29 Aug 2023 | “Want to be more resilient?” The answer is not what think… EP65 | 00:29:16
Nancy’s Do The Thing Retreat On Cape Cod: **apply here.** Buckle up, Podsters, today we are talking about resilience. People often associate resilience with grit or perseverance, but we've got it all wrong. Resilience is not about grinding. It’s not about sucking it up and “toughing it out”. In fact, the key to resilience is quite the opposite – it’s recovery. Resilience: Having the mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and ability to adjust to both internal and external demands (according to the American Psychological Association). Think about it… Nothing in this official definition of resilience says grind or grit. Instead, it's about how you recover every day; at home, work, and with the myriad of daily stressors. So then, how do we recover? We rest. Yes, it’s that simple. Rest and recover. At work this means taking a strategic pause during your work day. Work. Stop. Recover. Work. Stop. Recover. Being intentional with pausing throughout your day, at work and at home will ensure you are creating equal time in your performance zone and your recovery zone. And what about at home you ask? Equally as important as the need for recovery transcends all parts of your life. How long has it been since you took a pause? Do you remember how you spent your time? Short pause, long pause, a few minutes or an entire day – we MUST take time out for ourselves to create resilience and to LIVE OUR TRUTH. Here's a challenge for you, Podsters: this week, see if you can build in a few daily breaks for yourself and when you do, take note of what comes up after that time of recovery. Send us your feedback, topics you'd like us to cover, and of course, rave reviews of how the podcast is going. Sexist vitriol on National tv news? Oh no, you don't! Time for some sensitivity training and a mere smack on the hand after a lame apology. Well, we don't think that's good enough, either, CNN. If one person has a gender bias issue, chances are there's an issue with your company culture, and everyone needs some training. Disappointing in general, but particularly during Women's History Month and the theme of Embracing Equity. You can do better. This episode proves that size matters – particularly when it comes to how you are showing up in your business. Are you paying attention to your body language and taking up enough space? Often times when we are nervous, uncertain or simply waiting, we make ourselves small. Big meetings require big energy and in this episode we talk through tips and tricks to change how you're showing up at work, and in life. 10 Oct 2023 | Radiate Confidence and Own the Room; Using Body Language to Catapult Your Executive Presence EP71 | 00:25:39
Step into your strengths, light that spark and show up with clarity and confidence with a monthly shot of confidence and actionable tools in my (free!) Confidence Community. Sign Up You know who she is, the woman who owns the room without even saying a word. She radiates confidence and seems so very sure of herself, in any situation. Well Podsters, today we are sharing the deets on how she does it. We will explore how body language impacts your self-confidence and also, how your body language says it all before you even say a word. After today’s episode you will be locked and loaded to share your message like a boss while staying true to who you are. So, what can you do to own the room? 1 – Make sure you’re comfortable and not trying to wear something that you *think* will look and feel good. The more comfortable you are, the less you will pull, tug and worry about what you’re wearing. When comes to owning that stage, size does not matter so get the bigger size if it’s more comfortable. 2 - If you’re looking for unshakable confidence, try power posing. That is, taking up physical space. If it’s a meeting room, spread out your work. If you’re on stage – walk around and dominate that space! 3 – Be mindful of your body language. This is a natural next step to taking up space. What's your body saying? Are you power posing? Arms open? Hands moving? Doing something with your body that you would naturally do when you’re with friends or family will automatically release your confidence factor which is the number one way to command attention. Remember, our mantra here at Unmute Yourself is to Speak Up, Stand Out and Step Up and your body language is the perfect opportunity to literally step in to who you know you are meant to be. We’re rooting for you! Send your feedback, topics you'd like to hear more about, and of course, rave reviews of how the podcast is going. Here's how to reach me: http://www.nancymedoff.com

01 Aug 2023 | Level Up Your Network to Level Up Your Life EP61 | 00:34:24
DO THE THING RETREAT - Early Bird pricing ends soon so learn more and apply here. Hey Podsters, if you want to level up your life it’s time to level up your network. Take a strategic look at who you are spending the most time with and who you surround yourself with. Is your posse of friends, family, or colleagues supporting the life you want to live? Are they actively helping you to get where you want to be? Are their values aligned with yours? Or, are they contributing to the glass ceiling you keep bumping into as you try to step into your highest self? It is time to level up. Pay attention to your energy and how you feel around your network. Is it an equal exchange? We all have that friend who constantly complains or sucks the life out of the room (harsh, yes - and also true). Is this relationship too taxing on you? The energy opportunity cost here is legit - so let’s make sure you’re curating the right network for who you want to become. Each new chapter of your life will demand a different you. Think about who is already where you want to be and how you might join their circle. In fact, Podsters we recommend making a list. Who has what you want? They’re the best ones to show you the way - AFTER you’ve added them to your circle and created an equal energy exchange. When you’re intentional about who gets your time and energy, it won't be long until one day you’re surrounded by those very people you had on your list. We want to know, how are you going to level up your network. How we are treated, what we are told, and how we are made to feel both as kids and as grownups have an incredible impact on our confidence, our self-worth, our beliefs and our outcomes. All of us have experienced some form of bullying and in this episode, we share our own personal and painful stories about the who, why, where and how bullies show up in our life. There is nothing that feels good about being bullied, and the only one who can make it stop is you – with tools, language and our favorite…boundaries! Once it stops you then have a choice. You can internalize, believe and become what they say or you can prove them wrong and use those feelings to fuel you. We’re betting on YOU. Unmute Yourself and own the room with a monthly dose of inspiration and actionable tools in my Confidence Community. Happy New Year, Podsters! I'm super pumped to be back. After taking a little break and pre-recording some podcasts, I can honestly say that I missed you. We're back in action with that fresh New Year energy, some cool new ideas, and a bunch of awesome episodes headed your way this January. What better way to kick off the New Year on The Unmute Yourself Podcast than to have our amazing OG co-host, Beth, back in the house, talking about something she's an expert in. WORDS! Not everyone is into choosing a word or words of the year, and that's totally cool. I'm all about waiting for the right mindset. There is no need to stress it. Because, trust me, setting your goals with "jank energy" is just a one-way ticket to resentment. Words matter (yeah, I said it first, and I'll keep saying it). We've been all about changing the conversation. And the words you use are powerful. AND WHEN YOU USE BOTH OF THESE THINGS (words and vision) TO PROPEL YOU FORWARD: You become unstoppable. As we start the new year, let's start attracting the good stuff, building momentum without going off the deep end, and embracing surrender when life throws curveballs. Choosing your word or words of the year is all about setting intentions for the year. I'm hyped about this blank canvas called 2024, ready to attract more fun with ease. So, Podsters, what's your word for the year? One On One Success Accelerator Application Connect with Beth: https://www.thatsaspade.com/
05 Mar 2024 | Your Career Commandments: Three Keys to Navigating Career Success EP96 | 00:29:21
Big news, Podsters! Today I’m sharing my Career Commandments – the three things I wish I knew (or had listened to) that would have saved me a lot of time, energy and angst. BUT! Before we dive in – it’s time to celebrate together! Together we have grown our Unmute Yourself community and hit a major podcast milestone – we hit 10,000 downloads! This is a huge deal Podsters because this means we have affected the life and career of over 10,000 listeners! I am truly humbled and grateful for all the shares, the listens and the support. Keep the comments and suggestions coming! Now on to today’s podcast. Think about all the time, money, and energy invested you’ve invested in your career. Think about all the times you threw up your hands and said “I JUST WISH SOMEONE WOULD GIVE ME THE PLAYBOOK!”. I’ve got you! Today I’m sharing the top three career tidbits which I think are most important to catapult you and your career. #1 - The best candidate does not always get the job. Hard to hear and also true. You know this happens and maybe it’s even happened to you. The candidate who gets the job has less experience, less time with the company, less all the things. And yet – they get the job. Today I’m telling you why this happens, how this happens and most important – how you can stop this from happening. #2 - Titles and salary matter. I know how this sounds, Podsters and I personally have never chased either. What I’m sharing here is that your salary should be commensurate with how YOU feel you are valued in the role. If you are in a space where money isn’t as important as what you are actually doing all day – great! I am suggesting here that you make sure that you feel you feel valued in the role and for many people, this means money or a title. As for the title – also an area I have never been too concerned – unless the title will help you to open doors. There truth here is that there are many Posters organizations where the “bigger” title gets more resources and support. So, if this is your environment, I suggest in this case that the title DOES matter. Again, I go back to feeling valued. Are you doing the work of three people, continuously taking on more, and staying the same in terms of salary and title? If you aren’t feeling good about this – it’s time to listen to your instincts. #3 – You have GOT to get feedback from people who don’t like you. Here’s why: If there are people out there who don’t want to work with you, it’s highly probable that they are making this known. And when your name comes up for a project or assignment – you want to be considered no matter WHO is on the team. I’m not suggesting that you be fake, or drink the Kool-Aid – I’m saying that the more you know about your blind spots, the more you can overcome these and work with anyone. And THAT is how you want to be known. It’s uncomfortable and it’s also the best kind of feedback you can receive. out a trusted advisor or mentor who will give it to you straight. Even better – talk to the person with whom you are having conflict to figure out a way to work together. I promise you this is how you win. Podsters, these three Career Commandments (and the bonus one as well!) changed the trajectory of my career and they can change yours too. I believe in you! 16 Jan 2023 | The Happiness Curve - The older you are the happier you are....no, really. | 00:26:03
In this episode we discuss the happiness curve which is...wait for it....a U-SHAPED curve. This means that the older you get, the happier you become. Yes, science has proven this. Yes this is for women, men, cross-cultures, income levels, job roles, everything. So if you're feeling dismissed because of your age and wondering if you're crazy, know this: not only are not not crazy, you are in fact more knowledgeable, happier and more at peace than those dismissive knuckleheads! Feeling like you'll never have all the answers and looking for a mentor? Those of us who are at the peak of the happiness curve have the knowledge and experience that our younger counterparts have yet to develop. AND... also scientifically proven: the more we share our "critical knowledge" (aka wisdom), the bigger the curve. Making strategic decisions and solid choices Is not a game of speed but a game of wisdom. 02 Oct 2024 | Acting 'As If' Can Change Everything in Your Life, Business, and Career EP124 | 00:25:49
Hey there, Podsters! Quick question for you: If doctors, pro athletes, and scientists use visualization to transform health, boost performance, and hit major goals, why aren’t we doing the same for our own lives? It's time to change that, Podsters and that’s exactly what we are going to do today. Today, we’re talking about the magic of acting as if you've already achieved your goals. That’s right - and this isn’t just woo-woo —it’s backed by science. Whether it’s performance coaches with athletes or doctors guiding patients to better health, the data’s clear: When you act like you’re already living the life of your dreams, your subconscious gets on board and starts making moves in that direction. So, how do you do it? First, get crystal clear on your goals. Don’t just say, “I want a better career” or “I want to be healthier.” Nope - we’re talking specific details here. Visualize what your day-to-day life looks like when you’ve hit that goal. What are you wearing? Who are you talking to? How are you feeling? Get all up in those details, and watch your brain start rewiring itself for success. Why does this work? Simple: confirmation bias. When you start acting as if you’ve already got the job, the lifestyle, the whatever it is you’re after, your brain begins pulling in people, situations, and opportunities that match that belief. You stop waiting for life to happen and start living like it already has. Sounds like magic, but it's science. Let’s say you’re switching careers. The moment you start “acting as if,” you’ll find yourself networking with new people, stumbling on the right job posts, and suddenly, that “impossible” leap doesn’t seem so far-fetched. The same goes for health, relationships, finances—you name it. Visualize, act as if, and your reality will start shifting to match. So buckle up, Podsters, because today we’re diving into the game-changing mindset shift that turns “someday” into today. Get ready to stop dreaming and start doing by tapping into the power of ‘acting as if.’ Let’s do this! 22 Dec 2022 | Friendships | 00:36:19
This episode is dedicated to friendships. As we wind down this year and look towards our future selves, how do our friends fit into our lives? Friends are your support, your community. Good friends root for you and lift you up. They also give it to you straight. The best friendships take work and patience to continue to grow. What do you do when a friendship is no longer serving you? Maybe the relationship is awkward because you've gone in different directions, maybe there's a pink elephant in the room and you haven't addressed it. Or, don't want to give it your energy. Re-evaluating and releasing a friendship is complicated - do you have a conversation, ghost them completely? Or simply do the sloooow fade. And what happens when jealousy clouds a friendship? A little envy is okay, but coveting your friend's life or happiness is a problem. Feeling dread when you see the call coming in, also not OK. Listen in as two friends who bring their own stories, thoughts and anecdotes get real about how to be a true friend. And when to walk away when someone you thought was your friend isn't. So often our focus is on women, and men also deal with fear and insecurity, struggle with Imposter Experience, and yes - men get harassed, too. Men are raised to "take it like a man", "buck up", "just ignore the pain" so they squelch their emotions and push through with courage and determination. As a result, they walk around with all that baggage because they can't speak up or rely on their hive the way women do. We are unpacking the reality of balancing big ambitions with the need for self-care, especially when life’s a little chaotic. Boundaries, life-work blending, self-possession: Cara’s practical wisdom shows us why taking care of ourselves isn’t just a luxury; it’s essential if we want to keep showing up as our best selves. 04 Apr 2023 | Unsolicited feedback? Thanks but no thanks. | 00:34:43
There are two players in the volley of unsolicited feedback, the giver and the receiver. If you're the receiver, you need a way to siphon out the feedback that doesn't work for you and hold onto the helpful nuggets that do help. Warning - those are most likely rare if you didn't ask for them in the first place. You also can tell the giver that you're not taking "constructive criticism" at the moment. As for the givers, stop and ask yourself: Did this person show me in any way that they needed my personal opinion? And am I sure the person I'm freely giving feedback to actually respects, wants, and needs my opinion? The answer may be humbling. In our own conversation volley, we talk about ways that receivers can handle the givers and their feedback, and how givers can be more respectful of the receiver's boundaries. 13 Feb 2024 | Valentine’s Special Episode: Putting Yourself First in Work, Love & Life EP93 | 00:20:33
Love is in the air, am I right Podsters? Valentine's Day vibes are strong and today’s episode is a love letter from me to you, about you and for YOU. It’s not surprising there’s a special place in my heart for Galentine’s Day; for someone whose life work is celebrating and empowering women there’s not much better than a holiday where women celebrate women! And also, Valentine's Day can be tricky for many of us: solo or partnered up – with all of this love coming at us, I can’t help but think about how we are loving OURSELVES. How we are speaking to ourselves, about ourselves. How we are filling our own cup. It’s easy to feel depleted and to run on empty – we all do it. In today’s episode I talk about the things I do to make sure I’m showing up for myself. Managing my accessibility (hello, boundaries), knowing and DOING what works in my daily routines, and being super vigilant about over-extending myself are three of the ways I honor and commit to myself. Let’s be honest here, Podsters. At the end of the day, you are all you’ve got. Sure, you have friends, a family, maybe you’re partnered up or playing the field. Today isn’t as much about loving those AROUND you – it’s about how you’re showing up for yourself. You are the only one who is guaranteed to show up for you. So, are you? Podsters, this is my Valentine’s wish for you: take care of yourselves, be kind to yourself, make sure you are saving time and energy for yourself, and stay tuned for more powerful episodes and insights. Peace, love, and see you next week! 03 Oct 2023 | Break Through the Glass Ceiling by Mastering the Art of Effective Communication EP70 | 00:27:26
Hey Podsters, we are talking about HOW TO OWN THE ROOM. And we mean, ANY room. You know who she is…that woman who walks into the room and immediately all eyes are on her. The one who gets her point across kindly, firmly, and with grace. How does she do it? We start with listening skills and as you know, the ability to listen before we react is a game changer, and the more you listen, the more likely you are to get our point across. 21 Mar 2023 | Kin Keeping - the invisible work and social role that's impacting women's mental health | 00:26:21
You're the connector, the planner, the maker of family peace. You know the birthdays and celebrations and make sure they're acknowledged. But are you acknowledged for all this behind-the-scenes work that keeps kin together? And do you even want this role that is part of this generational baton? There's a name for all of this work; the remembering, contacting, gift getting, nurturing and plans making when it comes to family. If you're a Kin Keeper and it's stressing you out, it's time to stop or create a few boundaries around this invisible and very real workload. If you embrace the role, it's time to own and acknowledge what an amazing job you're doing - while at the same time encouraging the men in your family to continue to build their own strong family ties. In this short, fun and helpful episode, Nancy and Beth share ways they have handled the fine line between what they do and don't want to do as "kin keepers". https://bit.ly/coachingwithnancym https://bit.ly/confidencecollab Join Nancy’s Confidence Community: lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/gWU7owR Do The Thing Retreat: nancymedoff.com/do-the-thing/

In essence, you want to know that the task at hand will end with success. Why then, are you leaving your most critical conversations to chance? Or even worse, adapting an approach that is 80% likely to fail? Your likelihood of success is only 20% when you approach a communication or negotiation without confidence. Restated – this means that you are only 20% likely to achieve your desired outcome when you communicate without confidence. We all know that Confidence. Impacts. Outcomes. Performance reviews, job offers, selling your product or service – you MUST be confident in order to succeed and here we discuss HOW MUCH your lack of confidence is costing you, your team and your organization. Today, I’m shining a light on a topic that has been coming up in many conversations with my clients but rarely discussed: SELF-SABOTAGE. Whether it’s in your career, business, health, happiness, or relationships, self-sabotaging behaviors can quietly undermine your success and negatively impact your well-being. At work, these behaviors might include procrastination on important projects, perfectionism that prevents you from finishing tasks, avoiding opportunities to network, or downplaying your accomplishments to avoid standing out. Self-sabotage doesn’t just affect your career it can also wreak havoc on your personal relationships. Let’s talk about how behaviors like pushing people away, avoiding vulnerability, and fearing intimacy can prevent you from forming deep, meaningful connections. You might find yourself picking fights over minor issues, constantly questioning your partner's loyalty, or feeling undeserving of love and affection. These patterns can make it difficult to build and maintain healthy, fulfilling relationships. Your health is another area where self-sabotage can strike. This might be you engaging in unhealthy habits like skipping workouts, overeating, neglecting self-care, or relying on substances to cope with stress. Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward developing healthier behaviors that nourish your body and mind. Here’s the thing, Podsters. We all do it, and we call can stop. You can change this behavior by recognizing these patterns and allowing yourself some grace; and today I’m giving you specifics on how you can stop the self-sabotage. 06 Nov 2024 | The Strategic Pause: Your Secret Weapon for a Total Reboot EP129 | 00:26:06
Hey there, Podsters! With the holiday season gearing up, it’s that time of year when the to-do lists get longer than a CVS receipt. Goals, gatherings, gift wrapping, and maybe a touch of seasonal burnout - sound familiar?
A strategic pause. Nope, this isn’t about dropping everything and running off to an island (though that sounds amazing, right?). This is about intentionally stepping back, not to quit but to realign and regroup. Think of it as a refresh button for your life and career. Like a solid eight hours of sleep for your ambitions, a strategic pause recharges you. It’s your chance to recalibrate, reconnect with your purpose, and figure out your next moves - minus the overwhelm. Let’s talk strategy: My favorite way to do this is with a “love, hate, meh” list. Yup, it’s exactly what it sounds like. What lights you up about your work? What drains the life out of you? And what’s just… meh? This exercise cuts through the noise and gives you crystal-clear direction on what deserves your energy and what needs to be shown the door (or delegated, stat).
And here’s a big one: revisit your “why.” Our motivations evolve—just like we do. What you wanted three years ago might not be your driver anymore, and that’s perfectly okay. Priorities shift, and so should your game plan. Tell me, Podsters: When are you scheduling your strategic pause? Let’s chat, reset, and head into this season ready to thrive. Nancy’s Do The Thing Retreat On Cape Cod: Early Bird pricing ends soon so learn more and **apply here.** Let's talk power skills, Podsters. We used to call collaboration, empathizing, and advocating for others “soft skills”. And this never sat very well with us. These “soft skills” are what makes a great leader and more often than not – “soft skills” is a term used when discussing the skills that women bring to the table. Soft. Really? Collaborating, empathizing, and advocating for others are 100 percent your power skills. Power. Not soft. Human connection has never been more important. A leader with conflict resolution, empathy, and creativity is highly sought after. Emotional Intelligence is highly valued when choosing who will lead a company, organization, or team. (More on emotional intelligence in an upcoming episode). Women are inherently better negotiators. We're hard-wired to seek a resolution, advocate for others, and create a win-win situation. This is scientifically proven. Despite this, women do not have the same success as men when negotiating. Many women are coached or told to “be tough”, and “act like a man"; which actually backfires because they're not being their authentic selves. By doing this women are perceived as too aggressive or cutthroat. Remember, professional doesn't always mean tough. It's about finding your authentic self and recognizing your strengths. Don't be afraid to be vulnerable and embrace your emotional intelligence. This superpower will take you far both personally and professionally. What are your power skills? Fall is almost here, and we're ready to kick it into high gear. Get ready for some powerful topics and game-changing guests. Let us know what you want to hear, and we'll make it happen! To set yourself up to enjoy these Fall days we must talk about the true value of your time. As we get back to the grind, whether that’s school, work, or just life getting busier. 21 Nov 2023 | I’m grateful AND…How to Bypass Toxic Gratitude EP77 | 00:16:56
The Season of Thankfulness is upon us and I want to talk with you about a the concept of “Toxic Gratitude”. Last Thanksgiving, I was strolling on the beach, and I was overcome with this incredible wave of gratitude. There are so so so many things to be grateful for and in that moment I was feeling all of them. After a few minutes, I started thinking about what I wanted for myself and my business in the coming year. Where I wanted to grow my business, how I wanted to live my life, how I wanted to show up. I could have let that shame cycle of "I already have so much; why do I want more when others have less?" take hold, but I didn’t. I thought to myself: I’m incredibly grateful AND ALSO… I want more for my life. So what is toxic gratitude, and what does it have to do with my epiphany on the beach that day? And why am I bringing this idea to you now? Toxic gratitude is gratitude that is either shaming, manipulating or even in some cases: gaslighting. It is gratitude that is being used either on you or by you to manipulate behavior. I caught this idea on a Mel Robbins podcast, and it really resonated with me. Here are three ways toxic gratitude can show up in your life:
Try this instead: say, "I'm grateful and also..." and then see what comes up. Perhaps nothing. Maybe you’re grateful, and that’s all. Awesome! Or, if you immediately think about something after the ALSO, this is what you know you truly want in your core, and it could be what you are avoiding. I am incredibly grateful for each and every one of you who has helped to build his powerful community. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you. If you’re loving the podcast, you’ll love my Confidence Community even more! 23 Jan 2024 | Rebel Planning: The 12-Week Revolution for Crushing Your Goals and Unleashing Your Power EP90 | 00:48:14
You know those big goals you have that you keep pushing to the next week? Or the next month? Or, who are we kidding – the next year? The book, the career change, the podcast, starting your side hustle, taking your side hustle to the next level, the new business, the rebranding, your resume – ALL OF IT. When we think about these big, powerful goals we set for ourselves – overwhelm kicks in and we end up torpedoing our own success. Not today, Podsters! Today I’m talking with business strategist and the most organized person I know – Kathleen Lawson who has made a career and successful business out of showing people how to bring their vision to life. And specifically, how the 12-week year is your secret sauce for leveling up in all areas of your life. "So, where are we with this?" is a question we all need in our lives, especially when powering through those goals and turning our plans into action. We dig into the magic of time blocking, not just in your daily grind but in planning your life 12 weeks at a time; scheduling specific tasks within a set timeframe, custom-tailored to your peak energy time frames, and when you’re most likely to actually DO THE THING. We both love the 12-week year concept and give the side-eye to the traditional annual planning cycle. Kathleen makes a solid case for the practicality of shorter planning periods, throwing the spotlight on the urgency and laser focus these focused, measurable busts of action bring. It's all about adapting to the twists and turns of your own personal life rollercoaster. Did you know that the key to overcoming procrastination is simple? Kathleen does and she sums it up in one word. CLARITY. Kathleen also reminds us that strategic planning goes beyond just tasks; it's about identifying dependencies, setting priorities, and recognizing that you're the captain of your ship. Ready to face obstacles head-on? Kathleen's got the playbook. Plan for potential roadblocks, tackle challenges proactively, and know yourself so you can DO THE THING at work, at home or wherever you wish! So, if you're up for the challenge of effective goal-setting, mastering time blocking, and crafting a roadmap to success in your personal and professional life, buckle up, Podsters, this one's epic! 18 Jul 2023 | Giving Grace: Your Ticket to a Happier and More Fulfilling Life EP59 | 00:30:43
Join the DO THE THING RETREAT What's up, Podsters? We're back with another awesome podcast. I'm riding the waves of life, enjoying the peaks and valleys. Right now, I'm at the peak, and it feels great. This feeling can be attributed to one word: Grace. I've had a couple of experiences recently that reminded me of the power of giving grace. One was when I was at the Western Wall in Israel. When I was waiting in line, this lady cut right in front of me. Normally, I'd have been annoyed, but I let it slide. Guess what? Turns out, she must have carried a heavy burden of grief as she broke down in tears. She couldn't handle the pressure and needed that space more than I did. At that moment, I realized that not saying anything to her about taking my spot in line was what she needed. She needed grace. This got me thinking about why we can give grace to others but not ourselves. It's easy to be so hard on ourselves. We're only human, right? It's okay to make mistakes. Like the women at the Western Wall, we need grace in our lives. Give yourself the same grace. Let me challenge you: Think about those times when you lose patience. Maybe it's driving your car, in line, or with a close friend and something comes up that triggers you. Can you give them a little grace? You don't know what they are facing. Can you extend the same grace to yourself? When we let go of judgment and embrace grace, it's empowering. That's what we're here for, podsters, to empower each other to do the thing. Sending you grace and positive vibes. Catch you in the next episode! Peace out! 02 May 2023 | Waiting for the Shoe to Drop and How to Embrace Joy EP47 | 00:36:25
"I don't want to jinx myself". "Oh it's not that big of a deal". "Thank you, I'm not sure how long it will last". Sound familiar? You've said it, we've said it and the sad part is - we will continue to have these self-defeating thoughts rather than truly embrace the joy in our lives. Why do we hold ourselves back? Why do we think that something bad must be coming after something good? That trepidation you are feeling is a basic human emotion. Fear. Fear of losing what we have gained. Fear of being judged for our success. Fear that the joy we are feeling is temporary and will be followed by pain or loss. To fully experience joy we must be vulnerable. We must be present. 20 Dec 2022 | High 5's, Fist Pumps and Boo Yahs...it's time to CELEBRATE! | 00:30:16
Can we get a woot wooooot???!! If you're here and you're listening, you've got something to celebrate as we close out 2022 and here we talk about how we can and should be celebrating more! When we act like ninja warriors - jumping from one challenge to the next without stopping to pat ourselves on the back, we don't stop to acknowledge our accomplishments. This means we forget about the many milestones and micro-wins throughout the year. By not stopping to enjoy the achievement, we are setting ourselves up for burnout and in fact, slowing down our productivity. Fun fact - productivity increases more from positive emotion that it does from discipline. So, let's celebrate! Maybe you get yourself a Starbucks, a facial, or a new pair of Jimmy Choos for a more substantial win. You get to choose! So, get your calendar and your pom poms and take a stroll down memory lane for 2022. Reflect on the amazing things you did to make 2022 a successful year. And if you're feeling it - let the world know! #unmuteyourselfwins We want your feedback, friends! 28 Nov 2023 | Work Less, Sleigh Hard: A Professional’s Handbook for Holiday Zen EP78 | 00:18:15
It’s time, Podsters! December is upon us and this week’s episode if exactly what you need to finish the year, whatever way you choose. Do you want to finish strong? Great. Do you prefer to ease up and enjoy all the joy which comes with the holiday season? Also great. Here’s the thing Podsters: we are all about action over here at Unmute Yourself the Podcast and this week I’m making the case for inaction. That’s right. Deferring action. Deciding how you want to spend the next 30 or so days, and finishing the year soft, sane, and slow. Why the pivot? This past weekend, many of my friends slowed down to enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday. We did not get on a plane to cram in one more work trip, we did not rise early and grind all day and we did not “FINISH STRONG”. Instead, we took time to enjoy everything the start of our holiday season has to offer. For me, that meant a significant amount of time walking on the beach, too much time on the couch and lazy afternoons doing nothing. And here's what I noticed. I witnessed a big change in how those around me were showing up. I saw my friends become more vibrant and live healthier by deliberately slowing down. I could hear it in their voice and see it on their faces. And I saw myself revel in taking it slow which is something I rarely do. I get it, Podsters: It’s go time. I know that December is the Super Bowl of business. Wrapping up contracts, planning to “hit the ground running in January, financial close outs – all the things. So, I'm proposing three things to end your year with ease.
Life isn't meant to be a constant grind and we finish the year however we choose to do so. So, Podsters, my wish for you is to end the year strong, on your terms, and with EASE. 25 Oct 2022 | Why NOT You? Your Limiting Beliefs Could Be Holding You Back | 00:31:57
Woo Woo versus science! It is scientifically proven that your beliefs impact your outcomes. And we mean TRULY believing that you can, will, and deserve to live the best life for you. Doubtful? Think about your favorite celebrity or success story and use that person as proof. What makes them so different than you? Nothing. They believed. Believing will recalibrate your own confirmation bias and you will then find facts, data, and PEOPLE to support this belief which gets you closer to that desired outcome. So, instead of telling yourself that you'll never: get that job, meet that partner, make that money, or take that trip try this - Ask yourself: "Why Not me?" The more you ask this one question, the closer you'll get to the things you really want. What if the bottom falls out and after you achieve this big stretch goal and it gets taken away? Simple awareness when you feel yourself sabotaging your own success and pausing to think about why you're taking fear based action will help you to stop the behavior before you derail your hard work on the path towards what you define as success. 27 Jun 2023 | Letting Go of What's No Longer Serving You EP56 | 00:37:17
Join the DO THE THING RETREAT BY CLICKING HERE Hey Podsters, let's talk about letting go of what is no longer serving you. Beliefs, habits, stories, and even people. When you let go of one thing, you are making room for another. Creating space to do what’s best for you. Engineering the life you want. In fact, holding on to what is not in your best interest is oftentimes the root cause for you feeling stuck, stagnant, or that awful feeling that you are settling for average. And remember, we don’t do average. Often time we hold on to what is no longer serving us because of the risk of letting go. What’s worse? The risk of staying the same and living with regret? Or the risk of letting go so you can do the thing? YOU KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU. Habits and beliefs feel familiar, like we're in control, but are we really? If we are letting these beliefs, habits, thoughts, or people hold us back – we are not controlling anything. Today’s call to action is to simply be aware. Be aware of when your thoughts are limiting your future. Aware when you are with someone who is draining your energy. This awareness will eventually bring change. The change you know you need. The change you know you want. And the change you know will bring you closer to what’s waiting for you on the other side of your fear. Get ready, Podseters, to let go of the things and people who are holding you back. Send us your feedback, topics you'd like us to cover, and of course, rave reviews of how the podcast is going. 46% of women are unpleasantly surprised when they take a look at their finances at home. That’s almost HALF OF US, Podsters. And these are the very same women who lead teams, create budgets, analyze finances as part of their job and make major financial decisions at work. 27 Feb 2024 | From Power Suits to New Pursuits: Unleashing Your Transferable Skills to Land that Dream Job EP95 | 00:18:21
Podsters – we are bringing the heat today because I'm fired up about a common misconception I keep hearing. It's the whole "I can't change careers because I'll have to take a pay cut" misunderstanding. You know how this goes: you've worked really hard, you make made good money, and you're not about to have to “start over” after all of this hard work and sacrifice. Well, I'm here to tell you – YOU DO NOT HAVE TO START OVER. I'm baffled by the number of people who think changing careers means an automatic pay cut. Or an automatic demotion. Or an automatic “start all over”. Where does this even come from? You don't have to start over. Your skills are transferable. And in fact, this new perspective if you’re coming from another field may even be a competitive advantage. \ So, let's debunk the myth that changing careers means losing money. This is simply not true. Take your strengths, your top three, and understand that these strengths – your greatest contribution to your CURRENT role is precisely your ticket to that new gig. WITHOUT LOSING A DIME. Here’s an example: Let’s say your jam is “building relationships”. You’re the best. A pro. People LOVE opening up to you and it’s helped you tremendously in your career. Awesome. That skill is pure gold in any industry. Whether it's sales, human resources, or project management, it's about human connection, and every company, boss and hiring manager wants more human connection. And if you’re worried about losing benefits when taking that side hustle full-time, let's clear this up as well. A decent healthcare plan can be procured for around $1k per month and in some cases, even less. So do the math, factor in an additional 12k you will need in your business plan and suddenly, it's not as daunting as you think. So, Podsters, as we head into job-seeking season, remember this, YOUR SKILLS are your CURRENCY, and you don't have to settle for less. Don't let assumptions and fears keep you in a place you know you don’t belong. Let’s DO THIS! Apply to Work with Nancy 1:1 by Clicking HERE
05 Sep 2023 | Charisma and the Confidence/Charisma Connection EP66 | 00:38:09
EARLY BIRD PRICING ENDS SEPT 8th: Nancy’s Do The Thing Retreat On Cape Cod: **apply here.** It’s September, Podsters, and we are welcoming in sweata weatha with this juicy topic: Charisma! We are fired up, back in action and today we are spilling the tea on all things charisma: what is it, who has it and how can I get more of it? We all have people in our lives who are simply magnetic. They captivate the room, have that special “it factor” and draw people in without even trying. Or so we think. Why are these people so alluring? How are they different? Where does this charisma come from? Are they born with it or is charisma something you can develop over time? Being charismatic comes down to many things: warmth, human connection, powerful communication, competence and you guessed it – confidence. How then, do we develop these skills? The answer is easier than you think! From quiet charisma (we’re looking at you introverts) to natural charisma (maybe she’s born with it), dark charisma (we don’t spend too long on this one) to simple allure – today’s the day we demystify the mystique and set you on your way to being the most captivating person in the room. Yes, you. You don’t have to be gorgeous, you don’t have to be rich and you certainly don’t have to know everything. All you need is to let yourself be vulnerable in order to connect with another person. We can agree on one thing: You won’t develop charisma by playing it safe. So, what are you willing to do today to step out of your comfort zone and make a connection? 19 Dec 2023 | Take Back Your Life and Change the Conversation: At Home (Part 2) EP83 | 00:24:54
Hello, Podsters! It’s the most wonderful time…. of the year. And for some of us it’s the most time-consuming, overcommitting, and energy-draining time of the year, too. It’s so easy to overextend and blow off boundaries in pursuit of that people-pleasing itch, especially with the pressure of the holidays. Here’s the thing: Ever notice what happens when we pour all your energy into others? We get tired, dim our spark, and forget to show up for ourselves. I’ve got you, Podsters! Here’s what I do when I feel this happening. My go-to move for managing my energy is to avoid overcommitting in the first place and here’s how you can too: When making plans, or agreeing to give your time to something, think about how you'll THEN, at the actual time of the event, not how you feel at the moment you are being asked. Already drowning in holiday happenings and commitments? Here’s how you can take back your life. It’s simple. Cancel. Yes, cancel or postpone. Need help with what to say? Try these scripts: · “I’m overcommitted, and I want to make sure I’m fully focused on you. Can we plan to do this on X date instead?” · “I’m sorry I didn’t think this through when I confirmed these plans. I’m not going to be able to make it. Thank you for understanding. “ · “I’ve been out every night this week and I need time to regroup and refocus. I’d love for you to go to the party without me and I look forward to hearing all about it when you get home!” When you give away all your energy, you can't show up as your best self. And that’s not fun for anyone. So Podsters, are you ready to switch up the conversation at home? Unmute Yourself and own the room with a monthly dose of inspiration and actionable tools in my Confidence Community. Spoiler alert: my new book (“with the title Change the Conversation, Change Your Life”) is coming out in Q1 so hop on the [Pre-launch list HERE] to be the first to get your signed copy!
26 Mar 2024 | REVIVE and THRIVE with proven BURNOUT BUSTERS EP99 | 00:31:09
Hey, Podsters! Today we are talking about a topic that hits close to home for many of us: BURNOUT. Now, before you roll your eyes and think, "I've heard it all before," you might want to stick around because you could be in the middle or approaching burnout, and thinking you’re just tired. Still doubtful? Would you be shocked if I told you nearly 50% of women reported experiencing burnout even BEFORE the pandemic? Here’s why I’m bringing this topic to you today and it’s still a little raw for me. A few weeks back, I hit a rough patch. Despite my usual “glass half full” optimism - I found myself feeling drained, unable to catch up on my energy and walking around with a consistent case of the blahs. Eventually I realized that I wasn’t simply tired or lacking vitamin D. I was burnt out. And if it happened to me, I know it's happening to others too. Now, burnout isn't just about feeling tired or overworked. It could show up for you as exhaustion, overwhelm, cynicism, lack of motivation, or detachment from the things that used to bring us joy. Perhaps all at the same time. Yikes. What many people like us don’t realize as we “power through” is that is left unaddressed, burnout can last weeks, months and even years. So buckle up - as it’s time to check yourself before you wreck yourself! The best way to deal with burnout is to avoid it in the first place and here are three things you can do now to avoid or bring f yourself out of this undesirable state of being.
So Podsters, if you're feeling the burn, know that you're not alone. With the right tools and support, you can overcome burnout and thrive once again. 19 Sep 2023 | Vulnerability EP68 | 00:30:24
Nancy’s Do The Thing Retreat On Cape Cod: **apply here.** Human connection has never been more important, Podsters and in this week’s episode we discuss the magic that happens when you let people see you for who you really are. On stage, in a meeting, with a client and even (or especially) at home. Vulnerability is the key to success in all areas of our lives, yet, we are often times afraid to be ourselves. All our lives we’ve been taught to fit in, to conform. Think about it – we start with a clean slate, a happy baby. Then we get to school and realize that the more we mold ourselves to other people’s expectations, the easier it is to be accepted. Then high school, remember the cliques? There’s a reason they’re called mean girls. Then for some of us, college. Sororities, clubs, more teachers, and trying to figure out where we fit in. Fitting in and being where you belong are very different. What if, instead of trying to fit in, we use that time and energy to find our people? Our fear of judgment hold us back. Adjusting to what we know will be accepted, rather than who we know we are. You will always be judged. This is a fact of life. And once you accept that you will be judged no matter what you do, you can enjoy the freedom to do what you are meant to do and be who you are meant to be. When you are vulnerable at work you can hone in on exactly what you want to do. When you are real and relatable, you will find the team, the career or business where you can leverage who you are, rather than try to fit the mold. You will see the holes in your business, the gap between what you’re doing and what you WANT to be doing, and this is where the magic happens! When you are vulnerable at home you get to build the relationships which honor the true you. You can be unfiltered, real and find the people who will love you at your best, and still love you at your worst. Maybe you have to learn this skill - or maybe you’re already there. Either way, this episode will reveal a few things you can do to take that chance, do the thing and live your truth! 11 Jun 2024 | Make the CHANGE before it CHANGES You! EP109 | 00:23:38
It’s June, Podsters and who else is here for summer? I am so here for summer. As you know, my summer word is “barefoot” and I’m coming in with a PSA for you… Every year, I have the same conversation in the spring or early summer. People want to make a move, they want to DO THE THING and the they say, "Let's circle back at the end of the summer." They want to enjoy their summer. I get it, I do. I love summer as much as you do, and if you’re in a toxic work environment, or you want to make THE BIG CHANGE, taking a break from thinking about it is a bad idea. If you're in a job or running a business that doesn’t feel good, you have got to take action, NOW. Here's why. When you take that break, summer becomes fall, and then it's back to school, busy budgets, travel, and trade shows. Then comes Thanksgiving, the holidays, and you wake up six months later still in that miserable job. You have to make a change before it changes you. The three lies I hear us going back to the most are: · "Summer is not a good time to focus" · "Summer is not a good for me to network" · "No one’s hiring in the summer." None of these are true. Summer is the perfect time to focus, network, and lay the groundwork for future opportunities. Take action now, and make a change before it changes you. You deserve the best because you are the best. Join the DO THE THING RETREAT BY CLICKING HERE Happy One Year Podiversary, Podsters. This is so exciting for us! Who knew when we started this podcast one year ago, we would end up in 40 countries and in the top 25%? WE DID THE THING! Why do so many people hold themselves back from doing the thing? Some wait for the right moment; you know, that morning they wake up and are struck by a lightning bolt. Others think about something for weeks or months until something or someone pushes them over the edge. Sadly, some people never DO THE THING and end up living in regret. There are many reasons why people don’t DO THE THING and at the top of that list is allowing other people's opinions to influence their actions. This impacts your ability to show up for yourself and will almost always spiral into self-doubt. What if we flip that switch from self-doubt to self-exploration? So Podsters, how do we go about taking charge and doing the thing? You’ve got to D.O. I.T.
DOING THE THING is not reserved for the lucky, the chosen or the “other people”. You have every right to DO THE THING and step into the life you know is waiting for your on the other side of your fears. 17 Oct 2023 | Chill Phase: How to Re-center, Regroup and Break Free from the Hustle EP72 | 00:22:38
“Chill phase”. This expression caught my attention recently, and I am Here. For. It. I’m not talking about self-care and I’m not talking about a few minutes of meditation each day (although both of these are highly recommended). What I’m talking about is allowing ourselves to listen to our bodies when they are telling us to slow down. Listening to our thoughts when they too are telling us to slow down. And most importantly, listening to our inner voice when it loudly and proudly is telling us to chill. This concept of seasons, peaks, and valleys, managing energy flows is not new. So why do we resist? So many of us forget to give ourselves real chill time – to do pretty much nothing and allow our minds to just wander. I believe we resist because we don’t believe we deserve this time. All our lives, being busy is a badge of honor. Being active and productive is admired. Taking time off feels selfish. This is our ego-talking Podsters, and perceiving rest or recovery as slacking off is costing us our physical and mental health. Not to mention true productivity. Do you think it’s a coincidence that your best ideas come to you when you’re in the middle of doing something mindless? My best idea of the day is my first idea of the day - oftentimes before I’m even out of bed. Because my brain has been given REST. It has rested and is now recovered. Personally, I've struggled with this - pushing through tough times and not allowing myself to chill out and I’ve seen first-hand that this can lead to burnout or breakdowns. Well, not today, Podsters! Last week I spent a quick 24 hours in Vermont unwinding and unplugging, and the clarity, confidence, and motivation that came roaring back to me is truly mind-blowing. As the holiday season approaches, let’s keep this expression “chill phase” top of our minds. Everything is temporary so take time when you need it, knowing that you’ll power back up again when you’re ready. Who’s with me? 25 Jul 2023 | Calm Down, AI is NOT coming for YOUR JOB! The ChatGPT Debate EP60 | 00:23:47
Attend Nancy’s DO THE THING RETREAT by CLICKING HERE Podsters, it's time to calm down and stop panicking about AI taking over your job! Is AI capable of fully replacing you? That's a BIG NO! Regardless of how you use AI, it is important to keep your unique voice and branding. AI cannot replace you or your creativity. There is no way to ask ChatGPT to write your content like "Nancy or Beth" would. The same applies to you. If you are still concerned about AI replacing your job, you should listen up. We're talking to you copywriters, bloggers, social media managers, and other jobs that require you to write copy, nothing will match the human ability to write content with emotion and your unique tone. This means you can stop worrying about being replaced. Since you don't have to worry about AI taking over your job, you need to think about how much time AI can save you. Despite appearing to save you time upfront, rewriting and editing may actually cost you more time. Alternatively, if you just copy and paste, you lose what makes you unique and no longer stand out from the crowd. In either case, AI can be more harmful than helpful. Think about the pros and cons of AI use, and make a decision based on your specific needs. AI has been around for a long time, "Alexa, turn down the music", and isn't going anywhere. We need to know how to use it in our lives and businesses and understand the potential risks of using AI. 16 Oct 2024 | From People-Pleaser to Power Player: Addressing Bad Behavior at Work EP126 | 00:32:26
Podsters, today we’re talking about the perils of being "overly agreeable" (a.k.a. people-pleasing) in leadership. We've all been there, right? That moment when you nod along in a meeting, even when your gut is screaming, "Seriously?!" It’s called being "overly agreeable" (a nicer way to say people-pleasing), and while it sounds harmless, it’s about as useful as a screen door on a submarine when it comes to stepping up as a leader. And this applies to everyone Podsters, whether you're running the show, climbing the ladder, or running your own business; bending over backward to keep everyone happy can cause more chaos than it cures. Spoiler alert: it's not your job to be everyone's emotional support person. So, what's a recovering people-pleaser to do? Here are three ways to kick the overly agreeable habit to the curb:
At the end of the day, leadership isn't about making everyone like you. It’s about creating a space where the work, and your team can thrive! 04 Jun 2024 | It's Okay to Not Be Okay! EP108 | 00:25:59
Today, I’m here to close the loop on something I’ve promised to discuss. For those of you who have been following along, you know I’ve been going through some stuff lately, and I said I’d come back to talk about it. So here I am, ready to share why it’s okay not to be okay and why we need to normalize it. When I was going through my rough patch, it was shocking how often people would ask how I was doing, and I’d automatically respond with, “I’m great, how are you?” even when I wasn’t. It felt so inauthentic, and that’s why I think we need to talk about it, not as a Debbie Downer, but to be honest and authentic and create genuine connections. It’s essential to recognize that it’s okay not to be okay. We all need help at some point, yet we often say we’re fine when we’re not. Over the past 12 weeks, I kept telling people I was fine when I wasn’t, and it felt like a narrator in my head said, “She was not indeed fine.” every time I said those words, “I’m okay”. No one wants to dump their problems on a casual acquaintance, but with close ones, we should be truthful. It’s important to admit when we’re struggling, both to ourselves and to our loved ones. By pretending to be okay, we miss opportunities for genuine connection and support. When we say we’re fine when we’re not, we shame ourselves unnecessarily. I learned that lesson the hard way, feeling like I had always to be great. I wasn’t being authentic, and it took a toll on me. It’s essential to be honest and seek help when needed. Podsters, let’s normalize not being okay. If someone asks how you are, be honest. You don’t have to explain everything, but you can say, “I’ve been better.” Let’s be real with ourselves and each other. It’s okay not to be okay; acknowledging that is a step towards healing. 18 Jun 2024 | Leveraging LinkedIn – Three Quick Branding Tips to Amplify Your LinkedIn Profile this Summer and Set Yourself Up for Fall with Miranda Von Fricken EP110 | 00:41:49
Summer is here, Podsters! No one loves summer more than I do and as a follow up to last week’s episode, we're diving into how you can make the most of your summer- at work AND at home. Today we are talking about the “wait until I’m more focused” approach and how this will always lead you back to bring one of the herd. We won’t do that around here at Unmute Yourself the Podcast so today I’ve brought in THE leading authority on LinkedIn and global branding expert – Miranda Von Fricken. This Queen of Cool is walking us through three immediate and actionable steps you can take this summer so that you don’t wake up in September and say “oops, should have started sooner”. Miranda lives and breathes LinkedIn and today is not about giving you corporate tips and tricks- today is about showing YOU how you are showing up personally, in the professional world. Many people come to me in May, saying they want to work on their career or business but will wait until after summer. This makes Miranda and me twitch! So, I invited Miranda today to spill the tea on three things you can do to optimize your LinkedIn profile this summer and trust me, these tips are golden nuggets. Whether you’re looking to level up your career or turn your side hustle into a full-time job, now is the time to act. Here's why waiting is a bad idea: to stand out in a crowded market, you need to do what others aren’t doing. When people take breaks, like in the summer, you double down. You can still enjoy your summer while being intentional about your efforts on LinkedIn. As Miranda says, "If you're not on LinkedIn, what are you even doing?" Miranda also just released an incredible book called "Own Your Awesome on LinkedIn: There Are One Billion Members, But Only One You." For those who think LinkedIn is overrated, this book is for you. A few strategic actions can make a big difference in your networking efforts. So, Podsters, let’s not wait! Start optimizing your LinkedIn profile now and get ahead of the game. When you think about consumption, most of the time you think of food. Would you eat a plate of nachos if you knew you had to run a 5k later that day? Probably not, so let’s apply this principle to what we are consuming in our BRAIN. What do you do when you want to get physically fit or ensure your body is performing at its peak? You make strategic decisions about how to fuel your body. You pay attention to what you are consuming. We need to look at the same strategy when it comes to the things we invite into our minds. Why do we sometimes scroll through a news feed that does not serve our highest good? Why do we continue conversations that suck the life out of us? We KNOW energy vampires drain our minds of all energy, so why do we invite them into our lives? Think about the billions of pieces of data you are “ingesting” daily. Are these creating thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that are serving you? Social Media: Your social media feed is meant to be informative and entertaining, so why follow a cringey influencer or that family member who makes you feel less than others? Why keep seeing the same triggering content? Try “unfollow Friday” to clear out the old and make room for the new. People: The people you surround yourself with WILL influence your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, so let’s make sure your circle is bringing you joy. Although we might not have control over every energy vampire interaction, we can make a conscious choice to change the situation in which we have to engage with the person. You CAN feel inspired every day, and YOU get to decide what gets your precious energy. It's time to set boundaries around what and how we consume. Who’s with me?
30 Jan 2024 | Slay, Don't Sleaze: Mastering the Art of Forensic Networking EP91 | 00:28:21
It’s officially the witching hour! Here what I mean by this: Every year around this time people start leaving their job in droves. In fact, I’ve had not one, not two, but three people contact me this past week to tell me their news. They’ve had enough. They can’t take it any more and they’re experiencing the classic "take this job and shove it" moment. Anyone familiar with that song? In each of these cases- while I’m thrilled that they have made this life changing decision - I know how hard it’s going to be for them. I know because the #1 thing you can do to soften the landing when you make that long awaited exit - is to put the time in beforehand to work your network. Now before you start cringing or get that pit in your stomach, I’m going to ask you to trust me here. There is an art to networking, a word that often triggers people, especially our Podster introverts. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: NETWORKING DOES NOT HAVE TO FEEL GROSS. It’s not about schmoozing with a glass of wine at a party. It’s not about playing golf or back-slapping with the patriarchy. You CAN network like a ninja and this CAN be fun. When you take my forensic networking approach: strategically assess your network, nurture your relationships NOW rather than when you have an ask, take your time and ditch the spaghetti approach - when you do it this way: you will be locked and loaded with solid leads before you make that country western song your reality. And… before you start feeling awkward about asking for help, remember what it feels like when someone asks you for to help them on their career journey. I’ll bet you’re flattered and eager to assist because we are wired to genuinely like helping others. Here’s why laying this foundation BEFORE you leap is so important. And I’m speaking to corporate and entrepreneurs both here. Often times, decisions about who to hire are made before you even step into the room. Networking strategically ensures you're already in the mix when opportunities arise and being a known entity ahead of time? GAME CHANGER. So how do you start this networking thing without it feeling gross? As I look back on my career, I'm so grateful for those who stood by me through the highs and lows. My Personal Board of Directors who supported me, gave it to me straight, helped me course correct and celebrated the big wins. We talk about how to nurture and recruit your Personal Board of Directors on today’s episode, too! Wishing you an amazing week and continued success. Peace out, podsters! Let’s harness this motivation and DO THE THING together! I’m still accepting applications for my one one-on-one private coaching. Apply here, and you’re DONE by spring! 09 Oct 2024 | The Feedback Formula: Grow, Glow, and Let the Rest Go EP125 | 00:21:48
Hey, Podsters! Have you heard the expression, “Feedback is a gift”? Sure, sometimes feedback shows up at our door as a beautifully wrapped present, but other times... It's more like an unsolicited mystery package that leaves you scratching your head about the sender. People love to give feedback—partners, clients, bosses, even random strangers. And while a lot of it is super helpful, let’s be real: not all feedback comes from a place of positive intent. So, how do you figure out which advice to embrace and which to toss straight into the metaphorical trash? Today, we’re unpacking how to process feedback without letting it impact your mental health. The key? Understand where the feedback is coming from. First, assess the other person’s values, intent, and perspective. Are they offering insights to support your growth? Or are they projecting their stuff onto you? Because heads up, not all feedback is about you. I’ll share some personal stories today—including one from my early leadership days that seriously shifted my career trajectory. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t always comfortable with not knowing all the answers, but one piece of advice helped me embrace the leader I am today. It’s not about growing thicker skin. Nope. It’s about learning how to process feedback without giving it too much headspace. You’ve got to filter feedback as data points—some are valuable, and others are not so much. So buckle up, Podsters! Let’s dive into how you can use feedback like a boss, stay true to yourself, and grow into the best version of yourself—without letting the noise slow you down. 24 Oct 2023 | Change the Conversation, Change Your Life: Words Matter on the Path to Living Your Truth EP73 | 00:22:13
Unmute Yourself and own the room with a monthly dose of inspiration and actionable tools in my Confidence Community. Words matter. You know it and I know it. It’s time to talk about HOW MUCH the words you choose, the thoughts you have (and can control, by the way) and the way you speak impacts the life you live. Don Draper said it best back in the Mad Men era… "If you don't like what's being said, change the conversation." I just returned from delivering a keynote speech to a group of inspiring women who are thriving in an under-represented industry. When they approached me to come speak, they asked me to talk about working in a male-dominated industry. I was thrilled to come back and speak again to this powerhouse group, and I had only one request. Stop using the term “male-dominated”. Why would we ever voluntarily use a term that lends power to being dominated? If you are already talking like you are subservient, how can you expect your mind to support NOT being deferential or subservient? Why would we voluntarily use a term that is triggering to so many of us? Why not change the conversation? So, we did. We talked about perceptions, how we speak to each other, our families, and most important, how we speak to ourselves. We talked about how our thoughts are the driving force behind our lives and how we can use our thoughts and confirmation bias to engineer the life we truly want. Are you I'm overwhelmed or are you overextended? One is a feeling, the other is a fact. Instead of “I can't afford it" how about "It's not a priority right now." Take back your power. Here’s my challenge for you, Podsters for this week. Think about a phrase you’re been using that’s not serving your highest vision for you, your career, or your life. How can you change the conversation?

23 Dec 2024 | New Year's Day Intention - Set Yourself Up for Success in 2025 EP136 | 00:10:54
Podsters, it’s Christmas week, so happy holidays, happy new year, happy whatever you celebrate! With New Years Day right around the corner, I want to talk about how you’re bringing in the new year, specifically what you’re doing on January 1st. Last year, I threw a big New Year’s Day party, and this whole year ended up being way more non-stop than I wanted. So this time, I’m switching it up: I signed up for a two-hour yoga workshop on January 1st. I kept resisting it, fearing something else might come along, but I decided to commit. For me, it’s about choosing ease over constant action, so I can head into 2025 with more balance. Maybe you want to host a brunch, run a 5K, or just relax on the couch. Whatever it is, I’m suggesting you think about how your New Year’s Day plans could set the tone for the entire year. Let’s be intentional about it. Make sure you do something that aligns with the vibe you want for 2025. That’s my wish for you, Podsters. 17 Jan 2023 | Success Mapping | 00:27:24
It's 2023! So, what do you want? What's your MORE? Get clear on what these mean TO YOU and what you will do to go get it. Your wants are not dreaming so let's call them what they are – VISIONS. Dreams can end up driving self-sabotage - things that maybe you'll have someday if you win the lottery. As in...not likely. Remember - words matter. We encourage action instead of passive thoughts. When you act AS IF, you behave AS I, you believe AS IF and that's where the magic happens. Mel Robbins talks about this as well - and you know we love our Mel. What steps are you actually taking to move toward that vision? Meditation, praying, and journaling are all good, when combined with ACTUAL STEPS to get you closer to your vision. Claim your vision by saying it out loud, saying it "as if" (because it's only a matter of time), committing to a date, and being specific. As always, we want to hear your thoughts. Do you have another successful way to achieve your visions? Share it with us and we'll share it with our listeners! You can leave us a message by on our podcast website or hit us up on the socials! 13 Nov 2024 | The Glass Cliff: Is It a Step Up or a Set Up? EP130 | 00:21:59
Podsters, let’s get real: ever notice how women leaders often get handed the wheel just as the ship is sinking? Every time we see a woman being tapped to lead during a crisis, it’s like, “She’s got this! She’ll turn it around!” But here’s the thing—are they set up to succeed or just positioned for scrutiny? Today, we’re diving into the phenomenon of the “glass cliff.” Unlike the glass ceiling that keeps women from reaching leadership, the glass cliff is when women finally do get those top roles…but often in times of major crisis, where the odds are stacked against them. Think of Marissa Mayer at Yahoo, Linda Yaccarino at X, or even Kamala Harris navigating national chaos. These are smart, talented women—so why do they so often get handed a mess to clean up? We’re unpacking why this happens and, most importantly, what you can do if you find yourself in a glass cliff situation. Here are three crucial questions to ask before taking on any role that feels a little too high-stakes:
Remember to listen to that inner voice, too. If the role doesn’t feel right, trust yourself. Just because you’re offered a high-profile role doesn’t mean you have to take it, especially if it seems more like a setup than an opportunity. So buckle up, Podsters! We’re digging into the glass cliff—how to spot it, navigate it, and protect yourself while still seizing the career you deserve. CLICK HERE TO JOIN the November 15th 8:30 AM EST CLICK HERE TO JOIN the November 15th 12:30 PM EST Hey, Podsters! We are back, and we are all about boundaries this week! Right in time for Thanksgiving... I am beyond thrilled to welcome back the amazing Barb Nangle; Boundary Boss, for today’s episode and buckle up, Podsters because we are diving head first into ALL THINGS BOUNDARIES. Such as: Why boundaries are so important any time, and specifically during the holiday season. As you know, boundaries have been a game-changer for me, and when Barb was here last time – I could not keep up with your incredible feedback. So, I invited her back, and together we are hosting a Boundary Bootcamp next week. That’s right – if you find yourself wanting more after listening today, or if you already KNOW you want more – we are setting you up to replace that holiday fear with holiday cheer. Why are we doing this? Well, setting boundaries, especially during the holidays, can be challenging. Today we unpack why people find it so hard to establish limits. Guilt, shame, family expectations—these are the ongoing boundary struggles. And, bonus! We share our own personal experiences when establishing boundaries, including Barb's huge realization during her 12-step recovery journey. She discovered that setting boundaries isn't about controlling others, as changing someone else is beyond your control. Boundaries are about establishing how YOU will live. What YOU will accept and how you will communicate what is and is not ok. That responsibility lies with you. Did you know it’s okay to completely opt out of family gatherings? And, you can set a time limit on how willing you are to participate in the gathering. Here’s the thing: YOU get to decide what is best for you. In this episode we have a brief role play where I get to challenge Barb as our most difficult relative might also do…and she handles it like a BOSS. Amazing. Am I right? The holidays are a time when many of us feel obligated to let go of our own boundaries for fear of what other people will think and feel. If this sounds like you – here’s one thing you can do to make this easier. Be quick and be kind with your boundaries; be polite, and offer alternatives when “NO” is not an option. The key thing we want you to remember here is to focus on yourself. It’s okay to seek approval and let’s also ensure you are approving of how you live YOUR life first. Boundaries are about self-love, not controlling others. So, if you're navigating the holiday chaos, join us on November 15th for the Boundary Bootcamp. It's time to reclaim your holidays, Podsters!

28 Feb 2023 | Recession-Proof Your Career & Double Down On Your VALUE | 00:29:03
All indicators are pointing to a massive recession with record numbers of layoffs already happening. The simple truth is, no one really knows. The simpler truth is...those of us who know our value and own our worth aren't too concerned about projections, pundits and scary news headlines. We know that these are the times when legends are made. These downturns in fact are when those of us at the top of our game can make the greatest impact. “Save six months salary for when we experience a downturn” is not a proactive strategy. Pressure makes diamonds and if it was easy everyone would be doing it. Stay close to your customer, stay close to your ideal client and do what it is that only you can do.
