Thanks to her father, the Belgrade-raised Popovic was introduced to the blues at an early age, through his wide-ranging record collection and jam sessions hosted at the Popovic home. Born on May 13, 1976, Popovic took up guitar when she was a teenager and formed her first band, Hush, in 1995. Within a year, with the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe, she was playing blues festivals in Greece and Hungary and working as an opening act for American blues masters, including Junior Wells. Popovic recorded her debut album with Hush in 1999, when she also moved to the Netherlands to study jazz guitar and world and pop music at the Conservatory of Music. She had the chance to see blues guitarist Bernard Allison at a club in Germany. He asked her to come on-stage and jam at the end of the show. While Allison invited Popovic to join him on a tour, she had to get back to the Jazz Academy in Holland. Allison asked for a copy of Popovic's record with Hush, and he sent it on to executives at Ruf Records in Germany, who were impressed with Popovic's powerful guitar playing and singing. Ruf contacted her to be part of their Jimi Hendrix tribute compilation, and then signed her to a recording deal of her own. Several months after this, she was on her way to Memphis to record Hush! The album was well received by blues radio programmers and the non-blues purist segments of the American, European, and Canadian blues festival circuits. In the spring of 2001, she performed at the Memphis in May Festival alongside Bob Dylan, the Black Crowes, and Ike Turner. Within five years of leaving Yugoslavia, Popovic, now in her late twenties, had the chance to perform at many of the major European blues festivals, including Peer, Bishopstock, and Notodden. Along the way she's sat in with the likes of Allison, Michael Hill, and Kenny Neal. Popovic has two albums out on the New Jersey-based Ruf Records America label, Hush!, released in 2000, and Comfort to the Soul, her 2003 release. Jim Gaines and David Z., who have worked with other blues-rockers, including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Santana, and Jonny Lang, had roles in recording and mixing both albums. 15 Nov 2022 | Instrumental and Classical Holiday Selections! | 01:17:22
Mannheim Steamroller - A Fresh Aire Christmas Mannheim Steamroller—the multi-Platinum-selling neo-classical group founded by Chip Davis—is best known for popular reworkings of classic Christmas songs. ∙ Born into a musical Ohio family, Davis composed his first piece at age six, played in the University of Michigan’s concert band, and became a junior high music teacher. ∙ He cocreated the character of C.W. McCall, whose 1975 trucker-rebellion single “Convoy” topped Billboard’s Country and Pop charts and inspired Sam Peckinpah’s like-named 1978 film. ∙ Mannheim Steamroller’s debut album, 1975’s Fresh Aire—featuring classical music played on electric bass and synthesizers—was a hit with audiophiles due to its high-tech sound. ∙ The band’s first collection of holiday classics, 1984’s Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, rose into the Billboard 200—and by 2004 the album had sold more than six million copies. ∙ The Mannheim Steamroller LP Fresh Aire 7 won a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album in 1991. ∙ In 2019, the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Tour celebrated 35 straight years, with two different touring troupes, plus a third group that performed at a popular Florida theme park.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Eve and Other Stories Symphonic rock group Trans-Siberian Orchestra has blended heavy metal bombast, classical music composition, and pyro-and-lasers theatrics into their Platinum-selling LPs and explosive live shows. ∙ Thanks to the radio success of seasonal smash “Christmas Eve / Sarajevo 12/24,” the band’s debut LP, 1996’s Christmas Eve and Other Stories, has been certified triple-Platinum. ∙ Their double-Platinum sophomore album, 1998’s The Christmas Attic, hit the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top Holiday and Top Pop Catalog Albums charts. ∙ Throughout the 2000s, the band performed for over 5 million fans at more than 700 concerts, landing them within the Top 25 on Billboard’s Top Touring Artists of the Decade list in 2009. ∙ With 2009’s Night Castle and 2015’s Letters from the Labyrinth, they scored back-to-back No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart. ∙ “Forget About the Blame (Moon Version)”—featuring guest lead vocals from Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale—became a Top 40 rock radio hit in 2015.
Inspired by gothic rock and other obscure sounds, Midnight Syndicate creates darkly blended compositions that also display their pop/rock style influences. The band sustains its dramatic musical scenarios not only by way of their common musical inspirations, ranging from Black Sabbath to King Diamond, but also by a shared wish of portraying the darkest edges of existence. Oskar Sala Piece Played - Diagram - Five Short Pieces for Trautonium German inventor/composer Oskar Sala is best known for his role in developing the Trautonium: one of the earliest electronic instruments and a contemporary of the French Ondes Martenot and Russian theremin. While the Trautonium would eventually be viewed as a relic of electronic music's past, the instrument's tonal quality and expressive capabilities remain sadly unparalleled in the technology that followed. Nearly 70 years after its creation, its legacy seemed highly uncertain, as Sala was the only one capable of playing it. Born in Berlin in 1910, Oskar Sala was introduced to the Trautonium in 1929. That year, while studying under composer Paul Hindemith, Sala attended a demonstration of the instrument given by its inventor, Friedrich Trautwein. The student soon began working alongside Trautwein, undergoing a crash course in electronics to develop the prototype into an acceptable model. The new instrument was unveiled at a christening performance of Hindemith's "Trio Pieces for Three Trautonia" at the music academy in Berlin. Resembling a simultaneously archaic/futuristic version of the piano, the Trautonium replaces keys with two wires that run the length of the keyboard. These wires, hovering above metal rails, are what the musician plays, altering the subsequent tones via a multitude of dials and switches. The initial, overwhelming success of the instrument is rather surprising given the political environment of the time. Nazi Germany had begun the ethnic and cultural cleansing that would drive many artists (including Hindemith) out of the country. Not only did Sala's Trautonium escape being squelched, the government actually provided funding for additional models including the Radio Trautonium (showcased across German airwaves on a weekly program), the Volks-Trautonium (a failed attempt at a household model), and the portable Concert-Trautonium, which Sala took on tour. Following the Second World War, with Trautwein having all but relinquished control of the instrument, Sala developed the Mixture-Trautonium, a revised model which gave the musician the ability to produce musical undertones. The 1950s found Sala busy composing, producing works for television ads and feature films, and performing with fellow Hindemith student Harald Genzmer on the new model. Yet Sala's general failure to collaborate with his electronic music contemporaries probably contributed to his relative obscurity. He did, however, receive his 15 minutes of fame. In 1961, unsatisfied with the effects sound technicians turned up for his film The Birds, director Alfred Hitchcock enlisted Sala's help. Pleased with the results, Hitchcock turned over the film's score (a non-musical construction) to the composer. In the electronic boom that followed in the 1970s, the Trautonium attracted attention from Krautrock acts Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. In 1987 Sala was honored with the Filmband in Gold for his soundtrack work. As the century drew to a close, Sala (approaching his 90th birthday) spent his days diligently practicing, composing, and experimenting on the Mixture-Trautonium from a studio near his home. A staggering 600-plus reels of tape are said to exist in the composer's personal vault. In the late 1990s, Germany's Fax label issued two collections of Sala performances: My Fascinating Instrument (1995) and Subharmonic Mixtures (1997). ~ Nathan Bush Trautonium https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mzc3d_qcNYs Rick Estrin awards 2013 Blues Music Award best instrumentalist harmonica 1994 Blues Muisc AwardSong of the year My Next Ex-wife 2020 Blues Music Award Instrumentalist harmonica Rick Estrin and the Nightcats Members

Links to stuff we talked about: Hanson mmmBop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYPawE4IJYs Hanson Too Much Heaven https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfFmXBwMI2c https://www.britannica.com/art/a-cappella a cappella, (Italian: “in the church style”), performance of a polyphonic (multipart) musical work by unaccompanied voices. Originally referring to sacred choral music, the term now refers to secular music as well. The a cappella style arose about the time of the composer Josquin des Prez, in the late 15th century, and reached preeminence with Palestrina in the late 16th century in the music that he wrote for the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican. Because no independent instrumental parts were written, later scholars assumed that the choir sang unaccompanied, but the evidence is now that an organ or other instruments exactly “doubled” some or several of the vocal parts. By the 17th century, a cappella music was giving way to the cantata, for which parts were written specifically for instruments as well as for voices. 23 Jul 2024 | Beth Hart: The Unstoppable Voice of Blues Rock Revisited! | 00:54:55
Discussed in this episode: Thanks to @Ben-Schulman on YouTube for the information! BETH’S BACK STORY: All of Beth’s songs are personal and delve deeply into themes of addiction; drugs & alcohol; abusive relationships; death & suicide; love; Scott (her husband of 23 years); her siblings & parents; living with mental illness; survival; playing music; and striving for happiness… She is a humble but wickedly talented artist who is raw, transparent, and completely honest with her audience. Some of the many personal and professional challenges she has endured and overcome: • Parents divorce when Beth is about 5 years old. • In psychological therapy starting at age 7. • Experiences a violent home invasion and robbery. • Father gambles the house away; abandons family; imprisoned for tax evasion. (The song “Try a Little Hard” off her latest album is about her dad and gambling). • Beth is an alcoholic by age 11. • At 12 years old, she’s in a “relationship” with a 40 year-old man (The song “Woman Down,” off her latest album, is about this). • At 15 she takes off for Brooklyn, NY to live with a violent 25 year-old man. • Arrested & briefly jailed for DUI. • At 16, back in LA, she’s asked to leave a prestigious music school because of poor attendance (caused by her staying out all night long to sing in South LA clubs). • In a string of abusive personal relationships. (She’s written many songs about this theme, but “Caught Out in the Rain” and “Fire on the Floor” are two superb examples). • When Beth is 22, an older sister Sharon dies of AIDS at age 32. (The songs “Skin” and “Sister Heroine” are about her sister Sharon). • Officially diagnosed with Bi-polar I mental disorder around age 27. • As musical career begins to explode in 1999 with the hit single “LA Song,” Beth weighs just 92 lbs. and nearly dies due to drugs, alcohol, and anorexia. • Atlantic Records drops her from the label by 2000. • Long-term drug & alcohol addiction and series of stays in rehab and psyche wards. (Her song “Isolation” is about being in a psyche ward; “Spiders in My Bed” is about living with bipolar mania). By late 2000/early 2001, Beth is completely out of the music business. (1) 2023: The most recent documentary is “Bad Woman Blues” (60 min; a German production) from fall 2023: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9Fjr2HTGdY (2) 2005: “Beth Hart Documentary” (from the 2005 ‘Live at Paradiso’ DVD; 32 min. plus 8 min. song): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFHisbCrqdg. This early documentary is from the time of Beth’s re-emergence and comeback into the music scene in Europe with the 2003 “Leave the Light On” album and legendary Paradiso concert in May 2004. (3) 2018: “The Beth Hart Story: From Los Angeles to Amsterdam” (32 min): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGkubyOS7jw. This documentary aired on Dutch TV in 2018, following Beth’s big-time, sold-out, appearances at the Royal Albert Hall in London (5,300) and the Ziggo Dome (17,000) in Amsterdam earlier in the year. (4) 2020: “Beth Hart’s Soulful Tale of Survival and Redemption”(22 min): https://spectrumnews1.com/ca/la-west/la-stories/2020/02/17/beth-hart-s-story-of-survival-and-redemption# . This is a terrific “career retrospective” type piece that aired on LA TV host Giselle Fernandez’s “LA Stories” in 2020. (5) 2022: PBS’s “Soundcheck: Beth Hart” (27 min.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSfBq3bGEHw. This is a short interview/documentary based on a recent NJ concert from summer 2022. Songs
