20 Feb 2023 | 'F*** off Gary' with Kate Twigg | 00:44:03
This week, we chat to devoted mum, Kate Twigg, about her journey with breast cancer (that would be Gary), and more recently, Leukaemia (Gary’s uninvited mate, Larry). Through breathwork, meditation, yoga, and a richly stocked dress-up box, Kate’s found her own way to cope through diagnosis, treatment and the repercussions that a cancer journey brings. The unexpected by-product of Kate’s cancer diagnosis was the confronting realisation she was using alcohol as a coping mechanism. We discuss our drinking culture, habits (eek), and the importance of setting boundaries. You can follow Kate’s journey on Instagram: @tn_beatingcanceragain. She’s open, honest, and bloody funny. 03 Aug 2024 | Relatable rants, the 90’s poo, and dead bird decluttering | 00:44:44
In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah kick things off with a relatable rant fuelled by a morning of cat sick surprises and premenstrual rage. Matty has a beef with the cosmetic industry and their unreasonable routines, endless serums, and the pointless fight against the nature of ageing. They reminisce about how everyone pooed in the 90s and if it’s now okay to handle not-so-urgent messages while handling your urgent business. Matty confesses the troubling realities of her former grubbiness and they both decide to resolve the last bastions of chaos at home with a little cathartic decluttering (preferably before something dies or sh*ts in there first). In this episode of Untidy we talk to an incredible woman that needs one heck on an introduction, Emma Ferris. Emma is a stress and resilience coach and founder of The Breath Effect whose ‘bring me to my knees moment’ can be heard in nail-biting detail on her podcast, ‘Conning the Con’. She is also the host of her second podcast, ‘The Bravery Academy’. We kick things off talking about Emma’s separation and divorce story. When Emma began dating again she had her ‘trial by fire’ and was targeted for her high empathy by a psychopathic conman who conned her out of a six-figure amount. Emma talks about how she coped in crisis and how she realised she had a choice either to be a victim in that moment, or to learn how to fight. She shares her wisdom for how to survive, recover, and thrive. 20 Oct 2023 | The myth of ‘Baby Brain’ with Dr Sarah McKay | 00:52:48
In this episode of Untidy we talk to Dr Sarah McKay. Originally from Christchurch NZ, Sarah is an Oxford University-educated neuroscientist, author, speaker and director of Think Brain's suite of online training programs. Sarah now resides in Sydney with her husband and two boys. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. We delve into the findings from Sarah’s recent book ‘Baby Brain’ - a term often used to describe the perceived cognitive decline a lot of new mums experience. We wanted to know exactly what was going on upstairs after we had our babies… Why were we putting fridge items in the pantry? And why did Hannah forget how to spell her own name after having her son? Sarah unpacks the science behind what actually happens neurologically during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and the research may surprise you! Have we been scammed?! We talk about the need to re-frame the connotations around ‘baby brain’, and why the term ‘supermum’ needs to be banished from our collective vocabulary. 13 Dec 2024 | Surrendering to imperfection | 00:39:04
In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah go off-script and ditch the plan for the episode to talk about what’s really on their minds — the beautiful chaos of life served with a side of emotional vulnerability and an unavoidable sprinkle of self-care. Hannah shares she’s losing her battle with COVID, operating with mashed potato for a brain and finding no choice but to surrender to the slow lane. Matty opens up about a parenting fail that morning that left her feeling particularly low. They talk about the art of repair after rupture and why it’s not always on your time schedule. There’s chat about the pressures of productivity, how to give yourself grace, and how to give yourself permission to lie in the sun with a good book (even if your bathroom remains borderline condemned while you do it). Untidy is celebrating some big wins: a Gold for Best Family Podcast and Silver for Best Branded Podcast at the NZ Podcast Awards! A massive thank you to all of you for your love and support—it means the world to us. Grab your ice cream (you’ll understand why!) and listen in for a good, slightly unhinged kōrero about life’s less-than-perfect moments. 28 Sep 2024 | Our gender identity journey with Melissa Banks | 00:54:55
In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty speak to Melissa Banks, a team leader, early childhood educator, step-mum to two, and mum to 10-year-old, Lilly, who embarked on a gender identity journey at age seven. Melissa shares her touching and illuminating story of finding her way through parenting a gender-questioning child when there was no real roadmap to go by. They discuss how their journey manifested and what steps they took to start moving forward, how they sought support from family, friends, the school, and other members of the rainbow community, how Melissa surrendered to an uncertain journey of open-ended exploration, the issues they faced, and the gift that it’s ultimately given them both along the way. This episode is a beautiful example of respectful, responsive parenting and finding a way forward by allowing the child to be the master of their own experience. Happy listening! 17 May 2024 | A frigate of fish fillets upon you | 00:42:29
In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty kick things off with a light rant about the overly emotionally charged occasion that is Mother's Day and share their individual "lulls" (to exercise a euphemism to the core). They wonder if we should all just focus on Easter and we discover that NZ's prime minister is finally seeking wise counsel. The update we've all been waiting for of Matty's call to Dr Ben Dentist London is delivered and the clock is ticking on a frigate of fish fillets to be deployed by our woman on the ground in England. 17 Jan 2025 | Gloria Es-de-van, lolly scrambles, and fowl behaviour | 00:55:35
In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah have been ‘saving it for the pod’ and while Matty hunkers in the dark corner of a sauna, and Hannah withholds Lego sets to survive the recording time, they reunite for 2025 with more tear-inducing lols. Hannah’s fallen in love with her vintage caravan, Gloria Es-de-van, and Matty’s got a long-awaited rant about lolly scrambles. The girls talk about their ADHD suspicions and Hannah’s bringing listeners along on the journey as she begins the process of diagnosis. Matty’s been making big contributions to her community while Hannah’s reporting some fowl behaviour caught on camera in hers. The girls talk about their intentions for the new year and how they’ll try, but, likely remain intentionally ignorant to keeping themselves accountable. Still! It’s January and there’s no reason not to enjoy feeling enthusiastic for the first month, at least! 04 Oct 2024 | Cauliflower’s punching, lost lumberjacks, and Matty’s country life | 00:49:03
In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah are back from their holidays with the chaotic energy of a toddler given two cans of Coke and a free puppy. They start as they mean to continue by striding out on a tangent that puts cauliflower back in its place. After determining school holidays remain an absolute nonsense for the working parent, Matty discovers that 82% of listeners support her in feeling victimised by the over-ripe banana — seemingly a recidivist offender of culinary crimes nationwide. While Matty’s been living her best English Country Living life, Hannah’s had a deep spiritual adventure in India that wouldn’t be complete without a couple of laps around the Bristol Stool Chart. They both agree to petition for the ‘butt hose’ to become the norm in Kiwi toilets. A marriage celebrant suggests Hannah shouldn’t lose all hope in dating apps, but, Hannah’s got a better plan simply involving an extra-large statement dog and loitering with intent. 24 Nov 2023 | Meeting the inner critic with Mike King | 01:38:24
In this episode of Untidy we talk to the iconic Kiwi entertainer, now, mental health advocate Mike King. Mike gives us a warts-and-all account of his evolution from an edgy and turbulent life as a breakthrough comedian, to his life-threatening reckoning that changed his path forever. Mike is now the founder of I Am Hope Foundation and initiative, Gumboot Friday, which fundraises to provide free and timely counselling for young people across Aotearoa. Mike is not afraid to rattle some cages as he works towards societal change that will positively impact the devastating suicide statistics amongst our rangitahi in New Zealand. We discuss the inner critic that lives inside of all of us and how this is where anxiety and depression stem. Through being honest about our own experiences, thoughts and feelings, we can parent our tamariki in a way that they understand they are not alone, they are worthwhile, and they are valued to give them a brighter future. Help Hannah and her team, Tuk Tuk Boom, raise vital funds for Gumboot Friday through their Givealittle page https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/tuk-tuk-boom as they race a tuk tuk around Sri Lanka! 16 Jun 2023 | Not ‘just a mum’ with Georgia Vavasour | 00:48:35
In this episode of Untidy we talk to Vedic Meditation teacher, Georgia Vavasour. Georgia has taught both Matilda and Hannah to meditate with this ancient technique. They discuss what Vedic Meditation is, how it’s a game changer for mums, the Vedic perspective on motherhood, along with their own personal journeys with meditation. Georgia initially discovered this technique after suffering several long-term health conditions – depression, chronic fatigue, digestive issues, and ultimately, bowel cancer. She was on an endless search to ‘feel better’, have some energy, and to finally feel a true sense of contentment and joy. Georgia explains to the girls how the ‘mother’ is viewed through the lens of the Veda, and it is a refreshing take compared to feeling like you’re sometimes, ‘just a mum’. Spoiler alert: she’s viewed as a queen, as she bloody well should! You can learn more about Georgia Vavasour at www.gvmeditation.com, and @gvmeditation on Instagram. In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah talk to the ‘queen of common sense’ parenting educator, Maggie Dent. Maggie is a celebrated author, podcaster, and speaker with a background in teaching, counselling, palliative care, and suicide prevention. Maggie draws from her deep knowledge of neuroscience and her rich experience as a high school teacher and mother of four boys, to share her refreshing, reassuring, and candid perspective on navigating the challenges of parenting through adolescence. Maggie’s latest book, ‘Help Me Help My Teen’, is a guide for parents to help their teens when they're struggling with the challenges and increased pressures today’s teens are facing, i.e. vaping, anxiety, sexuality, school grades, self-harm and sexual harassment. The conversation touches on how to really work alongside your teen through those tumultuous adolescent years. Maggie provides invaluable advice on managing conflict and disappointment without damaging the parent-child relationship. She advocates for maintaining a strong emotional connection as a teen’s ‘safe place’, even in the face of disagreements, to ensure that teenagers always feel supported and understood as they navigate this period of both enormous potential and also enormous risk. Maggie's insights are not only practical and grounded in reality, but deeply compassionate, to empower listeners to be able to guide their children through these critical years with love, patience, and understanding. In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah reissue a deeply moving conversation from the very beginning of the podcast with Matt Brown, while they take a little break over the holidays. Taimalelagi Mataio Faafetai (Matt) Brown is a New Zealand born Samoan author of the bestselling book, She is Not Your Rehab. 01 Nov 2024 | You can ring my bell! | 00:44:58
In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah share a little Halloween nostalgia, or rather, a history of underwhelm and awkwardness as they wonder how to bypass the event they’re underprepared for. A listener delights them with a video message as she teaches her daughter quick comebacks after the recent episode with Kasey Edwards on ‘Raising kids who like themselves’. Hannah’s offered a statement dog from a listener as she sets another honeytrap for eligible animal lovers, and, they discuss the merits of dogs with small surface area. She opens up about re-entering the dating world and the complexities of setting boundaries and managing expectations. They reflect on societal pressure to “catch up” to others' expectations. Finally, the roleplay mishap story that leaves both girls crying with laughter. (No spoilers here!) We talk sledgehammer therapy, gym grunting and why emotional outbursts in women make them ‘hysterical’ while men have simply been, ‘pushed too far’. We wonder if we’re making our eldest kids tolerate too much, and if Matty has any right to adopt that ‘hardware store swagger’ if she abandons her botched drawers on the roadside. 27 Oct 2023 | Prepping for a Positive Birth with Helen Bartrom | 00:53:58
In this episode of Untidy we talk to Helen Bartrom from Positive Births. Helen is a Clinical Hypnotherapist, mum of three, and host of The Positive Birth NZ podcast. She is also the author of ‘Positive Birth in New Zealand: using Relaxation, Hypnobirthing and Mindfulness’. Helen helps women and birthing people feel empowered for their upcoming birth, using hypnobirthing techniques. Matty recently had a session with Helen, so the girls dive into what hypnobirthing actually is, and the common misconceptions around it — i.e., whether it is just a ‘woo-woo’ fad. They discuss the importance of focusing on what you can control in the labour process, and how to let go of the need to control the things you can’t. We delve into the importance of the breath, and how it is used to work with your body to assist the birth process, as well as practical ways your partner can act as a support beam during labour. The girls also discuss the primal sounds that can occur in birth, why we should embrace the time in a woman’s life where it is socially acceptable to moo like a cow, and why positive birth stories need to be shared far and wide to flip the narrative that childbirth needs to be feared. Follow Helen on Instagram at @positive_births_nz, and check out her website https://www.positivebirths.co.nz/. Helen does in person sessions as well as online. Rachael introduces the concept of feeding disorders like ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and provides insights into the rise of eating disorders among children and adolescents. She offers advice on how parents can spot the early signs of disordered eating and the importance of seeking help early. This episode is packed with valuable tips and honest discussions that resonate with anyone concerned about their child’s, or their own, relationship with food and body image. 05 Jan 2024 | The unlucky 2% with Jo Roca | 00:45:17
In this episode of Untidy, we talk to Jo Roca, a creative director and working mum of two, for a raw and candid conversation about navigating the brutality of Hyperemesis Gravidarum during both her pregnancies. Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) affects 2% of pregnant women and is a severe type of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that can require hospitalisation and treatment with IV fluids and anti-nausea medication. Jo gives us an honest insight into what it’s really like living with Hyperemesis Gravidarum in pregnancy. There is very little scientific understanding and social awareness about this condition and Jo takes us through what this harrowing journey is really like from the inside. As well as talking about the physical, psychological, and emotional impacts of HG, Jo also talks about the impact on her relationships with her husband and first child. She discusses openly what helped, what didn't, how to get through it, and how to support someone you know who is suffering from HG. Untidy podcast is about honouring the person within the parent. 18 Apr 2025 | Puberty, power and progress with Dr Stacy Sims | 01:06:35
In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah are joined by internationally renowned exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist Dr Stacy Sims — a trailblazer on a mission to revolutionise how women train, eat, and perform. Known for her viral TED Talk “Women Are Not Small Men”, bestselling book Roar, and over 100 peer-reviewed papers, Stacy has dedicated her career to closing the gender gap in sports science. In this conversation, she dives into the often-overlooked physiological and emotional challenges girls face during puberty — challenges that are too often misunderstood or ignored, causing many to lose confidence and drop out of sport. With her new course NEXT GEN, Stacy is focused on educating coaches and parents to better support developing girls. She explores how puberty impacts performance, confidence, and injury risk, and why it’s crucial to rethink how we train and talk to our daughters. From the damaging effects of language like “girl pushups” and “sissy squats,” to the ripple effects of diet culture and uniform design, Stacy highlights the changes we need to make — and how to do it. This episode is a rallying cry to shift the culture around girls’ health, sport, and self-image — and to give them the tools, language, and support they deserve. 13 Sep 2024 | Unlock the crew sock — Millennial Edition | 00:57:50
In this episode of Untidy, Matty delights Hannah with an unprompted plug for My Big Moments books and Hannah explains why personalisation is so powerful for kids’ learning. They hear back from a listener with a very exciting update and unpack how to feel for where the flow is to follow your instincts. They explore scenarios where people have crossed their boundaries and they chose politeness from social conditioning, rather than following their instincts. They explore why people prioritise others’ comfort over their own safety and how they’d like to act differently. Hannah shares another bad pizza date and wonders if pizza is the problem, while Matty has a restaurant rant. They finally have a much-needed discourse for millennials about how to wear the crew sock over leggings look coined by Gen Z and what the rules are. But, who will have the last laugh? In this episode of Untidy we talk to former Black Ferns captain and māmā of two, Les Elder. Les was part of the World Cup winning squad in 2017 and later became captain while trying to start a family at the same time. With both her babies conceived by IVF, the process of conception was complicated whilst meeting the rigorous training schedule as a professional rugby player. Les continued training throughout her first pregnancy and returned to her career soon after giving birth. She experienced dangerous complications during her second pregnancy that resulted in emergency surgery. Les talks to us about how she handled rising into leadership as women’s rugby in Aotearoa New Zealand became professional. She explains how she juggled starting a family, maintaining a healthy relationship, recovering from pregnancy complications and birth with the pressures of performing at the highest level of rugby and continuing her career in sport. As a working mother that saw Les spend a lot of time away from her young children, she talks about how this felt and how she and her husband, Johnny, reconcile themselves with the choices they have made as a whanau. 08 Sep 2023 | Alcohol, baby loss & finding love with Hayley Holt | 00:52:53
In this episode of Untidy, we share our live chat with Hayley Holt. One of New Zealand's most well-known journalists and television hosts. Hayley’s recent book ‘Second Chances: Facing my demons and finding a better me’ shares the raw and honest story of her journey through alcoholism, finding sobriety, baby loss, and her unconventional love story. Hayley sat down with us at our first-ever live Untidy podcast event in Warkworth, and talked about her early days of high-performance competition, discovering alcohol, why she got sober, and her difficult path to motherhood. Her surprising love story has a heartbreaking twist as she and her partner lost their baby far along in the pregnancy. She speaks about how tools she learned from Alcoholics Anonymous and therapy helped her through deep grief, and how it brought the family closer together. Now a mother to young, Raven, Hayley’s next goal is about making peace with where she’s at (if the Warkworth community doesn’t turn her into a local dance teacher first). 11 Apr 2025 | Who the f*ck is Alice? | 01:01:12
In this episode of Untidy, Hannah is joined by fellow neuro-spicy, and guest co-host, Alice Soper. Alice is a multi-award-winning sports broadcaster, co-host of the ‘Full Credit’ podcast, women’s rugby obsessive, and unfiltered advocate responding to a broad spectrum of the world’s f*ckery. With Matilda away wrangling the most feral life admin, Alice takes the mic for an unmoderated kōrero about identity, queerness, relationships, and throwing out outdated life scripts. Together, Hannah and Alice unpack the tyranny of gender expectations, the temptation of dating a ‘broject’, and how to recover from being a ‘Band-Aid Bitch’. They explore the parallels between coming out and getting divorced, and each share their personal experiences of neurodivergence, ADHD, overstimulation, and the freedom that comes with being able to remove the mask. And, if you’ve ever felt on the sidelines of sport, Alice makes the most compelling case for why this is the year to get behind women’s rugby. The Black Ferns are gearing up to defend their World Cup title, and if Alice can’t get you excited, no one can. As mentioned in the show:

03 Jul 2024 | Preventing social media harm with Michael (Wippa) Wipfli | 00:43:36
In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matilda are joined by Michael (Wippa) Wipfli, the much-loved Australian radio presenter and co-host of the Fitzy, Wippa & Kate Ritchie breakfast show on Nova 96.9 Sydney. Wippa is the co-founder of 36 Months, a petition to raise the threshold for kids to legally join social media from 13 to 16 years of age in Australia. Statistics show we are raising ‘the anxious generation’ with young people facing a ‘mental health epidemic’ attributed to the rise in social media usage. Wippa is determined to petition the Australian government to change policy and protect children from social media harm. He maintains that kids need that 36 months between 13 and 16 for crucial brain development to develop a greater sense of self and secure identity before being exposed to the ‘likes’, rankings, and addictive features social media use presents. Wippa discussed conversations with Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, and the leader of the opposition, Peter Dutton, who are verbally supportive of policy change. Matilda and Hannah asked what they could do to support the movement in New Zealand, and the great race to parliament began with a direct message to Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, to make policy changes to give the young people of Aotearoa better mental health outcomes. 09 Feb 2024 | Irks and quirks | 00:37:55

Matilda reminisces on her vegetable revolution and Hannah enjoys the comedic value of the local community Facebook page. Nothing is solved in this episode and personal development loiters in a state of hiatus while the girls just chew the fat (but not the fruit ... and certainly not with eye-contact ...).
