PODCAST - LISTEN, WATCH, AND SUBSCRIBE https://linktr.ee/TransitionDrillPodcast
In this episode of the Transition Drill podcast, I got to talk with John Jones. John grew up wanting to be in the military and joined the Marine Corps in 1995; only after a hiccup trying to join the Army. John was fully committed to a career, but a life-altering experience with a roadside IED while deployed in Iraq in 2003 changed this. This pivotal moment not only tested his physical endurance but also his mental fortitude. John medically retired in 2007 at the rank of Staff Sergeant.
As he navigated the challenges of living with a disability, John's resilience and determination became a beacon for many facing similar paths in their veteran transition. John's recovery journey is a testament to the indomitable spirit of servicemen and women. We talk about the multifaceted challenges he faced, from grueling physical therapy to the emotional toll of reconciling with his new reality. Yet, with unwavering support from fellow veterans and dedicated professionals, John emerged with renewed purpose, ready to tackle the next chapter of his life. Also in 2007, he was featured in the documentary Alive Day Memories with James Gandolfini.
As John transitioned from active duty, he faced the universal question many veterans grapple with: What are the best jobs after leaving the military? Leveraging his unique skill set and experiences, John found his calling in the non-profit sector. Today, John is the Executive Director of VBC Giving Foundation, advocating for fellow veterans. VBC Giving Foundation is spearheading sustainable, safe, respectable, quality, and affordable housing for military veterans.
John’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the potential that lies within every veteran, even when faced with adversity.

In the latest episode of the Transition Drill podcast, we delve into the veteran transition of Matthew Morris, a Marine Corps Captain, navigating the intricate journey of transitioning from military to civilian life. From his early days, inspired by an air show and a close encounter with a Cobra helicopter, Matthew's passion for the military was evident. He reminisces about his time in the Sea Cadets, a Navy-sponsored program, and the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, emphasizing the invaluable lessons of discipline, leadership, and the importance of getting along with diverse groups of people.
Matthew achieved his childhood dream of becoming a Cobra pilot when he joined the Marine Corps in 2012. Unfortunately, non-military accidents and their related injuries caused Matthew’s loss of flight status in 2016 and his exit from the military in 2023. As he grappled with the loss of his pilot status, Matthew faced immense personal struggles, trying to find his place within the Marine Corps without the flying that once defined him. The podcast sheds light on the emotional and psychological challenges he endured, as he felt unmoored from his purpose and battled feelings of displacement and inadequacy. His journey was further complicated by a contentious fight with the military over his medical retirement, adding another layer of complexity to his transition journey.
The conversation also delves into the broader challenges many face during their veteran transition, especially when unforeseen circumstances alter their military trajectory. Matthew's story serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience required to navigate life after the military, especially when one's service doesn't go as planned. For those pondering their next steps post-service or facing unexpected hurdles, this podcast offers a candid look into one individual's journey and the broader challenges many confront during their transition.

He recounts the physical and mental trials of SEAL training, the challenges of leadership under pressure, and the life-changing moment that could have ended it all but instead deepened his commitment to serve beyond the uniform. At that time the police officers were also firefighters and Jose saw this as a way to get his foot in the door. After almost 2 years as a volunteer and eventually a reserve officer, he was hired as a full-time police officer in 1998 – he was 19 years old at the time. In 2011 he learned of a medical condition which forced his medical retirement in 2012. With no plan for a transition he put together a resume and started sending it out. Today he is an HR Director. Most important, as much as he misses being a cop, he enjoys his life more today. Since being forced into a medical retirement he’s been able to spend more quality time with his family and his passion, working on cars. 17 Feb 2025 | 183. Act of Valor - "Ajay" and Terminal List | From Thai Boxing to Navy SEAL SEN. CHIEF (Ret.). Ajay James | 04:56:15
The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. Helping you plan and implement strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. On this episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, we sit down with Ajay James, a Retired Navy SEAL Senior Chief, and a man who has lived multiple lives across different professions. His journey is one of relentless pursuit—of challenge, of purpose, and of transformation. From his roots in Trinidad to navigating life in the U.S., joining the military, and eventually becoming a special operations warrior, Ajay’s story is packed with insights for military veterans, first responders, and anyone facing a major career change. Ajay didn’t start out with a clear path toward the military. Growing up in a strict household with a father who was a police officer and engineer, discipline was ingrained in him early. However, academics never felt like the right fit, and his journey was anything but conventional. Before enlisting, he worked in fields like executive protection, trained as a Muay Thai fighter, and even modeled professionally. But deep inside, he knew he wanted something greater—a challenge that pushed him beyond his limits. That challenge came in the form of the Navy SEAL Teams. Despite enlisting at 33 years old, well past the typical age for special operations candidates, Ajay committed himself to the brutal training required to become an elite warrior. Through BUD/S, he was assigned to SEAL Team 5, serving in deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa. He eventually achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. But after years of military transition, deployments, and combat, Ajay faced his toughest mission yet: life after service. Leaving the SEAL Teams wasn’t just a career shift—it was an identity shift. Like many military veterans, he had to navigate the complexities of finding new purpose, building a civilian career, and adjusting to a world without the structured intensity of special operations. Today, Ajay has embraced veteran transition, helping others through mentorship, fitness, and leadership development. Whether working with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, or transitioning service members, he’s proving that the mission doesn’t end when the uniform comes off. His story is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of transformation. 25 Jul 2022 | 49. Marine Infantry Veteran. Today Clothing Designer and CEO of Trinidad3 Jeans. Trinidad Garcia | 01:24:03
From Machine Gun to Sewing Machine…Trinidad Garcia was already an accomplished clothing business entrepreneur, but he had always wanted to be a U.S. Marine. In 2008, at age 31 he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He deployed twice with 2/7, serving aboard Marine Expeditionary Units in the Pacific. Through two enlistments his dream of becoming a denim designer started burning inside of him again. While at his final assignment, a reserve unit in the Los Angeles area, he secretly applied to the prestigious Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) and was accepted. He balanced his schedule while not missing any of the exercises required, as well as not missing his classes at night. He joined forces with the local VA administrator for FIDM and founded the FIDM-SVA (Student Veterans of America) Chapter; to give those who followed him a better chance at navigating the rigors of student life. As he neared graduation in 2018, Trinidad founded his namesake brand – Trinidad3 Jeans. He experienced local success and wanted to expand his mission to support veterans with every pair of jeans, developing the catchphrase Powering Vets with Every Pair! In addition to operating his own clothing company, Trinidad works for Conflict Kinetics, a civilian company that trains military members through their Synthetic Marksmanship Training Systems (SMTS) - scenario based shooting situations. Through his own struggles with trauma, and loss of identity through his transition from the military, Trinidad got involved with Merging Vets & Players to create an environment where these warriors can share each other's strength and experience and can support each other in building fulfilling lives of service and strength. Despite these challenges, he found solace in sports and art, shaping his early identity. His family background, steeped in military service, including a World War II veteran grandfather and an Air Force veteran father, deeply influenced his path. Bill's father, leveraging the GI Bill set a precedent that Bill would later follow. Joining the Navy, Bill embarked on the arduous journey to become a Navy SEAL. His experiences in the military, coupled with a love for reading developed during brief stints in detention centers as a teenager, laid the foundation for his academic pursuits. Bill's journey through law school and into the legal profession was marked by the same intensity and commitment he displayed as a SEAL. His unique background brought a diverse perspective to his work as a lawyer, highlighting the multifaceted nature of veterans transitioning to civilian life. Additionally, Bill is the Founder and Lead SEAL of the Navy SEAL Foundation’s New York City SEAL Swim and 2023 was their 6th annual event. 24 Jul 2023 | 101. Retired Phoenix Cop | Survives Ambush Shooting | Today a Public Speaker & Author. Christopher Hoyer | 01:56:10
In this episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, I’m joined by Christopher Hoyer, a retired police officer from the Phoenix Police Department. Chris shares his journey from a troubled youth to a 20-year career in law enforcement, and his experiences dealing with trauma and its aftermath.
Chris grew up in a single-parent household, with his mother being his primary caregiver. His biological father, a Marine Force Recon who served in Vietnam, was absent from his life. Despite the challenges, Chris developed a no-quit attitude that carried him through his life.
His journey into law enforcement was not a straight path. After moving from New Hampshire to Arizona, he started a carpet installation business. It was during a random carpet installation that a customer suggested he would make a good police officer. This suggestion sparked a career change that led him to serve 20 years with the Phoenix Police Department.
During his service, Chris was involved in several shootings, including an ambush that took the life of his friend and fellow officer. He admits that he didn't properly address the trauma he experienced, which was a catalyst for his early retirement in 2018.
In the aftermath, Chris has become a public speaker, sharing his experiences and the lessons he learned about dealing with trauma. He's also written a book, "When the Day Comes, Training for the Fight," where he offers insights on how to survive a career as a first responder.
This episode is a must-listen for first responders, offering a raw and honest look at the realities of a career in law enforcement. It provides valuable insights into dealing with trauma and the importance of mental health in high-stress professions.

11 Sep 2023 | 108. From Badge to Bordeaux: A Retired Police Officer's Journey into the World of French Wine. Gary Faust | 01:03:42
PODCAST - LISTEN, WATCH, AND SUBSCRIBE https://linktr.ee/TransitionDrillPodcast
In this episode of the Transition Drill podcast I delve into the life and career transitions of Gary Faust, a former law enforcement officer. The conversation begins with a nostalgic look back at his upbringing in Orange County, where he was influenced by his father's dedication to law enforcement in Santa Ana. His mother, too, had a stint in the police department, making it almost inevitable for him to be drawn to the profession. As he reminisces about his early exposure to the world of policing through ride-alongs with his father, he acknowledges the profound impact it had on his decision to pursue a career in law enforcement. Gary retired in 2014 after 27 years between the Garden Grove and Huntington Beach Police Departments.
However, the narrative takes a turn when the topic shifts to life after police work. After serving diligently and rising to the rank of Lieutenant, he began contemplating what to do after retiring from law enforcement. An unexpected passion for wine, ignited by a wine class at the Montage in Laguna Beach, set him on a new path. This newfound interest led him to Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, where he transitioned from being a police officer to becoming a knowledgeable wine salesperson and eventually a French wine buyer. The transition wasn't without its challenges, as the wine industry initially seemed skeptical about what a former cop could bring to the table. However, with persistence and passion, he carved a niche for himself.
The podcast underscores the importance of adaptability and the courage to pursue new interests, even after a fulfilling career in a demanding field like law enforcement. It serves as an inspiration for those contemplating leaving law enforcement for a new career and emphasizes that it's never too late to chase a new dream or passion. The story is a testament to the endless possibilities that await after hanging up the badge and the importance of finding a new purpose post-retirement.

Ricky Savage served 25 years in the Marine Corps. He was assigned to aviation crews supporting F/A 18s and Ospreys. He achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer and retired as an Aviation Officer in 2015. Ricky had four (4) combat deployments, which, in his words, were scarier with each deployment. In his initial transition he went to college and then worked as a contractor in the aerospace industry from 2016-2020. At this same time, he was also the Director of Operations for the Wingman Foundation, a non-profit providing assistance to the families of Marine, Navy, and Coast Guard pilots who have died in combat. Through this same period he realized he was suffering from PTS symptoms and eventually went through a PTS program through the VA. In 2019 Ricky discovered Jiu Jitsu. In 2020, he officially retired from working, and through good investments became a self-funded “professional” Jiu Jitsu competitor. Today he is a purple belt and has competed in 22 tournaments. He has also gone back to college to study philosophy in what he has coined, his warrior monk journey. PODCAST - LISTEN, WATCH, AND SUBSCRIBE https://linktr.ee/TransitionDrillPodcast
In this episode I had a candid conversation with Shanon Morris. Shanon shares her unexpected journey to the Naval Academy. Growing up in the suburbs of Illinois, she had never heard of the Naval Academy until a flyer arrived in her mail during her high school years. A subsequent trip to Washington, D.C., and a tour of the academy changed the trajectory of her life. Despite initial challenges and thoughts of quitting during her early days at the academy, she found her footing and even founded the dance team, showcasing her leadership skills.
Her upbringing, marked by a blend of Taiwanese and American cultures, instilled in her the values of discipline, education, and hard work. As a competitive figure skater and dancer, she learned the importance of teamwork and coordination, skills that would later serve her well in the military. However, her aspirations weren't initially aligned with the military; she had dreams of joining the intelligence community, inspired by her love for books about the CIA.
Upon graduation from the Naval Academy in 2014, she found herself on a ship, deployed to the Middle East. While the experience wasn't what she had envisioned, it taught her resilience and adaptability. Her goal remained to transition to the intelligence community. However, a severe car accident and subsequent medical challenges cut her military journey short, leading to her exit after four years.
The decision to leave the military was not easy. Having attained her master’s degree in Homeland Security, she has since worked as an Intel Analyst with the FBI and she has worked for Google. Today Shanon and her husband, Matt, set out on a new venture: starting their business, Hop On Hold On where they consult veterans on transition from the military and help them build a life they’ve always dreamed of.
This podcast is a testament to Shanon’s resilience and adaptability, making it a must-listen for first responders, law enforcement, military veterans, and anyone facing life's unexpected challenges. Her story underscores the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and the courage to chart one's own path, even when faced with adversity.

10 Feb 2025 | 182. Marine Corps to Army E9 (Ret.) | Today Military Affairs at PMI | Transition Advice. Matt Quick | 01:19:15
The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. Helping you plan and implement strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. In this episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, Matt Quick, Retired E9, whose journey spans the Marine Corps, the Army, and now the civilian world, where he helps service members and first responders navigate their military transition and career change. Matt’s story begins in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he grew up as a competitive athlete with a rebellious streak. Inspired by his brother’s service as a Marine, Matt enlisted in the Marine Corps right after high school. Boot camp at Parris Island transformed him, instilling discipline, confidence, and pride. He excelled in military leadership, working in personnel administration and legal services, but in 1997, the Marine Corps downsized, leaving him with two choices: switch to infantry or get out. Instead, Matt made a bold move—he transitioned to the Army. That transition wasn’t easy. Despite being an E-5 in the Marines, the Army delayed his entry just long enough to drop him to E-4, a frustrating but defining moment. Assigned to Fort Leavenworth, he quickly adapted, proving himself in leadership roles that took him to Bosnia, the Pentagon, and Iraq. His passion for career counseling and retention led to rapid promotions, ultimately achieving the rank of Sergeant Major. After 25 years of service, Matt faced his own military to civilian transition. Unlike many veterans, he had prepared—he was debt-free, had built a strong network, and understood the challenges of finding military veteran jobs. But even with those advantages, the process was eye-opening. He initially pursued a GS job, but federal hiring politics steered him in a new direction. Today, Matt works with the Project Management Institute (PMI), helping military veterans, translate their skills into civilian careers. He travels to military bases, educating service members on SkillBridge, project management careers, and professional certifications that can open doors. His mission is simple: to make sure no veteran or first responder navigates career change alone. Whether you’re an active-duty Marine, Soldier, Sailor, or Airman, a police officer, or a firefighter planning your next steps, this episode is filled with military transition advice, career planning insights, and real-world strategies to help you succeed in life after service. After showing himself to be someone who got after it, he was recommended to work with the Navy SEALs. Going out on hundreds, if not thousands, of missions with the SEALs he proved himself to be more than an interpreter, he was a brother. He achieved the honor of being able to wear the Trident without having gone through BUD/S training. In 2009, after he was identified as an enemy of Islam and his family’s safety was threatened, he and his family fled Iraq with the help of his brother SEALs. Today is a U.S. citizen. His life and stories of missions he went on with the SEALs are chronicled in the book he co-authored, Codename: Johnny Walker. 22 Aug 2022 | 53. Marine Corps OCS | Medical Discharge | Today a Hollywood Actress & Movie Producer | Veteran Powered Films. Julia Ling | 00:55:51
Julia Ling’s parents escaped Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia and came to the United States. Julia grew up in a very strict household. From a young age Julia knew she wanted to serve in the military but knew there was no way her parents would support it. After graduating high school, she enrolled in college to be an engineer. With no interest, at that time, in acting she accompanied a friend to an acting audition. Fate stepped in and Julia ended up getting an offer for an acting job. This led to multiple acting roles during the early 2000s, including a multiple season run on the TV show Chuck as the character Anna Wu (2007 – 2010). Today she has the upcoming reoccurring role of Danni Prescott on the TV show Emergency: LA (2023). Her early acting roles forced Julia to put college on pause, which did not make her parents happy. Moreover, the desire to serve never went away. In 2014, after going back and completing her college degree, Julia joined the Marine Corps and entered OCS. Unfortunately, a medical situation, which I’ll let her explain, forced her out. The crazy thing is she never told her parents that she joined the military. Today, in addition to her acting, Julia is also a partner in Veteran Powered Films, a film production company empowering veterans, servicemembers, and first responders to create and tell their stories through film. Their first movie Tango Down, which Julia also acted in, was released in 2019.
