Covid strikes again, but we fight through it for another episode, a little later than expected. So much to catch up on from MLB! A former pitcher involved in an extra martial affair (shocked!), a former first baseman running for Congress poorly (shocked!), bad food in a major league clubhouse, two fan fests for teams that no longer reside in cities put on by fans, Hall of Fame reactions, Fantasy Camp stories and all the uniform news you could possibly ever ask for heading into the 2024 season.  The Wax Pack Heroes season threatens to come to a close as Jeff is running rough shot all over Mark, making a mockery of this WPH season, blowing through the competition like the 2023 Mets blew through the luxury tax thresh hold.

Former MLB pitcher Sean Lowe joins us this week. He was a first round draft pick by the Cardinals out of Arizona State and went on to play 7 years in the big leagues with the Cards, White Sox, Pirates, Rockies and Royals. Sean tells us about how he found out we was getting called up the first time, his first & only professional HR (you’ll be surprised what he did after that game) and being part of one of the biggest brawls in MLB history when the Tigers and the White Sox squared off three separate times during a game in 2000, resulting in 16 players being suspended for a total of 82 games. He had such great stories we had to break this one up into two episodes!

We have a JJ Hardy landscaping update, a leftover 420 thought that could revolutionize jerseys (they can’t get any worse), we rag on John Fisher, again, plus we got some good debuts to discuss.  In our Tales segment Mark highlights a 5 tool prospect who left us too early, we get to the bottom of Rod Murphy’s 1990Upper Deck baseball card and we remember a minor league games (not involving Cal Ripken) that didn’t want to end and what one fan had to do to catch the end of it. We check the short list of MLB players from New Hampshire (it’s quick) and look at numbers if everybody played at Coors field throughout baseball history. In our main segment we chronicle the man who is thought to be the grand father of the knuckleball, Toad Ramsey. His story was made for Two Strike Noise, childhood injury, drinks alot, played while is disguise after being kicked out of a game…only two of those things are true but they could all happen to him. Wax Pack Heroes takes on some 1990 cards where one of us pulls our favorite and least favorite player of all time.

The 1981 MLB season was known for two things, a strike and Fernando-mania. Dodger fans went crazy for a 20 year old, left-handed screwballer who captured the interest of the Latin fan base of LA as well as the Rookie of the Year & the Cy Young! There were songs written about him, cereal boxes with his face on them & strikeouts. Lots of them. We talk everything El Toro. Plus, we remember the anniversary of Homer at the Bat & find out some players who turned down a chance to be drawn onto Mr. Burns team of ringers. Major League Baseball’s taking a break for the All Star Game but we’re not! Some familiar names were taken during the MLB Draft this week, a familiar name is now the Yankees hitting coach, Elly De la Cruz runs wild and what was awesome and what wasn’t from the All Star festivities. New year, new history. We start it off right by comparing prices on Cameo and try to figure out why Hall of Famers are so undervalued on the platform. Real important stuff. Christopher Fredrick Wilhelm von der Ahe might have one of the longest names in baseball history. He never picked up a bat or threw a ball but he was one of early baseballs most important owners. He pioneered the fan experience in ways that are still around today. He also wore spats on his shows, always traveled with his 2 greyhounds and changed managers at a pace that would make George Steinbrenner blush. Alot to unpack this week! It is the quintessential off-season show. Word games, baseball and wrestling cross overs, big guys stealing bags, disasters at large hotels and of course the obligatory Rickey Henderson factoid. In out main segment, we relive the first month of the Baltimore Orioles 1988 season. It was over before it started really. The O’s found new and inventive ways to lose 21 straight games to start the season. We’ll remember them all as well as some of the ways players and fans tried to break the streak. Tom Sturdivant spent 10 years pitching in Major League Baseball for several different teams, but his greatest success came while he was with the New York Yankees. There he won 2 World Series & maybe even better than that, he became life long friends with men like Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, Whitey Ford and many more legends of 1950’s baseball. Tom Sturdivant IV, Tom’s grandson with whom he was very close with, joins us to tell us some of the stories his grandfather told him as well as his own personal experiences meeting some of these legendary players. Ron LeFlore is the only player to have lead both leagues in stolen bases. Until this week that was about all we really knew about him. Now, we know alot more. He was discovered while playing in a prison baseball league, because, well, he was in jail. Form the exercise yard to Tiger Stadium LeFlore went on to become an All Star but he could not escape his old life. Hear the whole story or watch the ABC made for tv movie One In A Million. Opening Day is lurking and we’re getting ready as we continue to enjoy the World Baseball Classic and some incredible games. We also appropriately discuss some of Elston Howard’s contributions to the game, Japan cracking down on cracking pepper and the spring Koshien tournament is in full swing in Japan, and we have our first set of debuts for the season. Our main story this week is the larger than life former MLB umpire (not Eric Gregg) Ron Luciano. From shooting out players on the bases to chatting them up at homeplate, Luciano probably had more fun than anybody else on the field. We recount many of his stories. Before Jim Abbott, there was Hugh Daily. He was a fiery, one handed, Irishman who was one of the first pitchers to throw over hand. The biggest problem with having Hugh on your team though was, nobody liked him. His penchant for causing a train wreck mixed with striking out batters made him popular with fans, but much less so with his teammates. This week former player & manager Bobby Valentine joins us to talk about his career. We talk about his infamous disguise in the dugout (we also find out it was not the first time he had gone undercover),  managing & playing with our all-time favorite players, how many times he deserved to be tossed and George Steinbrenner did WHAT to the visiting clubhouse at Shea Stadium during the 2000 World Series? Happy Opening Week to those who celebrate. Alot of historic firsts this past week with new rules and big performances. We hear from some of our favorite players on the rule changes and some familiar names with new jobs this year. We get political about MLB blackouts, and ofcourse we check in with our boy Lars Nootbaar and see what condiments he’s going to be rocking in the MLB this season. We’re back at it this week where we discuss a former show favorite who was cast in the original movie production of Grease but turned down the role. Who was it? Then we dive into the Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee’s final ballot and go through all of the numbers as well as some other equally important things about each player like quality of nicknames, controversies and ofcourse pop culture relevance. Taking all of that into account, we have two new Hall of Fame members that will no doubt open the flood gates for some other players that have been left out for one specific reason. Don’t blame us! We couldn’t forgive ourselves if we didn’t start the new year off without paying tribute to the one and only Betty White (ofcourse related to baseball). Then we do what we do best, talk about Rickey Henderson and Nolan Ryan. One fateful day in May, two of the greatest players to ever put on a uniform did something that might not ever be equaled again in a single day in baseball. Author John Vampatella joins us to talk about his new book, The Forgotten Game, which chronicles Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS.
