15 Dec 2023Should faith and politics mix? | Peter Wehner, Jonathan Rauch with Vince Vitale01:14:17
Vince Vitale hosts this timely discussion around faith and politics, with Pete Wehner, journalist and senior fellow at Trinity Forum and Jonathan Rauch who is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute. The topic is Should faith and politics mix? How can we take the fear out of politics and make it transcendent rather than transactional? Atheist Jonathan Rauch is an expert in governance studies and the author of eight books and many articles on public policy, culture, and government. He is also a contributing writer of The Atlantic and recipient of the 2005 National Magazine Award, the magazine industry’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. Across from him, is Pete Wehner a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times, and also a contributing editor for The Atlantic. A graduate of the University of Washington, Pete Wehner served in the Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush administrations, including as Deputy Director of Speechwriting and later Director of the Office of Strategic Initiatives for President George W. Bush.   These two, Pete Wehner, a Christian for many years, and Jon Rauch, an avowed atheist, have plenty of experience in the fray of politics and have distinct political differences. What they share is a deep respect for each other and a loyal friendship built over decades. Listen to the end of the podcast where Jonathan Rauch articulates the three defining characteristics of Christianity.   @Peter_Wehner  @jon_rauch  • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate

14 Jul 2023Is violence ever justified? The dilemma of Nigeria’s Christians with Hassan John and Roger Bolton01:15:11
More Christians are killed in Nigeria than in any other country in the world. According to the charity Open Doors almost nine in ten of the more than 5,600 Christians murdered worldwide during 2022 were in Nigeria. A report by the British Parliament, Nigeria: Unfolding Genocide? Three Years On, was released this week, and highlights the massacres. ‘When will the world wake up to the persecution of Nigerian Christians?’, asked a lone headline in the The Spectator magazine. Few other news outlets paid attention. This week, Unbelievable host Roger Bolton speaks to Archdeacon Hassan John, an Anglican minister from Jos in northern Nigeria who has lived through much of the violence. A former journalist, he is now a church leader and campaigner for religious liberty, who tries to bring reconciliation between Christians and Muslims in the region. Hassan recalls harrowing tales of near-miss encounters with Islamic extremists and on-going anti-Christian violence which continues to tear apart communities. He also discusses how he and other Christians attempt to work with Muslim in their communities to prevent the violence. The Unbelievable conversation will help listeners understand the complexity of the situation of Nigeria and beyond, as well as asking some of the bigger questions facing Christians being persecuted for their faith worldwide. Is it ever acceptable for Christians to respond to persecution with violence? How can Christians ever practice forgiveness and love for enemies who have killed or harmed their family and friends? And, more broadly, why does the Western media ignore the story in places like Nigeria? • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate
02 Jun 2023Tim Keller: Life, Death, and Legacy with Lecrae, Pete Wehner, Krish Kandiah | Christian Witness in a Culture War01:24:21
Join us on Unbelievable presented by Ruth Jackson as we delve into the extraordinary life and work of the late Dr. Timothy J. Keller, a humble yet ambitious church leader who shaped faith in the modern world. Tim Keller's impact extends far beyond his time, as he fearlessly explored the intricate relationship between faith and culture. With City to City, and other nonprofit organisations he spearheaded, and as the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan alongside his wife Kathy, Keller seamlessly integrated ancient wisdom into the fabric of the modern city. With his quiet confidence and lack of defensiveness, he made faith thrilling and relevant, captivating hearts with timeless truths. As he neared the end of his journey, Keller taught us about death and dying well. He also shared invaluable advice from the book of Jeremiah: to live on the razor's edge, embrace audacious faith; invest rather than simply consume, leaving a lasting impact on others; and let go of the pursuit of reputation, recognising the fleeting nature of worldly acclaim. Unbelievable? discusses the life of Tim Keller, his style and impact, the question of suffering, how he refused to be drawn in but navigated the culture wars, and the wisdom he leaves through his many books. Unbelievable? show host Ruth Jackson is joined by three guests who knew and worked with Keller. Lecrae, Grammy award-winning hip-hop artist and actor; Dr. Krish Kandiah, author and social activist; and Pete Wehner, journalist and senior fellow at Trinity Forum all offer candid insights into the profound ways Keller impacted their lives both personally and through his extensive body of work. As always let us know what you think! We love to hear from you so get in touch if you have stories to share. And enjoy this edition of Unbelievable as we honour Tim Keller life and legacy and the far-reaching influence of his ministry.
24 Oct 2023Classic Replay: Is the fine-tuning of the Universe evidence for God? Robin Collins vs Peter Millican01:18:19
From 2016: Science has revealed that the fundamental constants and forces of the cosmos appear to be exquisitely fine-tuned to allow a universe in which life can develop. Is God the best explanation of the incredibly improbable odds of the universe we live in being a life-permitting one? Robin Collins is a Christian philosopher and a leading advocate of the argument for God from cosmic design. Peter Millican is an atheist philosopher at Oxford University. They debate the issues. 14 May 2024Scientific Evidence vs Faith  Jonathan McClatchie vs Elliot George (Classic Replay)01:03:23
One of our favourite debates today from the Archives - Elliot George, a retired science teacher, argues that science is grounded in evidence, while religion is based on 'faith' and 'make-belief' and should thus be dismissed. Jonathan McLatchie, writer, speaker and scientist, joins the debate and critiques Elliot's theories as fundamentally flawed. He contends that Christian belief is supported by evidence, asserting that science itself bolsters the argument for God's existence. Their debate explores the definition of belief, the validity of design as an explanation in biology, and the reasons Jonathan prefers Christianity over other worldviews. 07 Nov 2023Classic Replay: Did Jesus' followers believe he was God? Yusuf Ismail vs Jonathan McLatchie01:19:44
From 2016: In Islam, Jesus is regarded as a prophet. Muslims commonly claim that the Christian belief in Christ as co-equal with God is a corruption of Jesus' message and that his first followers did not regard him as the Son of God. Christian apologist Jonathan McLatchie returns for a second week to debate Islamic evangelist Yusuf Ismail on whether early church Christology evolved over time or whether Christ's deity was believed by his first followers. 30 Jun 2023I lost nine years of my life : Transgender to Transformed | Laura Perry Smalts shares her life-changing story with Billy Hallowell00:52:13
Even in a time of culture wars and controversy about everything, there are few subjects as difficult to discuss as transgender rights. In less than a decade the number of young people identifying as trans has exploded, and with it the number of arguments about the subject.  In British schools nearly 80% of teachers report trans-identified or non-binary students in their classroom.  Supporters say being trans is innate, like being gay, and that this is like the gay-rights movement of 30 years ago, with lots of trans kids coming out of the closet to be themselves. Critics say being trans is not innate and that many kids are identifying as the opposite sex because it is cool, and because they are being indoctrinated by a new ideology, fed to them on social media and by activist teachers.  The debates have become most heated when it comes to actual medical transitioning.  In all of the disagreement, what frequently gets lost is the need for compassion for anyone struggling with dysphoria. But how far should compassion go? Should it allow any teenager who says they are trans to medically transition? What about the increasing number of studies showing that many such kids have other serious mental-health issues?   Laura Perry Smalts who was born female, and lived as a young man for almost 9 years. She took cross-sex hormones for years and had two major surgeries. She now regrets ever having done it, has detransitioned, and wants to warn others of the dangers. She is here to tell her story.  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Transgender-Transformed-Story-Transition-Truly/dp/1933591307 This is a helpful article on the Living Out website on how to parent a child who is questioning their gender identity https://www.livingout.org/resources/articles/111/parenting-a-child-questioning-their-gender-identityThe Bayswater Support group helps parents whose children have some form of transgender of nonbinary identity https://www.bayswatersupport.org.ukA quick guide to the issue written for the Christian Medical Fellowship https://www.cmf.org.uk/resources/publications/content/?context=article&id=27357The Society for Evidence-based Gender Medicine https://segm.orgTransgender Trend campaign against medical interventions for gender-questioning children https://www.transgendertrend.comGenspect is an international coalition of professionals and others critical of transgender treatment for gender dysphoria https://genspect.orgThe Clinical Advisory Network on Sex and Gender https://can-sg.org/ • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate
12 Nov 2024Unbelievable? Classic: Peter Kreeft's argument from desire01:02:16
CS Lewis said "If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world." Peter Kreeft is a philosophy professor and well known Christian thinker and writer. He defends the "argument from desire". Does our experience of transcendent longing indicate that there is a God to satisfy it? Atheist philosopher Richard Norman says that the argument amounts to wish-fulfillment. They both sat down to discuss this issue, first broadcast in 2013. As we prepare a fresh episode exploring the legacy of Intelligent Design, we’re diving back into the archives to revisit this compelling 2020 conversation between biochemist Michael Behe and biologist Joshua Swamidass. Behe, a leading advocate for ID and a key witness in the trial, reflects on the case and its impact on the movement 15 years later. Swamidass, a fellow Christian and critic of ID, engages Behe on the scientific and theological implications of the trial and offers a robust critique of Behe’s book Darwin Devolves. 10 Nov 2023Gay Christians, God and the church | David Bennett, Taylor Telford & Billy Hallowell01:17:36
Embark on a journey with host Billy Hallowell exploring a deep friendship between two academics with wildly opposing views but who both attest to the boundless love of God on this week’s podcast. This week’s Unbelievable features an insightful discussion featuring two individuals with contrasting LGBTQI+ faith journeys as they delve into the intersection of faith, sexuality, and the Bible. The debate is between two gay Christians who have arrived at distinctly different interpretations of the Bible's teachings on sexual ethics, marriage, and human relationships. As a young man Dr. David Bennett perceived Christianity as an adversary to LGBTQI+ freedom. Shaped by early encounters with prejudice and homophobia, he embraced life as a gay activist. Opposite David is Dr. Taylor Telford, an academic theologian whose journey led her from an evangelical upbringing to a progressive perspective, especially concerning gay marriage. Taylor serves as the Associate Pastor for Imaginative Worship at a PC(USA) congregation in Spokane, WA, and as adjunct faculty at Whitworth University and The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. David Bennett's transformative conversion to Christianity, unfolded in a gay bar in his native Australia, and propelled him on a profound theological quest that ultimately led him to embrace an historically orthodox sexual ethic. Identifying as gay, a Christian, and living a celibate life, David is currently a postdoctoral research fellow and theologian at the University of Oxford, England. As the Anglican's General Synod meets this coming week and it appears gay and lesbian/ same-sex attracted Christians whatever their theological convictions are upset with the way Bishops have suggested implementing the Prayers of Love and Faith (PLF) in the Church of England, this is an unmissable episode of Premier Unbelievable. 29 Nov 2024Catholic vs Protestant debate - “Should Christians pray to Mary?” Trent Horn v Leonardo De Chirico hosted by Andy Kind01:09:35
What divides Catholics and Protestants theologically? How does the role of Mary and the authority of scripture shape the faith journeys of believers in these traditions? Premier Unbelievable?, host Andy Kind moderates a compelling dialogue between Dr. Leonardo De Chirico and Trent Horn, examining the key theological distinctions and shared values between Catholicism and Protestantism. The conversation goes there - the authority of scripture, the concept of Sola Scriptura, and the role of the papacy. Both guests share personal faith journeys—Leonardo’s transition from Catholicism to Protestantism and Trent’s conversion to Catholicism—highlighting how missionary work, cultural influences, and a quest for authentic faith shaped their beliefs. Key topics include the role of Mary in theology, the nature of church authority, and the historical context behind doctrinal differences. The discussion explores Catholicism’s emphasis on unity through institutional structures, contrasted with Protestantism’s focus on personal faith and salvation by grace. While addressing points of contention, such as the interpretation of scripture and the role of oral tradition in the early church, the guests find common ground in their shared commitment to scripture and the centrality of Christ. 08 Dec 2023What is the purpose of the universe? with Richard Swinburne, Philip Goff & Vince Vitale01:15:05
Richard Swinburne and Philip Goff debate why are we here? Is it time we moved on from both God and Atheism, as Goff suggests in his new book Why? The Purpose of the Universe? Unbelievable Host Vince Vitale guides us through as Goff argues that the traditional God is a bad explanation of cosmic purpose. Instead, he explores a range of alternative possibilities for accounting for cosmic purpose, from the speculation that we live in a computer simulation to the hypothesis that the universe itself is a conscious mind.  Richard Swinburne is a Fellow of the British Academy, and has received honorary doctorates from three overseas universities. He was Professor of the Philosophy of Religion at the University of Oxford from 1985 until 2002. Since then he has continued to lecture extensively in many countries. He is best known for his trilogy on the philosophy of theism -The Coherence of Theism, The Existence of God, and Faith and Reason. Richard Swinburne and James Sterba are launching a new debate Why would a good God allow so much suffering? early in 2024. Dr Philip Goff is Professor of Philosophy at Durham University. His research focuses on consciousness and the ultimate nature of reality. Goff is best known for defending panpsychism, the view that consciousness pervades the universe and is a fundamental feature of it.  Richard’s papers 'The existence of God', 'The problem of evil' are accessible on his website: https://users.ox.ac.uk/~orie0087/framesetpublications.shtml and his books are available here: https://global.oup.com/academic/product/is-there-a-god-9780199580439?cc=gb&lang=en& Book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Why-Purpose-Universe-Philip-Goff/dp/0198883765 Website: https://philipgoffphilosophy.com/ Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@MindChat Social Media: https://twitter.com/Philip_Goff • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate

But Dianna E Anderson's book 'Damaged Goods' claims that the purity culture of the American church she grew up in can be damaging for young people and that sexual relationships before marriage are permissible for Christians. Sarah Long is a youth advisor for the Church Of England and has been involved with the Romance Academy, an organisation promoting a healthy view of sex to youth culture. She believes young Christians should be encouraged to save sex for marriage as the place God intended for sexual intimacy. 23 Jun 2023From Porn Star to Pastor: Joshua Broome's Journey of Redemption00:52:28
From Porn Star to Pastor: Joshua Broome's Journey of Redemption Joshua Broome in conversation with Billy Hallowell This week Premier Unbelievable delves into the extraordinary life transformation of Joshua Broome. In this gripping interview we unravel the tale of a man who reached the pinnacle of fame and fortune in the adult film industry, only to be left empty, broken, and yearning for something more.  The interview has much to say to those struggling with addiction to porn, those caught up in creating it and those wondering what to do about its growing influence on our society. “I was one of the most successful adult film stars in the world," says Broome. "I obtained fame, wealth, and travelled the world all to find out that none of those would fill the emptiness in my heart. Then, I found Jesus."   Billy Hallowell, host of Unbelievable?, peels back the layers of Joshua's remarkable journey, from his meteoric rise to be one of the top five male porn stars, with over 1,000 movies under his belt and numerous accolades, to his haunting realisation that success alone couldn't fill the void within his soul. Joshua describes 2012, the year he won male porn performer of the year, as the worst year of his life.  Discover how Joshua found redemption in Jesus which led him eventually to become a pastor. Through his own experiences, he shares profound insights on how we can confront our past actions, and any shame attached to them, to embrace forgiveness and find true fulfilment. It’s a transformative personal narrative, which offers hope to those wanting to escape the grip of pornography, as well as a warning about the broader dangers of porn within society. https://www.joshuabroome.me/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/iamjoshuabroome/?hl=en If you would like someone to talk to about anything that has affected you by this show, please call Premier Lifeline our confidential helpline offering a listening ear, and emotional and spiritual support. 05 Dec 2023Classic Replay: Unbelievable? Is Open Theism a heresy? James White vs John Sanders01:18:46
From 2016: John E Sanders is one among a number of evangelical theologians such as Greg Boyd who have embraced Open Theism – the view that God does not necessarily have foreknowledge of all future events and that the future is open. Many evangelicals believe Open Theism is a heresy – denying the omniscience of God and going against Biblical teaching. James White of Alpha and Omega ministries believes Open Theism is a serious heresy and defends a Calvinist view of God’s sovereignty – that God has predestined all future events for his glory. 11 Oct 2024Buffer zones: protecting women or an overreach against free speech? Lois McLatchie Miller vs Jan MacVarish hosted by Andy Kind01:11:38
Should silent prayer be banned? This week on Unbelievable we’re touching on a sensitive and deeply complex issue that affects both women and men— abortion. Specifically, we’ll be discussing buffer zones outside abortion clinics, which have sparked intense debate around the world, including in the UK, where new legislation comes into effect on October 31, 2024. These zones will make it illegal to influence someone’s decision to access abortion services, including activities like prayer, within a 150-meter radius of clinics.  This conversation resonates not only in the UK but also in the US, where similar debates have unfolded. How can we balance the safety and privacy of women when they are at their most vulnerable against preserving individual freedoms of speech and religious expression.  Join Andy Kind and his two thoughtful guests who have wrestled with these matters extensively: Jan MacVarish, a pro-choice advocate supporting buffer zones, and Lois McLatchie Miller, a pro-life defender and senior legal communications officer for ADF, who advocates for religious freedom and free speech, particularly in cases like silent prayer outside clinics.  SOCIAL LINKS Twitter: https://twitter.com/unbelievablefe Facebook: / https://facebook.com/premierunbelievable Instagram: / https://instagram.com/premierunbelievable Tik Tok: / https://tiktok.com/@premier.unbelievable 👉 Get bonus content, updates, fascinating articles, and early access to new episodes—absolutely free! 27 Dec 2024Science vs Faith: Can We Find Truth and Trust in a Divided World? with Dr. Francis Collins & Phil Halper01:14:21
In a world splintered by distrust across science, faith, and politics, is it possible to find common ground on the sources of true wisdom? Dr. Francis Collins, a world-renowned geneticist and Christian, believes we must, and his new book, The Road to Wisdom: On Truth, Science, Faith, and Trust, aims to rekindle these values. Collins argues that a foundation of humility, truth, and morality — not partisan loyalty — should guide our judgement. But in an age where allegiance often outweighs evidence, can this vision truly take hold? In this episode of Premier Unbelievable, Collins squares off with Phil Halper, atheist scientist and creator of Before the Big Bang, to probe the limits of science and the necessity of faith. Together, they’ll tackle pressing questions: Can faith and science coexist without compromising truth? How does trust (or lack of it) contribute to today’s social and political divides? Is it possible to transcend polarization and rebuild a fractured world? Whether you're a person of faith, a skeptic, or simply searching for answers in a turbulent world, this episode offers a deep dive into the limits of science, the necessity of trust, and the pursuit of wisdom. 22 Apr 2025Classic: Debating the Scandals of Easter: Jesus' Crucifixion and Resurrection David Instone-Brewer v Bob Price00:59:53
Listen to a compelling classic discussion between David Instone-Brewer, a New Testament scholar, and Bob Price, a professor of biblical criticism. This Unbelievable focuses on the scandals surrounding Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, as argued in David's book, 'The Jesus Scandals.' David posits these events based on their embarrassing nature for early Christians. In contrast, Price offers a skeptical perspective, suggesting alternative explanations involving mythic and cultural influences. The dialogue explores various pieces of evidence, including the Talmud and the Nazareth Inscription, and debates the plausibility and historical context of the resurrection accounts.
02 Apr 2024Debunking the Myth of Secular Enlightenment: A Clash of Perspectives David Bentley Hart vs Terry Sanderson (Replay)00:59:24
Today we delve into the contentious debate surrounding the role of secularism in Western civilization and its relationship with Christianity. A growing chorus of new atheist writers heralds the advent of an enlightened era of secular rationalism, purporting to liberate society from what they perceive as the shackles of outdated Christian influence. However, according to David Bentley Hart, acclaimed author of "Atheist Delusions: The Christian Revolution and its Fashionable Enemies," such claims amount to nothing more than an "atheist delusion." His book, which garnered the prestigious Michael Ramsey Prize for theological writing in 2011, challenges the narrative of secular triumphalism by revisiting the historical contributions of Christianity. On the opposing side, Terry Sanderson former President of the UK's National Secular Society contends that contemporary society thrives under an increasingly secular framework, asserting that the freedoms and values we cherish are not contingent upon a Christian foundation. In this engaging dialogue, we see a clash of perspectives as David argues that secular perspectives are rooted in a misguided myth of secular "progress." By examining the intertwined histories of Christianity and secularism, David presents a compelling case that challenges prevailing notions of societal evolution. The Big Conversation - Episode 3 | Season 5 It’s a widely held view that science and religion are in conflict, including and perhaps especially over how they approach one of life's most fundamental questions: what does it mean to be human? Women in the Bible frequently emerge as devoted followers of Jesus, prominently present at significant events such as the tomb and the Cross. They function as followers and disciples of Jesus, with the Apostle Paul acknowledging and respecting female coworkers. However, our understanding often falls short in fully recognising the humanity of these female characters, as attention tends to be directed solely toward Jesus' interactions with them. This series aims to delve deeper into the lives of these women, offering a more comprehensive exploration that may reshape our perspectives today. First up we have Liz Cooledge Jenkins, a writer, preacher, and former college campus minister, and the author of Nice Churchy Patriarchy: Reclaiming Women’s Humanity from Evangelicalism. 13 Oct 2023Is there a conflict between religion and science?01:17:43
Can you be a serious scientist and believe in God, and even believe in miracles?   Tom Rudelius never thought much about God until his brother, a new convert to Christianity, challenged him to explore faith. Tom, now a rising young theoretical physicist based at Durham University in the UK made a journey to unexpected faith, through subsequent doubt and anxiety, and ultimately to a firmer, life-transforming allegiance to Jesus. Phil and Tom wrestle with creation and cosmic origins, the problem of evil and suffering, the compatibility of miracles with science and the plausibility of Jesus’ resurrection. Phil Halper is an atheist, and Youtuber who's interviewed leading physicists from Stephen Hawking, Sir Roger Penrose to Alan Guth for his YouTube series Before the Big Bang. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and published several papers in peer reviewed journals on the Problem of Animal Suffering and has a new film on the subject which features other leading atheists such as Peter Singer and Alex O'Connor.   Taking on Phil is Tom Rudelius author of 'Chasing proof, finding science'. Fresh from post doctoral research at UC Berkeley Tom is now Assistant Professor, Mathematical & Theoretical Particle Physics at Durham University, UK. Tom completed his undergraduate work at Cornell, earned a doctorate in physics at Harvard, and has conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. His research focuses on string theory, quantum field theory, and early universe cosmology.   Phil Halper https://www.youtube.com/@skydivephil Tom Rudelius Website | Twitter | Instagram  • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate
06 Oct 2023Should our AIs and robots have souls?01:23:41
Should we be fearful or make friends with our robot helpers?   And how can humans flourish in this brave new world?  One of our guests today on Unbelievable believes the hidden power of humans is that we are imperfect yet essential? Roger Bolton hosts this edition of Unbelievable with writer and theologian Dr. Eve Poole and Prof. Beth Singler, a digital ethnographer.  Our seemingly irrational qualities, like emotions and intuition, are what Unbelievable guest Dr. Eve Poole calls the "junk" code that define humanity, fostering the reciprocal altruism that sustains our existence.  Eve Poole's argument might upset or even offend those with a fairly traditional faith, as she argues that we should consider giving robots 'souls'. But if we give robots, as Eve suggests,  the 'junk code' of humans, will that lead to calls to give robots rights? How do we feel about giving rights to a toaster? Eve Poole did her PhD in Theology and Capitalism at the University of Cambridge and is an expert on leadership and education. Professor Beth Singler is a digital ethnographer based at the University of Zurich. Beth explores the social, ethical, philosophical and religious implications of advances in Artificial Intelligence and robotics.   https://bvlsingler.com/ https://evepoole.com/ • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate
21 Jul 2023Should we deconstruct or reconstruct? with Olivia Jackson, Preston Ulmer and Vince Vitale.01:15:29
Unbelievable takes on the often-misunderstood topic of deconstruction in the sense of deconstructing Christian faith or becoming exvangelical is another phrase you might have come across. It refers to a process, some would say a movement, where individuals critically examine their beliefs, doctrines, and assumptions about Christianity. It often involves re-evaluating traditional interpretations of scripture, exploring different theological perspectives, and grappling with doubts and uncertainties.   Many proponents of deconstruction argue that it can lead to a deeper and more authentic faith by shedding outdated or harmful beliefs and embracing a more personal and nuanced understanding of spirituality. Critics, on the other hand, express concerns that deconstruction can result in a crisis of one's most foundational beliefs crumble beneath them.   But is this at all surprising? With failures of the church to reflect Jesus, with abuse by Christian leaders in the news daily, where is one to turn? Will deconstruction take you deeper? Or will it destroy your belief altogether? Vince Vitale hosts this week, and his guests are Olivia Jackson author of (un) Certain A Collective Memoir of Deconstructing Faith and Preston Ulmer, founder of The Doubters Club and author of Deconstruct Faith Discover Jesus -  how questioning your religion can lead you to a healthy and holy God Olivia's book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Certain-Collective-Memoir-Deconstructing-Faith/dp/0334063639 Preston's book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Preston-Ulmer/e/B098F92CQY/ref=aufs_dp_mata_dsk https://www.instagram.com/ptulmer/ https://www.thedoubtersclub.com/startyourowndc • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate

28 Mar 2025Should We Help People Live - Not Die? Assisted Dying and the Terminally Ill Adults Bill | Dr Susan Marriott & Prof Keith Brown01:06:36
How close are we to legalising assisted suicide in the UK? Should dying be offered as a course of treatment by NHS doctors? The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is one of the most contentious pieces of legislation currently before Parliament. It seeks to amend the Suicide Act of 1961 so that 'encouraging or assisting suicide' would no longer be illegal if carried out in accordance with the new Bill. Joining Andy Kind on Unbelievable are Dr Susan Marriott, a trained medical doctor and Head of Public Policy at the Christian Medical Fellowship UK, and safeguarding expert Prof. Keith Brown who spoke on this topic when the bill first came to Parliament. Due to technical issues beyond our control, Prof Keith Brown was only able to join us for the start of the programme. We hope to welcome him back to Unbelievable before the Bill reaches its report stage on 25 April 2025.

Ruth Jackson hosted a live debate at a school with the help of Aylesbury Youth for Christ. She was joined by Rev Dr Joseph Boot, founder and president of the Ezra Institute for Contemporary Christianity, and Harry Amos, who moved from Christianity to "agnostic atheism" while studying philosophy, politics and economics and blogs about his experience at The Book of Amos. 31 Oct 2023Classic Replay: A Jewish sceptic investigates the resurrection: Michael Alter vs Jonathan McLatchie01:20:30
From 2016: Michael Alter is a Jew who spent a decade researching the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus after being challenged to investigate it. The result is his book ‘The Resurrection: A critical enquiry’. He was not eventually persuaded by the evidence he found. Part of his research responds to the so-called ‘minimal facts’ surrounding the story often cited by apologists. Apologist Jonathan McLatchie responds to Alter’s objections to the resurrection making that case that the reported experiences of the disciples, and the conversion of Paul and James the brother of Jesus, provide historical evidence for the plausibility of the Resurrection. 15 Nov 2024The Divine Debate: Is Morality Rooted in God? Atheist Stephen Law vs Matthew Su hosted by Ruth Jackson00:45:59
🌟 Is faith necessary for a moral life? 🌟 Is belief in God essential for a meaningful moral framework? Or can secular philosophy give us all the answers? 🤔 This week on Unbelievable?, host Ruth Jackson 🎙️ welcomes two dynamic thinkers to explore one of the most profound debates: the role of God in shaping our moral universe. 🌌✨ Recorded live at Waddesdon School, UK with Aylesbury Vale Youth for Christ, this episode promises to challenge everything you thought you knew about faith and philosophy. 🙌 👤 British philosopher at Oxford University, Stephen Law, creator of the famous "Evil God Challenge," isn’t afraid to question the existence of a benevolent deity in a world full of suffering. Is God really all-good, or could an “evil god” be just as plausible? 😱💡 👤 Joining him is Christian scholar from Cambridge University, Matthew Su, whose perspective celebrates life as a gift from a loving creator. For Matthew, God not only grounds morality but gives life ultimate meaning and purpose. 🌱💖 🔥 This episode tackles the biggest questions: Why would a good God allow suffering? 04 Oct 2024Christian Philosopher Vince Vitale Stunned by Free Will Showdown: Alex O'Connor vs. Alex Carter00:34:53
Recently on Unbelievable you may have seen Ruth Jackson host an energised debate about free will between Alex O’Connor – host of the Within Reason podcast and the highly popular YouTube channel, Cosmic Skeptic – and Dr. Alex Carter – who is the Academic Director for Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Cambridge, Institute of Continuing Education.    It was very insightful, but neither of these thinkers believe in God, so we also wanted to offer some reflections on the topic of free will from someone who DOES believe in God. We asked Unbelievable host Dr. Vince Vitale for his reflections. They will make sense regardless of whether you’ve seen the debate between Alex and Alex. 12 Apr 2024Jesus and Modern Politics with Tom 'NT' Wright, Preston Sprinkle and Billy Hallowell01:14:30
It's no secret that modern American Christians are deeply divided over politics. This division raises important questions about the influence of Scripture on political beliefs. To make sense of this, we invited renowned scholar NT Tom Wright, theologian, professor and star of the "Ask NT Wright Anything Podcast" along with New York Times bestselling author Dr. Preston M. Sprinkle host of the Theology in the Raw podcast. Tom Wright stresses the need for Christians to prioritise the kingdom of God and embody its values within the church. Preston talks about how Israel’s exile to Babylon, Jesus’ mission on earth, and the teachings of Paul all shaped the church’s relationship with politics and can inform our own relationship with politics today. 10 May 2024Proof of the afterlife? John Burke and Dr Eben Alexander MD hosted by Billy Hallowell01:23:33
Everyone from Madonna to top neuroscientists and millions of other people around the world report personal, unforgettable near-death experiences or NDEs.  Do these NDE accounts prove the existence of a loving God?  This week on Unbelievable? Pastor and author John Burke, who has studied and examined over 1,000 accounts of near-death experiences, explains these reports provide faith-building evidence of God and the Bible.    Neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander joins the debate pushing back on Burke’s assertion theses NDEs corroborate the Bible. He always considered himself a man of science. His unwavering belief in evidence-based medicine fuelled a career in the top medical institutions of the world. But then a very vivid NDE that he writes about it in his riveting book "Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife" changed his life forever. His NDE followed being pronounced ‘clinically dead’ after falling into a coma with bacterial meningitis. He moved from being a strict physicalist to being some form of dualist and talks with experience of a life beyond death. But he still would not describe himself as a Christian.   SOCIAL LINKS: Twitter: https://twitter.com/unbelievablefe Facebook: / https://facebook.com/premierunbelievable Instagram: / https://instagram.com/premierunbelievable Tik Tok: / https://tiktok.com/@premier.unbelievable Social Media: Facebook page: search @johnburkeofficial for correct John Burke page Instagram: @johnburkeofficial website: www.imagineheaven.net • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate
24 May 2024Is gentleness possible in politics? with Michael Wear and Roger Bolton01:15:47
Trust in our elected officials seems at an all-time low. Moral failures, infighting, and scandals have become commonplace. Today, on Unbelievable? we ask, Can we rediscover the moral compass in politics? With crucial primaries taking place in the USA and an election in the UK on July 4 we are asking what should be the standard for behaviour of elected officials? And who decides? The discussion is hosted by BBC veteran broadcaster Roger Bolton. Can politics uplift and inspire? Is our political identity intertwined with our personal one? How can Christians reshape politics for the greater good? Michael Wear, the founder of the Center for Christianity and Public Life, emphasizes the importance of gentleness in American political dialogue. As a key figure in President Obama's faith outreach and a prolific writer, Wear advocates for integrating Christian values into public life for the benefit of all. 29 Dec 2023Can Christians do comedy? with Milton Jones, Allan Finnegan and Andy Kind01:14:26
In this episode, top British comedian and writer Milton Jones and Baptist minister, comedian and semi-finalist of Britain's Got Talent, Allan Finnegan, offer a captivating behind-the-scenes glimpse into their world. From tackling ego and humility to navigating the rollercoaster of highs and lows, the discussion hosted by comedian and Unbelievable host Andy Kind delves into the intricate dance between comedy, faith and meaning. The paradox of not caring too much about opinions while needing audience approval takes centre stage, as the comedians share their tales of failure, emphasising the resilience needed to keep going. Small moments take on immense significance, and creating meaningful experiences for audiences becomes a driving force. The conversation explores the nuanced relationship between comedy and the church, addressing the challenges of meeting diverse expectations. Post-pandemic shifts in comedy and concerns about cancel culture add a contemporary twist. The intersection of comedy and faith sparks thought-provoking questions about its mission and potential to convey a narrative of hope, joy, peace, freedom, and love. The conversation wraps up with reflections on truth personified and the pivotal role of authenticity in comedy.
07 Feb 2025Does Suffering disprove God? Simon Edwards v Harry Amos01:08:09
Can belief in a loving God withstand the reality of suffering? In this special live debate hosted in front of a live student audience in partnership with Youth For Christ in Aylesbury, Unbelievable? brings together two compelling voices to tackle one of the most profound questions in philosophy and theology: does suffering debunk the existence of a God? Can a good God allow such suffering? And does God send good people to hell? 🤔 Harry Amos – An agnostic atheist and blogger at The Book of Amos, who argues that the existence of suffering challenges belief in a benevolent God. 🙏 Simon Edwards – An adjunct speaker apologist from the OCCA, The Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics and author of The Sanity of Belief, defending the rationality of faith in the face of pain and hardship.  Together, they engage in a discussion on whether suffering makes God’s existence implausible—or if it actually points to something deeper. 16 Jan 2024Classic Replay: Is the Bible primitive and immoral, or can we trust what it says? with Leslie Scrace and Chris Sinkinson01:03:04
From the Archives: Leslie Scrace, a former Methodist minister who transitioned to atheism, turned away from the Bible when he lost his faith. Two decades later, he penned a comprehensive account of his atheist perspective in a book titled "An Unbelievers Guide to the Bible" in which Scrace critically examines sections of the Old Testament, deeming some as primitive and immoral, while applauding others that align with humanist values. In response, Chris Sinkinson, a church pastor and an instructor in Old Testament and Apologetics at Moorlands Bible College, challenges Scrace's approach, asserting that the Bible should not be dissected in this way and argues that removing God from the moral framework of the Bible diminishes its inherent meaning. Their dialogue delves into specific books like Job, Joshua, Song of Solomon, and the Gospels. Additionally, Chris questions Leslie on the objective foundation of his humanist morality, sparking a thoughtful exchange between the two perspectives. We hope you enjoy this fascinating dive into one of the greatest objection to Christianity, can we truly trust the Bible?
