The man himself, Darwin on the Trail joins me this week to discuss his upcoming film about the Arizona Trail called 'Through The Great Southwest', the relationship between music and hiking, and much more. Joseph "Sweatlines" Pecoraro completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail this past summer, but that wasn't enough for him. After about a month of resting, he set out to complete thru-hike number two for the summer; The Arizona Trail. This week I'm joined by Aaron Ibey, who is a professional photographer and thru-hiker, having hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2016. He worked for the Appalachian Mountain Club as a ridgerunner in 2018, and talks all about what that job entails, as well as some tips for taking better hiking photos on your smartphone. He ends the episode by telling an insane story from his 2016 thru-hike, where he encountered a mountain lion in the Hundred Mile Wilderness of Maine. Trail Tales has had plenty of bear stories, but never a mountain lion story!

Kimberly "Catwoman" Morse thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2018, and has also completed the Adirondack 46 High Peaks. In this episode we chat about how she took time off in the middle of her career to complete the 2,000 mile trek, our favorite and least favorite High Peaks in the Adirondacks, and how she was bit by a cat (which she eventually rescued) while at a road crossing in Pennsylvania.

Effie Drew joins Trail Tales to talk about two main topics: her thru-paddle (you read that correctly) of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, and hiking with dogs! She has done the Appalachian Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and much of the Pacific Crest Trail, and in 2018 her partner and her decided to give their legs a quick break and take to the water. They paddled the entire 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail at the end of 2018. 

Towards the end of the episode, I get the chance to pick Effie's brain on the subject of backpacking and hiking with dogs. Her dog Luna has hiked over 7,000 miles which is insanity, so she is able to give plenty of advice on how to manage your dog on the trail.

Austin Davis caught the hiking bug in 2018, completing a yo-yo hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, before heading to South America in an effort to continue his adventures. In 2019, he thru-hiked the Te Araroa in New Zealand, and the Arizona Trail. That's a ton of hiking.

Jake Pickering thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 2016, and headed back into the woods again in 2018. The second time around he thru-hiked the Great Divide Trail in Western Canada, which is a relatively unknown trail compared to more popular hikes like the Appalachian Trail and PCT. In this episode we learn about how a Wikipedia article exposed him to the world of long-distance hiking, and all about the logistics of hiking the Great Divide Trail. Since we last spoke in Episode 24 of Trail Tales, Philip Carcia has gone on to offically take the fastest known time for the White Mountain Grid. Philip hiked each of the 48 4000-foot peaks in New Hampshire's White Mountains in each month... for an entire year. To finish off the project, he completed a White Mountain Direttissima, essentially thru-hiking the 48 peaks in one shot, finishing in just under 7 days. Impressive!

In the episode, Philip reflects on the craziness that consumed the project since we had last spoken. He talks about the gnarly spring conditions he faced, how he got less than 10 hours of sleep over the course of the Direttissima, and what his life has looked a few weeks out from when he finished.

Round three with Philip Carcia, also known as Finding Philip! Wrapping up the story of his White Mountain Single Year Grid, Philip goes into detail about the role that social media played in his project, some of his highest and lowest points, and what kept him motivated on the trail, day after day after day. Philip hiked every single one of the White Mountain 4000 Footers in every single month... for an entire year! If you've hiked any of the New Hampshire 4000 Footers or anywhere else in the White Mountains, you know how difficult they are and can probably imagine the strength it took for Philip to complete this goal. He has been incredibly humble about the whole thing, and I am beyond grateful that he was willing to spend so much time talking to me and sharing his story over the last few months.

Thru-hiker and photographer Aaron Ibey joins the show again, this time to talk about his hike of New Hampshire's Cohos Trail. This relatively unknown trail runs from the New Hampshire/Canada border, 170 miles south to Crawford Notch in the White Mountains. Aaron shares all the details from his thru-hike, including his resupply strategy, the types of terrain he encountered, and the abundance of wildlife he saw. This trail really seems like a hidden gem, often overshadowed (quite literally) by the famous White Mountains that exist just to it's south.

Will Peterson thru hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2019, and after cancelling a 2020 PCT thru hike he decided to go after the White Mountains Direttissima FKT. Despite no previous experience setting FKTs, Will crushed the route and ended up setting the new unsupported FKT at 5 days, 13 hours and 5 minutes. Super awesome!

Scott Hughes recently completed a thru-hike of the Colorado Trail, and joins the show to talk all about it. 46 Climbs co-founder Kolby Ziemendorf is back on the show to talk about his recent attempt to break the record for hiking the most High Peaks in the Adirondacks in 24 hours. Unfortunately, the attempt did not work out, and we talk all about what happened. We also cover some of his preparation for taking on such a daunting hiking challenge, the record fund-raising year that 46 Climbs is having, and we even touch on how he will be thru-hiking the Northville-Placid Trail in just a few weeks. Thru-Hiking the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks with Jacob Ireland

Jacob Ireland recently completed a thru-hike of the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks, and was kind enough to reflect on his experience with me this week. I also attempted the Northville Placid Trail a few years ago, and through that experience I discovered how tough of a trail the NPT really is. Though Jacob certainly does not regret his experience on the Northville Placid Trail, he expressed his mixed feelings about it on this episode. We talk about why he felt a bit underwhelmed by the trail, and also cover the positive aspects of the Northville Placid Trail (lakes, lakes, and more lakes)! It's always a treat to talk about the Adirondacks.

Thru-hiker and peak-bagger Caet Cash has completed the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Adirondack 46, and much much more. She joins the show this week to discuss her current hiking project; tackling the South Beyond 6000 Single Year Grid. If successful, Caet will be the first hiker in history to have completed the South Beyond 6000 in a Single Year Grid. We talk all about what inspired this crazy project, how she lives the 'van life' in order to make the hiking logistics easier, and a comparison between thru-hiking and peak-bagging. The South Beyond 6000 is not as popular as famous lists like the White Mountain 4000-footers or the Adirondack 46, so hopefully this episode will inspire some folks to get outside in the Southeast!

Trevor Laher passed away while attempting a thru hike of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in March of 2020. Despite the tragic circumstances, his father Doug Laher has made it his mission to educate other hikers of the PCT and beyond about how the accident could have been prevented.
