Marlén Rodriguez -Wolfe is the CEO of the Ukulele Kids Club - a charity that provides ukuleles to sick children in hospitals around the world. In this episode of Ukulele Tales, she tells us how the charity got started, the benefits that music can have on sick children, and how we can help the UKC continue to expand and grow. I'm currently auctioning off my limited edition Twenty One Pilots ukulele to raise money for the UKC - you can bid on it here! 07 Dec 2022 | Bernadette Teaches Music - aka Plazi | 00:33:51
This week I'm having a chat with the one and only Bernadette Teaches Music. We've both forged fairly similar paths as online YouTube ukulele instructors and as there aren't many of us about it's important we stick together! Bernadette is an open book and tells us everything we could possibly want to know: from how she got her start as a YouTuber, all the way through to going into labour during a ukulele festival... and still finishing the festival! ALSO: I need your help! What are you doing ukulele-wise for Christmas this year? Are you playing any concerts, going carol singing, playing in church? Let me know! Also what ukuleles or uke-related items are you hoping to find in your Christmas stocking? Enjoy :) LINKS: Bernadette: YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/bernadetteteachesmusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/plazi/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bernadetteteachesmusic/ Ukulele Tales: Patreon: https://www.Patreon.com/UkeTeacher Twitter: https://www.Twitter.com/UkeTeacher Instagram: https://www.Instagram.com/UkeTeacher Get bonus content on PatreonHosted on Acast. 14 Dec 2022 | Tyler Austenfeld from TenThumbsPro | 00:59:28
This week I'm up in London talking to Tyler Austenfeld aka TenThumbsPro on YouTube. Like me, Tyler is one of the OG online ukulele instructors and has seen and done it all. Not only has he been a full-time online music instructor for over a decade (although he hates to be referred to as a YouTuber!), he also has a passion for traveling, and an insatiable appetite for learning music. We discuss everything in this hour-long episode, and if you're still hungry for more at the end of it there's a bonus ten minutes available on my Patreon page! Next week's episode is the Christmas special, with Jake Shimabukuru! Let me know how the ukulele fits into your festive plans this year. Are you performing in any concerts, going carol singing, playing in church? Let me know! Also what ukuleles or uke-related items are you hoping to find in your Christmas stocking? 21 Dec 2022 | Jake Shimabukuro | 00:45:16
This week's conversation with Jake Shimabukuro was recorded at the Grand Northern Ukulele Festival in Huddersfield, back in the summer. A big thank you to Jake, for being so generous with his time, his manager Brett Lind for coordinating everything, and also to Mary-Agnes Krell, the GNUF head honcho for making it all possible. We discuss how emotional it was performing live again following Covid, and what an important role the ukulele played in bringing everyone back together again. Jake also talks about how he puts together - and constantly evolves - his fantastic arrangements of classic tunes. And he even tells the story of how he once played for the Queen! If you want to help support the podcast, please share it with your ukulele friends and communities. You can also directly fund it and receive bonus content by signing up to my Patreon. Next week's episode is the last one of the year, so let me know your ukulele new year's resolutions now and I'll read some of them out on the show. Until then, I wish you all a very, merry Christmas. 04 Jan 2023 | UkuLenny | 00:38:39
This week's conversation is with Lendl San Jose - aka Ukulenny. After a quick chat about how the last few years changed things for musicians, the talk takes some weird and wonderful tangents about all sorts of things from pasta to parenthood. We talk about Lenny's love of the saxophone, how he creates his famous multi-track videos using loop pedals and other technology, and we try and put a number on just how many songs he actually knows - they don't call him the human jukebox for nothing! Lenny also tells us why it's always a good idea to always keep a musical instrument in the trunk of your car... just in case! If you want to help support the podcast, please share it with your ukulele friends and communities. You can also directly fund it and receive bonus content by signing up to my Patreon. 18 Jan 2023 | Bakithi Kumalo (bass player on Paul Simon's Graceland) | 00:56:10
Bakithi Kumalo is the South African musician who shot to fame as the bass player on Paul Simon's Grammy award winning album Graceland. This album was part of the soundtrack of my childhood and it was a thrill to chat to him about all sorts of topics. As well as performing with the likes of Sting, Gloria Estefan and the Grateful Dead, we also talk about Bakithi's impoverished childhood, and how music was his passport to a better life. We also talk about his relationship with Paul Simon, and, of course, that solo in You Can Call Me Al. As well as playing the bass guitar, in recent years he's also taken to playing the U-Bass (electric bass ukulele) and is even working on his own signature model. Bakithi is a hero of mine, and after this conversation I'd like to think of him as a friend too. He's also the first ever Grammy Award Winner we've had on the show, as far as I'm aware! It was an absolute thrill to have him on the podcast and I think you're going to love listening to this episode. 25 Jan 2023 | Brittni Paiva | 00:44:38
Brittni Paiva is an award winning half-Portuguese, quarter-Danish, eighth-Japanese, and eighth-Hawaiian musician who started learning classical music at the age of four! She picked up the ukulele at 11 years old, using her classical training to teach herself, and hasn't looked back since. We talk about how she released her first album at 15, and how it inspired another famous Hawaiian musician to take up the ukulele. We also cover all kinds of topics including producing music for herself and other artists, her EDM side-projects, and of course her unique image. We also find out why having perfect pitch is both a blessing and a curse! If you want to support the podcast, please share it with your ukulele friends and communities. 01 Feb 2023 | Christopher Davis-Shannon - Banjolele Tinman | 01:09:05
Christopher Davis-Shannon is not your typical musician! Based in Philadelphia, he plays soprano ukulele and the double bass, somehow managing to alternate between one of the smallest and one of the biggest instruments you can possibly play. With a unique fashion sense, and a love of music old and new, the Banjolele Tinman is quite a character. In this hour-long walk through Hyde Park in London, we talk about everything from the meaning of the 'Tinman' nickname, the third wave of ukulele, his impeccable fashion sense, and the great Roy Smeck. I think Chris might be the first musician I've ever come across whose merch includes his own line of ukulele strings. Chris has also just released an album of jazz standards "FIFTY/50" with French accordion player, Jacques Pellarin. 08 Feb 2023 | Andrew Molina | 00:45:24
Andrew Molina is a Hawaiian-born musician, from a rich musical heritage. He started learning the ukulele at the age of 13 and within a year was touring the islands playing to crowds of over 800 people. Now a full-time musician, Andrew is a composer, performer and teacher, having recently launched his own online Andrew Molina Ukulele Academy. I got to chat with him at the L.A. International Ukulele Festival last year and we spoke about all of this and more, including: * Which ukulele star inspired Andrew to start playing (hint: she's already been on the show!) * Which ukulele star challenged Andrew to a fight at GNUF! * What it's like to perform with your Dad * His initial fear of live-streaming during the pandemic. We also talk about the importance of visualisation, and how Andrew uses it to accomplish his musical goals. 15 Feb 2023 | Abby Lyons | 00:56:49
Singer-songwriter Abby Lyons is a classically trained musician who wrote her first song at the age of 12. After toiling for five years on YouTube, she was recently commissioned to perform on the soundtrack for The Wheel Of Time, an Amazon Prime Original TV show. We spoke after the L.A. International Ukulele Festival and she opened up to me about all sorts of fascinating stuff including how she got the opportunity to perform on an Amazon show, recording the music in her closet during the pandemic, navigating the choppy waters of social media, and working for Fender. We also talk about a conversation we had at NAMM a few years ago that sent me into the depths of existential despair - although it turns out that I may have misremembered some of what she said! Anthony Ka'Uka Stanley - is a ukulele virtuoso, and also an incredible hula dancer. He's been playing the ukulele since the age of 4 and dancing since the age of 2! I had a chat with him at NAMM and he spoke openly about what it was like growing up in a musical family, as well as Hawaiian musical culture in general. As well as this, there's also our first Uke-Story! Listener Nick DiSanto shares with us the incredible story of his favourite ukulele, and why it will always be special to both him and his son. 15 Mar 2023 | Vince Esquire + rare George Formby banjolele | 00:23:22
Vince Esquire has played guitar and ukulele with the Allman Brothers, Willie Nelson, G Love and Adam Sandler - as well as being an excellent musician in his own right. We talk about his rock influences - including how the Eddie Vedder ukulele album changed things for him. We also talk about his band Kanekoa, their new album Songs from the Great Disruption, and all the collabs they did for it, including one with Jake Shimabukuro. We also talk about playing Hot Cross Buns on the recorder! There's also a great ukulele story from listener Nick Witherow who tells us all about the limited edition signed George Formby banjolele that his father left him - and whether or not it would be a good idea to get it fixed. 22 Mar 2023 | Victoria Vox | 01:00:30
Victoria Vox is a true independent spirit! I met her at the L.A. Ukulele Festival last year and we had a great chart about what it means to be an independent artist, how she played mouth trumpet on the Jay Leno show, how and why she came up with the name Victoria Vox, and lots and lots more besides. We also talk a great deal about her phenomenal latest album, Nirvana In R.E.M. - including where the title comes from (it's nothing to do with Kurt Cobain or Michael Stipe...), the original artworks that inspired the songs, and the exciting directions she's taking the ukulele with the use of sampling, octave pedals, and other cool effects. We chatted for nearly two hours, so this hour-long episode is just the edited highlights! But if you want more I'll be posting some extra inserts on my Patreon page very soon - so be sure to sign up for that if you want bonus content and to get a warm fuzzy feeling that you're helping support the show! --- Ukulele Tales is sponsored by Kala Brand Music! 28 Mar 2023 | Danny Weinkauf (They Might Be Giants) | 00:55:06
Grammy award-winning musician, Danny Weinkauf, has composed music for television, film, children, and - for the last 20+ years - has been the bass player for They Might Be Giants. Not only that, but on their 2002 kids album No he became the first person to write and sing a song on a TMBG record that didn't have the name John. I caught up with him about a week into the current TMBG world tour, and we spoke about everything from how he started out as a musician, playing and performing with They Might Be Giants, wedding bands, the music of The Simpsons, his solo children's music projects, songwriting on the ukulele, and helping to produce his son's first record. We also learn the secret of the red pants, and find out exactly where they do make balloons! They Might Be Giants have been one of my all-time favourite bands ever since I was a child, so this was a real thrill for me, and Danny didn't disappoint. If you want to hear more from him I really recommend you check out his latest solo album, Light Up Your Love, released at the beginning of this year, and available now on all streaming services. --- Ukulele Tales is sponsored by Kala Brand Music! 11 Apr 2023 | Magnus Sjöquist - Swedish U-Bass Supremo! | 00:22:33
I met Magnus Sjöquist - Swedish U-Bass Supremo, and fello Kala Brand Artist - at NAMM last year. We didn't get to chat for long but among the topics that did come up were his 15-piece Steely Dan tribute band(!), his thoughts on using the bass as a lead instrument, and duetting the U-Bass with a bassoon back in his native Sweden. Magnus also talks about how he decided to take up the U-Bass... after reading a review of it in a magazine! There's also some fall-out from last week's episode that I need to address directly at the start of the show. --- Ukulele Tales is sponsored by Kala Brand Music! 25 Apr 2023 | Plastic Jeezus | 00:36:15
This week I'm chatting with Simon and Aaron - collectively known as musical comedy duo "Plastic Jeezus". There's lots to talk about, including how they got their start, their musical backgrounds, their award-winning shows and their attention-grabbing performances at ukulele festivals up and down the land. But it turns out that Simon and I were actually in the same class at school together and haven't seen each other for over 20 years so there's also a fair amount of chat about GCSE music lessons, underage drinking, and the famous Bournemouth music venue, Mr. Smith's! If you haven't heard of Plastic Jeezus before, do yourself a favour and check them out - they're hilarious, and they're going to be huge. The video E for Effort, which we discuss briefly in the interview, is a great place to start. --- Ukulele Tales is sponsored by Kala Brand Music! 09 May 2023 | Ron Telpner | 00:26:28
In 2016 Ron Telpner received a cancer diagnosis and was told he had just months to live. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he decided to learn how to play the ukulele, posting a new song to Instagram every single day to chart his progress. Now seven years later, Ron is alive and kicking, and he credits the uke with helping him outlive his diagnosis. This is a must-listen episode, as Ron is full of positivity and has an incredible story to tell which I feel honoured to share with you. We talk about:

23 May 2023 | Anne Reburn | 00:39:48
You may have seen Anne Reburn and her clones in some terrific YouTube cover videos on her channel (Mr. Sandman, with over 9 MILLION views is perhaps the most famous one!), but she also writes and records her own music, produces and directs her own videos, and has done voiceover work for a Netflix animated series. She was also one of the first musicians that I met when I was living in the U.S.A. and the one of the first people to collab with me., so it was great to catch up with her when I was back in L.A. last month for NaMM. This week I'm speaking to teacher, performer, and all-round ukulele great, Peter Luongo! You may have seen Peter in the 2006 documentary The Mighty Uke, or you may have seen him performing as part of the Legacy Ukulele Ensemble. Or perhaps you know him best as James Hill's ukulele teacher. Either way, the man is an absolute dynamo, and I was privileged to manage to get him to sit still(ish!) for about half an hour at the end of NaMM and have an in-depth conversation about everything from his thoughts on why it's important to teach the ukulele properly, to how he got started playing music, to his relationship with James Hill. Peter is headed to the U.K. next week where he will be attending the Grand Northern Ukulele Festival, and also hosting a day-long retreat for ukulele teachers!
