Phoenix is widely known for his ‘Retro slide shows' featuring a collection of vintage film slides capturing mid-century American life and culture -- set to Phoenix's commentary. He's known also for his "test kitchen" creations of exaggerated novelty foods and desserts, including the Cherpumple, a three-layer cake/pie hybrid. What happened to radio? Adam welcomes San Francisco sports talk icon Damon Bruce to chat about how listening habits and the medium itself have changed. While radio proves to be an ecology in decline, podcasting is growing, and as the facts below reflect, the culture is quickly changing. Follow along with Damon Bruce HERE Between 2014 and 2023, podcasting has seen a significant increase in popularity, growing from 13% of time spent with spoken word audio to 36% during that period. In comparison, AM/FM radio decreased in popularity over the same period, going down from 78% to 44%. The report also shows that podcasts are most commonly listened to at work and at home while AM/FM’s last hold is still in-car listening. "Podcasting now accounts for over one-third of the time spent with spoken word audio,” said Edison Research vice president Megan Lazovick. “The cultural shift to digital certainly benefits this space, or perhaps, it's vice versa - the growing enthusiasm for podcasting is shifting the culture digital. Either way - podcast listening continues to grow.” 81% of Gen Z respondents believe that a universal monoculture where people are unified by certain time-based events, like traditional morning radio shows, no longer exists. We chat with Alexandra Chamberlain of Tolosa Children’s Dental Center (TCDC). They are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that opened in 2003. In the first year, 500 children were treated, and now averaging over 5,000 children annually. TCDC offers comprehensive quality pediatric dental services including preventive, oral health education, restorative, and emergency treatment. Tooth decay is a significant problem in children and even more so in underserved populations. Untreated cavities lead to pain, infection, and tooth loss and can affect eating and sleeping, resulting in missed school, lower self-esteem, and negatively impacting relationship building and future employment opportunities. TCDC has become a trusted dental center for underserved children throughout San Luis Obispo County. Without TCDC, most of these children would not receive oral health care. They have flowers donated to them by Dummen from the Dummen Orange Flower Show that are left to sell for this great cause. As odd as it sounds, there are some experts with some like minded opinions like this NYT article ‘An Unlikely Way to Save a Species: Serve It for Dinner’ HERE Chef Aiden prepares Snowy Plovers he harvested from Point Reyes, Ca. Fried Snowy Plovers With Truffles Place four plovers in a saucepan after cleaning, drawing and trussing them, and add five ounces of butter, a couple of cloves, and a few raw truffles cut into slices, with salt and pepper to taste. Place the pan over a brisk fire and cook for about ten minutes or so, then add two tablespoonfuls of flour and a wineglassful of Talley Chardonnay to a half pint of the stock; pour it into a saucepan, place it over a fire and cook gently for twenty minutes, stirring frequently. When done, arrange the birds on a dish, add the juice of one lemon to the stock, boil again for a few minutes, and pour it over the plovers, and they are ready for serving.
