Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast with Rob Woodhouse - LA Olympic Swimming Medallist and Sports Agent
I was delighted to welcome to the podcast LA Olympic Bronze Medallist and Sports Manager to the likes of Adam Peatty and his niece Emma McKeon, to name a few, all round nice guy - Rob Woodhouse.
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia and now based in Glasgow, Scotland, we discussed Rob's swimming journey from early days in a small 4 lane indoor 25m pool in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, to the heights of a bronze medal in the 400 IM at the '84 LA Games and now to his work as a Sports Manager at TLA and his commentary work at world swim meets. His journey took him through the Australian Institute of Sport in its heyday, and we chatted about the infamous training sets of those early 80's.
Swimming has been Rob's life, first as someone who reached great heights in his career, to now helping today's athletes with their own swimming journeys.
If you are a swim geek like me, you will love this pod chat down memory lane.

Today's podcast guest is superb masters pool and open water swimmer - New South Welshman Aaron Cleland.
We chatted extensively about Aaron's passion for masters swimming and his commitment to furthering involvement and encouragement for those finding our wonderful community in their adult life. Part of the reason Aaron swims is to inspire and role model fitness and dedication to a goal for his children, and the junior swimmers he trains with as well. I love this altruistic approach and his passion in speaking about these topics comes through very strongly.
If you want to know how to successfully fit in training, work and family life then this pod is a must to listen too.

Sharing his story with us on today's podcast, is US swimmer James Fike, who is swimming lifetime personal best times, faster than he did in College as an 18yr old.
How is James doing that? What has he changed? And where can we get some of that magic, fountain of youth elixir? All is revealed, as James shares his strategies and training in depth with us.
Not only is James hitting goals in the pool, he is also Founder and CEO of Fike Swim, which started when he invented "The Brick". It was fascinating to hear how James overcame obstacles to get his "brick made".
I am sure you will enjoy hearing from James and will gain many insights to take away and implement in your own swimming.

On today's podcast we chat to the open water marathon swimmer - Craig Lewin. Known as "The Salty Swimmer" not only does Craig coach swimmers to succeed in marathon swims, he has completed the Triple Crown himself, starting with Catalina, on to Manhattan and finishing with the English Channel, to round out the triple.
We chatted about how he prepared for those swims; the type of training needed and the obstacles he encountered and overcame to achieve these feats. We also spoke about critical speed training for endurance swimming. It is something many think they would not need to include, but Craig outlines why it is so important.
There are many great takeaways here for all masters swimmers, especially if you are considering an open water marathon swim.

Today's podcast guest is Canadian Olympic swimmer and Masters Swimmer - Tim Bach.
We chatted about Tim's swim journey from a young age in Canada as one of eight children, to making the Canadian Olympic Team in 1972 and what is what like to compete as a 19yr old in those games.
Many years later, Tim found himself in Australia via his work as a University lecturer and rediscovered swimming through Masters, which he has a long association with. We chatted about swimming masters in Melbourne, then on to Ballarat and Daylesford in regional Victoria, where he is advocating for an indoor heated to service the Hepburn Shire.
While he waits for that to take shape, you will often find him in Lake Daylesford, taking no heed to the old wives tale about the old gold mines sucking people down under water.
A great chat with a humble guy with many take aways for pool and open water masters swimmers. Listen in now!

Today's podcast guest is Californian resident, US Masters swimmer and Professor of Sociology - Lynn Fahey.
Lynn is a vibrant and fun loving gal, who has re-discovered her love for swimming, after being out of the water for 10 years. Like many masters swimmers, she travels a lot for her work, and shared with us the ways she adapts her training, whether that be in a hotel pool or a local ymca, to fit everything in. When in LA, she trains with a local masters team when she can, but many of her workouts are squeezed into lunch hours.
We chatted about how Lynn stays motivated to train by herself; what kinds of sessions she completes and how often. This is really interesting information and insight for all those masters swimmers out there who don't have a masters team close by that they can swim with or are struggling to fit swims in around work hours and family. It can be done! and Lynn shares her secrets with us.

On today's podcast we are joined by FINA World Champ and US Masters swimmer - Britta O'Leary.
Britta squeezes a lot into her week and comes out trumps in all her endeavours. What with young children, work and family life, as well as a tenure on the USMS Board, she still manages to get in her swim training and finds time to race. Very successfully I might add, as evident from several number 1 rankings in the recently released FINA World Masters Top Ten
How does she do it? What is her secret and what can we learn from Britta's training and racing? How often does she train and what type of workouts does she complete? All this and more on today's podcast.

Everyone knows about pre-activation before getting in the water to swim, but how many of us do it?
Well listen into today's podcast chat with Masters Swimmer and Myotherapist - Kerri Layton, and you may change your mind and find time in your schedule to include it!
We covered a lot about swimmers injuries and how to manage them in our chat, as well as how to continue to train when those types of injuries are present. Pre-activation is certainly part of it, along with deep tissue massage and engaging the small muscles of the shoulder rotator cuff.
A really informative pod episode that I am sure you will enjoy!

Today I welcomed a past student of mine from Firbank Grammar to the microphone - Rachel Goh. From that little Year 7 girl, she became a world class swimmer representing Australia on the FINA World Cup Circuit and at two FINA World SC Champs. She has 35 world level medals to her name and is a 2 x NCAA national 100 Backstroke champion. She is an Auburn University Alum and now respected clinical psychologist.
As you can see, we had a lot to chat about. Rachel gave so much insight into her time as a swimmer and spoke so eloquently about resilience, hard work and overcoming adversity. We also chatted about psychological tools we can use in our swimming, as well as some killer Auburn sets you may want to try.
I absolutely adored this chat and I am sure you will too!
On today's podcast, I sat down and chatted with Canadian Masters swimmer - Dr Lynn Marshall.
Lynn is an inspirational swimmer, whose swimming journey has taken her through multiple FINA WR swims, induction into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame, and most notably, an amazing recovery from a terrifying cycling accident, and a return to top level masters swimming after recovery from those injuries.
We talked about all these things, plus Lynn's amazing training schedule, and what she finds works for her with preparation for racing.
Lynn is a very humble and eloquent lady and I think you will find her swimming journey a great listen.

Today's podcast guest is 2016 Olympic Gold Medallist and recent FINA Masters WR holder, US Olympian Ryan Held from the New York Athletic Club.
We talked about Ryan's swim in the 4x100m free relay to win gold in Rio '16 and how he ended up swimming that third leg in the final, with Michael Phelps, Nathan Adrian and Caleb Dressel as team mates. We also discussed the recent 2022 US Nationals and Ryan's 100m freestyle race that got him back onto that US Team for the upcoming World Championships..
In between those two bookends, Ryan experienced a few set backs, that might have made other swimmers throw in the towel, so to speak. But his quiet determination, hard work and humility ensured Ryan came back to form at just the right time. Not to say that there weren't highlights in that time, namely breaking the US 100m National Freestyle record in 2019 and in 2021 breaking the 25-29 yrs FINA Masters WR in the 50m free.
Ryan's stories around all these events are just pretty terrific. I love the fact he is a huge fan of masters swimming and he sees himself doing more masters meets when he retires from professional swimming. Not yet though! he has plenty more goals to reach leading into Paris 2024.
Ryan is certainly a swimmer to watch and a joy to have on the podcast. You will love this chat.

Have you ever contemplated doing a marathon swim? Like The Rottnest Channel Swim, or even something longer like the Derwent River Swim? Well Andrew Donaldson has completed both, as well as several others, and on this podcast he shares with us everything to consider when doing a marathon swim. Andrew graciously shared all his knowledge, about what type of training he does and his preparation, both before and during the swim.
And what happens when you put in all that preparation and something doesn't go to plan? We discuss how Andrew dealt with that as well, during his recent Ausbil Swim, from Palm Beach to Shelley Beach along the NSW coast
We also chatted about Andrew's passion project which he co-founded called "Swimclan" which is a starting point for swimmers interested in marathon swimming, but not sure where to begin!
You will love hearing about Andrew's swim journey and I am sure you will gain many insights from his experiences and advice. Enjoy!

It takes a lot of determination and hard work to swim at the Olympics, when you don't have a 50m pool to train in!
That's just part of the story for Angelika Ouedraogo from Burkina Faso in West Africa, who has represented her country at 3 x Olympic Games and now studies and swim masters in the US.
We chatted about all this and much more in this episode. I loved hearing about Angelika's outlook on masters swimming and the joy she has in racing and continuing to look for ways to improve.

Can yoga help your swimming? In this podcast episode, US Masters Champion Trina Schaetz chatted about that very question from her perspective as a yoga instructor, as well as discussing everything else that makes up her training week.
We discussed what it is like training in one of the mecca's of masters swimming, California and how Trina made her way through Covid, finding ways to keep doing the thing she loves - swimming!
I loved Trina's positivity and vitality and her willingness to share what she does so openly. I am sure you will love hearing about her swimming journey.
In 2000, Chris Fydler was a winning member of one of the most memorable Olympic men's 4 x 100m freestyle relay races in swimming history. 22 years later he has just become a master's WR holder in the 50m freestyle sprint (50-54) and the men's 4 x 50m freestyle relay 200+.
What motivates a swimmer of Chris' statue to continue swimming and racing all these years later? Has his training changed over the years and what is his secret to swimming so fast?
Quite simply, he just loves the water and swimming with mates. Now there is a recipe for relay success!
Give this podcast with Chris a listen and find out why he says that in training for sprinting, "less is more".

It is certainly something I would like to try and I found out all about it from our guest today - US masters swimmer and FINA WR holder Katie Glenn.
Katie lives, swims and coaches at high altitude in the fairytale town of Vail, Colorado with the Off Piste Aquatics Masters Team. Outdoors, all year round, in a glorious heated pool amongst snow capped mountains.
What are the effects and benefits in training so far above sea level, and what happens when you come down to low or no altitude. Katie shared her knowledge and experience, as well as her coaching ideas and what she does in her own training.
It is always lovely to meet a fellow kindred swimmer and that was no exception with Katie. I am sure you will love hearing all about her swim journey through College, and onto the US National team and now as a masters swimmer.

Masters swimming means so much too many thousands of swimmers around the world and today's guest Graham Croft from Western Australia is no exception. And he is pretty successful at it as well.
With over 40 years of competitive racing, FINA WR's and Australian Surf Lifesaving titles, Graham has the energy and drive to continue challenging himself and strive for new goals. He is already looking forward to age-ing up, as we say in masters circles, next year to give a red hot go at a whole new raft of records.
I loved what Graham had to say about swimming the 200 and 400 freestyle. Some great advice for all in this chat.

How many of us "lean in" to the pre race nerves we feel before racing? Do you shy away from those feelings or embrace them and use them to your advantage? And shouldn't those nerves be absent in masters swimming, because we are just challenging ourself? Well it turns out that can make us nervous too!
US Masters swimmer Brian Bergford is my guest on Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast today and gives us very in depth answers to these very questions. In his day job, Brian is a performance psychology coach and he applies all his learning to his own swimming as well as many other athletes. What can we learn from that for our own masters swimming?
Brian is a passionate masters swimmer, who discovered swimming as an adult, and who strives for excellence and personal betterment in both training and racing. How does he do that?

How can you swim a super fast 1500m race, whether that be in the pool or in the open water? And what should you be doing at training to increase your chances of posting that fast race? US Masters Swimmer Kelly Palace, shares all this and more in this episode of Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast
Not only is Kelly a FINA #1 ranked swimmer in long distance events, she also hosts the successful Champion's Mojo Podcast where she talks to champions about their "mojo"! It was delightful speaking to another female podcaster and discovering what inspired her to start the podcast and hear about the lessons she has learned from interviewing champions over the 165 episodes she has produced.
It is always exciting to chat to a fellow swimming tragic and I absolutely loved hearing about the nitty gritty of Kelly's training, coaching and life in one of the mecca's of masters swimming, Florida.
Oh, and Kelly gives us some great advice about overcoming a swimmer's shoulder injury. So much valuable information here for every masters swimmer.
Swimming entrepreneur and masters swimmer champion Rob Kent joins us in this episode of Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast
Hailing from Toronto Canada, we had a long ranging chat about Rob's swimming, first as a Canadian National Swimmer, his epic open water swim races as a masters swimmer and the training he does in the pool. Lay over that, his founding of the L.O.S.T. swimming group, which sparked him to start the Global Swim Series and due to Covid, has now pivoted into the inaugural Race the Legends camp and race later in the year. And as a little side project, he was General Manager of the Toronto Titans ISL Team.
This guy loves swimming! In the ocean, in lakes and in the pool. Rob's passion for H2O comes through in each word he speaks, and I love that he has the same passion for promoting participation in open water swims as he does for the elite swimmers in the pool at ISL.
Listen in to this great chat with this legend of swimming. You will definitely take something away to help with your own swim journey.
Can we learn from elite and professional swimmers in our sport? I believe we can! And today's guest on Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast shares many insights from that very vantage point.
As Janelle Elford, she shared in the dominance of Australian middle distance freestyler's of the late 80's and early 90's, culminating in a gold, silver and bronze medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. As Janelle Pallister, she coaches alongside Michael Bohl on the Gold Coast working with the high performance swimmers from Griffith University - the likes of Emma McKeon, Kaylee McKeown and Mack Horton to name a few - and is currently on the Swimming Australia coaching team in Birmingham for these Commonwealth Games. She is also mother and coach of up and coming Australian swimmer Lani Pallister, who scored a bronze in the 1500m in Budapest last month.
So as you can see, Janelle has a truckload of experience to share with us from a swimming and coaching point of view. She is humble, down to earth and I have a feeling the swimmers she works with admire her perspective.
While everyone is feeling inspired by the wonderful swimmers hitting it out of the ball park at the Commonwealth Games, let's hear from a masters swimmer from the Commonwealth - British masters swimmer and world record holder - Amanda Heath.
Amanda was so generous in sharing her insights into her training and racing, and the strategies she employs - both physically and mentally - are so very useful for all swimmers to hear and implement into your own training. Amanda specialises in races 200 and above, and has her WR in breaststroke and individual medley.
Anyone one up for Amanda's favourite set of 5 x 400 IM at training today? Have a listen into this episode of Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast while we discuss this and lots more about masters swimming in the UK.
Today on Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast I am joined by Nick Hope who is a champion British Masters Swimmer and a renowned Sports Journalist. It was so enjoyable chatting to him, while he shared his unique perspective from both angles.
How does a successful freelance journalist, who follows the big sporting events round the globe - think Olympics, Paralympics and World Championships - fit his own masters swimming training into that schedule? Where and how does he train and what is the secret to his success?
Juxtapose onto that story, the wonderful experiences he can share from pool deck in his interviews with many champions of swimming from around the world, and I think you will find many gems of advice in Nick's discussion on this episode of Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast
Harriet Brown is a World Champion Iron-woman and 2 x winner of the NutriGrain Iron-woman Series and she shares with us how she ocean swims, surf kayaks, board paddles and beach sprints her way to success across all four disciplines on this episode of Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast You won't want to miss it!
It takes many sessions in the pool, ocean and gym each week, training with hard work and dedication to bring this Iron-woman dream together. As Harriet says "Train really hard and push your body to the limit. If you’re making the commitment to train, you may as well do your absolute best". And Harriet certainly exemplifies this with every word she speaks about her swimming and surf journey.
And for all those ocean swimmers out there, Harriet shares with us her top tips to completing an ocean race successfully. And she should know, being a 6 x winner of the iconic Lorne Pier to Pub Swim.
From dual Olympic medallist and World Champion, through to one of her current roles as Ambassador of Mental Health for the Queensland government, Australian triple Olympian Hayley Lewis-Taylor candidly shared all the ups and downs she has experienced, conquered and triumphed over in her swimming career on today's Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast
How did she handle the pressure that came with being one of Swimming Australia's most successful athletes of the 90's? What has she learnt from those fundamental lessons experienced at the pool? And why has she found herself back in the pool after many years of self imposed exile?
It was such a delight chatting to Hayley and hearing her candidly share her swimming journey.

Masters Swimming is exploding in popularity world wide, as it solidifies its links to FINA. Nadine Day is at the forefront of that link, as the newly elected FINA Chairperson for Masters Swimming. She discusses this and more on today's Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast

Marathon Swimmer Sam Poulsen embodies determination and true grit as she conquers open water swim adventures. She has successfully crossed the English and North Channels in the UK and has plans for some exciting un-chartered swims in the near future. Sam shares all her tips and what she has learnt on today's Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast episode.
What kind of training does she do to prepare for these epic adventures; Which type of mindset does she use before and during the swim; and how does she combat the cold water extremes, tides and jellyfish she encounters on these swims.
Learn from Sam's experience and take that away to your own training and preparation for your next open water swim adventure.
In this episode of Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast we chat to vibrant triple Olympic swimmer - Englishman James Hickman
Jamesrepresented the UK at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympics; won the World Short Course 200m butterfly title 5 times and held the 100m and 200m Short Course World Record during that period. He has some great tales to tell from that time. With all these wonderful swimming accolades behind him, he settled down to a career in marketing and trotted around the globe for Speedo, finally landing in Sydney 6 years ago with his young family.
In this harbour side city, he re-ignited his love of swimming by finding his "people" at a local Sydney pool and discovered a new passion in open water swimming as well. Now he finds himself a FINA Masters Swimming WR holder with his mates in a 4x50m relay and regularly racing in the pool and ocean when he can fit it all into his schedule.
We chatted about his current training schedule - What he does, how often and what type of training he undertakes. James explained what he has learnt and is still learning in the open water. We talk about the way he used to train - "You have to make training harder than the race" and how this mantra fires him up now to challenge himself in the water.
The biggest takeaway from our chat was his passion and connection to the water and that is something all lovers of swimming will recognise.
US Paralympic medallist Jamal Hill is an extraordinary swimmer with an amazing swimming journey, which he shared with us on this episode of Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast
From discovering he had Charcot-Marie Tooth neuropathy at age 10, to finding masters swimming and then winning bronze in the 50m Freestyle at last years Paralympics, Jamal is a force of nature in all he does.
And his passion and success in his own professional swimming career, has led him to philanthropic work as the founder of Swim Up Hill where the core aim is to teach 1 million marginalised people to swim.
I loved hearing about his philosophy as to what makes a champion and the purpose he feels from that idea (26:50min)
