Zoey Shamai is the founder and president at Tonica Kombucha, a Canadian beverage company. Zoey’s entrepreneurial journey began in early childhood witnessing her mother, a health entrepreneur, pioneer a line of hemp and chia food products. While becoming a certified yoga instructor, Zoey was introduced to kombucha tea. Moved by the immediate effect it had on her digestion, Zoey became an avid kombucha brewer and began to share her fermented beverage with her community. At a time when there were no other kombucha brands on the market in Canada, she became the first commercial kombucha brewer in Toronto. Although Tonica started as a love hobby, the overwhelming response Zoey got from consumers grateful for the digestive aid and skin cleansing from her fermented tea made it clear - this was just the beginning. And Tonica Kombucha was borne. By 2011, Zoey had grown Tonica Kombucha to be sold in over 100 retail stores across Canada. In 2012 Zoey appeared on CBC’s Dragons’ Den with a winning pitch. Her appearance garnered international attention and though she declined the deal with the dragons off-air, the appearance opened doors to mainstream retailers. In 2016, Dragons’ Den featured Zoey again in a Success Story follow-up episode where they profiled Tonica’s production and filmed Zoey teaching a yoga class. Today on the show, we have an extra special guest & long time friend of mine.. Kate! Kate is a plant-loving creative and flight attendant. She is the owner and creator of Rally & Roots, which is an Etsy shop that specializes in happy home decor (in the form of personalized clay pots). For over five years Kate has worked as a flight attendant for a Canadian airline, and although she still loves the flexibility, travel and perks of the job, two years ago she was itching to do something creative on her time off. After accumulating a few too many plants, Kate decided to paint her own clay pots and hand stamp cute phrases on them. They were so loved by family and friends that her husband nudged her to try selling them online. Kate turned to Etsy, a handmade and vintage selling platform, where she opened a shop, posted a few photos, and as easy as that, Rally & Roots was born. What started as a side hustle and hobby quickly turned into a full-time business that Kate has poured her heart and soul into. In just over two years, the hand painted planters can be found living in 45 US States, 9 Canadian Provinces and in both the UK and Australia. This week, I’m sitting down with Natalie James, founder and CEO of Vent Blow Dry Bar. Natalie is also a wife, mom of three, and she’s got such a relatable story behind her recent leap into entrepreneurship. In this episode, I begin by sharing how we’re in another situation of “dichotomies” right now... LIFE IS A MIXED-BAG OF HAPPY & SAD, WINS & LOSSES FOR ALL OF US
& then, there are days when you feel panic & fear (hello COVID-19), yet also celebrate a major business milestone (yay 100 episodes!). I didn’t think that I would be writing a message like this - acknowledging COVID-19 - but after joining a call with 15 of my "colleagues" (aka My Weekly Mastermind), I feel passionate about supporting the conversation during this interesting and challenging time. I’d love to hear from you... 1) How is COVID-19 affecting your life & business, right now? When you write it out, you can get an objective view of what's really suffering & what's just NOT WORKING with no relation to COVID-19 2) Ask yourself - Am I willing to continue planting seeds? Can I adapt under pressure? Am I good at problem-solving in times of change? (or do I simply complain?) 3) Ask yourself - Am I going to be a leader or a follower in times of crises? 4) Ask yourself - Will this crisis force me to innovate my offer? If you've been fearful, experiencing extra anxiety, or have seen a decline in revenue - I see you and I hear you. We will rise through this, together. Many of my peers rely on Speaking Gigs (cancelled) or Teaching Fitness Classes (cancelled) or Serving as a Flight Attendant (TBD), so I am feeling the ripple strongly in my direct circle of friends and family. Of course, I feel it directly in my own life and business as well - as teaching workshops and hosting events is a vital part of my marketing strategy. There is no easy solution to OVERCOME this temporary lock-down on our potential, but there is an opportunity to be problem-solvers, innovators, and solution providers in this time of crisis. NOTHING GOOD COMES A 24/7 PANIC. It's rare that innovation or world-changing solutions to problems are born from panic & fear, because when you PANIC and live in FEAR you are in Fight or Flight Mode. Parasympathetic State. That's not where good ideas come from. So, although we cannot predict the severity of COVID-19, we can predict the pattern. There will likely be an UPSWING after this DOWNTURN. Instead of contracting during this time, can you continue to think about how you can serve? Can you plant your seeds, adapt, problem-solve & create a *new way* to foster connection + a new way to support your business, as our needs change as consumers? As VISIONARIES - we have to be solutions minded: More virtual events, alternatives for building community, ways for people to learn and grow during times of quarantine...etc. We also need to use this time wisely:

I’ll start with something that I saw Netflix post about… To be silent is to be complicit. Black lives matter. We have a platform, and we have a duty to our Black members, employees, creators and talent to speak up.
I’ve not been overly vocal, for fear of getting it wrong,⠀ But I also don’t want to stay silent.⠀ I’m sure many of you can echo that sentiment.
It’s not often that I think about my own privilege as a white woman, but then again my daily life protects me from the daily fears that others live with.⠀ To be here… to be comfortable… to be podcasting… that is a privilege. To be here… to be comfortable… to have a platform… that is a privilege. To be here, to be comfortable, to feel safe… that is a privilege.
But it shouldn’t just be a privilege that some can tap into. It should be for all. Equity in opportunity to create, to live and to express is deserved by all. I want to meet my vision of helping 7 billion people to live and lead their most visionary life, but we cannot do that without equality I get in a car without the fear of being pulled over… I set out on a run without worrying about which route I will take…. But this is not everyone’s reality.⠀ And that’s not okay.⠀ One of the core values of my business Visionary Life is that Visionary Thinking Changes the World-- and this is a time when we need you, me and our communities to put on their thinking cap to see HOW we are going to shift this. It’s taken too long to find justice.This is a lesson in so many ways. What I know for sure is that Equality Is Deserved by All. Especially for BIPOC who have not had it.⠀ That will ONLY change when we each do the work. Individually. When we drop our ignorance. When we stand up for injustice.⠀When we listen to the voices of those who have not been heard. I know that I need to step up. I need to invest in learning from BIPOC and understanding how I can support the change. I need to take a critical eye as to how I can transform myself and my business, and how I am contributing to the lack of equality that I say I am not okay with. I need to take ownership.⠀ I need to do my homework And it’s unacceptable that it has taken the current state of affairs for me to make this priority.⠀ It’s inexcusable.⠀ Tune in to hear more. | |||

Nielsen’s is a full service bike shop that was originally started by Matt’s Father, but in 2012 the shop closed indefinitely when his father Kurt was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. When you think gluten-free, do you think flavour free? Texture free? Taste free?
I know I once did, until I started finding gluten-free options to my typical pastas & pastries that actually tasted BETTER than anything I could find at a conventional grocery store. Yepp, it’s possible. In today’s episode I am sitting down with Stephanie Dunn, the co-owner of Muskoka’s first dedicated Gluten Free Facility and Sit-Down Restaurant, The Pasta Shoppe. The Pasta Shoppe by Beat the Wheat is the brainchild of owner’s Stephanie & her husband Adam. Their shop features an incredible array of products ranging from fresh gluten free pastas, gluten free entrees, gluten free Breads & pastries. As I mentioned earlier, The Pasta Shoppe by Beat the Wheat is the only restaurant in Muskoka that is 100% gluten-free and peanut-free - and though some critics may have worried that there wasn’t a large enough market for these types of products in canada’s cottage country, Steph and Adam have proved that that is just simply not true. Especially when your gluten-free offerings are equally (or even more tasty) than the non-gluten-free counterparts. Steph is soft spoken yet powerful with her words, and although her husband & co-founder Adam was unable to join - I know you’re going to love hearing how the idea for a gluten-free shop came to be, why they settled on Bracebridge as a location, how they maintain a strong rapport with their community and their customers, why no market is TOO small or too defined, how to get scrappy with your marketing, and so much more. p.s. Earlier this year, I had the chance to attend the launch of an incredible foundation called Impact Zero, created by my friend Erin Andrews. At this event, I met 2 incredible individuals named Tanis and Mara who are the founders of an eco-friendly, package-free refillery in midtown Toronto called The Green Jar. More than just a shop though, Tanis and Mara are educators & community members who are on a mission to ensure that zero waste is accessible and less intimidating. Tannis and Mara spent their formative years on a 50 acre horse farm in the 1970’s and would spend their summers with their grandmother in the Swiss Alps, where low waste, package-free shopping was the norm. Tannis and Mara have memories of daily trips into town with their Grandmother to visit the baker, butcher and fromager, allowing one to catch-up with the proprietors and neighbours about the daily events. The sisters wanted to recreate a sense of community and similar feel in their space, but awaited the right time to open their own shop. As young adults, Tannis and Mara were frustrated with the amount of plastic waste they saw in their city. Their efforts to maintain their sustainable lifestyle by buying package-free products in bulk had them travelling all over the city, requiring lots of planning. There had to be a better way! The Green Jar was created in order to support a circular economy by assisting their community in reducing (and one day eliminating) household waste and single-use plastics, as well as embracing an eco-friendly lifestyle. This is an inspiring and informative conversion. We talk about their experience opening a shop just a mere few months before COVID, how they pivoted with the persistence of the global pandemic, some of the most valuable investments they made while planning out their store & who they hired, top items to switch to eco friendly, what sparked the idea to open the shop, how they built a community of customers, the most important things to have in place if you want to open a retail space, and more!
