This week JJ and Steve are joined by Ocean, from TNR’s Silver Linings podcast, to discuss Julius Onah’s 2019 film Luce. Adapted by JC Lee from his own play, this smartly written story that blends elements of a thriller, family drama, social commentary, and character study gives them plenty to discuss. This is also a film full of familiar faces and strong performances. Unfortunately its limited release prevented it from reaching audiences.

It’s not easy to delve into this story without setting off some spoilers, so listen to the first few minutes of this episode to find out if this is a film for you.

BONUS - parenting tips for teens included in this episode!

24 Nov 2019All About Nina00:51:47

There are films that come and go without notice that are better than the majority of films currently playing at your local cineplex. A film like All About Nina is the reason we have Trailer Rewind.

The challenge with describing what makes All About Nina such an entertaining and moving film is that it’s not one clearly identifiable standout element. This is a clear example of a film where the collaboration and contribution of everyone in front of and behind the camera results in a finely crafted cinematic experience.

Steve and JJ discuss the smart and mature writing from writer/director Eva Vives and how she slowly and quietly assembles story and characters to a climactic moment on stage that you will not forget. This is the second film starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead to be discussed on Trailer Rewind. Based on her consistent ability to deliver compelling performances, it won’t be the last.

"People eat because they are hungry; I want to make food that makes people stop eating."

To start off a new year of Trailer Rewind Steve and JJ sit down for a meal with John Wells’ 2015 film Burnt. This was Pete's pick because he just loves films set in restaurant kitchens almost as much as he loves zombie films. If only there were a film that combined those two genres!

This is the second pairing of Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, and JJ just eats it up. Steve, on the other hand, was expecting something different and found this didn’t quite suit his palate.

Is it possible to enjoy a movie with an unlikable main character? Did Harvey Weinstein tamper too much by insisting that Alicia Vikander have a character written for her added to the script? How could Steve possibly think this was going to be like a heist film? Is Burnt about food or redemption, or both? Listen in for the first of many Trailer Rewind episodes this year that won’t give JJ a fright.

“Anyone can torture, but to break a person without harming physically, that's an art."

We’re keeping with The Next Reel 2017 theme of “Let’s Scare JJ.” Prisoners tortured in secret underground tunnels! A power-crazed cult leader! But even more frightening - it really happened! This month we rewind to Chile in 1973 for Colonia, starring Emma Watson, Daniel Bruhl, and Michael Nyqvist for a film based on true events at Colonia Dignidad.

We discuss the challenge of basing a film on true events while attempting to balance a suspenseful thriller with a love story. Overall it's the performances that drive this film and will keep you engaged as this film plays out the 132 days inside the compound as Lena (Watson) and Daniel (Bruhl) attempt to escape. We agree that it’s not likely to be a film we remember. Which is a shame because we agree that it’s an interesting story that people should be aware of.

For a special double-feature check out April’s Filmboard for The Circle, also starring Emma Watson in a story about a mysterious cult-like organization.

"Bums and losers. That’s what you are."

In the first episode of our Exiles In Space double feature Steve and JJ discuss Claire Denis’ first English language film, High Life. With the familiar faces of Juliette Binoche and Robert Pattinson leading this cast of exiles, it is easy to assume that this will be a conventional, and somewhat mainstream science fiction film. What Claire Denis delivers is far from it. This nonlinear tale challenges its audience with moments of brutality and violence as well as harshly unemotional displays of human sexuality.

They agree that it's artfully made, that it has sci-fi elements, and that it is not an enjoyable or comfortable viewing experience. In their conversation, they briefly discuss their own reactions and responses to this film and what it could all mean. However, what they can’t tell you is what this film is going to mean to you.

23 Jun 2021Please Stand By00:45:45

When is a film that has scenes with Kirk and Spock not a Star Trek movie? Well . . . when it’s a film about a young woman writing an epic screenplay for a Star Trek contest. A lack of knowledge about or love for Star Trek shouldn’t be a barrier to watching Please Stand By.

This is the second film adapted from a play on this season of Trailer Rewind. It’s also the second film this season to feature an atypical main character. The result is another enjoyable gem.

The first entry in our Aspiring Singers double feature takes Steve and JJ across the Atlantic for 2018's Wild Rose. Despite a familiar story of working class woman striving to attain her dreams, there were several unique directions this story takes to keep it feeling fresh.

At a glance there's not a lot to make this movie stand out as something to watch. And neither Steve nor JJ is are fans of Country & Western music. Did that stop them from enjoying Wild Rose? Listen to the latest episode of Trailer Rewind to find out.

07 Oct 2020Villains (2019)00:52:48

Just when you’ve binged everything on your watchlist and need something new or unexpected to watch Trailer Rewind is back with a season filled with new guests!

We start the new season with The Film Board’s Tommy Handsome in a conversation about the dark comedy Villains. From the 2016 Blacklist, this script has all the trappings of a calling card to break into the industry and the sharp dialogue was enough to attract Bill Skarsgård, Jeffrey Donovan, and Kyra Sedgwick.

Tommy and Steve look into what makes this film work, the strength of the writing, and what, if anything, a viewer may take away from this film.

"See? This is why I hate time. I can't enjoy my sesame chicken because of that."

This month’s Trailer Rewind is Andy’s pick from our Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore episode in December 2014. Justin and Steve look at what made this Andy’s pick and delve into whether this film has a science fiction element to it or not. Listen in to find out if this romantic drama starring Justin Long and Emmy Rossum is out of this world or crashes and burns.

28 Apr 2021Papillon (2017)00:50:09

One of Mark Twain’s famous aphorisms is: “A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read.” For JJ and Steve the 1973 film Papillon very much fulfills that definition. Neither of them have seen the version starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, so don’t expect comparisons to that classic film. Instead JJ and Steve focus on their struggle with the 2017 version starring Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek.

When is a movie that features characters trying to break out of prison not a prison break movie? How can you watch a man earn his freedom and not feel elated? These are just a few of the questions that JJ and Steve dig into during their conversation about Papillon (2017).

20 Mar 2018Cuban Fury00:46:47

"Once I put those shoes on, I never wanted to take them off."

It’s time to put on your rubber-soled salsa shoes and hit the floor with JJ and Steve. This month they have got fire in their heels as they talk about Cuban Fury. For March they are lightening the mood with this romantic comedy from 2014 starring Nick Frost, Rashida Jones, Chris O’Dowd, and Ian McShane. This was Pete’s trailer pick from April 2014, and he predicted that writer Jon Brown was going to bring some of the same offensive humor that he brought to the tv series 'Misfits.' And boy did he ever! If there is one thing JJ wants you to know about this film it is how crude and offensive Chris O’Dowd’s character Drew is. If you can handle the crude shenanigans you will find that this is a film that is not just a romantic comedy but also the story of a man who rediscovers what truly brings joy to his heart.

26 May 2021The Goldfinch01:09:43

JJ and Steve are joined by Tommy to make sense of the puzzle that is The Goldfinch. It’s not that the story is complex or difficult to decipher. It’s not that there’s a mystery to solve. It’s just that it is very challenging to describe why this film doesn’t work. Why does a Pulitzer Prize winning novel not translate to the big screen? Is there not enough, or is it too much? Is “beautiful disaster” the most appropriate description?

Join JJ, Steve, and Tommy on their quest to solve this mystery because misery loves company.

19 Sep 2017Little Sister00:36:19

"Look at you girl. All grown up like a librarian or something."

This month JJ and Steve are dealing with family drama in Zach Clark’s 2016 film Little Sister.

With a mix of nuns, GWAR, drug-laced muffins, and parenting failures this film proudly displays its independent film badge. With no clear, clean answers to many of the questions it raises, this film asks us to embrace a story with all its faults and disappointments, just as the characters must choose to accept their lives even though they may be far from what they hoped or dreamed they would be. Join us for a discussion of our pre-Halloween film and decide if Little Sister is worth making part of the family.

02 Dec 2020Les Miserablés (2019)00:58:15

It’s a rare occasion when Steve and Andy have an in-depth conversation about a film. One thing you can be sure of is that they know how to pick them. For this Trailer Rewind Steve and Andy are traveling abroad for a suspenseful ride along with Chris, Gwada, and Stephane Ruiz in 2019’s Les Misérables.

While this film hits some familiar notes in the gritty street cop genre, they both agree that the final act of this film raises it above other films and stands strong on its own. As they discuss the plot of the film they touch on the themes of the film and the larger statement being made. It’s a powerful film that left its mark on both of them.

For completionists, Ladj Ly’s short film Les Misérables (2017) that was expanded into the feature film is available here.

20 Jun 2017The History of Future Folk00:10:25

"Hondo!"

This month, Steve digs through the archives to revisit The History of Future Folk, a quirky indie that punches well above its weight. Yes, it’s a musical comedy about banjo-playing aliens. Yes, it’s the fictional backstory of a comic duo you’ve likely never heard of. But in all the indsider-ness of _Future Folk, there’s a delightful amount of heart that is so much more gratifying because my expectations were low going into it. Most gratifying? After re-watching the film, it just gets better.

So do yourselves a favor and check out _The History of Future Folk_… quickly and quietly for Hondo.

03 Jul 2018The Congress00:49:45

"We want to scan you, all of you, your body, your face, your emotions, your laughter, your tears. We want to own this thing called Robin Wright."

Just before the summer break, Steve and JJ take a trippy ride to The Congress. Based on Stanislaw Lem’s 1971 novel The Futurological Congress, this was Pete’s trailer pick from May 23, 2014. There is a lot going on in this movie, especially once we get to the animated zone Abrahama City. Centered around Robin Wright, played by Robin Wright, this film explores the next generation of filmmaking, the ability to convert a person into corporate property, and the bond between a mother and son. We also get Harvey Keitel, John Hamm, Danny Huston, Paul Giamatti, Kodi Smit-McPhee and a brief animated cameo from one of Hollywood’s biggest names, in this mind-bending exploration of what the future may hold for us. Underneath all of the crazy there is an interesting parable about entertainment, celebrity, and the role of the audience. Once they start down the swirling, rainbow path to Abrahama, JJ and Steve may not make it back to the real world.

07 Jul 2021The Endless01:14:31

The Endless treads into some creepy territory, so JJ brought in some backup. We are pleased to have Tommy join us for our discussion of this story of two brothers that escaped from a weird death cult. Is it a cult, or just a commune of people that like being off the grid? Is this a horror film or a sci-fi film? Can it be both?

The Endless had a very limited and short theatrical run, so it’s likely that you haven’t even heard of it. It has bounced around on different streaming services over the past few years. It’s not always easy to find on a service that you are subscribed to, but JJ, Steve, and Tommy agree that this mindbending and weird story is one worth finding and watching.

For some reason this film about building a 1000 mile underground fiber optic connection was also buried underground. In this story about an attempt to set a speed record in round trip communications JJ and Steve find that it’s the back half of the story where this film reveals its true intent.

19 Mar 2019I, Tonya00:54:03

"It was like being abused all over again. Only this time it was by you. All of you. You're all my attackers too."

If you listened to our Green Book Filmboard episode you know that most of us were not happy with the Oscars. As a salve to their wounds, Steve and JJ picked an Oscar winner from last year for this month’s Trailer Rewind. Steve also felt guilty for the darker tone of the past few picks that JJ has watched, so this month they are talking about I, Tonya. Not only is this one of JJ’s favorite films, but upon re-watching it Steve has found that there is more to this film than he thought.

Although most people are familiar with “The Incident” there is much more to this tale about Tonya Harding. If you are old enough to remember the 1994 Winter Olympic Games then there’s no spoilers to this one. Watch it on Hulu before joining our conversation about this highly entertaining and unconventional film.

Everything from the release date and the blurbs from critics told us this was going to be an Oscar contender. Nicole Kidman was delivering a performance unlike any we had seen from her before. Director Karyn Kusama had moved from film to television for nearly a decade until she returned with 2015’s The Invitation. Destroyer was a highly anticipated follow-up.

And then audiences failed to turn out for this film. Or was it a studio that failed to deliver a successful marketing and promotional strategy? Perhaps the Nicole Kidman audiences wanted last winter was on the screen in Aquaman and Boy Erased. Whatever the cause, Destroyer came and went from theaters and was forgotten.

On this month’s Trailer Rewind JJ and Steve dig into this gritty crime drama to uncover what works, what doesn’t, and ultimately determine if there’s a hidden treasure undeath it all.

"I'm sure you'll find a solution, honey."

Steve couldn’t ask JJ to stomach this month’s film, so he brought Andy in to chew the fat on this one. Andy admits that if he were at this school he would have been out of there right away. Steve, as usual, thinks this film may be about more than it seems. They both agree Julia Ducournau created something unique. This isn’t a horror film, even though there is a lot of blood, gore, and flesh wounds. But it isn’t a typical family drama either. FInd out what is at the heart of the film that gained notoriety for turning stomachs.

12 Feb 2019The Bachelors00:50:41

"It’s practically a universal law that no man has ever looked good in man panties"

Consider yourself warned that J.K. Simmons (and his majestic beard) are going to bring a tear to your eye. This month Steve and JJ take a road trip with the straight to streaming film The Bachelors. It treads on well worn indie territory - new kid at a school, family trauma/drama, quirky moments for comedy - but can writer director Kurt Voelker save these guys from becoming a cliché?

29 Nov 2016The Two Faces of January00:31:31

". . . another victim of the cruel tricks gods play on men”

It’s back to 2014 again for JJ and Steve as they dig into The Two Faces of January, Andy’s pick from February 2014. Adapted from the novel by Patricia Highsmith, this thriller set in the early 60’s looks and sounds like a classic Hitchcock film. JJ and Steve dig into the difference between the appearance and the substance of the story, the challenges of identifying who the two faces are, and wonder whether the novel may sufficiently fill in some gaps in the film.

There are many mysteries that are unearthed in The Two Faces of January but will the answers leave you feeling satisfied?

18 Nov 2020The Report00:53:31

”If it works, why do you need to do it 183 times?”

File TNR 80120201111 audio under review pursuant to PL 107-56 Case # TR46 SUMMARY - subjects Peter D Wright and Stephen D Sarmento conducted an in-depth discussion regarding the Committee Study of the Central Intelligence Agency's Detention and Interrogation Program. Analysis and review of recorded comments is ongoing. A favorable bias was detected regarding the fictional portrayal of the events that led up to the creation of the 67,000-page report.

Both Wright and Sarmento made numerous statements regarding their favorable opinion of the video file hosted exclusively on Amazon Prime. It is readily apparent that this fictionalized account, which includes performances from many recognizable actors, is intended to provoke curiosity and further investigation by members of the public into the unclassified Executive Summary report of the Committee Study. Wright and Sarmento encourage public review of the fictionalized portrayal and the readily available Executive Summary.

Further surveillance has been requested to determine additional context regarding the types and quality of video recordings that received comparably favorable comments from Wright and Sarmento. Audio files are easily located through a shell organization named “The Next Reel”.

Additional documents referenced during the recorded conversation have been located at https://www.amazon.com/adlp/thereportmovie

24 Nov 2021Antebellum00:58:16

JJ and Steve wrap up this season of Trailer Rewind with a powerful film. This is one of the few films that JJ doesn’t want to spoil. He and Steve both agree that you should avoid this trailer until after you have watched the film. Antebellum takes its time to tell its story, but JJ and Steve agree that the payoff is worth the wait.

Why all the secrecy about a film that doesn’t have great reviews on Letterboxd or IMdB? Did Antebellum suffer from not having a theatrical release? How do you categorize and recommend a film that you can't say much about for fear of spoiling it? These are the questions they hope to answer on this season finale episode.

Is this film for you? Within the first 15 minutes of this episode you will know whether you will push play, or keep scrolling.

JJ and Steve return from their summer break with a big bang. This month they attempt to survive the brutal shootout in Ben Wheatley’s 2016 film Free Fire.

How many rounds does it take to get to the end of the shootout in Free Fire? Let’s count. One, two, three . . .

18 Oct 2016Odd Thomas00:44:49

"I may see dead people, but, by God, I do something about it."

Mining book series for films is an all to frequent occurrence. Some are able to successfully make the transition from page to screen, while others struggle. The Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz would seem an ideal source to tap for a film adaptation.

This month JJ and Steve visit Pico Mundo to solve a mystery with Odd Thomas in a very special Anton Yelchin memorial Trailer Rewind episode. They discuss the unique tone of the film and how it balances the horror, mystery, and comedy components of the story to create an enjoyable and light film. They talk about the mixed strengths of the cast and special effects and how they create a world that’s grounded in reality yet is infused with elements of an idealized small town.

It’s a quirky film that’s ripe for viewing as a Halloween treat for teens.

27 Oct 2021Skin00:50:01

JJ and Steve launch into the final trio of films for this season with 2018’s Skin.

This is a tough film to recommend because it’s not entertainment, and it doesn’t feel right to call this story enjoyable. However, both JJ and Steve agree that there is something to be learned from stories like this. It is a film that is likely to start great conversations with friends. What draws young, lost boys to organizations like the Vinlanders Social Club? How can a sense of belonging to a family lead people to hateful acts of violence? Is it possible for people to ever leave their past behind them?

While wrestling with reasons to recommend Skin JJ and Steve coin a new phrase to describe films like it. In retrospect it’s a category that fits many films they have discussed.

Is this film for you? Within the first 15 minutes of this episode you will know whether you will push play, or keep scrolling.

21 Oct 2020Banana Split00:50:56

There’s nothing to make a father more uncomfortable than sitting with his teenage daughter watching a film that includes honest and frankly discussions of teens sexuality. Well . . . there is one thing more uncomfortable. A film that has teens and parent having explicit, yet humorous, conversations about their own sexuality. In this very special episode of Trailer Rewind, Steve Sarmento and Rob Kubasko guide parents through the difficult landscape of having honest conversations with your teen about being sexually active. . . in the context of a somewhat raunchy, fresh take on the teen rom-com.

Other important questions they will tackle: Just which one of the Sprouse twins is in this film and will Rob’s daughter ever forgive him for not getting it right? How did Bart Simpson hold up the release of this film? Why is this film called Banana Split?

16 Dec 2020The Last Black Man In San Francisco01:20:32

Today one of our newest TNR voices, Ocean, takes a trip with Steve to meet The Last Black Man in San Francisco.

They agree that this is a film that has a distinctive opening, but there’s a sharp difference of opinion at the heart of this episode. What does Steve see that Ocean doesn’t? Does Ocean have valid points, or is a certain amount of suspended disbelief necessary for all films? Find out what makes the last Trailer Rewind of 2020 a contentious one.

24 Mar 2020Aniara00:43:35

JJ and Steve find themselves among another group of exiles in space. This time it is the Aniara, a spaceship taking passengers from Earth to Mars. Despite its luxurious setting on an interplanetary cruise ship, this film does delve into dark territory — literally and figuratively. Based on a book-length science fiction poem written by Swedish Nobel laureate Harry Martinson in 1956, this film explores the impact isolation, anxiety, and despair can have on a society.

Within the first 10 minutes of this episode you will know if this film is for you or not. During the remaining 30 JJ and Steve explore what works, what doesn’t, and the impact this film had on them. Do we really understand how vast space is? What happens when the power of authority is threatened by truth? Are there lessons for us on our own endless, although elliptical, journey through space? Aniara tackles some big questions, JJ and Steve don’t have all the answers, but the would love to have you listen and join the conversation on Discord.

04 Aug 2021Landline00:53:46

JJ and Steve travel back to 1995. That time when landlines were ubiquitous and had yet surrendered to the internet, cell phones and texting. Although Landline is from 2017, it feels like a close relative to the mid-90s indie film scene that was bursting onto the festival circuit at the time.

Landline has an amazing cast: Jenny Slate, Jay Duplass, John Turturro, Edie Falco, and a true standout performance from Abby Quinn. Unfortunately they are given a script that fails to commit to fully being a comedy or a tragedy. Instead it straddles the fence and never fully commits to either side and exists in that painful and awkward space between. JJ and Steve discuss the awkwardness of not knowing whether to grin or cringe, because laughing or crying would be too strong a reaction.

29 Sep 2021The Yellow Birds00:55:43

During their seasons on Trailer Rewind JJ and Steve have seen a lot. But will it prepare them for The Yellow Birds? Have years of viewing violence numbed them to the atrocities and dehumanizing experience of war? Will they be the same when they come back from watching The Yellow Birds? Is the talented cast of Alden Ehrenreich, Tye Sheridan, Toni Collette, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Patric and Jack Huston able to hold this film together?

20 Nov 2018Hostiles01:01:28

"I've killed everything that's walked or crawled. If you do it enough, you get used to it."

JJ and Steve are heading out west this month. It's a long and grueling journey, and one of them may not make it to the end. It’s a Trailer Rewind first. This month they dig into the Saturday Matinee archives to find a film to talk about. They are in new territory with Scott Cooper’s 2017 film, Hostiles.

Even though JJ was spared the experience of watching Raw last month, he is emotionally raw after the first 6 minutes of Hostiles. This was an unpleasant journey for him and he isn’t willing to take it again. He gets picky on this one and readily points out all its flaws and the choices made that he has issues with. If only there had been more Ben Foster.

Steve enjoyed this dark and emotionally cold road trip, but focused on the transformation of characters during the long trek and what message that has for us today. Steve borrows a line from Andy and admits that he even though he has “quibbles” he still enjoys it.

They both agree it's a good idea to watch 3:10 to Yuma again. At least they have found some common ground. Isn’t that what we all hope to find when we take a troubling journey with someone - a shared experience that connects us together in ways that we haven’t expected?

27 Feb 2018Anomalisa00:50:16

"Sometimes there's no lesson. That's a lesson in itself."

Call the maid for turn down service, because this month JJ and Steve take on a movie that takes place in a hotel room. JJ and Steve spend time with Charlie Kaufman’s 2015 film, Anomalisa and discuss why it is an unsettling film. Although they both agree it is not a film that they will watch again, they end up giving it three stars. What is it that they find so compelling in the stop-motion animated film? Perhaps it’s the ever present voice of Tom Noonan, or could it be the rousing speech delivered by Michael Stone at the film’s climax? Listen in to this month’s Trailer Rewind to find out what makes Anomalisa an anomaly.

09 Jun 2021The Peanut Butter Falcon00:51:36

Steve has a 15-minute rule. You have got to give a film 15 minutes to prove itself. If after 15 minutes you can easily walk away, then do it. Don’t waste your time on a movie, if after 15 minutes you haven’t connected with the characters, or the story hasn’t drawn you in.

Don’t worry. The Peanut Butter Falcon is not a bad movie. JJ and Steve agree that the beginning may not draw everyone in. Give it time. By the time the paths of our two main characters cross you will likely be invested in them enough to want to watch the rest of their journey.

Is there magical realism woven into the end of this film? Possibly. Will kids want to carve watermelon helmets after watching this? Maybe. Is this a film that the whole family can watch together and enjoy? Steve and JJ disagree. Listen in to find out why.

15 Oct 2019Woman Walks Ahead00:49:57

The challenge with historical films based on actual events is finding the right character to lead the audience through the story. JJ has made it clear that he will follow Jessica Chastain anywhere. Neither Steve nor JJ are aficionados of American history. While this is an interesting story to be told, they both failed to find an emotional connection to a truly tragic story. All of the pieces for a gorgeously shot and heart-wrenching tale are present, but something gets in the way and prevents this film from fulfilling the promise presented in the trailer. Is it the accents? The editing? Are JJ and Steve both heartless?

Woman Walks Ahead is an informative film that tells an important story but falls short in showing and feeling the true heart of the story. Steve and JJ discuss the elements that are present in the film and how well they work and question what prevents this film from being better than the sum of its parts.

”A senator’s priority isn’t representing the people, it’s keeping his ass in office."

This month JJ and Steve are tasked with keeping up with Miss Sloane. This drastically overlooked film from December 2016 is based on a stellar script from first-time writer Jonathan Perera and directed by John Madden. This isn’t a political drama, it’s not a thriller, but there is a big question to be answered that drives this story. Find out why fans of Michael Clayton and Erin Brockovich will likely enjoy this hidden gem. The most important thing to know about Miss Sloane is that you don’t want to be spoiled. So check it out, and then tune in to our conversation.

17 Sep 2019Leave No Trace00:52:58

After JJ’s stressful experience for September’s Film Board, he deserved something more comfortable and less stressful. Leave No Trace is not only set in his hometown of Portland, but it's PG-rating was certain to guarantee that this would be an anxiety-free viewing experience for him.

Steve and JJ follow the story of Will and his daughter Tom from wilderness to civilization and discuss the perils and choices that face them in both places. JJ provides some geography lessons and speculates why Leave No Trace and our January 2019 film, Lean On Pete, which are both set in the Portland area, are about unhoused teens.

25 Sep 2018Don't Think Twice00:54:40

"Has anyone out there had a particularly hard day?"

What are you waiting for? Just press play. Don’t stop to think, just say yes and press the button because JJ and Steve are working without a script. This month they take a look at Mike Birbiglia’s 2016 film Don’t Think Twice.

You may be expecting a comedy because of familiar funny faces like Gillian Jacobs (Community) and Keegan Michael Key (Key & Peele), however, this is not that film. As the character Allison (Kate Micucci) says “It's like when something sounds funny, but it isn't funny.” Mike Birbiglia has created an exploration of the pursuit of dreams, and the challenges of falling short of them.. JJ and Steve have a deep discussion about a film that explores how these characters cope with the struggle of living a life working toward unrealized goals. It gets heavy. It gets serious. It’s unexpected commentary about the human condition in a film about comedy.

01 Sep 2021The Book of Henry00:52:37

The Book of Henry is not the film any of us expected. This is a film that splits audiences - including JJ, Steve and Tommy. JJ says it is at least 3 or 4 films. Special guest Tommy doesn’t rate it as much of a film. And Steve was thoroughly enjoying this YA story about a precocious 12 year old . . and then it took a turn.

Is this film for you? Within the first 15 minutes of this episode you will know whether you will push play, or keep scrolling.

16 Apr 2019The Vanishing of Sidney Hall00:45:25

"Let’s say you did write a novel. What would it be about?"

Sometimes movies are better than the books they are based on. But are there movies that would be better if they had been a book?

This month Steve and JJ following the story of Sidney Hall, a young novelist who writes a book that impacts a generation and soon after, he disappears. Steve and JJ discuss non-traditional storytelling, YA novels, tropes and cliches, and emotional manipulation. This film should check all the boxes for Steve, but it doesn’t. JJ was wary due to a low Rotten Tomato rating, but he came out on the other side having enjoyed it.

The Vanishing of Sidney Hall may not have been the film we thought it was going to be. A cast of familiar faces in a film that was released into theaters on only 10 screens?! Steve gives his lowest rating ever to an A24 film - and one that focuses on high school students?! What is going on?!

26 May 2020The Kindergarten Teacher (American)00:59:57

JJ and Steve finish off the first half of 2020 with 2018's The Kindergarten Teacher. This is an American remake of 2014's The Kindergarten Teacher from Israel. Their discussion touches on the challenges of adapting an artistic film for different culture and a more mainstream audience.

There is no doubt that this is truly Maggie Gyllenhaall's film. However, this pushes the story into an area that differs from the original. Changes to the plot, additional scenes with family members, and a minor change to the ending make this a distinctly different film. While it is a more accessible film it has lost many of the elements that JJ and Steve enjoyed and appreciated in the original.

Although they express their preferences, they provide enough of a comparison to make it easy for you to know which version of The Kindergarten Teacher you will want to add to your watchlist.

"You and I were happier than any two people ever could have been."

If your birthday is in June, you’re a Gemini. As a special treat for our Gemini listeners we are talking about twins this month. Ansel Elgort plays both John and Jonathan in this under the radar film from first time director Bill Oliver.

Steve was excited about this one when it was his trailer pick last October. JJ is always up for a character driven film, especially one with an open ending. From comparisons to Black Mirror to creative ways to disorient the audience while keeping them engaged, Steve and JJ try to determine if this is really a sci-fi film. Along the way they try to answer many questions, starting with “why does a film with a cast of familiar faces go straight to digital release?”

18 Aug 2021The Souvenir00:50:32

Joanna Hogg’s 2019 film The Souvenir is based on her own experiences as a student filmmaker in the 1980s. This leads JJ and Steve to again ponder the question of whether such a personal story can be fully accessible to an audience. They are sharply divided on their ratings, but agree that this isn’t a film for everyone. Listen in to the episode to find out who they think this film is for.

10 Nov 2021If Beale Street Could Talk00:50:21

It would be a disservice to the film to just say that JJ and Steve are just checking a box with “If Beale Street Could Talk”. While both of them had it on their list of films to see in 2018 neither of them ever got around to seeing it until now. They can now check that box, but both of them agree that its a film not to be missed.

This is a gorgeous film to look at. Its beauty combined with a simple and straightforward story makes this a deceptive film. Its relevant and topical without being confrontational. It’s a film you will want to watch with a friend because you may have a strong desire to talk about it.

It’s a film that should be seen by more people. Is this film for you? Within the first 15 minutes of this episode you will know whether you will push play, or keep scrolling.

28 Apr 2020Vox Lux00:43:13

Let's just get this out of the way. Steve and JJ are really split on this one. JJ was disappointed that this was more of a poem than a film and wasn't happy about the execution of this film. Steve, on the other hand, gives it praise for its ambitiousness and the opening sequence before the titles.

They spend a bit of time discussing the powerful opening sequense that JJ describes as "a sledgehammer to the face" and Steve considers a "wonderful short film" on its own. There is beauty and darkness in this film that they delve into. In the end they agree that this film falls short of its potential. Listen to them get into what works and does not work in Vox Lux.

17 Dec 2019Anna and the Apocalypse00:45:35

For the last Trailer Rewind of the decade we wanted to bring you something fun to watch with friends. Or is it? Does a holiday setting make a film a holiday film? Is there such a thing as a zombie holiday film? In a genre that’s on its 3rd wave of popularity is it possible to create a fresh take?

Based on the trailer for Anna and The Apocalypse, Steve was ready to host a sing-along at his house. JJ is not a horror fan, but what about musicals? Will he have a song in his heart? A musical black comedy teen zombie film seems like a stretch. Does this mashup work, or does a story full of lifeless clichés keep this from becoming a lively and fresh take on a half-dead genre?

Countdown to the end of the decade, or to the end of the film, with us on this episode of Trailer Rewind.

13 Oct 2021The Kill Team01:04:54

To close out the series of war films, Tommy joins JJ and Steve to discuss The Kill Team. Will this finally be a war film that is about war?

The Kill Team is written and directed by Dan Krauss, who also directed the 2013 documentary The Kill Team, which is the basis for the 2019 film. JJ and Steve watched the documentary and bring their insights to the discussion. Both films tackle dark and disturbing subject matter and the gray ethical area that these films confront demand debate and discussion.

While they won’t land on answers as to what is right, just, or good, JJ, Steve, and Tommy do have an engaging discussion. Is this film for you? Within the first 15 minutes of this episode you will know whether you will push play, or keep scrolling.

21 Jul 2021The Roads Not Taken00:51:41

The Roads Not Taken is the third in a trio of films about taking care of an adult relative. JJ really struggled with it, in part due to his own experiences with similar situations. Steve, on the other hand, found his own way to make connections and sense out of it. Both agree that it’s a challenging film to watch. Writer/director Sally Potter put together a film that is very clearly a personal one. The question is whether it is intended to be oblique or if it is such a personal film that audiences aren’t expected to fully access the intent and meaning behind it.

12 May 2020The Kindergarten Teacher (2014)00:55:47

JJ and Steve finish the first half of 2020 with a film and its remake. This pairing starts with 2014's The Kindergarten Teacher from Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid. There's something different about this film. Is it an allegory? Is it a poem?

Their discussion starts with the unique cinematography. From the first scene, this film exhibits exceptional camerawork that engages and draws the viewer into the story. Throughout the story of Nira and young Yoav, we are gifted with beautifully framed sequences that mirror the story's emphasis on poetry. The Kindergarten Teacher is a visual treat.

But what about the substance of the story? Nira, the titular character, discovers a student's poetic ability that exceeds her own and puts her on a quest to ensure that his gift is not ignored. The choices she makes lead to a dark and unsettling journey. The film ends with a shot that Steve believes is less ambiguous than it may appear. Is he right, or is he reading too much into it?

22 Aug 2017Experimenter00:41:11

"Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards."

This month JJ and Steve learn a lesson in obedience with 2015’s Experimenter. Peter Sarsgaard takes us through the career of Stanley Milgram, and is accompanied by a cast of familiar and friendly faces: Winona Ryder, Anthony Edwards, Jim Gaffigan, John Leguizamo, Taryn Manning, and the late Anton Yelchin. Milgram is best known for his obedience experiments that asked people to administer increasingly painful shocks to a stranger in another room. Milgram learned that people will be obedient to an authority figure. So download this episode and push play.

Push play.

You must continue with this and push play. I will bear the responsibility. Push play . . . now.

As Joel Edgerton is starting to become a familiar face for American audiences he is also starting to cultivate his behind the screen talents. This month JJ and Steve investigate Edgerton’s feature-length screenplay - 2014’s Felony. Edgerton shares the screen with Tom Wilkinson and Jai Courtney in this character-driven police thriller. While Steve was disappointed that this wasn’t the police procedural he thought it was setting out to be, JJ enjoyed this character-focused story on the human condition. But they both agree that the performances make this one worth adding to your list.

The fact that Steve and JJ both enjoyed Michael Almereyda’s 2015 film Experimenter would lead you to believe that they would be inclined to enjoy his 2020 film TESLA. But anachronisms abound! Edison scrolling on a smartphone? Tesla karaoke? Just what is going on in this film?

Steve and JJ debate the type of film this is. Is it a narrative? Is it a documentary? Is it a docu-narrative? Does a narrator telling us that an event we see portrayed in the film is “pretty surely not how it happened” allow us to question the veracity of everything we see? Who is singing karaoke, Nikola Tesla or Ethan Hawke? They may not agree on the answers, but what they do agree on is that this is a film that takes risks, even if trips over itself, stumbles, and struggles to tell a coherent story.

"Tell me a story where everything works out in the end for the evil witch."

Steve and JJ are going to have their pain killer laden cake and spoil it for you too. This was Pete’s trailer pick from January 2, 2015. Pete talked about the cast and said Jennifer Aniston stood a chance for an Oscar for this film. Andy agreed that she looked amazing in this trailer and agreed that this looked like an opportunity for her to show that she is capable of powerful performances.

"In the end there is a 50% chance you will have your daughter back."

It’s the last Trailer Rewind of 2017, and this time it's personal. When they decided to watch Andy’s trailer pick from our Syriana episode on February 20, 2015, Steve and JJ had no idea of the impact it would have on them. Writer/director Riley Stearns has crafted a dark tale exploring loss, free will, and the decisions people make that give others power over them.

This film checks all the boxes of a small independent film: character-driven story, few locations, and an important message to share. Faults is one of those rare exceptions that has found the perfect cast. Leland Orser is one of “those guys”, a familiar face often in a small supporting role. However, here he is one of the leads carrying this film. It is his portrayal of Ansel Roth, a burned out, down on his luck, and weary cult expert that holds this film together. He is joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, as Claire, the subject of his deprogramming efforts.

It’s challenging to find an accurate adjective to describe the journey that we take with Ansel and Claire. At times Steve found some humor in it, while JJ found himself filled with anxiety. What they both agree on is that this is a film worth watching and discussing.

"There is no limit to what desperate men will do when pushed."

We call the Filmboard a gang of thugs, but we’ve got nothing on the crew from Triple 9, a violent cop drama from 2016 directed by John Hilcoat. With both the Marvel and DC cinematic universes represented as well as The Walking Dead, this film has a slew of familiar faces. We have corrupt cops working one last heist for the mafia, and needing to sacrifice one of their own to do it. From early on this films delivers on action and adrenaline, but can the story and actors deliver an appropriate finish? How many times has Woody Harrelson played a law enforcement role? Why are accents such a problem for some actors? And if the Filmboard ever needed a sacrificial lamb, would we pick JJ or Tommy?

21 May 2019The Edge of Seventeen00:47:10

"I had the worst thought: I've got to spend the rest of my life with myself."

Just as the school year is starting to wind down, JJ and Steve take one more trip back to high school with 2016’s The Edge of Seventeen. First time director Kelly Fremon Craig is at the top of the class with her original script. The theater department is also stocked with talent: Hailey Steinfeld, Haley Lu Richardson, Blake Jenner, Kyra Sedgwick, and Woody Harrelson.

Falling into solid Dramedy territory, this is not a typical teen comedy. This rewarding character piece will appeal to teen and twenty-somethings, while also delivering a smartly written story that will entertain adults.

Bonus: JJ describes his favorite camera shot from this movie with such loving detail that it almost brings him to tears just talking about it.

21 Jun 2016Mr. Nobody00:45:52

"Why am I me and not somebody else?"

Are you ready to rewind time with this month’s trailer rewind? JJ and Steve tackle Mr. Nobody, Pete’s trailer pick from November 2013. They discuss this film’s long road to a U.S release, the challenges of discussing a film loaded with metaphor and multiple storylines across different timelines, as well as the right audience for this film.

18 Jul 2017Hunt for the Wilderpeople00:41:39

“You know, sometimes in life it seems like there's no way out. Like a sheep trapped in a maze designed by wolves.“

This month, JJ and Steve are off into the deep bush country of New Zealand to track down one of Andy’s trailer picks from last year. What they find is an unexpected treasure full of beautiful camera work, lovable characters, and a variety of unexpected film references. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is one of those rare four-quadrant films that appeals to everyone. There’s action and adventure, fish-out-of-water comedy, and a great relationship story between a wanna-be gangster teen and a crotchety backcountry hunter. So gather your friends and family together to watch this overlooked gem.

29 Jan 2019Lean on Pete00:46:13

"Just gotta keep going. This isn’t our home."

A long journey with a horse . . . through brutal environments . . . and encounters with ruthless people . . . no, we’re not talking about Hostiles again. But after taking a month off we wanted to pick up where we were. So this month Steve and JJ are taking on the emotional cliff dive known as Lean on Pete.

With a cast that includes Steve Buscemi and Steve Zahn, you would think that JJ wouldn’t have to endure another brutal film that breaks your heart. But this film is not what you would expect. Steve and JJ are challenged to identify anyone they would recommend it to. Not because it is a bad film, but because it’s hard to imagine anyone you would want to willingly put as a participant in Charly’s journey to find a home.

Is it worth watching? Definitely! Does Steve learn more about the geography of the Pacific Northwest than he expected? Most definitely! Is there an unexpected connection to R. Kelly that makes JJ a bit uncomfortable? Possibly.
