05 Feb 2024Can I Travel to Maui Now?01:04:20

In this episode we are sharing all the details of our trip to Maui in March of 2023.  Unfortunately in early August 2023, a series of wildfires broke out on the island of Maui. The wind-driven fires prompted evacuations, caused widespread damage, killing at least 100 people and leaving four persons missing in the town of Lahaina on Maui's northwest coast. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Maui as they rebuild.

Maui reopened for tourists on October 1st 2023, and because their economy relies so heavily on tourism, it seems to be recommended to visit. However, as we discuss in the episode, please give the people of Maui grace as they adjust to their new normal. Be respectful, and be kind.

03 Jun 2024Fun Restaurants and a Cool Hotel in Portand Oregon00:32:07

In this episode of Travel Party of 5, we dive into the vibrant and diverse food scene of Portland, Oregon. Join us as we explore one of the coolest hotels in Portland, Oregon, starting with the stylish Hyatt Centric. This hotel offered a fantastic experience, even allowing me to check off another brand from my Hyatt bingo card. Situated in the heart of downtown, the Hyatt Centric is not only a convenient stay but also one of the coolest hotels in Portland, Oregon.

While in Portland, I had the chance to sample some of the best Vietnamese food Portland has to offer. I had a standout visit to Cuon, a small, unassuming spot that served the most delicious banh mi sandwich I’ve ever had. This little gem truly showcases the best Vietnamese food Portland boasts, with its perfect blend of flavors and fresh ingredients.

Portland is known for its fun and eclectic dining scene, and I got to experience some fun Portland restaurants firsthand. Cartopia was a fantastic food stall area with a variety of choices, from Egyptian/Mediterranean to Pizza to Pad Thai, making it an ideal spot for a group dinner. Another highlight was Lil' Shalom, where I enjoyed delicious Mediterranean dishes like burnt beef ends with hummus and pita.

Of course, no food tour of Portland would be complete without a nod to the iconic Anthony Bourdain. I had the pleasure of dining at Apizza Scholls, a spot Bourdain visited during his time in Portland. The pizza here lived up to its reputation, making it one of the must-visit fun Portland restaurants.

Back at the Hyatt Centric, I enjoyed the hotel's amenities, including a convenient restaurant in the lobby serving breakfast, coffee, and evening meals. This made it easy to grab a bite without venturing far, though Portland’s bustling food scene always tempted me to explore more.

Throughout the episode, I share more about my stay at the Hyatt Centric, detailing why it’s one of the coolest hotels in Portland, Oregon. Its central location made it easy to explore the city, and its industrial-chic vibe added to the overall experience. However, for families planning a trip, I offer tips on choosing the right accommodation to suit everyone’s needs.

Join us as we uncover some fun Portland restaurants and the best Vietnamese food Portland has to offer. Whether you're planning a trip to the city or just a foodie at heart, this episode is packed with insights and recommendations to make your Portland adventure unforgettable. Don’t miss out on hearing about the coolest hotels in Portland, Oregon, and the delectable delights that await you in this fantastic city.

In this episode, we dive into an exciting adventure in Florence, Italy! Join me and my sister Alaina as we recount our amazing experiences during our 3 days in Florence, Italy. This trip was extra special as it was a girls' trip with our mom, leaving the kids and my husband Duane back home. Get ready to explore the beauty, history, and fun of Florence with us!

We kick things off by talking about our flights. My mom and I flew from Phoenix to Florence. Alaina flew from Washington Dulles and met us in London before we all headed to Florence together. Our flights were  all booked on points, they were smooth, and even though we had a few hiccups with luggage, it all worked out in the end.

Our home base in Florence was the luxurious Il Tornabuoni, part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection. This historic hotel, which we booked with points, was the perfect place to stay. It was centrally located, beautifully decorated in Renaissance style, and offered top-notch service. From the terrace with stunning city views to the personalized touches for Elena's birthday, the hotel was a highlight of our trip.

One of the most memorable parts of our adventure was the Vespa tours in Florence, Italy. We were excited to explore the Tuscan countryside on Vespas, but things didn't go as planned - but you'll have to listen to hear what happend. Despite the bumps, the Vespa tour was a unique and fun experience that we won't forget.

During our 3 days in Florence, Italy, we also indulged in a fantastic wine tour. This all-day tour took us to beautiful vineyards and a medieval town. We learned about wine-making, tasted delicious wines, and enjoyed an incredible farm-to-table lunch. The scenery was breathtaking, making it one of our favorite days in Florence.

Throughout our 3 days in Florence, Italy, we made unforgettable memories. Using points and miles to cover our flights and hotel allowed us to splurge on fun experiences like the wine and vespa tours, along with all the gelato and incredible food we could eat.

Amalfi Coast Boat Tour

Where to stay in Sorrento? This is the AirBnB we stayed at!

Today we're diving into part 2 of our Italian adventure, focusing on our stay in Sorrento. Join us as we uncover how to maximize your travel experiences using credit card points and miles, while exploring beautiful cafes in Sorrento and enjoying a day at a stunning beach club.

Our journey starts in Florence, where we hop on a high-speed train to Naples, then switch to the Circumvesuviana, ending in Sorrento. This charming town, near the Amalfi Coast, is perfect for exploring Naples, Pompeii, Amalfi, Ravello, and Positano. Sorrento offers a relaxed atmosphere compared to bustling Amalfi and is more affordable.

We stayed in a cozy Airbnb that was ideal for our party of three. While we usually prefer hotels for their amenities, there aren’t many on points in this area. Plus, our host provided a detailed map of the best cafes in Sorrento, scenic spots, and must-visit locations, ensuring we made the most of our stay.

A highlight was the boat tour to Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi, organized by our Airbnb host. We enjoyed breakfast at a charming cafe in Positano, then headed to Amalfi. From there, we took a bus up to Ravello, escaping the crowded streets of Amalfi for the serene beauty of this hilltop town. The small group size made it even more enjoyable.

Our day at the Marameo Beach Club in Sorrento was unforgettable. This adults-only beach club offers towel service, food, drinks, and comfortable lounge chairs. We relaxed by the crystal-clear waters, read our books, drank crisp local white wine, and soaked in stunning cliff views. It was the perfect way to unwind after days of exploring.

Pompeii was a must-see, and we opted for a guided tour to get the most out of it. The history and preserved ruins were fascinating, and we learned so much from our guide.

When it comes to dining, Sorrento did not disappoint. We had delicious meals, but Enjoy the Little Things Bistro stood out. Recommended by a colleague, this gem in the center of Sorrento offered some of the best food we had on our trip. We loved it so much we ate there twice! The friendly staff, delicious dishes, and cozy atmosphere made it a highlight.

We made extensive use of credit card points and miles to cover travel expenses, allowing us to indulge in these amazing experiences without breaking the bank. From booking flights to securing accommodations, leveraging points and miles made our Italian adventure even more rewarding.

Credit Cards we recommend

Thanks for finding our podcast! We are a family of 5 who does most of our travel using points and miles and we share how we leverage credit card offers to earn a ton of points/miles so we can afford travel as a larger family.

Want to use credit card points and miles to visit Paris?!?! In this episode, join us as we recount our recent 2-day adventure in the City of Lights! Despite the rain, we embraced the charm and beauty of this iconic city, trying to make the best of it despite the clouds.

Our journey began with a delightful dinner at Girafe,  but sadly it was raining so our Eiffel Tower views were scarce indoors.

Day 2 began with a walking food tour, where we indulged in delectable French cuisine and discovered hidden culinary gems. This food tour (linked below) truly felt like we were visiting a Parisian market with a french friend. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Of course, no trip to Paris would be complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower, where we braved the weather to experience the breathtaking views. Even in the rain, she is beautiful. Then we grabbed crepes and coffee near Notre Dame.

On our third day we ventured out of the city for an exhilarating bike tour of Versailles, pedaling through the grandeur of the palace grounds and soaking in the rich history.

The standout for dinner was Le Relais de L'Entrecote for their infamous steak frites.

For a hotel, we stayed at the Hyatt Regency Etoile for zero dollars, all thanks to our use of points and miles. Tune in to hear our tips on how to make the most of your points for a memorable stay in Paris, rain or shine.

01 Jul 2024Scottsdale Staycation (On Points and Miles!)00:25:29

 Follow us on Instagram @TravelPartyof5

Thanks for finding our podcast! We are a family of 5 who does most of our travel using points and miles and we share how we leverage credit card offers to earn a ton of points/miles so we can afford travel as a larger family.

Click here to apply for the Chase Sapphire Cards we refer to in this episode - we used these points to book our hotel on this staycation as well as some flights. And if you've already got one of the Chase Sapphire cards, you'll want to apply for these business cards, linked here.

In today's episode, we're sharing all the details about our recent Scottsdale Staycation. Plus, we’ll dive into how to use credit card points and miles to make the most of your trips.

First, let’s talk about what we did during our Scottsdale Staycation. Every year we book a staycation at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale at Gainey Ranch. This year, we spent two nights in a spacious room with two queen beds and a sofa bed, which was perfect for our family of 5. The highlight of our stay was, of course, the pool. The Hyatt Regency Scottsdale has a fantastic pool area, complete with a sand beach, a waterslide, and even an adult-only pool for some quiet time.

Our plans on this staycation is always just relaxing by the pool, ordering food and drinks, and letting the kids enjoy the water and other activities. It’s always a hit with the whole family!

Now, let's talk about the power of credit card points and miles. We booked our Scottsdale Staycation using Hyatt points, which we earned from our World of Hyatt business card and various Chase cards, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Ink Business cards. Using points and miles can save you a lot of money, allowing you to enjoy amazing experiences without breaking the bank.

For those interested in planning a similar staycation, the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale is a Category 6 hotel, bookable for between 21,000 and 29,000 points per night. Since summer in Arizona is off-peak, we were able to book our stay for just 21,000 points a night. It’s a great value, especially when using credit card points and miles.

During our stay, we noticed the hotel is undergoing significant renovations. The lobby and several floors are under construction, which does affect the overall ambiance. While this didn't impact our pool time, it might be something to consider if you're planning a longer stay or coming from out of town.

The food options at the hotel are currently limited due to the renovations. There is one restaurant open for breakfast, and the pool bar serves as the main dining option for other meals. We enjoyed some delicious food, like a short rib grilled cheese sandwich, but the menu is definitely more limited than usual. On a brighter note, renowned chef Richard Blais is revamping the hotel's food and beverage offerings, which we’re excited to try once the renovations are complete.

Using credit card points and miles not only covered our stay but also made it possible to enjoy this yearly tradition without worrying about the cost. We highly recommend using points and miles to book your Scottsdale Staycation or any other travel adventures. Chase points are particularly useful as they transfer to Hyatt, making it easy to book stays at Hyatt properties around the world.

15 Jul 2024Family Trip to Yellowstone: The Road Trip That Isn't Happening (yet)00:28:15

In this episode - Not all trips go as planned. In fact, some of them never even make it off the drawing room floor (so to speak).

In this episode we're sharing our thought process as we attempted to plan a family trip to Yellowstone, but (spoiler alert) realized halfway through we had to pivot and save Yellowstone for another time.

We get a lot of questions about how we plan our trips, and today, we're sharing our planning process for our upcoming family trip to Yellowstone.

First, we discuss the decision between driving and flying to Yellowstone. From Phoenix, driving takes about 15 hours, which can be broken up with an overnight stay in Zion National Park. Flying, on the other hand, offers the convenience of using points, but with no direct flights from Phoenix to Bozeman or Jackson, connections are necessary. We explore options like Southwest, United, and Delta, and share our experience applying for a United business card to cover the flight costs.

Next, we dive into lodging options within Yellowstone. Staying inside the park can save you the hassle of daily long drives, but accommodations like Mammoth Springs and the Old Faithful Inn fill up fast. We explain how to secure your reservations, including booking a year in advance and monitoring for cancellations.

Our Yellowstone travel itinerary also covers the challenges of using points for accommodations. We talk about balancing the use of points and cash, considering properties in West Yellowstone and Jackson. While finding points-eligible hotels like the Holiday Inn in West Yellowstone and various Hilton and Marriott options in Jackson, we also emphasize the importance of having the right credit cards to earn those valuable points.

As we finalize our plans, we realize the need for flexibility. With two major international trips already planned for next year, we decide to shift our Yellowstone trip to 2026. This allows us ample time to open new credit cards, meet minimum spends, and earn the points needed for a more cost-effective vacation. Plus, we'll have the Southwest Companion Pass again by then, making flights even more affordable.

In the meantime, we pivot to an alternative plan: a road trip to Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe. This trip provides a mix of stunning natural beauty and relaxation by the lake, breaking up the summer heat with a memorable adventure.

Throughout this episode, we highlight the importance of early planning, being flexible with travel dates, and using points strategically. Whether you're looking to escape to Yellowstone or considering other family-friendly destinations, our insights and detailed Yellowstone travel itinerary will help you plan a trip that's both fun and budget-friendly.

Tune in to learn how to navigate the challenges of planning a family trip to Yellowstone, from securing flights and accommodations to maximizing your points and miles. Don't miss our insider tips on making the most of your travel rewards and ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey for your family.

In this episode, we're diving into the details of our kid-free trip to the Grand Cayman Islands, focusing on our stay at the Kimpton Seafire Resort. We'll share how we booked the trip using points and miles, how much we saved, and our plans to bring our kids back here (that's how much we loved it!)

Every year we try to do at least one kid-free getaway, which we always plan around my birthday. This year, we chose the Grand Cayman Islands, and it was one of the best trips we've ever had.

The Grand Cayman Islands are stunning. It's a must-visit destination if you haven't been there yet. This time, our experience was even better because we stayed at the Kimpton Seafire Resort, which was maybe the nicest hotel we've ever stayed at. It is truly a 5 star / 5 diamond hotel.

Booking our stay at the Kimpton Seafire was made possible using points. About a year ago, I signed up for the IHG Premier Rewards card during an elevated offer period and earned 180,000 points. With the IHG card, you get the fourth night free when booking with points. So, our four-night stay required 210,000 points. We had 185,000 points already, so we bought the remaining points needed, taking advantage of an 80% bonus promotion. This cost us $161.

It's important to note that IHG resorts, like the Kimpton Seafire, charge a resort fee even on points bookings. At $80 a day, our total resort fee was $320, bringing our out-of-pocket expense to $480 for a stay that would have cost over $5,000 in cash.

The resort fee at the Kimpton Seafire covers a lot, including non-motorized beach activities like paddleboarding and kayaking. The amenities were fantastic, from the beautiful beach to the daily happy hour with free wine. We also enjoyed frozen treats like sugared grapes and popsicles while lounging on the beach.

Our room was an ocean view king, which was breathtaking. The view was amazing from the moment we walked in. Although we hoped for an upgrade, we were still very pleased with our room.

For meals, the resort has several restaurants, including two fine dining options, Ave and Avecita. We enjoyed our breakfasts and dinners at Ave, with its fantastic food. The pool bar and beachfront bar, Coccoloba, offered delicious casual dining.

One day, we took a boat trip to Starfish Point and then to a bioluminescence bay, where the water glows when agitated. It was an incredible experience, despite a few jellyfish stings.

The staff at the Kimpton Seafire were exceptional, making us feel like VIPs. They greeted us by name, acknowledged my birthday

We’ll walk you through the entire experience, from flights to food to activities, while sharing tips on how to maximize your points and miles to stay at luxury properties like the Grand Hyatt Kauai.

We started the trip by using our points and miles to book flights with Southwest, taking full advantage of our Companion Pass to fly our family of five for the price of three tickets. For our stay, we used Hyatt points to book the Grand Hyatt Kauai, a Category 7 property, saving us over $8,000 in cash costs. We’ll explain how we secured this luxury stay with just 30,000 points per night and offer tips on making the most of the club access at the hotel, which helped us save on meals during the trip.

Our review of the Grand Hyatt Kauai covers everything from the beautiful ocean views and spacious property to the pool areas, which include a lazy river, water slide, and even a lagoon. You’ll hear about how the property’s location near Poipu Beach provided access to wildlife like Hawaiian monk seals and sea turtles. Plus, we’ll share our experiences with on-property dining options, including our memorable meal at Tidepools, and what to expect from the club lounge.

We’ll also touch on a few mishaps, including a stomach bug that hit one of our kids, which led to some unexpected challenges. Despite this, the Grand Hyatt Kauai provided plenty of space and amenities to make our stay comfortable, even during a family emergency.

So if you’re looking for practical tips on how to use points and miles to book family vacations at luxury properties like the Grand Hyatt Kauai, or you just want to hear about what it’s really like to travel with kids, this episode is for you. Stay tuned for part two, where we’ll cover all the fun activities we did in Kauai, and share more about how points and miles made this dream vacation possible.

Whether you're a seasoned points and miles pro or just getting started, we hope this episode helps you learn new ways to travel more for less!

Poipu Beach - Sea Turtles

In this episode of the Travel Party of Five podcast, hosts Raya and Duane dive into the best family-friendly things to do in Kauai. Traveling with kids aged four to ten can be a challenge, but the island of Kauai offers plenty of activities that are both fun and accessible for families. Whether you're looking for scenic spots, unique local experiences, or simple ways to keep your kids entertained, Kauai has something for everyone.

Poipu Beach is a must-see spot, especially in the evening, when you can witness sea turtles coming ashore. As one of the best things to do in Kauai with kids, Poipu Beach provides the opportunity to see nature up close, with volunteers ensuring the turtles are protected. If you're visiting Kauai with your family, you won't want to miss this.

From there, they explore Waimea Canyon, often called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." This breathtaking spot offers panoramic views of the island and is another one of the incredible things to do in Kauai. It's a great destination for families, and the kids enjoyed the views despite the winding roads. The key is to go early, as clouds tend to roll in by mid-morning. The episode gives a breakdown of what to expect, how much it costs, and why it’s one of the top things to do in Kauai.

Raya and Duane also highlight Hanalei Bay, which they recommend as a perfect place for families to relax. With its calm waters, Hanalei Bay is one of the best places for young kids to swim and play.

For those seeking adventure, they discuss their boat tour of the Na Pali Coast, a six-hour trip with Captain Andy’s. This tour, while pricey, delivered unforgettable views of the coast and a chance to see dolphins swimming alongside the boat. The Na Pali Coast is one of Kauai's most iconic landmarks and can only be seen by air or sea. They break down what to expect on the tour, why it's worth the cost, and how to prepare your family for a day on the water. It's one of the more adventurous things to do in Kauai, and Duane lists it as one of his favorite experiences from the trip.

The episode also explores more relaxed family activities, like visiting Lydgate Park, a huge playground near Wailua, and eating at local favorite restaurants. They share their recommendations for kid-friendly meals and highlight Japanese Grandma’s Café as their top restaurant pick from the trip.

Whether you're visiting Kauai for the first time or returning with your family, this episode is packed with tips, insights, and firsthand experiences of family-friendly things to do in Kauai. From beaches and scenic spots to local eats and boat tours, you'll leave with a clear idea of how to make the most of your family trip to this stunning island.

21 Oct 2024Replay: How to Earn the Southwest Companion Pass00:34:06

In this episode, we’re revisiting one of the most valuable tools for frequent family travelers—the Southwest Companion Pass. If you've been wondering how to earn the Southwest Companion Pass, or you're looking to maximize your travel savings, this episode is for you.

We share our  personal experiences as a family of five, highlighting how earning the Southwest Companion Pass has made a huge impact on our travel plans. We explain how it allows us to fly with one companion for free (except for taxes and fees) on every Southwest flight. Since earning their Companion Passes in early 2023, they’ve traveled to destinations like Maui, Costa Rica, and Washington, D.C., only paying for a fraction of their family’s flights.

If you’re new to this game-changer, we break down exactly how to earn the Southwest Companion Pass, covering the most important steps like when to apply for Southwest credit cards and how to meet the minimum spending requirements. Timing is critical, and Raya and Duane explain how to maximize your travel benefits by planning strategically, especially if you're a larger family like theirs.

Here’s what we’ll cover in this episode:

  1. What is the Southwest Companion Pass?
  2. How to Earn the Southwest Companion Pass: We walk you through earning the 135,000 Rapid Rewards points needed within one calendar year. Raya also explains the alternative way to earn the Companion Pass by flying 100 Southwest flights, though she acknowledges that’s a harder route for most families.
  3. Maximizing the Companion Pass for Two Years: Learn why applying for the right Southwest credit cards at the right time can help you stretch the benefits for almost two full years.
  4. Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Get the Companion Pass: Raya and Duane explain how the Southwest Companion Pass makes sense for people who frequently travel to domestic and nearby international destinations. They also discuss how it may not be the best fit if you don’t live near a Southwest hub or prefer long-haul international travel.

One of the most crucial takeaways from this episode is understanding the best time to apply and spend on your Southwest credit cards. Raya stresses that if you want to earn the Companion Pass for the maximum amount of time, it’s important to ensure that your points hit your account after January 1st, so you can enjoy the pass for two full years.

Throughout the episode, they also share their personal strategies and a mistake Raya made when they first earned their passes—one she wants you to avoid. Whether you’re aiming for more frequent family vacations or planning weekend getaways, this episode is packed with tips on how to earn the Southwest Companion Pass, how to use it, and why it’s a game-changer for larger families.

If you're thinking about applying for Southwest credit cards, now is the time to start, so you can begin earning your Companion Pass for next year. As always, feel free to message us on Instagram at @TravelPartyof5 if you have any questions about how to earn the Southwest Companion Pass. We’re here to help you make your family travel more affordable!

All aboard for a journey through Arizona's hidden gem, the Verde Canyon! In this episode, join hosts Raya and Duane as they take you on a journey aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad. As part of their "Visit Arizona" series, they explore this historic train route that travels through the stunning Verde Canyon, often called Arizona's other Grand Canyon. Listen in as they share their experiences, tips, and insights about this unique four-hour train ride, which departs from Clarkdale and travels to Perkinsville and back.

Raya and Duane discuss everything you need to know before hopping on the Verde Canyon Railroad, from the best time of year to ride to what to expect during the journey. They describe the comfortable train cars, complete with air conditioning, champagne, and charcuterie boxes, making it a fun and relaxing ride for travelers. You’ll learn why choosing a seat on the right side of the train offers better views of Arizona’s landscapes, and how each car has access to an open-air observation deck where passengers can enjoy unobstructed views.

As you ride along the Verde River, the train’s guide shares stories about the region’s history, including details about ancient Sinagua cliff dwellings, local mining towns, and the railroad’s origins. Duane even hints at some of the lesser-known themed rides the Verde Canyon Railroad offers, such as Ales on Rails and special stargazing journeys, making it a versatile experience for visitors.

Raya and Duane explain their own journey from Phoenix to Clarkdale, sharing how the trip through Cottonwood added a charming touch to their adventure. While they were hoping to catch some fall foliage, they learned that Arizona’s unseasonably warm weather kept the fall colors at bay. Still, the ride offered beautiful views of red rock formations and lush greenery along the river, a striking contrast to the desert surroundings.

If you’re planning to visit Sedona or Flagstaff, Raya and Duane recommend making the Verde Canyon Railroad part of your trip. It’s an easy day trip from these locations and a great way to see more of Arizona’s varied landscapes. They suggest pairing your train ride with a stay at the Pinion Point, a Hyatt Vacation Club in Sedona, which can be booked using points. After a morning ride on the train, you can head back to Sedona for a nice dinner and complete a perfect day exploring Northern Arizona.

In addition to sharing their personal experiences, Raya and Duane offer practical advice for making the most of your Verde Canyon Railroad adventure. They emphasize the importance of bringing a deck of cards or other activities for the ride, as cell service is unavailable during much of the journey. Their laid-back, honest review helps you decide if this train ride is right for your family, especially if you’re looking for a mix of history, relaxation, and scenic beauty.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this episode of "Travel Party of Five" provides all the information you need to plan your trip on the Verde Canyon Railroad. Join hosts Raya and Duane from Travel Party of Five as they break down the details of booking a family trip to Japan for five, all using points and miles. From finding the best time of year to travel to selecting airlines and hotel accommodations, they share each step they took to make their upcoming Japan adventure affordable and memorable.

In this episode, Raya and Duane explain how they decided on traveling to Japan during fall break, avoiding Japan’s busy cherry blossom season and hot summers. Since their family can only travel during school breaks, they chose fall for its pleasant weather and more manageable crowds. They also touch on how they strategized the use of points for their entire family to secure affordable flights without sacrificing comfort. Listeners can learn from their research on airline award programs like American Airlines and Singapore Airlines, along with tips for avoiding high fees by selecting Japan Airlines for their main flights.

One of the challenges discussed in planning family travel to Japan was finding flights for five people on points. Raya shares how she worked through each airline’s award program and explains her top choices based on seat availability and costs. Family travel to Japan isn’t complete without talking about transportation and accommodations, so the hosts also cover how they’ll use points to stay at several Hyatt hotels and how they planned in advance to accumulate the points needed for their stay.

Travel Party of Five also talks about tips for positioning flights, which are often necessary when traveling internationally. They explain how to fly from their home city of Phoenix to San Francisco to catch their Japan-bound flight using Alaska Airlines points, sharing how they scored affordable seats for their whole family. They describe each airline’s booking quirks, sharing a few insider tips, like how American Airlines Japan Airlines award seats tend to show up a day later than expected on AA’s site, making it easier to snag deals if you check back at the right times.

In addition to flights, they outline their Japan accommodations booked on points, including the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, the Hyatt Centric Ginza, the Hyatt House Tokyo Shibuya, and the Hyatt Place Kyoto. Since they hold Hyatt Globalist status, they’re planning to enjoy some perks, including potential free breakfast and room upgrades, making family travel to Japan even more cost-effective.

As a family of five, Raya and Duane know the challenges that come with planning a big trip, especially when it’s as far as Japan. They’re excited to explore Tokyo, Kyoto, and local favorites like ramen shops, convenience stores, and perhaps even the base where Duane spent part of his childhood. They also look forward to sharing their experiences and more Japan travel tips after their trip, helping other families plan their own dream vacations.

Tune in to learn how to make a trip to Japan possible for your family with points and miles! You’ll walk away with practical tips on using points for flights and accommodations, as well as how to navigate travel logistics when you have a larger family. The Suite I stayed in (Founder's Suite)

In this episode of Travel Party of Five, hosts Raya and Duane dive into a review of the historic Chicago Athletic Association Hotel and share personal experiences and travel tips. Located in downtown Chicago, the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel is a beautifully restored property, originally built in 1893 as an exclusive athletic and social club. Now part of Hyatt's Unbound Collection, it offers unique features that make it a memorable choice for travelers.

Raya provides a detailed account of her stay, including her room upgrade to the spacious Founder’s Suite, which featured two fireplaces, a dining area, and views of Millennium Park. She also touches on the hotel’s blend of classic and modern amenities, from the Game Room, where guests can enjoy shuffleboard and pool, to the historic Milk Room, once a Prohibition-era speakeasy, now serving breakfast and coffee. The hotel’s Shake Shack in the lobby and the rooftop bar with city views add to its charm, making the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel a unique stay in the heart of the city.

The episode also includes practical advice for families managing work travel. Raya and Duane discuss the challenges of leaving family behind and share tips for keeping things running smoothly at home. They highlight the importance of meal planning, family support, and sticking to routines, which help make travel easier on both the traveling parent and the family at home.

While the Chicago Athletic Association offers plenty of character and charm, the hosts note that it may be best suited for adults rather than young families due to its historical decor and lack of child-friendly amenities like a pool. Overall, Raya and Duane agree that the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel is perfect for solo travelers, couples, or groups looking to explore the city with a touch of history.

Whether you’re interested in the architecture of the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel or seeking practical tips for balancing work travel and family, this episode offers insight and advice from experienced family travelers.

• Enjoyed the hotel's exceptional breakfast buffet featuring churros, chocolate, and Nutella on tap
• Visited Barcelona Aquarium and Time Out Market food hall during unexpected rainy weather
• Explored Mercado de la Boqueria for an impromptu family food tour sampling local specialties
• Took a family-friendly walking tour through the Gothic Quarter with churros and chocolate
• Marveled at Park Güell's whimsical "gingerbread houses" while kids chased pigeons
• Toured the breathtaking Sagrada Familia with its stunning colored stained glass windows
