Stop dreaming about travel and start booking those trips with The Travel Talk strategy. This strategy gives you the tools you need to be confident in booking trips when deals pop up so you can make the most out of your travel budget. Whether you’re looking to stay in 5 star hotels or fly economy, everyone can benefit from making the most out of the budget and we’ll show you how. PS: the better you get at maximizing your budget, the more travel you can count on in the year.

Key Concepts

#1 Meet Bruce and Shelly!
We are a 30 something travel couple that’s been traveling together for a decade. We have spent that decade figuring out our travel style and learning how to maximize our time off and budget to create a travel rich lifestyle.

#2 The Travel Talk Strategy
This is our #1 travel strategy. Set yourself up for more travel this year by being proactive in your budget and time off. And of course, the best piece of advice we have for finding those incredible, “I have to book this” deals is being flexible in your destination.

#3 What’s next?
We’re so excited to have you join us on this journey. We have some pretty awesome content coming up including: Great episodes coming up like how we do multiple $3k international trips a year; How we travel to high costs places like Disney and Universal; How we go about adding to our travel budget every year through personal finances as well as travel hacking.

24 Jan 2023The Key to Free Travel- Travel Hacking 10100:37:42

Have you ever wondered how people travel so often? Or maybe you’re listening to this now because you’ve always wanted to travel more but couldn't figure out how to make it happen? Stay tuned to hear about one of our favorite strategies to make the most of our yearly travel budget: Travel Hacking.

#1 Beginners Travel Hacking

  • Travel hacking is using credit card points to pay for travel expenses. With maybe our favorite (and definitely most used) card, The Capital One Venture card, you accumulate points with your regular spend (the amount you put on a card each month) and then “erase” any travel purchases you make.
  • We’ve used this for free flights to Europe, twice and also many domestic flights since signing up for the card in 2017.

#2 Intermediate Travel Hacking

  • If you feel like you are on board with the Capital One Venture card and want to take your hacking to the next level, we recommend the Capital One Venture X card. The difference here is that this card costs $395/year. That high annual fee gets you the same eraser power you had before, but also comes with a $300 travel credit (when booked through the travel portal!), and 10,000 anniversary points- which that alone is $400 a year (as long as you actually use them!). It comes with priority pass for airport lounges, access to signature select airport lounges, and capital one lounges. It also gives you Global Entry/TSA precheck and some other fun perks like basic travel insurance, rotating memberships through the year, etc.

#3 Expert Travel Hacking

  • In our world, expert travel hacking comes in the form of transferring your points to partners instead of using them in a portal or erasing points. What that means is you have, let’s say, 10,000 credit card points. Now instead of using those as an eraser, you transfer them to Delta and use them like Delta Skymiles. In this case, you often get much better redemption rates (cent per point!).

07 Feb 2023Don't Be Scared of Layovers- How to Maximize Your Vacation00:30:50

What if you could add another country to your itinerary with zero costs, and potentially lower your costs? What if you could do the most iconic trip in that country in just one day? On today’s episode we tackle a dirty word in travel - the dreaded LAYOVER - if this word strikes fear into your heart, stick around to find out how a layover can become the highlight of your trip.

#1 How to Use Layovers and When To Choose Them

Layovers can be a pain, but use them correctly and they can be a trip highlight. We would choose a layover with the following criteria:

  • It’s not just an overnight layover
  • There are no additional visa/documentation requirements (Check out our layover fails to see why we included this!)
  • It is either very long or the airport is set up to allow for some exploration (ie: Qatar and Iceland)
  • We have the time (our trip is more than a week long)

We had an amazing experience in our Iceland Layover where we got to travel the Golden Circle and even hang out in a “secret” lagoon. We skipped the more touristy hot springs in Iceland but on a return trip, we’d definitely be interested in checking them out.

#2 Success Stories and Fails

  • Iceland is our #1 success story. It was actually my favorite country we visited on our 2017 trip (other countries on that trip were Germany, Czech Republic, Austria and Budapest). We (self) toured the golden circle and spent about 15 hours driving around 300km on the first stop. Then on the return trip we got about 8 hours to check out Reykjavik, which included a cute farmer’s market, some amazing fish and chips and some really fun street art. A great way to spend a travel day!
  • Our fail is definitely Qatar. We had an 8 hour layover and a booked excursion from the airport to check out some city highlights (a very popular thing to do from this airport). Unfortunately Bruce got COVID and while he was cleared for travel for Uganda, he would not have passed the PCR test that was required to enter Qatar. Unfortunately, that meant we had to cancel the tour and instead had to spend 8 hours lounging in an airport. Not ideal- especially after a 30 hour travel period.

21 Feb 2023Bucket List Trip: Christmas in Paris for $300000:38:35

Stuck on the budget for that dream trip to Europe? Would you believe us if we said you could have a week in Paris for just $3000, without staying in hostels, skipping experiences or saying no to your 3rd pastry of the day? Stick around to hear our full itinerary breakdown of our Christmas in Paris for two and we’ll share a treasure trove of tips on how to create a trip of your own that you can book THIS YEAR.

#1  Breaking Down Costs of International Travel : Transportation and Accommodation

  • Your number one expense is probably going to be transportation and accommodations. These are also things you cannot adjust on the fly so you have to be specific about the budget for this. This is where our favorite (Scott’s Cheap Flights) is the only way we’re able to do these trips. Our total costs for transportation was: $995 and accommodations: $755. That brings the total so far to: $1750

#2 Breaking Down Costs of International Travel: Entertainment

  • Plenty of things to do cheaply (or even free!). There are usually a plethora of free walking tours that can give you the lay of the land. There are often hidden gems to be found when walking around cities and keeping your eyes out. In fact, we found a Christmas concert in Saint Chapel for $50/per person that we jumped on! We also headed for Disneyland Paris, which was a really amazing experience and a great way to add some variety in our trip. It was also cool to compare the different parks (we’ve been to 3 park systems, Walt Disney World Resorts, Disneyland Resorts and now Disneyland Paris!). Entertainment costs bring our total to: $2150 but we were able to cover those expenses through some simple travel hacking. **Quick note here- you can almost never use travel points on Disney tickets because they don’t code as travel! We simply covered part of our accommodations that we had already planned in the budget to cover the cost of the Disney tickets!

#3 Breaking Down Costs of International Travel: Food

  • Because we “travel hacked” our way out of the cost of Disney tickets, we had $1250 (or over $200/day) for food, and that’s a good thing too because we were in Paris afterall. We went to over a dozen patisseries, multiple Christmas markets, cafes, gastropubs, etc. We definitely did not feel deprived of food this trip! In fact, we had to come home and eat some veggies because we were so full of bread! So after eating our way through Prais, Strasbourg and Disneyland Paris, we met our total budget of $3000.

07 Mar 2023The Great American Roadtrip- How to Plan and What to Expect00:49:52

The Great American Roadtrip- How to Plan and What to Expect

Want to travel more but hate to fly?  Do the cost of those plane tickets always stop you saying yes to your next trip? Today we dive into one of our favorite ways to travel, where the journey is just as fun as the destination - the classic road trip.

#1 Why Road Trips?

This was our #1 way of traveling when we were low on funds. We started with weekend trips and graduated to longer, more intense trips. We were able to explore a lot of New England with very little money. Now we use roadtrips not so much as a budget trip, but more of a way to enjoy the journey of a trip, just as much as the destination.

#2 How We Planned our Great American Roadtrip

We had 5 weeks to do the roadtrip. I know that sounds like a lot of time off, but it goes fast when planning to drive all the way across the country. We were able to visit 12 states, just as many campsites and see some of the best sites in the US.

Concept #3 Our #1 Roadtrip Tips and What's Next for Us

We mentioned some of these but here’s a roundup of our best tips:

  1. Figure out how far you’re willing to drive, go on google maps and start looking at how far those hours will get you.
  2. Leave time to stop on the way in case you find something cool
  3. Figure out your travel style- do you want to go straight flexible or do something closer to our trip (a hotel booked for every night).
  4. Figure out a home base and hop around from there. It’ll save you some sanity about having to pack and repack all the time, which is most of the roadtrip.
  5. Know your travel limits. This takes a toll. Make sure to add in purposeful breaks!
  6. Pack in a “capsule” style- meaning a few staple pieces that can be used in many ways. That will cut down on how much you need to pack and unpack each night. If you’re camping- make sure to have a good cooler, a cast iron pan and (our favorite) a jet boil for your morning coffee!

What’s next- We hope to rent a Campervan internationally. To me, the Campervan adds a layer of ease to traditional roadtripping that I think will take the adventures to the next level. I’ll add a blog down at the bottom for my favorite Campervan couple and they even do it with a baby! When I do my Scotland Campervan trip, I’m definitely using their guide. And no, we’re definitely not sponsored, they don’t even know we exist! Here’s their article: https:/

21 Mar 2023What Should a Trip to Disney World Cost?00:33:50

You’ve heard it before, the classic question following victories, major achievements and the super bowl - what will you do next? We’re going to Disney World! But how do you get there? What does it typically cost? Is it really a once-in-a-lifetime trip that is growing out of reach for many families? Today we tackle our budget breakdown of a typical family trip to Disney, with our exclusive tips and tricks on how to make your vacation work for your budget.

Chapters

#1 Disney World Lingo

There are three categories of accommodations at Disney World and those are: Value, Moderate and Deluxe. As you can imagine, the perks you get with each level increase as the price increases. There are a few sweet spots in each category but they generally have a price range they stick to. By knowing each category, you’ll know exactly what to expect and whether or not you want to splurge to get a nicer resort.

There are also three categories of dining at Disney and those are: Quick Service, Table Service and Signature Dining. In our base level budget that we mention in just a second- we only calculate Quick Service food- which is a cafeteria style experience. If you are looking for sit down meals, you’ll need to up your budget as well.

#2 Our Base Budget

Our base budget takes into account a family of four, 2 adults and 2 children (under 9 in Disney’s eyes). We have them at a value resort, 4 days at the park (one park per day) and eating 2 quick service meals a day (eating their own food for breakfast and sandwiches for the pool) and about $1000 in transportation- of course this will depend on how you plan to get there. Our budget is $5,000 with all this included. Starting with the base budget, you can see if you want to cut down on that- for example staying off property. Or if you feel like you can add to that- which of course the opportunities for that are endless at Disney World.

#3 Our opinion on popular additions

The #1 splurge in our opinion is a fireworks dessert party. #2 is a droid or lightsaber building reservation (if you’re really into Star Wars!). We don’t feel like Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is worth it, but there are many furloughed cast members on the facebook page: Ear for Each Other, that do an amazing job!

04 Apr 2023What is Local Travel and Why Should You Already Be Doing It00:28:57

What is Local Travel and Why Should You Already Be Doing It
Want to travel more but feel overwhelmed by flying, finding a week off, or leaving the country? Or maybe you already travel some but you're feeling stuck in your routines? Are you at a place in life where it’s hard to commit far in advance? We have the solution - and today we go over exactly where to start if you’re feeling overwhelmed or stuck in a rut.

Sign up for giveaway here- http://travelmorepodcast.com/landing-page

Chapters

#1 There are many ways to define local travel, just like there are many ways to define travel in itself. But here’s how we define it: Local travel is all about getting out of your typical routine and discovering new things. What does that look like? It could look like going on a 3 day weekend to a nearby town. It could look like going to the next town over to go to a festival or fair. It could even mean going to a new brewery in your area. We would consider any of that local travel.

#2  The more you say yes- the easier it gets. The more you get out of your comfort zone and experience new things, the more you look for those experiences and when that flight finally shows up and all the stars align- you are much more likely to pull the trigger and say yes because you are already used to choosing new things and putting yourself out there. It’s kinda like Dave Ramsay’s Debt Snowball, if you’re familiar with that financial idea.

#3 We live in New England now but we also lived in the panhandle of FL and I lived in Memphis- right in the middle of the country. In each of these places we found cool places to go on local trips. Let’s start with New England

In New England- some of our favorite places to “travel local” are to the local fairs- pretty much our entire fall is spent this way. We also love Cape Cod for longer trips and of course, skiing

In Memphis- I liked Nashville of course, I actually went there and back in a day a few times. I also visited Saint Louis on a long weekend trip as well as Chattanooga, Hot Springs, the Ozarks and finally Tuscaloosa for a game!

And in Florida- we of course did Disney (on a resident’s pass), but we also did St. Augustine, and our very favorite weekend location- New Orleans.

We’d love to hear all about some of the local travel adventures you get up to! Shoot us an email at contact@travelmorepodcast.com to tell us all a

AirBnB Vs. Hotels - How to Choose the Perfect Stay and Avoid a Nightmare

Travel More Podcast

A question that plagues the modern traveler- do I book an AirBnB or a Hotel? Both have their unique pros and cons. Today we share some of our dream AirBnB stays like our tropical paradise in the Everglades and Florida keys, but also our nightmare experiences, like midnight cockroaches in North Carolina. Keep listening to hear our stories and advice on how to find the perfect accommodation for your next adventure.

#1 Explaining the different services

  • The differences between AirBnBs and Hotels and (and why you would choose one over another) can be put into many a few different categories. We define these categories as: Price - Style - Credit Cards and Loyalty - Dependability - Group Size

#2 Our Experiences in AirBnBs

Good

- Everglades Airstreams

- Boat in the Florida Keys

-Quirky finds in New Orleans

Bad

- Orlando Apartment

-Cleaning Requirements in Vermont

- Cockroaches in North Carolina

#3 Our Recommendations

It depends! Look at both!

  • How to read AirBnB reviews to determine it’s worth - also watch for hidden fees
  • I trust google reviews the most
  • AirBnB
    • Pros
      • Can be cheaper - or way more expensive, unless splitting with group
        • Check the hidden fees!
      • Could have local community location - feel like you’re staying how locals live
      • Unique features compared to hotels
    • Cons
      • Can be sketchy based on owner - more risky than hotels
      • Hidden fees
      • They are actually illegal in some places and some people have been kicked out of them because of this- make sure you know the laws of the area
  • Hotel
    • Great if you are building points/loyalty or redeeming
    • Consistency - a presence there for later check-ins - feeling of security
    • Can still be fun and quirky- just have to read reviews and make sure they are truly quirky and not just dingy
    • Transparent fees
    • My favorite brands are Marriott and Hyatts- IBIS for cheap stays in Europe and Holiday Inn for Cheap Stays in US if not Marriott/Hyatts

We want to thank Going for sponsoring the giveaway! Keep your eyes peeled for more coming soon!

02 May 2023How to Create a Travel Budget for Your Trip00:29:37

How to Create a Travel Budget for Your Trip

Are you someone who feels stuck before you even get started planning a trip? Does the word budget make you feel dread and panic? Have you been putting off that bucket list trip because it always seems out of reach? Today we break down the essentials of planning a budget using two strategies that Shelly and I have used to make our bucket list trips a reality. And stick around to hear about our new found travel love and a hack to skip the nitty gritty of budget planning.

Today we are talking about all things travel budget. We have a few different strategies when it comes to planning a budget.

We will learn about:

  1. Many different travel tools to help plan your budget
  2. A few different types of budgets and when they are appropriate
  3. A revival of a type of travel that allows you to limit your required planning and be able to experience your bucket list destinations.

There are two ways to build a budget: destination specific and date specific.

Destination Specific Budgets:

Destination specific takes more planning but you can more easily check off specific bucket lists. For example, if you want to see the Northern Lights in Norway, you will probably be hard pressed to make that a super budget trip. It's a popular season and an expensive destination. So instead, we will give you the tools to build a specific budget for that destination.

Date Specific Budget:

Date specific (which is all we talk about in our Travel Talk episode) gives you much more flexibility and is less time consuming, but it does require a bit of trust that you’ll enjoy the destination that is “chosen” for you. I’ll explain that a little more as we go.

We also have a fun little bonus that allows you to minimize your planning efforts while also going to specific bucket list destinations.

16 May 2023Why We Would Skip Yellowstone and Where We Would Go Instead00:25:55

Why We Would Skip Yellowstone and Where We Would Go Instead

Are you ready to get outside this summer but aren't sure where to go? Is Yellowstone national park on your bucket list? Today we share why we may skip one of America’s most famous parks and what we might do instead, plus we give you our insider tips for visiting America’s national parks.

First all about Yellowstone

Okay, maybe we wouldn’t actually skip it, but we wouldn’t base ourselves there for a major trip.

The great part about Yellowstone? Wildlife and geothermal pools

The Cons?

  • it’s giant– we spent over 7 hours driving in one day in Yellowstone.
  • it’s mostly about sightseeing from your car, some overlooks, and boardwalks more than anything.
  • it’s extremely popular, which means busy. We got stuck in more than a few traffic jams due to wildlife sightings—we often coin phrases (kinda like an inside joke) that we say over and over again in our trips and ours here was: just another buffalo!
  • the campgrounds were also extremely busy, with little to no privacy and with alot of people who don’t necessarily know camp etiquette. We’re no professional campers but things like, quiet hours, are definitely a thing to know and follow in a campground!

So where would we go instead? Easy- the Grand Tetons

  • It's less than an hour to Yellowstone from the Tetons, and this is definitely where I would base myself for the trip
  • You won’t be driving as much- it's not nearly as big
  • This is a lot more active of a park, there’s some amazing hiking trails, kayaking, fishing, rafting, etc. This is more of the outdoorsy experience I was expecting from the National Parks
  • We had one of our favorite hikes ever here- Jenny Lake

Finally we have our top secret tips for visiting a park- you’ll have to tune in to hear all about those!

Remember- we’re doing a giveaway to celebrate our summer podcast series- we are so excited! All people on our email list will be eligible for the giveaway so join now if you want to be entered to win- link below in the show notes!

30 May 2023Why Cruising Should Be On Every Traveler’s Bucket List00:35:38

Why Cruising Should Be On Every Traveler’s Bucket List

Travel More Podcast

Some people swear it's the only way to travel - others turn their nose at the thought - is cruising really so controversial? There’s more to cruising than what you’ve seen in brochures or heard from sitting through your relatives slideshow from their 12th Caribbean adventure. Keep listening to hear our take on both classic and lesser known ways to set sail and find out why cruising should be on every traveler's bucket list.

#1 Caribbean Cruises

Caribbean cruises are great for people who just want to relax and see some great beaches in the meantime. These aren’t going to take you to the most authentic and cultural places, but they’ll be a fun, all-inclusive experience. These are fantastic for big groups of people, like family vacations, because everyone can go and do their own thing. These can also be an affordable way to vacation. We’ve seen them from as little as $700pp to, well as much as you want to pay. Making sure you pick the correct cruise line is the number one consideration with Caribbean Cruises.

#2 European Cruises

This is where things get interesting. European cruises obviously drop you off in European cities which are generally easy to get around. This allows you to get out of the tourist traps right on the docks that you will probably be stuck in on caribbean cruises without an excursion.

There are also smaller cruise lines like Variety Cruises that are only 49 people tops. Because of the small size of the boat, they are able to port in smaller destinations. This allows you to explore places that would be very difficult to get to on your own. This cruise line goes all over the world but has lots of amazing European destinations- like Greece.

#3 Adventure/Expedition Cruises

Adventure cruising is cruising that is specifically focused around exploring. You won’t necessarily find mini-golf on the top deck or a 24 buffet in the galley but you will find naturalists on board, sometimes labs are on board, specialists and destinations that you can’t get anywhere else.

These websites we’re going to share are our utility belt of travel planning tools. None of these websites require sign ups or email addresses and they are all free to use (in the way we do!). https://www.rome2rio.com/ -the best way to plan a multi-city trip

https://www.booking.com/ -create a budget using average hotel prices and book them on this site if needed

https://www.tripadvisor.com/ -use tripadvisor for cheap eats! Our absolute favorite feature

https://www.viator.com/ -search tours and see what the most popular things to do in the area are- don’t necessarily book through this site.

Are Airport Lounges Really Worth It? What to Expect and How to Get in

Date: 6/27/23

Travel More Podcast

Traveling through an airport can be stressful and expensive. Movies and TV shows always show airport lounges for business and first class travelers- but we’re here to tell you, it doesn’t have to be that way. Today we’re unveiling the mythical airport lounge experience and letting you know if it’s really worth it and maybe more importantly- how to get in!

Airport Lounges are not all created equally, we’ve been to some great ones, and some not so great ones. But even the not so great ones beat sitting at the gate for 2 hours before your flight. There are 4 main ways to get in:

  1. Buy a Day Pass
  2. Fly First Class or Business
  3. Have Status with an Airline
  4. Have a Great Credit Card

So of course, like most episodes this summer- we suggest getting your feet wet in the travel hacking world. They can get you some great fringe benefits. And while we wouldn’t get the cards JUST for lounge access, it’s nice to have on the side!

Here’s our favorite lounge access card: Capital One Venture X

04 Jul 2023Delayed Flight Compensation: Know What to Ask For Next Time You Fly00:21:26

Delayed Flight Compensation: Know What to Ask For Next Time You Fly

Date: 7/4/23

Travel More Podcast

Almost 8,000 US flights delayed or canceled due to severe storms! These were the headlines leading into the fourth of July weekend. And while that’s not what you want to see before heading to the airport, knowing your passenger rights, airline compensation policies and having access to some travel protections can make a huge difference in your summer travel plans. Today we’ll show you how to protect your summer vacation and why you might already have all you need!

#1 Air Regulations

Travel to/from EU:

  • Government regulated compensation packages
  • Have to be traveling around the EU, out of the EU or to the EU (with an EU airline) to be eligible.
  • Can be up to $700 compensation, food and lodging

Travel to/from US

  • No major government regulated compensation packages- only with luggage
  • Most major airlines have compensation packages

#2 Credit Cards and Travel Insurance

  • Most major travel credit cards have some sort of travel insurance built in
  • Most delayed trip expenses- up to $500 for 6-12 hours delayed
  • Chase has the best coverage, and while it is even better with the expensive Chase Reserve, even the $95 Chase Sapphire is pretty great giving the most comprehensive trip cancellation insurance (very similar to regular travel insurance).

#3 Up and Coming

  • There is some hope for US regulations- there is a bill proposed that will make compensation packages more similar to the EU regulations, which would protect travelers a bit more. We’ll see if that passes- that could change some things!

Check to see if your flight is owed compensation at AirHelp

11 Jul 2023Best Travel Credit Cards: Main Players00:15:37

Best Travel Credit Cards- Main Players

Date: 07-11-2023

Travel More Podcast

Want to get started with travel hacking but don’t know where to begin? Overwhelmed by the amount of credit cards on the market and don’t know what to choose? Today we continue our summer school series on travel hacking, breaking down the best travel credit cards to start building your wallet.

We’ve already talked about our Easy, Medium and Hard travel hacking in our Second ever episode so this is going to be more about the full wallet, not just one card!

When we say main player cards, we mean where you are spending money and turning things you buy into flexible currency. So your main cards need to be flexible currency (e.g., points that are transferable to airlines and hotel programs)

When you start - you will probably have one main card off this list, from one of the ecosystems

As you progress - you’ll want to add cards that give you more points in certain categories:

What we cover in this episode

-The four different “ecosystems” of travel credit cards and what might be best for you.

-Combinations of flexible currency cards that make sense to increase your point earning rate

-Our rules on opening credit cards and what to watch out for

-Some of our favorite redemptions to date

Here's the article explaining each piece of this episode- First Travel Credit Card

If all this makes your head hurt, you can check out our own credit card wallet and how we use different cards to rack up the points and miles.

01 Aug 2023Best Travel Credit Cards: Co-Branded Cards00:14:13

Best Travel Credit Cards- Main Players

Date: 08-1-2023

Travel More Podcast

Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, Southwest, United, Delta  There’s so many different brands and so many credit cards to get- how do you choose? In this edition of our Travel Hacking series, we’re going to focus on the Supporting players of your wallet. These shouldn’t be your first choice to open or for every day spending- those were covered in our last travel hacking episode. But they’ll take your travel hacking game to the next level with top tier benefits and savings.

There are a few questions you want to ask yourself before you open a co-branded credit card. The biggest one is what is the value this credit card brings- and we mean real value! Not just the “coolness” factor of lounge access and upgrades. We only consider something a value if you would have paid for it anyways. For example, Marriott gives you a free night certificate. If you know you’re going to stay in one hotel a year and pay more than $100 for that night- then the Marriott card will give you at least $5 in value (after its $95/year annual fee). We suggest you use this value strategy when choosing a card!

What else we cover in today’s episode

-The main hotel cards and why we’d choose each one

-What are some perks to look for when choosing a co-branded credit card

-Our favorite co-branded perk

-How to choose and airline credit card

Here is the full episode transcript with all the info we talked about!

If all this makes your head hurt, you can check out our own credit card wallet and how we use different cards to rack up the points and miles.

We are always looking for cheap and free things to do around the world. • How to find free activities
  • What to do if there aren’t any free activities around you (how to make your own)!

15 Aug 2023How to Earn Credit Card Points for Free Travel00:19:02

How to Earn Credit Card Points for Free Travel

So you have your wallet set up, you’ve got your main and supporting player cards, and you’ve mastered the basic travel hack lingo - now what? Today we break down four main ways to maximize your point earning potential and get one step closer to free travel.

If you aren’t sure where to start with travel credit cards- check this out first

I’m not going to lie to you- a lot of travel hackers get the crazy redemptions and amass huge point stacks by what’s called, card churning. That is- getting a bonus from a card, holding it for a year, closing it and reopening it 48 months later (or however long you have to wait to get the bonus again). BUT there are ways you get many points, without churning or with churning only a card or two instead of your full wallet.

What else we cover in today’s episode

-How to earn the most credit card points on everyday spend

-Free apps that help you track your credit card multipliers

-How I accidentally earned points by going out to eat

-What to be careful about when earning credit card points

Make sure to go back and listen to all the episodes on travel hacking during our summer school season!

26 Sep 2023Why Every Traveler Should Consider Camping for Accommodations00:33:29

Camping - loved by some for the fresh air, the night sky and closeness to nature. Hated by those who would rather not sleep among the bugs, be away from their beds and have to forgo a hot shower. But there’s more to this accommodation option than what the stereotypes tell us - camping can be affordable, luxurious, unique and a solution for your future group trip. Camping is not one size fits all! Today we share why every traveler should consider camping for their next trip.

In this episode we break down three types of camping to consider for your next trip:

Trailer and RV

  • Cheaper than hotels and other accomodations
  • Keep your things with you and sleep in your own bed
  • Can rent!

Glamping

  • Bring your luxury bedroom to the outdoors
  • No need to set up camp or have a lot of gear - typically comes with rental
  • More expensive but a nice way to explore outdoor accommodations for those who feel camping is not for them

Rustic Camping (Car Camping)

  • Cheapest way to stay
  • Access nature where RVs can't and hotels require driving
  • Top camping items
    • Quality tent - we like a good sized one for car camping so we can stand up
    • Jetboil or a camp stove
    • Portable sink or wash basin
    • Nature friendly soap (we like Bonner's)
    • Water jug or container (5 gal.)
    • Camp cups and silverware
    • Headlamp, flashlight, lamps
    • Quality cooler - nice it if drains to refresh ice
    • Air mattress or roll out
    • Hatchet
    • Pocket knife
    • First aid kit
    • Back up chargers/batteries
    • Lighter or matches
    • Sandals or easy slip ons
    • Tarp to put under tent or for extra rain protection
    • Toilet paper
    • Hanging shower (if none on site)
    • Camp chairs and foldable table
    • Organizing bins/containers for easy pack in pack out

10 Oct 2023Blues, BBQ and Soulful History Memphis, TN: Underrated Destination00:40:19

Planning your next trip and not sure where to go? Hearing horror stories about overcrowded tourist destinations, high prices and low availability? We’ve got a better idea! Today we’re starting our exploration of underrated destinations to consider for your next trip.  A foodie paradise meets soulful history in today’s episode of underrated destinations.

Some of the reasons we love Memphis:

  • The Food- you know it as a BBQ capital but there's more to the Memphis food scene than meets the eye.
  • The History- Memphis has a complicated past but this city continues to grow and learn. Stand in the studio used by Elvis and the million dollar quartet or take a moment of reverence at the National Civil Rights Museum.
  • The Music- Memphis is constantly buzzing with live music. The most popular music you'll find here is the blues and you can find it around every corner in the downtown district around Beale Street.

What do you think? Would you do a trip to Memphis?

05 Dec 2023How We Celebrated Christmas in Portugal and Spain for Under $200000:43:20

Don't be fooled into thinking all the travel deals happen in the shoulder seasons. While there are cheaper times to travel, you can still find some gems if you have to travel during the busy seasons. Here's a breakdown of how we spent Christmas in Porto, Portugal and Vigo, Spain for under $2000.

We used Going and got an alert for our flights
Our Marriott Account and Capital One Venture X paid for our hotels (all but $50)
Our bus/train ticket from Porto to Vigo and back again was $40 a piece.
Pair those savings with the fact that Porto and Vigo are not expensive destinations in general and you have a week filled with Michelin restaurants, port wine tours and Christmas markets that won't break the bank.

You don't want to miss today's episode full of some amazing wins and some ridiculous fails.

12 Mar 2024Perfect Weekend Getaway Destinations: Las Vegas00:29:01

This is part of our new series where we highlight “easy” weekend trips.  We’re part of the 9-5ers that are just looking to use our PTO in the best way possible. Weekend trips are a great way to start to get out there with minimal planning (because it's just a short trip). It's a great way to “get your feet wet” so to speak and work your way up to those bucket list getaways. Weekend getaways obviously vary on how easy or realistic they are based on where you’re based but generally, this is why we say that a trip to Vegas is a great long weekend trip:

  • Many flights in and out- a good chance of finding a decently priced flight
  • Many hotels including ones that can be used with major credit card point carriers
  • It's a place you typically want a taste of, not necessarily a place where you need to spend a week to 10 days to experience the soul of the place.

In today's episode we talk about:

  • Best things to do in Las Vegas
  • The mistakes we made on our trip to Vegas
  • What we would focus on for our next trip!

Would you go to Vegas for the weekend?

26 Mar 2024Why We Chose Uganda for Our African Safari - Part 100:30:10

An African safari is a bucket list destination for many people and we could talk for hours, days, maybe even weeks about our trip to Uganda. Today we're just sticking to how we picked the country, what we experienced while we were there and what we would do differently. We're going to leave a future episode to discuss what to expect on African safaris in general.

What we cover in today's podcast:

  • Why Uganda- what led us to choosing this rather unconventional country for our first trip to Africa
  • Some of our crazy experiences like white river rafting on the Nile River, Roasting coffee beans and making matoke with a local and, of course, Gorilla Trekking
  • Why a tour company can really make or break your African safari experience
