Sophia Garber joins the podcast to tell the story of her 2020 Northville Placid Trail thru hike in the Adirondacks. She hiked it very shortly after Flossy and I did, and despite the similar time-frame... her hike sounded way more fun! So if you thought my NPT story was kind of a downer, give Sophia's a listen and hopefully you will get a different perspective on the trail! Philip Werner is the creator behind SectionHiker.com, one of the first and most popular backpacking blogs on the internet. His website has been an important source of information to me since I first began hiking, so I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to chat with him. Darwin's YouTube channel is one of the most well known hiking channels and he has inspired countless numbers of people to get outside and hit the trail. At the end of the episode he tells one of the craziest stories I've heard on Trail Tales, and it's one that he hasn't really opened up about in his videos. Darwin is the man! 12 Feb 2019 | #16 | A Mountain Lion Encounter in Maine, Being a Ridgerunner on the Appalachian Trail, and Hiking Photography with Aaron Ibey | 01:11:35
This week I'm joined by Aaron Ibey, who is a professional photographer and thru-hiker, having hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2016. He worked for the Appalachian Mountain Club as a ridgerunner in 2018, and talks all about what that job entails, as well as some tips for taking better hiking photos on your smartphone. He ends the episode by telling an insane story from his 2016 thru-hike, where he encountered a mountain lion in the Hundred Mile Wilderness of Maine. Trail Tales has had plenty of bear stories, but never a mountain lion story! 19 Feb 2019 | #17 | What Does Hiker Trash Mean? Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and Skateboarding the Florida Trail with Alex Fogt | 01:02:26
Alex Fogt had a crazy 2018, thru-hiking not only the Pacific Crest Trail, but the Florida Trail as well. We talk about how this skate-rat brought a board with him on his Florida Trail thru-hike and skated hundreds of the paved miles on the FLT. We also talk about his best and worst experiences on both trails, and attempt to define what the popular term "hiker trash" actually means. Like what you hear? Want to talk some smack? The one and only Jennifer Mabus, also known as The Whimsical Woman joins the show to talk about her thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. Seemingly on a whim, she set out to make the walk from Mexico to Canada in 2018. We talk about why her vlog was so successful, the post-trail adjustment period that we both went through after our hikes, and the craziness that ensued when she was stalked by a mountain lion. 05 Mar 2019 | #19 | Ranking The States on the Appalachian Trail with Mikey "Mullet" Brenkus | 01:17:26
This week thru-hiker Mikey Brenkus, our guest all the way back from episode four, joins the show to talk about his ranking of the states on the Appalachian Trail. We go through our ranks one-by-one, and discuss why we ranked each state the way we did. Our standard for the rankings was very loose, arbitrarily factoring in difficulty, scenery, and our experiences in each state. Is Pennsylvania really as bad as people say it is? 22 May 2019 | #29 | Hiking with Dogs and Thru-Padding the Northern Forest Canoe Trail with Effie Drew | 01:15:18
Effie Drew joins Trail Tales to talk about two main topics: her thru-paddle (you read that correctly) of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, and hiking with dogs! She has done the Appalachian Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and much of the Pacific Crest Trail, and in 2018 her partner and her decided to give their legs a quick break and take to the water. They paddled the entire 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail at the end of 2018. Towards the end of the episode, I get the chance to pick Effie's brain on the subject of backpacking and hiking with dogs. Her dog Luna has hiked over 7,000 miles which is insanity, so she is able to give plenty of advice on how to manage your dog on the trail. 29 May 2019 | #30 | Mexico to Canada... and Back to Mexico? A PCT Yo-Yo, and Much More with Austin Davis | 01:04:33
Austin Davis caught the hiking bug in 2018, completing a yo-yo hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, before heading to South America in an effort to continue his adventures. In 2019, he thru-hiked the Te Araroa in New Zealand, and the Arizona Trail. That's a ton of hiking. In our chat, we talk in depth about his PCT yo-yo, water sources on the Arizona Trail (which still disgust me), and do an info-session on the Te Araroa. We jump around a ton in this episode, covering topics such as the White Mountains (and how they shape up against the Adirondacks), winter hiking/camping, and how Shawn's philosophy has changed over the years concerning ultralight backpacking. 26 Jun 2019 | #33 | Evacuated by a Helicopter on the Great Divide Trail with Jake Pickering | 01:17:25
Jake Pickering thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 2016, and headed back into the woods again in 2018. The second time around he thru-hiked the Great Divide Trail in Western Canada, which is a relatively unknown trail compared to more popular hikes like the Appalachian Trail and PCT. In this episode we learn about how a Wikipedia article exposed him to the world of long-distance hiking, and all about the logistics of hiking the Great Divide Trail. Make sure you stay tuned until the end of the episode to hear his crazy story about being evacuated from the GDT by helicopter, a good reminder for everyone to renew their SPOT subscriptions! 03 Jul 2019 | #34 | A Triple Crowner on the Continental Divide Trail and More with Dave Moore | 01:12:39
Growing up within reach of the White Mountains, Dave Moore was exposed to the world of hiking and backpacking from a young age, and eventually went on to complete the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail! But not only is he a Triple Crowner, he has hiked many other smaller trails as well! For this episode, we focus mostly on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) as I pick Dave's brain about some of the challenges that thru-hikers face on the CDT that they may not encounter on the PCT or the AT. 10 Jul 2019 | #35 | Two Appalachian Trail Thru-Hikers Talk About Their Backpacking and Hiking Trail Grievances | 01:29:49
Baker Bokorney is back for round 3! Baker is an experienced thru-hiker, having hiked the Appalachian Trail, Florida Trail, and half the Arizona Trail in 2018. We decided to have some fun with this episode, and go over our hiking and backpacking grievances. Towards the end, Baker gets into some grievances specific to Trail Tales (in addition to being the most frequent guest, he is also a listener of the show), and I finally give him a chance to share a trail story! 17 Jul 2019 | #36 | Peak Bagging the Catskills 3500-Footers, and John Muir Trail Permits and Preparation with Nick Scaramuzzo | 01:09:47
Nick Scaramuzzo is a seasoned Northeast hiker, having peak-bagged in Vermont, the Adirondacks, and the Catskills, just to name a few places. In our chat we discuss the Catskills 3500-footer club and how the "rules" of the hiking list vary slightly from the more popular Adirondack 46 and White Mountain 48. We also talk about his upcoming thru-hike of the John Muir Trail, and some of his preparation for that, including how he navigated the tricky permit system in order to make his hike happen. 24 Jul 2019 | #37 | Completing the White Mountain Grid in Record Time with Philip Carcia | 01:11:52
Since we last spoke in Episode 24 of Trail Tales, Philip Carcia has gone on to offically take the fastest known time for the White Mountain Grid. Philip hiked each of the 48 4000-foot peaks in New Hampshire's White Mountains in each month... for an entire year. To finish off the project, he completed a White Mountain Direttissima, essentially thru-hiking the 48 peaks in one shot, finishing in just under 7 days. Impressive! In the episode, Philip reflects on the craziness that consumed the project since we had last spoken. He talks about the gnarly spring conditions he faced, how he got less than 10 hours of sleep over the course of the Direttissima, and what his life has looked a few weeks out from when he finished. 31 Jul 2019 | #38 | 576 White Mountain 4000 Footers in Record Time with Philip Carcia (Finding Philip) | 01:07:18
Round three with Philip Carcia, also known as Finding Philip! Wrapping up the story of his White Mountain Single Year Grid, Philip goes into detail about the role that social media played in his project, some of his highest and lowest points, and what kept him motivated on the trail, day after day after day. Philip hiked every single one of the White Mountain 4000 Footers in every single month... for an entire year! If you've hiked any of the New Hampshire 4000 Footers or anywhere else in the White Mountains, you know how difficult they are and can probably imagine the strength it took for Philip to complete this goal. He has been incredibly humble about the whole thing, and I am beyond grateful that he was willing to spend so much time talking to me and sharing his story over the last few months. 07 Aug 2019 | #39 | All About Thru-Hiking New Hampshire's Cohos Trail with Aaron Ibey | 01:11:23
Thru-hiker and photographer Aaron Ibey joins the show again, this time to talk about his hike of New Hampshire's Cohos Trail. This relatively unknown trail runs from the New Hampshire/Canada border, 170 miles south to Crawford Notch in the White Mountains. Aaron shares all the details from his thru-hike, including his resupply strategy, the types of terrain he encountered, and the abundance of wildlife he saw. 21 Aug 2019 | #41 | Thru-Hiking the Colorado Trail with Scott Hughes | 01:09:03
Scott Hughes recently completed a thru-hike of the Colorado Trail, and joins the show to talk all about it. We cover all the essential information that someone contemplating thru-hiking the Colorado Trail needs to know, including resupply, weather, camping, and much more. Also, you can apparently thru-BIKE this trail as well as thru-hike it. You read that correctly. How sick is that! This was Scott's second episode of Trail Tales, as we did an episode way back in November of 2018 about his thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. I am grateful that he was willing to come back on, and share all about his experience thru-hiking the Colorado Trail! 28 Aug 2019 | #42 | A Record Attempt in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks with 46 Climbs Co-Founder Kolby Ziemendorf | 01:08:33
46 Climbs co-founder Kolby Ziemendorf is back on the show to talk about his recent attempt to break the record for hiking the most High Peaks in the Adirondacks in 24 hours. Unfortunately, the attempt did not work out, and we talk all about what happened. We also cover some of his preparation for taking on such a daunting hiking challenge, the record fund-raising year that 46 Climbs is having, and we even touch on how he will be thru-hiking the Northville-Placid Trail in just a few weeks. Kolby has hiked all 46 of the Adirondack High Peaks, and has intimate knowledge of the Adirondacks. It's always a pleasure to chat with him, and I am sure he will come back on in the future! 04 Sep 2019 | #43 | Thru-Hiking the PCT and Starting the Byland Podcast with Pacific Crest Trail Thru-Hiker Emory Wanger | 01:22:25
Emory Wanger, who hosts the Byland Podcast, joins the show this week to talk about thru hiking the PCT, backpack-hunting, and of course... podcasting! We jumped all around in this one, and it was almost therapeutic for me to discuss the behind the scenes details of starting and maintaining a podcast within the hiking/backpacking/thru hiking world that we both exist in. Of course, it was also great to hear about thru-hiking the PCT, and everything else Emory had to say! Should Mount Tecumseh Be Included in the White Mountain 4000 Footers List? Peak-Bagging the New Hamphsire 4000 Footers with Mac Cerullo Journalist and peak-bagger Mac Cerullo joins the show to talk about writing for Outside Magazine about Philip Carcia's White Mountain Single Year Grid, and about his own quest to hike the New Hampshire 4000 Footers. We discuss many topics about the Whites, ranging from some of the areas we would like to hike in the WMNF that are not part of the 4000 footers list, some of the overrated New Hampshire 4000 footers, and about the controversy surrounding the fate of Mount Tecumseh and other peaks, since they have been proven to be under 4000 feet. 25 Sep 2019 | #45 | Thru-Hiking the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks with Jacob Ireland | 01:13:10
Thru-Hiking the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks with Jacob Ireland Jacob Ireland recently completed a thru-hike of the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks, and was kind enough to reflect on his experience with me this week. I also attempted the Northville Placid Trail a few years ago, and through that experience I discovered how tough of a trail the NPT really is. Though Jacob certainly does not regret his experience on the Northville Placid Trail, he expressed his mixed feelings about it on this episode. We talk about why he felt a bit underwhelmed by the trail, and also cover the positive aspects of the Northville Placid Trail (lakes, lakes, and more lakes)! It's always a treat to talk about the Adirondacks. Like what you hear? Want to talk some smack? 02 Oct 2019 | #46 | How to Take Awesome Photos While Hiking with Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker Matt Morelli | 01:08:18
Everybody is trying to step up their Instagram game these days (or at least I am), so I'm stoked I got to talk to Appalachian Trail thru-hiker and photographer Matt Morelli about the process behind his photos. After thru-hikng the AT, Matt realized his potential with camera, and decided to pursue it more seriously. We talk all about how you can step up your photography game while thru-hiking or on the trail -with both a camera or just a smart phone. Like what you hear? Want to talk some smack? 09 Oct 2019 | #47 | Sintax77 On the Adirondacks, Hammock Camping, and Much More | 01:12:22
Sintax77 On the Adirondacks, Hammock Camping, and Much More Sintax77 (aka Shawn Crawford) is back for round two this week! Much like our first episode, we jumped all over the place in our conversation, mostly focusing on his latest film 'Military Surplus Camping - B-47 Crash Site - Adirondack Mountains', as well as talk about some of his hikes in the White Mountains and of course... hammock camping! In the ever-growing pool of hiking Youtubers, Sintax77's videos continue to stand out to me due to his creative ideas and drive to push his abilities when it comes to film-making. I always have a blast talking about the White Mountains and Adirondacks, and I hope Sintax77 will come back on soon! Like what you hear? Want to talk some smack? 16 Oct 2019 | #48 | A Single Year Grid of the South Beyond 6000; Peak-Bagging with Caet Cash | 01:08:15
Thru-hiker and peak-bagger Caet Cash has completed the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Adirondack 46, and much much more. She joins the show this week to discuss her current hiking project; tackling the South Beyond 6000 Single Year Grid. If successful, Caet will be the first hiker in history to have completed the South Beyond 6000 in a Single Year Grid. We talk all about what inspired this crazy project, how she lives the 'van life' in order to make the hiking logistics easier, and a comparison between thru-hiking and peak-bagging. The South Beyond 6000 is not as popular as famous lists like the White Mountain 4000-footers or the Adirondack 46, so hopefully this episode will inspire some folks to get outside in the Southeast! 20 Nov 2018 | #5 | Another Sketchy Bear Encounter, Going Stoveless, and Southbound vs Northbound with Scott Hughes | 01:06:24
Scott Hughes is fresh off of a south-bound thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, and answers the obvious question I had for him: why did he decide to hike the trail in the wrong direction? We discuss the differences between a northbound and southbound Appalachian Trail thru-hike, his decision to leave the stove at home and eat cold food for the entire 2200 mile trek, and a sketchy bear encounter he had in Shenandoah National Park. 04 Dec 2019 | #55 | Yoga While Hiking in the White Mountains and Beyond with Nancy Wind | 01:07:23
Nancy Wind, founder of Peaks and Poses, joins the show to talk about the Whites, doing yoga in the mountains, and the spirituality of hiking! We have a great discussion about our differences on that last topics, and it made me think a little bit more about why I'm so obsessed with hiking. I also learned some stuff about yoga too! https://www.peaksandposes.com/ Check out my YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/kylehateshiking While you're at it, Check out the show's website at trailtalespod.com Like what you hear? 21 Apr 2021 | #111 | How do Thru Hiking Movies compare to Reality? With Rose Turner | 01:01:36
In this episode, Trail Tales editor and badass hiker Rose "Comics" Turner is back on the show, this time to discuss thru-hiking movies! We talk about the movies "A Walk in the Woods", "Wild", and a few more. I have not seen any of these movies, but Rose has, and I make some assumptions about them as we compare the way they portray thru hiking to the reality of thru hiking. 09 Nov 2023 | The INSANE Consequences for a Mistake in a National Park | Confronting Eric Hanson | 01:07:53
Eric Hanson was nearly thrown in JAIL for committing a crime in Grand Canyon National Park. What was his crime, you ask? Camping out of bounds. Yes, you read that correctly; the federal government tried to make an example out of him and get him locked up, simply because he is a public figure on TV and on YouTube. In this episode he explains the FULL STORY of what happened. Eric Hanson has his own YouTube channel and, until recently, was the host of the TV show Epic Trails and the YouTube channel BackpackingTV.
