07 Oct 2024 | WE TALK TRADE TOOLS - UPGRADE and SAVE TIME (& Earn More Money) | 01:12:01
082 | WE TALK TRADE TOOLS - UPGRADE and SAVE TIME (& Earn More Money) The Master and the Apprentice. In this week's episode of the Trade Legends Podcast we sit down with Chris and Gavin; 2 seasoned trade carpenters with over 50 years of joined experience in the Construction trade Industry. Chris, who trained up Gavin for the first 2 years of his carpentry apprenticeship, first qualified as a trade carpenter back in 1990 when trade tools were very different. Straight away, he set up his carpentry business "Chris Lowe Carpentry" before voyaging out into the great unknown world of carpentry. Some of his early jobs included kitchen fitting, general carpentry, exhibitions, shop fitting, and even working for the MOD doing their carpentry. Chris wanted to gain as much carpentry experience as he could, as he knew this would give him the best chance of becoming the respected and accomplished tradesman he knew he could be, and grow his business in the construction trade. But every Master needs an Apprentice... Gavin, like many others we've spoken to on the trade legends podcast, struggled at school. Rather than go on to A Levels, he decided to enrol onto a computer course, believing this was a field that would interest him. Oh how wrong he was. Upon completing the course, he changed direction completely and took up a carpentry apprenticeship to get into the construction trade, recalling his enjoyment for Design and Technology at school. Gavin was paired up with Chris almost immediately, where he would work side-by-side in the trade with him over the next 2 years. They would, however, part ways before Gavin's carpentry apprenticeship was completed. "Why?" I hear you ask... Well, you'll have to tune in! Chris and Gavin continue to work closely together, sharing ideas and tips regarding carpentry, jobs, trade tools, costs, tool theft, and pricing. Social Media is a vital tool in the fight to stay relevant, and Gavin has worked closely with Chris in teaching him the importance of Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube. Chris is aware that at this stage in his life, it is vital that he stays up to date with the carpentry trade and construction industry. Too many people in his situation refuse to move with the times especially when it comes to trade tools - a mindset that often leaves them behind. The world of construction is continuously evolving, and it is vital that tradespeople don't get left behind. #construction #tools #apprentice

21 Jan 2024 | ROGUE TRADERS, Why I Quit ITV | Trade Legends PODCAST | 048 | 00:42:40
ROGUE TRADERS! What REALLY goes on on ITV SHOWS Rogue Traders is a classic British TV Show about the construction trades and aimed at catching out unscrupulous tradesmen, with many other shows created due to its huge popularity however when the producers of ITV show "House of Horrors" made a shocking decision, Roger Bisby knew it was time to leave. Trying to make out they had a "Rogue traders" type situation with a plumber. Roger Bisby @SkillBuilder left school without qualifications but pursued a plumbing apprenticeship. Taking a break during the "summer of love" with little money, he resumed plumbing upon his return. Roger transitioned into writing for DIY magazines and later ventured into radio and TV, including LBC radio and ITV. Unhappy with how tradesmen were portrayed on House of Horrors and rogue traders style shows, he left and started a successful YouTube channel with a substantial following. Dan, on the other hand, has been a carpenter for nearly three decades, starting his carpentry apprenticeship after working with his dad on weekends. Over the years, he worked for various companies and met Roger while advertising his carpenter's square in a magazine. Collaborating, they explored effective marketing strategies for the square. My Non-Hodgkin lymphoma battle as a PLUMBER.In the UK, the lifetime risk of developing cancer is approximately 1 in 2, according to Cancer Research UK.Nathan is a young plumber in the construction industry, and in early 2024 he noticed a little pain in his lower back. He thought little of it, as every tradesman in the construction industry gets a bad back from time to time. The pain failed to subside, and after many weeks of debilitating pain and endless doctors appointments, Nathan finally discovered what was causing him so much discomfort. He was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (a cancer of the blood) and Nathan now knew that he had a real battle on his hands. He would have to stop working as a plumber, undergo 6 months of chemotherapy, and finally undergo an intense course of radiotherapy to destroy the tumours that had built up on his spine.Nathan now wants to educate people in the trades on a topic that he himself knew nothing about. Liam's upbringing was steeped in hard work and perseverance. His father's occupation as a black cab driver and his mother's role as a personal assistant instilled in him the values of diligence and resourcefulness. Starting as an apprentice for an electrician, Liam swiftly realised the absence of comfortable workwear in his field. This realisation became the catalyst for his entrepreneurial journey. Recognising the need for better attire that could withstand the demands of labor while prioritising comfort, he took the leap to create Comodo Workwear. Drawing from his experiences and fuelled by his determination, Liam ventured into the world of apparel, carving a niche by catering to the practical needs of workers like himself who craved functionality without sacrificing comfort. His dedication to providing quality workwear stemmed from a genuine understanding of the challenges faced by labourers, and it transformed him into an innovator in the industry, reshaping the way people approached their work attire. Georgina's journey unfolded against the backdrop of a family deeply rooted in a legacy of hard work. Excelling in academics, she pursued a drama degree after her schooling, drawn to the art of storytelling and teaching. However, her family's association with Rolls Royce opened unexpected doors. Joining the events management department, she discovered a different avenue—a world where precision and grandeur intersected. Transitioning to JCB introduced her to the dynamic realm of construction. 29 Sep 2024 | HOW TO GET INTO PLUMBING & becoming my own APPRENTICE | 081 | 00:57:52
HOW TO GET INTO PLUMBING & becoming my own APPRENTICE Like most young people, Dave @boilerstobathrooms6267 had no idea what he wanted to do as a Career or hat to be an apprentice in. Luckily for him, his mother was prepared for such a situation - "Plumbing David, it pays well!"...so a plumbing apprentiship it was. It wasn't, however, as simple as that, plumbing it was. Dave struggled to find a plumbing Apprenticeship in the local area; something that he would require in order to become a fully qualified Plumber and Gas Engineer in the construction trade. "Well..." David thought, "Perhaps I could become my own Apprentice." Now, that might sound like something thought up during a drunken stupor, however it was exactly what Dave would go on do. He set up his own plumbing company, and employed himself to be his own plumbing Apprentice. Once he had his portfolio signed off, he would go on to complete his studies and become a fully qualified Plumber and Gas Engineer in the plumbing trade. But this was just the start of an eventful journey for Dave. Over the next few years, he would experience the horrors of Social Housing, the challenges of on-call work, angry and aggressive customers, and the importance of managing your finances. Yet somehow, with all this going on around him, Dave was able to create a piece of plumbing literature which would revolutionise the lives of so many Tradespeople from plumbers to electricians. "What piece of Literature?" I hear you ask. The aptly named... 'Breakdown Bible.' A Must for plumbers!
