Well, the news is light this week, so we’re trying something different again. We’ve been teasing a mega breakdown saga from listener Wunuvakind in recent weeks and it turned out to be far too long for the listener feedback segment. So, I’m sure much to her surprise, Wunuvakind’s story is featured on the show. I enjoyed it immensely and I hope you do to.

As for the news, we talk about a new bill pushing tax credits for most truckers, new roundabout rules, CARB is slowing it’s electric truck expectations, and an autonomous truck gets sidelined by bird poop. All those stories, plus more.

No American in the 1800's could have possibly imagined vehicles that were 13' 6" tall, over 70 feet long, and weighed 80,000 pounds. And that's what makes Trucking in the Northeast such a challenge. Today, I tell the story of one such night and the chaos that ensued. And I use the word A-hole a lot… A LOT. Not the potty-mouth version though. I actually say "A-hole." Today I briefly talk about why I don't leave my truck to go exploring very often. There is a reference to Jake's Famous Crawfish in Downtown Portland, Oregon though. Because it was just that awesome. But really today's episode makes me reach down inside myself to see if I have an artsy-fartsy side. So basically, this is here to get @darkstaff, @alanqbristol, and @DriverChrisMc to quit bugging me about never taking any pictures. But again, this is an audio podcast, so you'll have to go to the Web site to watch the video and see the pictures I took of Carhenge, which is America's piss-poor attempt to copy Stonehenge. All the pictures were taken and edited with the totally awesome Camera+ - tap tap tap">Camera+ app and the video was taken with a Flip Mino HD camera.

In today's episode, we discuss what happened to my former employer, Yellow, Inc. Why did they go out of business after almost 100 years? Was it the Teamsters fault like the CEO of Yellow said? Or was it Yellow's fault like the President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said.

Spoiler alert: I don't have any special inside knowledge, but I do have opinions based on working for both the company as a driver and the Teamsters as an Alternate Union Steward.

Today's topic springs from something I mentioned in passing on the last podcast, called Honor Among Truckers. I've got some kind of weird fascination with understanding the obsession drivers have with their driver's seat. Since I'm so confused about this, I actually ask more questions than I provide answers. So have a listen and let me know why YOU spend so much time in the driver's seat. Also, since this subject is very broad, it's rather short. No worries though. I filled in the time with an extra long intro explaining why the podcast is out late. Because I know you were biting your nails about it and all. *smirk*

We don’t have a main topic today, but we do have a mega crap ton of news, some listener feedback, and a fun contest that could win you $50.

So about this news; we’ve got a handful of truck recalls, Canadian ELDs, lots of driverless trucks being ordered, some useful tips for tax time, another reroute around a busted bridge, and yet another safety blitz (yes, really). But hey, all is not lost. We'll also tell you what qualifies as an out-of-service violation when it comes to lights and hours-of-service. This one might surprise you. We’ll even discuss how some of these violations are actual crimes! Whaaaa?

We’ll address some myths around the COVID vaccine and if you’re still freaked out, how to clean your truck to reduce your chances of getting it. But hey, at least you won’t die from a truck rollover if this prototype fifth wheel makes it to market!

And once again, the powers that be are making truckers unhappy with talks of the new Vehicle Miles Traveled tax, the push for speed limiters and automatic emergency braking, and why DOT physicals still won’t go directly onto your CDL for years to come. Not to mention the courts ruling against lease operators and a survey showing not much faith in the Biden administration. But hey, at least a new FMCSA director has been nominated. So there’s that.

And to finish up, we’ll show you how to value your time more, how to extend the life of your DPF filter (yes, I realize that’s redundant), and I’ll tell you about a new addition to the Garmin dēzl™ OTR series of truck GPSs and a new feature they all have.

Apparently, the FMCSA is considering making Sleep Apnea testing mandatory for overweight truckers. Since statistics say that 73% of truckers are overweight, this could definitely be a problem for drivers. Doug Thomas, a freelance writer for The CPAP Shop helps us understand what Sleep Apnea is. There are also references to Kevin McKague's new travel blog called, Kevin's Untitled Travel Blog.

As for feedback, Kevin points us to recent travels he's had at an abandoned turnpike and tunnel near Breezewood, PA and a bike ride to a New Hampshire beach, complete with Instagram pictures. President Biden wants to fortify the supply chain while the FMCSA warns truck drivers of massive job losses. All while thousands of drivers are being lost to drug testing. Yeah, that makes sense.

This was going to be long enough to constitute its own podcast and, 2.) I didn't know enough about this subject to answer the question. If you could get winter truck driving tips from anyone, who would it be? How about someone who drives a 155,000-pound,12-axle tractor trailer on mountainous, snow-packed, two-lane roads nearly every day? Well, I found such a person. Even better, I commenced to bribe, cajole, and generally badger him into coming onto the Trucker Dump podcast to share his experience with you. I may have even threatened to set bear traps for his dogs. Don't judge. Gotta do whatcha gotta do.

Kevin Lowery has been driving big rigs in Alaska for 23 years of his 28-year career and he's learned a thing or two about getting around in the snow and dealing with extreme cold temperatures. In today's podcast, we discuss how to get your rig and yourself ready for winter, how to keep from having maintenance issues, and what to do if you have them anyway.

We also talk about the best heater settings to use, how to drive on the snow, and how to keep from getting stuck when you park for the night. Lastly, we talk about how to install tire chains properly and when you should and shouldn't use them.
