Resources, Tips & Tricks:

  • Slow travel VS Fast Travel - Figure out what type of traveller you are.
  • Figure out what you like and don't like based on your interests.
  • Try and avoid FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) Accept that you may not be able to see everything and may need to return. This can lead to burnout.
  • Plan as much as you can but be prepared for things to not go as planned
  • Re: COVID-19. Consider the destinations data (Confirmed Cases). Also, consider the destinations' ability to handle an increased number of confirmed COVID numbers. You don't want to be a burden on the destination's health care system.
  • Re: COVID-19. Now is a good time to explore your own backyard
  • Arrive at the airport early to unnecessary stress (long lines at check-ins, at security, getting to your gate etc)
  • Before booking your flight research the Airline COVID-19 policies and procedures. Also, inquire about the Airline's return policy and/or book with a credit card or credit card with specific flight insurance.
  • Deep Breathing & Self Talk can be helpful during turbulence - more of this in the next episode with Dr. Stacie Appel Boyar, Counselor, MSEd, LMHC as well as meditation.
  • Embrace the destination. Don't compare it to where you came from.

Resources. Tips & Tricks:

Trip Planning:

  • 99% of what we worry about never happens
  • Anxiety comes from thinking of the unknown
  • Be mindful and be in the moment
  • If you plan too much you may not enjoy any of it
  • If you have a fear of missing out (FOMO) Question where that comes from - is it because of social media?
  • Practice god Social Media Hygiene
  • Cut back on social media
  • Make a list when packing to prevent over packing

COVID-19

  • Make a list of all the things you need to bring with regards to COVID-19 and leave in your carry-on (Extra Masks, Spay Hand Sanitizer, Gel Hand sanitizer, alcohol wipes etc.) Remember to check the amounts allowed on the plane (ie 50ml)

Airports & Flying:
Airports:

  • You can’t control or change other people and their behaviour but you can control yourself.
  • Most people get anxious when they need to rush. So give yourself a lot of time. Especially at airports as anything can happen.
  • In crowded airports or stressful situations like on the plane, use Deep Breathing techniques.
Be careful not to use short shallow breaths as that will make you feel worse.
  • Take long deep breaths - breath in from your nose slowly, pushing it out to your stomach, holding it then releasing it through pierced lips.
  • Practise deep breathing all the time. Before a trip, before sleep when you wake up in the morning etc
  • Grounding - Using your 5 senses to bring you back in the present. In your immediate Souroundings find 5 Things You Can See, 4 Things You Can Smell, 3 Things You Can Hear, 2 Things You Can Touch 1 Thing You Can Taste
  • Muscle Relaxation can help with sleeping. Tighten and release the muscles in your body starting from your feet.
  • Comfort Objects - Something you can hold in your hand that you can keep in your pocket. Instead of focusing on the stressful situation, you direct your attention to the comfort object. Feel its shape, its temperature, its texture.

Flying:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen then apply logic to debunk those thoughts (ie: plane crashing VS how ofter to planes actually crash.
  • Save treats, movies or books that you’ve been putting off specifically for the flight. Do something you love while going through things you hate.
  • Safe Space - Takes practice but visualize a place you’ve been to or seen and try to imagine yourself there. Use your senses to really try to bring yourself to that place.
  • Turbulence doesn’t usually make a plane crash
  • For every negative think of three positives
  • Exposure Therapy
  • Pay attention to the flight attendants. If they are calm then it might help to keep you calm

Destination:

  • Try to look at all the negative experiences as part of the overall travel experience - They become the stories you tell the most
  • Plan as much as you you can but be prepared for things to not go as planned
  • Get travel insurance and medical insurance it will help ease the mind.

  • You’re about to pay for that lovely souvenir when you realize your wallet and your passport are missing
  • That short cut you took has brought you down a sketchy alleyway and you are not alone
  • While on that guided ATV tour you crash, break your arm and need to be hospitalized

We all love a good horror story.
But anyone with a passport can tell you what real scary story and that is where the Travel Horror Stories Podcasts begins.

THE DARK SIDE OF TRAVEL

When I talked to a bunch of travel bloggers about the idea behind the podcast at one of the biggest travel blogging conferences called TBEX, they immediately started sharing their Trave Horror Stories. Some were scary, some were shocking and some were even funny but at the end of the day we as Travel Content Creators, understand the dark side of travel.

However, when I talk to everyday people that dark side actually stops people from travelling.

THE BRIGHT SIDE OF TRAVEL

I’ve seen breathtaking views. I’ve eaten amazing food. I’ve met so many amazing people that have fundamentally altered many aspects of the way that I live my life. Seeing the world is life-changing. But let’s be honest, not everything about travel is a perfect Instagram picture.

So how do I be honest about travel without creating a fear of travel?
I can do it with education – people always fear what they don’t understand.

THE SOLUTION

I’ve pulled together thousands of travel bloggers, travel bloggers, travel writers and travel influencers as well as professionals in the travel and tourism space. Together they share travel horror stories then discuss what they did right, what they did wrong and what they could have done differently.

We always say hindsight is 20/20, right?

The Travel Horror Stories podcast is a show that listens to real stories from travel bloggers and travellers just like you then unpack those stories to discuss safety tricks prevention treats horror hacks and follow-up tactics.

The goal is to turn travel nightmares into dreams of beaches sunshine and margaritas.

If that sounds like something you’d be interested in, join the mailing list so you don’t miss a single story.
Also, join the Facebook group where we discuss those stories further and share other experiences.

Resources, Tips & Tricks

  • Joining various travel Facebook groups are a great place to ask questions even during crazy times.
  • Elite Status (Aeroplan) – Consider upgrading your points cards to an Elite package if possible.
  • Tickets can take time to process when using points. So booking last minute with points (without an “Elite” Status) might not be available when you’re ready to depart.
  • Always bring enough extra medication should you get stuck in a county longer than expected.
  • Make emotion-free decisions – take your time to work through the decision.
  • Air miles and similar points programs don’t always ticket right away.
  • Ask questions or help from any travel Facebook groups that you might be a part of.
  • In a lockdown situation if you can get out of any hostels and book an Airbnb with cooking facilities.
  • Book your flights with a credit card that has specific flight disruption and cancellation.
  • If you are unsure about the sudden change in a country call your insurance to make sure you still have coverage before you fly out.
  • Always have a contingency plan.

24 Nov 2020Surviving Assault In Morocco & Why Adjusting Your Travel Expectations Is Good (with Erin Hynes) | 1800:39:15

What would you do if…

while exploring Marrakech Morocco you dip down an alleyway on your way back to your accommodation where you suddenly find yourself fending off a male attacker. Also, why adjusting your travel expectations makes for a better trip.

About The Guest(s)

Erin Hynes aka Pina is a Canadian blogger, writer, and digital marketing specialist. She was 19 years old when she moved on a whim to Venice, Italy, where she spent many months working in a hostel. It was there that she earned the nickname Pina …because “Erin” is hard to pronounce if you speak Italian. She believes that travel is an incredible way to learn not only about the world but about yourself. But, travel is not accessible to all - those of us who can travel have privilege, and therefore, responsibility. Her blog will not only inspire you to travel but do it responsibly.

Resources. Tips & Tricks:

  • As a traveller, it is important to consider how different cultures can be when it comes to certain issues like gender parody. You can not hold people accountable (in their country) to the same standards that you may have in yours.
  • Unfortunately, travelling as a male is still different than travelling as a female in terms of safety, rights and treatment (some places more than others). While I’m not saying don’t travel - until this gets better, I do feel it's something that you should consider.
  • You need to travel for what a country has as opposed to what a country doesn’t have

It’s about making money successfully, spending money smartly, and managing it wisely – all in the arena of lifestyle travel. These three pillars form the foundation of her website.

What would you do if...

You found yourself getting sick after traveling – after a year of back-to-back trips you become ill with a stomach virus that just doesn’t seem to want to go away. Nothing seems to work; acupuncture, expensive meds and even clinical trials at local hospitals.

For her that means supporting responsible companies by doing her research, leaving a light environmental footprint wherever she goes, and ensuring her tourist dollars stay within local communities by avoiding chain hotels and restaurants.

The Corona Virus Chronicles (Week 1) with Kimberly Erin Davis

Kimberly Erin Davis shares her crazy tail of trying to get back to Canada from Peru during the COVIS-19 Pandemic. This included Peruvian nationals trying to reenter their country and non-Peruvian people leaving the country.

Stories of COVID-19 in the hostels, martial law and eventual repatriation will ensue…

Resources. Tips & Tricks:

  • Plan Ahead.
  • Check your bags instead of using a carry-on as it will be touched by fewer people (security, other passengers etc)
  • Be sure to bring masks, sanitary wipes and hand sanitizer
  • Mask must be worn at all times. Flight attendants can cite you for not wearing your mask and can ban you from the airline for a year
  • Try to board first of board last so you are not waiting in any lines or in the aisle waiting for people to put away their bags
  • Wipe down the seats, seat rests, the buckle, the monitor,  the tray table and the window shade
  • Sit next to the wind so people are not breathing on you as they walk up and down the aisle.
  • Airlines now cleaning and wiping down the planes instead of just taking out the trash
  • Airlines are no longer serving open drink service. Bottled water is provided.
  • FYI. Face shields do not work without a mask
  • Hotels are using contactless check-in so download the hotel's app.
  • re: Airbnb talk to the host to find out when the last guest was there.
  • When travelling internationally check the country and their rules and if they are allowing you in with your passport. Also, check what you might need - so countries are requiring that you have a COVID-19 Negative test within 72 hours of landing in their country. If there is a testing problem where you live you might not get your results back within 72 hours.
  • Some countries are requiring you to take a COVID-19 test on sight and asking you to quartine for 14 days. A lot of countries are doing mandatory quarantine and in some cases putting an ankle bracelet on you.  They may track your phone. If not following the rules you can face fines or be banned from their country.
  • Most insurance companies have excluded the pandemic for coverage
