15 Sep 2024I Tend to Think Negatively and Worry A Lot00:17:28

🔹Ven.Pomnyun's Dharma Q&A

Ven. Pomnyun's Answer to " I Tend to Think Negatively and Worry A Lot"

Selection from a Dharma Q&A session

🔹Question:

As a practitioner, what efforts should I make after having self-awareness in order to reach nirvana?

For example, I tend to think negatively and worry a lot.

Those worries sometimes are overwhelming. When my parents in Korea don't pick up my calls, I worry that they might be in a car accident or they passed out and they can't answer my call.

My sister-in-law is having a baby soon. And sometimes I become anxious thinking something bad might happen to her and the baby.

When I realize this ungrounded worry, I transition that worry into a sincere wish that everything goes well and that makes me feel calmer and relieved.

Also, worries and heaviness I feel about one task evokes my habit of worrying about all the things on my to-do list and they all suddenly come to me like a giant wave, making me feel overwhelmed and helpless.

When I become aware of the state, I shift my focus to a different thing or leave my desk and computer and watch YouTube clips that make me laugh.

I also tell myself to tackle the tasks one at a time and doing so makes me feel relieved and calmer.

Am I on the right track?

#worry #anxiety

15 Sep 2024How To Deal With Lockdown Symptoms00:38:01

🔹Ven.Pomnyun's Dharma Q&A

Ven. Pomnyun's Answer to “How To Deal With Lockdown Symptoms” Selection from Casual Conversation with Ven. Pomnyun Sunim (August 14, 2021) 🔹Question: I’m a city dweller in Sydney suffering from lockdown in the Covid. In the city there’s a lockdown now, we’ve been in lockdown for about 10-12 weeks and sometimes it’s really difficult. I suffer from stress or increased sensitivity for clutter, noise and I get more anxious, just high stress level. Sometimes I notice that going outside for running, exercise and that works but it’s not always possible, and I live in a small space with my partner and I don’t have any doubts about our love for each other but sometimes it can get a little bit tense and sometimes I don’t know how to deal with that. So my question is how to deal with lockdown symptoms, let’s say, when you’re confined in a small space. #Lockdown_Symptoms 🔻Jungto Dharma School (Introduction to Buddhism): https://www.jungtosociety.org/jungto-... 🔻 Find more at the following links: http://www.jungtosociety.orghttp://www.pomnyun.com  / jungto.society     / ven.pomnyun.sunim     / pomnyundailyquote   https://insighttimer.com/jungtokorea 🔻 All Jungto Society’s social platforms: http://linktr.ee/jungtoint

08 Nov 2024I Am Being Too Judgmental!00:10:36

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma  Q&A

“I am being too judgmental” Selection from Casual Conversation with Ven. Pomnyun Sunim (November 14, 2020)

🔹Question:   Hello Sunim, I've just graduated from something equivalent to Korean Middle School and will be going to high school soon. Today, my worry is about how I can be less judgmental and become more understanding to others. I think I tend to be quite judgmental when it comes to making friends and during this process, I tend to lose a lot of good friends. I tend to make a judgment too fast and I think I know everything about that person before I really make friends with that person. Maybe this is because of social media. So how can I stop being so judgmental and be more open to making new friends? I know I will benefit a lot from it. #Judgmental #makingfriends

07 Feb 2025Can I Be Happy While Being Aware? 00:22:07

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A

2019. 12. 24.

🔹Question : I’ve always been a curious person ever since I was a little boy. For example, when there was an ant’s nest, I would watch to see where the ants are going, where they’re getting their food and the trails they make. Now in English speaking cultures, there’s a saying ignorance is bliss. Actually I’ve found curiosity to be one of the more positive factors in my life. It doesn’t seem like ignorance is bliss, is one of the approaches of the Jungto Society. For example, I’ve seen you give talks with a podium like this where it says Happiness school in Korean, and then later on we see a video about some three minute clip or so about some starving children in North Korea or a bird dying full of plastic. So is it possible for me to become happy without losing the awareness of those things that are happening in the world?OK. (Laughs) It’s something that I hope is true, but I don’t know if I can have blind faith that it is true.

04 Feb 2025I Want to Help Others Become Happy00:20:37

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A

2023. 8. 5

🔹Question : I have a goal of impacting the world on a global scale which has involved several reliminary teps including becoming a positive influence for everyone I meet and encounter. I found that impacting veryone around me has been necessary for my own growth because the people I interact with can influence me as well. I have successfully motivated many people to live prosperous, fulfilling lives. But I have encountered many disconnected people either under trauma or suffering from depression or doubt. They reject the most basic lessons of creating inner happiness and fulfillment. And I believe that they don't mean to do this but instead, I believe that they do this because of loss of identity and they believe that they don't deserve to be happy. So, here's my question. How can one start to believe in their own happiness, believe they deserve it and obtain the courage and knowledge to start growing happiness and compassion for oneself when their life views have become badly misshapen by trauma, self doubt, or depression. I know that working towards something in this magnitude is one of the hardest things that one can do. And I want to help others achieve this substantial goal, people who have been lost and forgotten about. Thank you very much.

" Why Do We Get Bored of Things?” Selection from a Dharma Q&A session at Jogye-sa Temple, Seoul, South Korea (June 15, 2018)

🔹Question:   I was wondering about why we get bored of things. I have smart phone, I bought it last year, but now I'm bored of it. I have a girlfriend now. But maybe in one year or maybe in three years, I will be bored and maybe move on. I just wanted to know, why humans always wait for something to happen, wait for something new to arrive? Why we cannot be satisfied with stability and just enjoy the things we have without having more?

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A 2024. 12. 2 🔹Question: Hello, Sunim. It's really nice meeting you in person. I have a question on my hand, but please bear with me looking through my question because I'm quite nervous. Currently, I'm between jobs and maintain a peaceful mindset despite life's uncertainty. While some people say that being desperate and driven is essential for getting a job or a goal, I also value my hard-earned peaceful life. But, at the same time, I recognize the need for balance and to avoid complacency. So, in this situation, how can I navigate this situation? I don't want to live a stressful life, but, at the same I don't want to live a complacent life. 🔻Jungto Dharma School (Introduction to Buddhism): https://www.jungtosociety.org/jungto-dharma-school-online-course/  🔻 Find more at the following links: http://www.jungtosociety.org http://www.pomnyun.com https://www.instagram.com/jungto.society/ https://www.instagram.com/ven.pomnyun.sunim/ https://www.facebook.com/pomnyundailyquote https://insighttimer.com/jungtokorea  🔻 All Jungto Society’s social platforms: http://linktr.ee/jungtoint

10 Sep 2024My Boss Is Asking For Too Much!00:11:46

#WorkStress #COVID19

Ven. Pomnyun's Answer to " How should I react to my boss who asks too much work during this pandemic period?"

Selection from Casual Conversation with Ven. Pomnyun Sunim (November 14, 2020)

Question: I’m a scientist, and scientists in the United States at least are expected to work long hours including weekends and holidays. Though this culture is very normal, but in this pandemic time, it’s very difficult to work these hours. Because we have to split up our time with our co-workers, because we cannot be too closed to each other. So the problem is that, it’s not just my boss but I have noticed this and other senior scientists as well, they want us to work like it's normal times. At least in our lab, we still have the same amount of meetings where we were expected to generate data and update our boss, but it’s not really possible to be as productive as before.

My question is how do you handle people who expect too much from you during this time?

14 Jan 2025How to Deal with the Relationship between My Girlfriend and My Parents?00:20:52

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A

2022. 3. 25.

🔹Question : I have a question about how to deal with the relationship between my girlfriend and my parents. Here’s the situation where I struggled a lot. So my personality is a bit introverted and independent and my parents, they also don’t express their care a lot. But I can feel, I know they care about me, they love me. But sometimes my girlfriend will be mad at me because of how my parents treat me. Because sometimes how my parents behave, from my girlfriend’s perspective it’s like ignoring me. So I understand both sides, they both love me. But whenever I hear complaints from my girlfriend talking about my parents, I understand her points but I just don’t really feel comfortable because I can’t change my parents. They have their own stereotype and their own personality. So I’m trying to find a balance in myself because I love and appreciate both of them. Yeah that’s my question.

14 Feb 2025The Balance Between Our Own Happiness And Other People’s Happiness 00:05:11

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A

Ven. Pomnyun's Answer to " The Balance Between Our Own Happiness And Other People’s Happiness” Selection from a Dharma Q&A session at Google (Nov. 10, 2014)

🔹Question : I’m not sure if you are suggesting that appiness is sort of the state that we should ideally be seeking. But if it is, I think to the people that I know who are the happiest and they are actually the people that are most selfish. And I observe that they’re very happy because they spend, you know, all of our time and energy are limited. And they spend their time and energy on their own goals and their own interests. And they don’t really help others. And that doesn’t seem to be the ideal way of living. The ideal way of living seems to be some balance between seeking your own happiness and also seeking others’ happiness. On the other end of the spectrum, I see other people who are very selfless and help a lot of people selflessly. But actually because ey’re so neglectful their own needs they are unhappy. So it seems like we need some sort of balance, right? How would you suggest striking an appropriate balance between addressing other people’s needs increasing other people’s happiness, and our own happiness?

🔹Question : I have a hard time trusting in relationships, especially, in romantic relationships. I have a hard time trusting men because my dad had affairs growing up when I was a child. So, I became pretty certain that I don't want to get married because I subconsciously think that marriage is the path to misery. But because I'm human, I still want to date and be in love. But whenever I get into relationships, I find that I get very anxious and worried about if I could trust this person. Instead of enjoying and feeling like I'm in love, I just feel more anxious. I think it comes from wanting to protect myself. I don't want to get hurt for any reason. But I don't know if I can truly open up and just enjoy relationships instead of always feeling on edge or anxious. That's my question.

15 Sep 2024 I Am Having a Hard Time Finding a Job00:21:57

🔹Ven.Pomnyun's Dharma Q&A

Ven. Pomnyun's Answer to " I Am Having a Hard Time Finding a Job"

Selection from a Dharma Q&A session Apr. 2. 2023

🔹Question: My question is related to a job search.

I'm currently in Italy living with my family.

After reflecting, I've made the decision to go back to Canada,in the next few months,to look for a job.

I talked to my friends, and they told me it'd be better for me to be there and easier because it's hard here.

My friends are willing to support me.They said I can stay with them until I find a job.

But I get confused because, so far, I haven't been successful in getting a job. I've been applying again and again, but it doesn't work out.

I've been just getting rejections. So, I have these thoughts. Sometimes, I'm getting anxious by thinking, "When I move to Canada, what if things don't work out the way I want?"

Since the future is uncertain, how can I deal with this confusion?

And how can I have the faith that everything will work out,

even if I have to wait for a few months?

But I keep thinking,

"What if I will find the right people?

What if I don't find the right people?"

So, how can I deal with this confusion

in my mind?

29 Oct 2024I Don't Feel Like Doing Anything00:10:22

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A

Selection from Casual Conversation with Ven. Pomnyun Sunim

#Freedom #Five precepts

🔹Question:   I'd always been driven by these big ideas, passion, all these abstract thoughts, goals, dreams and things like that. But a few months ago, I had been sick for a couple of months with COVID. I initially thought it'd be just like any other cold, but it put me in a really big depressive spiral. I couldn't do much, I was just home just lying down. It was not because of physical sickness. Mentally I didn't want to do anything. Now, I think I'm fully recovered. But I find myself not caring about any of the things that used to drive me, like all these goals, missions, visions, and thoughts. Even though I'm fully recovered now, I just feel super lazy about everything and anything and I don't care about much. I've been going to work. I have a habit of going to work. So, I still go to work, but I don't care about work anymore.I don't care about my performance or doing well, I just do the minimal amount that I need to put in, and I just come home. The same applies to everything. Maybe this is the new normal, the old me will come back. But it's been like this for a while, and it's a very new thing for me. I just feel like I don't want to do much. So, what I wanted to check with you is, "What's my next step here?" Do I just get up in the morning and try to do my 108 bows diligently, and call that good? Or is there something else that I need to be looking out for?

19 Nov 2024How can I help people suffering from materialism? 00:12:53

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A

Selection from a Dharma Q&A session at Southdale Library, Minneapolis, Minnesota (Sep 12, 2018)

🔹Question:  I have studied a lot of different philosophical spiritual practices and religions. I come to the conclusion that a lot of our sufferings are from fixation on materialism from my understanding. Attachment to things, attachment to homes, attachment to people, attachment to money. At an early age I realized there was more to this world than what you can feel, the tangible, the material. I always thought I was a seeker of something beyond the material world. When I see people suffering because of materialism, I don’t know how to help them. I don’t know how to help them in their suffering of attachment and seeking materialism, money, greed. I see it in my way coming and I see them suffering because of it. It;e not to say that you don’t need money or things. Obviously everyone needs money and things. That’s not point. I am just wondering how one deals with being surrounded by people that you see them suffering and they cause suffering to others with their attachment to things, money, materialism and creating suffering in the process of that.

10 Sep 2024I Get Super Nervous to Speak in Front of People00:20:00

(Questioner) Hello, Sunim,

It’s great to meet you today.

I am currently a JTS volunteer, and I am attending meetings and some classes. I am also a facilitator for the English Jungto Dharma School.

As I attend meetings and classes, I’ve realized that I have difficulty expressing myself and communicating clearly with others. Especially, my voice tends to be very soft whenever I speak. In the future, I may need to lead groups and participate in many meetings. I am super nervous about speaking in front of people. I want to overcome this weakness and would greatly appreciate your advice.

In the past, I thought my problem was caused by my father, who yelled at me and raised me very strictly when I was young. Because of this, I used to blame him. However, I now realize that this is my problem, and I need to overcome it myself.

Even now, I feel so nervous that it feels like my heart will burst. I would like to hear your advice.

I want to live my life with a lighter and more positive attitude, both in my work and in society. I want to contribute positively to others.

Thank you, Sunim.

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s DharmaQ&A

Selection from Casual Conversation with Ven. Pomnyun Sunim (A ugust 7, 2021)

#HumanRelationship #Emotional_Independence #MulticulturalSociety

🔹Question: My question today is about friendships or human relationships in general. As I get older, I don’t get to have the type of friendships that I used to have as a child. I understand that friends have their own lives and to respect our differences I always have to set boundaries. And sometimes I find it exhausting just to maintain this level of emotional independence if you will. Is this because of not trusting people enough or my expectations of friendships are too high or I just haven’t accepted the way life is.

22 Oct 2024Using the Squirrel Analogy to Convey the Buddha's Teachings00:18:21

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A

Selection from Casual Conversation with Ven. Pomnyun Sunim  (2022.9.17)

#understanding #nature #mental process #respect

🔹Question:

I wasn't expecting to ask you a question, so I need to remember what I submitted.

The point of the question is that I wanted to revisit the topic of nature with you.

Last time, I tried, but I wanted to come back

because I don't think my question was fully answered.

I think Sunim really refers to nature as the golden standard

when it comes to deciding what we should do.

To my knowledge, the inspiration is drawn from the precepts.

An example is when Sunim describes the story of the squirrel.

When you compare us to squirrels and say that the squirrels live

lighter lives and happier lives than we do.

I think some people, especially the younger ones

and the people in Western cultures, tend to disagree with that analogy.

For example, my wife says, "How do we know if squirrels actually live happier lives?

What if they're always paranoid that something's going to swoop down

from above and eat them?"

When people disagree with this view of nature,

how should we approach them when it comes to explaining the precepts

and this framework to decide what's good and what's bad?

🔹Question: I'm an Australian university student and I come to Korea to see my parents because they moved here two years ago, after every semester. So I've lived in Australia since age one until now and I study there. The issue that I'm facing is that I love Australia, but I keep feeling that I am less Australian now compared to my peers and my friends. Because my new home is in Korea now. And after I catch a plane to go home and everyone else lives down the road. I am facing a bit of an identity problem because of that as well. So I don’t know how I should deal with that.

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A

Selection from a Dharma Q&A session at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sunnyvale, California (Nov. 8, 2014)

🔹Question: As we live, we encounter problems such as love and betrayal. We encounter people that betray you like friends, business partners or even your loved ones. For me, it's very hard to forgive regardless of what happened. A lot of my friends tell me that I should for give the person regardless of what happened. I think betrayal is worse than getting love because betrayal means that you were being loved and thrown back. I tried to understand that we should forgive. But, then am I wrong? Animals don't forgive each other. Animals attack back if they were being betrayed. Am I wrong if I have no feeling, if I have no reason to forgive the person back?

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A

Selection from a Dharma Q & A at Harvard University Sep. 20, 2017

🔹Question:
I am a third year undergraduate. This is my first year back after serving two years in the Korean military. I thought, after two years hiatus, I'd be older and wiser. I was in a situation where I didn't have any phone, I didn't have any alcohol. I was surrounded by a bunch of guys all the time. So at night, I would always dream of coming back to school How amazing it would be. I was always unhappy because I had all these desires and yearnings not only about academia but about all the other freedom I would have outside. Now that I am here, I get way too many emails, I have way too many assignments, I am always too stressed. It is the classic problem of grass is greener on the other side. I am really trying hard every day to think it is still better than being in the army. It is still better than unclogging toilets and doing the dishes every day. But I feel like I am still swayed so much by this eternal struggle of finding happiness from where I am. So I was wondering if maybe I am doing something wrong, I am trying to brainwash myself thinking this is good this is better than what I had before or if there is another way to do it.

Ven. Pomnyun's Answer to “How to deal with my anxiety about evaluation pressure at work?"

Selection from Casual Conversation with Ven. Pomnyun Sunim (November 7, 2021)

I love my job and luckily my coworkers are very supportive.

But my job requires me to prove my ability through various evaluation systems all the time.

While I try not to be bothered by the pressure too much, I often feel anxious and worried.

I talk to myself like it’s okay if I would end up quitting the job, I just should do what I can do, but still sometimes the effort doesn’t work well.

I’d really appreciate it if you could advise me on how to deal with my anxiety wisely.

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A

Selection from a Dharma Q&A session at Harvard University (Sep. 20, 2017)

🔹Question : My question is about relationships. With people in our lives, there can be people who are very, for the lack of a better word, toxic. Sometimes we just give up, try to forgive them. At that point, we don’t hate them anymore. We don’t dislike them anymore. We just leave them out of our lives. I was wondering how you would feel about that? Would you insist that we try to remediate that relationship? Or do you feel that just leaving them out of our lives, letting them lead their own lives apart from yours, is that okay?

It has happened repeatedly. And when we have a baking class, she doesn't clean the kitchen area, so I have to clean the kitchen and take out the trash. I want to do my best with the residents. I want to make them happy, and I want to dedicate my time to work. I don't want to quit. So, am I being negative in taking issue with how my coworker behaves? How can I make my mind peaceful?"

27 Sep 2024Can We Live Only with Love without Darkness? 00:19:01

🔹Ven.Pomnyun's Dharma Q&A Selection from a Dharma Q&A session at Busan City Hall, Busan (June 15, 2019)

🔹Question: my question is, Mister, what do you think about Yin Yang philosophy as there is a day and night, there is love and hate, and the complete contrary is the utopia. What do you think is the possibility to live only or if there is a possibility to live only with love as according to Buddha’s teaching? If we look at love or let’s say light is just non-presence of darkness, so if it’s possible actually, if in this world we can live only with love, except [for] the night. If there is a possibility that we can live without the dark side, let’s say. Because I believe each person has their own dark side and we need this dark side to be here, to appreciate the good things that happen in our lives. So I would define the love as the bright side. Thank you for answering. I really appreciate it. So I would just say that Majjhimāpaṭipadā, the middle way. It’s the coexistence, as you said, of all the religions, all types of religions they coexist, all Buddhist systems. So I think as well the light and darkness as well the love and hate, as long as there is the middle way there is the coexistence. This is the most important thing. Thank you.

10 Sep 2024I Get Frustrated When My Boss Assigns More Work to Me00:22:06

Ven. Pomnyun's Answer to “I Get Frustrated When My Boss Assigns More Work to Me”

Selection from Casual Conversation with Ven. Pomnyun Sunim (June 13, 2021)

Question : I get frustrated and angry when my boss assigns more work to me. I notice that I get frustrated because I don't really care for my boss nor my work, and also because I don't like to stay late doing more work. Working late would be great if I get properly compensated for the overtime, but this is not the case since I'm salaried. I recognize in order to make a living I'll need to kiss up and accept this extra work assigned, even if I don't feel like it. I've been trying to look at my situation more optimistic, like writing down the pros of keeping this job. But this goes down the toilet as soon as my boss gives me more work and I tend to step back at my boss. So my question is how can I practically change my perspective so that I won't get mad at my boss when he gives me more work.

10 Jan 2025How Can I Love and Care for People?00:06:08

🔹Ven Pomnyun’s Dharma Q&A 2024. 7. 15.

🔹Question:  (Questioner) Hello, I just have a quick question. You talked about the climate change and that people need to change. For me, it seems clear that people should or even must love and care about each other. But, at the same time, it's painfully clear that we don't. I have some personal experience that I was engaged in some activism.

My experience made me very cynical about even what humans are and what we deserve. Maybe it's wrong for me to want to love people or want people to care about each other.

I was wondering what's your take on it, given that you are trying to help people. I'm sure you have seen a lot of people not helping others.
