Using food during training can be both beneficial and detrimental.  State of mind is more important than physical body position but we need them to work together before we start using food.

Sometimes we don't want to "push" our dogs outside of their comfort zone because we don't want to stress them out.  But how will they ever learn?

I'm not gonna lie, I came down hard in this video which was from a live feed on my Vermont Dog Trainer Facebook page.  It was a follow up to another live video where I asked what everyone's #1 struggle with their dog was.  

We have to be realistic of our expectations, otherwise we are setting up our dogs (and us) to fail.

I think there is a misconception about what is and the severity of it. Even though the result of a nip isn't as bad as a bite, the behavior is the same.

Interhousehold dog fighting is one of the toughest things to deal with as a dog owner.  Dogs have to be kept separate all the time with gates, crates, kennels, or leashes.  It's a tough way to live and I don't wish it on anyone.  Get some insight on my thoughts on this subject! 

When I sat down with Liz I got the feeling that I was sitting down with an old friend.  It's actually been years since we have spoken but we quickly found out that we both have similar trajectories in our career.  Liz is re-defining what a dog daycare is, even to the point of renaming it a "social club".

This might be some of the best advice I've given out.  If you take your dog to a park, path, or to play dates this is the episode for you!  I've learned so much lately from observing dogs meeting each other and playing for the first time.  It's all about how they establish rules first before they get right into playing.  They need to be taught to one another before the game starts.  Enjoy!

This was a phrase that was brought up to me me a couple of weeks ago.  It refers to a dog not having a choice in what the handler is doing to the dog.  I think there are some misconceptions here and Matt and I give some great examples of it.

What are your thoughts?

The Miami International Airport is looking to add therapy dogs to help travelers with their anxiety of traveling.  It's an interesting concept that could prove to be quite valuable to some leery passengers.  Here is my take.

Matt has a special announcement before we got on the discussion of cats.  The cat subject is a hot topic among dog owners as this is an on-going issue for many people.  There is some good advice in this episode for you cat & dog owners out there. 

Take 1 behavior that you don't like that your dog shows and I can guarantee you can break that behavior down into many steps.  Once you determine what the very first step is in the bad behavior then you know when and where to interrupt it.

This is an issue that affects many dog owners today.  A dog that won't let you have a toy, bone, or food if you go to reach for it.  What do you do?

It's been an interesting week with the Scout Video.  It's now over 16k views and still climbing.  I've been praised, and also slammed for how I handled the group that day.  At least the majority has been positive feedback.

This is a subject I come across a lot with my clients and I think it's a natural to do as a dog owner.  Comparing our past dogs with our current dogs can be okay if you can understand they are different personalities and temperaments.  But the problem occurs when owners don't understand why there are differences and wonder why their current dog isn't like their past dogs.

There are dogs that carry stress especially in the environment that is unstructured to them.  It's important for us to remove as much stress as we can.  In this episode I talk about the 4 steps to remove stress from your dog:

The rules of the game are an important aspect in the world of socializing dogs.  Understanding how dogs set boundaries first followed by play is essential in the dog world.  Listen in to how I discovered this in my own setting and how it pertains to your dog at home.

If you know Jason then you know he's a pretty down to earth guy.  Hearing his story of how he "stole" his neighbors dog for his dog to play with when he was 7 years old was GREAT!  He is very well known for his Large Field Socializing where he can have anywhere between 80-130 dogs in a field with their owners at the same time.  His journey started in a camp where he would train dogs for 2 weeks at a time.  Now he is planning a trip to Spain where he was invited to teach a workshop.  So grab a cup of coffee (or an iced tea if you are in the south) and enjoy a great conversation with dog trainer Jason Vasconi.

We had an incident here during daycare last week and I'm flying solo for this podcast.  Find out what happened! 

Earlier this week I had a client of mine refer to their dog as a "Free Agent".  I was so intrigued by this term for her dog so as I dug deeper I quickly realized he was "on his own" for decision making at home.  Listen to this episode as I will describe what's best for the dog. 

When Linn was here to work with us he used a term I had never heard before - Social Pressure.  Now that he made us aware of it I see it everywhere!  Here is my explanation of what it is and how it can manifest itself into certain behaviors!

Where have I been? Working with dogs and not having much time for anything else. But it’s been a fun couple of weeks seeing dogs the way I never have. Using sensitivity - theirs and mine - to better our communication. This is what I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m a beginner at it to a degree. But I’m looking forward to this journey, and I’m happy you are on it with me.

Squeaker toys are always a fun debate to have because they can be both fun and detrimental to some dogs.  One positive aspect is that it can keep a dog busy but the negative is some squeakers can create an obsessive behavior.  In this episode we dive in a little deeper to see how the dogs look at them.

Boredom and Learning are on 2 opposite ends of the spectrum in my opinion.  On one end you have boredom which can lead to many bad behaviors with your dog.  On the other end you have learning which can lead to knowledge, exposure, and a stronger bond with your dog. 

And in the middle of this spectrum is a grounded and content dog.  One that is being fulfilled and listens well to you, as long as you are keeping them mentally engaged.

Mike admits that he was a "troubled youth" which led him into working at a kennel which led him into Ring Work for the breeder.  As he grew older he ended up in the army and was asked to work with the military dogs which was a very interesting conversation.  Mike seems as cool as a cucumber and I'm sure the dogs he works with can sense it as well!

I'm a firm believer of giving respect to the dog before they give it to you.  It's disrespectful to put a tool on a dog and immediately use it to communicate with them.  We have to show them respect and take our time.....as trainers it's our job to take the time. 

We have many objects in our house that can be used like a training tool.  However you may be surprised to hear how much a door can help you establish the behavior you desire in the entry area of your home.

I remember when I first learned about dogs and adrenaline, it was a game changer.  There is excitement and then there is adrenaline.  We come across many dogs that are adrenalized and some dogs even know how to release the adrenaline in their own bodies and can become adrenaline junkies.  Learn how to recognize it, handle it, and how to avoid it.

It's been a BUSY couple of weeks with President's Week and also School Vacation week.  We have some dogs boarding with us that we haven't seen in a while.  Previously we would have dealt with these dogs differently because that's all we had known.  But since we now know how to deal with these tougher boarding dogs it has opened up a whole new world for us.  Take a listen and email me to let me know what you think.

I think dog owners change things too quickly for our dogs if we think something isn't working.  Too often it's a change of tools or methods which keeps the dog confused.  Instead, stick to routine and let your dog understand the pattern you are trying to establish with your dog.  Then your communication becomes clearer.

The story this week has been the heat and the deer flies with the dogs.  It's been fun walking the dogs as we have explored nearby trails and now we have worked our way up to a pack walk of 23 dogs at one time.  Personally, I have had a heck of a time finding a good bug spray!!!

I'm humbled that there are so many people listening to my podcast.  I took a moment to reflect on the past 2+ years and what it has all meant to me.  I hope you are getting something from this podcast and if you are truly enjoying it, please share it with your dog friends.

Serena and I sit talk about the dogs that have come to us that we haven't been able to help.  This is a touchy subject but I felt that it needed to be talked about. 

It was great to finally record a podcast with Tim.  He is currently in the middle of an expansion and wait until you hear how small his previous facility was.  Tim is a down to earth guy who wants to help people and learn as much as he can along the way.  After hearing this episode you will know why Tim and I get along so well. 

Well after I got back from vacation we had some overnight drama at work.  Nobody was hurt but we can look back it now and laugh. Let's just say Serena had her work cut out for her.  LOL

I sat down with Amanda, Melissa, and Linn at the conclusion of the workshop last Friday.  It was such a fun group and we all had a great time.  It's amazing to hear how my "story" of things not feeling right brought these 2 women to this workshop.  Enjoy!
