It’s November and as we stare down the barrel of the Holiday Season, it's clear that 2023 has held more change and transition for the VO business than any of us knew at the start of the year. We’ve also seen some change and transition in the PSP platforms, especially at the largest of the VO-specific platforms, Voices, as they replaced Founder David Ciccarelli as CEO with interim CEO Jay O’Connor in October. So today as we start wrapping our heads around 2024, I think there’s an opportunity here to begin to repair a fraught relationship between the platform and the voice over community, and so I thought I’d write an open letter to Voices and Interim CEO, Jay O’Connor. I believe that Voices can run a healthy, profitable business, provide significant value for shareholders, and have an ethical, collaborative relationship with the voice actors who provide the services upon which Voices is built. If I asked 100 voice actors to tell me what they do for a living, how many do you think would use the word freelance? Probably zero. The truth is, if you’re a voice actor, you are a freelancer. What does that mean? First, it means you are not an employee. It means working for different companies at different times rather than being permanently employed by one company. It means you’re self-employed. That means you are solely responsible for all the functions of any company. Production, logistics and project management, accounting, payroll, and taxes, HR, creative, and most importantly sales and marketing. We get so in the weeds of doing our voice actory things that we forget that we are in fact freelancers first, and that many of the issues, obstacles, and adversities we deal with are not unique to voiceover. Graphic designers, copywriters, illustrators, website designers, content writers, video producers, social media managers, animators, and user interface designers all deal with muck of the same day-to-day stuff as we do. In fact, voice actor is not even in top 10 most common forms of creative freelance work. We are part of a massive freelance community, and most of the time, we don’t even realize it. According to Upwork in 2023, the number of American professionals freelancing increased to 64 million, or 38% of the U.S workforce, an increase of 4 million from 2022. Gen Z actually prefers freelance work. 53% of Gen Z freelances, not as a side hustle, but as a long-term career choice. I believe that voiceover should be a meritocracy. I believe that if you invest time and money and effort into training, if you work on your skills every day, if you're driven and you're passionate and you're talented, then you should be able to make a comfortable living in this business as I have. Music Radio Creative’s Izabela Russell recently said on their channel that she sees a mass exodus happening in the voice over industry. And while Izabela’s take is stark, and blunt, it’s not new. Do I agree with her? Yes. And no. I’ll get to that. I agree, and I’ve said this for years, that AI will obliterate the bottom end of the industry where price is and always has been the primary driver. And I think that’s a good thing because for those of us who have taken the time and effort to get the training, build our businesses, and command pro rates, AI will take clients who don’t care about quality in the first place off the table. It will give them a better solution to their problem, and it will eliminate or at least minimize the garbage work out there for human voice actors. And for those who haven’t taken that time and effort, I do think there is a reckoning coming. So, what do we do? As voice actors? So, you’ve decided you want to get into voice acting and learn to do voiceovers and maybe even become a professional voice actor one day. Great! As the song says, yes, there are two paths you can go by. First, maybe you just want to make a few bucks, have some fun and maybe make voiceover a hobby. You can jump on Fiverr or Upwork and find a ton of jobs to audition for and that’s great. But if you think you might want to go pro one day, or even if you don’t know, but want to find out, don’t go the Fiverr route. Fiverr, Upwork, and the freelancer sites can actually damage your career if you ever want to go pro. One of the biggest objections I hear from voice actors is I don’t want to be spammy in my email marketing. And I get what people are saying here, and they’re right. They don’t want to be perceived as sending irrelevant, salesy, sleazy messages to poorly targeted, or not targeted at all, people. In other words, if they reach out to prospects, they want that to be a quality engagement and I 110% support that philosophy. BUT there’s another kind of spam. And it’s this second kind that you may be sending and not even know it. It’s unintentional spam. It’s messaging that you’ve taken the time to craft, taken the time to target your prospects, taken the time to try to do all the things right, and yet it’s not even making it to your prospect’s inbox, because the ESPs, the email service providers are marking it as spam and culling it from the system before you’ve ever had the chance to say Hello. I was in a dark place. I had been through a series of jobs for about a year each. I had largely failed at each one of them. I was a single Dad. I was paying my bills but just barely, living paycheck to paycheck. Near the end I was working for people I didn’t respect. I didn’t believe in the company. I wasn’t enjoying any success at that job I was sure I was going to be fired in a year. I was approaching 50 and was just thoroughly sick of working for other people, sick of doing jobs I had no passion for, sick of at-work politics, sick of it all, but I had no real options. Or hope. Plan A was find another sh*tty job and do the best I could to put food on the table. Now, just to be clear, I was not suicidal. But I was moderately depressed. I dreaded every day at work. As solopreneurs, voice actors are often put in a no-win position, faced with having to oversee their website design, or do it themselves, and yet most have no experience or expertise in designing a website. If you’re a professional voice actor or audiobook narrator, your job is to stay in the game as long as possible. Voiceover is not a long game. It’s an infinite game. Author Simon Sinek says that in finite games, like football or chess, the players are known, the rules are fixed, and the endpoint is clear. The winners and losers are easily identified. In infinite games, like business or voiceover or life itself, the players come and go, the rules are changeable, and there is no defined endpoint. In VO, the players come and go all the time. Every day people come into and get out of this business. The rules of voice over change all the time… this audition wants natural and authentic, this one wants classic announcer, the next wants something offbeat and quirky, and on and on. And of course in voice over and in business there is no defined endpoint. That’s why so often you hear it referred to as a journey. There is no destination. The following post appeared December 21st, 2023 on the VOcation Facebook Group: “Hey everyone. I didn’t want to have to make this post, but I’m trying to look out for others. There is a demo producer and coach who specializes in Children’s Media who has taken money from actors promising to make demos, and then just never made the demos. Some of these demos came in a “2 for 1 package” where one demo was made and the other wasn’t. Other demos have just never been made. This person has also hired adult and child actors for jobs, which they completed, and never paid them. I really don’t want to call them out by name, but if you ask around, this has become prevalent enough that people likely know who I’m referring to. I hope this keeps some people from giving their time and/or money and getting nothing in return.” Soon after, that demo producer and coach was identified by multiple people on the VOcation Facebook Group as Lisa Biggs, and the original poster has come forward and identified herself as Carin Gilfry. Earlier, in November of 2023, a group of voice actors sent an anonymous letter to the National Association of Voice Actors detailing their allegations, which in some cases, date back possibly as far as a decade. As many as 100 people now allege that Biggs has violated agreements she made with them. Three of the alleged victims have courageously stepped forward to tell their stories. Just about everything in the voice over business slows down in June, July, and August. But I also hear a lot of talk about a more macro slowdown in the voice over industry overall. Is that real? Is that just a chicken little reaction to AI? Are there other forces at play? Is this a perfect storm that means existential crisis for our business? Do you want the real answer? Who cares. In my humble opinion, which is all I have because there is no data on this that anyone is aware of, yes there appears to be a general slowdown in the industry for many voice actors. The fact is you, I, nor the ghost of Don LaFontaine himself can’t control the global macro and micro forces that may or may not contribute to a slowdown that may or may not be having but think so because, ya know, AI and P2Ps and el Niño and sunspots and windmills. So, who cares? It doesn’t even matter if there’s a slowdown in the industry or not. If it’s slow for you, it’s slow. And if there is a slowdown in the industry, macro or micro, you can’t do shit about it. But you can do something with it. You have the choice to not just survive, but thrive. What you are about to hear is an actual call about an exploitative practice that is too common in our business. It is a prime example of a tiny number of producers who purposefully seek out younger and/or less experienced talent and knowingly exploit them for the benefit of their own organizations. This call is shocking in its brazen self-awareness. The following is a clip of a call I recently had with a producer for a non-profit religious organization that produces and distributes video and audio content on an international scale. The media they produce and place is both broadcast, meaning TV, radio, and web, and other non-broadcast media.
