14 Aug 2023 | Phyla: Skincare That Actually Treats The Root Of Acne | 00:43:30
Interview with Dr. Yug Varma Dr. Varma is the Cofounder & CEO of Phyla, the world’s most advanced probiotic acne system. He has 10+ years of microbiome research experience including an extensive background in bio-organic chemistry, microbiology, and synthetic biology. Dr. Varma received his scientific training at several distinguished academic institutions, including Johns Hopkins University (PhD) and University of California, San Francisco. His scientific work has been published in many prestigious journals, including Nature. Dr. Varma’s mission is to change the way we treat chronic bacterial diseases, and is working tirelessly to achieve this goal with a microbiome-based technology platform. He is passionate about promoting scientific literacy, and devotes a significant amount of time demystifying microbiome research and making the latest research accessible to the general public. While developing technology, Dr. Varma discovered an application to tackle acne which he quickly realized is a serious problem without a safe, high-quality solution on the market. So he set out to build Phyla and the 3-Step Phyla Phage System, to meet the unmet consumer need for clean, effective skincare and acne-fighting products. Phyla’s breakthrough technology uses a naturally occurring organism called bacteriophage (phage, for short) that specifically targets the overgrowth of acne bacteria. This phage has been shown to flourish in healthy skin, but is nearly absent on acne-affected skin. Dr. Varma decided to democratize this revolutionary organism, put it in a bottle, and make it accessible to everyone who needs it. Links:

23 Oct 2023 | So Much More Than A Perm | 01:14:26
Sponsored by JCPenney Salons Interview with Janine Jarman Janine Jarman is a nationally renowned celebrity hairstylist and the founder of Hairroin Salon LA & NYC, the home of Hollywood and New York’s best tressed. Born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA, Jarman has been “hair-obsessed” for as long as she can remember. At the age of 15, she teamed up with her best friend to offer hair and makeup services to her party-bound classmates. Jarman then moved on to beauty school, and after graduating, she immediately began shooting for the stars. Jarman steadily built a loyal client base until she was bit by the entrepreneurial bug in 2005. She purchased a failing salon and immediately re-branded and re-opened it as Hairroin Salon. Hairroin instantly became Tinseltown’s newest obsession, garnering Hollywood clientele including Florence Welch, Tommy Lee, Kylie Minogue, Danica Patrick, and Fergie. For many years Jarman was the key stylist and official hairdresser for the world’s most successful female pop group, The Pussycat Dolls. Jarman was the creator of their signature look, which led to work with celebrities such as Christina Applegate, Britney Spears, Lil’ Kim, and Carmen Electra. Jarman has also been the principal hairstylist for television shows including ”Beauty and the Geek,” “The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for The Next Doll,” endless commercial spots, and live shows like the MTV Movie Awards. In 2010 she burst into the national spotlight as a finalist on the third season of Bravo’s hit show “Shear Genius.” Jarman instantly became a favorite among the judges and was voted Fan Favorite of her season, standing out for her fearless hair creations, free spirit, and endless amounts of energy. Having naturally curly hair herself, she leaned into using perms to solve texture issues her clients were facing – but felt the need to reimagine the traditional perm process, odor and environmental impact. This led her to Italy where she conjured up Curl Cult, delivering a simpler, healthier, more sustainable texturizing treatment with at-home curl support products even natural curls will love. Links:

17 Oct 2022 | Changing The Industry. Texture Vs Race | 01:02:53
Interview with Keya Neal A stylist whose passion for color and texture is unmatched with over 28 years of experience, Keya Neal leads a national revolution breaking textural boundaries that have long separated those in the hair industry. Keya’s passion for hair color and education led to the conception of Kolour Kulture, an educational resource for stylists who are particularly interested in the science of hair color and how it interacts with various hair textures. Keya launched her cornerstone education series “Texture vs Race” at The Energizing Summit hosted by the American Board of Certified Hair Colorist (ABCH), which has since become a nationwide movement with a summit of its very own. Texture Vs Race has amassed the support of top industry influences, including but not limited to the board of the American Board of Certified Hair Colorists. Through the evolution of Texture vs Race and her REPAIRations movement, Keya is at the helm of the salon industry's diversity and inclusion movement, encouraging "uncomfortable" conversations surrounding race and hair texture. Now, Keya acts as a color educator, texture expert, and DEI consultant, working to create a more inclusive and understanding industry. The fourth annual Texture VS Race Summit tackles the salon industry's long-standing textural discrimination and favoritism towards straight hair through hands-on education and anti-racism coaching. Each year, hopeful stylists graduate from beauty school with a standardized education that leaves them wholly unprepared and undereducated to serve a rapidly diversifying clientele. The Texture VS Race Summit, hosted by salon industry DEI consultant and color educator Keya Neal, offers education on cutting, coloring, and styling all hair textures.

04 Apr 2022 | The Woman Behind the Cult-Favorite K18: Britta Cox | 01:05:22
Interview with Britta Cox Britta Cox is Founder of Aquis and co-founder of K18. In 1990, Britta Cox decided there had to be a better, healthier way to dry your hair. One that didn’t include using a bulky, friction-causing bath towel. With her ski industry background, knowledge of sports fiber technology, and an entrepreneurial mindset, she set out to find a fabric that alleviated the annoyance she experienced drying her hair. In partnership with a lab in Japan, she developed the now signature proprietary AQUITEX™fabric after months of testing. With this fabric, Britta was finally able to dry her hair the way she wanted, protecting hair at its weakest (when wet) and resulting in frizz-free, shiny, healthy hair and less dry time. Next came the iconic design. In 1999, Britta secured the patent for the hands-free wrap shape which to this date is the gold standard for the hair drying turban category. With over a million wraps and towels sold every year, AQUIS is a beloved routine staple across the globe, delivering healthy hair with less. Aga’s journey began when she founded her salon – Rock Razor Scissors – and quickly scaled it from local business to market leader by providing niche services to touring artists. Before she moved on to her next adventure, her business would serve some of the largest names in music, including Radiohead, Panic at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Deftones, and Roger Waters. This experience opened the door to celebrity image development, and Aga fell in love with building and managing strategic brand images for some of the largest names in music. She served as Carly Rae Jepsen’s Global Tour Hairstylist/MUA for nearly a decade, expertly seizing the opportunity to build and manage a strategic brand and image for the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and actor. She designed hair and makeup for Jepsen’s appearances on and in SNL, the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Cosmopolitan, Allure, and The New York Times. More importantly, Aga drew on both her passion for style and commitment to authenticity to design the long-term strategy and direction for the artist’s image. In doing so, she considered Jepsen’s personality alongside upcoming trends. Most recently, Aga demonstrates her love of motivation, training, and growth to teach image, authenticity, and beauty as Territory Brand Manager for Amika while continuing to tour the world as a guest speaker in the industry. One of her favorite teaching opportunities is serving as a Pro Educator and Content Creator for America’s Beauty Show. She creates and and maintains education and training materials from concept to execution while also directing live Zoom Continuing Education classes. At Amika, Aga has the opportunity to onboard, train, and mentor a sales team – as well as her clients’ employees – across an 11-state territory. In addition to managing everything from onboarding and training to mentoring and employee engagement, she creates content, designs innovative social media posts, and serves on the DEI and Giving Back Committee as a co-lead for their partnership with Beauty Changes Lives. Whether she’s traveling the country educating about beauty and authenticity or training team members to create a solid culture of growth and success, Aga applies her passion for professional development, understanding of image, and commitment to excellence to everything she does. After continually cutting hair through high school, in 2005, realizing cosmetology school education was brief and inexpensive, he decided to enroll. For his 29th birthday, he set a goal that he would open a salon in 1 year. Ten months later “Hair” opened up to the public. From there his empire only grew, he decided to create his own hair oil, enter Monte Rio Hair & Body Oil. And when he saw a need to help stylists create virally trending looks, ColorMap was born. This patented technology helps artists visually see results before application and is used by numerous educators across the globe to teach color theory! As he moves forward with building Josh Comeaux Hair, his goal is to educate and motivate more stylists to be their best.

Produced by The Tease alongside Volume Up by The Tease. This month on Tease Talks we are talking with Sharie Wilson and Tonya Thompson, co-founders of DreamGirls, to talk about owning multiple salons and product innovation! DreamGirls is a women-owned, family-owned, and Black-owned salon and hair care line. DreamGirls Co-Founders Sharie Wilson and Tonya Thompson are on a mission to debunk the myth that black women *can’t* have long, healthy hair and change the negative narrative around natural hair and instead, be champions for textured hair. Thompson and Wilson are professional hairstylists with over a decade of experience who are recognized for their reputation of having “magic hair-growing hands.” They’ve made it not only their expertise but passion to help black women's hair reach its greatest potential in both strength and length through the DreamGirls Healthy Hair Program and product line. Their journey began in 2001 when Sharie moved from her hometown, Los Angeles to Sacramento to pursue a job in corporate America, only to find herself returning home after long workdays to do what she truly loved...hair. Tonya has always had a passion for helping women gain confidence and feel beautiful by doing their hair and with an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age. She was the girl who did everyone’s hair before school dances and even casually on the weekends. In 2006, Tonya’s love for helping women feel beautiful through hair came full circle after Sharie presented her with a business venture of selling hair extensions. This quickly led to both sisters starting an apprenticeship to receive their cosmetology license and opening up the first DreamGirls salon which allowed them to get back to doing what they loved most- hair. The DreamGirls product line was released at the start of COVID-19 and helped provide hair care solutions to everyone at home who could no longer visit a salon. Since then, the product line expanded into curl and styling products as well as accessories for all hair types. DreamGirls products are color & straightener safe with UV protection and are infused with key ingredients that maintain and promote healthy hair growth such as Peppermint Oil, Pro Vitamin B5, Soybean Oil and Lavender while leaving out Parabens, Sulfates, and Sodium Chloride. Sharie and Tonya are also co-founders of Mixed Institute of Cosmetology & Barber, a school dedicated to teaching students how to style all hair textures.

She is a national exam item writer and participated in the Safe Nevada project as well as the Department of Labor Occupational Licensing Consortium. Today we’re talking about the Cosmetology Interstate Licensure Compact. According to the Professional Beauty Association’s website The Cosmetology Compact is an interstate occupational licensure compact. Interstate compacts are constitutionally authorized, legislatively enacted, legally binding agreements among states. The Cosmetology Compact will enable licensed cosmetologists to practice in all states that join the compact, rather than getting an individual license in every state in which they want to practice. Like the compact for a driver’s license, each compact member state agrees to mutually recognize the practitioner licenses issued by every other member state. Links:

Send in your questions via email to volumeup@thetease.com. Intro Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thedadbodveteran/video/7308110768635907370 Interview with Autumn Yarbrough Autumn Yarbrough didn’t want to go bald like the three generations of women before Her. So, she created a NU Standard to ensure no woman ever does. NU Standard is a revolutionary company with a hair wellness approach toward textured hair. The products aren’t just for black women because it’s a black-owned company, NU Standard’s products are designed to help all women with textured hair. It’s about setting a NU Standard in the haircare industry and helping women overcome their hair challenges and achieve their hair goals But it’s not just about hair wellness. Autumn caters to busy women on the go whether they work from home, corporate America or spend the day as CEO of their families. Bottom line: She understands some women have a few minutes not hours to get their hair just right, so they feel confident while avoiding what seems inevitable: hair damage and hair loss. Autumn wanted to create products that made it easy to care for textured hair without damaging or losing it. She was determined to develop a solution for her Busy Queens, especially those with textured hair, to prevent hair loss. Autumn’s blessing is that the haircare industry has been part of her life since birth. After all, her grandfather, Comer Cottrell Jr., created a haircare company in the late 60s that became a global company. Her mom created successful brands that still thrive and her father has helped restructure several haircare companies and some have grown into overnight successes. Autumn grew up in the business. She worked on the assembly line as an eight-year-old and dabbled in various departments until she went to college. After graduating from USC, Autumn found success in the world of finance and insurance. But the stress from running her company was starting to affect her hair. The more she thought about it, the more Autumn knew she needed to follow her passion and help those women with textured hair keep it healthy and strong. She initially struggled with changing her career midlife but she wanted to do something that would really affect people’s lives. To build her company, Autumn emphasized one of her grandfather’s tenets of business: Build a team of people who are smarter than you to make the dream come true. She set her ego aside and asked the best in the industry for help to build a NU Standard. Links:

Interview with Yene Damtew Yene Damtew has made quite a name for herself as a go-to for unsurpassable standards of fashion-forward hairdressing. Being a self-starter far into her youth, Yene styled hair out of her parent's home and enrolled herself early into cosmetology school at age 16. Upon graduating, the Ethiopian-American, California native launched her career and within six months she packed her bags and moved to Washington, DC, to become a hair stylist to the Obama Family. This life changing position allowed her to take her skills beyond the chair, collaborating with makeup artists and fashion designers doing covers and complete editorial shoots. Her standard of excellence in both high fashion and classical hair, energetic attitude, tireless work ethic and her insatiable desire to keep learning has kept her far ahead of the game. Publications including Allure, GQ, Vogue, The Michelle Obama Podcast and others have featured her, noting her “Good Hair is Healthy Hair” philosophy with a modern edge keeps a roster of Hollywood and political elite happy and coming back. With over 15 years of experience, Yene has worked in almost all areas of the industry. In 2015, Yene earned her Bachelors of Business Administration from Marymount University. She has opened two locations of Aesthetics Salon where she has created an inclusive community of top- rated stylist that fully embrace the concept of connecting and educating the everyday woman on haircare.
