13 Jul 2011 | TD071: Hell Week 2: The Sequel | 00:17:13
We start out today's podcast by mentioning Twitter friend, @darkstaff, since for some odd reason he was looking forward to my rant about a horrible week I recently had while out on the road. The weirdo. And since this is titled as a sequel, I naturally refer back to the original "Hell Week" podcast/blog. Also mentioned is the last podcast/blog "Post-Hell. Pre-Hell." and one of the best things about Colorado, Twitter friend @alanqbristol. And since 7 days isn't enough to rant about, I throw in an extra day to boot. Lucky you. 29 Jan 2023 | TD188: A Trucker's Breakdown Saga, Tax Credits For Truckers, New Roundabout Rules, Bird Poop Vs. Autonomous Truck, & More | 01:28:20
Well, the news is light this week, so we’re trying something different again. We’ve been teasing a mega breakdown saga from listener Wunuvakind in recent weeks and it turned out to be far too long for the listener feedback segment. So, I’m sure much to her surprise, Wunuvakind’s story is featured on the show. I enjoyed it immensely and I hope you do to. As for the news, we talk about a new bill pushing tax credits for most truckers, new roundabout rules, CARB is slowing it’s electric truck expectations, and an autonomous truck gets sidelined by bird poop. All those stories, plus more. In the listener feedback segment, Charles, Farley, and William all just want to say hi, Driver Dave is back to scolding me again, and Cici shares her favorite Trucker Dump episodes. 17 Jun 2013 | TD094: Understanding the New Hours-of-Service (HOS) Rules | 00:26:53
There are three new Hours-of-Service rules that are going to hit truckers on July 1, 2013. Do you understand them? Well, I was lucky enough to be put on them a couple of weeks before the deadline (that's called sarcasm), so I can help you with that. There are some pictures of my e-log unit that you might want to look at to help you understand what the heck is going on. There are also references to two of my other podcasts/blog posts, TD91: Bungling the 34-Hour Rule and TD82: Are All These Changes Good for the Trucking Industry? The intro and feedback section of this episode has been highjacked by Chris. He wrote in with not one, but two corrections and a comment on TD93: The Driver's Seat Phenomenon. 29 Sep 2020 | TD149: Job-Hopping In Trucking | 01:41:32
Today’s main topic is job-hopping. How much is too much? Stay tuned. But as always, we’ve got some news to cover including voting info, brake recalls, safety blitz stats, nuclear verdicts, trailer technology, broker scams, truck warranties, and think pieces on being an owner/operator and ANTs. Huh? The FMCSA has also been busy with hairy drug testing, driver advisory panels, under 21 drivers, driver training exemptions, and yet another COVID HOS exemption extension. Wow. Say that three times fast. And we’ll top it all off with six restaurants for the Trucker Grub segment, and listener feedback on weapons, railroad crossings, man vs. beast, and driving school experiences. 13 Apr 2010 | TD041: Trucking in the Northeast | 00:14:30
No American in the 1800's could have possibly imagined vehicles that were 13' 6" tall, over 70 feet long, and weighed 80,000 pounds. And that's what makes Trucking in the Northeast such a challenge. Today, I tell the story of one such night and the chaos that ensued. And I use the word A-hole a lot… A LOT. Not the potty-mouth version though. I actually say "A-hole." Hey, I have a hard enough time getting listeners without donning the Explicit tag. I also mention the "Too Stupid to Fuel?" podcast/blog in case you missed that one. 01 May 2022 | TD160: Really Late Trucking News | 02:24:31
Well, I’ve been holding onto this episode with the hopes that I’d be able to include a main topic, but that’s still in the works. So I guess there’s no logical reason to keep hanging onto all this old news. Some of it isn’t all that relevant anymore, like the whole Canadian border thing and Covid news. But there’s also some more relevant topics here, including all the typical stuff like recalls, more safety blitzes (not the NFL version), moving forward with both the infrastructure plan and futuristic trucks, drug and health updates, and of course, all the things our government is up to. Additionally, Scott Gunter a.k.a. Killjoy gives me a chance to drool all over his submission for the Trucker Grub segment. This time around, most of the listener feedback segment consists of new drivers wanting to join the Trucker Dump Slack group, but two long-time listeners also pipe in on mechanical woes and YouTube videos.

21 Dec 2010 | TD060: Truckers vs. Cops vs. DOT vs. Carriers | 00:16:06
This one was prompted by a run-in with a police officer who can only be described as a giant jerk. Well, that is without having to put the "Explicit" tag on the show. In order to explain why I ended up in this predicament, I briefly explain how the 70-hour rule and the 34-hour restart rules work. You'll learn what double-booking is, and we'll wind it up by explaining how all these factions work against each other. Got a second to Rate and/or Review the podcast? 05 Mar 2012 | TD083: A Trucker Visits Carhenge | 00:11:19
Today I briefly talk about why I don't leave my truck to go exploring very often. There is a reference to Jake's Famous Crawfish in Downtown Portland, Oregon though. Because it was just that awesome. But really today's episode makes me reach down inside myself to see if I have an artsy-fartsy side. So basically, this is here to get @darkstaff, @alanqbristol, and @DriverChrisMc to quit bugging me about never taking any pictures. But again, this is an audio podcast, so you'll have to go to the Web site to watch the video and see the pictures I took of Carhenge, which is America's piss-poor attempt to copy Stonehenge. All the pictures were taken and edited with the totally awesome Camera+ - tap tap tap">Camera+ app and the video was taken with a Flip Mino HD camera. The music in the video is a song by Walking On Einstein, which just so happen to be the same guys who you hear every episode in the intro and outro. You can download and keep both songs for free if you want to hear the whole songs! Thanks for allowing this, cool rocker-dudes! In the feedback section I talk about you peeps leaving links within the comments section of the blog. 13 Mar 2009 | TD002: A Rare Day in Trucking | 00:07:18
There are certain days out on the road that a trucker will never forget. Sometimes it's a bad memory; sometimes it's good. In today's podcast, I try to redeem myself for starting out Episode 1 with a rant by telling a story about a great day behind the wheel of my big rig. I somehow manage to compare it to a video game and I may or may not discuss a flying building. Check out the pictures! Got a second to Rate and/or Review the podcast? In today's episode, we discuss what happened to my former employer, Yellow, Inc. Why did they go out of business after almost 100 years? Was it the Teamsters fault like the CEO of Yellow said? Or was it Yellow's fault like the President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said. 27 Aug 2009 | TD024: Friendly Truckers Haven't Vanished | 00:07:55

We also introduce the new feedback section to the podcast. Listeners and readers like you write in and I read your comments and respond with a comment, an answer, or a bit of snark. 16 Dec 2009 | TD034: Why I Do This | 00:11:53
Today's podcast was prompted by a surprising berating from another trucker on Twitter. I'm kinda glad he did it though, because it gives me the opportunity to explain why I waste so much time on this podcast/blog and Twitter. In the feedback segment, Jason, Oz, and Clyde leave their thoughts on truck transmissions. Pam and neuLindsay both pipe in, and Heidi expresses her amazement that she wasn't bored reading one of my articles. Heidi's wedding blog, called Truly Engaging, gets a plug too. And lastly, I share why comments from experienced truckers are not only wanted, but NEEDED. Got a second to Rate and/or Review the podcast? 04 Mar 2017 | TD120: Truckers And Exercise | 01:03:24
Ever wonder how truckers stay in shape out on the road? Well, truth be told most of them don't. But Jeremy wrote in asking how it's done. He's curious because he's thinking about truck driving as a career and doesn't want to let himself go. He asked me a bunch of questions about truckers and exercise and I do my best to answer him. Links in the intro: TD119: Winter Driving Tips With An Alaskan Trucker was the last show. If you missed it, go back and check it out. It's got some great tips for driving in the snow and ice! 17 May 2012 | TD085: Time to Step Up and Help Some Fellow Truckers | 00:11:16
In today's episode, I put the word out to help out some Twitter friends who got in a pickle due to some medical issues. And I tell you why you should help Lou and Heather, a.k.a @trkrsvoice. Heather's blog post called "Your Back Doesn't Always Have Your Back" explains the situation more fully. Her Web site is The Trucker's Voice. Her YouTube channel and a funny video is mentioned and so is Trucking Santas, an organization that Heather and Lou started to help less fortunate families at Christmas. In association with Trucking Santas, they both work with the United Cerebral Palsy of Central Maryland. There is a reference to a fundraising site, but the time limit has expired. 27 Jan 2019 | TD135: Trucking Recruiters... Friend Or Foe? | 01:25:00
In today's main topic, we discuss whether trucking recruiters are friend or foe? My views on the subject might surprise you. But before that we’ve a tribute to a friend, a couple of funny videos, and DriverChrisMc will point you to some good Mexican food in the Trucker Grub segment. We’ll discuss fancy pants new trucks from Volvo and Freightliner and what’s this about a truck with no mirrors??? Lots of other topics including trucker fatalities stats, a truck parking update, facial recognition for truckers, and a major construction warning in the south. And of course, we’ll talk about the trucker who got beaten by security guards and we’ll talk about what qualifies as “adverse weather conditions” when it comes to log books. We’ll also look at some length-of-haul stats and what that means, and we’re going to figure out if it’s true that truckers are considered unskilled labor. In the feedback section, David will clarify something from the last podcast about hourly pay, BSHarlan1971 leaves an iTunes review, and screaminbob weighs in on the Weight My Truck app (see what I did there) and the Trucker Path app that we talked about in the last podcast. 02 Feb 2010 | TD037: Typing Mad at the TSA | 00:13:52
I don't think I've ever been quite so mad in my trucking career than when I was writing this blog post. Luckily, by the time I got around to recording the podcast version, I'd managed to regain my Fonzie-like coolness. So what prompted this rage? Some of the stupid rules truckers are forced to comply with, especially us team drivers. Trust me, no one is ever happy when The Evil Overlord's sleep gets disturbed. Today I tell a story of a run-in we had with the wonderful folks at the TSA. Got a second to Rate and/or Review the podcast? Download the intro/outro songs for free! courtesy of Walking On Einstein. In today’s show, California’s AB5 just won’t go away; getting paid-by-the-mile is coming under fire; truckers, drugs, and drug testing is always a hot topic; and I’ll tell you where is the worst traffic in the world and the US is (the answer might surprise you). Also, how likely is the US going to be ready for electric trucks by 2045?; I’ll tell you about the new type of eco-friendly fuel; we’ll discuss new ways to avoid low-clearance accidents; and one source says the worst of this inflation mess is behind us. All that and more news. Plus, we’ll hear from a new listener in the feedback segment and I’ll introduce you to Cici, who you’ll be hearing from in quite a few upcoming episodes. In this episode we talk to Ben Lee, president of Make-A-Wish for the Susquehanna Valley, who tells us about the awesome, Guiness World Record holding, Mother's Day Truck Convoy event. But before that, I talk about a few articles I saw involving California emissions, a new Hours-of-Service bill, and a horrible truck crash. I also point you to a cool gift for a trucker. I also have a nice, long chat with Dave Meltzer, a Principal at one of our sponsors, East Insurance Group. Believe it or not, we have a non-boring chat about truck insurance. And in Trucker Grub, Driverchrismc is back with another excellent restaurant. In the feedback section, Aaron and Greg have comments about C.R. 03 Jul 2017 | TD122: 4 Awesome Trucker Workouts | 01:21:00
This episode is a continuation of TD120: Truckers And Exercise where I answered listener Jeremy's questions about exercising out on the road. TD122: 4 Awesome Trucker Workouts takes that further by telling you about some workout apps and methods I've used over the years. But before I get to the exercising junk, I talk about the new Kenworth T-680 I'm driving and my time on the road with nephew Jacob. I even go off on a tangent about rap music and the people who listen to it. We also discuss a couple of road rage incidents involving truckers and I issue a warning about signing onto Uber Freight. In the feedback section, Mike and Chris had comments on truck driving simulators, Kyle tells us a bit about how Walmart operates, Greg has a suggestion for a portable shower, and Brian the Aussie sent in an audio comment that dives into everything from the US DOT rules to my relationship with my nephews. Links mentioned in the podcast: I read about two separate road rage incidents recently on TheTruckersReport.com, prompting me to me promote a podcast I did called TD66: Truckers Go Turtle Racing. Here are the stories:

TD81: How To Do A Full-Body Workout Inside The Cab Of A Semi shows two workout videos I produced a while back. No need to wear eye protection. I'm wearing a shirt. In the feedback section: Mike and Chris talk about truck driving simulators. Kyle writes in to share his thoughts on why Walmart drivers might be getting all this extra pay that other OTR drivers aren't. Greg gives us a link to the Zodi Outback Gear Extreme Shower, which his wife uses at her Renaissance fairs. Brian the Aussie sent an audio comment that covers a variety of topics, including the US DOT physical rules and Personal Conveyance time, which prompts me to talk about go on a mini rant. He also shows some appreciation for the podcast having a "Clean" tag, which lets him listen with his daughter around. Cool! He also wonders about my situation with my nephews since I talk about them so much. I happily explain. 28 May 2013 | TD093: The Driver's Seat Phenomenon | 00:20:31
Today's topic springs from something I mentioned in passing on the last podcast, called Honor Among Truckers. I've got some kind of weird fascination with understanding the obsession drivers have with their driver's seat. Since I'm so confused about this, I actually ask more questions than I provide answers. So have a listen and let me know why YOU spend so much time in the driver's seat. Also, since this subject is very broad, it's rather short. No worries though. I filled in the time with an extra long intro explaining why the podcast is out late. Because I know you were biting your nails about it and all. *smirk* As for the feedback section, I jump over to JobShadow.com and answer a few questions from people who read my interview over there. And by the way, my commenters over there seem pretty happy with how helpful my interview was, so if you're interested in becoming a truck driver, click on the link above, have a read, and ask me any questions you might have, just as Paul, Frank, and Shelley did. Paul asks how an accident will affect his job prospects, Frank asks for company recommendations, and Shelley writes in with concerns about her ability to learn to drive a truck. Other links mentioned in today's podcast are TD91 Bungling the 34-Hour Rule, Netflix, Playstation 3, and @darkstaff's Twitter page (for leaving a nice review of the show on iTunes). 14 Jan 2023 | TD186: Teamsters Vs. UPS, California’s Massive Truck Shutdown, FMCSA Busy Rejecting Stuff, & More | 01:11:12
Well, we’re back to our normal news-focused show this week. We’ve got lots of news to catch up on, including how California shutting down a crapload of trucks is going. Is the new Tesla semi already having problems? The FMCSA is staying super busy with both denying and accepting requests. I’ll catch you up on that. What else? Trucking jobs are slowing down, there’s a new tax guide for owner-operators, young truckers and truck parking are both back in the limelight, I’ll tell you about the ongoing battle between UPS and the Teamsters (and why it’s important), and the Biden Administration makes a statement that won’t make most truckers very happy. All that news and more, including @wunuvakind coming back to share a great cafe in the Trucker Grub segment. In the listener feedback segment, we've got new Trucker Dump Slack Group members, @driverchrismc questions my website building skills, and a listener needs your help finding a particular kind of trucking app. Introduction Links:Get the Trucking Ebook Combo Pack for 50% off for a limited time! 25 May 2021 | TD154: Trucking News And Free Stuff! | 01:58:07
We don’t have a main topic today, but we do have a mega crap ton of news, some listener feedback, and a fun contest that could win you $50. So about this news; we’ve got a handful of truck recalls, Canadian ELDs, lots of driverless trucks being ordered, some useful tips for tax time, another reroute around a busted bridge, and yet another safety blitz (yes, really). But hey, all is not lost. We'll also tell you what qualifies as an out-of-service violation when it comes to lights and hours-of-service. This one might surprise you. We’ll even discuss how some of these violations are actual crimes! Whaaaa? We’ll address some myths around the COVID vaccine and if you’re still freaked out, how to clean your truck to reduce your chances of getting it. But hey, at least you won’t die from a truck rollover if this prototype fifth wheel makes it to market! And once again, the powers that be are making truckers unhappy with talks of the new Vehicle Miles Traveled tax, the push for speed limiters and automatic emergency braking, and why DOT physicals still won’t go directly onto your CDL for years to come. Not to mention the courts ruling against lease operators and a survey showing not much faith in the Biden administration. But hey, at least a new FMCSA director has been nominated. So there’s that. And to finish up, we’ll show you how to value your time more, how to extend the life of your DPF filter (yes, I realize that’s redundant), and I’ll tell you about a new addition to the Garmin dēzl™ OTR series of truck GPSs and a new feature they all have. What? I told you there was a lot of news. Did you think I was lying? Oh yeah, I nearly forgot. I'm also giving away this Trace tablet from FleetUp to the first person who emails me at TruckerDump@gmail.com Listen to the podcast version or read the full article and the podcast show notes on AboutTruckDriving.com or search for Trucker Dump in your favorite podcast app. Be sure to check out the 25% off ebook combo pack for Trucking Life and How to Find a Great Truck Driving Job while you're there.

28 Sep 2021 | TD157: The First 6 Months Of Trucking - Part 2 | 03:07:03
We’re back with Part 2 of the interview with Zach Smacher, about what it’s like for a new trucker in their first 6 months. We left off with a cliffhanger, so that’s where we’ll pick it back up. But first we’re going to talk about the FMCSA’s new rules about COVID extensions and how they’re bending over backwards to get new truckers into the industry. We’ll also talk about President Biden’s vaccine mandate and how that’s going to affect the trucking industry. And in related news, how to get your own authority if you want to sidestep the mandate. LOL What else? The pros and cons of working for a union shop, no government money for truck parking, higher per diem rates starting soon, lower Social Security benefits expected in the future, a naughty fuel card company, changes to an age-old technology - the CB, and with winter coming up, I’ll point you to a great resource for chain laws state-by-state. In the listener feedback segment, we’ll congratulate a new CDL holder, help another potential new trucker, and a couple of drivers want to discuss hazardous materials handling. Dr. Alexander E. Underwood works at KT Health Clinic near Springfield, MO. He can be reached at 855–943-3518 or email him at mail@kthealthclinic.com.

In today's episode of the world famous Trucker Dump Podcast, we discuss why podcasts are so perfect for truckers. I also talk about losing my Kenworth and I share a funny quote from a million mile safe trucker I met. Driverchrismc tells us about a Mexican restaurant in the Trucker Grub segment and he also corrects me about Oregon speed limits. I point you to a couple of excellent health resources and fun little game I've been addicted to lately. I also discuss taking on sponsors for the show and we have an interview with one of them, Citadel Fleet Safety. In the feedback section, we hear from not one, but two Jeffs. One clarifies the CRST CDL exemption and the other shares his thoughts on reaching truckers about how great podcasts are. Taylor asks about trucker seats, while I share one of our Slack group conversations that happened when Trucker Bob got screwed by buying a reserved truck parking space. And last, we hear from Roger, who thinks I'm a dick. View the article on AboutTruckDriving.com This episode of Trucker Dump is sponsored by:

Don't know what a lot lizard is? Guess you better get to listening then. I also get nostalgic about Dallas as I talk about my early married life with The Evil Overlord, including our elopement, Metallica's skyscraper rooftop house, and someone's first visit to a gay bar. 06 May 2013 | TD092: Honor Among Truckers | 00:24:58
Ever heard of the concept of Honor Among Thieves? Well, there's something very similar in the trucking world. Today we discuss three specific areas where drivers trust each other beyond what common sense tells them they should. I also compare some 4-wheeler's driving to a scene from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. And I should warn you. Avoid this podcast at all costs if you don't want to hear me butcher a perfectly good Journey song. In the intro, I tackle a couple of administrative details concerning the Web site and I correct a goof I made multiple times in the last podcast called, Bungling the 34-Hour Rule. In the feedback section, Chris, Fargoguy, and smoothjazz share their thoughts on the blog post/podcasts called, The Spitting "Christian" Zealot, Arguing E-logs, and E-logs: Do They Really Increase Driving Time? 06 Apr 2020 | TD143: Coronavirus Trucking | 02:16:33
Well, you can probably guess what today’s podcast is all about, and unfortunately it ain’t fluffy kittens. Nope, for today’s main topic I’ll be rebroadcasting an episode of the Payload Podcast where JT Peters talks to an epidemiologist about Coronavirus and how it relates to us truckers. But before that, we’ve got lots of news on how this pandemic is affecting the trucking industry; including suspended and forced rules, how truckers are gaining new respect, and some clarification on the $2.2 trillion stimulus plan. And of course, what you should do if you think you’ve got the virus. But it’s not all about the Corona. We’ve got an update on new HOS rules, autonomous trucks, truck parking, and new high-tech maintenance ideas. Also, a major data breach and tips for being in an accident. In the feedback segment, we’ll talk about ignorant commenters, under 21 truckers, tailgating, and kitchen utensils. In today's podcast we try to understand the purpose of the CSA, the latest and greatest *NOT* endeavor to raise safety standards in the trucking industry. You know… because that's necessary when truck accidents are at a 60 year low. *eye roll* And since I'm often wrong about junk, my Twitter friend @MightyDeno straightens me out on a point. And since Jean McHarry (the author of the last podcast/blog) hasn't received enough stalkers yet, here's her information again. 10 Jan 2013 | TD089: Truckers with Sleep Apnea: How to Know If You Have It and What to Do About It. A Guest Post by Doug Thomas | 00:19:27
Apparently, the FMCSA is considering making Sleep Apnea testing mandatory for overweight truckers. Since statistics say that 73% of truckers are overweight, this could definitely be a problem for drivers. Doug Thomas, a freelance writer for The CPAP Shop helps us understand what Sleep Apnea is. There are also references to Kevin McKague's new travel blog called, Kevin's Untitled Travel Blog. As for feedback, Kevin points us to recent travels he's had at an abandoned turnpike and tunnel near Breezewood, PA and a bike ride to a New Hampshire beach, complete with Instagram pictures. Lisa writes in concerning The Spitting "Christian" Zealot podcast/blog and @DriverChrisMc writes in with an ever-so-mean slam about the Eddie Rabbitt Was Right podcast/blog. 09 Apr 2021 | TD153: Truckers And Tax Time | 02:02:42
In today’s show, we discuss truckers and their taxes in an interview with Mason War, CEO and Co-Founder of COS Accounting & Tax. Lots of good info on 1099 drivers here. But first, we’ve got the obligatory Covid-related news including more extensions and vaccines, the Canadian Electronic log roll-out, lawsuits involving Prime,Inc., sleeper berth pay, and independent contractors, and I’ll tell you when to expect the next safety blitz. The government has been busy too, with pushes for underride guards, speed limiters, mileage-based taxes, and more truck tolls. President Biden wants to fortify the supply chain while the FMCSA warns truck drivers of massive job losses. All while thousands of drivers are being lost to drug testing. Yeah, that makes sense. Thankfully we have listener feedback to cheer us up; from Danny, Taran, Shawn, and of course Stevie. Today we talk to Dave Dein, a co-founder of The Next Generation In Trucking Association, which is a non-profit organization who’s goal is to get more young people interesting in trucking and logistics careers. What they’re doing is pretty cool, so you’ll want to stick around for that. But first we’ve got more news than you can haul without a permit, including a dangerous social media game involving truckers, changes to the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse that could affect your livelihood, more on autonomous vehicles, a proposed electric vehicle tax, a new device that fleets could use to restrict driver’s use of cell phones, and of course, a whole bunch about the impending vaccine mandate. Also, money for truck parking is back on the agenda, care packages for the troops are requested, warehouses are full, the problem at the seaports, more on the lease-operator legal issue, the history of the owner-operator, and legislating bathrooms for truckers. Yes, really. The Trucker Grub segment gets a retraction, and listener feedback features a whole mess of new Trucker Dump Slack members, gear recommendations, and me getting scolded. What’s new? LOL

Lucinda read the blog post called "Go to Bed Angry" and wrote in to ask for advice on riding along with her trucker-husband after the kids are out of the house. I realized two things: 1.) This was going to be long enough to constitute its own podcast and, 2.) I didn't know enough about this subject to answer the question. Therefore, I called upon two Twitter friends, Patricia Powers (@luv18wheels) and Sabrina (no longer on Twitter) to give Lucinda some advice. 01 Mar 2019 | TD136: The Emotions Of Changing Truck Driving Jobs | 02:18:00
Man, we’ve got a colossal show today, headlined by me sharing the emotional rollercoaster I’ve been on lately as I prepare to change truck driving jobs. But before that, we’ve got interesting stuff like Dustin’s Trucker Grub segment on some good BBQ and some long lost listener feedback from Keith, who talks about hourly pay and has a military analogy to truck training, Scot has comments on the podcast and a question about driver suicide, and Mark sent in a audio clip about why there’s so much confrontation between drivers. But of course, we’ll start out with a bajillion news stories regarding such things as truck idling regulations, concealed carry in a truck, speed limit changes, updates on the truck parking situation, and what changes our benevolent regulators would like to focus on within the trucking industry. And speaking of things that don’t work, we’ll also be discussing electric truck technologies, truck tolls, autonomous trucks, 1099 drivers, and trucker protests. And to round out the news and bring it all back around to emotions, we have two stories, one of lost love and money and the other on found satisfaction in mentoring others. And of course, I'll be announcing the winner of the Trucker Dump tee shirt for filling out the Listener Survey. Please fill out the Trucker Dump Podcast listener survey! In today’s main topic, we’ve got the first part of a 2-part interview with a new trucker about his first six months in the industry. Lots of good info here for anyone looking to get into the industry. But first we’ve got a couple of recalls, soon-to-be obsolete electronic log devices, possible new vision standards from the FMCSA, and yet another COVID exemption extension. We’ll also talk about the FMCSA’s new driver advisory panel’s first meeting and we’ll hear some reactions to it. We’ll discuss electric vehicles, slack adjuster no-nos, and more truck parking coming to Indiana. 31 Jul 2018 | TD130: How Much Should Truckers Bend The Rules? | 01:59:27
I was in a situation recently and got called out by a friend for my actions. To me it was a technicality. To him it was a blatant lie. In today's podcast, I tell that story and the situation surrounding it. I'll let you decide. We also cover some trucking legislation stuff, the rise of guaranteed driver pay, more about truck parking, and something called Bus and Dump (which I’ve never heard of before). I’ll also point you to a test to figure out your driving personality. Trucker Grub is still hanging on by a hair. And I talk to Classic Truck Insurance about becoming an owner operator and getting your own authority. In the feedback section we discuss parking, sleeping, McGyvering your truck, and a fellow trucking author. View the article and show notes on AboutTruckDriving.com. Check out new Trucker Dump merchandise at TeePublic.com, including tee shirts, hoodies, mugs, stickers, tote bags, and even kid's clothes (not that any sane person would put their kid in a Trucker Dump shirt)! 15 Feb 2011 | TD063: E-logs: Do They Really Increase Driving Time? | 00:11:46
We all know that electronic logs are being implemented to try to keep truckers from cheating on their paper logs. To try to convince us drivers how "great" these e-logs are, most every company tells them that e-logs will save them time and therefore, give them more miles and money. So is this true? We answer this question in today's podcast… well sort of. Got a second to Rate and/or Review the podcast? Download the intro/outro songs for free! courtesy of Walking On Einstein. In the listener feedback segment we’ll hear about hatred of elogs, a driving school and training story, COVID vaccinations, and I get called out by a 15-year-old. 16 Jul 2020 | TD146: Personal Safety For Truckers | 02:11:16
Boy oh boy, have we got a good show today. We’re going to talk about personal safety tips for truckers and some of you are going to be a part of it. But before that we’ve got news stories about truck drivers and protestors, inspections and ELD coercion, more deadline extensions, and electric trucks. We’ll also talk about health issues including sleep apnea and amputees getting CDLs. Marijuana use is on the rise too, which makes sense with the insane changes to liability insurance the government is trying to make. We’ll also discuss the government owning part of a major trucking company through a controversial bailout deal and how changes in routing could change the future for truckers. In today's episode, we're actually talking about the wonkiness of a truck driver's schedule. I also talk about the length of the podcast and how that's going to change over time. 10 Aug 2021 | TD155: Yes, More Trucking News | 02:25:56
Got a whopper of a show for you today, but once again, there is no main topic. I promise this isn’t a new trend. I’ve got some good things lined up for the next few episodes. But for now there’s a fairly long intro where I talk about my company’s hazmat issues, per diem tax breaks, adverse driving conditions, other trucking podcasts, and driving a fancy car. In the news segment, we’ve got more truck recalls, yet another safety blitz, bridges reopening, toll plazas closing, rising driver pay, new insights into driver shortages and women’s affect on it, and what to do if you don’t pass your DOT physical. Also, our governments are working on taxing truckers more, more COVID extensions, proposed legislation on speed limiters, sleep apnea, liability insurance, and infrastructure, all while putting the kibosh on the highway trust fund. Huh?? Oh, and teaming with a robot. Double huh?? On a lighter note, Pilot Flying J is giving away prizes this summer, there’s a popular movie about truckers on Netflix, and in not so light news, a fleet owner has a controversial idea on how to increase safety. I’ll also announce the winners of the Trace tablet and the $50 for the Trucker Grub contest and we’ll hear from listeners on the topics of truck parking, speed limiters, the VMT tax, Walmart reefers, a longtime trucker retiring, and we’ll catch up with a past interviewee and see what’s up with him. 19 Apr 2013 | TD091: Bungling the 34-Hour Rule | 00:27:58
In today's episode, we discuss how the new 34-hour rule will affect truck drivers when it rears it's butt-ugly head this coming July. Merged into this story is a mystery solved. What could possibly make me, possibly the least adventurous trucker in the world, take a 1.2 mile walk to take his first-ever ride on a city bus? Click the play button and find out. 26 Jan 2012 | TD082: Are All These Changes Good for the Trucking Industry? | 00:16:46
There are a lot of changes going on in the trucking industry right now. There are new Hours-of-Service rules lurking, new texting and cell phone laws, the CSA, and of course, the cursed electronic logs. So how are they going to affect things? I give my predictions in today's podcast, including saying something that just plain hurt to say out loud. I'd like to thank @TameraGeorge1 for sending me a link to an article that helped explain one of the new HOS rules. In today’s main topic, I’ll share 3 Trucking Apps Every Trucker Should Have and tell you why they're so awesome. But there's so much more! We’ll also be discussing news stories about truck recalls, tolls, impending new emissions standards, HOS of proposals, and whether driver pay is the key to solving every problem in the trucking industry. I’ll tell you where you’re most likely to get a moving violation, and speaking of violations, we’ll be discussing the sentence that was handed down to the Pilot executives. The tiniest of progress has been made to stop the exploitation of truck booting, so that’s good. Look out for some changes at your local Road Ranger too. I’ll point you to a couple of articles to help you curb your road rage and improve your professionalism. And we’ll finish up the news by sharing a Trucking charity and finding out about a possible exemption for narcoleptic truckers. Whaaaa? In the Trucker Grub segment, Dustin is back to tell us where to find some great clam chowder, and Lindsay, Chris, and a whole bunch of David’s share their thoughts about everything from gross truckers, to driver rules, to driver pay, to a book of science fiction short stories set in the trucker universe is. I am smarter than a 5th grader though… sometimes. Oh, and I heard a rumor that I take a stab at singing in this episode. Hey! Where are you going? Stop running! 16 Jan 2017 | TD119: Winter Driving Tips From An Alaskan Trucker | 02:08:04
If you could get winter truck driving tips from anyone, who would it be? How about someone who drives a 155,000-pound,12-axle tractor trailer on mountainous, snow-packed, two-lane roads nearly every day? Well, I found such a person. Even better, I commenced to bribe, cajole, and generally badger him into coming onto the Trucker Dump podcast to share his experience with you. I may have even threatened to set bear traps for his dogs. Don't judge. Gotta do whatcha gotta do. Kevin Lowery has been driving big rigs in Alaska for 23 years of his 28-year career and he's learned a thing or two about getting around in the snow and dealing with extreme cold temperatures. In today's podcast, we discuss how to get your rig and yourself ready for winter, how to keep from having maintenance issues, and what to do if you have them anyway. We also talk about the best heater settings to use, how to drive on the snow, and how to keep from getting stuck when you park for the night. Lastly, we talk about how to install tire chains properly and when you should and shouldn't use them. Lastly, we talk about the Ice Road Truckers show and what most Alaskan truckers think of it. And be sure to stick around for the after show to hear a few minutes of us joking around after we were done recording the interview. It's quite funny! Links mentioned in the podcast: Here is the PDF of Winter Driving Heater Settings we talked about. Download it for free and keep a copy handy for the next time the weather turns nasty. Windshield Washer Fluid Booster De-icer Additive Slushbuster Winter De-icing Strips Diesel Air Brake Antifreeze and Conditioner According to Kevin, this tire chain installation video is the best one he could find. It covers many different kinds of chains… and no stupid bungee cords! Show info: You can email your comments, suggestions, questions, or insults to TruckerDump@gmail.com. 29 May 2009 | TD019: Always Check Out a Trucking Company's Safety Program | 00:05:42
Welcome to the podcast with the world's worst title. Seriously folks, somebody must've smacked me with a 2X4 the day I came up with this title. Clearly my brain wasn't operational at the time. The topic is important though. We discuss how a company's safety practices can affect the driver and what to look for in a company's safety program. And I try to contemplate whether or not safety is overemphasized or not. Got a second to Rate and/or Review the podcast?
