04 Apr 2021 | 69: The root of suffering is within your thoughts with Byron Katie | 00:27:49
I am over the moon to be joined by Byron Katie, the founder of The Work which teaches people how to end their own suffering. She is someone whose work I’ve been following since I was 16 and when you begin to watch her talks, read her books and listen to the stories of millions of people who she has helped to challenge their thoughts, I’m sure you’ll be in just as much awe as I am. In 1986, Byron Katie’s life changed forever. She was 43 and had been suffering from an eating disorder and suicidal depression for years, until one day the discovery of questions ultimately led her to freedom and peace. She went on to create The Work, which is a process of inquiry that allows anyone to do the same by asking themselves four key questions: Is it true? Can you absolutely know it’s true? How do I react in that situation, what happens when you believe that thought? Who would you be without that thought? In this episode, we discuss why suffering is optional, how freedom is our true nature and how by isolating just one thought, you can find a place of truth and joy. We discuss how this simple yet powerful process of inquiry can allow us to step into a new reality that exists beyond suffering and ultimately set us free. Find out more about Byron Katie here: Website: https://thework.com/ Instagram: @byron.katie This week's episode is in partnership with Erno Laszlo. 18 Jul 2021 | 82: How we can save our world with Mo Gawdat | 00:31:16
Today’s interview is with a pioneering thinker who is on a huge mission to make 1 billion people happier. Mo Gawdat is the international bestselling author of the book, Solve for Happy and the host of the extremely popular podcast Slo Mo. Mo started his working life as an engineer and then took on the role of Chief Business Officer at Google X. I love the way Mo’s mind works because he marries the science and the logic with the spiritual. Mo does this excellently and with so much ease and harmony that after hearing him speak or reading his work, you leave with a sense of order and calm within. Mo’s latest book, Scary Smart, is another hit in the making. I’m not sure if you know much about artificial intelligence and the world of robots but this book explores what is waiting for us in the future. Mo explains its 100% fact that robots are in our future but explores how this will affect us, our mental health and the way we live. And asks the question - what can we do about it now? This book is a wake up call, a call to action, a mirror to the way we live now and an invitation to raise our game as humans to ensure that the AI algorithms that are learning from our behaviour start to prioritise kindness. So I hope you enjoy this insightful, fascinating conversation about robots, AI, our mental health, kindness, compassion and where our responsibility lies. 09 May 2021 | 74: How technology is affecting our brain health with Cal Newport | 00:41:55
Today’s guest is someone I wish I’d discovered years ago, Cal Newport. Cal is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University and the author of seven books. His New York bestseller, Deep Work, Digital Minimalism is what led him to write his latest book, A World Without Email. Can you imagine what our life would be like without emails? By 2019 the average person checks their emails 75 times a day and the average worker sends 126 emails per day - that is one every four minutes. Don’t be too alarmed though, Cal Newport is here to provide us with practical solutions for learning to live with email successfully rather than have it destroy our working patterns. In this episode, we talk about the destructive nature of social snacking and how unhealthy our digital habits have become. We discuss how it plays into our dopamine response and how it’s encouraging us to become addicted to tech. However, what Cal explains is that the issue is not the content itself but the way that we use tech as a distraction mechanism. The truth is that the more we rely on technology, the more it is affecting our brain health. However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Cal talks us through the ways in which we can be more disciplined with communication. He provides us with a number of practical solutions for tackling email exhaustion, email etiquette, how to improve processes that aid performance and how to inform others about your new way of managing email. It won’t come as a surprise that you won’t be able to find him on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram but you can visit his website calnewport.com and read some of his fantastic essays. What I loved more than anything was their positive attitude towards food and how it’s not about being perfect, it’s about doing your best. An attitude we should adopt with everything in life. 15 Nov 2020 | 52. How is cultural change affecting behaviour and our mental health with Dr Robert Gilman | 00:29:52
On today’s episode I am joined by the absolutely fascinating, Dr Robert Gilman. Dr Robert Gilman is an astrophysicist, sustainability pioneer and someone who most definitely qualifies as a cultural “change-agent”. He is now on a mission to help communities around the world understand cultural transitions and encourages everyone to embody practices that will lead to a humane and sustainable future. He discusses how this requires more understanding and talks about how we should all embody what he calls the 3 harmonies: - The harmony within ourselves - The harmony with others - The harmony with nature Robert’s passion for a sustainable world is also passed on through his course, Bright Future Now where he teaches his students how to put into practice these 3 harmonies and gain tools for the journey from the Empire Era into the Planetary Era (he explains these eras in the podcast). After speaking with Robert, I was blown away by his knowledge and his outlook on life and highly recommend you to go to his website (context.org) to find out more. This week my guest is someone who is totally extraordinary and her energy fills an entire space with such positivity and empowerment. Tai Beauchamp is a motivational speaker, media personality, meditation leader, writer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and soon to be author. In the past year she set up morning mindset with Tai and has thousands tuning in several times a week to upgrade their minds in the mornings and it is honestly so refreshing. Today we dive into her wisdom and Tai explains why a morning routine is so important. She discusses the tools you need to create a great morning and what thoughts to consciously bring into your mind. She explains that so many of us are jumping up into our day and not preparing our heart and spirit to expect, desire and design great things. She believes that the way you start and the way you begin is half the win. It's all about being in the right headspace to get what we want and clear as to what actions we want to take. 20 Jun 2021 | 80: The life-changing power of being kind to yourself with Kristin Neff | 00:43:13
Today’s guest is a huge inspiration of mine and her research has been incredibly influential for my work. I mention her throughout my book so to have Kristin Neff as a guest on the show is a true honour. Kristin Neff has pioneered the field of self-compassion research for almost 20 years. She has developed a training program called Mindful Self-Compassion and authored best-selling books such as Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself. Her work has changed millions of lives and has proven that being kind to ourselves can improve our health, relationships and set us up for a truly successful life. In today’s interview, we dive in to her latest book, Fierce Self-Compassion: How Women Can Harness Kindness to Speak Up, Claim Their Power, and Thrive and unlock Kirsten’s learnings around the power behind self-compassion. We talk about the benefits of self-compassion and how we need to develop both its fierce and tender side. We discuss how women have been discouraged from developing their fierceness as part of their true nature and how Kristin encourages women to reclaim the powerful side of kindness in order to find lasting happiness and bring about social change. I know it can be the hardest thing to be kind to ourselves, and we can get easily caught up in our inner critic telling us all the things we should be worried about but Kristin’s work shows us how dialling down that voice and turning up the volume of compassionate thoughts can be truly life-changing. It’s a skill we all need to learn and Kristin shows us how. 14 Jun 2020 | 32: How to let go of the past with mindset coach Polly Bateman | 00:40:21
On today's show, I interview Mindset & Performance Coach, Author and Thought Leader Polly Bateman. In today’s episode we are talking about how you can let go of the past, especially loosen the grip to all those "should of, would have, could have, if only..." thoughts. We are the sum of our past experiences but our future doesn’t need to be. I hope you enjoy todays chat, Polly has helped me along my journey and I hope she does the same for you. This interview was recorded before the protests and that is why they aren't mentioned, more interviews to come on that. I purposely had a break last week from uploading my show to honour the Black Lives Matter movement. I am committed to do all that I can do ensure we live in an anti-racist society. I am focusing my energies on looking at how I can make therapy more accessible to women of colour low socio-economic communities and pledge monthly to the LoveLand Foundation. Do check out and join me if possible: https://thelovelandfoundation.org Please find more information on Polly Bateman here: www.thepollybateman.com Please find Polly on instagram: @thepollybateman A little bit about the NOT PERFECT podcast. It is a total honour to have Ann Louise Gittleman on today’s show. Ann is a top nutritionist and author who is internationally recognised as a pioneer in dietary, longevity, environmental and women’s health issues. Ann was talking about wellbeing before anyone even knew what it meant and at the age of 70, she is still making waves in the health and wellness industry. Ann is an award-winning New York Times bestselling author of over 35 books and has recently added to her collection with her latest book, Radical Longevity. Her new book depicts a new view of ageing - one that defies conventional wisdom and redefines the ageing process with resilience, vitality and grace for cellular regeneration. The topic of ageing is important for every age as all of us should practicing healthy ageing habits and techniques to ensure we support our health for as long as possible. Ann does just that and this episode is brimming with information. We discuss why epigenetics are so important when thinking of the longevity of our health, how our body stores trauma and how our bodies are continuously being betrayed by the toxicity of our environment. Ann provides tips on how we can fortify the glands and ward off radiation with certain foods and supplements. While she’s extremely conscious of everything she consumes, she leads a very balanced diet and even encourages people to drink coffee (the purest kind) and indulge in a glass of wine or two! I am very happy to take that advice on board. Her book is eye-opening and while you may never look at foods in the same way, Ann is proof that her lifestyle will keep you young and healthy for a very long time! To celebrate National DNA day this week, today’s episode is all about DNA and genetics as I interview former Olympic medalist and founding team member of the award winning Circle DNA, Andrew Steele. Why should we test? What is DNA? Why does it matter? All these questions are answered. We discuss all things genetic, genome, epigenetics, nature nurture debate, personalized wellness and more. Andrew shares his story about why he moved away from professional sports to now pioneering at home DNA testing. 05 Sep 2021 | 84: Braincare: How to feed your brain and thrive with Dan Murray-Serter | 00:32:20
My guest this week is Dan Murray-Serter. Dan is a serial entrepreneur, the co-founder of a brain care company called Heights and the host of the UK’s number one business podcast, Secret Leaders. Dan’s journey actually began from his own struggles with mental health: trying to solve his chronic anxiety and six-month-long insomnia. He tried everything from self-medicating with alcohol, without alcohol, saw a therapist, a doctor but to no avail. But when a friend asked whether he had considered his brain’s nutrition as a cause, he decided to see a dietitian. He found out that he didn’t have key nutrients needed for his brain and she recommended high quality supplements. His sleep dramatically improved. Dan’s life is now focused on how he can improve brain care and he has created the ‘Smart Supplement’ to help others on the same journey and teach them about how to feed the brain for it to thrive. 12 Sep 2021 | 85: Learn how to disagree with Genelle Aldred | 00:35:28
I am joined today by a long term friend of mine, Genelle Aldred. Genelle is a former ITV and BBC journalist and the founder of communications consultancy GA\C. She is now a published author and has written a book we all need to read. It’s called Communicate for Change: Creating justice in a world of bias and it explores the missing nuisance to our conversation in the public arena at this moment in time. It’s a thought provoking book that unpacks the tribalism we see in our culture and presents a new way forward, a far more harmonious way, a way that appreciates all individuals and is a guide book to how we get there. If we want to make a positive difference, we have to know how to recognise our own biases and blind spots - only then can we understand how to be part of the solution and start having meaningful conversations. Genelle offers suggestions to help us be better listeners, readers, watchers and talkers. She breaks down the barriers to effective conversation so that we can disagree in a more nuanced and thoughtful way and stop singular narratives driving our conversation. This was such a fascinating conversation and I'm thrilled she's shone a light on a topic that is so relevant. I can't wait for you all to hear it! 26 Sep 2021 | 87: Redefining the meaning of love with Natasha Lunn | 00:43:21
In today’s podcast I am joined by Natasha Lunn, the features director at RED magazine and the creator of a popular and acclaimed email newsletter, Conversations on Love. Her first book, Conversations on Love, was published in July and went straight into the Sunday Times top ten bestseller list. Natasha Lunn’s work is some of the most important work being done and it is all centred around teaching us about LOVE. I opened her book and on the first page in black and white, Natasha explains that none of us talk about love and yet still expect to be an expert at it. I don’t think I realised how complicated my relationship with love had become over years of bruising and I’m sure many of you might relate. After years of feeling that love was always out of reach, journalist Natasha Lunn set out to understand how relationships work and evolve over a lifetime. She turned to authors and experts to learn about their experiences as well as drawing on her own asking: ‘How do we find love?’, ‘How do we survive when we lose it?’. It is an honour to have Natasha, the author of the Sunday Times bestselling book, Conversations on Love on today’s podcast. Dr Rosemary is the Chief Science Officer at Columbia Care and one of the most exciting global experts on the subject. It is a huge honour to welcome Dr Rosemary on the podcast to really look into the why’s, the what’s and the research behind CBD as we know it. Trust me, this episode is mind-blowing! Today I have Ian Washington-Smith on the podcast and wow are you guys in for an extra special episode! I recently spent a weekend with Ian who taught me some of the most mind-blowing lessons on mental health, beliefs and behaviour change and I can’t wait for you guys to get a taste of what I’ve been learning. Ian is one of the most fascinating people I’ve ever met, he’s a former police manager who ran operations and intelligence management, corruption, prevention and covert investigation. He then went on to found organisations such as the Thames Valley Black Police Association Cognitive Coaching and most recently Mindsmith Thinking. Ian supports individuals and organisations to change by adapting their thinking towards issues such as individual potential, people productivity, diversity and leadership. Through his work he is able to unlock inner gifts within people. Ian’s approach is profound, it’s different and it takes inspiration from so much of the history of psychology. It is some of the greatest teachings and I hope every single person can learn from someone like Ian. 21 Nov 2021 | 95: Love is not a shortcut to happiness with Monica Berg | 00:44:16
On today’s podcast I speak to the global, spiritual teacher Monica Berg who is the author of some of my favourite books including Fear is not an option and the book we are going to be speaking about today, Rethink Love. Throughout Monica’s work she shows individuals how to create a life in which they are living and loving as the most powerful and fulfilled person they’ve always wanted to be. Her books combine her many years of Kabbalistic study with her own personal life experiences. She battled and overcame a debilitating eating disorder at a young age and as a mother of four children, one of whom has special needs, she has become an outspoken advocate for him and others struggling to find their voice. Monica and her husband co-host The Spiritually Hungry podcast which is truly brilliant. She also serves as Chief Communications Officer of The Kabbalah Centre International. Monica’s book on love is a highlighter at the ready book. Love is something which is confusing me lately as I’m only just beginning to understand the full extent of what that word really means. It’s far from what Disney told me many years ago. It’s a true honour to have such a profound spiritual thought leader on the show today. 28 Nov 2021 | 96: The afterlife and why we will see loved ones again with Mariel Forde Clarke | 00:34:23
On today’s podcast we will be speaking about life after death with the most wonderful author, healer, counsellor and spiritual midwife, Mariel Forde Clarke. Mariel has dedicated much of her life to helping people rethink the end of life and supporting their transition from the physical to the non-physical. Mariel’s interest in the afterlife stemmed from her own near death experience when she was pronounced ‘dead’ on the operating table and that was when her perspective on life totally changed. In her book, Whereafter: Where do our loved ones go after they die?, Mariel weaves the science and the spiritual to create a beautiful, heavily researched book that soothes the soul by sharing a possibility of what happens after we depart from reality as we know it. Mariel was a self confessed sceptic before her own experience but now she is here to guide us and help thousands of people realise that when physical life ends, the love that was shared was eternal, and that love never dies. 30 Jan 2022 | REPLAY: The path to mental freedom with Peter Crone | 00:48:16
This is another one of my all time favourite interviews where I speak to writer and thought leader in human potential, Peter Crone, aka ‘The Mind Architect’. I’ve been following Peter’s work for the last few years and it has had a profound impact on me along with millions of people around the world. He has worked with world-famous actors, athletes and very successful businessmen, yet what he teaches resonates with every individual. There are very few people in life who are able to sum up seemingly complex ideas about what it means to be human and make all the anxieties we face sound simple. Peter Crone is one of them. In this episode, Peter explains his famous quote: ‘true happiness is the absence of the search for happiness’ and why being at peace with the worst case scenario means there is nothing left to fear. He goes on to explain how we can only be free when we are in complete harmony with our current circumstances. It's when we stop trying to figure everything out, that we will find freedom. The product Peter shares is freedom and though you might wonder how an earth someone can sell freedom, this interview will show you how. His philosophy is life-changing and this is such a powerful conversation which I hope will help every single one of you. For more on Peter Crone, be sure to follow him on Instagram @petercroneofficial and check out his website https://www.petercrone.com. This episode is supported by OTO CBD. 13 Feb 2022 | 101: How anxiety affects your sex life with Kate Moyle | 00:40:15
And just like that we're back and ready to take over your Sundays! I've been so excited to launch Season 10 - we've got some incredible guests lined up and it's going to be bigger and better than ever! And what a better way to start than with one of the UK’s leading psychosexual and relationship therapists, Kate Moyle. Sexual wellness is a topic that is slowly becoming more spoken about and with this new liberation spreading over the globe, I thought that there is no one better than Kate to talk to about this topic. A recent study found that nearly half of 25-34 year old woman complained of a lack of sexual enjoyment and another found that people in Britain were having less sex than they once did. These numbers do sound bleak but behind any problem there are always solutions and steps forward! The wonderful Kate works with anyone that is struggling with difficulties in their sex lives, particularly with people whose sexuality is impacted by the stresses of modern life. Kate helps thousands of people recognise their personal understanding of sexuality and sexual health and takes the view that all issues including sexual wellness have roots in psychology, emotion and a person’s history and culture. Ultimately Kate’s work is about helping people get to a place of sexual health, happiness and wellbeing. I don't hold back in this episode so it's definitely worth a listen! 20 Apr 2022 | Wisdom Wednesday with Matt Rudd on male mental health | 00:32:13
Matt Rudd is my guest on today’s Wisdom Wednesday and I’m so thrilled to have him. After reading his book, Man Down, I’ve been left pondering lots ever since. The book combines research with Matt’s own personal exploration about why mental health in men is so troubled and what are possible solutions. Matt is a Senior Writer on The Sunday Times, he’s an award-winning columnist and currently writes the column Man Trouble in The Sunday Times Magazine. He’s written three novels and two non-fiction books including Man Down which explores male mental health. The reason why this topic is so important to me is because I grew up understanding that men struggle with mental health just as much as women as my father went through many periods of chronic anxiety, depression and even now it can be a daily challenge to manage. Matt is on a mission to create emotional equality and I couldn’t be more supportive. He’s passionate about creating a culture that allows all humans to process their emotions, regardless of what they look like or identify as. 24 Apr 2022 | 111: The path to abundance with Deepak Chopra | 00:47:21
Today’s podcast is with someone I admire so greatly. It is but a dream come true to have Deepak Chopra on the Not Perfect Podcast. The first book I read of Deepak Chopra’s was The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success in my early 20s and it was truly life changing. Deepak Chopra is a complete legend, he’s the author of more than ninety books translated into forty-three languages. He has changed the lives of millions of people through his literary work, his speeches, his app, his meditations, The Chopra Foundation and many more outlets. He has led the forefront of the health and wellbeing and consciousness movement. TIME Magazine described him as one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century. His latest book, Abundance, is truly brilliant. It was like a bath for my soul and mind. I genuinely finished the book feeling so much more abundant than when I started and the change happened just through the process of reading this book. The subject of money and spirituality is a tricky one to navigate but this book clarifies the true meaning of money, desire and what it means to live abundantly and how to start thriving in every area of your life. 17 Jul 2022 | 119: A new approach to managing anxiety with Dr Ellen Vora | 00:48:37
A huge thank you to our podcast sponsor FOREO who have partnered with Current Body, the beauty device experts, to offer Not Perfect listeners an exclusive 20% off all FOREO products for the month of July. To claim your discount, head to Currentbody.com/notperfect. Thanks again to FOREO! On today's podcast, I am interviewing Dr. Ellen Vora, a holistic psychiatrist who is on a mission to break open old ways of treating mental health and instead offer an approach that considers the whole person and address the root cause. She spent nine years in medical school and then took it upon herself to research other methods of addressing mental health struggles that didn't seem to be getting fixed. Ellen learnt that there were more effective ways of thinking about the mind away from reflexively prescribing medication to suppress symptoms. She now takes a 360 approach when looking after patients, focusing on everything from physical health, sleep, nutrition, digestion, thought patterns, relationships and community to our connection with nature, creativity and purpose. Not only this, but Dr. Ellen is an acupuncturist, a yoga teacher, and received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University. And she is board certified in psychiatry and integrative holistic medicine. I feel deeply passionate about Ellen's work because I fully agree the mind cannot fix the mind often. We can't talk about mental health as this separate thing. Luckily, Dr. Vora's new book, The Anatomy of Anxiety, is bursting with research and roads for where to understand mental health and anxiety in a new way, a way that truly gets to the heart of the problem and has the power to make a real significant change. 03 Aug 2022 | Think like an inventor: Meet the record breaking FOREO founder Filip Sedic | 00:31:25
On today's Pop of Wisdom episode, I am interviewing one of the best beauty inventors in the world and of our generation, Filip Sedic. Filip is a Bosnian born Swedish inventor with more than 200 patents assigned to his name. He is the founder and CEO of FOREO, the record breaking Swedish brand reinventing beauty and wellness for better. FOREO's beauty tech designs deliver professional level treatments at home to build self-confidence. Filip's designs at FOREO have won over 100 design and industry awards and he's broken records with a FOREO product being sold every 3 seconds in 2017. I am not surprised the quality FOREO upholds and everything they do is obvious. You may have heard about the Luna range of facial cleansing devices. The naturally clean 99.5% of impurities from the skin fully. As a serial entrepreneur, he started his career in the car technology industry and moved into the telecom world. Eight years later, he transitioned into the beauty world, setting up his first company, LELO, in Stockholm. Filip went on to develop his second company that focused on pharmaceutical grade feminine care products, and in 2013, he founded FOREO. Filip has changed the beauty world, democratized access to tools ten years ago, only the top beauty professionals could use. And as a consequence, I felt honoured to have him on the show today to admire his innovation and entrepreneurship. -- Explore the FOREO range: https://www.currentbody.com/collections/not-perfect Find out more about the story of FOREO: https://www.foreo.com/the-story-of-foreo A huge thank you to our podcast sponsor FOREO who have partnered with Current Body, the beauty device experts, to offer Not Perfect listeners an exclusive 20% off all FOREO products for the month of July. 24 Jul 2022 | 120: Why movement is key to keeping your brain healthy with Caroline Williams | 00:40:13
Today's interview is Caroline Williams, a best selling author, a science writer and writes for many leading publications globally, from the New Scientist to the BBC to The Times, Telegraph, Boston Globe and many more. Her first hit book, Override, looks at rewiring the brain, and her latest book, Move, delves into why we need to move our body to look after our brain. This book had me glued to it and it is genuinely a must read for every single person. I had no idea how much of a disastrous affect our sedentary lives are having on IQ, mental health and of course, physical health as we've become addicted to our screens. Research suggests our intelligence and creativity has taken a hit and our anxious thoughts have multiplied as a result. I can't wait for you all to hear this conversation with Caroline, who writes in such a witty, fascinating and heavily researched backed way about why we need to move our legs and perhaps dance more too. I think we can all get on board with that! 07 Aug 2022 | 122: How raising your vibration can help you manifest with Mandy Morris | 00:40:08
On today's podcast, I am joined by the international best selling author and teacher, Mandy Morris. Her first book, Love "It's How I Manifest" was a global success. Since then she's been featured all around the world, teaching millions how to create the life they want and shift out of limiting patterns. Mandy's science and love based methods for creating instant and lasting change has been researched, studied and taught by therapists and coaches in the Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland, UK and the US. Mandy began her career counseling, studying psychology and also working in Norway, researching how psychosomatic health issues are created by thoughts, not environmental factors, and how individuals brain patterns can change through her communicative therapy methodology. She has just released her latest book, Eight Secrets to Powerful Manifesting: How to Create the Reality of Your Dreams which focuses on the tiny actions we can all do to help us co-create the lives that make us feel really excited. Manifesting has become a bit of a buzzword and I've definitely started to find the conversation around it a bit fluffy, sometimes disingenuous, and oftentimes quite self-indulgent but Mandy's approach I found different. I'm so looking forward to diving into Mandy secrets and finding out how to live the most joyful and authentic life.
