We tend to receive what we focus on... In this episode we discuss the scarcity mindset vs. the abundance mindset. The corporate world tends to be dripping in scarcity so it is no wonder we carry that with us in everything we do. It serves the employer for us to believe that we are competing for raises and promotions as that motivates people to work harder, right? Scarcity also looks like money worries and believing we aren't good enough or that we would never be able to score another job if we leave the one we're in now. What if I told you money is renewable resource, that there is plenty to go around. And that having a job is simply evidence that you are capable of scoring another one. A lot of the fears and limiting beliefs surrounding taking a career break stem from our scarcity mindset, so in this episode we address it. We also discuss strategies for trying on an abundance mindset. In today's episode I lay out an easy-to-follow plan to start saving money for your trip. In fact, this is great advice when saving for ANYTHING or simply to start taking control of your finances. The first step is to have an awareness of your money situation. If you don't know what is coming in and going out, how are you supposed to make a practical decision around how much to save and what to spend. I should also note, this episode is NOT about cutting out everything excess and avoiding fun until you leave on your trip. That is no way to live. It is entirely too time consuming plan every single day, not to mention, you're not sure how you'll feel by, say, month three, plus it's important to leave room for spontaneity. In this episode I give tips on how to think about the type of traveler you are and how to determine where to go. These are things that will impact budget. Knowing the type of traveler you are and being honest with yourself about it is key to a successful trip. Robin Finney's story is SO relatable! She had a great job and team, but there was something inside of her telling her there is more out there for her. She finally got clarity during a meditation retreat in 2017 and committed to making her travel dreams a reality! Nine months later she left her job of 11 years, sold her belongings, let go of her apartment, and bought a one-way ticket to Australia. Robin completely trusted in herself and this experience and knew that she needed to follow her heart and everything would work out. And it did! Robin solo traveled to 20 countries across 6 continents over a period of 18 months up until the pandemic shut everything down. Today's episode is so inspiring. My guest Emilie Greenhalgh has lived and worked in some of the notoriously most dangerous places in the world all in the act of service. Emilie is a humanitarian aid worker who has lived and worked in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Niger. In late 2019, burnt out from the stress of living in these places and managing huge projects with impossible deadlines, she quit her full-time job to travel the world and write a memoir about her experiences. Then, as we all know, the pandemic shut down the world. Emilie was in Lombok, Indonesia at the time and decided to wait it out on the small island of Gili Air. After she finished writing her book, she wasn't ready to go back to a full-time job that dictated where she lived. She'd always dreamed of becoming a consultant but thought it would only be possible after she'd accrued 20+ years of experience. However, in order to stay location independent, she decided she would give it a try. Two years later, she has so much work that she has to turn down offers. Now, she mainly writes multimillion dollar project proposals for NGOs and does research around gender and social inclusion issues. She has also recently started trauma-informed transformational life coaching and is a yoga teacher. In her spare time, she writes articles for publications such as Newsweek and Lonely Planet. Get ready to be inspired by my guest Cindy Sheahan! In 2017, Cindy realized she wasn't getting any younger, the time was right and, "if not now, when?" so she quit her perfectly good job, packed a backpack and headed out the door alone to explore. Five plus years later, she's been to 38 countries - mostly solo - such as Turkey, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Georgia, France, Italy and North Macedonia. She's visited over 400 cities and towns, countless hostels and homestays, hikes and treks all over the world including the Portuguese Camino. Along the way she's flown in a hot air balloon over Cappadocia Turkey, was a caretaker at a haunted villa in Tuscany, paraglided over burial sites in Madagascar, worked in a vineyard in New Zealand...and met a French paraglider on Tinder while in Nepal trekking, with whom she's traveled to 6 continents. Cindy moved to Portugal in October of 2022 and is living in Porto...for now. She's written for a women's travel group called She Hit Refresh, been featured in The Points Guy and the New York Times, and has been a panelist on a Digital Nomad online summit, and just recently, as a "Move to Portugal" expert in an online seminar by International Living. She has 4 amazing grown kids and one grandson, with another grandbaby on the way - they all live in Colorado and support, admire and join her when able to - and they are her biggest cheerleaders in this crazy adventure.
