25 Nov 202322. The Highlander Movies (1986 - 2007)01:17:20

“There can be only one” ☝️

Ah, if only the producers of the original Highlander movie had followed these words of wisdom from the character of Connor MacLeod and not made any inferior sequels 🍿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Podcast hosts Stephen & Paul are big fans of the original Highlander movie (1986) having rented the video back in the eighties. Stephen seen its sequel (The Quickening) at the cinema in 1991 and gave up on the series after that. Paul has seen all five films.

The boys decided to rewatch and reassess the films to decide which they think are worthy of the Highlander name, and which should be cut from the franchise ✂️ So, popcorn in hand, the following were viewed:

- Highlander (1986)

- Highlander II The Quickening (1991)

- Highlander III The Sorcerer (1994)

- Highlander Endgame (2000)

- Highlander The Source (2007)

Is The Quickening as bad as Stephen remembers? Does Paul have a soft spot for any of the sequels? What does Stephen think of the films he’s not seen before?

So, listen out for discussions about plot holes, bad special FX,  different versions, overacting, bad acting, missed opportunities, and how great the first film is 🎧

Also, we provide relevant movie information like box office grosses, critical and audience reception, budgets, facts and more.

09 Oct 202321. James Bond - The Timothy Dalton Movies (1987 - 1989)01:07:04

“Sanchez - "Problem solver?"
Bond - "More of a problem eliminator." - License to Kill.”

Timothy Dalton took on the unenviable task of succeeding Roger Moore as James Bond in the mid-1980s. Moving away from the light-comedy of the Moore-years, Dalton’s take on the character returned Bond to his darker, literary roots nearly 20 years before Daniel Craig’s similar portrayal in Casino Royale (2006).

Dalton’s Bond tenure is hotly debated. Was he the right Bond, wrong time? Did he have the comedic chops to pull off the Bond quips? Is he underrated? Were you glad to see the back of him (for Pierce Brosnan)?

What is not in doubt is that he left the franchise under a cloud due to A/ License to Kill’s underperformance at the box office B/ Not getting a third movie due to behind-the-scenes legal issues.

With all that said, TTMF hosts Stephen & Paul (HUGE Bond fans) sat down to rewatch The Living Daylights (1987) and License to Kill (1989) to give their thoughts on them, and Dalton’s portrayal. They’ll also provide relevant movie information like box office grosses, critical and audience reception, budgets, facts and more.

“And I thought my jokes were bad.” – Joker

Summary

Like 1989 before it, 2008 belonged to the Batman. The goodwill built up by Batman Begins (2005) and Heath Ledger’s sad, untimely death, made ‘The Dark Knight’ THE film to see that Summer. And it didn’t disappoint, becoming a critical and audience favourite, and the highest grossing movie of 2008.

30 Jul 202319. Mission : Impossible Movies (1996 to 2023) Part One00:47:16

“Your mission, should you choose to accept it…”

In 1996, Paramount took a chance on Tom Cruise & his big screen version of the popular sixties TV show ‘Mission : Impossible’. A gamble that paid off handsomely to the tune of over $4B USD in global box office receipts.

Are all of the movies (7 to date) impossibly good? No (we’re looking at you M:I2). Are some better better than others? Yes. Do they get better as the series progresses? A topic worthy of debate. So…

Podcast hosts & M:I fans Stephen & Paul Nicholson accept the (not) impossible mission to rewatch, critique and rank all the movies, whilst also providing relevant movie information, box office grosses, critical and audience reception, budgets, facts and more.

The movies covered in this episode are:

- Mission : Impossible (1996)

- Mission : Impossible 2 (2000)

- Mission : Impossible 3 (2006)

01 Sep 20229. The Robocop Movies01:02:39

For many people, the original Robocop (1987) movie holds a place in their heart. A film which you & your friends managed to see despite not being old enough to do so. 12 year olds really shouldn’t be watching a cop have his hand blown off by a shotgun! Two sequels followed, though neither hit the same heights as the original.

Revisiting all three films over 30 years later, how do they hold up? Are they all worthy of the Robocop name, or do some, like Dick Jones, need fired? That’s the task hosts Stephen & Paul, plus guests Allan Traynor and Davie Melon have set themselves.

So, join us as we drive around the mean streets of future Detroit critiquing each movie, sharing interesting Robocop facts, playing archive interview & review clips, and decide which movies don't deserve to be part of this series.

26 May 202317. James Bond - The Daniel Craig Movies (2006 to 2021) Part One01:28:06

“I know where you keep your gun. I suppose that’s something.”

A blond Bond! An under 6 foot Bond! A Bond that wears a lifejacket! Daniel Craig’s announcement as the new James Bond in 2005 was not universally welcomed. However, after Casino Royale, he proved the doubters wrong and went on to star in 4 more hugely successful 007 movies, including the highest grossing Bond movie of all: 2012’s Skyfall. The first $1B+ Bond.

But, it’s fair to say, the quality of the movies is variable. Casino Royale (2006) & Skyfall (2012) are almost universally loved. Quantum of Solace (2008) often derided. Spectre (2015) & No Time To Die (2021) are hugely divisive.

Podcast hosts Stephen & Paul Nicholson are HUGE James Bond fans. Join them & their guests, fellow brothers Paul & Davie Melon, for episode 1, where they rewatch, critique and rank Craig’s first 3 Bond movies. They’ll also provide relevant movie information like box office grosses, critical and audience reception, budgets, facts and more.

Come back next month for the concluding episode which looks at Spectre & No Time To Die.

13 Mar 202315. The Scream Movies - Part One (1 - 3)00:46:12

“Hello Sidney, do you like scary movies?”

Scream (1996) kickstarted a hugely successful movie franchise, the post-modern horror genre, and introduced the world to the now ubiquitous Ghost-face.

But how well does the film hold up over 25 years after release? Does its sequel, Scream 2 (1997), match it for quality and entertainment? And does its less well regarded third entry, Scream 3 (2000), deserve its lowly status?

Podcast hosts Stephen & Paul Nicholson are fans of the franchise and watched each movie at the cinema on original release. They now revisit the first 5 movies and its newly released sixth entry to critique and rank them. They’ll also provide relevant movie information like box office grosses, critical and audience reception, budgets, facts and more.

In this pod, they concentrate on the original trilogy (1996 - 2000). Come back next month for the concluding pod which looks at Scream 4 (2011), Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023).
