24 Mar 2022Fashion + Technology = The Future00:22:53

What is a fashion tech? A question that is often asked in and out of the fashion industry, and one that confuses many people. This first episode looks to define what is fashion tech and how it is currently transforming the fashion industry. Co-hosts Peter Jeun Ho Tsang and Von N. The episode unpacks fashion tech startups including AI trend forecasting platform T-Fashion, on-demand manufacturing platform LaunchMart, and digital fashion juggernauts The Fabricant and RTFKT. The conversation also draws upon Von’s experience with her current venture building, a fashion brand, and how in the future fashion designers may look towards embracing technology into the design process. 02 May 2022RoundRack on Pushing Material Innovation within Brands00:26:56

Material innovation is coming to a fore in recent years with new materials that are now ready to use in a variety of ways for fashion brands. Orange, cactus, spider silk, flowers and more are slowly being used in fashion products, but for many brands it can still be confusing on which fabric to use for which scenario. Not only are there the traditional fabric properties to consider, but now also the science behind it all. Choosing incorrectly can affect a product’s impact credentials, meaning potentially going against a brand’s sustainability values and intentions.

Enter RoundRack, a new platform that helps brand to manage material innovation projects. Co-founder Arie Katz chats with hosts Von Ruzive and Peter Jeun Ho Tsang on how he came up with the idea for the platform. Along with his co-founder Alessia Gotti, RoundRack is learning what is needed to make the startup successful, from keeping the product simple through to how to speak to the technophobe fashion industry. This episode we hear about Arie’s founder journey so far and his tips for other fashion tech founders.

10 May 2022LaunchMart: Can Anyone Now Become A Fashion Designer?00:27:40

Once upon a time, finding the right fashion suppliers & manufacturers for small clothing brands was really difficult. Thankfully, startups such as LaunchMart (one of our portfolio startups) is revolutionising this with their 'Canva for clothing' platform. It is now easier, more than ever, to manufacture clothing using online platforms such as these with just a few clicks of a button, selection of templates and access to the right suppliers.

Peter Jeun Ho Tsang hosts this episode to discuss this very topic with the founders of LaunchMart, Ruby Le Hong Ngoc & Tan Nguyen. The discussion covers the challenges that small clothing brands usually face such as the inability to put design sketches onto paper, how their platform makes the design & production process much simpler and how this creates a wider opportunity for more designers to emerge.

12 Jul 2022Bethany Greer: Fundraising As A Fashion Tech Founder In 202200:29:36

Investors are tightening up after the market crash this year, they are now more careful than ever to back companies that they truly believe in. It is exciting to see that new investors are popping up around the world, but also that large institutions have faith in fashion tech. Big institutions like Goldman Sachs, are able to bring in more institutional investors and guide them through the process of selecting which companies to invest in. That being said, how do startup founders stand out? How do they find the right investors and secure investment? Our co-hosts, Peter Jeun Ho Tsang and Von N. Ruzive, joined by special guest, Bethany Greer, answer these questions and more in this podcast episode!

In this episode we highlight these tips about what founders need to do to get their startup fundraising done, as well as others. Before founders begin to fundraise, they need to have a roadmap for how they plan to allocate their money, and be strategic with it. Furthermore, this means it will also be necessary for founders to start penny-pitching and lean on their fellow-founders for advice and empathy. Thirdly, founders need to search for investors with portfolios in which they will fit. They need to ask themselves, “do I see myself fitting in here?”

Our special guest, Bethany, worked at the Centre for Fashion Enterprise in London, supporting retail and sustainability tech startups to secure investment and scale their businesses. She is now a Venture Partner at Bethnal Green Ventures, backing and supporting early-stage tech for good fund companies like Nuw and Birdsong. We are so happy that she joined us for this podcast episode and hope you are intrigued by her thoughts on investments, fashion tech, and her advice for founders!

An umbrella term that can be applied to any part of the fashion value chain from designing in AI to virtual fittings in AR. As the fashion industry has only just dipped its toes in this, many are left wondering exactly how it can be applied to fashion across the whole value chain from pre-production to retail. 13 Sep 2022Connor Hill: The Truth About Fashion Becoming "Circular"00:33:21

Circularity & sustainability are currently hot topics in the fashion Industry. On one side there are many brands greenwashing (in other words lying about how sustainable they really are), while others are showing genuine circularity with wardrobe rentals/second hand marketplaces that are now largely recognised such as Vestiaire Collective. Demonstrating genuine ethical & sustainable practices has also extended to the startup world where small businesses are forming solutions that help larger brands improve their carbon footprint.

Initiatives such as dragons den-like opportunities for startups are interested in making such brands more sustainable. Connor Hill takes us through how startups have helped to change the sustainable scene in the industry and how you could get involved! With his background in circularity and brand strategy roles at John Lewis, Adidas & Marks & Spencer, you will gain insights on how things are currently looking and where they are heading for the future of the planet while not forgetting the importance of innovation in the mix.

06 Oct 2022Is There A Place For Tech At Fashion Weeks?00:32:05

Fashion weeks have been consistent ever since they began - official calendar, celebrities filling the front rows, the runway etc. COVID shouldn't be the only reason for switching this routine into something more exciting and innovative - the discovery of tech in fashion should be the new drive towards this.

With the SS23 fashion weeks just rounded up we reflect on what has been going on (or hasn't) when considering the implementations of tech.  From Coperni's spray-on dress with model Bella Haddid to Tommy Factory's involvement in metaverse, we are starting to see some fashion week tech action. Hosted by CEO & Founder, Peter Jeun Ho Tsang, & Ecosystem & Partnerships Senior Associate, Von N. Ruzive, this episode explores the 4 main fashion capitals to understand the different ways tech has been applied to revolutionise what we know as the typical fashion weeks.

10 Nov 2022Fashion Supply Chain: How to Get Investment w/ Lisa Morales-Hellebo00:30:51

The fashion value chain is a long line of multiple roles, resources, and most of the time, many countries in just one brand alone. So, imagine all of the complexities involved from lack of traceability to generals operations. Fashion, usually being one of the industries being least taken seriously for investment, it can be quite frustrating when trying to fundraise for parts of the supply chain.

In this episode we speak to Lisa Morales-Hellebo who has worn many hats from both sides of the coin as a VC as well as a Founder at REFASHIOND. She gives tips on how to look for funding as part of the fashion supply chain and some of the startups she has been working with.

30 Nov 2022FINDS: Solving Upcycling & their Techstars Journey00:26:52

As we’ve mentioned many times on this podcast, fashion has a sustainability problem. This is not a new thing as you are all aware but in many ways, circularity is part of this problem and is now being more explored by fashion brands.

When we say this, we mean some brands in particular who are actively looking for circular fashion solutions such as the automated upcycling platform being developed by one of our startups at our venture studio, FINDS.

FINDS, is a B2B 1 stop shop for unsold inventory meaning, they take action on deadstock from brands to give the items a new life. We speak with the founder, Andrea Herget, about what circularity really means and its potential in the future.

02 Mar 2023How Genuine Are Fashion Brands When Using Tech?00:21:49

We have previously discussed in other episodes the different uses of tech in the fashion industry from NFTs to fitting solutions. Now what does all of this mean for brands or better yet, why might brands actually even consider implementing these technologies into their business models? Are they genuinely wanting to improve the way that they do business or are they simply being what we call “fluffy”? Fluffy being the defined as 'a brand using tech without real substance or a deeper meaning'.

Peter and I discuss the different reasons why this may be prominent in the industry and tips at the end to help you avoid joining the bandwagon with more thought when considering tech innovation and tech adoption.

07 Nov 2023Founder Series: USA & Fashion's Aftercare Opportunity with Chelsea van de Kamp00:31:40

Everything Repair and Care

Chelsea’s favourite wardrobe pieces evoking nostalgia is what sparked her interest in prolonging the life of her fashion products. But the USA's underdeveloped repair and care market seems to be still in the stone ages, causing multiple friction points for the everyday American consumer. Chelsea wanted to find out why this is. We'll be analyzing the demographic trends that are causing this uprising, especially among Generation Z, the problem with 'mom & pop' stores, and numerous concrete examples of brands that are leading the "repair revolution", an increasingly important aspect of our clothing consumption.

The USA's Aftercare Opportunity

The golden state of California (Chelsea's home and the subject of the research) offers a fascinating case study in how lifestyle can be fused into a desired aesthetic, opening a vista for businesses willing to adopt an aftercare model. We dissect the critical role of garment repair services in reducing environmental harm and maximizing our apparel value, and why there are high rejection rates of clothing items from resale platforms. Finally, we ponder on how the unification of various tech platforms can build a more sustainable fashion future.

Those dreams developed into the desire to do something for the world and in this case fashion, having been shocked by the industry's wasteful nature. Pauline and her team have invented a novel process that utilises a combination of mechanical and chemical recycling processes to break down used garments into reusable fibres. Pauline shares in this episode how that magic happens and the drastic shift it could enact for fashion to become circular.

The Industry's Appetite for Recycled Fashion:
This episode peels back the layers of the glamorous facade to expose the urgent need for a circular economy in fashion. Alarmingly in this conversation Pauline tells host, Peter Jeun Ho Tsang, how the larger fashion players are just not biting and the truth about VC investors still prioritising short term returns over long term humanity's need for advancement. What will these commercial and market challenges mean for circular solutions like Refact?

07 May 2024Applied Series: It is Possible to Turn Waste into Fabric with AltMat's Shikha Shah00:39:15

Why Agricultural Waste?
Shikha Shah, with her rare blend of scientific expertise and compassionate leadership, tells us her transition from consultancy to building biorefineries to turn plant waste into textiles usable for the fashion and beyond. Coming to the realisation that if there's enough food in the world, then there's also enough waste in the world that can be reusable in some way. For Shikha after several years of research cracked the scientific formula that enables plant matter to be broken down and then transformed into fibre like structures.

Biorefineries, Material Innovations, and Patience
However, science is not enough and it's about understanding the perseverance, patience, and funding required to navigate the complex fashion supply chain and material innovation landscape.  Deploying biorefineries takes time and a lot of money. The keyword here is patience, and Shikha pulls apart what fashion brands must be doing in order to support material innovators in the longer term.  Beyond commercial issues, Shikha is integrating integrating kindness into the core of business, a principle that she believes is especially transformative for fashion tech entrepreneurship.

As we close out 2024, this year's final episode is joined by Yoobin Jung, a VC at Plug and Play, where she along with our host Peter break down the fashion tech booms and busts that happened throughout the year. They discuss:

• AI's transformative impact on fashion design: Generative design tools are accelerating prototyping and reshaping brand identities, but raise ethical concerns about potentially replacing junior designers.

• The sustainability challenge: AI could help align production with demand, potentially addressing the persistent issue of overproduction in the fashion industry.

• Luxury brands and AI adoption: High-end fashion houses are cautiously approaching AI, grappling with complexities of clothing structures and concerns about AI-driven overconsumption.

• Recommendation algorithms: Effectiveness varies between Europe and South Korea, prompting questions about enhancing consumer experiences versus fuelling overconsumption.

• Regulatory landscape: EU policies like Extended Producer Responsibility aim to promote circularity, yet industry readiness is questionable, as evidenced by Renewcell's bankruptcy.

• Future of luxury e-commerce: The resale market is gaining prominence, with potential lessons from South Korea's Kakao platform on integrating digital and physical retail experiences.
