21 Jun 2020022 - The strong and vulnerable women00:45:43
Welcome to today's podcast episode, Jo and Paula wanted to look at how strong women can also be hugely vulnerable, and at times feel powerless. Just because someone appears strong in adversity, doesn't mean they won't find certain situations difficult. For some they become someone else and struggle to find their voice. They don't speak up and end up compromising themselves, this can go on for many years. Today Paula and Jo are joined by Dylis. Dylis is a successful business woman, having held senior positions in Barclays and running her own business for the past 20 years as an International Sales and Marketing leader, coach and speaker. She achieved this success despite her difficult childhood; living for many years with a father that drank too much, followed by a very very difficult first marriage. She indeed had many challenges to deal with. Dylis took on the role of an adult at a very early age and this role carried on into her adult life, having had to deal with physical and mental abuse. She used her work, her children and her positive Mindset to cope and become the woman she is today. Let's find out how Dylis's responsibilities led her to become a strong woman, yet at times vulnerable, dealing with similar difficulties faced by her own mother. 13 Oct 2019005 - Through the eyes of the drinker00:43:26

Welcome to episode 5 of The Two Roads Travelled Podcast. Today you'll get an alternative view of alcohol misuse, a different perspective maybe one you might not have heard before or that might make you second think an alcoholic. No one chooses this path, not everyone becomes an alcoholic, it’s a bit like not everyone is diabetic. But the survivor’s try to help others because they have the real understanding, and a way of giving back in their own recovery.

Today we have John McMahon with us talking about his experience and the addictive personality linked so closely to addiction and the way it affected him and people around him at the time. John is a trained counsellor, ex university lecturer and recovering alcoholic. John runs Bottled-up with his wife Lou supporting those affected and their families. Offering an online membership as well as one to one sessions.

06 Sep 2020027 - Inside details of drink spiking00:41:01
Today in the podcast Jo and Paula will be talking about drink spiking.  In the interview Paul and Jo will be discussing what it is, what happens when someone is spiked, how do pubs and other drinking establishments react and what can we do to prevent this. Joining in the conversation with Paula and Jo today is Dawn Dines. Dawn has worked for Children’s Services, and for nearly 7 years was a residential social worker. This involvement fuelled her desire to help young people. The fears expressed to Dawn by parents and children about drink spiking motivated her to do something about the hugely under-reported crime. She came to realise it is a massive problem in which both the fear of being spiked, and the crime itself can impact on families. In the interview Dawn will be telling us which is the most popular way of spiking, and it's not the one you might think! Here are some links for Dawn if you'd like to get in touch with her: https://stoptopps.com https://www.sosuk.org.uk https://www.sosglobal.org If you'd like to feel connected in a safe place with others just like you, join the Daughters of Alcoholics Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/daughtersofalcoholics Sometimes you just need to speak to someone, if you want a chat with Jo about something you're struggling with, click here to book a call: https://cozycal.com/joannehuey42 In the meantime, you can have a look at this brochure that answers and explains some of the basics of dealing with a drinker. It's the awareness he now has as an adult that has made him realise how much resentment he had.

24 Nov 2019008 - Alcohol and Social Norms00:51:21

Welcome to episode 8 of the Two Roads Travelled podcast. We're talking about social norms. Yes alcohol is legal, yes it’s the way we celebrate and commiserate, relax and unwind. But how long is it before anyone crosses the invisible line into addiction? Kieron James joins Jo and Paula today to share his experience and knowledge. James is a former pub manager and was dependent on alcohol, until he quit 8 years ago.

He worked in and around substance misuse either through peer group facilitation or working in front line services. James setup a coaching business that would help people after addiction service programmes have run their course.

This is an area that Jo and Paula believe is extremely important, the detox is the easy part it's coping in life that is the most challenging. This episode isn't about demonising alcohol, and saying that people shouldn't drink, but to be more responsible with it and how they treat others that struggle with alcoholism.

05 Jul 2020023 - Domestic abuse and alcohol misuse01:03:31

How often is domestic abuse spoken about? The amount of negativity and shame that surrounds domestic abuse can mean that many do not speak up about it. They hide the fact they are victims. What impact does this have on the children in the relationship? The ones who may not be physically hurt although witness horrific situations and a breakdown in their parent’s mental health. What support do they gain as they transition through their teenage years and an adult when they are following similar patterns as it is all they know?

Jenny is a business coach working with directors to ensure resilience and sustainable growth. She is passionate about supporting business owners who are survivors as they are often overlooked due to them seeming like they are a success and not in need of support. Jenny is a survivor of a lifetime of domestic abuse that transpired to an alcoholic parent who was suicidal. With Jenny’s experience of mental health, alcohol misuse and domestic abuse both as a child and an adult, she's the perfect person to interview about domestic abuse and how alcohol misuse can be missed.

27 Oct 2019006 - The family trauma00:51:46

Welcome to episode 6 of the Two Roads Travelled Podcast. The repercussions on a family living with or who have lived with alcoholism can be huge, taking behaviour and thoughts from childhood into adulthood as well as from relationship to relationship, without even knowing it. The trauma that families face is complex and often undetected, many experience PTSD either first hand or second hand, often not being dealt with until later in life, if at all. You could be living your life on high alert, never really being your true self, being fearful, judgemental and struggling to trust people. Jane Evans joins Jo and Paula to discuss these matters. Jane is a trauma expert, working with those that have experienced domestic violence, mental illness, family breakdown, addictions, often with a long history of trauma and abuse. Jane is a regular expert guest for debates on LBC Radio, BBC 5 Live, BBC Scotland, and on many global podcasts. She also travels the World speaking, training, coaching and writing.

Please be mindful that this podcast may cause some triggers for you, so remember to get in touch if you need support, go to your GP or ask loved ones around you to help if you need it.

01 Nov 2020031 - Rebuilding Broken Relationships00:53:56
Welcome to the second to last episode of the series. In this episode Paula and Jo are talking to Elliott about repairing broken relationships. Something that many families of drinkers find very difficult to do. When you live with or are affected by someone's drinking, you endure a lot of heartache and heartbreak. Watching someone you love destroy themselves with alcohol, being let down, lied to, manipulated and someone's physically and mentally abused. You can understand then why for some families, it seems like an impossible task to find forgiveness and when relationships break down, it can be a long process to repair them. Elliot joins in the conversation today to share his story of how he rebuilt the relationship with his Dad, after many years of alcohol abuse. He now enjoys a sober life and they have rekindled a new relationship. 15 Nov 2020032 - In recovery: Life after the booze00:55:53
This is the very last podcast episode of the series and for the time being. Paula and Jo have decided to take a break from podcasting. It seemed appropriate to end on an episode about the journey of recovery from active use to abstinence. The only person that Paula and Jo wanted to interview was Harry, if you have been following the podcast, you'll know that Harry was the very first person Paula and Jo interviewed, so it seemed reminiscent of the first ever episode. Harry has now been in recovery since 18th March 2019, so around 18 months. He now enjoys better health and is sleeping a lot better, he now has a relationship with his children, lives in a nice place, he has his finances under control and he is able to engage with people and behave in a polite way. Many of these things were not possible when Harry was deep into his alcohol addiction. He has come a long way and is able to enjoy his hobbies and is actively involved with Alcoholics Anonymous on a daily basis, who support him in his recovery. The journey of recovery is one that has peaks and troughs, there is much to learn if you want to ensure you keep your sobriety and many stop and start over the years. Thankfully Harry is here to tell Jo and Paula about his experience, so let's hear how's he's got on since his interview last year. Jo and Paula are very keen to learn more as giving someone their voice back is a powerful tool and one that should be treasured.

Paula and Jo will be chatting to Ryan about resilience in children, covering topics of internal and external resilience. Discussing the interventions and preventions that can be put in place as well as the 7 C's of resilience. Ryan works in the field of alcohol and drugs, supporting young people, young adults and families to make and sustain positive changes for themselves, their families and their community. Ryan believes it's important to contribute to what he feels is one of society’s most damaging problems, the effects of trauma and how that it needn’t negatively play out within adolescence and adult lives. In the beginning of Paula's recovery, Ryan played a key part of her journey which in turn has given her the determination to change her life around and the drive to reach out and help others do the same. 18 Aug 2019000 - Two Roads Travelled Introduction00:14:37
Hello and welcome Jo and Paula are two sisters, who have experienced living with and being affected by alcohol and we had different ways of dealing with life and the complications it threw at us. Being at polar ends of our coping strategies, after many years we've come to the same agreement, alcohol needs to be discussed and put out there because it damages and kills. We chose "Two Roads Travelled" to identify the different paths that family members can take when being affected, you are unique and your journey is your own.   The purpose of the podcast is to raise awareness about the impact of alcohol misuse on families, educating  everyone about alcohol addiction, discussing news and views to change  perceptions and judgements. Changing and influencing social norms. Opening the  conversation outside of the immediate and into society. There are no limits of  discussion that we wouldn't take part in and encourage others to do the same.  Alcoholism needs to be an education to others.  We can't wait to share, connect and support you in whichever way we can. You only need to listen to this introduction if you're new to the podcast. 24 May 2020020 - Different experiences of siblings in an alcoholic home01:00:14
Welcome to episode 20 of the Two Roads Travelled podcast, the topic of discussion today is the different perceptions and experiences held by siblings in the same family. When there is a parent that drinks too much, why is it that the siblings all see the situation different, and find different coping strategies? Paula and Jo will be chatting to Nicole, she shares her story about living with her father who drank heavily. Nicole is originally from Western Australia, she has two brothers who she grew up with, and 4 other step/half siblings all of which are younger than her. She grew up with a violent alcoholic father, which Paula and Jo also experienced. Nicole's mother left her father three times, finally making the break when Nicole was only 6 years old. She now lives in London and has done for the past 19 years with her husband, she also writes for a living. So with all the various experience between Nicole, Paula and Jo as daughters of alcoholics, this conversation will be interesting to find out how differently they all perceived their childhood Get in touch on Instagram: @johuey_acoa or follow on Twitter @joanne_huey If you want to know more about alcohol misuse, find out answers to the many questions you have and learn some tried and tested self help tips from the child of a alcoholic then order a copy of Jo's book Transition here: bit.ly/JHtransition. Today Jo and Paula will be talking with Dr Giles Croft and Sam Wilde on the person beneath the addiction. Giles is a psychology graduate and former NHS surgeon who stepped away from clinical practice 15 years ago. His curiosity about the human condition led him to coaching and to dive deeper into how our psychology really works. Sam works with people to create their dreams/goals whilst understanding their true nature. This allows them not only to be successful in what they're looking for but it creates a reality where they feel free from their own thoughts, emotions and allows them to be fully seen and heard.

14 Jun 2020021 - Impact on the mental health of children of alcoholics00:38:41
In episode 21 Jo and Paula are chatting to Suzannah Butcher about the impact of living with a parents drinking on your mental health. For many people living with a parent that struggles with drink isn't specific to their childhood, but runs well into their adult life. Often those impacted don't make the connection between their child experience and their adult challenges and strengths. This is one of the topics Jo is particularly interested in, there isn't a lot of evidence out there about this, although there are known characteristics of adult children of alcoholics. Suzannah is the adult child of an alcoholic. The impact of growing up with parental alcoholism had a profound effect on Suzannah’s mental health and she has struggled with complex PTSD and anxiety for most of her life. Suzannah now works as an EFT tapping practitioner and a mental health advocate, supporting and improving the mental health of others. 23 Aug 2020026 - Codependency in families of alcoholics00:43:09

This episode Jo and Paula are talking to Lisa Boucher about co-dependency. This is a very large topic to discuss and affects most people that have lived with someone's drinking.

When people are co-dependent, their focus is on the drinker, much like the drinker's focus is on the alcohol. The parallels between the drinker and the family can be seen in lots of ways.

The discussion will cover what co-dependency is and how family members can so easily get caught up in it. As well as that, Jo, Paula and LIsa will be looking at those parallels, how it impacts on adult life and the family members after the drinker has sought recovery.

Lisa Boucher, Author of the Multi-Award Winning book, Raising the Bottom: Making Mindful Choices in a Drinking Culture. As a recovering alcoholic, she has been sober for thirty-one years and understands the complex nature of addiction and how childhood trauma is often at the root of what ails us. A registered nurse, Lisa believes that traditional healthcare does little to incorporate the mind-body connection, nor does our current culture appreciate the healing power of nature.

18 Oct 2020030 - Alcohol and spirituality 00:48:04
Paula and Jo will be chatting to Christine in this episode, all about alcohol and spirituality. You might think the two couldn't be more opposite ends but when people are in recovery it's the ONE thing that can keep them sane. Lots of people have misconceptions about Alcoholics Anonymous and that the group is a cult and very much focused in religion. It isn't either of those things. People fear what they don't know. In this episode Jo and Paula will discuss with Christine how her drinking impacted on her spirituality, what the connection is between AA and spirituality and comparing the two as well as barriers to spirituality. 19 Jul 2020024 - People Pleasing in Families of Alcoholics00:38:34
It's episode 24 and the last one of series 3. Jo and Paula are chatting to Lori about the very common struggle for families, people pleasing. When you grow up in a household where a parent drank too much, children can often do whatever they can to please their parent, to get their approval. All the while losing themselves along the way. If they're good and perfect, then maybe they won't drink. Sadly, it isn't about what anyone else does but as a child you just don't understand that. Lori Bruton lives in Western New York, is the mother of two grown sons and the adult child of an alcoholic. Lori is a passionate, faith-filled, fun-loving entrepreneur who shares her stories and adventures about love, travel, faith, fun, writing, essential oils, wellness, and living the Oola Lifestyle creating balance in the key areas of your life. She's inspiring, transforming, and enriches many lives. She teaches people how to tell their story, live their purpose, and bring their dreams to life. Let's find out how Lori has used her lived experience to cope with her people pleasing tendancies. 20 Sep 2020028 - What my home life didn't give me, the army did00:45:08
Today in the podcast Jo and Paula will be talking about what our home lives are missing and where we fill those gaps elsewhere. Jo and Paula will be chatting to Natasha about her experience of living with her Mum's various addictions. With lots of tension in her parents' marriage, Natasha assumed the role of the fixer. she had a lot of freedom as a child to do what she wanted, to her that was normal. As she reflects as an adult she can see how her anxiety manifested, worrying about not being collected from school was an example. As with many daughters of alcoholics, safety was an issue for Natasha, which continued into her adult life. She joined the military to avoid her home life, battled anxiety and lost her brother and Mum to Leukaemia. This is a typical example of how the life of a child of an alcoholic can be impacted with anxiety, feeling unloved and unsafe and searching for that in other ways. Let's find out more about how the army helped Natasha's journey. 26 Jan 2020012 - Addictive Personality Disorder00:47:07

It’s time for episode 12, it’s not uncommon for those that find themselves with an addiction to alcohol, getting addicted to other things. Why is that? Why do some people get addicted and others don’t? Is that to do with them as a person or something else?

In this episode we’ll find out from Dr Mindy Bartlett. Dr Bartlett holds a Doctorate in Education and is CEO of Essential Drug & Alcohol Services (EDAS).  She has over 20 years' experience working in the field of addiction and in that time has gained a huge insight into the multi-dimensional perspectives of drug and alcohol use and the levels of complexity for the individual user, their family and the community. We hope you enjoy this episode, we certainly did!

15 Dec 2019009 - Non-drinkers = Boring?00:47:51

Paula and Jo would like to introduce Melissa who is joining them to discuss the topic of non-drinkers. Melissa made a conscious and some might say contentious decision to give up drinking. She works as a coach and helps to inspire her clients to embrace making their own choice's in life and being empowered. This will be a very interesting conversation that Jo and Paula are keen to explore. Making a choice of not wanting to drink or being a non-drinker can raise its own problems, like having to explain yourself with justifications or being thought of as boring and no fun, when in actual fact it can be quite the opposite. Paula and Jo are very passionate about taking back your power and the growth that comes from within yourself, with the knock on effect to raise your self-esteem and confidence.

26 Apr 2020018 - Alcohol Misuse, Mental Health & Dual Diagnosis00:42:46
In episode 18 Jo and Paula are chatting to Natasha Chant about mental health and alcohol misuse, including dual diagnosis. Natasha's a registered mental health nurse. She's worked in inpatient and community settings and currently works in a mental health drop in centre in Dorset. It's an out of hours' self-referral centre for anyone to access support for their own mental health or carers to access support for themselves. I have the privilege of working alongside peer specialists who offer their lived experience alongside clinical expertise to offer visitors space to focus on their strengths and consider how they can move forward safely to access other services. I'm passionate about providing a service for everyone in a self-defined crisis, this derives from my own personal experience of growing up living with adults with mental illness and wanting to empower others to feel they have some control over how they can move forward from their crisis. With Natasha's experience of mental health and alcohol misuse, she's the perfect person to interview about dual diagnosis and how alcohol misuse and mental health are so intrinsically linked. 04 Oct 2020029 - Bullying, fitting in and alcohol misuse00:48:21

It's time for episode 29 of the series, and Paula and Jo are talking to Jane about bullying and how fitting in at school was at the very start of her relationship with alcohol.

Jane now helps stressed mums in Bournemouth, and globally via online platforms, to get Clear, Calm, and Confident, through effective online Life Coaching courses, Confidence Coaching sessions and Holistic Therapies.

For many children fitting in is really important and there are many ways they do that, for some, once they've chosen alcohol it can be the start of a longer relationship with it that they could have never foreseen.

In today's episode they'll be sharing how alcohol can be used as a crutch, and without realising it become something so much more. Looking at how available it is and how it's rarely frowned upon because it's so acceptable in society. No one starts of using alcohol because they want an addiction, it grows over time.

12 Apr 2020017 - Human Story Theatre on Alcohol Misuse00:39:51
In this episode Jo and Paula are chatting to Amy and Gaye, they set up a company called Human Story Theatre, bringing real life issues to the stage. They met over twelve years ago while on a medical role-play job, in Oxford. Together, and separately, they work as role-players and facilitators in teaching communication skills to medical students, qualified nurses, doctors and midwives. Alcohol misuse is one of those topics, Jo has had the pleasure of being on the Q & A panel for their play Dry. The play demonstrates the relationships two parents have with alcohol, shifting from social drinking to dependence, all the while affecting their daughter Chloe. The play hits the spot in terms of portraying what it's really like, the impact and offering hope of recovery.
