we close things out with a SOTW.

06 Jun 2022Ep. 89: FIGHT BACK! w/ author Raquel Gutierrez00:59:34

CW: discussions of violence, self-harm, domestic abuse, mass shooting–in other words, of our everyday lives in the U.S.A.

Wynter and Karen welcome special guest Raquel Gutierrez, author of the new book Brown Neon (out June 7). The three revive a conversation they started over drinks during the Gen X festival about vengeance movies centering women, and fantasies of fighting back in a bleak timeline moving increasingly from the genre of horror to realism.

Karen talks about why she undertook a double-feature of the new Downton Abbey film with Alex Garland’s latest, Men starring Jessie Buckley. Wynter anoints The Kids in the Hall honorary Gen X-ers, while telling us why she comfort-binged their latest revival three times.

Plus, nuo-lingo is back from retrolingo, and two VERY different songs of the week for your enjoyment.

21 Aug 2020Ep. 43: What’s Cookin’ in the Pandemic w/ Katherine Spiers01:17:57

We also get into the ins and outs of what’s happening more broadly in the food scene, from moldy jam-gate at SQIRL, to the perpetual Bon Appetit fallout. Plus, the Umbrella Academy, Michelle Obama and Rhode Island calamari at the DNC, and the etiquette/ethics of using the Reface app. Plus, we close this super-sized episode out with a very classy (because it’s British) nuo-lingo, topped off with three total BOPS.

06 Sep 2019Ep. 9: X’ed out of D23 - The Cat from Outer Space vs. Flight of the Navigator00:58:06

Disney rolls out the reboots at its annual D23 convention and--surprise, surprise--there's little to tickle the fancies of Generation X, with all the devotion to Lizzie McGuire & HSM. Wynter & Karen remedy that by telling you which Disney reboots from the 70s & 80s they'd be interested in seeing, especially between The Cat from Outer Space vs. Flight of the Navigator. Karen fishes for a Netflix sponsorship by theming her birthday party, aka "Leztopia" after Wine Country. She also tells us what's brewing on the final season of Showtime's The Affair. Wynter follows up her previous VMA chatter with a postmortem on the broadcast, as well as a general assessment of the pop music landscape. Thanks to listeners Gerald & Keith, we have two new W2X bumpers for you to hear! Plus, what's a TikTok (in Nuo-Lingo), and your SOTW.

Karen and Wynter travel all the way to the University of Mississippi in Oxford for their first live show, with special guests Kiese Laymon and Alysia Steele. The four of them get into our inappropriate objects of pop-cultural affection--or the many times each of them has been told they were wannabes, or didn’t belong for being POC who like “problematic pop objects.” Befitting their idyllic campus setting, the panel gets into how School Daze vs. Dear White People (the TV series) each explore the minefield of desire and student culture at universities.  Wynter praises Hustlers and tells us why J. Lo is the hardest working woman in show business. Karen gets into the “hard to watch,” but nevertheless must-watch Netflix series on a serial rape case, Unbelievable with Merrit Wever and Toni Collette. Plus, we have more Nuo-Lingo for you, while Kiese and Alysia bring you two slappin’ songs of the week. W2X thanks the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies, and director Professor Jaime Harker for bringing us out to Ole Miss!
