09 Dec 2022The 3 key functions of marrying packaging well with products00:27:43

INTRODUCTION

How should packaging go along with a product at best while answering a real need?

Packaging these days is sometimes the scapegoat that makes us forget that the product inside has the biggest part in environmental and social impact!

And, sometimes, the product content is actually like the warriors in the mythological Trojan horse: We only see the container without paying attention to what it carries on!

In this episode, I illustrate the 3 packaging’s reasons for being with what our last 6 guests are experiencing on the field.

So, you will hear from them about

  • Physical protection,
  • Communication,
  • and User experience

Enjoy the preparation of a good marriage between packaging and products!

WHERE TO FIND CECILE FORGUE?

ABOUT Cécile Forgue from ALPES CONSIGNE

With her academic background as an engineer and her personal goal to reduce packaging waste, Cécile Forgue decided in 2019 to work on developing a reuse system, convinced that glass packaging can have a much better impact on the environment than currently with the recycling system they have in France. Therefore she joined a citizen movement around this topic and co-founded ALPES CONSIGNE in 2020. She is now really glad to see the reuse system grow and to notice that even eco-organisms seem to get into working order to make reuse a reality and the norms for the upcoming years. Packaging reuse has become a reality in the past few years in France and has beautiful days forward.

09 Dec 2021How can branding add value to your journey to sustainability?00:40:53

INTRODUCTION

Did you know that the design stage determines 80% of a product’s environmental impact and costs? What if a creative agency would help your transformation at the branding level, which definitely has something to do with design?

With Hélène Piette, we spoke about how Dragon Rouge London can add value to your brand and your journey to sustainability. They work with companies such as the Coca Cola Company, Essity, the Hero Group, Mondelez, and Danone, to name a few.

In this episode,

  • You will learn at what phase it is the most relevant to start the conversation about how your product is going to be packaged in order to bring more positive impact.
  • We also talked about the aftereffects of small little changes in design like openings, color, and information on and about packaging.
  • Be ready to discover inspiring examples of big companies to picture some packaging issues and solutions.

I enjoyed this conversation highlighting the necessary knowledge, education, and expertise to make shifts internally and externally to the end consumer. All this, in the respect of where the companies are in their sustainable journey and in the strongness of their identity!

20 Jan 2022Segmenting 7 motivations to better reach your market00:44:15

INTRODUCTION

Knowing how could react customers in front of your products and packaging is very valuable. So the main question is: Do you really know what motivates the choices of your customers?

Our guest, Lindsey Boyle is sharing 7 main motivations from a recent and actionable study. This remarkable approach – from a Finnish and Canadian collaboration – activates opportunities for marketing strategy, targeting, communication, and innovation.

In this episode,

  • you will learn diverse WHYs behind customers’ actions,
  • you will understand what motivation segmentation enables compared to persona,
  • and you will even visualize the main factors influencing decision-making.

I enjoy how Lindsey made data and definition humanly alive and with a lot of advice about how to adapt messages on packaging.

Here is a little spoiler alert: Making sustainable choices is not always motivated by ecological preoccupation. So, ask yourself to which motivation you mostly identify yourself, as well as your main customers.

ABOUT LINDSEY BOYLE FROM CIRCULAR CITIZEN

Lindsey is passionate about business that supports people’s well-being and regenerates nature. Working at the intersection of the climate emergency and the circular economy, Lindsey has a 20-year career as a strategist for brands like Google, Whole Foods, and The North Face, and now creates insight into target audience’s needs and motivations to help make 'circular' choices mainstream.

Lindsey's most recent work was as Lead for OneEarth's www.oneearthweb.org/motivations project, which is a segmentation that has revealed 7 ‘Lighter Living’ dominant motivations driving choices for the BC population. Lindsey recently shared this insight at the World Circular Economy Forum 2021.

27 Oct 2022The impact of eye-catching packaging design as well as hidden structural design00:56:34

INTRODUCTION

Are you wondering how to couple a sustainable packaging design with a memorable user experience?

With Evelio Mattos, a well-recognized structural designer, you will have a good overview of the ins and outs of packaging concept development.

We navigated the conversation from very visible branding to behind the scene systems. Yes, huge ripple effects can happen through packaging in the spotlight (with big brands and the luxury industry), as well as through the tremendous impact of tertiary packaging!

I liked how Evelio brought packaging design to highlight how much packaging impact happens before, during, and after the product gets to consumers!

Of course, you will hear a lot of examples from Evelio’s experience but from his interviewees too because Evelio Mattos is also the host of the Packaging Unboxd podcast. I encourage you to unbox even more packaging designs by following him.

26 Nov 2024From single-use to reuse: How eco-design is shaping the future of food packaging01:08:30

INTRODUCTION

No, reusables are not just single-use items with a QR code slapped on to encourage reuse! True reusability starts with intentional design right from the beginning.

That’s exactly why it’s so valuable to learn from Annie Legroulx, Director of Innovation at Cambium, based in Montréal. With her expertise in designing and distributing eco-friendly takeout solutions, she has firsthand experience navigating the challenges of transitioning from single-use to reuse systems.

In this episode, we’ll explore:

  • Why eco-design must balance standardization with adaptability for different food applications.
  • How a local supplier can play a key role in overcoming challenges such as condensation, traceability, and procurement hurdles.
  • And what a well-thought-out end-of-life approach should involve, whether your packaging is recyclable or compostable.

I admire Annie’s dedication to collaborating with diverse stakeholders to address real-world needs. Her pragmatic and grounded view of reuse—as part of a necessary transition that still leaves room for certain single-use applications—feels refreshingly practical and actionable.

29 Sep 2023The single-use plastic legislation: Is ban starting a shifting conversation?00:32:31

INTRODUCTION

If you have been in contact with single-use plastic items, and even use some of them along your value chain, this episode is for you!

Today’s textbook case is none other than the single-use plastic legislation!

Boring? Not at all if you sharpen your pencils well, now that the schools go back after summer. Let’s come back together with sensitive rules and critical thinking to be able to read between the lines!

How will we do that in this episode? Be ready to learn,

  • first, about the important role of legislation countering the inaction triangle,
  • secondly, about the worldwide context of this single-use plastic legislation,
  • and finally, about the 3 reasons why you shouldn’t make single-use plastic bans your new hobby horse… with a Canadian regulation as an exemplifying case study. The 3 points are:
    1. What are we talking about?
    2. Where does it happen?
    3. What if we shift the conversation to solutions?

The ice on the cake? As a revision sheet, you will have some past referral episodes and a promo code for our “Develop Circular Packaging Solutions” online training… that might be helpful to set off decision processes to address those kinds of legislation and take the lead!

04 Nov 2021What does it entail to tackle plastic packaging as a large supermarket chain?00:43:48

INTRODUCTION

When a big supermarket chain changes something, it has a huge impact! That’s why I interviewed Charlotte De Vroey, the Sustainability Manager at Delhaize Belgium.

Charlotte shared what is behind their Lion’s Footprint initiative: less plastic, less CO2, and less food waste. Do you know why they are focused on ‘less’ instead of ‘more’? Do you wonder how they tackle the interlinked challenges of packaging and food waste? Are you curious about what is laser printing?

I really liked how Delhaize is involving its multiple stakeholders in its vision. Nobody is put on the side: we talked about investors, buyers, colleagues, suppliers, and even regulators!

If you are selling or buying products from big grocery stores, would you want to be part of this journey?

ABOUT CHARLOTTE DE VROEY FROM DELHAIZE BELGIUM

With almost 15 years of experience in sustainability, Charlotte De Vroey leads the sustainability team at Delhaize (a chain of 800 food supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg). Her focus is to propose healthy food and to maintain a healthy planet.

Before, she worked in making product supply chain more sustainable thanks to certification.

She studied economics, ethics, and more recently, sustainable supply chains at the Cambridge University for Sustainability Leadership.

WHERE TO FIND CHARLOTTE AND DELHAIZE BELGIUM

LITTLE NOTES

In order to offset its own emissions that Delhaize cannot completely eliminate, it has created - in collaboration with major suppliers such as Unilever, Mondelez, and Henkel - the Lion's Footprint Fund, which supports ecological projects managed by the King Baudouin Foundation. RiverCleanup was one of the initiatives supported which has a link with packaging.

25 Jul 2024Reduce, Reuse, Refill: Paris's Journey to a Zero Single-Use Plastic Future – Bold Moves for the Olympics?00:50:03

INTRODUCTION

What actions can a city like Paris take to eliminate single-use plastic? How do urban economic actors become key players in reduce, reuse, and refill initiatives? And could the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics serve as an extra motivation?

Join us as Justine Laurent, Managing Director of Circulab, explains the operational and relational support necessary for such transformative changes.

Get ready to be inspired by global strategies and numerous examples, such as free-water fountains, collaborations with reuse initiatives, and incentives and certifications for economic players to help reshape our cities and villages by significantly reducing plastic use!

Before we delve into the ongoing changes with our guest, I can’t resist sharing some freshly revealed data with you.

  • Did you know that thanks to its zero single-use plastic ambition, Paris avoided 41 tonnes of plastic – the equivalent of 2.5 Parisian buses – in 2023?
  • Did you know that more than 1,000 shops display a sticker indicating that anyone can freely fill their water bottle from their tap?
  • And finally, did you know that – for the first time and due to its determination to make a difference – Paris secured around 200 soda fountains instead of bottles from the historic partner of the Games for the main festivities?

Curious to know how all this became possible? This episode is for you!

01 Oct 2024No more waste and toxicity: Unlocking value in sustainable materials and manufacturing.01:24:01

INTRODUCTION

If you’ve ever asked yourself any of the following three questions, then this episode is for you!

  • How can you eliminate toxicity and waste from your facilities and products?
  • How can you uncover value and opportunities in the threats and challenges you face, from material extraction and processing to disposal?
  • What do you still need to learn to truly embrace a shift toward a more circular economy?

We’re diving into these questions with my guest, Paul Foulkes-Arellano, co-author of the book Materials & Sustainability: Building A Circular Future. If books open windows to the world, then let’s leaf through one that reveals a new view of sustainable materials and manufacturing.

Together,

  • we unpacked the meaning of sustainability ;
  • we compared terms like virgin materials vs. waste materials, procurement vs. management, carbon emissions vs. water crisis, and many others that shed light on crucial issues ;
  • and we brought fresh perspectives, even starting with some thought-provoking quotes.

As you’ll see, we approached this content with the playful curiosity of children jumping into a pile of colorful leaves, leaving you to grab the one idea that resonates most.

10 Mar 2022Sustainable packaging through the lens of the SHIFT marketing framework _ Part 1/200:44:04

INTRODUCTION

Is your packaging taking an active part in circular solutions? Are you struggling in getting people to adopt sustainable behaviour? What should your marketing look like to motivate your customers to properly reuse, recycle, or compost?

In this episode, we have two experts, Kate and Rosemary, who will lead you through the knowledge and methodology summarized by the SHIFT framework.

Each letter represents a key marketing factor to shift behaviour in more eco-conscious directions. In this episode, we will cover the 3 first ones, the S, H, and I:

  • Social Influence,
  • Habit Formation,
  • and Individual self.

In the next episode, you will explore the F and T:

  • Feelings and Cognition,
  • and Tangibility.

All this content was born as a UBC Sauder School of Business academic report for SITRA, to become a workbook, until it was developed into a very supportive and practical program with Share Reuse Repair Initiative.

I liked how Kate and Rosemary played with their complementarity to bring extra thought about packaging.

So, ready to learn

  • how to get a more evidence-based understanding of your market,
  • and how to set up different clear messages?

25 Nov 2021When cups initiate a reusable ecosystem to take the waste out of takeout00:53:10

INTRODUCTION

What if it was easy to take single-use out of takeout thanks to reusables?

Today, you will hear about ShareWares, a platform where numerous "wares" are borrowed, sanitized, and reused (cups, but also other containers to come). For whom? For numerous industries such as cafes, restaurants, and events, but also cultural places and various markets.

With Cody, its founder and CEO, we spoke about the journey of his company and when tech and regulation ease the adoption of reusables.

Be also ready to learn what does it take for

  • a circular cup design,
  • a good return rate,
  • and a dreaming sustainable logistic system.

Not to mention his testimonial about getting local stuff versus overseas.

Don’t miss his final burning question: I am pretty sure it will nourish your own packaging consideration.

ABOUT CODY IRWIN FROM SHAREWARES

Cody was born on a remote farm in Manitoba, spent most of his youth in uptown Toronto, and studied mechanical engineering at McGill University before moving to beautiful British Columbia. He has a strong connection and love for nature, as well as a powerful draw to technology and innovation.

For the last decade he has called Vancouver home, where he started his first venture in corporate food service for technology companies. Over 10 years he grew Natural Source into the local industry leader, at which point the pandemic almost completely wiped it out when offices closed. As devastating as this was, it was actually an amazing opportunity. With the government's relief support and by repurposing his company's resources, he was able to build ShareWares which has massive environmental, economic, and social impact potential at a global scale.

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wondered if the environmental claims or logos on your packaging were completely legit and adequate? Did you dive into it?

Welcome to our new series: “Certifications Spotlight: Truths and Traps”!

We'll unravel the mysteries behind the logos, certifications, and declarations you find on packaging.

  • What do they really mean?
  • When and where are they applied?
  • Do they sometimes conceal key information?

We'll weigh their pros and cons and explore the added value for everyone in the value chain, including end consumers.

This series is the result of collaborations with experts who joined us with enthusiasm.

Whether you're in the packaging or packaged goods industry, these episodes aim to equip you with knowledge and critical thinking to decipher what is too often put forward as foolproof guarantees.

30 Mar 2023Creating compostable packaging that emulates conventional plastic properties00:54:24

INTRODUCTION

Is it possible to meet the same performance standards as conventional plastic while not harming the environment? I mean no toxic residue, microplastics, or other pollutants.

This is the challenge that TIPA – a multi-awarded company – is taking up while making compostable flexible single-use packaging!

The aim of their packaging is to have the same end-of-life as organic material.

In this episode, Mark Camner makes you discover

  • why TIPA is focusing on two main segments: food and fashion industries that are organic, premium, and luxury;
  • why they care so much about relocalization of the whole Value Chain, including production;
  • and how they accompany transition with a certified plug-and-play solution in North America and Europe.

Like me, you will certainly find it interesting how Mark combines pragmatism and storytelling to talk about the new generation of single-use packaging.

LITTLE NOTES

About sorting garbage in festivals, Colienne mentioned the work of Liliana from Green Chair (throughout Metro Vancouver in Canada)  https://www.greenchairrecycling.com/aboutus/.

When Samuel shared with us that, for now, each Belgian generates around 1.5 kg of garbage per day, he mentioned that it might be different in Canada. Yes, it is! Colienne Regout (the host of Unboxing Your Packaging) was talking about the 2.7 kg generated by Canadians in the Circulab podcast where she was the guest that time: https://circulab.com/podcast/how-is-canadian-sustainability-awareness-seen-through-a-european-lens/ (the big question about waste starts at 13:45 min but we suggest listening to the whole interview).

Ecocup is the company LaSemo works with so far for reusable cups and plates: https://ecocup.com/.

About accessories, Colienne mentioned the start-up Nyoka, the creators of Lumi, the world's first earth-friendly glow stick, powered with bioluminescence and healing for the Earth: https://www.lightbynyoka.com/news/tag/eco+friendly+glow+stick

02 Mar 2023The bulk: How to free products and consumers from the packaging?01:03:13

INTRODUCTION

Did you know that March is the month of bulk?

To understand better what packaging-free is about in daily life for businesses and all stakeholders – including you and me – I invited 2 committed actors in the bulk world:

  • Célia, the founder of Réseau Vrac, the Bulk Network federating more than 1500 professionals in the sector – such as suppliers and retailers – in 14 countries,
  • and Elsa, the co-founder of Yokoumi, a cosmetic brand working with more than 200 refill points of sale.

In this episode, you will learn

  • how reusable packaging and bulk are bonded,
  • how being part of a supportive network can enhance safety, logistic efficiency, and scaling,
  • and how products and people are at the core of the bulk system.

I hope that after this interview, you will be motivated to try bulk out, for yourself as well as for your business!

I enjoyed how Elsa and Célia paired their respective experiences and zoomed in and out about the bulk subject.

The ice on the cake? If you are in Europe, meet our guests at the annual «Packaging-Free Trade Fair» on the 14th and 15th of May 2023. It could be the starting point for determining collaborations!

22 Oct 2021A low-tech deposit system to expand zero-waste food businesses00:47:27

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever thought about how to make a zero-waste lifestyle easier for yourself or for your food business? With her standardized containers and her low-tech deposit system, Marie has figured that out!

She created L’Empoteuse covering 3 business models in 1. At one point or another, you are part of this!

I loved how she shared with ease and humor her advanced market research, her challenges, and her quest for the best impactful solution. Be ready to learn about

  • the importance of labels,
  • a bunch of numbers demonstrating at what conditions glass jars are eco-friendly,
  • and the cleaning process and distribution logistics… and some dreams about it!

ABOUT MARIE JEMINE FROM L’EMPOTEUSE

Marie Jemine is an entrepreneur committed to zero waste. She studied translation and worked as a Supply Chain Manager for a few years before she had her baby.

Then when he was born, she realized very suddenly that he might never make it out of college or get married, due to climate change. The IPCC reports became reality when she transposed the dates on her child's timeline, and it became urgent for her to take action.

She started reducing her waste and carbon footprint, and it became clear to her that, no matter how seducing and fulfilling was the zero-waste lifestyle, preparing food containers every morning was quite challenging for two parents working full time.

Somehow, she had to come up with a system that would make the food containers appear in the shop or restaurant when she had forgotten them. And that's how she created l'Empoteuse, a zero-waste packaging solution for food businesses in Belgium. It is addressed to restaurants, zero-waste and organic grocery stores, and local producers. Today, L’Empoteuse continues to expand in Belgium.

WHERE TO FIND MARIE AND L’EMPOTEUSE

MARIE'S RECOMMENDED RESOURCE FOR YOU, OUR AUDIENCE

24 Mar 2022Sustainable packaging through the lens of the SHIFT marketing framework _ Part 2/200:27:58

INTRODUCTION

If you are wondering how to shape messaging that aligns people's actions with the sustainable impact you are building, you are at the right place! Yes, this episode will help you to find the right marketing argument that resonates with your consumers!

This episode follows on from episode 18 with Rosemary Cooper and Kate White. If you haven’t done it yet, listen to it!

As Kate and Rosemary explained it, it is a lot about

  • overcoming the say-do gap
  • taking a step by step approach to building an evidence-based marketing
  • and testing!

We already discussed 3 of the 5 SHIFT factors as key drivers of eco-conscious behavior. Let me give you a brief summary of the SHI of the SHIFT acronym:

  • The S, Social Influence is about making a behavior seem socially desirable in some way, or more commonly engaged in by peers. I really liked the tips Kate gave to avoid backfire effects on this one.
  • The H,  Habit Formation is when sustainable choices become part of daily routines. About this subject, Rosemary gave us a very enlightening example about a haha moment of a start-up participating in the SHIFT program.
  • The I, the Individual Self brings the question of how to appeal to what deeply drives individuals. This factor is very related to the different motivations shared in episode 15.

I liked how Kate and Rosemary took brilliantly the challenge to put their knowledge in perspective for packaging issues. Just as a reminder: Kate is an academic researcher in marketing and behavioral science and Rosemary works on implementing collaboratively circular business solutions. And they work hand in hand for a SHIFTing Consumer Behaviour program.

In the following episode, you will learn:

  • how to use emotions and concrete analogies fitting best your offer
  • what is desirable for the future of reusable and single-use packaging
  • and how to activate the SHIFT framework

This was a dynamic conversation. And I hope that our laugh will keep your enthusiasm until the very end of this episode… because I will reveal how you can win a nice reward by participating in a contest with a very simple action.

Now, let’s make room for the F and T of the SHIFT acronym:

  • T for tangibility
  • and F for Feelings and Cognition

At the end of the previous episode, Rosemary mentioned the sensitivity of people for storytelling while others will look for numbers and facts.

RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE:

(see this link since I can’t share a picture on the podcast platforms: https://trashisfortossers.com/the-package-free-difference/

What happens next?

27 Apr 2023What does milk protein have to do with plastic-free polymer?00:42:25

INTRODUCTION

When companies are aiming for plastic-free, they would like an alternative having the exact same properties as conventional plastics while meeting all the best end-of-life scenarios. Are they dreaming awake? Could bioplastic packaging be both recyclable and properly biodegradable in all types of environments?

You probably already have heard about plant-based materials but what about the milk protein, called casein?

Well, that’s perfect timing to learn more about a very innovative material from Lactips.

In this episode, Flavie explains

  • what are their natural polymer pellets,
  • how their solubility fits recyclability as well as compostability, and even reusability,
  • and how education supports adequate transition for the end-users and the industries.

I liked her joyful spirit and her focus on «dedicated solutions for dedicated applications».

15 Dec 2023From single-use to reuse: Shaping the era of refillable packaging, starting with personal care products01:15:59

INTRODUCTION

Imagine if competitive brands collectively adopted multi-use and standardized packaging.

Imagine products exclusively housed in reusable packaging displayed on every retailer's shelf.

Now, envision a seamless system where customers can return these refillable containers, ensuring their circulation for many years to come!

Well, this is already happening with pioneers like Jo-Anne Chidley, the co-founder of Beauty Kitchen, a sustainable, natural personal care brand, and Reposit, a packaging-as-a-service platform.

She shares a wealth of advice drawn from her experience in this episode! Get ready to learn about:

  • How certifications like Cradle-to-Cradle and B-Corp serve as excellent guidelines for improvement (as her company broke records in the European cosmetic industry).
  • The significance of values such as partnerships, collaborations, and community in fortifying a reuse business model.
  • The paramount importance of modularity in constructing long-term, viable solutions (illustrated using the example of washing infrastructure).
  • Measurements to better disrupt single-use and plastic packaging, with some key environmental and sales impacts!

I admire how Jo is defeating preconceived ideas, and how she is opening revolutionary horizons for reuse!

Here's my two cents if you get the chance to meet her: Don’t say no to Jo! Instead, inquire "How?" and be ready to roll up your sleeves!

Little notes

1) About organics recovery processes mentioned:

The end product of the ‘Anaerobic Digestion’ is biogas and anaerobic sludge which is different from the ‘Industrial Compost’ creating a medium to high-quality compost. These two processes are managed by municipalities and private companies in Canada and work under well-managed temperature and moisture.

While ‘Home Compost’ usually produces compost in a variable environment managed by individuals.
